Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu told Putin that "shifts on duty at the command posts of the Strategic Missile Forces, the Northern and Pacific Fleets, and the Long-Range Aviation Command began to carry out combat duty with reinforced personnel," Interfax quoted the ministry as saying. Putin on Sunday ordered his military command to put Russia's deterrence forces - which include nuclear arms - on high alert, citing what he called aggres- sive statements by NATO leaders and Western economic sanctions against Moscow. The move drew condemnation in the West, with the United States de- scribing it as an escalation. A senior U.S. defense official said it was "putting in play forces that, if there's a miscalcula- tion, could make things much, much more dangerous." It came as Russian forces ran into tough Ukrainian resist- ance after invading Ukraine last week in what Putin has described as a special military operation to demilitarise the country. Putin has justified the invasion by saying "neo-Nazis" rule Ukraine and threaten Russia's security - a charge Kyiv and Western governments say is baseless propaganda. Putin announced he was putting Moscow’s nuclear forces on a “special regime of combat duty” in re- sponse to “aggressive statements” com- ing from Western powers. Zelenskyy says future 24 hours crucial for Ukraine KYIV : The next 24 hours will be crucial for Ukraine's fight with Russia, said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday during a phone conversa- tion with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the National News Agency of Ukraine (Ukrinform) reported. Johnson said he would do all he could to help ensure defensive aid from Britain and other allies reached Ukraine. Meanwhile, according to the regional government, the city Berdyansk in southern Ukraine had been seized by Russian troops Monday morning. The Ukrainian army said on Monday that the situation in Kyiv was still under its control. According to the latest development, a Ukrainian delegation arrived at the place for talks with the Russian side in the Gomel region in Belarus on Monday, Sputnik reported.

EDITORIALHungry land

Many people are going hungry. That is whatthe Hunger Watch Survey II, conducted inDecember 2021 and January 2022 by the

non-governmental organization, Right to Food Cam-paign, found when studying the effects of the secondwave of Covid-19 on the food insecurity of low-in-come families. Loss or reduction of income amongmarginalized households during the pandemic led, innumerous cases, to worry about getting food, apartfrom the lack of access to food that was desired or toenough food, including cereals. As to nutritional val-ue, 41 per cent of the respondents said it had deterio-rated, and 50 per cent said they had meat, eggs, milkand fruit less than two or three times a month. Al-though this undermines the governments claims ofexcellent food assistance, the survey report acknowl-edges that the situation is slightly better than the pre-vious year. Hunger Watch I, reporting on a survey inOctober-December 2020, had noted that 71 per centof the respondents had not had a wholesome meal inthe month before the study, while 90 per cent of eligi-ble beneficiaries in Hunger Watch II had receivedfood grain.

The problems of low and uncertain income, exac-erbated by the travails of the pandemic, are many lay-ered. A one-size-fits-all solution will not do if all In-dians are to eat well and regularly. Increasing theamount of free rations for those under the NationalFood Security Act is not enough, because the govern-ment has no way to ensure that the deserving alone aremade beneficiaries, or that they are not excluded be-cause of local politics. Ration cards now bring a dou-ble measure of wheat and rice under the Public Dis-tribution System, but there is nothing for those with-out ration cards. Casual labourers and migrant work-ers continue to fall through the many gaps, while mid-day meals for the young and nutritional support forpre-primary children have decreased. Many childrenhave left school to join work, because their familiesneed the income. Besides, online classes are an addedexpense. Food insecurity lies at the centre of a host ofevils lack of nutrition, ill health, reduction in liter-acy and education, simmering hunger, frustration andincreased violence, and a deeper divide between theprivileged and the less fortunate. These will haunt so-ciety for many years to come.

The First JasminesAh, these jasmines, these whitejasmines! I seem to remember thefirst day when Ifilled my handswith these jasmines, these white jas-mines. I have lovedthe sunlight, the skyand the green earth;I have heard the liquid murmur ofthe river thorough thedarkness of midnight;Autumn sunsets have come to meat the bend of a road in thelonely waste, like a bride raisingher veil to accept her lover.

China undermining women's basic rightsto bolster declining fertility rate

Amid a declining fertility rate, theChinese Communist Party (CCP) isadopting and implementing policies

that undermine women’s most basic rightslike bodily autonomy, a media report saidon Sunday.

The CCP has in recent times, adoptednew policies seeking to increase birth ratesin order to avert the impact of a rapidly age-ing population. The new policy offers a va-riety of benefits, including a considerabledecrease in unlawful pregnancy abortionsand a near elimination of unregistered chil-dren, while using a system of incentivesand penalties, The Hong Kong Post report-ed. However, CCP is finding it difficult toascertain ’how much liberty to providewomen for the sake of long-term stability,’the report said. A recent law titled ’China’slaw on the protection of women’s rights andinterests’ gives insights into the ideas of theCCP with respect to women.

The law treats women as entities otherthan men requiring "special considerationsand protections" according to China LawTranslate (CLT). CLT is a translation proj-ect run by Jeremy Daum, Yale Law TsaiCenter Fellow.

Another law called, ’Family EducationPromotion Law’ calls for women to playtheir "special role" in promoting the familyvalues of the Chinese people, to establishwhat CCP considers a "positive family sit-uation."

With Beijing’s obsession with numeri-cal objectives, it’s easy to see a 180-degreereversal of the anti-natalist techniques usedduring the decades of the one-child policy, with local Party officials now assessed ontheir performance in increasing, rather thandecreasing birth rates in their jurisdictions.

"A decade ago people were horrified byFeng Jianmei’s forced abortion. Now au-thorities say they will prevent (some) abor-tions. This reversal can appear stunning forthose unfamiliar with the control-at-all-costethos underpinning Beijing’s birth poli-cies," said Mei Fong, a journalist and au-

thor of One Child: The Story of China’sMost Radical Experiment.

The health-care alternatives accessibleto Chinese individuals have changed due tothe implementation of new policies. AWashington Post investigation in Decem-ber discovered that 12 hospitals in Shang-hai, Beijing, and Guangzhou were nolonger performing vasectomies, much tothe dismay of many young couples con-tacted.

"As soon as they want access to youruterus, they start sweet-talking you," one

netizen said last year in response to a statemedia hashtag that read #Eliminate Back-ward Concepts Like "Men Are Superior ToWomen" and "Beget Male Heirs To CarryOn The Ancestral Lineage".

The CCP faces an internal conflictwhere it seeks to address its demographicproblems which it feels is important forlong-term stability, while at the same timeit wants to maintain a facade of promotingwomen’s rights.

However, the facade falls quickly whenone looks at the abysmal representation of

women in the CCP, the harassment thatpeople like Peng Shuai and Xianzi facedfor speaking out against gender-basedabuse and regular censoring and shutdownof feminist social media accounts in China.

"With the one-child policy, Party offi-cials destroyed China’s society with a sin-gle ill-conceived demographic crash cam-paign. This is how they may duplicate thestunt a second time, in reverse. This willhave a long-term negative impact onwomen’s rights, gender relations, and Chi-na’s future," the report concluded.

Skilled Workforce, Real Shakti to provide GatiRemember the complete

lockdown from March toMay 2020. There were

only two things that kept life go-ing: a data-enabled internet con-nection and vegetables and gro-ceries delivered through doorcollection. The supply of essen-tials never went off. Behind thiswere thousands of unacknowl-edged logistics warriors whorisked their lives, picked andpacked at warehouses, transport-ed the goods to nearby stores, and door delivered. From thedriver of a truck to a picker in thewarehouse to a supply chainmanager in a company to theCEO of a logistics start up, thereis a whole gamut of supply chainprofessionals who keep everynation functioning and hum-ming.

Despite being such an essen-tial and indispensable sector, lo-gistics lacks organized skilling tothe desired extent. During ourMBA days, supply chain man-agement was not even a subjectoffered. It is now given as a sub-ject; however, it is still an elec-tive at the majority of MBAschools. The drivers are still be-ing trained through driver-helpermethodology. Warehousing iscompletely on-the-job learning. As per estimates, there are morethan 2 crore people employed inthe Indian logistics sector, mak-

ing it the second largest employ-er sector after agriculture. Unfor-tunately, only a very small per-centage of them are formallytrained. Most of the others haveacquired skills on the job.

Logistics skills have ac-quired attention, and progresshas been made in the last decadein logistics skill building. Thefollowing is the current logisticsskilling landscape in India: Lo-gistics Skill Council: The Logis-tics Sector Skill Council (LSC)was created as an industry apexbody by the Ministry of Skill De-velopment and Entrepreneurship(MSDE) and the National SkillDevelopment Corporation(NSDC) with the endeavour toprovide an end-to-end solution.LSC has identified 11 sub-sec-tors and is working towardstraining and employment gener-ation in all of these sectors. Prad-han Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yo-jana (PMKVY) Institutions: Un-der the PMKVY scheme, whichwas launched in 2015, varioustraining institutions offer Na-tional Occupational Standard(NOS) aligned training pro-grammes for different job rolesin the logistics sector. Socrates Apostle of Truthfulness but its victim alsoAvirtuous life journey imbibed

with truth, honesty, courage, firm determination, faithful-

ness, fearlessness and discipline isvery rare and difficult as its votariessuffered mercilessly and even losttheir right to live. Socrates has beenamongst such great persons whowas charged with impiety, corrupt-ing youth and was sentenced todeath only for his truthfulness andlikewiseJesus Christ who was cruci-fied because of claiming to be sonof GOD and his presence endanger-ing the institution of priests andsimilarly Galileo was sentenced tolife imprisonment and died underhouse arrest for claiming that Earthorbits the Sun whereas religious be-lief was otherway around. His beau-tiful logical reply in the court whenasked to apology has auniversalitywhen he said, "Truth should not bedecided by majority of votes, truthis always truth irrespective of the

number of persons accepting ordenying’. That is what happenedwith Socrates who was declaredguilty by majority votes 281 against220 in a court comprising of 501members.Surprisingly this notori-ous phenomenon of majority voteshas also eclipsed our democraticsystem where caste, money andmuscle power rules the roost andwise and right-thinking citizens ei-ther remain absent from voting orprefer NOTA.

Socrates, a Greek philosopherand founder of western philosophy, was born in 470 BC at Athens.Socrates had the misfortune of be-ing born incredibly ugly and thisfact is well reflected in the works ofPlato, Theaetetus, Xenophon andalso Aristophanes "Clouds’’. He wasfamous for his dialogues, discus-sions and marvellous thoughts andrare art of engaging other intellectu-als in question /answer dialects and

on well-meaning conclusions on thetopics of great importance in day-to-day life but a virtuous one. He him-self has not put anything in blackand white, it is only his geniuspupils, Plato and Xenophon who, having acute memory rememberedevery dialogue, put in writing, doinga great job for the coming genera-tions who have enlightened them-selves with wisdom rendered bySocrates., Plato has written four di-alogues namely Euthyphro, Apolo-gy, Crito and Phaedo depictingSocrates explaining ’What is piety’,hisself-defence against the charges, and sentence, Socrates refusal toCrito’s plea for safe escape from jailand finally his conversation withfamily and friends on death and im-morality during last few hours of hislife. Though in today’s world thevices like selfishness, dishonestycorruption, hate, enmity, jealousygreed have over shadowed the hu-

man mind-set still the truth ulti-mately wins that is why thename, fame and his teachingsstillhave universal impact on the worldhorizon even after the lapse of 2500years.

Besides being a marvellous in-tellectual he was also known for hispatience and toleration and this facthas been specifically mentioned bynoted intelletual and revolutionaryLala Hardayal MA in his world’s fa-mous book ’Hints for self-culture’whereinhe says that Gautam Buddhaand Socrates had been the greatestpersons, the former being a uniquesacrificer who renounced his king-dom, wife and son in search of Truthand the latter having extraordinarycharacteristic of patience and toler-ance. In this regard there has beenalso a very peculiar story as his wifeused to quarrel with him all the timeon trivial matters but Socrates usedto keep mum. Once she started

abusing Socrates but Socrates asusual remain silent. She was so irri-tated by his silence that she poureda bucket full of waste on his head.He smiled and said that the oldquote "thundering clouds seldomrain is proven wrong as today thun-dering clouds has also broughtshowers."

On this she felt very small.Socrates practised and preachedtruth throughout his life and exhib-ited a rare courage and diehard firm-ness during trial by rejecting offerto leave of Athens and plea for es-caping from jail proving true fa-mous Shakespeare quote, "cowardsdie many times before their death, but valiant tastes death but once".

As he drank the cup of hemlockhappily without showing any sign ofremorse or fear and that too earlierthan the fixed time confirming hissaying ’Death is the most precioushuman blessing’ and John

Doonequote that ’Death is nothingelse but a short sleep and liberatethe soul to eternal life’. His speechduring the trial had been a real testi-mony to his colossal stature and per-sona.A part of this speech is repro-duced here will be a glowing tributeto this saintly genius.

.if you say to me, you shall belet off, but upon one condition, thatyou are not to inquirein this wayanymore, and that if you are caughtdoing so again, you shall die,if thiswas the condition, on which you letme go I should replywhile I havelife and strength I shall never ceasefrom the practise and teaching ofphilosophy. The unexamined life isnot worth living, ..The hour of de-parture has arrived, and we go ourseparate ways, I to die, and you tolive.Which of these two is better, only God knows.

Microsoft is testing Quick Settings Bluetoothdevice list for Windows 11 Insiders

ashington : Microsoft is rolling out its test build of Windows 11 to its Insiders and the Wupdate promises to make Bluetooth devices

easier to access. As per The Verge, Windows 11 Build 22563 will surface a list of Bluetooth devices right into the Quick Settings menu of the taskbar, complete with visible battery levels for supported devices. This new Bluetooth list allows users to connect to new devices and disconnect to current devices without having to open the full Bluetooth settings menu. It takes a small cue from the way Windows 11's Quick Settings already handles Wi-Fi networks or selecting an audio source. This is the latest update to come to Windows 11 after just recently bringing new touch gestures and Start menu folders. Bluetooth has been a bit of a sticking point for Windows, often being a bit clunky in its interface -- especially if you switch between a bunch of Bluetooth devices. Microsoft started making big improvements to Bluetooth usability back in Windows 10, though it's taken time to do things like enable quicker, more effortless pairing and add AAC support. This next build of Windows 11 may seem like a small quality-of-life improvement, though it can go a long way toward making Bluetooth connections a smaller pain point for Windows machines.

Sidhu, his outlandish presence and performance will win laurels in the world of music. We all bid bon voyage to the artist Deep Sidhu, the voice behind the largest revolution of the century, a bloomed soul that had gripped and envisioned hundreds and thousands of people. Vision is the art of seeing what is invisible to others. Even with a single eye, Sher-e-Punjab Maharaja Ranjit Singh could envision the masses, and laid the foundation of Khalsa Raj. A Raj where all the communities would be treated equally, a Raj where there would not be any capital punishment, a Raj where men and women coherently move towards the prosperity of the nation, in short, a secular nation. Unfortunately, the whole foundation collapsed after his death and the British invaded our country. Now the question arises, What would happen if the partition had not taken place? What would be the power of that nation, the arms of which were torn apart by the partition? Saga Music’s colossal catalogue and contribution to the Punjabi Movie and Music Industry speaks volume for its commitment and devoutness. Saga Music and Sd.
