August wind causestree to fall on car

Witpoortjie — The De Jagers almost fi nished their Friday shopping trip when a tree fell and smashed their vehicle on 30 August.

Kobus and Moneen de Jager made their last stop at the Witpoortjie Pharmacy on Generaal Pienaar Street at around 11am. Kobus, who re-cently had surgery to his shoulder, stayed in the Tata Indica parked in front of the Witpoortjie Spar. He was busy speaking to street vendor Pe-ter Williams when they heard a snap and saw the tree falling on the right-hand side of the ve-hicle, smashing the windscreen.

De Jager says that the other damage he could see on the car includes dents in the roof and on the driver-side door. Luckily, he was sitting in the passenger seat.

“I saw the tree falling and I was worried about my car.

“I’m just so thankful that my wife wasn’t in the car at the time,” De Jager says, looking at the shattered glass in the vehicle.

The couple stays in Mindalore and was of-fered a lift home by the Help24 tow truck that arrived on scene minutes later.

JMPD offi cers Combrinck and Du Toit were in the vicinity and came over to offer assistance, saying that City Parks employees have been scraping teams together to deal with fallen trees in the Roodepoort area on Friday, but that they might come out to Generaal Pienaar Street later the afternoon.

Eli Kelly Makgamo’s vehicle, a red Fiat Uno, also was affected by the incident, having been scratched on the front passenger door and hood.

“I hurt my shoulder slightly when I jumped out of the car,” De Jager said.

The Tata was towed away by 12 noon.

Update: City Parks cutsdown Witpoortjie treeWitpoortjie — As speculated about earlier on Friday 30 August, City Parks workers indeed came to cut down a bothersome and rotten tree on Generaal Pienaar Street.

This follows a natural disaster earlier on Fri-day morning where a rotten tree fell on resi-dents’ vehicles that were parked in the parking lot of Witpoortjie Spar.

JMPD offi cers Combrinck and Du Toit, earlier on scene, said that City Parks were busy

all over Roodepoort cutting down hazardous trees and removing the ones that have fallen.

At around 1pm City Parks workers could be seen cutting down and removing the tree that damaged the vehicles.

It is uncertain whether other trees on the border of the parking lot and Generaal Pien-aar Street also will be removed, as residents and eyewitnesses believe their roots are rotten as well.

Metrobus takesresponsibility

Roodepoort — After the Record investigative team’s damning video exposé of the ills that hamper Metrobus’ service, the entity eventu-ally responded.

Although it took a while for them to com-ment, Metrobus can be complimented on a well thought out, positive reaction that did not include excuses but offered solutions.

As far as delays are concerned acting Man-aging Director, Lawrence Maqekoane, admit-ted that fl eet capacity faces serious challenges and is often the cause of these problems. He also explained that the age of many buses cause them to break down, which results in delays or non-availability. The good news is that the City had approved the purchase of 150 new dual-fuel, ‘green’ buses and in the meantime until these are delivered they will be looking into leasing buses.

With regard to complaints about irregulari-ties, the public is asked to call 011 375 5555 and choose option 6. Maqekoane emphasised

that when a complaint is lodged, the person must have the bus ticket that was used for that specifi c trip at hand since the ticket contains the information needed for the investigation.

The practice of not issuing tickets to pas-sengers or giving them old tickets is a very se-rious, immediate dismissal offence. Passengers must insist on receiving a ticket or else report it. Should an inspector fi nd a passenger with-out a ticket, both the driver and the passenger will be in trouble. Passengers are advised to purchase a tag or smart card to help to eradi-cate ticket fraud.

This also would eliminate the problem of not having the right change.

“It is unrealistic for passengers to want change for R100 – it wastes time and also con-tributes to buses running late,” Maqekoane rightly says.

Motorists who observe reckless driving by bus drivers need to provide either the registra-tion number or fl eet number of the bus with as much evidence as possible when reporting such incidents.

“I would like to emphasise at this point that all complaints are recorded and directed to the right depot where they will be investigat-ed,” Maqekoane assured the Record.

A new fl eet of buses soon will enhace the Metrobus service.

Good news for bus commutersRoodepoort — Unlike some of its siblings such as Pikitup, the Metrobus service seems to be willing to improve for the sake of service de-livery.

This comes in the wake of constant com-plaints from the public and a Record video exposé on the service entity that could not be ignored.

Metrobus has announced that they have is-sued a tender to purchase between 125 and 175 new buses.

“We are very excited to tell our passengers and the residents of Joburg that we will be able to replace more than a third of our ag-ing fl eet with modern, low-fl oor and dual-fuel ‘green’ buses,” says acting Managing Director of Metrobus, Lawrence Maqekoane.

“These buses will advance the City’s low car-bon economy agenda and fuel job creation,”

he adds.Tenders will be required to maximise local

content thereby creating local jobs. Furthermore the buses have been specifi ed

to run on biogas and diesel. This decision was made in the light of research that has identi-fi ed the enormous potential for the production of biogas from city waste sources such as land-fi ll sites.

Metrobus also will revamp its fare collection system by modernising it.

“We want to make sure that when the new buses arrive, they are reliable and part of the City’s offering of quality, affordable public transport,” says Maqekoane.

It also is envisaged that the new buses will operate at higher frequencies and operate for longer hours along a number of key public transport corridors.

William Nicol update: trucks banned

Florida Hills — As of 2 September JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minnaar proudly can say that truck drivers on William Nicol Road who break the law will be fi ned for their misconduct.

On Tuesday 27 August JMPD spokespersons Minnaar and Edna Mamonyane met with the Record to discuss the recently erected signage on William Nicol Road.

Past accidents, specifi cally the horrifi c pile-up of 14 June, inspired Minnaar to lobby for signage on the road in his personal capacity.

“I applied for it personally – to prevent ac-cidents, injuries and the deaths of innocent people.

“Because on that day, I saw how innocent people got injured and died [sic],” said Min-naar while pointing out one sign at the in-tersection of Ontdekkers and William Nicol Roads, turning right from the service road into William Nicol Road towards Life Flora Clinic. Another sign is visible from Ontdekkers Road turning left into William Nicol Road towards Life Flora Clinic.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) is still to take down a sign on William Nicol Road that indicates that trucks should shift to a lower gear, according to Mamonyane and Minnaar.

Minnaar and Mamonyane were happy to communicate that, as of 2 September this year, the driver of any heavy-load vehicle who ig-nores the new command road signage will be subject to a fi ne.

“The JMPD will issue a R500 fi ne to any person who disobeys these signs,” said Ma-monyane, explaining that JMPD offi cers would be monitoring the area regularly.

The spokespersons advised that the best al-ternative route for truck drivers to take would be to drive down Ontdekkers Road towards Johannesburg and turn left into Hendrik Pot-gieter Road.

Minnaar mentioned that similar signage was put up on Doreen Road in Wilro Park that be-comes Peter Road in Ruimsig.

Goeie moer.Kritiek Aster — La Responsabilisation (August 2013)

Olivetti 45 — I recently have been dubbed the “pet shop lady” by Meerkat, referring to all my dealings with local animal protection authori-ties, animal rights activists and supposedly con-cerned residents.

I’ve dealt with managers, inspectors, owners and responsible sellers of pet products, each of those mentioned more extreme or convinced that they are right. I’ve heard of a possible so-lution to shelter animals that are not adopted. Yet, Cataract could not give one decent com-ment, and the one time I told her that the call is being recorded, she dismissed the conversation and forwarded a half-hearted press release.

Is she really turning so much of a blind eye to the organisation’s defamation of their own name?

I’m talking about a bold press release stating that their services are only available to desper-ate, desolate Roodepoorters. Nevermind the well-meaning Florida Hills residents that earn a lot, sure, but that have big families and thus big expenses. The scapegoat of being an animal protection authority enables know-it-alls to judge whether or not you can afford a private veterinarian.

Don’t even get me started on the backlog of supposed charges that have been laid against the bad pet owners. Why do we never get a press release about how they were arrested or fi ned or seen to in whichever manner, Cataract?

Who has really ever dealt with the Animal Protection Act, or the Performing Animals Pro-tection Act for that matter? Do you know that it expects you to look after your pet and does not expect you to pay thousands to do so? I suppose those Acts are decaying in dust in the corner of her offi ce, for her perusal only when she needs

to take on a big bad pet shop. We’re all quick to jump on our high horses over a pet farm not op-erating as it should or a Davidsonville doggy in-fested with maggots, but what about the protec-tion of the average, responsible animal owner?

What about this average Astertjie?I earn drie rand ‘n maand (so the offi ce joke

goes). Not that I’m complaining. But every time Darce Vader (Darcy, my beloved Jack Russell) needs an injection or looks pap I need to deal with it and I need to do so without spending all of my rand.

And it can easily run that high, with x-rays and IVs and you-name-it, if pup is really sick.

I respect the little waentjie they send out to a Lindhaven corner on weekdays. That waentjie has ensured that my puppy is vaccinated, time and again. It’s not like you see careless owners there, no – people are holding their pets or have been walking their pets there, some are veteran waentjie visitors. These people care. Yet, the uninterested organisation wants to chase them away to make space in the queue for owners such as the Davidsonville doggies. News fl ash, love, those people will never queue. They did not even care to bring their pet to you, they had you fetch it. My uncle recently adopted Buksie from a colleague of mine. Healthy, cute cross-breed, certainly not considered a pavement spe-cial. He’s healthy because of that waentjie. He wants to play at 4am.

My suggestion is, if you really want to take the veterinary waentjie away from responsible Roodepoorters, replace it with one that fi nds and catches those that are not (if you still have funding, aren’t you running out of generous waentjie veterans?). Send me a press release of what happens to those bastards, would you?

The SPCA should prosecuteDebbie Beneke (email): This is a very very sad story (Davidsonville dog eaten alive, 6 August 2013). I’m glad that there is no more pain for this poor angel. Rest in peace, little one.

We hear about and see pictures of animal abuse and to the average Roodepoorter it is very disturbing.

I am disappointed that we never hear or see that charges are laid against these animal abusers. Yes, I know the SPCA is here to help, but what is the outcome, Cattanach?

I feel that steps taken against these negli-gent and cruel owners should be more se-vere. Also, let the people see what steps are taken against them – how are they being sen-tenced?

What is being done about animals that are stolen to train for dog fi ghting or to use as bait?

I am an animal lover and it pains me to read about all the abuse but no follow up, no justice.

The Housing List mythRoodepoort — The Gauteng Housing List seems to be akin to the Holy Grail, Philoso-pher’s Stone or Atlantis – it does not exist writes RIAAN VAN ZYL.

As the Record once again heard in an in-formal settlement on 27 August, one, if not the biggest, gripe shack dwellers have is how long they have been waiting for houses. The list seems to be a handy tool for government to keep informal settlement dwellers, such as those in Leratong Village, at bay.

The failure of Human Settlements MEC Ntombi Mekgwe to provide details on the Gauteng Housing Demand Database after the DA has requested this in the Provincial Legis-lator, reinforces the notion that it is nonexist-ent.

“When asked about the backlog in housing recently the MEC indicated that a ‘sizeable number of applicants’ have been waiting for more than fi ve years.

“This means that either the database is non-existent, or the MEC and her department has

no idea of what is going on,” says DA Gauteng Housing spokesperson Janet Semple.

The myth of the housing list and demand database is supported by a recent report by the Community Law Centre (CLC) at the Univer-sity of the Western Cape and the Socio-Eco-nomic Rights Institute of South Africa (SERI).

The report states that “the ‘housing waiting list’ does not exist or function in any way that it is understood to exist or function.

“I often am approached by citizens who ask me to assist with verifying their status on the database, and regularly – despite having a re-ceipt from the department – their names do not appear on the list.

“The DA’s repeated attempts to get detailed information on the database continue to hit a brick wall,” says Semple.

The DA now will submit a request in terms of the Promotion of Access to Information Act (Paia) to compel the MEC to provide the “mythical” database and detailed information on the backlog in housing in the province.

Daar was wit

Update: Renegades acted againstANC Constitution — Adams

Fleurhof — ANC’s Ward 70 branch is still to operate, says the alleged pariah Chairperson Aubrey Adams.

The Record met Adams at his Fleurhof home on 28 August to discuss the current crisis in the branch and the allegations against him.

Adams told the Record that the recent events were unfortunate and admitted that it was a setback for the branch in the run-up to the elections in what he refers to as a DA strong-hold (Ward 70).

“It has left a vacuum and unfortunately Na-ture does not allow vacuums. Vacuums always are fi lled by something else,” Adams explains.

In an interview of almost two hours Adams also alleged that the current situation is due to a few ‘renegades’ in the branch and that the problems started back in 2009. The branch has been sidelined by a factional group that alleg-edly are backed by the regional structure.

“Political ambitions have caused the turmoil and divisions. I do not even think that these individuals know that they are acting against the ANC’s constitution,” Adams says.

He explained that in the ANC the branch is the most important entity and that branches dictate to Zone, Regional, Provincial and National structures. According to Adams ap-pointments and more can not be made from the top down but has to be born from the branch. “We had a person (name known to the Record) who started having her own ambitions and actually got support from the Region, which is unconstitutional. She then mobilised a small group of supporters around her and she ended up being a representative in the Zone without the branch’s mandate. Most of the members do not support this group. Mem-bers are not happy with the way the Regional structure is meddling in the branch’s affairs,”

Adams laments.Bar for the renegade group, the rest of the

Branch Executive Committee (BEC) now will regroup to formulate a letter to the Regional structure to inform them that the branch will continue operating until it can be proved that they are dysfunctional.

Without hesitation Adams says that he as the Chairperson of the branch still has the support of the majority of the members.

Regarding the allegations about the mon-ey he says that the donation in question was used exclusively to the benefi t of the Donovan Macdonald Home for the Aged and that the contractor can attest to it. With regard to the one year for which the branch does not have any fi nancial records, Adams says that it was a treasurer’s doing. He believes that in many cas-es what seem like fi nancial irregularities stem from other members not doing their jobs prop-erly. Finally the topic of the fateful evening of 26 August is raised. Branch Secretary Vusi Thomas claims that Adams assaulted him.

“After the meeting with Regional deployed representatives everyone went outside. In the meeting Thomas accused me of stealing a small amount (R1 000) that he donated. I wanted to ask him about it and called the treasurer to tell him how the money was applied, although Thomas knew full well. Thomas got off his scooter and took off his helmet. Suddenly he took a swing at me and hit me in the face with the helmet. I collapsed and people had to in-tervene. I picked up the helmet and wanted to retaliate but decided against it. Instead I threw the helmet across the street into a veld,” says Adams who also claims to have witnesses in his defence. Adams told the Record that he also is going to lay a charge of assault but has tarried because the police told him fi rst to see a doctor to confi rm that he was injured. This Adams allegedly did and had X-rays taken.

The Record approached branch Media Liai-son Dan Mabalane for offi cial comment but he declined for the moment, citing having to talk to Adams and the branch fi rst as the reasons.

Four dagga arrests madeRoodepoort — Four arrests relating to pos-session of dagga were made over the weekend spanning from 23 to 25 August, according to Roodepoort SAPS spokesperson Vincent Mashiteng.

On 25 August police arrested a man (28) in Van Wyk Street in the Roodepoort CBD after he was found with 0,6g of dagga during stop- and-search operations.

A man (29), who was in possession of 3,5g of dagga, was arrested in Grobler Park on 23

August. Also on 25 August police arrested a man

when they stopped and searched a suspicious group and found 20g of dagga in one of the men’s pockets.

On 23 August another man (26) also was arrested in Orange Street, Princess after the police found 4,1g of dagga in a ziplock bag on him.

All the men appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court.

Jack in a shack'ssecond anniversaryLeratong — On 27 August the DA’s Gauteng Caucus Leader, Jack Bloom, spent the sec-ond anniversary of his Jack in a Shack visits in Leratong Village informal settlement writes RIAAN VAN ZYL.

This was Bloom’s 24th overnight stay in an informal settlement. The visits are not merely a publicity stunt but actually an opportunity for Bloom to fi nd out what residents’ service delivery problems are. Right at the outset at a public meeting he made it clear that it was nei-ther a political meeting nor campaigning but that all residents – regardless of political affi li-ation – were welcome to discuss their problems with him.

Bloom was shocked that in a settlement with approximately 8 000 people and 2 000 shacks there were only six communal taps for the whole community to use. Bloom and a plumber from the community later went and bought taps, for which Bloom paid out of his own pocket. A large crowd followed Bloom around while pointing out problems. The resi-dents’ biggest needs were identifi ed as housing, electricity and water, but other problems such as sewerage, sanitation and rubbish piling up also were pointed out to Bloom.

Bloom was planning to spend the evening eating and sleeping over at one of the families in the community.

Library spending hardly a page turnerRoodepoort — In the recently released First Quarterly Report on the fi nancial perfor-mance of the Gauteng Provincial Government it was revealed that less than one per cent of the money made available for library services in the province had been spent. This is unfor-tunate news considering the need to improve the education service, especially for the poorer people in the province writes RIAAN VAN ZYL.

The report showed that only R499 000 of the R63 million budgeted for in the Communi-ty Library Services grant had been spent. This is disappointing considering that the National Treasury has made this money available spe-cifi cally for this purpose.

“There is no excuse for such incompetence. Poor people fi nd it very diffi cult to afford books. They are desperate for decent librar-ies. But they are made to suffer because the government doesn’t care enough to make sure

staff do their jobs. If the DA were in charge then government employees would do the work they are supposed to and libraries would provide opportunities for people to improve their lives,” said Mike Moriarty, MPL and DA Gauteng Finance spokesperson.

The Deputy Director for Libraries and In-formation Services, Athilla Lourens, ques-tioned this report when the Record spoke to her. According to Lourens The City of Johan-nesburg received approximately R8 million for the fi nancial year that commenced on 1 July. The department receives the money in two payments, one of R3,8 million from the De-partment of Arts and Culture, and R4 million from the province. Lourens said that contrary to the information, of which she was not aware until the Record called her, the Department’s spending “is going very well”.

A project to build two new libraries in the City is also well under way.

NSPCA has Babalas problemsMaraisburg — A recent press release suggests that the National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) was very concerned about certain scenes in the fi lm Babalas writes MATHILDE MYBURGH.

The statement, as issued on 16 August, ad-dresses the portrayal of a primate drinking beer and smoking in the trailer shown prior to the fi lm’s release.

According to the NSPCA statement, the Council approached Peter Scott, Babalas pro-ducer, to discuss the concerns of “passionate people” that they have received.

Christine Kuch, on behalf of the NSPCA, stated that “response was received from his [Scott’s] attorneys.

“The response assured the NSPCA that the animal was not harmed and that the beer can actually contained fruit juice.”

According to Kuch’s understanding of the attorneys’ comment, the smoking sequence also was produced by using a PhotoShop tech-nique.

The NSPCA’s statement of 16 August sug-gests that the attorneys’ comment was not suffi cient, and they reverted to their concerns, which pertain to portrayal and perception.

“It is a great shame that, in a time where disrespect (if not outright cruelty) to animals is rife, the intention was to portray an animal drinking beer and smoking,” said Kuch.

The NSPCA has requested that the producer and his team respond to follow-up questions.

“May we please ask if the fi lming was moni-tored by a representative of a registered ani-mal welfare organisation?”

Another request for proof of a licence per-taining to the Performing Animals Protection Act was made.

“Both the above would be appreciated as the information will assist us to respond to any further communications on the matter from the public [sic].”

Kuch says that by 26 August neither Scott nor his lawyers have issued a response.

The DA's Jack Bloom listens attentively to a resident of Leratong Village informal settlement's problem.

'United we stand' — HBW patrollersHorison — Horison Blockwatch (HBW) patrol-lers and their families had a memorable get-to-gether for breakfast at Meet ‘n Eat at the Village @ Horizon on 24 August.

The restaurant regularly supports HBW and sponsored the breakfast.

HBW has over 80 patrollers of which the youngest is only 22 and the oldest an amazing 82.

These dedicated volunteers patrol the area 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All patrollers are equipped with two-way radios while on the road and are in constant communication with other patrollers and members in the area should they witness irregularities and assistance is re-quired.

The committee gave recognition to each pa-troller by issuing them with a HBW refl ective jacket and a certifi cate. Danie Bezuidenhout, Chairperson of HBW, especially thanked the wives and husbands of the patrollers for what they sacrifi ce for the community.

“Their visibility is making a difference in the

crime in the area. HBW is busy implementing systems to enable information and crime in-cidents to be communicated to members on a regular basis.

“Crime is on the increase in the area and August was a busy month with various inci-dents reported, but some arrests were made as well. We urge everyone to be vigilant and to be aware of what is going on in their surroundings. Should you see anything suspicious, contact the 24-hour manned emergency number,” asked Be-zuidenhout.

The emergency number is 072 326 8268. Should you wish to become a member please send an email to [email protected] or visit their facebook page at www.face-book.com/horisonblockwatch for updates on daily incidents and HBW news.

The blockwatch invites residents to join their General and Patrollers’ meeting on Thursday 12 September at the 7pm at Betésda Church Hall at the corner of Swart and Andries Bruyn Streets, Horison.

JMPD members confront drinking youngsters

Witpoortjie — Shortly after a natural disas-ter destroyed yet another vehicle on Generaal Pienaar Street on Friday 30 August, JMPD members were alerted about youngsters drink-ing in public. On the opposite side of where the accident took place the Witpoortjie Block Watch spotted four young men drinking in their blue Peugeot vehicle. “We just arrived on the scene of the tree incident when one of the youngsters challenged a young girl who was walking with me. “We saw that the JMPD were on scene and alerted them immediately of what we saw,” Witpoortjie block watcher Ruth van Tonder told the Record. Ami Neveling (17)

said that she was furious when they bothered her. “They were sitting and drinking in that vehicle in the middle of the day,” she said at around 11.40am. JMPD offi cers Combrinck and Du Toit walked over to the glass and hard-ware store in front of which they were parked. The offi cers demanded that they get out of the vehicle and that they dispose of the alco-hol they were consuming at the time. “One of those youngsters challenged the offi cer as well, saying that he would fi nish his alcohol because he paid for it and the offi cer won’t be able to stop him,” Van Tonder said. “I’m appalled at what young men in Witpoortjie seem to be do-ing with their time.” The JMPD offi cers were still busy with them when the Record left the scene.

As soon as a case is opened, the Record will follow up.

Nonchalant robbery at Witpoortjie SparWitpoortjie — Spar employees were dismayed at the loss of R800 worth of goods in a noncha-lant robbery on the afternoon of Wednesday 28 August writes MATHILDE MYBURGH.

The Witpoortjie Spar was robbed casually at 1.40pm by a group of women with large hand-bags.

Spar employee Norma Deysel told the Record that, as far as she could gather, four women and one man were in cahoots in the robbery.

“The women who all carried large handbags took Spar baskets and strolled around as a dis-traction while one of them stuffed her handbag with goods.

“The man was the getaway driver.”Employee Christa Coetzer suspected foul

play and cornered the one woman as she was walking out of the door, demanding to see her handbag.

“She must have known I suspected her, be-cause the handbag was empty by the time I searched it.

“The other three women and the man got in

the vehicle and drove off, leaving her there. For the full article visit www.roodepoortrecord.

Dealership relocatesRoodepoort — Clearwater BMW announced with excitement its relocation from Westgate to Little Falls on 1 September.

The West Rand continues to enjoy enormous growth and Clearwater BMW has timed its move perfectly to capitalise on the new develop-ment potential of the area. The new dealership is situated in a prime location, at a major inter-section at the corner of Hendrik Potgieter and Falls Roads. Access is easy with dedicated lanes allowing left and right turns in either direction, straight into the dealership’s main entrance.

Neighbours include the new Pick n Pay, Trin-ity West School and the Little Falls Christian Centre.

A hop and a skip from Clearwater BMW you can fi nd Clearwater Mall, Lifestyle Crossing and the new Cradlestone Mall with many other major brands conveniently situated to simplify your shopping experience. Managing Director of Clearwater BMW, Athol Quin points out that the move has taken a while because it was so important to make sure that the best location became home.

“We are closer to our customers than ever before and therefore better able to meet their needs.”

Athol and Nelson Sosibo started Clearwa-ter BMW 11 years ago after a career at BMW South Africa spanning 15 years. As an indepen-dently owned BMW dealership, Clearwater has fostered a “family oriented culture”.

“Many of our staff members have been with us from the very beginning and we are proud of that – after all our staff members are what make us different.”

A recent addition to Clearwater BMW is the Motorrad Dealership. Mannie Koutsoudakis, Dealer Principal and an expert on motorcy-cles, started the business in March this year. With Mannie at the helm, Clearwater is already a leading Motorrad Dealership and with the move will become one of the largest in SA.

BMW is committed to delivering mobility for future generations by taking up the challenge of performing in all three fi elds of sustainability: economic success, social responsibility and en-vironmental Protection. The new dealership is a state-of-the-art facility that enjoys many envi-ronmentally friendly features, including energy-effi cient type lighting, light harvesting in the workshop, motion sensors, photovoltaic cells, environmental car wash, hot water reticulation and shopfront glazing.

“BMW is a tremendous company with a string of exciting products, from the exciting 1 Series to the luxurious 7 Series and the dy-namic M Sports Cars in between. BMW owners understand the difference and are proud to be associated with the brand.” At Clearwater we are very excited about the future and appeal to all our customers to come and visit us. We are proud of our new dealership and hope we meet your expectations in every respect.”

Unique care centre opensat Waterval VillageFlorida Glen — Waterval Village was excited to share the opening of their new Unique Health Care Centre with the Record on Sunday 1 Sep-tember.

On Spring Day the Village was happy to treat their residents to a tour of the new fa-cilities and some wine in celebration of their recent accomplishments.

Waterval Village Manager Kon van der Westhuizen told the Record that they were sat-isfi ed with the decision to transfer the manage-ment of their care centre to Unique Health. Unique Health took over the management of the facilities in July, at which time the total re-vamp commenced.

“This place looked old and the facilities weren’t used optimally so as to care for the maximum number of patients.

“There were rooms we didn’t use to their full capacity. This revamp changed the layout and brought about innovative facilities and treat-ment.”

According to Van der Westhuizen and Unique Health’s Élise Porter, an additional 80 square metres were added to the facility that now boasts 30 beds, a rehabilitation centre and aftercare facilities.

“Around 1,3 million was spent on the over-haul of this centre, but we did so with the greatest enthusiasm,” Van der Westhuizen told the Record.

“We hope to offer the best care for Waterval Village residents and are excited to open our doors and hearts to them,” Porter later said.

She says that by Sunday 10 residents already had moved into the care centre for treatment.

Further development plans are being dis-cussed, according to Porter, who doesn’t want

to reveal more just yet.The Village management later treated the

Record, themselves and other residents to a three-course lunch prepared by their new chef Brett Murray, whom they were excited to in-troduce.

The moment we interviewed him, “I just knew that he was the man for the job and the proof is in the pudding,” Porter said just be-fore the ribbon was cut at the offi cial opening ceremony.

“We still are busy with the fi nal touches on some of the rooms but I trust that our nurses and other staff are happy and excited to report for work on Monday morning.”

Toastmasters, "whereleaders are made"Florida — Toastmasters is an organisation that has clubs in countries all over the world and embraces different cultures and languages to accommodate different people.

However, as a fi rst-time Toastmasters partici-pant within just a few months of having joined the programme, you most probably will realise how the capacity of your dreams and ambitions will have accelerated into the direction that you prefer, according to Florida Toastmasters pub-lic relations offi cer Dawn Hemming.

“It is quite an overwhelming experience – but with the needed focus, there is no chance of you falling off track.

“Essentially what happens is that you become aware of your greatest capabilities, you become willing to take justifi ed risks and you gain the self-confi dence that you always wanted.

“But, the trick is that you have to be aware of your ability in order to expand your capability.”

Hemming expresses pride in a member’s achievement to start a college club.

On 6 August at St Augustine College, a Flor-ida Toastmasters member held a meeting that was aimed at enhancing cultural activities. This was after the Corporate WinterCon for Toast-masters International event that took place at Anglo American in Johannesburg in July, which featured motivational speaker Douglas Kruger.

The meeting was led by a member of the Florida Toastmasters Club, Professor Micheal Glencross.

More such meetings at the college will be held twice a month during lunch breaks. The meetings will be open to all students from the campus.

At the Florida Toastmasters award ceremony on 20 August, Onelenna Mtezuka received a trophy for the best prepared speech. She is a qualifi ed Latin-American and ballroom danc-ing instructor. Dick Hallett and Margaret Roodt tied for the Best Impromptu vote.

Events at Kloofendal this springKloofendal — Everyone is looking forward to what spring has to put on the table for chil-dren at the Kloofendal Nature Reserve writes APIWE MJAMBANE and MATHILDE MY-BURGH.

This September the Kloofendal Nature Re-serve will be hosting a series of children’s events as part of their school holiday programme re-served for both parents and children.

Friends of Kloofendal’s (FroK) Karin Spot-tiswoode says that children and parents should round up and get ready for the greatest adven-tures this spring.

Children will be allowed to explore through-out the reserve. As part of the experience they will be tour-guided through an expedition to go looking for animals, learning about nature and plants, capturing insects, fi nding interest-ing rocks and playing games.

“Children need to bring their own food parcels, water and drinks as there are no tuck shops at the reserve.

“But there are ablution facilities in the am-phitheatre area,” says Karin.

FroK will be handing out sample jars to col-lect anything that will be of interest, however, unfortunately all nature treasures and captured insects belong in the reserve.

FroK will be hosting a Bundu Bash Adven-ture on 25 September from 9am to 12 noon, with an entrance fee of R80 per participant.

Bring out the artist in youOn Friday 27 September from 9am to 12

noon the Kloofendal Nature Reserve will host an expedition called Art from Nature.

Children will walk around with a fi eld guide to collect grass fl owers, seeds, twigs and leaves to express their creativity through nature.

FroK will provide all that are needed such as paint, paper, brushes and Carlton rolls. Partici-pants should bring their own food and drinks for breaks.

There are sanitary ablution facilities and picnic facilities should you wish to relax and watch nature take its course. Each participant (children and adults) is to pay R120 for the day.

Junior Ranger programmeThere will be a children’s goldmine adven-

ture on Saturday 28 September from 9am to 12 noon at the Kloofendal Nature Reserve. Each participant (both children and adults) is to pay an R80 joining fee.

“Snacks will be provided but it would be best for parents to bring along picnic lunch for after the walk,” says Karin.

On Monday 30 September from 9am to 12 noon, children from age fi ve to 12 are being given the opportunity to explore the nature reserve by partaking in the Nature Adventure Walk (R80 per child and R50 per parent or grandparent) followed by a junior ranger pro-gramme at the FroK Environmental Education Centre. Children are to bring lunch and drinks. There is no fee expected for assisting the par-ticipant or grandchild in the Junior Ranger Programme.

‘Record’ intern is a poet in motionWitpoortjie — Originally from Pefferville in the Eastern Cape, Record intern Apiwe Mjam-bane is a poet in motion, as was discovered on Wednesday 21 August.

Record journalist Mathilde Myburgh was surprised to learn just how “artsy” Apiwe real-ly is. What is usually referred to as slam poetry or spoken word poetry is Apiwe’s forté, and the Record was graced with two live performances during August.

“I have visions and they count for some-thing,” Apiwe wrote when asked to describe what makes her a poet.

“Poetry is yet to be proclaimed as the evolu-tion of language in the future.”

Apiwe explained to the Record that her love of talking inspires her live performances.

“It all started in 2005 when I was complet-ing Grade 9 at the East London Science Col-lege in the Eastern Cape. I didn’t know much about urban poetry at the time but I wanted to deliver an assigned oral task in a new, more exciting way. I had just discovered that I can communicate differently. I can speak poetry and it was my secret at the time but I knew that I would pursue it later in life.”

In 2010, with her move to Sandton, Johan-nesburg, Apiwe began attending and perform-ing at open mic nights and poetry bars in the city. Studying journalism at the Boston Media House in Sandton opened doors for her and Apiwe ended up co-hosting a poetry session called the Word Movement Club.

“The audience is always appreciative and we try to bring out the big guns when we perform,” Apiwe said, referring to her “crew” of urban poets called the Mid-Ocean Trenches. Apiwe is currently part of a spoken word organisation called the Wordnsound Live Poetry and Music Series, which takes place at the Market Thea-tre Lab in Newtown every fi rst Saturday of the month. Her crew also performs at the Cud-dle Sessions at the Nikki’s Oasis Jazz Club in Newtown on the last Saturday of every month.

“There is a difference between a slam and an open mic session – slams are more competi-tive with each poet trying to top the one that performed before him, while open mic grants you the opportunity to address any topic of

Shop in aid of the elderlyRoodekrans — A new charity shop in Roodekrans envisions a positive change in the community by assisting its elderly residents.

Owners Johnny and Sherrill Fouché invited the Record to snoop around the newly laid out premises of the Care 4 Charity shop in Ridgevale Shopping Centre on Wilde Aman-del Avenue.

“Our goal is to contribute to the upliftment and improvement of the lives of the aged in our community,” they explained.

The Fouchés have been involved in charity for a long time with institutions such as the Rainbow Village and helping other less privi-leged residents.

“It was during a meeting with Tornado Park residents that this idea took shape. I noticed a growing need among our elderly Roodepoort residents – their small pensions don’t stretch as far as it used to.

“We have been open for two weeks now, can you believe it?” The Fouchés expressed their gratitude for what they have achieved thus far and for the kind response by the immediate Roodekrans community in stocking the shop. Help also has come from Krugersdorp, and Ridgevale Primary School adopted the shop as their pet project for a quarter, with Laer-skool Helderkruin following suit.

“It is a two-way street,” Johnny said, refer-ring to their dependence on residents’ dona-tions. In the two weeks since its opening, the shop has received 84 donations.

“By far the most interesting item in the shop is that chess set,” Johnny explained, pointing out a wooden chess set with a story.

Johnny had suffered a stroke in recent years and died momentarily on the operating table. All he wanted when he woke up, he said, was to play chess again – and so the set was made specially for him.

Since the Fouchés’ will be donating their profi ts to Roodepoort Care for the Aged and Klein Helderkruin Retirement Centre, goods are sure to fl y off the shelves, creating the need for more donations.

“We accept any kind of donation that Roodepoorters can assist us with.”

Furniture, books, clothes, glassware, cut-lery, crockery, shoes, toys and so-called white elephants are more than welcome at the Care 4 Charity shop.

“Who knows, you might just fi nd a great treasure here!”

The shop is open from Monday to Friday from 9am to 6pm, and on Saturdays from 9am to 2pm. Johnny can be contacted on 061 020 1860 for further information.

Johannesburg behind in issuingclearance certifi catesRoodepoort — While the City of Johannes-burg (CoJ) takes up to eight months to issue clearance certifi cates required to conclude property transactions, Mogale City (Kru-gersdorp) consistently managed to issue them in under two weeks.

Fred Steffers, managing director of Apex Property Brokers said that he and many of his fellow estate agents had suffered sub-stantial losses because of their inability to conclude sales transactions for properties in Johannesburg (which includes Florida and Roodepoort).

“We have had instances where it has taken upwards of eight months to get a clearance certifi cate from CoJ, which means that the property in the Johannesburg metro – which includes Florida and Roodepoort – cannot be transferred from the buyer to the seller in the deeds offi ce.

“This largely is due to the incompetence of staff at the Braamfontein and other service centres where staff are trained and motivated inadequately to deal with queries.

“In contrast, Krugersdorp often manages

Smile, you're on cruelty cameraMaraisburg — The Roodepoort SPCA ap-proached the Record with a desperate plea for donations to help them when collecting evi-dence.

Roodepoort SPCA manager Mandy Cata-nach believes that a few decent cameras will assist the SPCA in capturing evidence for their cases against cruelty. Catanach says that tech-nically it is not in their job description, but they try to conclude their investigations into cases of alleged animal cruelty as quickly as possible.

“We do have phones and donated older cameras but the photos they produce are not necessarily up to standard and in some cases, because of their quality, don’t prove anything.

“Some new and proper cameras, like the ones journalists use, could really assist us in evidencing our claims against cruel people.

“Our older donated cameras just don’t do the trick anymore.”

Cattanach thanks residents for their dona-tions to date but emphasises the importance of new cameras.

“Our photos don’t look professional when they’re printed off a phone and put in the docket.

“Let’s make our case against animal cruelty stronger.”

Residents or companies interested in spon-soring these cameras can contact Mandy Cat-tanach on 072 868 0478.

interest.”Although Apiwe writes out, plans and prac-

tices some poems beforehand, where others might be delivered as a response to another performance, on the spot.

“If you try to read my poetry, it would make much less sense than when I speak it – in writ-ten form it lacks proper punctuation and the enjambment messes with the pace at which you read it,” says Apiwe, who always jam-packs her poems with fi gures of speech and literary and cultural references.

“Even butterfl ies started feeling humans in their abdomens,” she quotes from one of her poems.

“Someone had to say something for another to know.”

to issue certifi cates within a matter of days,” Steffers said.

“The Mogale City council clearly is going out of its way to ensure that they deliver a quality service to its ratepayers.”

David Letsie, a member of the Mogale City Mayoral Committee (MMC) said he was proud of the high level of service his council managed to deliver.

“We know and understand how important it is to issue clearance certifi cates in the short-est possible time because buyers, sellers and estate agents depend on us to conclude their transactions.” He said staff at the city’s service centre were highly trained to ensure that they perform their jobs optimally and to meet the needs of consumers.

Steffers said the experience he and other es-tate agents had at the CoJ offi ces was the exact opposite of their experience at Mogale City.

“After standing in lengthy queues for hours, hard-pressed consumers are given a reference number.

Gardens packed but no punchPoortview — Old Mutual Music in the Gar-dens’ latest event attracted what seemed like the entire Roodepoort on Spring Day, 1 Sep-tember.

The main attraction at this event held at the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden in Poortview was Prime Circle with opening acts Jet Black Camaro and Naming James.

Although nothing negative had been said about this particular show, there were some minor sound issues.

After all that hype, Prime Circle delivered a seemingly watered-down show, that didn’t pack the punch one would expect from a rock band of their stature.

This, however, didn’t bother the large crowd

who cheered them on and seemed to enjoy every song.

Nonetheless, these performances are very affordable and offer music lovers a memo-rable live music experience in the heart of nature. Old Mutual Music in the Gardens re-main an initiative that is worthy of being sup-ported.

Wenners in die onderskeie kategorieë is as volg: • Mej Hoërskole – Terize Kotze (Bastion), 1ste prinses – Nandi Oosthuizen (Bastion), 2de prinses – Mariza Mendonca (Bastion)• Mnr Hoërskole – Ruan Fourie (Bastion)• Mej Laerskole – Kisha dos Santos (Rapport-ryer), 1ste prinses – Carolene Visser (Rapport-ryer), 2de prinses – Corrine Human (Rapport-ryer)• Mnr Laerskole – Michael Sloane (Rapport-ryer)• Mej Kleuterskole – Kyra Ross (Helderkruin)• Mnr Kleuterskole – Josiah Stroh (Fairland)• Hoërskole Idol – Magaret-Ruth van Staden (Barochell Christian Academy)• Laerskole Idol – Victor Mynhardt

Principal retires after 23 yearsRoodepoort — Princess Primary has wel-comed a new principal to fi ll the shoes of long-time principal of 23 years, Derrick Elias following the latter’s retirement.

The new principal, John Sithi was wel-comed with open arms by educators and pu-pils at a farewell party held for their beloved Derrick at Silverstar Casino recently.

Joining the celebrations were offi cials from the Johannesburg District 12 as well as Prin-cess Primary School Governing Body (SGB) members.

John offi cially was announced principal on Monday 1 July. Staff members of Princess Primary wish Derrick a happy retirement.

Ridgevale Women's Day brunch a successRoodekrans — Mothers of the Ridgevale Primary School Parent Teacher Association (PTA) organised a fabulous Women’s Day Brunch on Saturday 31 August.

PTA committee members Anthea Frone-man, Candace Rich, Elizabeth Pitcher and Mamohau Phatlani decided that this year the proceeds are to benefi t Cansa.

“With this event we wanted to raise funds for both the school and an organisation of our choosing.

“We chose Cansa because cancer is such a big struggle and the organisation does wonder-ful work,” said Elizabeth.

The proceeds from ticket sales and special raffl e tickets were to be donated to Cansa.

Cito from Wonderboom was a guest speak-er and entertainer at the event, and the PTA called on Pastor Dannae Isaacs to motivate the women and girls attending the event in a beau-

tifully decorated Ridgevale Primary School hall. Melony Walker, a Cansa representative, also spoke to the women about the struggle with the disease and their upcoming events. Zara Harvey, make-up artist and hair stylist from Capture Colour shared the latest make-up trends with the audience.

“We have a great attendance and to me, this is a nice bonding experience with my daugh-ter.”

Guests stood the chance of winning a la-ser treatment voucher, a Hakuna Matata spa voucher, an Avon hamper or a nail voucher.

Elizabeth says that the PTA hopes to make this brunch an annual event and might throw a mother-daughter tea into the mix next year.

The Ridgevale Primary School is hosting a Christmas market on Saturday 30 Novem-ber. For more information, contact Elizabeth Pitcher on 083 390 8963.

Former principal of Princess Primary for 23 years, Derrick Elias with new principal John Sithi.

Enjoying the brunch: Elizabeth and Lillian Pitcher, Rebecca Hain and Simone de Witt.

Eight teams book their placein 2014 Community Cup

Roodepoort — The South African Rugby Union (Saru) has confi rmed that eight teams have qualifi ed for the 2014 Cell C Community Cup.

Despatch (Eastern Province), College Rovers (KwaZulu-Natal), Roodepoort (Golden Lions), Bloem-fontein Crusaders (Free State), Brak-pan (Valke), Centurion (Blue Bulls), Sishen (Griqualand West) and Fer-ros (Mpumalanga) have booked their places in next year’s toughest club competition.

Roodepoort fi rst team’s chances in next year’s competition will be all but easy though, as they have been drawn in Pool B along with the 2012 National Club Champions and 2013 runners-up, College Rovers as well as Free State’s top open club, Bloemfon-tein Crusaders.

College Rovers, logically the favour-

ites, recently won their eighth consecu-tive Moor Cup title.

The other team most likely to qual-ify in Pool B is Welkom Rovers (Grif-fons) with the fi fth and fi nal team to join the pool being a wild card team.

Roodepoort qualifi ed in the grand-est of fashions for the 2014 Commu-nity Cup as they went unbeaten to win the Golden Lions trophy. In the 2013 Community Cup they were knocked out by Brakpan in the quarter fi nals by losing 39-13 and eventually fi nished in seventh place out of the 20 competing teams. Vice president in charge of club matters, coaching and development at Roodepoort, Faris Sader said, “The Community Cup next year is going to be interesting. “We hope that we play College Rovers on home soil as we are not at our very best away from home. Rovers are a quality side. Because KwaZulu-Natal do not have top-qual-ity university sides, Rovers attract the best of players, which makes them a fi erce opponent.

“To travel to Durban will be a huge

ask for the boys so we hope that we could welcome them to Roodepoort where I believe we could give them (College Rovers) a run for their money.

As far as pre-season training is con-cerned Faris confi rmed that, “Training offi cially commences as from Tuesday 3 September. All are welcome — from U/19 right through to senior level.”

The other pools so far (as well as their fi nal placing in the 2013 Commu-nity Cup):

• Pool A: Despatch from Eastern Prov-ince (fi rst), team from the South West-ern Districts, team from Border, Wild Card team one and Wild Card team two• Pool C: Brakpan from Valke, Centu-rion from the Blue Bulls (sixth), team from Boland, team from Limpopo and a Wild Card team• Pool D: Sishen from Griqualand West 12th, Ferros from Mpumalanga (13th), team from the Leopards, team from the Western Province and a Wild Card team

Roodepoort pak eerskomende Saterdag 7 September ‘n Blou Bul-uitnodigingspan by Wits Universiteit.

Mapaseka closer to Grand Prix glory after Pretoria winRoodepoort — Mapaseka Speedsta Makhanya romped home in a record 33 minutes and 37 seconds to win the Pretoria leg of the Spar Women’s 10km Challenge at SuperSport Park on a chilly Saturday afternoon, 31 August.

Her emphatic victory means the Transnet runner virtually is assured of winning the Spar Grand Prix prize of a Nissan Micra after the Johannesburg leg of the Challenge series in October.

Last year’s Grand Prix winner, René Kalm-er, fi nished second in 33 minutes and 56 sec-onds and her Nedbank teammate, Irvette van Zyl (formerly Van Blerk) was third, in 34 min-utes and 21 seconds. Rutendo Nyahora (Ned-bank) was hot on her heels in 34 minutes and 32 seconds.

The fi rst four all broke the record (34 min-utes and 50 seconds) set by René in 2011.

“I had a great run,” Mapaseka said.“René and I ran together for a while, but I

pulled away from her at about fi ve and a half kilometres. It was quite a tough course – hilly and windy – but I was quite comfortable until the last two kilometres, which were downhill and really hard on my legs.

“But when you win, you forget about all the discomfort,” she beamed.

René, who was coming back from an injury that she sustained during the Boston Mara-thon, said she was happy with her run.

“I wanted to make the top three, and I did,”

she said.“My time was a minute faster than last year,

and I really feel I’m back in the groove, after a year of injury and illness.”

Irvette, also a former Grand Prix winner, also has been plagued with injury, and had to withdraw from the World Championships marathon in Moscow earlier this month be-cause of knee problems, and she was delighted with her third place.

“I had a great day today,” she said.“I’ve had so many problems with injuries

– my knee, and a foot that goes numb – but today I was able to run the whole race without stopping. Third today was like a win for me. My knee is fi ne and I’m having treatment for the numb foot, so I can control it now.”

Irvette said she had been in about 20th posi-tion at the start of the race.

“I slowly caught up with them, one by one. At about seven kilometres, I caught up with Rutendo Myahora, and she didn’t want me to pass her, but then I was able to pull away from her at about seven kilometres.”

Mapaseka is best known as a track runner, and is aiming to move up from 800 metres to 1 500 and 5 000 metres. She also is preparing to run a marathon early next year.

“My heart is still on the track, but I love these races, and I have worked very hard to win the Grand Prix. I really feel I’ve earned it,” she said.

The reintroduction of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class has been an interesting ride for the German manufacturer. There was no hiding

the fact that Stuttgart desperately needed its own premium hatch to compete with successful rivals, the BMW 1 Series and Audi A3, but the question some asked was whether Merc did enough to make an impact in this already very established market. It needed to make a big entry. With the A45 AMG, Merc has.

Let’s be honest off the bat, the A45 AMG is all about one thing. With a maximum output of 265kW and up to 450Nm of torque, the AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine is the most powerful series production four-cylinder engine in the world. No need for more proof that Mercedes-AMG means

business with this car. Before the A45, the smallest Merc toyed with

by the guys from Affalterbach was the SLK. But this is a completely different AMG product and a completely different hot hatch.

While, overall, the A45 is quite a subtle en-hancement from the standard A-Class, it has much more impressive tech than the standard series. Besides the truly remarkable 2.0-litre powerplant that is assembled following AMG’s “One man, one engine” philosophy, it also gets Merc’s part-time 4Matic all-wheel-drive and a price tag that may surprise, albeit not in a good way.

Forgetting for the moment that the car’s ask-ing price is a rather substantial R599 500, let’s consider what you’re getting for the cash.

The sensational power density of 133kW out-

contrast stitching and red-accented air vents and safety belts. While too much carbon-fi bre-esque trim feels overwhelming at times, what matters in this car is the great seating comfort and driving position and the on-point feel of the multi-function steering wheel.

Mercedes-Benz has unleashed a mighty king of premium performance hatchbacks on the world. Between incredible traction, formidable torque and unrelenting power delivery, the AMG is nothing short of a marvel and has as much performance as you could ever sanely use on the road. At a decidedly insane 0-100km/h sprint time of just 4.6 seconds and an electronically limited 250km/h top speed, you absolutely get what you pay for in A45 AMG. What you get for free is the unrivalled thrill of 46 years of spirited AMG performance.

strips even the most powerful super sports cars. At the same time, the engine delivers notable claimed effi ciency and fuel consumption of 6.9 litres/100km in combined mode, thanks to the BlueDirect tech-nology employed.

Delivering power to the road is a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is normally front-wheel-drive, apportioning power - up to a maximum of 50% - to the rear wheels, only once traction is lost upfront.

Surprisingly, the AMG suspension setup felt less harsh under test conditions than that of the previously tested A250. No explanation for it, but a welcome observation nonetheless.

The A45 AMG is truly, impressively powerful and feels the part when inside. In true AMG tradition, the standard interior trim options - which are already quite exciting - make way for bespoke seats, red

BMW with a booty that popsSTUART MOIR

WHEN the new BMW 3 Series was launched in South Africa, it was a revelation. The previous-generation sedan was a hugely popular model and the new one set the bar even higher.

Now BMW has decided to mix things up a bit, stretching the 3 Series even further and thus introducing the Gran Turismo derivative - or GT - in South Africa.

Meant to combine the practicality of a Tour-ing with the sportiness of a saloon, the 3 Series GT is a luxury hatchback loaded with space and premium fi nishes, along with BMW’s dynamic handling.

Our test unit was the 320d Gran Turismo and, admittedly, I had never seen this car in the fl esh. But I had seen it numerous times in television adverts, billboards and, of course, press images. The problem with this is that from certain angles it looks good - really good - and from others it looks like a hideous pug in need of braces.

So you could imagine my delight when it fi nally arrived at our offi ces. I’ll say this: it looks a lot better in the metal. The face is still distinctly 3 Series, while the sharp-edged rear sports a booty that pops, so much so that the load area boasts a boot capacity of 520 litres, which outstrips the 3 Series Touring by 25 litres.

This means loading and unloading is a breeze, as the practicality of a hatchback shines while the everyday usability of a sedan means lugging passengers around is easy.

Handling and performance are top-notch, as one would expect. Our 320d GT was powered by a four-cylinder diesel engine, which is now renowned for its incredible frugality, while maintaining a sporty demeanour. Maximum power output is 135kW with 380Nm of torque on tap.

If you’re hoping to make a quick getaway by pinning the gas pedal to the fl oor, this ag-ile diesel will take 8.0 seconds to scuttle to

100km/h from standstill and has a top speed of 230km/h.

Speed, however, isn’t the diesel’s defi ning feature. Instead, this stunning German is more focused on sipping the now-costly fuels. In fact, BMW claims that the 320d GT will use 4.9 litres/100km and emit just 129g/km of Co2.

It’s a functional and well-rounded package that delivers a good drive. Switching between Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Eco Pro modes allows the driver to best fi nd the driving mode that suits their needs. Once Sport or Sport+ is engaged, the steering instantly becomes sharper and more driver-focused, allowing you to tap into the car’s performance.

However, for everyday usage, Comfort and Eco

Pro are perfect, as it delivers a softer and more comfortable drive.

There’s no denying the 3 Series GT is a car that targets a very niche market and unfortunately it comes with a bit of a hefty price tag. The entry-level 320d GT will retail for R450 000 before emissions tax. Our test mule was also comprehensively specced with over R200 000 worth of extras. So while the cabin and the exterior was by no means lacking in styling and tech, it did push the price into the R700 000 mark, which seems a lot for a 3 Series with a plumped-up boot.

However, if you want something distinct that exudes style and is more practical, then maybe the 3 Series GT has a place. BMW certainly think so.

A harmonic Audi A3 keeps delivering

•ad

THE ROAD test of this Audi A3 Sportback was supposed to be nothing more than a quarter page editorial with a basic driving impression, because, let’s be honest, there’s not much to say about it. It’s the same brilliant car I drove a few months ago, but with two extra doors.

I was going to say exactly that, but it seemed unfair to do so. The A3 is such a good car that I can’t not harp on about its magnifi cence. Besides, the additional doors mean it now faces a chal-lenger in the shape of the new Mercedes-Benz A-Class, as well as tough competition from within its own extended family.

So the question is whether you should buy the Audi or save a little and get the Golf 7. I’m going to eliminate the A-Class from this company im-mediately for one very good reason: it’s a good car that deserves its current sales success, but in the company of these two it felt a bit… mediocre.

The Golf 1.4 TSI Trendline retails for around

R275 000, while its A3 1.4 TSI sibling retails for R8 000 more. Apart from obvious design and subtle suspension-setup differences the average man probably won’t notice, they are one and the same. The Audi is probably R8 000 more simply because it’s an Audi and its badge will impress the neighbours more than the VW badge stuck to the front of the Golf.

Styling-wise, it’s more of the same. Both are equally inoffensive and both will age extremely well. On the inside though, it’s a different matter.

As both these cars are from the same parent company, they share a few key attributes such as attention to detail and a quality feel. It’s certainly not a case of the Audi feeling more premium than the Golf, because that simply isn’t true.

The big difference between the two is the concept around which the interior was designed. Volkswa-gen has gone for a traditional approach where everything is exactly where you’d expect to fi nd it. The A3, on the other hand, is minimalist. There’s nothing more than is absolutely necessary and

GERHARD HORN

I love it. It makes for a harmonious environment that goes exceptionally well with the refi ned ride quality evident in both cars.

The quoted performance fi gures are also exactly the same. The 1.4 TSI unit delivers 90kW and 200Nm of torque, which is enough to haul it to 100km/h in 9.3 seconds. Claimed fuel consump-tion is quoted as 5.2 litres/100km. Even the Co2

emissions fi gure is 120g/km on both websites, so it’s quite clear that neither party is embarrassed to be so closely affi liated to the other.

I’d be proud too, because at the moment there’s nothing that can touch these two cars. The Golf’s brilliance is perhaps better known to the gen-eral populace, but the A3 Sportback defi nitely deserves equal amounts of praise. It doesn’t mat-ter which one you choose, as you’ll be getting a class-leading car either way.

In this instance, it really does boil down to brand preference, because there’s nothing else to go

on. My money would be spent on the Audi, simply because I like the minimalist interior that looks like a content robot’s face. Call me stupid, but that’s the best reason I can come up with.

Editi on C a last hurrah for Merc

New Prado to build on its rich traditi on

•ad

PHOTO: NEWSPRESS

TOYOTA recently revealed the fi rst details of the latest in a long line of iconic Land Cruisers. That’s right folks, the new Prado is on its way and it will be in South Africa sooner than you might think.

The Land Cruiser is an icon to millions of off-road enthusiasts and this tradition is set to continue thanks to a new Multi-terrain Select system. Toyota says this system makes it easier for skilled drivers to tackle diffi cult terrain, but it will also assist begin-ners to refi ne their off-road abilities.

There are fi ve modes to select from and the system gives the driver guidance while automati-cally controlling power and braking inputs. The Multi-terrain Monitor also increases the driver’s awareness of the immediate surroundings and the intended path of the car.

The system is controlled via a colour display on the centre console, which - in addition to controlling all of the above - will also serve as an information display for the new angle gauge, traction-control operation at each wheel and differential-lock-operation screens.

The interior upgrades include new switchgear, trim fabrics and new interior colour schemes. The design of the second- and third-row seats has also been improved, so practicality won’t be an issue. Safety performance has been further enhanced through the addition of a Rear Cross Traffi c Alert system.

The 3.0-litre diesel engine now complies with Euro5+ emissions regulations, but no output fi gures are available yet. - Motoring Staff

MERCEDES-BENZ is introducing a limited-edition variant of the popular C-Class. The Edition C will likely be the last version of the current C-Class, as an all-new model will be making its debut in 2014.

The Edition C upgrade is available on the sedan, estate and coupé models. The styling updates include an exclusive radiator grille with high-gloss black inserts and chrome trim fl anked by darkened headlamps. Further standout features include chromed tailpipe trims and an Edition C badge on the wing.

On the inside, the Edition C has sports seats trimmed in Artico man-made leather with contrast-ing stitching in blue and Alpaca Grey. This stitching

is also found on the gear lever and door panels. Other interior enhancements include a three-spoke steering wheel wrapped in Nappa leather.

The Edition C is only available in the C300. Its petrol 3.5-litre V6 delivers a power output of 185kW and 340Nm of torque. The C300 accelerates to 100km/h in 6.9 seconds and its top speed is limited to 250km/h.

The Mercedes-Benz C300 Edition C sedan derivative will retail for R499 443, excluding emissions tax of R6 669. As with all Mercedes-Benz passenger cars, the 6-year/100 000km PremiumDrive maintenance package is standard. - Motoring Staff

New Kia Soul to stun Frankfurt

•ad

KIA’s all-new 2014 Soul will make its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week.

The new Soul is visually not that different from the model it replaces. The main styling elements, like its upright stance, squared shoulders, high-mounted tail lights and SUV ride height have been retained. Think of it as a styling evolution rather than a brand-new design. This time, however, customers will have the option of choosing the colour of the roof.

The biggest technical change for the new Soul is the adoption of an all-new platform, based on that of the latest Kia cee’d. Kia claims greatly improved ride and handling compared with the outgoing model, as well as more mature and refi ned

on-road behaviour. The new Soul is also bigger in every direction.

Leg, head and shoulder room are increased for all passengers, while the cargo area is increased by 4% to 354 litres (plus additional under-fl oor storage) with the rear seats upright.

Buyers will be able to choose between the latest versions of Kia’s 1.6-litre GDi petrol and CRDi diesel engines, as well as six-speed manual and automatic transmissions. Both engines are carried over from the outgoing model and feature improved effi ciency with lower emissions.

The all-new 2014 Kia Soul will go on sale across Europe early next year, while the South African released date is yet to be confi rmed.

AD BAN WILL HAVE LITTLE EFFECT

Dear Editor,

Your opinion piece Can advertising ban curb road deaths? in week 34’s issue gave much food for thought.

I want to differ from Rob Handfi eld-Jones’s statement that advertising sells alcohol and that banning said adverts will have a positive effect on curbing road deaths.

I hold that it is not alcohol per se that is ad-vertised, but a specifi c brand. Advertising is all about brand awareness. It is not the advertising that has the biggest infl uence on drunken driving,

but ineffectual policing of roads, laughable sen-tences for trespassers and a lack of hard-hitting ads on the dangers of drinking and driving.

In the end, one must start at the beginning: road-traffi c lessons at school, teaching social responsibility and policing the areas around well-supported drinking holes, not only Montecasino.

Herman Laubscher

Dear Editor,

Your article Can advertising ban curb road deaths? in week 34’s issue was a well-balanced and factual one.

What really needs to be advertised is the fact that, fi rst and foremost, the real truth about alcohol is that it is probably the fi rst-known anaesthetic. The fi rst drink starts anaesthetising one’s brain, which is why doctors often rather prefer elderly patients to have one drink at night instead of taking a tran-quiliser. The more you drink, the more unconscious you become, so behind the wheel of a vehicle, it is only by the grace of God that you manage not to kill either yourself or someone else.

Alcohol was used on warships a couple of hundred years ago. When they needed to amputate a limb, they administered a good shot of rum so that the sailor didn’t die of shock.

What we need to do is educate the young, par-ticularly about the facts. Alcohol is primarily an anaesthetic, but is also useful in the pharmaceutical industry, where it is used benefi cially to produce disinfectants and also has many other uses.

The real problem of drunken drivers is not be-cause alcohol is abused; it is more a moral issue. Some people will always be selfi sh and not have the attitude of Rob Handfi eld-Jones, as stated in the last paragraph of your article, so they will claim they can handle it.

The adverts should at least tell the truth that they are selling anaesthetics.

SOLUTIONS WON’T WORK IN SA

Dear Editor,

I concur with week 34’s opinion piece Can ad-vertising ban curb road deaths?

Banning alcohol advertising will not curb drinking the stuff. Look what happened in the USA during Prohibition. I believe we should have the same attitude as Australia towards alcohol: if the traffi c police fi nds it in your car, you get a citation.

Unfortunately, for that to be successful, we fi rst have to get our metro policing on the same level as that of the fi rst-world countries. Quite frankly, I cannot see that happening here in the foreseeable future with all the corruption in the country.

Due to the nature of my work, I drive around town more than the average person. I have noticed, since 1994, an increasing number of traffi c lights, road signs, barriers and trees being knocked down by

I don’t think that banning alcohol advertising will do any good. By banning advertising, all the

motorists. I put this down to drunken driving, un-less the number of heart attacks and strokes are on the increase.

I recently had someone from the USA visit with us and he was appalled at the lack of policing on our roads and our poor road manners. I personally place the blame squarely on the shoulders of our country’s leaders. Until they take responsibility, nothing will change.

government will be doing is losing income from advertising and someone will lose a job.

I think that the only way is to have jail time without the option of a fi ne for the driver and the cop that takes a bribe. The highly paid think that they can buy their way out of any situation, but if they know that they will spend time in jail, it might make them think twice before drinking and driving.

psychoanalysis, believed that we enjoy witnessing violence because it allows us to entertain and satisfy our destructive impulses without us actually harm-ing ourselves or others. Guess it’s true when they say that one man’s pain is another man’s pleasure.

But how do we stop this fi xation on the gory, par-ticularly when it affects so many other road users, let alone the victims of the accidents.

Well, in recent years, countries like the UK have started erecting visors at the scene of an accident to try and minimise the amount of carnage motor-ists can see from the road. It’s in its infant phases because any sort of wind blows the structure away, but it is a start.

I guess, ideally, the only way to prevent rubber-necking is through courtesy to one another. However, this human trai t has been happening for ages and I doubt it will stop - it’s in our very being. I just wish it won’t clog traffi c as badly as it does.

Rubbernecking: thrill-inducing inquisivityRubbernecking: thrill-inducing inquisivity

Our insatiable desire for blood and gore is surely fuelled by the movies. The bloodier the better.

A roadside scene tickles our curiousity insatiably. Photo: Newspress

Humans are a strange bunch. They thrive on chaos and destruction. If you don’t believe me, just look at any world war or how we wipe out an entire species for personal gain, like the highly endangered rhino.

Our insatiable desire for blood and gore is surely fuelled by the movies. The bloodier the better. Series like Dexter and CSI has meant that we now fi ll our spare time with bloody scenes and it has become as common as a drive to work. It’s a part of us and has become our reality.

Perhaps this is the reason why rubbernecking is becoming such a craze on our roads. The term is defi ned by Urbandictionary as “to drive slowly by a car accident (or site having emergency vehicles) and turn the head to see anything gory.”

It’s by no means a new phenomenon, but it seems like more people are doing the act of gawking at carnage to get their ‘fi x.’ The act itself is unsettling to say the least, but it’s the train wreck that usually follows, which is the real nuisance.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not for or against people staring at horrible car wreckages as dis-membered body parts lay scattered across the road. What you chose to look at or ignore is your business. I do, however, have a massive issue when your morbid curiosity for the accidents interfere

with my and many other motorists’ trip home.Recently, I was travelling home and on route to

suburbia I found myself in massive traffi c delays at a time and place when there is usually nothing but smooth sailing. Angrily, I slowly crept in my homeward-bound direction and because traffi c was so badly backed up, I couldn’t see what the problem was.

Eventually I reached the point of the problem. A taxi had somehow lost control and swerved off the road completely and down an embankment. What remained was an overturned taxi, looking worse for wear and sadly a massive body count with more blood than I care to share. What amazed me was just how badly backed up traffi c was when the vehicle involved wasn’t even on the road. All the lanes were still open as the emergency services were occupying only the yellow emergency lane. Technically, traffi c should’ve been fl owing normally,

albeit perhaps a bit slower as we moved past the emergency personnel.

But to idle and sit in heavily congested traffi c so a few fellow motorists can satisfy their blood lust gets my blood boiling. Although, can I really blame them? It’s the saying your parents always mumbled to you at the sight of anything gruesome: “don’t look, don’t look”. But we all know this merely fuelled our curiosity.

It’s diffi cult to deny, because while we curse the driver in front of us for staring at the twisted metal carnage and causing traffi c delays, once it’s our turn to pass the incident we are inquisitively drawn to it. Even if blood and gore isn’t your thing, a small part of you can’t help but feel an urge to glance over and see what the hell it was that caused this massive delay in travel time.

But remember what I said about humans being destructive creatures. Carl Jung, who founded
