The process of removing vagrants living in a Moot residence’s backyard has hit a snag.

The problem was that the property had more than one owner, said DA ward councillor Elmarie Linde.

“The process was already underway but had to be started all over.”

Linde said it was not immediately clear who the co-owner was.

“The metro is in the process to try and determine this.”

About 10 people live in seven so-called Wendy houses in the backyard of a 12th Avenue home – sharing a toilet and a garden tap.

She said the owner, who lives in the house, had promised to evacuate the vagrants in January of this year, but had failed to do so.

“Residents have been complaining for months now,” Linde said.

“They say it is especially bad over weekends.”

She said the metro police were called out regularly for help.

One of the vagrants living in the backyard told Rekord they paid between R500 and R1 000 rent a month to live there.

Linde said it was suspected some of the vagrants used drugs.

The homeowner, who identifi ed himself only as Nico, said he allowed people to live in his backyard because both he and his wife lost their jobs and this was their only source of income.

He said he understood why his property was a cause for concern among his neighbours.

“We were desperate and this was our only source of income.

“We have been without jobs for almost two years.”

Linde said there was a possibility the house could be declared unsafe for habitation.

“The house has not been maintained in a very long time. It could give in at any time,” she said.

Backyard dwellings had doubled since last year “mainly due to increasing poverty”.

“Employers must start being more sensitive about this matter.

“They need to know where their employees are staying,” Linde said.

“It is time that employers make sure their workers have proper accommodation and facilities.”

Cecil Kroucamp, who lives next door to the property, had previously said the situation had become unbearable.

“The dwellers are very noisy at night, especially over weekends. “They make a fi re and there is smoke everywhere,” he said.

“Our house has been broken into more times than I can count.

“We cannot continue to live like this. Something must be done,” he said.

Linde urged residents to be responsible homeowners.

“If people take responsibility for their properties, we could easily avoid situations like these in future,” she said.

’n Ware kanniedood is hy – hierdie adjudant-offi sier by die Villieria-polisiekantoor.

“As jy na ’n siektetoestand weer terugkeer werk toe, doen altyd jou beste,” sê hy.

-Suid: Soutpansbergweg.-Oos: Jan Coetzeestraat.-West: 24e Laan.

inspuitings.Surman sê hulle het al meer as

’n 100 diere laat aanneem sedert verlede Desember.

Villieria police, along with the local community policing sector forum (CPSF), hosted an awareness day at a nursery school last week.

Police spokesperson Captain Coba Brits said the event, which took place at the CMR welfare organisation’s kindergarten in East Lynne on Thursday, was a “great success”.

“It was an unforgettable morning for the children of the CMR kindergarten and Ons Plek in East Lynne,” she said.

Brits said CPSF chairperson Thys van Wyk, ward councillor Freddie Pienaar, local businesses and members of the public all donated beverages, gifts and their time to make the morning a success.

At the event, Pienaar handed over refl ective jackets and fl ashlights to the CPSF of sector 3 for patrol purposes.

Brits said the event was a way for the police and the CPSF to show the community that together they could achieve more.

Van Wyk said the aim was to create an awareness among youngsters of how

ambulance services and the police worked “so that they know what is happening when they hear sirens”.

“We have arranged for the ambulance services to be present to give the youngsters an opportunity to interact with them,” he said.

Van Wyk said it was the fi rst time they hosted such an event with the police.

The CPSF encouraged residents to get involved in their community, not only in the fi ght against crime, but also to help each other in time of need.

Brits provided some safety tips for children:

- Be aware of your surroundings and the people around you.

- Know all the telephone numbers you will need in an emergency.

- Avoid talking to strangers.- Avoid displaying valuables where

criminals can see them.- Avoid walking around at night. Try to

always walk in groups.- Keep your cellphone out of sight.Brits urged anyone who wanted to get

involved in the station’s charity projects, to call her at the station.

“As inwoners hul deel doen, sal Pretoria skoner wees.”

How to instil healthy eating habits in your childEating healthily is one of the most important life lessons you need to teach your child, even when they are still young.

According to the most recent national survey, 14.2 percent of primary school children are already overweight, says the Heart and Stroke Foundation, South Africa.

If obesity in South African children continues to increase at the current rate, 3.91-million school children will be overweight or obese by 2025.

Consider these tips on how to teach your child about healthy eating.

Have an organised meal plan in your home

To ensure a healthy food intake pattern, try to stick to a structured meal plan when your child is home.

Having dinner every night at roughly the same time (well before bedtime) will assist your child in portion control as well as digestive health.

Danielle Garrett Don’t force your child to eatMany people will tell you that forcing your child to empty his/

her plate sometimes have detrimental effects.

Forcing your child to eat may lead to overeating later in life, and bribing your child to eat with candy, can result in

increased cavities.Take it easy when buying fast

foodsThere is absolutely no harm in indulging

in fast food every now and then, but the effects of teaching your child about fast food have lasting effects.

To minimise fast food consumption in your home, try to involve your child when preparing a meal at home. Try to make it fun and incorporate a few interesting tricks when teaching your child about healthy cooking.

Keep in mind that cooking can be time-consuming. But cooking together as a family can be regarded as a bonding experience for all to enjoy.

Encourage healthy snacking

You as the parent are in charge of what your child consumes, most of the time. It is up to you to encourage healthy snacking with your child’s lunch box.

Instead of giving your child money to spend at the school tuck shop, rather supply them with a healthy, balanced lunch box.

Stock your fridge with healthy snacksIt can be quite daunting to stock your

fridge with fresh fruits and veggies on a weekly basis, but it will have a positive outcome in the long run.

Having an unlimited supply of healthy snacks in the house for your child to grab on the run, will assist them in not buying unhealthy alternatives.

Water is lifeEncourage your child to drink loads of

fresh water. Juices, fi zzy drinks and energy drinks are loaded with sugar and unhealthy preservatives.

ADvertorial

BUSINESS BLOCKONTHEWe work so hard our whole lives that we need to and deserve to retire and spend the last phase of our adventure in a safe, pleasant and peaceful environment.

Choosing where to do so may sound simple, but there are a few things you need to keep in mind as they can have longstanding consequences.

First of all, you need to decide where you would like to retire. Many people dream of retiring by the seaside or in the bushveld – basically, wherever their “happy place” is – without realising why it is their happy place in the fi rst place. Going on holiday to some idyllic spot is, well, idyllic. But living there is a whole different thing.

You might want to consider where your friends will retire. Moving to a seaside town and then spending the rest of your life miles from the friends you made over the span of years can soon become less-than-idyllic. Suddenly, retiring where you now call home sounds much better.

If you live in a cold climate, retiring to a warm place might sound awesome – until you realise you’re not used to the weather and remember why you never moved there earlier. Also – you’re not getting any younger and the climate will have a stronger effect on your physical health than you might think, e.g. joints acting up in cold weather or asthma/lung issues reacting badly to a warmer clime.

You also need to make sure that you are near any medical facilities you may need to require – today and in the years to come. If something should happen, such as a bad fall or something more serious, will you get the right and the best medical attention in time?

Part of retirement is that you get to focus on what gives you joy. Whether you are an avid golfer, like gardening or going to the theatre, check if such facilities will be available to you where you plan on retiring. If you love a good game of golf, it is no use retiring where there are no golf courses nearby.

Picking the perfect party pack

RETIREMENT CENTRE & FRAILCARE RETIREMENT CENTRE & FRAILCARE RETIREMENT CENTRE R E T I R E M E N T V I L L A G E

Kids’ parties over the last few years have seen a bit of a turnaround trend.

When we were kids, a birthday party meant a cake, balloons, some chips and sweets on a central table and everyone running around yelling and screaming.

Then, at some point, it became a competitive sport. Parties became themed, decorations took over and elaborate party packs became the norm – basically, the kids left with more than they came, gift-wise.

Lately, however, the trend has reversed. While party packs are still an essential, they have become more personalised and practical. Which is not to say that they aren’t still fi lled with delicious treats!

When making up a party pack nowadays, moms and dads are putting more thought into it.

We have some tips on how you can pack the best party packs that will light up those little faces and make them smile big time.

Firstly, remember that a) kids love sweets and b) they have a short attention span. Don’t spend a lot of money on any novelty toys or gadgets you include in the party pack – something small that fi ts the theme of the party is all you need.

Also include something personal that will last a while, e.g. socks featuring the different heroes at a superhero party.

You can also print out theme-related

pictures and include that together with a set of crayons.

Now for the main ingredient – the snacks. While you don’t want to induce a sugar

rush and the accompanying energy burst for which your little guest’s parents will not thank you, a party pack is not a party pack without some sweet and savoury treats.

Buy mini chocolates and candy bars in bulk – this way you save money and have small yet delicious treats in the party pack. It also means that you can go for variety and volume, which will add the fun of opening the party pack.

An important thing to do is check with moms beforehand if anyone has any food allergies so that you know to avoid any treats containing, for instance, nuts.

On this note, personalise each party pack to ensure everyone gets one – it can also be a great way of extending the theme, e.g. giving everyone a superhero alter ego or special powers.

Always make a few extra in case siblings tag along or someone loses their party pack.

Lastly, remember that you will never please everyone. Get party packs that will make your kid happy!

Got the sniffl es? We thought so!Nature has a bounty of immune-

boosting foods. Let’s take a look at the star performers.

GingerWe all know ginger helps for nausea and

upset stomachs, but did you know it has phenomenal antibacterial properties?

Ginger is a great way to boost the immune system and as a bonus will also help alleviate cold and fl u symptoms.

TurmericThe second part of the trifecta is turmeric,

which contains curcumin.Curcumin’s antibacterial properties help to

stop the growth of disease-causing bacteria and also help regulate the body’s natural immune response.

Cayenne pepperThe last player in the terrifi c three spice

trifecta is cayenne pepper. It also has super-high levels of anti-

infl ammatory and antioxidant properties to increase your metabolism, boost your immune system and help fi ght bacterial infections.

GarlicThis fan favourite contains allicin, which

has antibacterial and antifungal properties. It breaks down to form sulphur which

has shown a marked improvement in the immune system and also helps with producing white blood cells.

MushroomsOkay, deep breathe: mushrooms have high

levels of ribofl avin, niacin and selenium and is also packed with antiviral benefi ts.

As if that’s not all, it also helps your body fi ght colds and fl u by stimulating T-cells, which helps the immune system by releasing cytokines to attack viruses.

Plus they have a great taste in basically any dish!

BlueberriesThese babies are rich in fl avonoids, aka

anti-oxidant compounds that reduce cell damage and improve immune response.

They also contain high levels of pterostilbene (this is a good thing), which boosts the body’s ability to fi ght bacterial infections.

Green peppers (aka bell peppers)The vitamin C levels in green peppers are

off the charts!

While citrus fruits puts in a decent appearance when it comes to this vital vitamin, these peppers pack quite the health punch in comparison.

Vitamin C stimulates white blood cell production, which is the body’s “army”, the soldiers fi ghting the good fi ght against colds, fl u and frankly all bacteria and viruses.

YoghurtNot all bacteria is bad – yoghurt contains

probiotics (“good” bacteria such as lactobacillus and bifi dobacterium), which is essential for keeping your gut and intestinal tract healthy as these constitute a large part of the body’s immune response.

By eating yoghurt, you help your body maintain a healthy balance on the battlefi eld.

While all this is great, unfortunately our modern farming methods and the effects of growing populace on the natural ecosystem means that these natural remedies have lost

some of their punch – literally. Climate change is stripping nutrients

from food crops, according to a recent study led by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

The study is a fi rst of its kind and showed that mineral, protein and vitamin content in fruits and vegetables has decreased over the past few decades.

So, make sure you speak to your friendly Van Heerden family pharmacist on a vitamin and mineral supplement to improve your daily health and also which immune booster is best during the winter months.

Turn to nature to beat those winter sniffles

NB: Rekord accepts responsibility for only one faulty insertion. Advertisers are advised to check their advertisements for possible errors on the fi rst day of publication. NO free insertion will be given on the grounds of small typographical errors that do not derogate from the advertisement. NB: Cancellation of a placement order must meet the following conditions to be efi ective: • The cancellation must be in writing • It must reach the Advertising ofi ce of Capital Media at least 3 (three) days prior to the printing date • A cancellation number must be obtained from Capital Media • Any telephonic correspondence must be confi rmed in writing to be valid • Capital Media may cancel an advertising agreement if the advertiser fails to pay his/her account within the agreed time.

Capital Media (Pty) Ltd renders a service to our clients to advertise their products and services. However, we cannot be held accountable for any misleading claims or damages that result from the use of said advertised products and services.

Readers should therefore be cautious in responding to any advertisements, in particular fi nancial and business related opportunities, unless a thorough investigation has been conducted into the business practices of the advertiser concerned.

Rekord experiences many problems with clients requesting us to comply within any possible way, to give preference to their advertisements versus that of other clients. This leads to advertisements starting with A1, Attention, or 000. It makes no sense to the reader and prevents them from making logical conclustions as to what the content of the advertisements is about. It spoils the presentation of our classifi ed advertisements and also confuses the reader, who wants to see at a glance what an advertisement is about and make a decision regarding his needs. We believe that our capable representatives can help with good advice in presenting your advertisement with original and fresh ideas.

The Tuks netball players continued their dominance of student netball by beating Kovsies 48-30 in the fi nal of the USSA tournament played in Bloemfontein last week.

There cannot be any argument left against Tuks being the best club team in South Africa Netball at the moment. The results of the local tournaments bear testimony to it as Tuks is currently also the Varsity Tournament champions.

Moreover, the Tuks players are also making their presence felt in the provincial tournaments. Last month the Jaguars won the Brutal Fruit title for a second consecutive time while Gauteng won last year’s national championships.

Both of these teams were dominated by Tuks players.

Of course, the Tuks coach Jenny van Dyk is the common denominator. It could be said that she is the fi eld marshal of all these teams – the one who strategised and drilled her troops to perfection leaving nothing to chance for each of the campaigns.

Juzelri Garbers, who played for Tuks during the USSA tournament, can vouch for it.

“Before the tournament even started each of us knew what was expected. It is all about having a brilliant coach. Two weeks before the start of USSAs, we were training at the times we were going to play our games as part of our conditioning. And this is just one example of the thoroughness with which we go about preparing to be the best we can be when it matters,” Garbers explained.

She said being so well-prepared makes it easier to be confi dent about the team’s abilities.

“There was never a moment that we doubted that we would win but we made sure never to forget that any team is only as good as the last game it has played,” she concluded.

Tuks’s USSA success means that Chanté Louw, Tshina Mdau, Marlize de Bruin, Lungile Mthembu and Jasmine Ziegelmeier can boast being part of a small elite group of players to have won all four senior national titles in South African netball.

However, there is going to be no time for them to really celebrate as from Monday they are part of the Tshwane team competing in the national championships in Port Elizabeth. It is another title to defend.

Tuks trounce Kovsies Tshina Mdau was not only one of Tuks’ stars at the USSA tournament, she is now also one of a small elite group of players to have won all four senior national titles in South African netball. Here she is in action against Maties. Photo: Reg Caldecott.

Teenage golf star Kiera Floyd validated the value of international experience when she banked her fi rst provincial title with a runaway victory in the Gauteng North Women’s Open last week.

The only player to shoot a red number on the fi nal day, Floyd’s one-under 71 propelled to the top of the pile in the A-division at Silver Lakes Country Club.

The 13-year-old closed out a six-shot victory on three-over 219 over Gauteng pair Kaleigh Telfer and Symone Henriques.

Floyd trailed overnight leaders Woo-Ju Son and Telfer by one shot at the start of the fi nal round. However, the country’s number one ranked Son, coming off a runaway victory in the Nomads SA Girls, blew out of contention with a 10 at the par four fi fth and Telfer battled to recover from a double bogey start.

The new champion had two birdies and two bogeys in the fi rst fi ve holes, followed by 10 straight pars before a fi nal birdie at 16.

“At the 16th hole the wind was behind us, right to left. I hit 8-iron and let the wind carry

it. The ball fi nished pin-high left, six feet from the hole. I knew I was leading Kaleigh and Woo-Ju, but I didn’t know what the players in front of me was doing, so I played safe over the last two holes. When I made the par-putt at 18, people began to clap and smile

and that’s when I realised I’d won. It’s been a long time coming and I’m absolutely stoked, especially with the Sanlam SA Women’s Amateur coming up next week at Umhlali,” said Floyd after her victory.

This was a watershed moment for the golfer, who has destined for a win since the Joburg Ladies Open on Sunshine Ladies Tour in January.

She hit the headlines in February as the fi rst girl to win an event outright on the 2017/18 Bridge Fund

Manager Junior Series when she beat the boys with an outstanding seven-under-par 65 at the East Course at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington.

A month later, she featured in the Nomads SA Girls Rose Bowl at Royal Cape and she was in the mix on the last day of the Sanlam SA Women’s Stroke Play in April.

A Montana teenager is heading for Romania in Eastern Europe for the F3J Class World Championships for so-called ‘Thermal Duration Model Gliders’.

Aldo Vos, a Grade 10 student of Montana High School, is the number-one junior pilot in the SA team for this exciting sport.

The rest of the team consists of the team manager and two senior pilots as well as an extra ‘tower’.

Two towers are required to pull the planes up since mechanical winches are not allowed at the world championships.

According to experts, South Africa has a great climate for radio controlled model gliders because we have sunny weather and ‘active air’

on most days throughout the year. Most people think about model

planes as toys used in a hobby. However, the sport is highly competitive and the best technology is used in building these planes.

They are build from carbon composite materials to be very strong but feather light for their size.

The wingspan allowed for these models are four metres.

In the classic F3J model glider class the objective is to launch as fast as possible, thermal for the full working time allowed and land on time exactly on a spot.

The competition is objective and points are allocated based on every second in the air, without overfl ying the working time.

Landing points are based on the centimetre distance away from a

Schoolboy is taking on the world

15-year-old Aldo Vos with his model glider during a practice session.

The 2018 SPAR Women’s Challenge theme is ‘Find your wingz’ – a theme that is challenging every member of the Pretoria community to fi nd their wings by being a vehicle for change and inspiration.

This is the third consecutive year that Cipla staff will be entering the SPAR Women’s Challenge.

Cipla is a global pharmaceutical company which uses cutting-edge technology and innovation to meet the everyday needs of all people across more than 80 countries. Their internal staff wellness team truly embodies the spirit of a healthy body and life.

“We enter the SPAR Women’s Challenge year after year as it is fi rst and foremost a very well-organised event which gives people a chance to get some exercise, irrespective of their level of fi tness. It is one of the most exciting and fun events on our annual wellness calendar,” said Melanie van Jaarsveld, manager – communication and wellness.

Cipla is also the fi rst pharmaceutical company to provide a triple combination anti-retroviral (ARV) for HIV/AIDS sufferers in Africa at less than one dollar a day. Cipla does not just provide South Africans with world-class medicines at affordable prices, but also a world where affordable healthcare is a right, not a privilege.

“In our world the fi nal measure of our success is simple – the privilege of advancing healthcare for all,” Van Jaarsveld explained.

Cipla Medro’s social enterprise division, the Cipla Foundation, drives a number of corporate social responsibility initiatives that give wings to children all over the world.

Projects include Ajuga, which constructs early childhood development centres where young children can learn, grow and thrive in a safe environment. Owethu focuses on providing access to a broad range of primary healthcare services to communities most in

need. The Cipla Miles for Smiles initiative funds corrective surgery for children born with cleft lips and palates, while Sha’p Left is a nurse-surgery driven, primary healthcare service that treats people close to home in their communities.

“We care about our fellow human beings and live up to our ethos of ‘Caring for Life’. We are proud to align our business with the SPAR Women’s Challenge and help others ‘fi nd their wingz’,’’ said Van Jaarsveld.

The SPAR Women’s Challenge’s Pretoria leg takes place on 4 August at SuperSport Stadium in Centurion. Entries are available at selected SPAR stores and online at sparladiespta.co.za

For more information and to stay on top of the latest race news, enter exciting competitions and to show your support, “Like” the SPAR Women’s Challenge Pretoria Facebook Page or follow @SPARladiespta on Twitter.

Cipla staff entering againThe staff of the global pharmaceutical company Cipla already entered and they are ready for this year’s SPAR Women’s Race in Pretoria.

Bulls do Lions a favour with their remarkable victory over JaguaresThe Bulls dealt the Jaguares their fi rst defeat in three months when they staged a remarkable comeback to beat the high-fl ying Argentinians by 43-34 at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday afternoon. The men from Pretoria did their neighbours, the Lions, a huge favour by preventing the Jaguares from even collecting a bonus point and in doing so, they opened the way for the Johannesburg franchise to possibly win the SA conference. The Bulls’ victory also means that the Sharks have a slight chance of qualifying for the play-off rounds if they can beat the team from Argentina this coming weekend.Photo: simondp@actionimage.

landing spot. The planes are fast, launches are

intense and landings put huge strain on the airplanes.

While thermaling you need to fi nd thermals to stay up for 10 minutes.

Your teammate can help with reading the air and constantly tell you what is happening in the parts of the sky you cannot see.

Vos started his interest in model planes from a very early age.

Some of his fi rst memories were of him going with his dad to the fl ying fi eld.

He owned his fi rst fi xed wing glider at age 11.

Two weeks after receiving this own glider, he was fl ying solo.

At the age of 14 he started to focus on competitive glider fl ying.

Since then he has put in all the effort to become the new number-one model glider pilot in South Africa.

Today at the age of 15 he fl ies several different classes of gliders.

Vos is coached by experienced pilots, who last year also helped another South African, Tiaan van Rooyen, to achieve gold in the F3K world championship.

The sport is obviously expensive and the South African team members will mainly be responsible for their own travel expenses to Romania.

Interested parties who want to know more about the sport or the championship can visit the SA team’s website at https://makeachamp.com/samodelgliderteam2018f3j.

The 2018 international athletics season reaches a peak in July with three major events that will soon take place.

Firstly, the IAAF World Junior Championships will be hosted in Finland from 10 to 15 July.

In the same week, the 2018 Athletics World Cup will be held in London in England from 13 to 15 July.

This is followed by a major athletic event for Africa’s best youth athletes when the African Youth Games will be presented in Algiers from 18 to 28 July.

South Africa will send three very strong teams to all three of these meetings to represent the country.

The outstanding feature of South Africa’s

teams is, however, the fact that Gauteng North (Pretoria) athletes dominate all three teams.

On the eve of their departure for the various events, Athletics Gauteng North (AGN) honoured its representatives from all three teams last week at a special function.

Several offi cials of AGN attended the function and it was announced that this governing body will also help various of its athletes with logistical and fi nancial assistance to facilitate their participation on the international arena.

The former Olympic star, Hendrick Mokganyetsi, who acted as master of ceremonies at the function, is currently also the chairman of the Athletes Commission in Gauteng-North.

He expressed his satisfaction with the fact

that today’s athletes were being looked after much better than before.

Mokganyetsi, who is nowadays also involved at the Tshwane University of Technology’s Athletics Club, told Rekord that he and his colleagues at TUT had big plans to expand the sport at this university to great heights.

International stars such as Caster Semenya and Henrico Bruintjies had already joined TUT’s athletics team, while the young high jump sensation Christopher Moleya was also involved in the club.

All three of them are part of the South African team to compete at the Athletics World Cup in London.

Tuks’s athletics club, which yields top athletes in collaboration with the HPC, delivered most athletes to the senior team.

Sokwakhana “Soks” Zazini was one of the athletes honoured by AGN on the eve of three major international athletics events. Here he is with the president of AGN, John Mathane (left) and Corrie Fourie (right), a board member of AGN.

John Mathane, president of AGN, said it would have been diffi cult for the world not to notice that great things were happening in athletics in Pretoria.
