if that idiot on his cellphone driving behind you misses one beat, those passengers are in serious trouble. So I would not use those as passenger seats.

Something which I think many will appreciate though is the fact that access to those two rear seats is via a tailgate that opens wide, and there is a comfortable step underneath the rear bumper to support entrance and exit.

The interior of the TUV simulates that of the S10 and other Mahindra products.

The duo-tone dashboard offers a square profi le from corner to corner with a central console also sporting a small screen. From here, one can access audio settings and other vehicle info.

The console, which runs between the front seats and offers storage space and access to the controls for the electric windows and

but it is fantastic nevertheless12V sockets, is such that it lends openness to the interior.

The wide and comfortable front seats also offer armrests which, with this particular layout and ergonomics, are a necessity.

The seating position is as high as that of a 4x4 which means, in combination with the large windows, the TUV offers excellent all-round visibility.

I also enjoyed the instrument bin layout and clarity of the instruments, the steering position and feel and most of all, the surprisingly tight turning circle.

And yes, this one also talks to you, she will take you to task if you don’t use your seat belt.

The rest of the interior is light and welcoming with enough legroom in the rear and of course, adequate luggage space which can be increased by folding down the rear seat.

Performance and suspension

The TUV300 is powered by a 1.5l diesel engine kitted with a two-stage turbocharger

and produces 73,5kW and a healthy 240Nm. The engine sounds like one of the

many three cylinders which are becoming so popular in modern cars these days. Fuel consumption of 16+km per litre is achievable.

Although the power fi gures do not sound like much, the engine is willing and nippy enough for town- and open-road driving and performed surprisingly well on the Lowveld hills.

Gearing the fi ve-speed manual down to third was seldom required. The manual gearbox is smooth and precise.

Another surprise was the quietness inside the cabin, even on gravel.

I made a point of driving the gravel road from Kaapsehoop to Barberton, which in some places does offer a challenge, and communicating with Annalize never required either one of us to raise our voice.

The suspension on the TUV300 offered the biggest surprise though.

It is fantastic - it is super absorbent whatever the road (tar or gravel) threw at us - in fact, on gravel I just could not stop

smiling. If you live out of town and use gravel roads you will not fi nd a better buy than the TUV.

It will probably shame some higher-priced products as well. The “cushion suspension”, as Mahindra refers to it, is an absolute marvel, and if it does not take you by surprise, I will eat my hat.The TUV also comes with two airbags, ABS and EBD, Intellipark, immobiliser and anti-theft as standard. A three-year/90 000km service plan is also part of the deal.

Conclusion

It is not beautiful, but it is fantastic! The build quality, fi nish and fi t are good

and it leaves one with an impression of solidity and confi dence.

And considering that one will spend more time driving the TUV, than actually sitting around just looking at it, that lame front end and side views can be camoufl aged with a nudge bar and the rest.

So, I do challenge you to go and test drive the TUV300!

The exclusive Golf GTI Clubsport S has arrived in South Africa. The limited-edition Clubsport S, with 228kW of power, holds the lap record for a front-wheeldrive production cars on the Nürburgring Nordschleife race track with the time of 07:49:21.

Only 400 units have been built, and 47 of them were allocated to South Africa. This country is one of the biggest markets for the Golf GTI in the world. All of the 47 units were pre-sold by the Volkswagen dealer organisation, turning the Golf GTI Clubsport S into an instant icon and collectors’ item. The Golf GTI Clubsport S comes with a setting for the Nürburgring Nordschleife race track which can be set using the standard Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) driving profile selector.

To keep the weight down, the Golf GTI Clubsport S is only available with a manual transmission. Other components that were removed to reduce weight include rear seats, insulating material, the variable luggage compartment floor, the rear parcel shelf, and bonnet damping. A smaller battery is fitted to reduce the weight further. An aluminium subframe on the front axle and aluminium brake covers also resulted in weight savings.

This most exclusive Golf GTI has the following exterior details: semi-slick Michelin Sport Cup 2 tyres mounted on 19-inch black painted “Pretoria” alloy wheels, rear windows with a 65 per cent light-absorbing tint, “Clubsport S”-type

plates, the black painted roof, as well as Xenon headlights with cornering lights and LED daytime running lights.

An important factor for the car’s dynamic handling is that the unsprung mass of each wheel is a whole kilogram lower, thanks to the aluminium brake covers. To further improve the hot-braking performance, the

Golf Clubsport S a premier collector’s item

Golf GTI Clubsport S is factory-fitted with special brake pads on the front and rear axles.

Each of the 400 Golf GTI Clubsport S units has its production number (001/400 to 400/400) on the ashtray cover beneath the front centre console.

The driver and the front seat passenger sit

in racing-style bucket seats that provide the necessary lateral support.

The grippy Velour-trimmed sport steering wheel with a chrome GTI emblem, red stitching, and 12-o’clock mark has been ergonomically designed for optimal performance on the racetrack.

The aerodynamics and the associated downforce values of Golf GTI Clubsport S are similar to those of the Golf GTI Clubsport, with 195kW power output. Both derivatives are characterised by completely new front bumpers.

To fine-tune the Clubsport versions to give them extra stability, the aerodynamics measures generate more downforce on the rear axle than on the front axle.

The new Golf GTI Clubsport S has a special sport chassis. In the rear, the modular performance axle has been given extra potential for directional control to achieve higher lateral accelerations. Braking performance was also perfected, in particular to prevent the rear end from breaking away, especially when braking into very fast corners. Combined with the aerodynamics measures, this allows the driver to brake into bends with the Clubsport S in a controlled way, without losing driving stability.

The 2.0 TSI 228kW Golf GTI Clubsport S Manual sells for R742 000 and it comes standard with a 5 year/90 000km Service Plan, 3 year/120 000km warranty and a 12 year anti-corrosion warranty. The service interval is 15 000km.

“Tyres, for instance, are a crucial element of road safety. If you need to change your tyres before you leave, do it now. If you wait, you may find that tyre-fitment centres have run out of stock to accommodate you two or three days before you want to leave. This may impact on your holiday plans. The same goes for mechanical issues you need to resolve; do it now, before you realise it’s too late. Remember, there’s only one week left before your holiday starts,” the AA cautioned.

The AA said apart from having a route

planned before leaving, it is important that motorists are also aware of road conditions and traffic issues on the route they will be using. It said stopping to rest every two hours or 200 kilometres is vital, as driving while tired is akin to driving while intoxicated.

Here are a few tips AA recommends for your trip this year

• Wear your seat belt at all times and ensure all passengers are wearing theirs.• Do not drive drunk, or under the influence of any drugs.• Be courteous and considerate of other drivers.• Rest when you are tired, or every two hours or 200 kilometres.• Obey the speed limit, and drive to the conditions of the road.• Check your tyres and replace any balding ones, including the spare.• Check that your brakes and shock absorbers are in good condition.• Check for any cracks or chips on your

AA’s valuable advice for you this holiday

windscreen, as these may become worse on a long journey and cause problems with visibility.• Check the windscreen wipers (front and back) and ensure they are working properly. Do not wait for a heavy downpour to discover your wipers do not work.• Check that all electric components on your vehicle work. If you are in doubt, have it checked out.• If possible, stagger your departure dates to and from your holiday to avoid the heavy traffic.

“Road fatalities in South Africa are a

scourge on our nation, and must be brought under control.

“It is important that every person on our roads understands they have a critical role to play in road safety, and to take that responsibility seriously,” the AA concluded.

Driving on a highway even in the best weather is a daunting undertaking, especially for novice drivers. When the weather is bad, as it currently is over many parts of South Africa, some drivers become anxious and seem to forget the basics of highway driving. According to the Automobile Association (AA), drivers who are anxious or who disrespect the rules of the road, cause problems for others.

“Driving on a highway requires skill and patience, especially when you know there is a strong likelihood that traffic may be backed up. It’s really critical to know what you are doing, and to always adhere to the

Ten tips to make highway driving less stressfulrules of the road, even if traffic is moving slowly. And don’t underestimate your role in the free flow of traffic; even a small incident can cause delays for thousands of motorists behind you. So it’s important that you drive safely and properly at all times,” the AA said.

In a recent survey conducted by the AA, 57% of respondents

rated their driving on highways as above average. A further 21% said their driving on highways was ‘near perfect’, while only 21% said their driving was average. No respondents said

their driving was below average and only one per cent said they avoid highways where possible.

“These results indicate that too many drivers believe they are infallible on the

roads. Too often this attitude is the root of many incidents on the road where drivers blame others for the problems on the road and not themselves. This is a big problem in South Africa where statistics show that driver attitude is the cause of many crashes,” the AA said.

The association offered a few basic tips to motorists who drive on highways, especially novice drivers who may be unfamiliar with the roads.

• Keep your car in good condition

The highway is a bad place to break down. Remember any roadside assistance services will also need to negotiate the same heavy traffic to get to you. Make sure your engine, brakes, tyres, and indicators are all working properly.

• Keep calm while driving

Travelling on a highway can be stressful but it is vital that you remain as calm as possible. Also be confident on the road, and drive like you belong there. Remember that if you

constantly apply your brakes unnecessarily you will create a concertina effect of stopping behind you, which is one of the biggest causes of traffic snarl-ups.

• Know your route

If you have never driven on a highway before, it’s important that you practise first. Pick a date and time when the road is likely to be least busy such as a weekend. Also listen to local traffic reports, and monitor social media for possible problems on your route. If you are an experienced driver, have a backup route if possible.

• Know the rules of the road

Regulations are there to protect everyone, and it’s important that we all obey them. Understand the markings on the road and when you can, or cannot, change lanes. Also always indicate your intentions by using your indicators, that is what they are there for. • Learn to operate your car at low speeds

Highway driving is not always about fast driving; many times the road is congested and cars travel at slow speeds. Make sure you know how to drive at a slow speed, and in start-stop traffic.

• Enter the highway safely

When merging with traffic always check your rear-view mirror and side mirrors, and check your blind spots to ensure it is safe to join. Always use your indicators and enter the traffic at the same speed as flowing traffic. Driving too slowly or too fast can cause problems, so always be alert.

• Put away all electronic devices

Driving on a highway requires your full attention. Do not be distracted with cell phones, or any other electronic devices. Be respectful of other drivers who also want to reach their destinations safely and on time. Texting while driving is extremely dangerous.

• Keep a safe following distance

It is not always possible, especially in bumper-to-bumper traffic, but maintain as safe a distance as possible from the car in front of you. Drive according to the conditions of the road and remember you are not there to enforce the rules of the road, only to obey them. Also be aware that you may travel some stretches with a clear road ahead of you, but suddenly find heavy traffic further up. Always be alert to this, and make sure you leave enough room to slow down and stop if necessary.

• Keep calm

Driving on a highway can be stressful but it is vital that you remain as calm as possible during your journey. Remember that everyone makes mistakes (including you) and be courteous and considerate of other drivers.

• Always wear your seat belt

Just because highway traffic is slow it does not mean that you can unlock your seat belt. Remain in it throughout your journey, and remember that your passengers also need to be secured. It is the law that toddlers under three must be in a car seat.

• Insure yourself and your car

Only around 35% of all cars in South Africa are insured. If you are in an incident you have a 65% chance of having to foot the bill for any damages yourself.

Volvo 262C celebrates Designed in Sweden and built in Italy - the

Volvo 262C turns 40. Forty years ago, Volvo turned perceptions

of what its brand stood for upside down. The Volvo 262 Coupé (262C) sold signifi cantly better than expected, despite costing more than twice as much as the basic model in the 200 series.

The original Volvo 264 sedan was presented in the autumn of 1974 and two years later it was time for Volvo’s fi rst six-cylinder estate, the 265. However, that was far from the end of it.

At the Geneva Motor Show in March 1977, perhaps the most unexpected model derivative saw the light of day: a two-door coupé with heavily slanted windscreen pillars and its roof lowered by 60mm.

To perceive the car to be sleeker, the rear spare-wheel pods were removed, but the remainder of the body was identical to the 264.

What really turned the Volvo 262C into the iconic coupé it became could be found in the passenger compartment, where extravagant leather and hardwood abounded. The seats, headrests, door sides and even the curve handles were upholstered in leather.

When the iconic Volvo 1800ES was discontinued in 1973 there was no natural successor in the role of Volvo’s top-line sports model.

Volvo’s then-CEO Pehr G Gyllen-hammar saw this as a problem. It

was especially important to have a model of this nature in Volvo’s greatest export market (USA) and a new luxury coupé seemed more fi tting at the time, rather than another sports car.

Volvo’s then chief designer, Jan Wilsgaard, produced sketches for the design of the prestigious new car, but no clay model was ever built. Instead, he used a Volvo 164 that had been used to test new interiors.

It was taken to Italian designer Sergio Coggiola’s in the Italian city of Turin, where the four-door body was rebuilt into a two-door with a lowered roofl ine.

The roof was clad with vinyl and the wide C pillar adorned with three crowns - Sweden’s heraldic national symbol. On the production car, the three crowns were replaced by slightly larger versions - one of the very few differences between the production version and the prototype.

The engine in the 262C was initially a 2.7l, 104kW V6. It was shared with all the other body versions in the 260 series and had been developed with Peugeot and Renault.

Manufacturing took place in Douvrin in France under the auspices of the Société Franco-Suédoise de Moteurs-PRV company.

Volvo’s engine designation was

four decades of styleto engine blocks and cylinder heads made from aluminium, it weighed less than 150kg.

Such a niche product, built in small numbers, did not fi t into the Volvo plant’s planning in Gothenburg. Instead, fi nal assembly took place at the Italian Carozzeria Bertone, where the 264TE limo was also built.

Kits were sent to Turin where the bodies were modifi ed, painted and assembled into fi nished cars. A small badge on the lower edge of the front windscreen showed that Bertone had built the car.

For the fi rst few years, the 262C was only available in silver metallic with a black vinyl

roof. From 1979 it was also available in gold metallic with a normal, painted roof.

That year all saloon models in the 200 series also received a new rear ends with a boot that turned downwards at the rear edge.

The tail lights were also refreshed and wrapped around the body corners. In 1980 black, light-blue metallic and silver metallic with vinyl roof-colour options were phased out. In the USA, the model was sold under the “Volvo coupé” nameplate from 1980 onward.

The model year that stands out the most was also the 262C’s last. In 1981 the 200 series underwent a major update with new,

more slender bumpers and a new headlight set-up. The B27E became a B28E as the engine gained in terms of cylinder volume and produced an extra 10kW. The new colour combination was a two-tone paint job in gold and “nougat”.

The aim was to manufacture 800 units per year, but expectations for demand had been set far too

low. Apart from in 1977 when production started late in the year, and the fi nal model year, production fi gures were more than double the forecast.

When the fi nal cars were sold in 1981, they were already considered to be collectibles. In total, 6 622 cars were built between 1977 and 1981.

It was only in 1985 that the successor to the 262C was presented, the Volvo 780. The collaboration with Bertone continued, but the 780 was both designed and built in Italy.

Five things you should know about the Volvo 262C

• The 262C was not the fi rst two-door model in the 260 series. From 1976 to 1977, 3 329 262 GL models were manufactured exclusively for the North American market. They had a standard two-door body like the 242, but with a V6 engine and the far more

exclusive front end from the 260 series.• The 262C is the only Volvo ever to have

been be delivered from the factory with vinyl over a steel roof.

• The unique prototype built by Coggiola is now part of the Volvo Museum collection in Gothenburg.

• The independent fi rm Solaire built a cabriolet edition of the 262C on behalf of Volvo Cars of North America. Only fi ve units were ever produced

• Volvo’s then CEO Pehr G Gyllenhammar had a specially-made 262C as his company car. It was painted red and its entire interior was also red - even the headrests. It did not feature the usual V6 engine, which had been replaced by the four-cylinder B21ET turbo engine. The body frames and grille were in matt black, which heralded the high black grill that the GLT and Turbo would feature in 1984.

The Mitsubishi ASX has recieved a refreshed look for the 2017 model year. It now includes a new 2.0 MIVEC six-speed CVT derivative coming in at under R400 000.

Nic Campbell, general manager of Mitsubishi Motors South Africa, stated, “We have to address the current affordability needs of our customers.

Today’s economy often forces buyers to opt for lower-spec vehicles, but our new ASX 2.0 GL CVT derivative offers the comfort and effi ciency of Mitsubishi’s CVT transmission as well as its impressive standard specifi cation in a truly attractive package. When you consider Mitsubishi’s world-class safety ratings, the new ASX 2.0 GL CVT is easily the best sub-R400 000 vehicle on the market.”

The company’s new Dynamic Shield offers a striking new design centred around a new front grille, which is signifi cantly more prominent than that of its predecessor and will soon be seen on other models, such as the new Mitsubishi Outlander and the much-anticipated new Pajero Sport.

The Dynamic Shield grille combines the previously distinctive safety and performance treatments of the Mitsubishi front-end design.

Models such as the Pajero have always been styled to appear imposing, while still conveying a sense of safety and protection. The ASX and Outlander, on the other hand, feature a grille with a more aggressive and sporty design.

Changes to the new ASX include redesigned seat cushions that are fashioned with long-distance passenger comfort as the main priority.

The new Mitsubishi ASX line-up consists of fi ve derivatives, all featuring the frugal and highly reliable 2.0 MIVEC petrol engine.

This engine is equipped with Mitsubishi’s Innovative Valve Timing Electronic Control System and multi-point injection that produces 110kW and 197Nm. Power is delivered to the front wheels via a fi ve-speed manual gearbox or CVT transmission with six pre-programmed gear steps.

The 2.0 MIVEC engine is well known for being very fuel effi cient, with an average fuel consumption of 7,5 litres per 100 km for the manual models and 7,6 litres for the CVT-equipped versions. Fitted with a 63-litre tank, this gives the ASX a range of around 800 km.

Mitsubishi’s popular CVT (Continuously Variable

Transmission) offers drivers the smooth comfort of an automatic gearbox, but with fuel effi ciency similar to a manual vehicle.

The ASX boasts a fi ve-star Euro NCAP safety rating. All ASX models feature Mitsubishi’s proprietary Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution body shell, no less than seven airbags, ISOFIX child restraint mountings, and a range of dynamic safety systems that include ABS, electronic brake-force distribution and emergency brake assistance.

In addition to the above-mentioned specifi cation, the Mitsubishi GLS derivatives feature LED running lights, electronic active stability and traction control and hill-start assist as standard.

Luxury features abound in the ASX, including Bluetooth with voice control, cruise control, a multi-function steering wheel, electric windows, air conditioning, rain-sensing wipers, rear park distance control and automatic lights as standard on all models. GLX and GLS derivatives also offer a full-length panoramic glass roof, keyless operation, a full-colour touch-screen infotainment system, heated leather seats in the front, and an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, as well as a rear-view camera.

The Mitsubishi ASX is sold with a comprehensive fi ve-year / 90 000 km service plan and three-year / 100 000 km manufacturer’s warranty.

Every day one reads, hears or experiences motorcycle accidents on our roads. Some riders survive and some don’t. The proverbial “Not if, but when” is a very real fact each rider stares in the face when they swing a leg over and head out on the road.

If you ride a motorcycle, whether it is on-road or off-road, the next ride may just be a game changer for you.

The 2017 Motorcycle Accident Report is updated at the end of each month, and one can already see an increase compared to the report of the previous year. This is alarming, to say the least.

The dangers are real, ever-present, and something needs to be done.

Perhaps a national Motorcycle Awareness Ride will help.

This event is not just to create awareness for those on motorcycles. Riders often create the “wrong awareness” when they ride like a disrespectful twat, inconsiderate of other road users, and behaving like attention-seeking adrenalin junkies.

The intention of this project is to create risk awareness among riders. They need to infl uence the other road users, by creating the correct awareness, with a positive outcome in mind.

The core thus, as per the organiser, Hein

Motorcycle Awareness helps change the game

Jonker, is to educate motorcycle riders in the country to become proactive in their riding manner.

The majority (motorists) are distracted by radio, mobile devices, other occupants, thoughts, and so forth - a “luxury” which motorcyclists choose to avoid when riding. “The latter then, have to accept this and focus on not becoming a dreaded statistic,”

says Hein. Riders need to adopt and apply this mindset, become part of the solution and not the problem; change the way you think -

change the way you ride, and truly ride to live - not just because you love it!

The date for this event is set for Sunday May 14, 2017.

Should you wish to get involved in organising the ride for the Lowveld, contact Hein on 083-793-7975.

With the new generation of the E 63 S 4MATIC+, Mercedes-AMG is taking the dynamic driving limits of the performance sedan to a completely new level. The vehicle’s beating heart is the powerful 4,0-litre V8 Biturbo engine. The E 63 S 4MATIC+ achieves a new peak power of 450kW. This makes the V8 the most powerful engine to have ever been installed in an E-Class. At the same time, thanks to the- intelligent cylinder shut-off system it has been possible to increase the effi ciency of the engine signifi cantly. By accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 3,4 seconds, the new executive sedan additionally achieves a new best value in its class.

The AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive is a completely new development combining the advantages of various drive confi gurations in one: torque distribution on the front and rear axles are fully variable for the fi rst time. This ensures optimum traction, whatever the road conditions.

A further highlight is the AMG Speedshift Multi Clutch Technology nine-speed sports transmission. It is combined for the fi rst time with a wet start-up clutch. This has enabled more agile response times to be achieved.

The Mercedes-AMG E 63 S 4MATIC+ is priced at R1 868 400 and you can order yours now.

Service and Maintenance

You have the right to an accredited workshop

Les McMaster, chairman of the Motor Industry Workshop Association.

If it’s time for your regular maintenance service or your vehicle is in need of a repair and you need to fi nd a mechanic that can do the job well. Where do you start looking?

If a workshop has been accredited by a reputable association you can be assured of good workmanship but also recourse should the job not be done to acceptable standards.

Gone are the days of the having to take your vehicle to the proverbial grease monkey. “Accredited independent workshops are now run by highly skilled mechanics, with excellent service levels, administrative support, quality parts and machinery. However, the key is to ensure you select an accredited workshop,” says Les McMaster, chairman of the Motor Industry Workshop Association.

During the accreditation process a workshop undergoes a thorough assessment. Aspects including the health and safety operating procedures are scrutinised as are the premises, equipment, administration, waste removal, staffi ng and so on.

“Even aspects of the business such as parking facilities, lighting, ventilation and uniforms are inspected. The MIWA accreditation and grading process includes a 20-point document of proof of compliance to Health and Safety policies that members have to adhere to before they receive their accreditation. It is a rigorous process that we believe is essential to ensure customers know

they are dealing with professionals and feel protected,” he says.

The level of staff training is also an important aspect of the accreditation process.

“Unfortunately skills shortages are a reality. To achieve a MIWA accreditation, workshops have to prove their staff have suffi cient training and on-the-job experience as well as specifi c qualifi cations to meet the needs of their customers. Often we fi nd that mechanics previously employed at larger dealerships branch out and start their own workshops bringing with them the specialist skills to work on specifi c vehicle makes, says McMaster.

By using an accredited workshop, customers can feel reassured that they are dealing with highly-trained individuals who are at the same level, if not more advanced, than those found at dealerships. And the good news is these workshops will do repairs at a fraction of the cost of what you would pay at a dealership.

The most important benefi t of using an accredited workshop is the knowledge that there is an association you can deal with in the event of a bad service or poor workmanship experience.

Don’t be afraid to ask for proof of accreditation when contacting a workshop. If you are looking for a workshop bear in mind that there are over 2 500 accredited MIWA workshops around the country. You have the right to an affordable and professional service.

Service and Maintenance

Diesel engines are great workhorses, but they do require regular maintenance. Don’t take short cuts with your diesel-engine maintenance checklist - it will catch up with you, probably the moment the cold weather sets in or you have an urgent delivery to make.

Here are the top-10 recommendations for maintaining your diesel engine. Experienced drivers will do these tasks in their sleep. For newer drivers, it’s a handy reminder.

1. Frequent oil changes are essential to maintaining diesel engines. Check your vehicle handbook for the recommended frequency for changing oil. It’s usually around 10 000 to 15 000 kilometres, but it may vary.

2. The same goes for fi lters. Change these regularly, as they clog up really quickly and sulphur and carbon contamination can kill your vehicle’s fuel-injection system. Ensure that the fi lters either meet or exceed the OEM fi lter in your handbook.

3. Add diesel treatment to your tank when you fi ll up with fuel. It’s a chore, but it does work, helping to prevent diesel impurities reaching your engine.

4. Replace your whole gasket set if you fi nd one that’s leaking. The chances are that if one is leaking, they will all approach the end of their lives. Make sure you check the mounting bolts regularly to avoid unnecessary leaks.

5. Make sure your glow plugs are in good order. When the weather turns chilly, you may be relying on them.

6. Drain your water separators - another vital task. If water gets into your fuel system, your engine performance will suffer.

7. Replace your belts, hoses, fan clutch, thermostat and water pump every fi ve years or 250 000 kilometres.

8. Make sure you check your coolant every 50 000 kilometres - at the least you should check it every year.

9. To be on the safe side, we suggest you adjust your engine-valve clearance every 50 000 kilometres or so.

10. If in doubt, take it to a professional. This cannot be overstressed. If you are at all unsure of how to fi x a problem, have it looked at. It might hurt in the short term, but you could be saving in the long term.

Most of these jobs are pretty standard, but you’d be amazed at how many drivers don’t teach themselves the basics of simple maintenance tasks, and fail to follow the checklists provided in the vehicle manuals.

This is particularly true for younger drivers who may not have the confi dence to try these procedures for the fi rst time. It can save you so much of your hard-earned wages if you do these things in good time, without just relying on a service to pick them up and paying someone else to do them.

Popular SUV’s

Suzuki Auto South Africa has added the option of an automatic gearbox to the popular GL+ derivative of its award-winning Vitara range. The newcomer is based on the two-wheel drive Vitara GL+, and replaces the manual gearbox with a latest-generation six-speed automatic transmission.

The gearbox is a torque converter-based design, and combines the convenience of automatic gear changes and a wide spread of ratios with the option of manual override via shift paddles on the steering column.

Up to now, the automatic gearbox has only been available on the top-spec GLX version, but following strong customer demand and consistent dealer feedback, the GL+ Automatic becomes the second auto-transmission model in the new-generation Vitara line-up.

Expressing personal style

Buyers can opt for urban pack or rugged pack executions, which offer different combinations of exterior features such as spoilers, scuff plates, roof rails, side-protection strips and daytime running-light surrounds in various colours and finishes.

Elements such as the grille, fender garnishes, wheel-arch extensions, door handles, skid plates and the rear hatch can be further customised with different colours, finishes and designs to create a truly personalised vehicle.

Drivetrain and chassis

The addition of the GL+ AT model means Vitara buyers now have two front-wheel drive GL+ derivatives to choose from. Consistent across the range is Suzuki’s eager and economical M16A 1,6-litre engine.

The multipoint fuel-injected 1 586cc engine also benefits from VVT (variable valve timing) to deliver a maximum power output of 86kW and 151Nm.

Like all Vitaras, the GL+ Automatic combines an all-independent, MacPherson strut-based front suspension with a torsion beam-equipped rear axle, ensuring confidence-inspiring handling and a supple ride.

Comprehensive standard equipment

The midrange GL+ AT offers a comprehensive array of standard equipment.

Exterior features include 16-inch alloy wheels shod with 215/60 R16 tyres, as well as full colour-coding for the grille, door handles and exterior mirrors.

The spacious interior features smart-cloth upholstery with contrasting stitching, while chrome and silver accents add upmarket appeal. Both front seats offer height adjustment in addition to adjustment for reach and backrest handle, while the rear-bench seat is split 60:40, allowing each section to be folded flat individually.

The comprehensive instrumentation includes a trip computer with a digital display between the analogue rev counter and speedometer. It shows selectable

Vitara GL+ Auto offers a stylish new modelinformation on average speed, instant and average fuel consumption, operating range, exterior temperature and gear selected.

The four-speaker audio system is MP3/WMA compatible and equipped with a CD player, FM/AM tuner, USB socket and Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free telephony. A 12V accessory socket is also provided.

Extensive safety features

Véronique Gillardeau was extremely impressed by the design of the Peugeot ‘Le Bistrot du Lion’ Foodtruck. Co-director of the company, she wanted to offer tasting sessions in town centres.

At her request, Peugeot Design Lab designed an innovative travelling oyster bar. Equipped with a countertop and bar which slides out from the rear of a new Peugeot Expert, the Gillardeau food truck allows the oyster shucker to share the same space as their customers, creating a more personal experience than a standard food truck. Christened ‘La Marcelle’ in homage to the daughter of Gillardeau’s founder, the food truck has been on display near the island of Oléron in France since March 8.

The Peugeot Lab design team has designed a travelling oyster bar for Gillardeau, with the aim of creating a new and more personal customer experience. The shucker stands at the same level as their customers, who are able to watch him

prepare their oysters just as they would in a sushi bar.

Trained by a ‘Meilleur Ouvrier de France’ - a title won by French craftsmen at the top of their trade - the shucker has all their tools at their fingertips as they prepare the Gillardeau oysters. The custom-built work surface remains spotless thanks to a hatch through which they can dispose of the shells.

Peugeot Design Lab has created a food truck which is as compact during transit as it is innovative in its design of the oyster bar, which folds out from the back of the vehicle. It can be set up by a single person in a matter of minutes.

Created upon the new Peugeot Expert, it can be parked anywhere once the bar

Exclusive Peugeot truck built for Gillardeauis folded away, with its 1,9m height and 4,96m length even giving it access into underground car parks. Designers have incorporated the sink, fridge, storage

facilities, water heater and fold-out bar into the 5,8m3 usable volume.

“The design of the Peugeot Bistrot du Lion food truck, which I found out about soon after it was presented in April 2015, really impressed me. I wanted to be able to offer tasting sessions at markets with a ‘travelling

shop’ that was stylish, modern and practical. Explaining our work to my customers has allowed me to continue trying new things,” said Véronique Gillardeau, co-director of the company.

Peugeot Design Lab created ‘La Marcelle’ as an ambassador for the Maison Gillardeau.

The mobile rear wall is made from stainless steel, slate and wood, drawing inspiration from materials traditionally used by oyster farmers.

Gillardeau oysters are the result of a cultivation period that lasts between three and five years, during which the oysters are kept on carefully-maintained sites. Their shells are laser engraved as a guarantee of exclusivity. Connoisseurs love their curved, uniform shape, which promise meaty, subtly scented flesh. Marcelle Gillardeau, the founder’s daughter, worked extensively for the company in the early years of the twentieth century with energy, poise and elegance.

‘La Marcelle’ was commissioned on International Women’s Day, on the March 8, 2017. It can be seen in Bourcefranc-le-Chapus, a town which sits on the coast facing the island of Oléron. This first moving showcase for the prestigious brand will not remain the only one of its kind.

Diesel, the fuel of choice for most of the country’s transportation and various other industries, is more prone than petrol to problems with incomplete combustion, deposits and toxic emissions.

According to a new study, laws that favour the use of diesel rather than petrol engines in cars may actually encourage global warming. Although diesel vehicles obtain 25 to 35 per cent better mileage and emit less carbon dioxide than similar petrol vehicles, they can emit 25 to 400 times more mass of particulate black carbon and associated organic matter (soot) per kilometre. This

adds to staggering carcinogenic health effects and shocking mortality rates.

The introduction of Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD -15 ppm) necessitates the insertion of a lubricant by the end user to enhance the lubricity value of the diesel fuels as encouraged by the OEM’s. However, to fi nd an appropriate component to withstand the combustion temperatures is still somewhat of a mystery.

According to Pieter du Toit from Prideco Holdings, the combustion of hydrocarbon fuel in an internal combustion engine is an extremely complex event encompassing many variables, and far from being completely understood. The most important

A spoonful of catalyst helps the diesel go down

process to ensure proper combustion is the perfect mixture of fuel and air in addition to many other variables.

A chemical has been developed locally as a catalyst with sound scientifi c evidence based on a proprietary blend of isomers that will lead to cleaner burning and more fuel-effi cient cars, trucks and all diesel fuel-consuming equipment.

Vehicles and equipment using the catalyst, called PS-279-D, will decrease emissions by up to 65 per cent, according to the researcher and well-known international fuel expert, Pieter du Toit. What is more, mileage goes up by 20 per cent (during static conditions) while horsepower increases by 10 per cent in addition to also addressing the lubrication properties of ULSD without the formation of

any carbon build-up due to the unique heat tolerating characteristics of the product.

Du Toit says that due to the emission improvement and fuel savings, catalyst-treated diesel reduces the number of gases that potentially lead to global warming.

With the catalyst, therefore, the fuel burns more completely and the engine and exhaust temperatures drop signifi cantly.

Du Toit is certain that the isomers change the surface tension of the fuel droplets, preventing short hydrocarbons from immediately vaporising when diesel fuel is sprayed into the combustion chamber.

“The delay is just long enough to allow the two components to evaporate more or less in the same physical region in space and then they burn more or less together,” says du Toit.

According to Du Toit, when using the catalyst at a 0,1% (1 000ppm = 1 litre treats one thousand litres) insertion rate will lead to in a premium diesel equivalent to the Euro 6 specs.

The product contains no insidious components and is all related to diesel fuel chemistry with benefi ts that are important to be introduced to all diesel applications as a necessity.

A local Lowveld transport company (20-vehicle fl eet of varied ages) tested the product over a three-month period and reported savings between of eight to 12 per cent - with the average being eight per cent.

Now, how much is the rand value of an eight per cent saving in your fl eet?

Can you afford not saving eight per cent?

Bridgestone South Africa’s commercial arm has announced the introduction of a new heavy-duty vehicle tyre designed especially for trailers and semi-trailers.

The Firestone FT505 trailer-only general-use tyre has been optimised for free-rolling axles on trailers, providing a low cost-per-kilometre with reliable performance.

“Our key areas of focus with the FT505 have been extending tyre life, reducing irregular wear, and providing a self-cleaning action to ensure good road contact,” said Bridgestone commercial marketing general manager, Tony Burns. “Trailer tyres must continue to provide good lateral stability and economical service across a very broad set of operating weights and speeds, and the FT505 has been engineered to meet those goals,” he added.

The newcomer is available in 315/80R225 and is aimed at the regional and long-haul market dominated by semi-trailer and

FT505 sets the bar high for trailer tyres

interlink combinations. With a maximum per-tyre load of 3 750 kg at an 850kpa inflation pressure in the single role, and 3 350 kg at 825kpa in the dual role, the FT505 has been designed to provide safe, economical performance, even on combinations approaching the maximum

South African Gross Vehicle Mass of 56 000kg.

In initial comparative tests performed by Bridgestone against popular imported competitor tyres, the FT505 achieved a 10% longer tyre life. Preliminary data from the tests indicate that the tyre will have covered 270 000 km by the time the tread wears to four millimetres. As with all other Bridgestone commercial tyres, the FT505 can be retreaded to extend its usable life. It is produced at Bridgestone’s Brits tyre plant, and the company is the only

tyre maker to manufacture truck and bus radials locally. “The FT505 is the ideal trailer

companion to Bridgestone & Firestone’s Steer & Drive tyres

which provide superior performance as well as economical benefit to the

fleets,” Burns explained. “With dependable traction, superior robustness, wide load tolerance and long life, the FT505 sets a new benchmark for trailer tyres,” he concluded.

outomaties kry jy 132Nm/400Nm danksy ‘n slim VGT turbo (variable geometry turbo).

diensplan in.Die opgekikkerde Chev Trailblazer bied

Stuart JohnstonRarer than rare: a stock standard ‘70s

muscle car at Concours South Africa Will “The Judge” be back to defend its

title at Concours South Africa 2017, held this year on August 3-6 at Sun City?

One of the surprise winners at the inaugural Concours South Africa in September 2016 was a 1970 Pontiac GTO, otherwise known as “The Judge”.

The car, a Ram Air Version of the 1970 Pontiac GTO with the optional “Judge” package, took third place overall, behind a 1985 De Tomaso Pantera GT5 and a Ferrari Testarossa from the same era. It also won its own category quite handsomely.

It is testimony to the judges’ experience and eye for detail that this car, appearing visually restrained in this era of blinged-out muscle cars with giant 22-inch modern mag wheels, won the pre-1980’s sports car category in absolutely stock form, beating out some super-clean entries in the overall points tally, including the likes of an Aston Martin, some exquisite Jaguar E-Types, and even a Ferrari Daytona.

The fact is, what was considered “flash” back in 1970 looks rather tame these days, if you are talking muscle cars.

“That’s a one-owner car, which I was lucky enough to buy,” says entrant, Basil Papageorgio, an enthusiast with a wide-range in collectable car tastes, and a man

who also had some other notable entries at the 2016 Concours South Africa.

“It was such an amazing rush when my name was called out. Earlier in the weekend Ross Crichton, one of the principal show organisers, had told me that the standard was so high that I may as well load my cars up on the trailer and head back to Jo’burg. It was totally unexpected, then, to be placed third overall and also to win the pre-‘80s category with the GTO.”

Papageorgio says that the car is one hundred per cent original, and has a mere 18 000 km logged from new and it is original down to its paint, upholstery and even the rather garish “The Judge” decal set, which includes dayglow flashes over the four wheel arches and “The Judge” decals on the quarter panels.

Other “Judge” touches include the stalk-mounted rear boot spoiler, while the Ram Air option includes twin cold-air scoops on the bonnet ducting to the air-cleaner beneath the hood, atop the standard four-barrel carburettor, and the famous tachometer (rev counter) mounted on the bonnet, outside the car!

The Rally II wheels are factory correct, down to their red centre caps with PMD lettering and the tyres are period-correct BF Goodrich T/A Radials, with white raised lettering. They look rather modest in their 14-inch sizing, even when offset with chrome wheel trims.

Will ‘the Judge’ return to impress the jury?Much of this detail, so important in a

concours competition, is fairly obscure in South Africa, where very few Pontiac GTOs were ever imported back in the 1960s and 1970s. But in America, there is a massive cult following for the Pontiac GTO, and particularly the 1970 “Judge”, as this car was considered a high point in Musclecardom. After that year, government restrictions effectively watered-down the whole muscle car movement, with horsepower restrictions increasingly enforced for the next three decades!

The standard engine for this car was a 400 cubic inch V8, peculiar to the Pontiac line, and in Judge configuration it was rated at between 360 and 370 horsepower. However, pundits say the real horsepower output was well over 400, which translates to over 300kW today. “I am in two minds about entering the car again in 2017, and I will be in touch with Ross Crichton and Paul Kennard, the two main organisers, about whether they want a car like this to defend its title,” says Papageorgio.

“I have two or three other cars in mind, and I’m not giving anything away right now. But as soon as entries open for 2017, then I’ll make up my mind.”

Regarding his experience of the very first Concours South Africa held at Sun City last September, Basil Papageorgio was fulsome in his praise. “I was really surprised for what was a very first effort. The setting was

amazing, just off the golf course. I don’t think they could find a better setting for this level of car show.

“With these old cars, it boils down to whether you want a stock original car that you can admire, but has very limited street usage, or an old car that has been reworked beneath the skin. These cars, like my Plymouth Barracuda (a 9,9-litre V8 monster with huge rear rubber) and my Corvette C2 (a rare 1963 Split window model, with a modern fuel-injected Corvette V8 and uprated brakes) are so good you can hop in them and drive them to Cape Town.”

There is no doubt that in terms of general spectator appeal, when it comes to American cars, the re-worked pro-touring muscle-cars are huge drawcards, especially amongst younger petrol-heads, who relate to the “Fast and Furious” type of approach to classics.

But Concours d’ Elegance competitions are also all about originality, as much as restoration workmanship carried out to an exalted standard, so perhaps it makes sense to cater for both schools of thought.

The 2017 edition of this year’s Concours South Africa will again be held at Sun City, alongside the Gary Player Country Club. The dates this year have been moved forward a month to August 3-6, 2017.
