After a meeting with Union home minister AmitShah on Tuesday following a sudden and late in-vitation, and considering the government’s pro-

posals advanced through a 20- page note, the protestingfarmers have announced intensification of their agita-tion. The protest is already a fortnight old. The new ele-ment in it is that it threatens to engulf the entire country, not just the borders of the national capital with Haryanaleading on to Punjab, which has emerged as the epicen-tre of the dissatisfactions. This is suggested in the programme announced by a co-ordination committee of the dozens of farmers’ bodiesfrom across the country. This plan visualises demonstra-tions at district headquarters across India, taking overtoll plazas nationwide, in measured steps blocking entryby road to the national capital, and protesting at the doorof all BJP MLAs, MPs, and ministers. From being seen as a movement of Punjab farmers to be-gin with, it is the allIndia profile of the movement thathas now emerged. This is a clear rebuff of the home min-ister who had invited only 13 of the many more farmerorganisations for talks last Tuesday, excluding in fact thelargest farmers’ union of Punjab, giving rise to specula-tion that, at one level, the effort was to sow seeds of dis-cord among protesters.Five representatives of Opposition parties led by Con-gress leader Rahul Gandhi, and including NCP chiefSharad Pawar, and leaders of CPI( M), CPI and theDMK, called on President Ram Nath Kovind to submita memorandum in support of the farmers’ demands, andlater addressed the media to publicise their endorsement. While the farmers have not called for the support of po-litical parties, the backing given to them by these entitiescan only impart operational resilience and muscle to anyfuture deepening of a planned nationwide protest. More-over, in the forum of Parliament, it is parties that repre-sent various sections of the people, not associations andunions of occupation or trade groups. It is open to thegovernment to appreciate that the linking of politicalparties brings on a new dimension, making it prudent tooffer serious political conciliation. If not, the country isstaring at serious economic dislocations and an atmos-phere of confrontation and mistrust in the body politic.

Literature & HealthNew treatment in development

for irritable bowel syndromeAs rapid-release, cramp-inducing

doses of chenodeoxycholic acid(CDC) have previously shown

promise in treating constipation, but fur-ther development has been hampered bythe abdominal pain associated with thesudden release of CDC--in preclinicalstudies. A team of researchers devised aplan to deliver CDC in a bilayered cap-sule, finding that this mode of deliverycould decrease colon cramping and thusproduce a better patient experience.

In preclinical studies, researchers atBrigham and Women's Hospital and theMassachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT)the team found evidence that thisbilayered delivery system has the poten-tial to reduce cramping and provide con-stipation relief. Findings are published inClinical and Translational Gastroenterol-ogy.

"We know bile acids are capable ofhelping with motility, but what has beenattempted in the past is giving a bolus -- aboatload of bile acid all at once. Thismanifests in increased bowel movements, but also pain," said Giovanni Traverso,MD, PhD, of the Brigham's Division ofGastroenterology, Hepatology and En-doscopy and the Department of Mechan-ical Engineering at MIT. "Could we takethis endogenous, natural product and de-liver it in a way that overcomes this riskof contractions?" The liver produces bileacids to aid in the digestive process, reg-ulating intestinal motility, fluid home-ostasis, and humoral activity. Bile acids, such as pro-motility CDC, have been pre-

viously studied in patients for their pro-motility effects and recognized to en-hance water ingression and bowel motili-ty. The challenge has been how to admin-ister these in ways that minimize potentialside effects; to accomplish this, re-searchers developed a bilayered deliverysystem.

The bilayered delivery mechanismwas tested in swine models for half-life,colon cramping and whether it caused asimilar dosage spike to single-layered de-livery. Immediate release of the pill's sur-face layer established a healthy local con-centration of CDC, which in turn offeredenough colonic fluid to initiate the pill'ssecond, slower-release layer of CDC.This biphasic release of CDC establisheda low-dose, long-lasting presence of bileacid over time, avoiding the dosage spikeand decreasing cramping.

Several important limitations exist forthis study, including lack of similar stud-ies for comparison and shortcomings ofthe swine model; the team was not able tomeasure levels of abdominal pain in theswine model, and only rectal contractionswere measured, as opposed to a fullcolonic evaluation.

Within the next 18 months, clinicaltrials will begin for the bilayered deliveryof CDC to IBS-C patients, with pill pro-duction regulated by the team's newlyfounded Bilayer Therapeutics. Traversoenvisions applications for this therapeuticfar beyond IBS-C. Bile acids are involvedin metabolic diseases, including diabetesand liver cytopathy.

After rescuing "theworld's loneliest ele-phant" from Pakistan,

American singer Cher isnow attempting to rehomeBua Noi, a gorilla who hasspent the last 30 years be-hind bars above a Bangkokshopping mall. According toanimal rights group PETAAsia, Bua Noi was capturedas a baby and taken to PataZoo, a small rooftop zoo, which has imprisoned ani-mals in "abysmal condi-tions" since the 1980s, whilenumerous of the establish-ment on TripAdvisor refer tothe zoo as an "animal hell,"reported Washington Post.

She is the only gorilla inThailand after her mate diedmany years ago. Pata Zoohas also been branded as'one of the saddest places inthe world' by the animal or-ganisation, which called forthe facility to be closeddown after an investigationthis year found the animalslanguishing in concrete cellswith no physical or mentalstimulation.

On December 5, Cherwrote to Thailand's environ-ment minister, Varawut Sil-pa-archa, and asked him tohelp her with her mission torelease the gorilla.

In the document, she ex-pressed deep concern overthe living conditions of the

gorilla and other animals be-ing kept in the zoo, and saidthat her animal charity or-ganisation - Free The Wild -has teamed up with AspinallFoundation, a British charityfor wildlife conservation, tosecure a sanctuary for theanimals at no expense to the

zoo's owner or the Thai gov-ernment. The singer said thatthe gorilla would be movedto a better and peaceful envi-ronment in Congo, where hecan socialise with other pri-mates, once granted permis-sion to relocate. UK mediareported that in response to

Cher's request, Silpa-archasaid that the zoo was devis-ing a plan to relocate the an-imals and that the living con-ditions of Bua Noi were notforgotten by Thai officials.

"I, myself as minister incharge of wildlife conserva-tion, have given instruction

to the relevant agencies inorder to find the best solu-tion for a better life of BuaNoi," he said. Cher also ac-cused the zoo owner KanitSermsirimongkol of profit-ing at the expense of animalstrapped in captivity, whilethe owner maintained that

relocating the gorilla wouldbe a "difficult task", as ani-mals are under threat fromdiseases like AIDS, Ebola,as well as civil wars andpoachers. Meanwhile, theorganisation Free Gorilla hasbeen spending years cam-paigning for the zoo to beclosed, saying that the lackof visitors due to the ongo-ing Covid-19 pandemic willmake the animals feel evenmore isolated, reportedWashington Post.

On its website, the groupsays its mission is for all 200animals at the Bangkok zooto be relocated.

Furthermore, a petitionlaunched by the foundationcalling on authorities not torenew the zoo's license gar-nered more than 125,000signatures. This happens af-ter Cher's efforts helpedKaavan, known as the'world's loneliest elephant'relocate to a new home inCambodia last month.

In May, the IslamabadHigh Court (IHC) ruled thatthe animals kept in Marg-hazar Zoo were kept in cruelconditions and the zooshould be closed. The un-happy elephant was also di-agnosed as emotionally andphysically unstable, whileveterinarians have said thatthe elephant was malnour-ished.

The antiepileptic drugezogabine reducedpathologic excitability

of cortical and spinal motorneuron cells that are earlysigns of clinical dysfunctionin people with amyotrophiclateral sclerosis (ALS), ac-cording to a study.

The study was conductedby the Neurological ClinicalResearch Institute of Massa-chusetts General Hospital(MGH).

In addition to providing aclearer understanding of mo-tor neuron excitability as animportant disease pathway forALS, the multi-site study, published in JAMA Neurolo-gy, involves the first clinicalinvestigation of ALS (alsoknown as Lou Gehrig's dis-ease) using a drug identifiedthrough an induced pluripo-tent stem cell (iPSC) model.

"The stem cell approachallowed us to capture the hy-perexcitability of motor neu-rons -- a prominent diseasephenotype -- and to then showezogabine was able to reduceit in people with ALS," saidlead author Brian Wainger,MD, PhD, of the Healey Cen-ter for ALS at MGH. "Ourfindings could have importantimplications for the field of

ALS research both by demon-strating the effect of ezo-gabine on excitability in peo-ple with the disease and byshowing that the metrics ofcortical and spinal motor neu-ron excitability may be usedas drug biomarkers in multi-site clinical trials," addedWainger.

ALS is a progressive neu-rodegenerative disorder thatleads to the death of neuronsin the brain and spinal cordthat control speech, swallow-ing and limb movements.Named after the famous base-ball player Lou Gehrig, whowas diagnosed with the dis-ease in 1939, there are around20,000 people in the U.S. withALS, and another 5,000 new-ly diagnosed cases each year.

Currently, there are three ap-proved drugs in the U.S. fortreating ALS, each with limit-ed benefit, creating an urgentneed for new therapies thatcould change the course of thefatal disease.

The MGH study of ezo-gabine was not designed to as-sess the long-term effects ofthe drug on the neurodegener-ative disorder, but rather tounravel the biologicalprocesses that go awry andidentify novel molecular tar-gets for drug intervention. Tothat end, the ten-week, phase2 study of 65 participants withALS at 12 U.S. sites investi-gated the feasibility of usingneuron excitability metrics aspredictors of disease progres-sion.

Is the concept of the burial ofdead exclusive to our speciesor was it something that our

closest ancient relatives, the Ne-anderthals practised? A newstudy indicates in favour of thelatter hypothesis, but some scien-tists still remain a sceptic.

For the first time in Europe,at the CNRS and the Museum na-tional d'histoire naturelle inFrance and the University of theBasque Country in Spain, a mul-ti-disciplinary team led by re-searchers have demonstrated us-ing a wide variety of criteria thata Neanderthal child was buried, probably around 41,000 yearsago, at the Ferrassie site in Dor-dogne. The study which was pub-lished in the journal ScientificReports has revealed that dozens

of Neanderthal skeletons havebeen found buried in Eurasia. This has lead scientists to believethat the Neanderthal's too like us

used to bury their dead. Howev-er, many other scientists are stillsceptical given the fact that themajority of these best-preserved

skeletons were found at the be-ginning of the 20th century andwere not excavated using modernarchaeological techniques.

A human skeleton wasanalysed from one of the most fa-mous Neanderthal sites inFrance: the La Ferrassie rockshelter in Dordogne by an inter-national team led by paleoan-thropologists Antoine Balzeau(CNRS and Museum nationald'histoire naturelle, France) andAsier Gomez-Olivencia (Univer-sity of the Basque Country,Spain).

After six Neandertal skele-tons were found during the be-ginning of the 20th century, thesite then delivered the seventhone between 1970 and 1973which belonged to a child of

around two years old. In thearchives of the Musee d'arche-ologie Nationale, the collectionsassociated with this specimen re-mained unexploited for almosthalf a century.

The excavation notebookswere recently reopened by a mul-tidisciplinary team who reviewedthe material and revealed 47 newhuman bones that were not iden-tified then had undoubtedly be-longed to the same skeleton. Athorough analysis of the bones, the study of proteins, state of pre-vention, dating, genetics, etc.was carried out by these scien-tists. In the hopes of finding fur-ther fragments of the skeleton, they returned to La Ferrassie.Even though no new bones werediscovered, they were still able to

reconstruct and interpret the spa-tial distribution of human re-mains and the rarely associatedanimal bones using the note-books of their predecessors.

According to the study pub-lished in the journal ScientificReports, while the other strati-graphic layers of the site inclinedto the north-east, the researchersshowed that the skeleton hadbeen buried in a sedimentary lay-er which inclined to the west (thehead, to the east, was higher thanthe pelvis).

The relatively unscatteredbones remained in their anatomi-cal position. Their preservationwas better than that of the bisonand other herbivores found in thesame stratum which in turn indi-cates towards a rapid burial after

death. Furthermore, the contentsof this layer proved to be evenolder than the surrounding sedi-ment there. Finally, a tiny boneidentified as Neanderthal by itsmitochondrial DNA and as a hu-man by the proteins was directlydated using carbon-14. Thismakes it one of the most recentdirectly dated Neanderthal re-mains, at around 41,000 yearsold.

Though this new informationdid prove that the body of thisNeanderthal child was intention-ally deposited in the pit dugaround 41,000 years ago in thesedimentary layer, still, furtherdiscoveries are needed to under-stand the geographical extensionand the chronology of Nean-derthal burial practices.

New evidence suggests that Neanderthals buried their dead

SHANTI GAUTHAMBADDI, DEC 11

The pits at the entranceleading to the housing boardphase 2 is a problem forpedestrians as well asvehicle drivers. Because ofthese pits, there is a situationof jam on this route, so thepeople living in the colonyand the walking pedestriansare facing huge problems. The city council officerspass through this routeeveryday, information hasalso been given by thepeople to the city councilofficials many times, but dueto lack of coordinationbetween the officials, thismain road is not functioningproperly.

It may be noted thatHousing Board is the onlyroute to go to manyindustries other than theHousing Board Phase-2, likeOmex Colony, Chakka

Malpur, Haripur Sandoli, onwhich vehicles are inmovement at all times, yetthe Municipal Councilofficials are not interested inworking with it.

Taking strict cognizanceabout this a few months ago,the chairman of the citycouncil Narendra Deepa, had given strict orders to theofficers, but still it was notdone by the officers. It isclear that the officers postedhere are spending their timesitting in the closed rooms.

When this matter wasbrought to the notice of theExecutive Officer, CityCouncil Randhir Verma, then he issued orders to hisAssistant Junior Engineer, but still the work was notdone till this day, whichclearly shows that there is nocoordination between theofficers sitting on the higherposts. The general public hasto bear the brunt of this, yet

these people have beensitting strong in this area formany years, while thegovernment has maintainedthat any officer cannot beposted for more than 2 or 3years at one place, but manyofficers have been sittinghere for many years.

It is clear that thetransfer policy formulatedby the government does notapply to them. Surprisingly, there has been a provision ofa budget of crores of rupeesevery year by thegovernment for thedevelopment work in thearea of the city council, butstill this lack of basicfacilities can be seen inevery ward of the CityCouncil Baddi.

The main reason is thatthe officers, who come hereonly do their owndevelopment and not of thecity. And these officials haveno fear of any kind.

Going into the dinner break, Australia's score read 6/0 as Marcus Harris (4) and Joe Burns played out a solitary over from Mohammad Shami. But the session was all about Bumrah using the long handle to great effect as he hit his maiden first-class fifty. Bumrah's unbeaten knock came of just 57 deliveries as he hit two sixes and six boundaries. Siraj on the other hand played a somewhat second fiddle as his 22 came off 34 balls with one six and two boundaries. For Australia, Sean Abbott (3/46) and Jack Wildermuth (3/13) were the stars with the ball.

Australia A all-rounder Cameron Green had to leave the ground after a straight drive from Bumrah's bat burst through his hand to hit the former on his head. It looked more of a precautionary step as he walked off without too much discomfort with the medical team.
