Fitness enthusiasts and those deal-ing with obesity try out every pos-sible weight loss method under

the Sun to get the desired results. Butwhat if one’s sleep can do the trick justas good? Now, a new study on how get-ting sufficient sleep affects caloric in-take in a real-world setting attempted tochange how we think about weight loss.

The study was published in ’JAMAInternal Medicine’.

Understanding the underlying caus-es of obesity and how to prevent it is thebest way to fight the obesity epidemic, according to Esra Tasali, MD, Directorof the UChicago Sleep Center at theUniversity of Chicago Medicine. "Thecurrent obesity epidemic, according toexperts, is mostly explained by an in-crease in caloric intake, rather than lackof exercise," she said. In a randomizedclinical trial with 80 adults, Tasali andher colleagues at UChicago and the

University of Wisconsin-Madisonfound that young, overweight adultswho habitually slept fewer than 6.5hours a night were able to increase theirsleep duration by an average of 1.2hours per night after a personalizedsleep hygiene counselling session. Thesleep intervention was intended to ex-

tend time in bed duration to 8.5 hours -- and the increased sleep duration com-pared to controls also reduced partici-pants’ overall caloric intake by an aver-age of 270 kcal (calories) per day."Over the years, we and others haveshown that sleep restriction has an ef-fect on appetite regulation that leads to

increased food intake, and thus puts youat risk for weight gain over time," saidTasali. "More recently, the question thateveryone was asking was, ’Well, if thisis what happens with sleep loss, can weextend sleep and reverse some of theseadverse outcomes?"

The new study not only examinesthe effects of sleep extension on caloricintake but, importantly, does so in areal-world setting, with no manipula-tion or control over participants’ dietaryhabits. Participants slept in their ownbeds, tracked their sleep with wearabledevices, and otherwise followed theirnormal lifestyle without any instruc-tions on diet or exercise.

"Most other studies on this topic inlabs are short-lived, for a couple ofdays, and food intake is measured byhow much participants consume froman offered diet," said Tasali. "In ourstudy, we only manipulated sleep, and

had the participants eat whatever theywanted, with no food logging or any-thing else to track their nutrition bythemselves." Instead, to objectivelytrack participants’ caloric intake, inves-tigators relied on the "doubly labeledwater" method and change in energystores. This urine-based test involves aperson drinking water in which both thehydrogen and oxygen atoms have beenreplaced with less common, but natu-rally occurring, stable isotopes that areeasy to trace. The use of this techniquein humans was pioneered by the study’ssenior author Dale A. Schoeller, PhD,Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Sci-ences at UW-Madison. "This is consid-ered the gold standard for objectivelymeasuring daily energy expenditure ina non-laboratory, real-world setting andit has changed the way human obesity isstudied," said Schoeller. Overall, indi-viduals who increased their sleep dura-

tion were able to reduce their caloric in-take by an average of 270 kcal per day- which would translate to roughly 12kg, or 26 lbs., of weight loss over threeyears if the effects were maintainedover a long term. Perhaps the most sur-prising aspect of the study was the in-tervention’s simplicity.

"We saw that after just a singlesleep counseling session, participantscould change their bedtime habitsenough to lead to an increase in sleepduration," said Tasali. "We simplycoached each individual on good sleephygiene, and discussed their own per-sonal sleep environments, providingtailored advice on changes they couldmake to improve their sleep duration.Importantly, to blind participants tosleep intervention, recruitment materi-als did not mention sleep intervention, allowing us to capture true habitualsleep patterns at baseline."

EDITORIALToo tall

Has the shadow of a colossal ruler fallen uponthe republic? Narendra Modis government isunlikely to answer this question. It seldom an-

swers queries. But voices in the Opposition seem tobe apprehensive about New India being eclipsed by itstallest icon. The Congress leader, Rahul Gandhi, hasalleged repeatedly that the orchestrated charisma ofthe prime minister has ended up alienating Indias cur-rent leadership from the problems faced by the com-mon man. Concern about this perceived chasm wasrecently voiced by another parliamentarian. Respond-ing to the presidents address that mentioned B.R.Ambedkars vision of an India that honoured the prin-ciple of equality, Manoj Jha, a Rajya Sabha member, reminded the august House that Ambedkar had alsoforewarned India about the perils of the personalitycult. Mr Jhas warning is pertinent, given Indias longenchantment with towering political leaders. Nearlyevery era of Indian politics has centred around a prin-cipal leader. So much so that the fragility of coalitionsthat have ruled India in brief interludes they reliedon the collective rather than the individual was tak-en as a sign of the paucity of charismatic leaders. Itcan be argued that Mr Modis ascendancy and sus-tained public appeal embody the resurrection of In-dias unfailing deification of heroes.

Icons, unfortunately, can be injurious to the healthof a democracy. The burden of colossal figures weak-ens checks and balances instituted within a democrat-ic polity, enervating its institutions. Policy, conse-quently, runs the risk of getting centralized. Be it de-monetization or the controversial farm laws theywere, albeit, repealed later India has had its shareof such policy-making in recent times. Yet, what isworrying is that a number of functioning democracies India, Brazil, Hungary, the Philippines and so on have elected such leviathans, leading to the rise ofan authoritarian form of democracy. There is an ex-planation for this. One of the persistent failures of theliberal political project around the world has been itsinability to make countries more egalitarian. This hasmade it relatively easier for messiahs to emerge bypledging equality. One possible deterrent against thisvariant could be the strengthening of the ideal of dis-sent. Debates and dissent they are integral to thedemocratic ethos can go a long way in deflating theinflated chests of leaders. But for this to happen, theargumentative Indian and the argumentative mediamust rediscover their voice.

Casteism in UP pollsThe BJP has developed its poll narra-

tives around Hindutva and develop-ment in the battle for Uttar Pradesh

and the Samajwadi Party on welfareschemes based on socialism, but the core oftheir poll strategies appears to be castearithmetic and communal faultlines.

Be it the BJP, the SP or the BSP, a lookat their list of candidates makes it clear thatcaste calculation and religious affiliation arethe prime considerations in the selection ofthe nominees for the 2022 Uttar Pradeshelections.

The Congress under its general secre-tary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is banking onthe women voters to capture the power inthe Hindi heartland.

Sticking to its promise of reserving 40percent tickets to women, the grand old par-ty is experimenting with greenhorns, like anaganwadi worker, the mother of the Unnaorape victim besides glamorous faces likeBikni girl’ Archana Gautam from Hasinapurin Meerut district, and actor-activist SadarJafar.

"No matter how much you talk aboutvikas (development), the victory in pollshinges on which caste and community issupporting you," Pitardeen Shukla, an eld-erly homemaker in Amethi said.

Brajesh Shukla, a poll analyst said inLucknow, "Nobody can deny ’jati-dharma’in rajneeti in UP but there is something elsealso which is guiding voters’ choice of aparty in the polls.

He said a Muslim e-autorickshaw driv-er in Hathras told him that the governmenthad provided him monetary assistance toget an artificial limb without asking for hisreligion and asserted that why he should notsupport it.

With year-long protests against thethree agriculture laws having their echo inwestern Uttar Pradesh, farmers’ issues arebeing prominently used by the SP-RLDcombine against the BJP in the regionwhere 58 seats will go to vote in 11 districtsin the first phase on February 10.

BJP leaders, besides making efforts toprove themselves being pro-farmer, are rak-ing up the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots to al-

legedly create a wedge between the newfriendship of Jats and Muslims, the coresupport groups of RLD chief Jayant Chaud-hary and SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, respec-tively. The Samajwadi Party (SP) and theRashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) are fighting theassembly polls in alliance.

BJP leaders have, during their cam-paigning, heaped praises on Raja MahendraPrartap, a Jat icon who played a prominentrole in the freedom struggle, to reach out tothe electorally important community espe-cially in the western UP.

Beneath the election cacophony isgreater thrust to casteism and communal-ism, the time-tested poll weapons in the po-litically important Uttar Pradesh.

The Samajwadi Party has crafted a rain-bow of alliance with caste-based regional

parties to capitalise on the electorally dom-inant Other Backward Class (OBC).

Flight of influential leaders like O P Ra-jbhar, Swami Prasad Maurya and DaraSingh Chauhan from the BJP to the SP-ledcoalition indicated consolidation of theOBC support in favour of opposition group-ing. The BJP is going in the 2022 polls onlywith two allies -- Apna Dal of Union minis-ter Anupriya Patel and NISHAD party ofRajya Sabha MP Sanjay Nishad, both OBCparties. BSP chief Mayawati is seeking torevive its 2007 social engineering of "Dal-its-Brahmins" combine. Along withcasteism, Hindutva remains a battle cry, particularly for the BJP. Though the BJPleaders have been reaffirming "Sabka SaathSabka Vikas...", like in the past no Muslimfigured in the saffron party’s candidates list

for the polls. Chief Minister YogiAdityanath stirred the political pot throughhis "80 percent versus 20 percent" assertion, which was seen in the political circles as areference to the 80:20 ratio of the Hindu-Muslim population in the state. The saffronparty’s Hindutva plank is not woven aroundthe Ayodhya issue this time, rather in at-tacking Akhilesh Yadav’s statement infavour of Muhammad Ali Jinnah and call-ing Pakistan only a "political enemy" of In-dia and China the real enemy . Almost alltop BJP leaders have been attacking the SPchief for his "Jinnah and Pakistan" com-ments. Along with lord Rama who has dom-inated UP electoral contour for over threedecades in the name of the Ram Janama-boomi issue, lord Sri Krishna has made anentry in the current election.

irakpur. Amidst Corona guidelines, in wake of upcoming Punjab assembly elections, candidates are leaving no stone unturned for connecting people. Social media remains a big medium to connect with the Zvoters wherein Shiromani Akali Dal - BSP joint candidate and sitting MLA NK Sharma had topped the

chart from Derabassi constituency to make the best use of this form of communication. A team of IT professionals has taken the lead to update the campaigning trails of Sharma’s followers on a daily basis. Sharma who made social media more vital during global pandemic has raised the issues of people by being live on Facebook, bringing a sigh of relief during the lockdown.

During a series of curfews and lockdowns, while some politicians were emphasizing on the issues of mining and selling illicit liquor, NK Sharma converted his farm house into a Covid Care Center and treated hundreds of ailing patients. Sharma also delivered ration and medicines to the homes of the needy. According to Amrish Tyagi, in-charge of NK Sharma's social media team, his team is focused on three social media tools. There are three categories of Facebook posts which include ‘content’,

‘content of engagement’ and ‘content of reach’. The basis of content of engagement is comments and likes and on an average each post of NK Sharma has more than one thousand likes. The content of reach is measured by the share of the post by the fb users. Due to the wide following of standing MLA, an average of 500 to 600 shares can be seen which eventually helps to reach more than 2.5 lakh fb users. Facebook is not only a hit among th youth but has gained its popularity in rural belts of the constituency. Tyagi suggests, whatsapp is the easiest and most effective medium for one to one marking. NK Sharma's election campaign is being organized by forming a whatsapp group from village to block level, whose reach is reaching 25 to 30 thousand people daily.

Re-Writing history: India becoming hub of Startups, UnicornTake good care of your heart in winter: Expert

handigarh, February 8: “The risk of heart attack, heart failure, stroke and sudden death increases during winter months. This occurs due to several factors that occur due to Ccold temperature.” Dr Vivek Singla, interventional cardiologist at Amar Hospital, Patiala

stated that during winters our bodies need to make certain physiological adjustments to maintain our core body temperatures. It is associated with increased sympathetic outflow. These normal adjustments can present challenges to the diseased heart. Cold weather makes your heart work harder to maintain body temperature. Blood vessels constrict to concentrate pumping of blood to brain and other vital organs, he asserted. Talking about the effects of winters on heart Dr Singla said that heart rate increases during winter. The blood pressure also tends to increase. The arrhythmias increase due to increase in stress hormones , vessels constricts and there are increased chances of blood clot in brain, heart and legs due to increase in fibrinogen, cholesterol and other clotting factors. Giving tips on how to prevent cardiac events, Dr Singla said that one should keep warm by wearing layers of clothes, covering head, ears, hands & feet. Limit exposure to extreme cold, cold winds. Do not exert too much in the cold and avoid overheating as excessive physical exertion in warm clothing can cause vasodilation causing sudden decrease in blood pressure which is dangerous for heart patients.

alandhar, A two day long training workshop on Energy Conservation being organized by Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) concludes at Jalandhar on Tuesday. The workshops were organized at Meharchand ITI and at Zonal Knowledge Centre, PSPCL. Workshop was conducted to Jcreate awareness among stakeholders in the agriculture sector under the Agriculture Demand Side Management (AgDSM) Program in Punjab.

Nearly 140 PSPCL Officers, State Electricity Regulatory Officers, Officials of State Agriculture Department, pumpset manufacturers and distributors, officials from department of water supply and sanitation and local manufacturers, consultants, contractors, dealers and other service providers attended the workshop. Presentations and lectures were delivered on topics like Star Labeling of Electrical Appliances and Water Pumps, Operation & Maintenance of Water Pumps; Energy-Efficient Lighting and Air-Conditioning, smart metering, etc. Some case studies of live projects were also shown. The speakers were of the opinion that the agriculture sector accounts for approximately 80 percent of India’s total water consumption and pumps are the most vital element of the irrigation purposes. Along with expanding the area of irrigation, pumps also help to regulate the water flow. As a result, farmers have become more dependent on pumps for their irrigation needs. Awareness on energy efficiency measures/practices among farmers / technicians / stakeholders is one of the major keys to induce energy efficiency in the agriculture pumping sector. Therefore, it is essential to build the capacities of stakeholders like officials of DISCOMs, state agriculture department and farmers for energy efficient practices related to pump sets operation & maintenance, electricity supply improvement etc.

Detect mouth cancer early with these self-check tipsisar : Mouth cancers or Oral Cancers are one of the most common cancers that we see in our clinics every day. It can affect one or more parts of the mouth, such as lips, gums, tongue, cheeks, floor of mouth or roof Hof the mouth. As they grow, they may also involve either jaws or the skin of the face or can spread to lymph

nodes in the neck or elsewhere in the body. Most oral cancers are Squamous Cell Carcinoma, which is a cancer that arises from the lining on the inside of the mouth. Abuse of tobacco (in any form i.e., smoked such as cigarette or bidi; and smokeless such as gutka or khaini), areca nut (betel quid) or alcohol puts people at risk of developing such cancers. They are risk factors by themselves, but people who consume all of them, are at an even greater risk of developing cancer. Quitting or abstaining from such habits, may in fact be the best safeguard from mouth cancers. A non-healing ulcer or sore, which may or may not be painful or which can appear white or red, is the most common symptom of oral cancer. A new lump in the neck that does not go away after several weeks can also be a sign of mouth cancer. A recent or unexplained loosening of a tooth, which does not heal even after extraction, may also be worrisome. An oral self-check done once a month, by everyone over the age of 16 years after the teeth have been cleaned might be lifesaving, by detecting mouth cancer early. One just needs a mirror and a good light source and can either check him or herself with clean fingers or ask for a friend’s help and takes less than 2 minutes.
