A MERE three days before his death, Stepping Stone Hospice patient Brian Sargent married his long-time love, Gisela Rall, in front of family and friends in an emotion-fi lled ceremony held in his room at the hospice’s in-patient unit on November 2.

Brian (67) had been diagnosed with cancer only six weeks before, and died on the evening of November 5 – but not before fulfi lling his promise to Gisela.

The couple met at a biker function over 16 years ago. “He kept asking everyone for my number,” recalls Gisela. “He eventually asked me out, and for our fi rst date took me with him on a Toy Run charity ride.”

Both divorcees, Gisela was initially reluctant to remarry. “I felt like I’d been there, done that. But Brian was persistent, so in February this year we decided to set a date.”

The big day was planned for January 5, 2018 and Gisela already had her dress.

Gisela contacted Stepping Stone when it became clear that treatment and other interventions were no longer an option. “The ambulance we arranged to transport Brian broke down on the way to collect us, so we only managed to arrive at Stepping Stone after 8:30pm on Wednesday.”

Despite the late hour, Gisela says that clinical services manager Sister Sheryl Newman and CEO Tersia Burger were waiting to receive them with open arms.

As a director of the Jasmine Lotus Foundation, an organisation that harnesses the power of philanthropy to help improve and change lives, Gisela was already well aware of Stepping Stone Hospice.

“The Stepping Stone staff have been absolutely amazing,” Gisela said before her wedding ceremony. “I cannot believe how quickly they got everything together for us to make our wedding possible, and cannot say thank you enough.”

CEO Tersia, speaking on behalf of the Stepping Stone Hospice team, said: “We would like to thank the late Brian, Gisela and their family and friends for allowing us to be a part of such a touching moment in their lives.”

Alberton Record News • Nuus 15 November, 20172

GAUTENG SAPS is investigating a case of culpable homicide following a fatal road accident on September 9 on Kliprivier Road.

The accident claimed the lives of three victims.

The RECORD previously reported that no legal authority was available to assist at the scene.

According to a source, a white Corsa with three people inside was parked in the yellow lane. The driver got out of the car.

The source at the scene of the accident told the RECORD that a grey Mercedes, whose driver was apparently under the infl uence of alcohol, hit the Corsa and the man. He also stated that the Mercedes must have been travelling at an extremely high speed.

The driver and passengers in the Corsa died instantly.

The driver of the Mercedes sustained no injuries.

A number of ambulances, two fi re trucks and tow trucks were at the scene fi rst.

“Multiple people repeatedly requested assistance from Brackendowns SAPS, Mondeor SAPS as well as JMPD and EMPD for over three hours. No one from

any of these departments responded. It is their job to contain this accident scene,” the source told the RECORD.

“EMPD said it is JMPD’s area and Brackendowns SAPS said it was Mondeor’s area and vice versa,” the source said.

CPF members arrived to regulate traffi c and close down the scene.

“We really appreciated the CPF members. While they were trying to regulate traffi c, another car drove into a CPF member’s bakkie after the woman apparently told the members that they were not legal authorities. So one accident scene became two accident scenes.

“The thing that bothers me the most is that there were no police or other legal authorities there to make arrests. The ones at the scene cleared the scene and also managed to get the address of the deceased,” the source told the RECORD.

“Does this really mean that there is an area on Kliprivier Road which is ‘no man’s land’ where no legal authorities will attend to emergencies?” the source asked.

Family members of the deceased contacted the RECORD to ask what had happened to their children.

After multiple calls and emails sent to

the involved parties (Brackendowns and Mondeor SAPS as well as EMPD and JMPD), the RECORD has to date received no response.

The RECORD then contacted the provincial commissioner of police. The response from them was immediate and they are busy with the investigation.

According to Capt Pinky Tsinyane, communications offi cer for the SAPS’ provincial offi ce, the case was registered at Mondeor Police Station.

“In response to the complaints and allegations against the SAPS of delayed response and non-attendance of the scene, the provincial commissioner of police in Gauteng, Lt Gen Deliwe de Lange, has with immediate effect sanctioned a departmental investigation to ascertain whether or not the allegations are in fact true. The appropriate steps to be taken will be determined by the outcome of this internal investigation,” said Tsinyane.

In light of this media enquiry, specifi cally with reference to cases where the public cannot access any police station telephonically or otherwise, the public is encouraged to report emergencies such as this accident by calling the SAPS emergency line on 08600 10111 or 10111.

Families want closure after fatal accident

THE sentencing hearing for Jarred Silverman, the man who was convicted on one count of attempted murder, has been postponed again.

On Friday, November 3, the young boxer from the South was at the Palmridge Magistrate’s Court to hear his fate, but the sentencing was postponed to January 12, 2018.

The court did hear from Bradley Swartz, one of the gunshot victims at the festival where Silverman discharged his fi rearm.

Swartz told the court how his social life is not what it used to be and that he doesn’t go out much any more.

Silverman’s defence lawyer tried to dispute this by saying he (Swartz) has

been witnessed and could be seen on social media attending boxing matches and taking part in sports, etc, and that he has gone on with his life and is living normally.

“I go out sometimes, but I don’t go to clubs any more and I call ahead if there is some social gathering to fi nd out if Jarred is there. If he is, I skip it,” said Swartz.

The judge asked Swartz whether or not he goes to church, to which Swartz replied: “Not any more.”

“What about forgiveness? Look at our country’s history, where Nelson Mandela, who went to prison for 27 years for nothing, forgave the evil people who put him there,” said the judge.

Proceedings continued. The merits of

a custodial sentence which would not include jail time was discussed.

At one point, Silverman’s father interjected by putting up his hand to ask for an adjournment to discuss something with their counsel.

There were a few other points discussed, namely a violent incident that had allegedly taken place shortly before the incident, where it is stated that Silverman was assaulted by Swartz’ brother and father.

It was agreed that Silverman should be declared unfi t to carry a fi rearm.

The judge said he had a lot to consider and needed time to do so, and thus he postponed the sentencing to next year.

Court was adjourned.

IT has been just over a year since the murder of Ané Diana Jacobs (16) and still no positive results or arrests.

Her bruised body was found half-naked in a veld close to the Alberton rugby and soccer clubs, about 500m from the soccer club, in Alberton on Tuesday, November 1, 2016. Her cosmetics bag was found a few metres from her body.

Ané went missing on October 29 and her picture had been circulating on social media since the Pink Ladies organisation shared her poster.

According to Facebook posts from one of her friends, she was last seen at a club in Alberton North on that fateful Saturday night. She was a learner from Hoërskool Alberton.

Her family is desperate to know what happened to their beloved Ané, but no further information has come to light.

A social media page, Justice for Ane Diana Jacobs, was created and throughout 2017 friends and family shared their messages for her.On November 1 this year the following was posted on the page:

*Elise Jacobs - “Today was the day that we got the call can’t believe its been a year. Sussa ek mis jou oneindig baie. Eks bitter bja lief vir jou en wens ek kon tyd terug draai en jou beskerm het. Jy sal my engel sus bly vir altyd #bloodforlife #susiesviraltyd

*Joy Anderson - “My heart aches for all of you!”

*Cheryl Rowland - “So we cry for you the day you left us the day we remembered we didn’t say all we wanted to.”

Anybody with any information is urged to contact the investigating offi cer, Capt Redelinghuys, on 083 459 6877, or the Alberton SAPS on 011 861 6800.

Every time the RECORD enquired about the case during the past year, the RECORD was assured that the SAPS and investigating offi cers were following all leads and that they were still investigating.

The RECORD has again requested comment on Ané’s case and it will be published as soon as it is received.

One year without Ané

YET another armed robbery took place at Alberton City Shopping Centre at approximately 11.30am on Friday, November 3.

Staff from the Donna-Claire clothing store were held at gunpoint and the store robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash and merchandise.

An undisclosed number of suspects managed to fl ee before security offi cials arrived on the scene. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. To avoid compromising the case, full details of the incident

cannot be disclosed to the public. The matter has been handed over to the SAPS for further investigation.

Shoppers are urged to report any suspicious behaviour to security staff (situated around the centre) and/or centre management immediately. “The safety of all patrons and shoppers is and always remains the centre’s top priority and we will continue to remain alert,” said Kurt Keshwar on behalf of Alberton City Centre Management.

The Micheals family, his wife and two children need help from the Alberton community in locating Desmond, who is commonly known as Oupei by the Eden Park community.

Anyone with information can contact the Eden Park SAPS 011 385 2988 who opened a missing person fi le.

A PENSIONER, Phyllis Souls, is looking for Cedric Trevor Juwa who is the biological father of her granddaughter Sharon Juwa (11).

Cedric Juwa, a Malawian national, must please contact Phyllis on 079 538 3086. The girl’s mother, Ronell Juwa, passed away in 2009.

Help find Cedric

MISSING: Desmond “Oupei” Michaels has been missing since October 31.

THE founder of The Hair Team in Michelle Avenue, Randhart, passed away in her sleep at the age of 62 on November 6. She will be sorely missed by many people.

Beverley was the mother of three children, the grandmother of fi ve and the great-grandmother of one. At the time of her passing she was single (although one can say she was ‘married’ to her kids), but even her ex-husband remembers her fondly as a loving, kind-hearted woman.

According to her very heartbroken children, she was a friend to everyone and for her children she was the perfect combination of a mom,

a friend, a role model and a pillar of strength. “She was well-known in the community because she was always friendly, excited and kind. She welcomed everyone with open arms and was a friend to all,” said her eldest child, Tanya Jordaan.

“She was larger than life and took care of everyone, especially her children and grandchildren,” added Tanya. “She was always at our houses visiting us and spending time with the little ones. Her motto was ‘Ohana’, which means that family is everything and no-one gets left behind.”

Beverley established The Hair Team salon in 1988. She

knew her colleagues for years and they were also like family to her. Jean Delaney, who has known her for 22 years, was her ‘wusband’, or work-husband and Joyce Mkonza, who worked for her for 29 years, was her right-hand woman.

Beverley believed in angels and when she saw a feather lying around, she saw it as a sign that an angel was nearby. “When we found my mom has passed away, a pile of feathers laid in front of her door,” said a teary-eyed Natasha Fernandez, her second child. “That’s how we know she is dancing with the angels now.”

Her funeral service was held on November 13.

HEART OF GOLD: Beverley de Wet passed away at the age of 62. She will forever be remembered as a kind friend to everyone.

Police give clothing to primary school THE Eden Park Social Crime Prevention Unit, under the leadership of Sgt Mita Baloyi-Badi and Sgt Esther Khoza visited Pheasant Folly Primary School in Extension Nine in Palm Ridge to distribute clothes to learners on November 9.

The sergeants were accompanied by Sgt Ronney Ramara and Const Victor Mphapuli from Germiston Flying

Squad who is responsible for collecting and distributing the clothing.

“I know many charity groups and churches that are eager to donate clothes to needy children. Whenever I get a donation, I arrange with these two sergeants to identify a school in the area. Seeing happy smiles on the learners’ faces brings joy to my heart,” said Ramara.

The school staff and parents thanked the team for its kind gesture. The learners were allowed to pick and choose what they wanted and this pleased every one of them. Some parents helped their children to pick the correct sizes.

HAPPINESS: Sgt Mita Baloyi-Badi (centre), Const Victor Mphapuli and Sgt Ronney Ramara with learners after receiving clothing items.

Burst pipe fi lls house with waterTWO families in Lancia Street experienced a disastrous occurrence at 3am when water came down on their homes like a storm breaking on October 20.

Wayne Thomas told the RECORD that he was asleep and when he woke up he was thinking that heavy rains were falling but then he heard his neighbour calling his name.

“When I got out of bed, I found myself standing in knee-deep water in my bedroom. As I moved to the kitchen, I found that the whole house was fi lled with water. When I got outside, I saw what looked like a river coming through my gate. A water pipe outside my property burst with water running into both me and my neighbour’s properties.

“I felt happy my neighbour woke us up. He said he was sleeping with his arm hanging down the bed when he felt his arm getting wet. With water up to his knees, he checked his taps but they were closed. He discovered the burst water pipe and woke us up,” said Wayne.

EMM’s water department

was summoned and they arrived within an hour and shut down the water supply which left Eden Park without water for about 12 hours.

Considering his spoilt furniture and fi nishes inside his house and the paving, Thomas estimated his damage at about R60 000.

SASSA’s early paymentsWITH the South African Social Security Agency's (SASSA) announcement social grant payments for December will be made earlier.

SASSA said although payment dates for pay points were printed on benefi ciaries' receipts, it wants to ensure that benefi ciaries know they will receive their payments after November 28.

Funds will be available for collection at ATMs and stores until December 22.

The last date of payments at Sassa cash pay points will be December 15.

Cardholders should also take note that the expiry date of their cards has been extended beyond December 2017 and the cards don't need to be replaced this year.

The minister and deputy minister of social development wish all social grant benefi ciaries and their families a peaceful festive season and a prosperous New Year.

DAMAGE: Wayne Thomas standing in water that was fl owing almost a metre deep through his home coming from a burst pipe outside his property.

THURSDAY is usually the collection day for rubbish dustbins in Eden Park. For years, the known pattern or work method was that one EMM worker would assemble all the dustbins at one place in the street.

After the emptying of the dustbins and the truck moving to the next group of dustbins, two workers would then return each empty dustbin to the appropriate gate or house number painted on the dustbin. The two workers would just keep following the truck in every street.

But now, claim some residents, this is no longer the case since a new group took over the service a couple of months ago. They just empty the rubbish dustbins and abandon them at the far corner of the street. This is frustrating the majority of the residents.

“This nonsense must stop,” said Suzie Estrice. “We don’t work for the Ekurhuleni council. I am tired of taking a risk of leaving my small grandchildren in the house to run after a dustbin. While fetching a dustbin at the far corner of the

street, anything drastic can happen at my house or to my kids.”

“EMM must bring back the workers who worked on the truck before,” said another lady, who wishes not to be named. “With them, we did not have to run after the truck. They leave the dustbins so far and if we don’t retrieve them quickly, the nyaope boys will steal them. We are tired of this weekly unpaid job we have to do.”

The EMM did not respond to this issue in time for publishing.

Rubbish collectors allegedly falling short of their duties

Pavement still not fixedTHE pavement on the corners of Hart Avenue and Hennie Alberts Street was damaged months ago and it was just left that way.

It is not clear why the paving was lifted or who is responsible, but despite Clr Alderman Bruna Haipel asking for it to be looked at for quite some time now, the municipality has still done nothing to fi x the problem.

RECORD has not received comment from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality by the time of going to print.

ALL BROKEN UP: The damaged pavement on the corners of Hart and Hennie Alberts streets.

Residents must be vigilantTHE City of Ekurhuleni wishes to dispel a hoax message circulating on social media communicating a recruitment process for the City’s “Keep Ekurhuleni Clean” programme.

The City has not invited applicants nor started the process of recruitment for the programme. Once internal

administration processes are concluded, Ekurhuleni will make an announcement and invite the public to submit applications for a fair and transparent recruitment process.

Members of the community and councillors are encouraged to report people who may be involved in an illegal

“recruitment process” to their nearest Customer Care Centre or phone the call centre on 0860 543 000.

The City of Ekurhuleni urges residents to be vigilant and guard against being swindled by fraudsters.

*Press release supplied by Themba Gadebe, EMM spokesperson.

EKURHULENI Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) responded to the complaint about the constant noise in Sabie Street.

The RECORD reported about this on September 29 where neighbours are frustrated after they’ve tried a couple of times to solve the noise problem.

According to a resident, who wishes to stay anonymous, a taxi driver who lives in the house has been playing loud music in the early hours of the mornings. “We called the police and then it is quiet for a while but soon the music is played loud again.”

“We do not want him to not party or play music but at

least turn the volume down and respect the people around you,” the resident said.

On September 17 the loud music stopped at 4.30am. “All we want is for you to respect the other people around you and think about the people with babies and the elderly,” said the resident.

The RECORD visited the house on September 20 at 9.20am to get the resident’s side of the story but he wasn’t at home.EMM replied as follows:“The area environmental health practitioner investigated the complaint about loud music and partying on Sabie Street, Brackendowns.

The owner of the premises was informed about the anonymous complaint and media enquiry. His response was that he did not hear the music and that sometimes loud music is played in cars in the street and other premises.

He also indicated that he will speak to his children staying in the house to lower the volume when playing music.

A request was forwarded to Johan Dorfl ing to send a team from the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department to monitor the Brackendowns area during routine patrols,” said Themba Gadebe, spokesperson/senior media manager from EMM.

Security Experts donate to Thembalethuy Primary SECURITY Experts, an Alberton-based organisation, visited Thembalethu Primary School, Katlehong on the morning of October 14 to hand over donations to them.

Security Experts is a customer-orientated family business situated in Alrode-South that sells, installs and repairs all types of security products. This organisation, established by Hermanus van Niekerk, has been serving residents and businesses in and around Johannesburg since January 2008.

The van Niekerk family donated R30 000 and four notebooks valued at R8 200 each to the school.

Needless to say, the school was elated over this gift and everyone gave a big, hearty applause. A few girls even joined together to sing in

joy. This is not the fi rst time Security

Experts has donated to this school and

according to Hermanus, this will not be the last time either. He shares the reason why.

“A few years ago, I had lost everything when the business I was working for at that time, went sour. Eventually, for some inexplicable reason, my path crossed with Thembalethu Primary and they gave me a very generous helping hand when they offered me a job – they asked me to install a new gate for the school.

“They paid me so generously, it brought me to sheer confusion … but it saved me. I bought a new car at a very low price and had enough money to kickstart Security Experts. It was God’s plan and His miracle. Thembalethu Primary was His tool to bless me, my family and our business. I will continue donating to them to sow God’s seed and express our undying gratitude,” said Hermanus.

CHEQUE HANDOVER: Hermanus van Niekerk hands over a cheque to the school. Next to him from the left is principal Phillip Mayisela, Mrs Magasela and Mr Radebe.

TRINITY Faith Ministries has been in existence in Vereeniging and Germiston and in 1994 pastor Des Wilburgh established a branch in Eden Park.

On October 29, the church had a three-in-one celebration with many pastors of different churches in Eden Park and from other areas.

The church was celebrating 23 years of its existence and simultaneously celebrating the offi cial opening of the youth centre and, more importantly, the ordaining of pastor Wilburgh

who is now ordained as bishop of the church. The ordination was conducted by the highly-acclaimed apostle Henry Appies of Reiger Park.

“It was a tough journey to get where we are now. In 1994 we started worshipping in our house in a school classroom and back at home. The youth centre is completed and now it’s the main church building that needs to be built. With God’s grace, we will build it,” said pastor Lea Wilburgh.

Pastors, who are members of the Pastors Church Forum, praised bishop

Wilburgh for his efforts this far having started from a humble beginning. Pastor Jerry Marcus said: “To be a great leader, one has to be a great follower fi rst and this depicted Des Wilburgh.”

The honourable apostle Henry Appies, who has known Des and Lea for years, anointed the couple after ordaining the new bishop. Appies is from the Word Of God Ministries.

He said: “I have known bishop Wilburgh for years when he was still known as “Poenie” and I am pleased

with his dedicated work within the church. He has set a good example for even his children that moving from one church to another is not really a good practice. With his honesty, he has now built this youth centre.”

“On behalf of the church and my husband, I want to thank the Pastors Church Forum and the community for their support in all our endeavours. We thank the Germiston and Vereeniging branches for never giving up on us,” said pastor Lea.

“Everything is getting more expensive and everything is going up, except our salaries. Why do we even pay for electricity if we get so many blackouts anyway? It’s ridiculous.”

“To be honest, what prices are not going up these days? Everything - except our pay cheques. I’m convinced this is going to lead to crime increases since everything is becoming unaffordable.”

“No, this is too much! I’m scared, because this is very bad news for pensioners, especially. Looking after children and having to pay school fees are already too much.”

“It’s too much! We are all stuck with too little money. Everything is getting too expensive. I can’t even turn on both aircons in my shop to stave off the heat because it costs too much.”

“This is a rip-off because we are already a third-world country. Because the municipality is not paying Eskom, the bills are now becoming our problem. It’s horrible news.”

Your article published on page two of the RECORD of September 20 Carnage on our roads, refers: The article referred to a motor vehicle collision on Klipriver Road near the airfi eld. According to the report, a vehicle crashed into the back of a vehicle that had pulled off the road as the occupants wished to urinate.

Apparently, the CPF attended the scene after failing several times to get hold of Brackendowns SAPS, Mondeor SAPS, Ekhuruleni metro or Johannesburg metro cops to attend the scene. Shockingly, as the situation unfolded, the driver of the vehicle who apparently was under the infl uence of alcohol at the time, was not tested for this. The events, as the report suggests unfolded, are wrong on so many levels. As a former member of SAPS from the mid-1980s to mid-1990s, what happened in this incident goes against all that we were taught and all that we stood for. The basics have not changed since that time. The fi rst problem is the fact that the collision scene was not attended by anyone since it occurred in neither of the police stations’ area. Unless things have changed since my time in the service (and I don’t believe that the basics have changed at all) any member of the SAPS can act if he sees any offence occurring anywhere in the Republic. Should the member be off duty at the time, he will place himself on duty and attend to the matter. (The exact wording may be wrong but I am sure you get the gist of the implications).

There should be nothing such as

‘a policeman can’t attend to a matter because he is off duty’ or ‘he is outside his area’. The question I ask myself is: If Brackendowns CPF attended, was it not in their area? If it was, then surely Brackendowns CPF would not be operational in Mondeor SAPS’ area?

The second issue is the fact that because only a CPF member was at the scene, legally he could not perform an arrest on the matter nor could he arrange for a sample of blood to be taken from the suspect. Legally this has to be done within a two-hour period of the commission of the offence.

This was correct as far as the CPF member was concerned although I have an alternate view on how to rid the country of crime. The SAPS is critically short of members and resources - by their own admission. Surely the law could be changed to enable members of the CPF - even if they are not armed and do not attend to violent crime since they don’t have bulletproof vests etc - to affect arrests in certain circumstances such as these where waiting longer than the two hours would cause any evidence such as blood samples to be inadmissible as evidence. This is something to ponder although the real problem is that it should never happen that the SAPS don’t attend a scene. The next problem with how the matter unfolded is that I got the impression that a photographer took photos at the scene, but since a uniform offi cer didn’t attend, there was no plan drawn up of the accident

scene. If the suspect was charged with reckless or negligent driving or even culpable homicide, the plan would be necessary evidence that forms part of the case docket. Our current law states that any collision a government vehicle is involved in or where any death or serious injury occurs, a plan of the accident scene must be drawn up and placed in the docket. Since the vehicles had been removed I assume that this also would not have been done. It naturally follows that there is no way of rectifying the situation and that vital evidence is now gone or destroyed forever even though photographs were taken - according to the report. It will not even really help to take disciplinary action against anyone as it won’t change the fact that because any suspect is innocent until proven guilty, proving any case now will be very diffi cult. This could result in justice not being served for the families of the innocent victims which is not an acceptable situation.

Members of the public must be aware that in the event of any police station refusing to, or failing to attend to any matter due to an area dispute or lack of manpower, the following can be done - especially since a delay, as in this case, could permanently affect the outcome of a criminal investigation:· There is usually a commissioned offi cer in charge of the charge offi ce on most of the shifts and it is desirable to speak to him or her and obviously get details of who he or she is. This will help with

accountability.· If you are unhappy with the situation you may ask to get hold of a ‘duty offi cer’ who is available on station level. This offi cer is on duty 24 hours a day and is inter alia responsible for attending to major incidents as well as incidents where a member of the force discharges his or her weapon.· If this fails, then the station commander can be contacted as they are also on duty 24/7. In the event of him being unavailable, he will delegate this function to the duty offi cer at the station level.· If all else fails then phone the complaint through to the 10111 service. The complaints are either given to the vehicles of each station or even a fl ying squad vehicle.

A SAP 280 is opened when the complaint is issued to the offi cers. On completion of the complaint, the offi cers have to give a report back. This service will automatically determine the police station in whose area the incident has occurred and give the complaint to the correct station’s vehicle and dispatch them to attend the scene. All the calls to the 10111 service are recorded.

I am unfamiliar with the procedure on the metro police’s side but I am sure it would be something along the same lines.

The most troubling aspect is the fact that the CPF members, who are volunteering their time and resources to serve the community to combat crime, are not getting support in this instance. Apparently, the CPF member had to

attend the scene and even do traffi c control - something he is not trained for but also shouldn’t have to do.

If I am sacrifi cing my family time and I feel I am not getting the support then I will just stop patrolling – why would I continue?

We need to get back to basics with our policing or else we will lose the battle.

Having said all that, it must be noted that there are very good SAPS members at all levels and at all stations but we need to root out the bad ones if we are to stop crime. Also, as with this case, we need to attend scenes properly so as to make sure we know where convictions are justifi ed. We need to attend the scene in such a manner that we assist the courts in their effort to obtain convictions.

Be aware of your rights and the procedures as you can then ensure that your matter will get the attention it deserves. CPF members should have better communication from the SAPS’ side so people know whom to contact.Concerned resident

RECORD contacted the Brackendowns SAPS, Mondeor SAPS, Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police and Johannesburg Metropolitan Police weeks ago for comment, but we have received none by the time of going to print.

In the meantime the RECORD forwarded the letter and initial story to SAPS provincial offi ce for comment and was subsequently paid a visit by Captain Pinky Tsinyane - the matter is under investigation by SAPS’ provincial offi ces.

Going out of their way to serve

Six weeks ... and counting! Christmas trees, gift wrap, ribbons and bows, twinkling lights and everything sparkly. Time to get into the Christmas spirit and defi nitely to begin some shopping, if you haven’t begun already! No time to waste, hope you’ve made your gift lists. Something for every oneLooking around you can still buy a gift for around R100. This year I must stress, it’s not about the amount you spend but the gift, wrapped beautifully and given with love. Most people are battling with the expense of everything but will still like to give a little gift. Next week I’ll give you some gift ideas for the whole family for around R100 each. Delicious gifts to melt in your mouthLast year I bought some gorgeous

biscuits, exquisitely decorated for Christmas from Cherubs Home Industry in De Marionette Centre, Meyersdal. The made up packets of tiny gingerbread men, snowmen, stars, angels and Christmas trees were absolutely loved by the little ones in our family and actually the adults too! They were so moreish I decided I defi nitely wanted more this festive season.

What luck for me, I actually met the lady who bakes and decorates the biscuits and I’m placing my order directly through her because I’m buying quite a few gift packs as well as jars of cookies. You can buy single snowfl akes and angels to a gingerbread house, as well as a DIY house for children to make up themselves. There is also a range of ‘paint your own tree’ decorations to keep them busy in the hectic run-up to Christmas.

The biscuits mixes are Soetkoekie, ginger and shortbread and each and every one is decorated beautifully. There’s also a range of biscuits which will make the perfect gift for school teachers. You won’t believe how gorgeous they are! And the really great news, prices are really good. Phone Marésel De Koker on 082 372 5700 to order directly, especially for larger orders, or pop into Cherubs and see what they have in-store.

That’s it for this week. Shop till you drop!Julie

ON October 13, my wife and child were stuck next to the road without petrol.

A security offi cer from Fox Alberton, Pierre Pretorius, stopped to ask my wife what was happening. Apparently he was on his way home after night duty. He took my wife and child with him to buy petrol as he didn’t want to leave them alone next to the road in the early dark hours of the morning. He bought petrol and then

assisted my wife. He waited for her until she left safely.

Thank you, thank you, Pierre! I appreciate how you helped my family. You are a good person and Fox should be very proud having people like you on board. So much has changed for LigstadTHE “Ou Eufees Kerk” on Van Riebeeck Avenue, Alberton North, has been a landmark in the area since 1938. Residents and passers-by will have noticed an uptick in the activity levels at the old building over the past fi ve years where Ligstad, as an NPO, started a community project with the aim of getting the community to uplift the community.

Ligstad has reached out to the local community with various ministry projects under the Ligstad banner.

These include a pre-school, aftercare centre, developmental social services centre, training for counsellors, counselling, elderly care and music tuition.

Ligstad is a community development project functioning from Alberton North, on the corner of Van Riebeeck Avenue and Gerrit Maritz Street. It is a non-profi t organisation, with a mandate to lend a helping hand to those in need, especially children and the elderly in need.

Through each of these services rendered to the community runs the golden thread of ministering the Word of God. Whether at the elderly Bible study group or the Good News Hour for the children, or the training and counselling, walking in the Light is what drives those involved at Ligstad to uplift the community.

Ligstad has a vision to empower

the community of Alberton North to be a beacon of hope in the world we live in, and is on a mission to uplift the community, in dependence on God, by means of proactive community development services rendered by the community to the community – in order for the community to function independently of the welfare system.

(Photo: Google Maps)

Making a difference through caringALIDA Jooste is a social worker and one of Ligstad’s founding members and has been a part of the organisation since September 2012. She wants to make a positive difference in the community and let everyone know she truly cares.

Alida is unmarried and has no children of her own, but has over 300 “heart-children” who she has had the pleasure to connect with during her career as a social worker.

She loves reading, sudoku, arts and crafts and is a member of the Alberton Ladies’ Choir. However, her true passion lies in helping and caring for others.

To make a difference is what keeps her driven to reach success. She believes this is the calling that God gave her.

“My rule of life is to make a difference and to be attuned to noticing where I will be able to add value by just being who God made me to be,” she

explained. Alida also believes that

Ligstad is an organisation unlike any other.

“The Creator of Ligstad is God Himself and not men,” she told the RECORD. “Ligstad is the only organisation in Alberton that focuses solely on proactive services instead of reactively

rendering services to the community. The effectiveness of all our programmes are measured by these two questions: ‘Is it proactive?’ and ‘Will what we do lead to independence from the welfare system?’”

In her heart, Alida has a soft spot for people of all ages, especially those who have survived or are surviving hard times. What she loves most about her job is seeing how love can change someone like nothing else can. This gives her the hope and satisfaction upon which she thrives.

Alida explains how Ligstad has changed her as a person since she started there: “My faith has grown and my eyes became open to the positive qualities of every person who entered our premises. I like to think that I see people more in the way God sees them – this is certainly the biggest change I’ve been through so far.”

OUT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE: Alida Jooste, social worker and one of the founding members of Ligstad.

Jim Rosser, the preacher JIM’S goal in life is to be that one person who is able to exercise his unique spiritual gifts to serve the Lord.

His passion for the scriptures never left him and he looks forward to sharing some wonderful insights from God’s Word. Jim, whose church background is Presbyterian, has preached at St Andrew’s in Brakpan and St John’s in Boksburg since 2014.

Jim Rosser (56) has been a preacher at Ligstad in Alberton North for six months.

According to him, Ligstad is a local solution for the problems faced in the community where it is situated.

Ligstad’s projects are for the community out of the community to better themselves with people on the ground who are prepared to take the time to get involved with the people they are helping. “We are not just throwing money at a problem,” he said.

Jim told the RECORD that it’s been an interesting time for him to work with people from another religious culture, namely the NG Church. “Both the NG and the Presbyterians have a

proud tradition of Bible-based theology and this will continue to form the underlying theme of the preaching,” said Jim.

When asked about his soft spot in life, he replied: “I’m a preacher. God’s word can impact everybody’s life.”

A sense of stewardship is what motivates Jim. “God gives us responsibilities and expects us to handle them well.”

He has been married to Ilse-Louise for three years and they have one son - little Arthur-John.

His motto in life is to leave the past behind and to focus on the future. “I would like to extend an invitation to our community to come and meet with the Lord. I work full-time as a manager for a multinational engineering company. Preaching is what I do in my spare time,” Jim concluded.

PREACHER: Jim Rosser is the preacher at Ligstad.

Just let the music flowHER love for music and honouring the Lord through her talents is what motivates and drives her in life.

Ilse-Louise Herholdt Rosser is the head of Ligstad’s music school and the music ministry of Ligstad.

She has been with Ligstad for eight months.

The full-time musician was born and raised in Alberton and matriculated at Hoërskool Alberton.

“Music chose me. I’ve had a passion for music since I was little and my parents did not even know it,” she said.

When asked what makes Ligstad special, she said: “The special people at the heart of the organisation are true Christians and they are devoted to Ligstad, even if they don’t get compensated. All the different facets of this organisation, such as the music school, the pre-school and after-school care, the absolutely wonderful work they do with the elderly, as well as the special concerts that are held at the church make it a truly exceptional organisation.”

On whether Ligstad has made a change in her life she said: “Absolutely - I am astonished by the grace and warmth of the people in this organisation and have learnt so much from them. I have also learnt that God’s plan

for you is so exceptional and perfect and that you can’t imagine what wonderful things He has in store for you.

“My involvement in this church was already mapped out over 20 years ago and it is wonderful to see the culmination of His plan and also how He destined for me to be serving Him in this music ministry. As a person I have also become much calmer and more settled since being involved in

Ligstad.” Ilse-Louise is married to the

preacher of Ligstad, Jim Rosser. They have been married for three years and have one baby boy, Arthur-John. In her spare time she enjoys playing the cello and playing with her son.

“I hope that my music ministry will leave an impression and I hope for my son Arthur-John to follow in his mom and dad’s footsteps,” she said.

TOGETHER: Ilse-Louise Herholdt-Rosser with her husband Jim Rosser and their baby boy Arthur-John.

Leaving a legacy FOR him, success means to be the best person God wants him to be and he also wants to be remembered as someone who made others feel good about themselves.

Daniel Viljoen is the head of Ligstad’s school and has been helping the organisation since October 2015.

Daniel is single and loves to braai and watch television series in his free time. However, his true passion lies in uplifting people, especially children, and encouraging them to (despite the fact that nobody is perfect) be the best versions of themselves with God by their side.

The people in his life who loves him just as he is keeps Daniel driven and motivated to reach success. He believes life is a gift from God and how he lives his life is his gift back to God.

Although this is the fi rst organisation of its kind that Daniel has been involved with, he knows it is special and has potential to stand out from other similar organisations. He explained: “We, here at Ligstad should not be satisfi ed – we must

always strive to improve and do greater things to positively impact other people’s lives. If we are kind, friendly and treat everyone as equals as we are in God’s eyes, Ligstad will be a legendary organisation.”

Even though he cares about all people, children especially hold

a soft spot in Daniel’s heart. “The child you raise today refl ects the resulting adult of tomorrow,” he said. “If I didn’t have a soft spot for children, it would mean that the past two years of working at Ligstad has been a waste.”

To be remembered as someone who was a good person and who uplifted others is the legacy that Daniel wants to leave behind after he is gone. “I can’t remember a single thing Mrs Diener taught me back in 1997 when I was in grade seven; I only remember that she was a very good teacher and she made me feel good about myself. This is the type of legacy I would like to leave behind,” said Daniel.

Ligstad has made big positive changes in Daniel’s life since he became involved there. He said: “I’m defi nitely not the same person I was when I started as a volunteer. I had to learn to deal with often making mistakes – sometimes big ones. The important thing is that I’ve used what I’ve learned to improve on the person I was yesterday.”

UPLIFTING: Daniel Viljoen is on a mission to make the people he deals with become the best versions of themselves, even though no-one is perfect.

Winners announcedALBERTON City Shakers Talent Competition recently announced their winners.

On November 4, the winners experienced some fame and received great prizes after battling it out against the 18 other fi nalists.

The initial audition round took place on October 14 and was open to singers, dancers and actors between the ages of six and 21 years of age.

“The response was phenomenal from the local community with 70 initial auditions,” said Emma Griffi n-Coetzer from Figures Finesse International Models and Talent Alberton, one of the sponsors. Other sponsors included Mr Price Clothing, Maxi’s, Clicks, Takkie Town, Nokia, Choice Clothing and Matrix.

There was a fairly big crowd present at the shopping centre

to witness the event where the sound and stage was sponsored by Alberton Figures as well as the grand prize of attending the IMTA Convention South Africa at the Bazzaruto Islands in March 2018 on board the MSC Sinfonia. This is a talent convention where both local and international talent scouts are looking for the next big artist(s). The fabulous Fuse Dance Duo was awarded an automatic qualifi cation to the IMTA South African Convention based on their talented dancing ability.

All the fi nalists received prizes on the day and the top four winners were announced live at the close of the competition.

Fourth place went to The Mercy Brothers, a brilliant true a cappella singing group. Third place was awarded to the talented 10-year-old singer Bontle Mocka

whose stage presence captured the judges and second place went to the 17-year-old Simeon Van Staden (aka Simmetric). His dancing, almost mime-like performance was mind-blowing, original and entertaining and the overall winner prize went to the fabulous dancing trio, the Hybrid Mob. “Their originality and diversity with their dance sequence was amazing – they really synchronized well and were mesmerising to watch,” added Griffen-Coetzer. “Congratulations to all the winners – we look forward to seeing great things in the future from you. May the City Shakers Talent Competition only be the beginning of a long successful journey for all the wonderful talent that Alberton has to offer the industry,” said Coetzer.

CHILDREN from the Abacus Kids Academy in Florentia recently got a free educational tour of an ambulance and they told them all about what paramedics do.

Paramedics from ER24 were getting lunch across the road from Abacus Kids when the curious children saw them and tried to get their attention.

The paramedics came and spoke to them and the children started asking lots of questions.

The children were enthralled by how the paramedics help people, why they put the sirens on, where the sick people are placed, etc.

The paramedics brought the ambulance around to give the children a closer look, pulling out the stretcher and showing them

many of the instruments they use to treat patients, leaving the children in awe.

“It was an exciting learning experience for the children. It was a spur of the moment thing and it was very nice for the two ambulance people to come and teach the kids and show them something new,” said Roxane Gilbert from the school.

Alberton Record Sport 15 November, 201726

Dis mos nou lekker!

Kampioenskappe in 2016 verwerf.

Drivers ready to rockINTERNATIONAL drivers are making their way to the Gymkhana Grid battle which will feature at Carnival City from November 18 to 19.

The event has attracted a multitude of global contenders that aim to dethrone current champions in the Rear Wheel and All Wheel categories. A large competitive contingent representing South Africa is also on the cards and locals are ever keen to bring on the skid.

Other big names like Monster Energy’s Riku Tahko, the Finnish born competitor, will certainly rev up the competition especially in the All-Wheel Drive class.

Whether it’s on ice, dirt, asphalt or gravel, 32-year-old Finnish racer Riku Tahko shreds hard. Growing up in the small town of Porvoo, just outside Helsinki in Finland, it was pretty clear from the outset which

way Tahko’s career would be headed. From an early age he was ripping it up in go-karts and cross-karts, until he was old enough to graduate to full-blown rally machinery. At age 19 he won the Finnish junior national rally championship and then the very next season was selected as the best newcomer when he competed in the Finnish leg of the World Rally Championship. This season he will be competing behind the wheel of his 600bhp Mini Suomi supercar. He is a seasoned contender in this unique format of racing, boasting wins and experience in both rear wheel and all-wheel-drive categories. In addition to his talent in the cockpit, he is also an experienced driver coach and motor sport commentator, and has organised Finland’s fi rst-ever gymkhana competition. The #AutoCicus will certainly make for a weekend of all-out family motortainment.

Life is beautiful when you meet someone who keeps her word and changes life for better. Money is no longer my problem since MAMA SARA blessed me with lots of money in my account. In years I have been robbed by fake herbalists who demanded money from me without help. When I fi rst read the testimony about MAMA SARA, I never believed, until I tried to call her, just to fi nd out her services. She explained about how people get rich through Short boys, Magic Wallet, Ring money, money in the house or account and many more. I was interested in getting money in my account since I was far from her. She asked me to provide her with my account and my names and R450.00. Within 30 minutes R350 000 notifi ed in my phone. Then I went to the bank even though I was scared but there were no questions. My husband also tried Money in the house and he was shocked to see the bag full of

money. Thank you MAMA SARA for saving my life. You are indeed a blesser.

Hats off to trainer AzzieGREAT summer weather in the city of Joburg opened up the summer racing season at Turffontein racecourse hosting the Charity Mile.

It was some kind of feather in the hat for trainer Mike Azzie when Hat Puntano was steered clear of the fi eld by jockey Grant van Niekerk to win the R1-million Grade 2 Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile in sensational fashion on November 4.

To add to the fl avour of winning, IBO Cruiserweight boxing champ and celebrity on the day Kevin Lerena was once again on the winning side and this time around for his charity AACL. This is the second consecutive time that Lerena backed a winning team. Last year his charity also walked away with the fi rst prize. AACL bagged a whopping prize money of R150 000 having Caxton South – GET IT Joburg South as their media partner on the day.

Trainer Mike Azzie was elated with this win. “He showed his true worth today. Thanks to Gaynor Rupert for putting the money down and allowing me to train him. I must also say a huge word of thanks to Bomber Nel. Hat Puntano had been hanging in his work. Bomber identifi ed that we were using the wrong bit in work and racing,” he said.

He worked very hard to get Hat

Puntano in great shape during the week. The days that counted were the two days with Nel, which brought Hat Puntano to the podium on Saturday.

“I urge trainers in the country to use him. He came out to the training, worked

out what was wrong and he corrected it. Look at the result on the podium today.”

Van Niekerk had Hat Puntano relaxed on the rail just back of midfi eld as Irish Pride led Top Shot and his more fancied stablemate New Predator made their

presence felt. Coming into the fi nishing line they fanned out with New Predator placed well and Hat Puntano, still on the inside, made his move to outsmart the rest of the fi eld and gradually made his way up the rail.

Hat Puntano won by a 0.75 length lead over Social Order, with French Navy dashing for third ousting favourite New Predator. The winning time was 97.06 seconds for the 1 600m.

It was a thrilling day at Turffontein racecourse having the 16 horses racing for their 16 charities cheered on by the 16 celebrities and supported by the various media partners. It’s A Rush made a sterling job of creating a wonderful atmosphere at the Charity Mile boasting a full-size capacity crowd.

Media partners from Caxton South were Alberton RECORD, Southern COURIER, Comaro CHRONICLE, GET IT Joburg South and from Caxton East were, Germiston CITY NEWS, Benoni CITY TIMES and Boksburg ADVERTISER. All their charities walked away with R50 000.

Next up at Turffontein racecourse will be the Air Mauritius International Jockey’s Challenge on November 19.The racing calendar at Turffontein is:

Toyota’s refi ned Land Cruiser PradoSANI PASS, for those of you who don’t know,

is a stretch of gravel road that connects the lower Western Underberg area of KwaZulu-

Natal with Mokhotlong in Lesotho. Revered as one of the most challenging roads

in the world due to its winding twists, hairpin bends and frightening drops, it does however offer some truly breathtaking scenery, that is if you are piloting a vehicle with four-wheel drive. Luckily, I was behind the wheel of the facelifted Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.

The Land Cruiser name has a lineage of almost 65 years, very similar to that of Sani, and has gained somewhat of a cult-like following around the world.

Bridging the gap between the off-road ready Land Cruiser 79 Wagon and full-size Land Cruiser 200, the Prado has been nothing but a success for Toyota since its introduction well over 20 years ago. With this updated model though, Toyota has added more style, luxury and safety without compromising on off-road ability.→→ THE LOOKSAlthough still recognisable as a Prado, changes

include a redesigned front bumper, rectangular headlights and a bonnet with power domes that resemble those of the Land Cruiser 200.

It’s modern yet imposing and muscular, something I quite like when it comes to a big SUV. The new looks are functional though and contribute to the car's off-road abilty. Thanks to the higher positioned lights, the Prado has both improved wade depth and cooling. At the rear, there is the usual spare wheel mounted on the rear door and new taillights with blacked-out clusters. →→ ON THE INSIDEToyota has made some improvements to the

cabin too, which remains spacious and practical. Much like the Land Cruiser 200, the Prado features a centre tower-mounted in the dash-

board. Here the driver can control all aspects of the car including all the off-road functions.

One of the more noticeable features is the new eight-inch touchscreen infotainment display. I will admit that it is not the most visually appealing system and that it feels somewhat dated at times, especially the low quality 360 degree camera system.

This doesn’t detract from the overall luxury inside the Prado though. A new stitched leather and wood steering wheel defi nitely adds a touch of class. →→ PRACTICALLY AND SAFETY Being a Prado, you can expect loads of head and

leg room as well as boot space. I drove the VX-L which slots in above the TX and VX as the new range topper. Aside from the usual electric everything, you also get new safety items such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Sport Assist, Rear Cross Traffi c Alerts,

Lane Keep Assist and Pre-Crash Braking. →→ UNDER THE BONNETThe Prado retains the proven 3.0 D-4D engine

offering 120kW/400Nm. If I’m honest, it’s not the most eager engine around, but when it comes to reliability and durability, there is no equal. I also averaged around 11.0-litres/100km. The car is also fi tted with a somewhat aged fi ve-speed automatic gearbox. →→ OFF-ROAD ABILITYIt’s a Land Cruiser and because of that, it needs

to be a capable off-roader. Thankfully, Sani Pass presented ideal conditions for me to sample the Prado’s 4x4 hardware.

Systems such as Active Traction Control (A-TRAC), which actively regulates wheel-slip, and Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) makes traversing the rough stuff easy. The latter allows the driver to select the ideal mode depending on the ‘road’ ahead.

The system has fi ve settings; Mud & Sand, Loose Rock, Mogul, Rock & Dirt and Rock. →→ CONCLUSION On the road, the Prado offers a soft and

comfortable ride. It does however feel large but some might fi nd that appealing. It’s able to cruise the streets of Sandton as easily as it did taking us up Sani without a hitch.→→ WARRANTY AND SERVICEAll Land Cruiser Prado models come as standard

with a fi ve-year/90 000km service plan and three-year/100 000km warranty.

Peugeot has had a tough decade or so within the South African market, with slow sales for the French marque eventually leading to the axing of its sister brand Citroën locally.

It’s not all doom and gloom though as I discovered recently. the brand has a new product but with a familiar name, the now more SuV-like 3008.

→ InsIde and outWhen a dark blue 3008 gt-Line arrived at the

Autodealer office for testing, I was immediately impressed not only with its exterior styling, but also with its quirky, sophisticated interior.

the exterior builds upon the modern Peugeot corporate look first seen on the 308, which has subsequently filtered down into the updated 2008 and 208 models.

the large chrome grille, sharp, highly stylised headlamps, brushed aluminium lower bumper and triangular fog lamp surrounds all contribute to what is bold, busy, but ultimately, a beautiful front-end design.

In side profile, the car has a slightly coupe-esque silhouette complimented by the black and silver alloy wheels, along with a thick chrome strip that runs on the lower side of both doors.

the rear-end is equally stylish with textured rear lights consisting of three LeD strips on either side, as if to mimic the paw of a large cat. Both taillights are connected by a black strip which also houses

SUV thrills with the Peugeot 3008the Lion badge. the rear bumper meanwhile fea-tures a thick chrome strip and silver dual exhaust exits.

Inside, things get even better with beauti-fully designed leather seats, which also features a massage function.

As per Peugeot’s latest i-Cockpit layout, the 3008 gets the brand’s now signature, tiny flat- bottomed steering wheel, a wireless smartphone charger, fighter jet-style switches for the media system, driving and climate settings in the centre console as well as a general flow to the design of the cabin that places an emphasis on space for the passengers and a more cosseted feel for the driver.

→ drIvIng 3008Powering the entire local 3008 range is the

rather familiar 1.6-litre turbo petrol motor seen in many PSA products. All models produce the same 121kW/240Nm and make use of a six- speed automatic gearbox. the powertrain gets the job done in the 3008 with a smooth shifting ‘box and enough punch from the four-cylinder mill.

Fuel consumption was admirable too, with me only having to fill-up after covering some 650km which, with the 52-litre fuel tank, makes for con-sumption of around 8.0-litres/100km over a mixed cycle, not a far from the 7.0-litres/100km claim.

Factor the solid powertrain in with the relatively supple ride quality considering the low-profile 19-inch tyres fitted, and you have a comfortable SUV capable of reasonable driving range, a large rear

quarters for passengers as well as a 591-litre boot. → Why gt-LIne?I found myself asking why someone would

spend thousands of Rands extra to have a model such as the gt-Line when if you have a look at the specification sheet; the base Active presents the best value for money within the range, coming in at exactly R105 000 less than the GT-Line’s R519 900 sticker price.

However, I then recalled that Volkswagen and Renault have both stated that the uptake of sporty looking models are exponentially higher in South Africa versus other global markets, therefore mak- •ad

ing the gt-Line version something that the local consumer finds appealing.

→ verdIctThe 3008 is certainly a worthy finalist in the

2018 Wesbank South African Guild of Motoring Journalists Car of the Year competition.

Having ditched its MPV roots and opted for a more SuV-like approach to its exterior and interior packaging has broadened the models appeal. Combine this with the fact that it’s a quiet, com-fortable, spacious and good looking car, I feel that it is the best Peugeot currently on sale in South Africa.

WINS R250autoletter of the week

Bus drivers should take note

Dear Editor

On Sunday 22 October, I was reflecting what a pleasure Sunday mornings were here in Johannesburg as I was cycling on Restanwold Drive in Saxonwold towards Oxford Road. On the Saturday evening before, the massive storm we had caused many of the traffic lights to go out. This was the case with the intersection of Oxford Road and Englewold / 8th Avenue.

I was waiting to cross Oxford when the following happened; one of those guys who pick up plastic in the big containers came down Englewold, seated "skateboard style", towards the Oxford intersection. At the same time, a Putco bus hurtled towards the intersection.

The traffic lights were flashing red, which means it is effectively a four way stop, but no one seems to be stopping. Sweet thoughts of summer Sunday mornings evaporated as I saw in my mind’s eye how this man on his board is decapitated and squashed like a bug by the enormous bus that would surely meet him in the intersection at that exact moment.

Congratulations on winning R250 courtesy of Williams Hunt Randburg. Phone: 011 889 0722 to collect. Winnings not collected within 30 days of publication will be do-nated to charity. Winners need to produce a valid form of identification to claim prize.

Next, the bus driver visibly throws on the brakes, the skateboard man crosses down 8th Ave, and the bus continues through toward Rosebank.

My tires have not even hit the other side, when two more busses come hurtling through the intersection without a hint of slowing down. It seemed as though the consideration to slow down did not even cross their minds.

A moment later, I passed the “skateboard” man, now pulling his “wheels”. I slowed down and said something in passing to the effect of him having a guardian angel.

He didn’t seem to understand English. I cycle on, reflecting on the tragedy that could have been; an unknown, unidentified corpse in a hospital morgue and a bus driver with manslaughter on his hands.

What will it take for (bus) drivers to learn this lesson without the collateral damage?

Sarita Friguglietti

Dear Editor

I would like to answer question by Theresa Plo-os van Amstel in the Week 33 edition of Autodealer (Should there be a age limit for drivers?).

I am 72 years old, drive a Toyota Corolla, and am a registered traffic observer. Since she only spoke about old drivers, I would like to ask her how many people she has seen stopped at a stop street with one hand on the wheel and a cigarette in the other?

I have had two people change my back bumper as I always stop. Secondly, I would also like to ask her, at a roundabout, to do give way to the right, do you slow down or do you push in like some people?

As for me as an observer, I see at least five to six offenders a week for the use of cellphones while driving, and I have a dashcam to film those skipping the red lights.

I do know that some old people battle to drive, but they are not all in an old-age home as they have to drive to survive in the case of a loved one having passed on.

Dear Editor

I blame the very high percentage of accidents on the government allowing vehicles to be re-sold after an accident. The reason being no cars have a chassis anymore, so it results in a car running out of kilter after repairs.

The main problem here is seeing that the back and front wheels do not run in the same line. If you brake hard, the vehicle will tend to run all over the road, resulting in you losing control. This also goes for the majority of taxis and trucks too.

These vehicles are scrapped and then re-sold where the new owner only looks at repairing the body work. This practice should urgently be stopped to allow these vehicles back onto the road as they are death traps

the rules of the road if we do it on a regular basis. I point out the infringements to my grandchildren so that they can be aware of the rules of the road.

We see infringements like going through red traffic lights, not stopping at stop streets, making illegal turns and driving in the emergency lanes. We are the driving coaches to our young passengers and they will imitate our driving habits when they grow up. I shudder to think what kind of drivers the children will become that use minibus taxis to get to school.

The Jaguar F-Type has been a wonderful success story for the brand both locally and inter-nationally. Despite having a rather limited target market, the F-Type consistently rates as one of the best-selling sports cars in South africa.

The brand has greater ambitions though, with a more attainable, more efficient and indeed, a more lightweight version of its F-Type now being made available on local shores.

Autodealer journalist Justin Jacobs attended the launch of the 2.0-litre turbocharged F-Type range at the Kyalami grand Prix Circuit recently.

→ Those looks and inTeriorThere’s no denying that the F-Type is a stunning

vehicle to behold. We photograph many cars here at Autodealer, but the F-Type is one of the very few cars that our freelance photographers find easy to capture a great shot of, irrespective of the location chosen.

It cuts an iconic coupe silhouette and is genuinely a great homage to the legendary e-Type, with a long bonnet, short rear overhangs and muscular bulges that leave the impression of a wide, short and aggressive-looking modern Jaguar sports car.

The most important thing about the 2.0-litre though is that it has retained an almost identical exterior design to the V6, besides the new centre-mounted, single-exit trapezoidal exhaust as well as new 18- and 19-inch alloy wheel designs.

sports cars on the planet. The obvious downside to large, blown motors is both excessive fuel consumption and weight, which when a motor is mounted up front, can affect the handling of the car negatively.

Now though, there’s the Ingenium 2.0-litre turbo petrol. It’s certainly not shy in the power stakes, with 221kW/400Nm available. It may be down in power and torque, but in terms of weight, the four-cylinder F-Type is some 52kg lighter than the V6 auto variant.

all 2.0-litre models come equipped with the now familiar eight-speed automatic gearbox which has proven to be an exceptionally versatile transmission over the past few years.

The weight loss is associated with the lighter engine and therefore, the 2.0-litre model has con-siderably less weight over its front wheels. The other benefit is fuel consumption, with Jaguar claiming a rather impressive 7.2-litres/100km.

reporting live from the launch at the time of writing due to a looming print deadline, Justin found the latest F-Type to be great fun around the Kyalami circuit.

For those familiar with the interior of the F-Type, the 2.0-litre holds very few surprises. The overall build quality, design and many of the materials found inside are more than adequate, although there is the odd surface that feels a bit underwhelming in terms of quality.

The infotainment system is beginning to show its age too, with the latest system from sister company Land Rover first seen in the Range Rover Velar outperforming the F-Type’s system in terms of speed, resolution and overall performance.

→ does iT sTill have soul? One of the best aspects of the outgoing

F-Type range is the utterly ballistic powertrain options, with a sonorous supercharged V6 that screams to the heavens and of course, the rolling thunder of the supercharged V8 making the F-Type one of the most distinctive sounding

“The weight saving over the front wheels definitely translates into a more direct and satisfying driving experience. The 2.0-litre engine pulls very well and exhibits very little turbo lag,” said Jacobs.

“I did find that the sound produced by the engine was not quite as intoxicating as in the V6 and V8 models, but with the active exhaust system, there were a few instances where I experienced grin-inducing pops and bangs from the four-cylinder model." he added.

→ verdicTJustin summed the F-Type up as follows: “Thelatest entrant into the F-Type range has

made Jaguar’s sports car more engaging and exploitable, but at the same time, the attributes such as the sound and instantaneous throttle response that make the V6 and V8 so great are absent." he said.

“It’s amazing that cars that are broadly similar can feel so different. For those wanting precision and feel, the 2.0-litre is the one to have, for ev-erything else, the V6 and V8 satisfy the soul like nothing else.” he concluded.

→ service plan and warranTyThe F-Type 2.0-litre models come with a three-

year/100 00km warranty as well as a five-year/100 000km maintenance plan as standard.

Jaguar downsizes the right way

The four-cylinder F-Type has lost some of its soul, but it now has improved agility and is a more usable car on a daily basis. picture: newspress
