According to a press release from the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution on Sun- day, the conference is aimed at facili- tating cross-learning, disseminating best practices for schemes under Pub- lic Distribution System (PDS) and strengthening the focus on nutritional security. Union Minister Piyush Goyal will address the conference in presence of Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, Minister of State (CA, F&PD) and Shri Ashwini Kumar Choubey, Minister of State (CA, F&PD). The conference would also be graced by Ministers of Food and Civ- il Supplies of states and Union terri- tories. Best practices being followed in some of the states will also be shared for wide replication. The conference will serve as a platform to reflect upon the chal- lenges and opportunities in the true spirit of cooperative federalism for achieving the transformation of the food and nutrition security ecosystem in the country. India's targeted public distribu- tion system, under the National Food Security Act, 2013 (NFSA) is the largest public food-security program in the world. This system manages the food security requirements of around 80 crore beneficiaries across India, through the country-wide net- work of more than 5.33 lakh fair price shops. AGENCY AMRAVATI, JULY 3 A local court on Sunday sent the mastermind of Amravati- based shop owner Umesh Prahladrao Kolhe's murder, Shaikh Irfan Shaikh Rahim to police custody till July 7. The police on Saturday arrested the mastermind and seventh accused in the brutal killing of Amravati-based shop owner Umesh Kolhe. Earlier, six accused who were arrested have been iden- tified as Mudassir Ahmad (22), Shah Rukh Pathan (25), Abdul Thoufique (24), Shoaib Khan (22), Atib Rashid (22) and Yusufkan Bahadur Khan (44). Exactly a week before tailor Kanhaiya Lal Teli was hacked to death in Udaipur, Umesh Prahladrao Kolhe, a 54-year-old chemist, was killed in Maharashtra's Amra- vati district on June 21. Initial investigation by the City Kotwali Police Station in Amravati following a com- plaint by Umesh Kohle's son Sanket Kohle led them to ar- rest two persons - Muddsir Ahmad, 22, and Shahrukh Pathan, 25, on June 23. Inves- tigators so far believe that Kolhe was killed allegedly in retaliation for a social media post supporting BJP's Nupur Sharma who had made con- troversial comments on the Prophet in a television debate. The number of arrests may in- crease after the main accused in the brutal murder of an Am- ravati-based shop owner Umesh Kolhe is nabbed, said a police official on Sunday. "He (mastermind) was arrest- ed last night. He's being inter- rogated. They have a helpline group-Rehbar group. Several people connected to them. 7 accused have been arrested so far. The number of arrests may rise after the arrest of the main accused," said Nilima Araj, Police Inspector when asked about mastermind of Amravati murder. Union Home Minister Amit Shah di- rected the National Investiga- tion Agency (NIA) to take over the probe into the brutal killing of Maharashtra's Am- ravati-based shop owner Umesh Kolhe on June 21. National conference on food, nutrition security to be held on July 5 England bowled out for 284, Siraj claims four wickets SHASHI PAL JAIN CHANDIGARH, JULY 3 Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann will expand his cabinet on July 4 as five MLAs are expect- ed to be inducted as ministers, said party sources on Sunday. The swearing-in ceremony will take place at Punjab Raj Bhawan at 5 pm on Monday, said an official here. It will be the first cabinet expansion of the Bhagwant Mann-led government more than three months after the Aam Aadmi Party stormed to power in Punjab. With the induction of five more ministers, the strength of the Mann-led cabinet will reach 15, including the chief minister. Several names of MLAs, in- cluding Aman Arora -- two-time MLA from Sunam, Sarvjit Kaur Manuke two-time legislator from Jagraon, Baljinder Kaur two time MLA from Talwandi Sabo, Budh Ram - two-time MLA from Budhlada, Inderbir Singh Nijjar who is an MLA from Amritsar South and Anmol Gagan Mann, legislator from Kharar, are doing the rounds for the ministerial positions. However, there is no word from the party on the names of MLAs who will be inducted as ministers in the cabinet expan- sion. After the AAP formed the government following its re- sounding victory in the 2022 as- sembly polls, 10 MLAs were in- ducted as ministers in the Mann-led cabinet. There are 18 berths in the cabinet, including the chief minister. At present, there are nine ministers in the Mann-led cabi- net. In May, Health Minister Vi- jay Singla was sacked from the state cabinet over graft charges. The Aam Aadmi Party had stormed to power by bagging 92 seats in the 117-member Punjab Vidhan Sabha during the state assembly polls. This cabinet expansion is going to happen at a time when the Aam Aadmi Party has lost the Sangrur Lok Sabha by-elec- tion recently and civic elections are also to be held in Punjab in the coming times. In such a situation, it is be- lieved that in this cabinet expansion, efforts will also be made to harmonize ac- cordingly. If sources are to be believed, Dwaba and Majha areas can also be represented in this cabi- net expansion, because most of the ministers in the current cab- inet of the Bhagwant Mann gov- ernment are from Malwa area. According to sources, a total of 5 to 6 new ministers, including a woman MLA, are likely to take oath on Monday. At present, Dr Baljit Kaur is the only woman minister in the Bhagwant Mann government. Jeevanjot Kaur from Amritsar East and Sarvjit Kaur Manuke from Jagrao are among the names that are being discussed about the new female face. After winning the assembly elections, apart from CM Bhag- want Mann, a total of 10 minis- ters were made in Punjab. But among them, after the removal of Health Minister Vijay Singla in the corruption case, there are a total of 9 ministers. Environment can be savedby planting more trees

SHIV KUMAR SHARMAKARNAL: Plantation of trees was done on the divider of Sector 7-8 to-day in the second phase for environmental protection under the SaveTrees programme by Manav Care Sansthan. The plantation started at 6am by planting a neem plant. Every year a large number of trees areplanted by the organisation in vacant tree guards, temples, schools etc.The team of the organisation takes care of the trees after the plantation. The President of the organisation, Sanjay Gupta said that in the race forprogress, we have harmed nature by over-exploiting it. Roads, houses, factories etc. were built for which innumerable trees were cut. Due to allthis, we have put the very existence of trees which give life to the socie-ty in danger. The Manav Care Sansthan took this growing problem seri-ously and made a resolution for the safety of human beings that the or-ganisation would take care of them by planting trees and for this a'Palak' team was formed. The treasurer of the organisation, MukeshGarg said that we do have some responsibility for the trees that give lifegiving air and medicines by inhaling the poison spread in the atmos-phere, and that we clean air for the coming generations by indiscrimi-nate cutting of trees.

Yet another toppling game ike how a buyer on an e-commerce portal adds items to the cart before checking out, the BJP has just added LMaharashtra to its political cart in yet another display of

mastery in the toppling game. After multiple twists in the suspense-filled drama, the saffron party has decided to join the government headed by Shiv Sena rebel leader Eknath Shinde.

Though the earlier indication was that it would only extend outside support to the new government, the party’s central leadership finally opted for direct participation with Devender Fadnavis taking oath as the deputy Chief Minister. There is now a clear pattern emerging in the party’s game plan: fuel rebellion and engineer defections in the ruling party or the coalition in a State and then strike at an opportune time to grab power.

The list of States which have gone into the BJP’s kitty through this devious plan is long: Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Manipur, and Puducherry.

The Mumbai potboiler too carries the imprint of the toppling template mastered by the BJP over the years. There was a time when the Central government used to dissolve the Assemblies, particularly in opposition ruled States. Now, the trend is to manoeuvre the MLAs of the ruling party and try to install a government of their choice. The latest political drama, culminating in the resignation of Uddhav Thackeray as the chief minister and the collapse of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, was clearly scripted and directed by the BJP.

The fact that the rebel leader Shinde has been rooting for reviving the alliance with the BJP and ending what he called an ‘unnatural tie-up’ with the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party proves that the entire operation was remote-controlled by the saffron party. The itinerary of the rebel legislators and their stay in luxury hotels in Gujarat, Assam and Goa was meticulously planned by the BJP leadership. Following the revolt, Shiv Sena is now left with 13 MLAs as against its original tally of 56.

The toppling of the MVA government comes as a big blow to the coalition experiment and exposes the chinks in Shiv Sena. Shinde’s rebellion came close on the heels of the MVA’s drubbing at the hands of the BJP in the Rajya Sabha polls on June 10 and Maharashtra Legislative Council polls on June 20.

The MVA is a fragile coalition riddled with intra-party and inter-party conflicts and disputes which made it more vulnerable to the BJP’s game plan. In the days ahead, the rival factions of the Sena are likely to be locked in a bitter battle to claim the legacy of the party founder Bal Thackeray. From the time the Shiv Sena broke ranks with the BJP soon after the 2019 Assembly elections, its ally of three decades, the saffron party has been planning to take revenge.
