BISHOP PARKER: THE NATIVES' FRIEND.

The marris0'6 of Bishop Wil· fred Parker e of Pretoria to Miss Charlotte Albu , eldest daughter of Sir George Albu, on Tuesday at St Mary's Cathedral Jobannelburg. was an eve~t of interest to the Natives of South Africa, in that it united in terms of picturesque and impressive ceremonial, two firm and influential friends of the African. As priest in oharge of St Cyprians Native . M~lIion, ODe of the largest missionary undertakings in the Diocese of Johannesburg; as Arohdeacon of Pretoria and Director of Native Mission in that Diocese, he has become known as a loyal aod feMIese champion of. the rights of the African. In June last incidentally he announced his readiness to surrender £150 a year of his stipend, the amount to devoted to the mainten&Dce of the e:risting work among Natives during the depre88ion due to drought conditions.

In similar fashion, Miss Charlotte Albu has worked for the betterment of the lot of the Native. Her work among African girls in Sophiatown and elsewhere offers eloquent testimony to her sympathy with the people, and renders her an ideal companion and helper of her husband, the Bishop of Pretona.

The Bishop certainly deserves our loyalty and re~pect. He is no newcomer to South Africa. Born in Loudon, he came to South Africa as far back as 1898 and was educated at St Andrews CoUege, Grahamstown. He then went oversea to Christ Church, Oxford, where be took his M.A. degree in ] 908. Prior to that, be attended Cuddesdon Theological College. He became resident Chaplain to the Bishop of Stepney after leaving Oxford, and from 1908 to 1909 was Chaplain of St Frideswade. Poplar. Appointed domestic chaplain to the Archbishop of York, he held that office for three years up to 1912. During the war perIOd, be was curate of St Martins-inthe li'ields, the famous Church of Trafalgar Square. Then the ,:JFarclaiming his closer attention

he sorved as Cbaplain to tho Forces in France and Italy. He won tbe Italian decoration, tbe Croce di Guerra.

But tbe call of Africa was ever-present to bim,. and tbo necessities of the Native, were part of that call. For he came back to Africa in L9 19, a nd four years later took over t.he work which appealed ~o hi?! most, namely that of prJest . ID

oharge of St .Cyprians Native Mission. It IS unneeesary to add other biograph!cal ~etailshis work for Native IDteresta speaks (or itself. And the prcscuce of considerable n.um. bers of Natives at his marrtage on Tuesday both as participants iu the ceremonial service and as lookers-on, testified to the sincerity of our attitude towards him and bis attitude towards us.

The records of the clerics in South Africa are brigh test where they touch Native interests. For they have fought strenuously and successfully for Native rights. In the Cape, Dr. Phillip was a zealous prota gonist one hundred years ago. He has had his supporters and traducers. In Natal Bishop Colenso, and later his two dau~hters, battled for the Native, often in the face of critio ism and obloquy. Of recent years, the Misses Colenso, both of whom have passed away, devoted their Jives to the cause of tho Native_ The cradle of the effort of the Colen80 family was the l\laritzburg Cathedral. In the Tra.nsva.&i, Bishop Bousfield, and later, Bishops Furse. Talbot, and Karney. have never ceaaed to insist on the merits of the Native cause: and often in the face of strenuous opposition from an unsympathetic Government. In that excellent book, .. A TraosvaalJubilee," written by the Rev. J. A. I. Hamilton, we lea.rn that one of the first mission&ries in the Transvaal was the Rev. J. P. Richardson, whom Bishop Wilkinson found farming near Rustenburg. The author states: .. He had collected a. group of about forty Natives and used the Prayer Book service. After his ordination he continued to give wh&t time he could spare from his school and European congregation at Rustenburg, and a.fter his transfer to Zeerust his catechist, a Hottentot, wa.s tbe first coloured person to be confirmed by Bishop Bousfield."

It was, however. the Rev. Edwin Farmer, a priest, who had had considerable experience in Zululand as Canon Evangelist of St Alban's Cathedral, who first organised the missionary work of the Pretoria Diocese. He used to cycle over great distances travelling light: and one wet season he went far into the Zoutspansberg carrying his bicycle over impassable tracks. It is recorded that in Sekukuniland this Indomitable missionary mended twentythree punctures, a record surpassed in after years by Bishop

I<'uller, who gavc up after t wunty-cight mendiDgs becau8e t.he repair outfit had become {\X hau8ted ! " .

Euthusil.l.8m, her?iam, faith, .a ll shioc in tbe lives of the

missionary Bishops. Tbo~e of the past bold up a mirror to those of tbe present; T~e prcsent Bishop of Pretor.la ~dJ certainly notla.ck det.erm lD~tlOn to add to t he splendid achievemeuts, of his predec~s80r8. In his tnsk of friendship, betterment uplift, he will have the llssistance, in his wife, of one who has made his work her own.

We wish them well !
