Social workerS embark on Strike

Social workers who are employed at NPOs in different districts

downed tools and embarked on a strike over salaries outside the Department of Social Develop-ment offices in Hoosen Haffejee Street on Monday.

These workers said they have had no pay for three months.

Phindile Funeka, who works at an old age home in Pietermaritzburg, said they had not received salaries for three months and others were given cash. “They received the money they earn as it is with no deductions and no payslips, yet we are qualified social work-

ers. We have never received an explanation of why we have not received our income for three months. No one seems to have answers yet we are working and submitting work,” said Funeka.

Funeka said they just want answers on why we did not receive salaries and also when they would get permanent posts. “We are struggling to put food on the table for our families. Other NPOs feel pity for social workers and offer what they can. It is not supposed to be like that when you working,” she said.

Department of Social Development spokesperson Mhlabunzima Memela, the

social workers are basically not employed by the department but by NPOs that get funded by the department. “The NPOs have not been paying their salaries and some of their contracts have come to an end. They came here to get clarity on certain issues which are now being addressed,” said Memela.

According to a statement issued by the Department of Social Development, the social workers are contracted by the NPOs dealing with Home Com-munity Based Care (HCBC) programmes focusing on social issues such as HIV/AIDS.

The head of the department, Nelisiwe Vilakazi, requested that she be given 14 days to deal with the concerns raised by social workers that included non-payment of their salaries for three months.“We are very concerned about the allegation regarding working conditions of the social workers. We have initiated an investigation on a variety of issues raised," said Vilakazi.

She added the social work-ers’ services were of great community importance."These social workers play a crucial role in our communities and we have an obligation to listen to their concerns and try to offer lasting solutions,” said Vilakazi.

Local health care professionals say there is no reason for stigma around contracting the Covid-19 disease and

urged city residents to unite in the fight against the pandemic by remaining positive and fol-lowing the basic health rules of wearing masks, sanitizing and social distancing.

Pietermaritzburg psychologist Perventhri Pillay said while many people are experiencing varying levels of anxiety, it is equally important to keep perspectives balanced.

“Focus on the present and on things you can control, such as healthy eating and getting enough rest. Over-thinking will cause unneces-sary stress. If you test positive, remind yourself that you can get through the illness,” Pillay advised.

Scientific research has shown that most people who test positive have either mild symp-toms or are asymptomatic. “The reality is the virus spreads without us being aware of it. Our attitude is what counts and this means following the basic rules. If there is a need to test based on government’s guidelines, there should be no fear of stigma attached to this.”

“Should you feel over-whelmed you may contact a psychologist/psychiatrist for assistance,” said Pillay.

Chairperson of Love to Live, Dr. Dan Moodley, echoed these sentiments, saying the fight against stigma was as important as the fight against the virus.

“Covid-19 is not some-thing we bring upon our-selves, and, while I do believe in privacy, a positive diagnosis is not some-thing that should neces-sarily be kept confiden-tial. If you test positive, let people around you know

so they too can follow government’s guidelines in terms of monitoring symptoms, isolating, testing where required to and, if needs be, going into quarantine,” said Dr. Moodley.

Having the support of friends, family and the community is imperative for anyone who tests positive and is in quarantine.

“People need people and we can remain in contact with loved ones through phone calls and messages. If an individual keeps their posi-tive test results to themselves for fear of being stigmatised, this will contribute to the rise in infections as those in contact will move around as normal,” explained Dr. Moodley, commend-ing ENCA news anchor Shahan Ramkisson for showing a positive attitude when he openly shared testing positive for novel coronavirus.

He added that community health clinics can provide assistance for anxiety, as well as organisations such as Lifeline, Gift of the Givers and the South African Depression and Anxiety Group. Love to Live also offers a confidential email counselling service at [email protected]

Meanwhile, at a webinar hosted by Muslims for Humanity, an initiative set up this year

by KwaZulu-Natal businessmen as a donor-led association to support NGOs

to reach the most vulnerable people, the country’s foremost epidemiolo-gist, Professor Salim Abdul Karim, emphasised the importance of wearing masks, washing hands and social distancing.

At the webinar, Karim stressed that each person must protect them-

selves to avoid a situation as seen in Italy and the United States. “If each

one of us does not take the responsibility of

protecting myself, my family and

my commu-nity, then we

will face one very serious epidem-ic,” said Karim.

As Grade 6 and 11 returned to school on Monday, the gates of some city schools

remained shut as they carried out sanitisation after either learners or teachers tested positive.

Berg Street Primary was closed after a teacher and learner tested positive for Covid-19 this week. A teacher at the school told Capital Newspapers on Monday morning the school was closed until further notice, forcing them to send learners home. He added they reported the matter to the Department of Education on Saturday.“We arrived at school at 6:30am hoping the department would be here to give us directives. Today we have an additional grade; we don’t know what to do with these children,” he said.

Voortrekker Hoerskoel also reported positive cases of Covid-19, according to a statement on their school’s Facebook page from the principal, Mr. A. Immelman. It stated there were two staff members and a matric learner who tested positive last week.“I am pleased to inform you that, so far, all the other staff mem-bers returned negative test results. To me, this also proves that staff are ad-hering to required safety measures. We intend to resume classes on Thursday,

July 9,” Immelman said.Heather Secondary School sent

out a circular to inform parents that a learner tested positive on July 5. “Kindly be informed that a learner of ours regrettably has tested positive for Covid-19. Both the Department of Health and Department of Educa-tion have been informed. In view of the above, school will be closed on July 6 and 7 to be decontaminated. We will keep you informed on further developments via the D6 app.

As a standard procedure, if your child shows any signs of illness, kind-ly seek medical assistance from your doctor or clinic,” read the circular.

Maritzburg College was also closed this week. A notice on the school’s website said the school was undergoing “deep cleaning from Monday, July 6 until Wednesday, July 8” and that no one would be allowed on campus during this time.

Department of Education Spokes-person Muzi Mahlambi said, there was no need to panic about the Covid-19 cases at schools. He said all cases are reported to the Department of Health and Department of Educa-tion. The school is then assessed and a decision is made on whether the school should be closed and decon-taminated.

UMgungundlovu Region South African Students Congress (Sasco) has recently started a

social relief programme to help students with food parcels during lockdown.

The programme targets institutions under uMgungundlovu cluster.

Sasco uMgungundlovu Regional Secre-tary Njabulo ‘Kalushi’ Ntshaba said, since some students have returned to campuses, they saw the need to start the programme as it is impossible to learn on an empty

stomach.“We understand that during the hard

lockdown, many parents were not receiv-ing income. So far, we have managed to collect a few parcels and are appealing to the public to assist us. This programme does not discriminate; it is for every stu-dent in need. Beneficiaries will be identi-fied through the Student Representative Council (SRC),” said Ntshaba.

Ntshaba said those who want to con-tribute can call him on 067 963 7575.

There will be a meeting held for the establishment of a ratepayers/residents

forum to exercise the mandate of the residents of the Northern area. Resi-dents need to speak in unison with a single voice as so far, little success has been had in engaging with the municipality on critical matters.

Beyond paid services that have become more staggered due to myriad issues, residents need safe non-hazardous living spaces. Your attendance is important as this af-fects you.

The meeting will be held on Saturday, July 18 at the Truro Plaza car park at 2pm.

With the effects of Covid-19 causing the collapse of the recycling market, a newly

founded NPO has stepped forward to con-tinue Wildlands’ recycling legacy – and has managed to save 28 jobs in the process.

At the end of June, Wildlands announced it would not continue to run its local recycling villages which, until the start of lockdown, had been a successful and well-supported operation. This was due to the drop in the recycling market. The pandemic also resulted in major funding partners, who had previously subsidised the recycling op-eration, withdrawing financial support.

Then, a new NPO, ImagineIf, founded by former Wildlands’ CEO Andrew Venter, found a way to continue the running of the recycling villages. Thanks to key partners such as Woolworths, Unilever, and DOW, ImagineIf has re-established 18 recycling jobs, as well as created another five paid jobs.

“It’s a tough time to be persevering in the recycling industry, so it was a very special moment last week when we found out we were able to save 28 jobs. This is a glim-mer of hope encouraging us to keep pushing forward,” said Venter.

Newly appointed WildTrust CEO Roelie Kloppers said he was happy to hand over Wildlands’ recycling operations to ImagineIf and is confident that the legacy is in good hands. “Recycling was something Venter started while at Wildlands, and he remains passionate about it. I am happy to hand it back over to him,” said Kloppers.

The recycling villages will continue to operate as before under the same enthusiastic staff at Hayfields Mall, Liberty Midlands Mall and Hilton Quarry Centre, seven days a week, with the exception of the Hilton recycling village, which will only be open for dumping from Monday to Friday.

While everyone is eager to make use of their local recycling facilities, few realise the amount of money these recycling villages require to keep them running. “People want to recycle, but they don’t want to have to pay to recycle. Sustainability therefore remains a huge issue, and we rely heavily on our donors,” Venter explained.

As a result, ImagineIf will not be able to continue to do collection runs free of charge. If schools or businesses would like to contin-ue the collections, they will have to cover the costs for collection. Schools or businesses that would like to get involved and continue to support local recycling efforts can contact Venter at [email protected]

As per the Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga’s

phased return of learners to the classroom, schools in the city welcomed back more learners on Monday.

Principal of Orient Heights Primary Peru Govender said learners from Grade 6 were excited to be back at school.

“We had a very successful first day. Our Grade 6 children were a little anxious, however, they adjusted very well within a few hours .I must say, our learners are excited to be back and I have a feeling they don't really understand the severity of Covid-19. We will be doing workshops with them through-out the week,” said Govender.

we can no lonGer keep Silent on GbV

As a society, we are too reactive rather than proactive. The

emphasis always seems to be on women who are dead rather than those who still live in the hands of their abusers. We need to stop protecting the identities of perpetrators.

GBV has caused so much fear in girls and women around the globe who constantly wonder about their safety, while men blame women for inciting them. There is no amount of hurt, disappointment and betrayal that could give someone the right to take the life or violate the rights of anyone.

Anyone going through this, I beg you to walk away while you still can. We’ve lost too many of our sisters at the hands of abu-sive men because they stayed in relationships hoping for change.

In all the cases where people have lost their lives, limbs and self-esteem, the signs of abuse had always been there, but were

ignored. No matter how much you love a person or how much they mean to you, that does not give them the right to walk all over you. Pain, whether it’s emo-tional or physical, is never a sign of love; a person who claims to love you will never bring you any pain.

Those who are perpetrators of violence must recognise they have a problem and seek help. Many things might have ag-gravated their abusive behaviour but there are no excuses for hurt-ing anyone. Real men love and protect women.

It is time men opened up about their pain for the sake of the future generation and to end the power struggle. I strongly believe GBV should be tackled 365 days a year and we need to be proactive in fighting for those in abusive relationships and help perpetrators so the cycle of violence ends.

We all may know someone in an abusive relationship, some-

one who is suffering in silence; let’s start there. They may have nowhere else to go; offer them a place to stay and help them heal.

Men must also reach out to other men who may be perpetra-tors or victims themselves. They may feel embarrassed, but don’t give up on them; they need you. As a society, we need to encour-age men to seek help for their anger issues, as well as for the abuse they have experienced. It is not a sign of weakness to talk about your feelings or ask for help.

As Michelle Obama once said, “There are still many causes worth sacrificing for, so much history yet to be made.” So let’s make history. Let’s stop gender-based violence.

Let go and Let God. Lu-thando #changinglives #restor-ingdestinies.

Losing Loved ones is never easyLosing Loved ones is never easySaying goodbye to a loved one is never easy which is why it is imperative to have a family funeral cover to ensure they have a dignified send-off.

WhAt iS A fAmily fuNERAl covER?

A family funeral cover is money your

family receives upon your death which will be more than enough for them to give you a dignified burial without having to pay out-

of-pocket for expenses.

it iS REASoNABlE?Many people assume funeral cover for

their families will be expensive, but the truth is, funeral cover is quite affordable. You will find that some family funeral cover options are based on your income, with premiums only increasing if you add more people to the plan. Children will incur lower premiums which will not make your monthly expenses too high, but adults will be charged adult premiums. And you will have to ask about the age of your children, as some funeral policies work in the same way as medical aids or life insurance where, at the age of 21, your children will be considered adults.

WhEN doES it PAyout? The payout for a funeral cover hap-

pens within 48 hours. This means that your family can arrange a funeral as soon as possible without having to wait to complete unnecessary paperwork or for the money to arrive. It is important to note that the rest of the policy will be paid out within six months, but the amount put aside for your funeral will arrive quickly

and in time for a dignified ceremony. This will allow your family to have closure and they will not have to worry about finding the funds to pay for a funeral, headstone and ceremony. A fast payout will make the grieving process easier as finances will be taken care of.

WhAt it cAN do foR youR fAmily?

One day, you might not be here any-more. Not only will your family have to cope with losing a loved one, they’ll also have to take care of the funeral. These days, a simple funeral can cost tens of thousands of rands. But if there is no money readily available, they will have to deal with the added stress of paying for a funeral. Will they be able to cope? Having a funeral cover will give you the peace of mind of knowing you will have money to pay for the cost of a funeral should you lose a fam-ily member that you’ve covered on your policy.

Losing Loved ones is never easyLosing Loved ones is never easy

As Covid-19 continues to spread, the future has never felt so un-predictable.

Now more than ever, our community, especially vulnerable families and individu-als, need our help. The Community Chest is, therefore, grateful to the community for responding so generously thus far to our call to “Help Us Help Others” as a result of the social lockdown because of the Co-vid-19 pandemic.

Our special thanks and appreciation this time extends to Pick n Pay (Athlone) which recently made a donation of 240 loaves of bread to our Covid-19 Bread Drive. The bread was distributed on July 1 to Inadi Pre-School located in the heart of Emafakatini Location and

Sinenhlanhla Creche in Elanskop. The year 2020 marks Community

Chest’s 60th anniversary. We intended to celebrate the occasion with festivities! Little did we expect to face a life-changing challenge such as a global pandemic. As we

begin to refocus our priorities, we realise that perhaps, doubling-down our efforts to help the most vulnerable people of our com-munity at a time such as this, could not be a better way to celebrate 60 years of service to our community. After all, being a source of hope and relief is exactly the mission of the Community Chest. Now, more than ever, we will not waiver from our vision of realising a world of “enhanced communi-ties and restored hope”. Needless to say, but this vision can only be realised with your continued support.

Pick n Pay (Athlone) challenges all their customers to support the Community Chest in their 60th year by reaching their target of 60 food hampers which is available at their store for distribution before Mandela Day.

If you wish to pledge your support to the Community Chest’s efforts, please contact Angie Narayanan on 072 791 0311 ([email protected]) or Christian Dlamini on 074 975 1275 ([email protected]).

of us face. Loss is understood as a natural part of life, but we can still be overcome by shock and confusion, leading to prolonged periods of sadness or depres-sion. The sadness typically diminishes in intensity as time passes, but grieving is an

important process in order to overcome these feelings and continue to embrace the time you had with your loved one.

Everyone reacts differently to death and employs personal coping mechanisms for grief.

Shivali Sewcharan from Pietermaritzburg Girls High getting her hands dirty taking apart the tractor engine

Six bright learners from Pieter-maritzburg Girls’ High School have decided to take on the task

of the Engen Engine Restoration Chal-lenge 2020. The learners have been given an old tractor engine from the Tractor Club at Baynesfield, in the hopes that they can repair and restore the rusty grease machine to original condition. While picking apart the engine, under the supervisory eye of

the team mentor, Josef Moffet, the team not only has a chance to get their hands dirty, but also has the opportunity to learn about basic engine mechanics. The challenge also provides the girls with a space to conduct exciting science experiments and no doubt shows the importance of encouraging girls and the youth to get excited about engineer-ing and robotics. – Ameera Allee

SeVen-year wait For a HomeSeVen-year wait For a HomeWhile most of their

neighbours at INadi, Pieter-

maritzburg, have received their government subsidy (RDP) homes, the Khumalo family have only a number scribbled on the door of their leaking mud house to show for seven years of waiting.

Bongani Khumalo (41) said he registered for an

RDP house in 2013 but years went by without any indication of when the house would be built. Instead, he was given the run-around. “In 2015, I was told my application was still being processed. When I asked one of my neighbours who worked for the housing company about this, she said my house was processed a long time ago and I should speak to the manager. The manager said he didn’t know anything and I should go to the offices,” said Khumalo.

“In 2017, I went back to check and was told to go to the Department of Human Settle-ments. When I got there I was told the very same thing; that my house was not out yet,” explained Khumalo.

In 2018, Khumalo’s neigh-bours got hold of a former manager at the Department of

Human Settlement in Durban who tried to help. He said the former manager sent someone to check if the yard was in a proper condition for a house to be built on. “The woman checked the number I was given in 2013 but could not find it. She said she would check on the situation. Towards the end of 2018, I received a call from Ward 2 Community Liaison Officer (CLO) asking if I could bring my ID and my five-year-old’s birth certificate. I did so. In March 2019, when I came back home from work, there was a new number at the door. When I called the CLO to tell him about this, he said I just had to wait for the tractor to lay the foundation. But the wait has continued,” he said.

Khumalo said in August he went to check again but was given the run-around once more. He went back in February 2020 and was told his applica-tion was declined as he did not submit his marriage certificate. “I phoned the CLO who told me to take the marriage certificate to Human Settlements and tell them I was sent by people from Vulindlela Development Associ-ation (VDA). The woman there said the VDA office should have written a letter with the certifi-

cate and there was nothing she could do,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of VDA, Bhoyo Kunene said people can make an application for RDP houses but this must be ap-proved by the Department of Human Settlements. “If VDA’s contract is coming to an end but people have not received their homes, the department can appoint another person or instruct VDA to still build the house. There are many people who applied only to find their applications were declined,” said Kunene.

Kunene said people should follow up with the department at their offices. “It is very surpris-ing to hear that a person who made an application in 2013 did not receive assistance yet access to information was available. People who register are part of the community; I wouldn’t know exactly what happened to Khumalo’s application,” he said.

Department of Human Set-tlements spokesperson Mbulelo Baloyi said he was told by VDA that Khumalo’s application was declined which is why he was given a second number. “They are still going to investigate and get back to him as I have sent his details to them,” said Baloyi.

The popular Mandela Day Marathon has been can-celled, confirmed Athletics

South Africa (ASA) President Aleck Skhosana.

Skhosana stressed that ASA, the provincial partners KwaZulu-Natal Athletics, organisers and other stake-holders involved in the popular road-running event took into consideration the health and safety of athletes, officials and spectators, as well as the government’s Covid-19 regulations.

He also said the Mandela Day Marathon won’t be the last running event that will be cancelled. “The

Covid-19 pandemic has really affect-ed the whole country at a very fast pace and we are all worried. We can’t be taking chances or risking people’s lives. We need to be careful, consult with the Department of Health and properly follow government’s regu-lations about the pandemic,” said Skhosana.

Other popular marathons in the national or international calendar officially cancelled are the Umgeni Marathon, Durban City Marathon, Two Oceans, Comrades Marathon, Soweto Marathon and City to City Marathon, to just to name a few.
