While children around the country prepare for their first dayof school, parents are digging deep into their pockets to makesure their children have everything they need for the new aca-demic year. With the rising cost of education including schooluniforms and stationery, the Phoenix Sun team took to thestreets to find out how residents are coping. Pensioner, Audrey Mdlala, has five grandchildren whoattend private schools. She believes that the standard of edu-cation, coupled with other aspects of learning, is fitting forthe high amounts forked out by parents and guardians whocan afford to send their children to private schools. “We canafford to send our children to private facilities and don’t mindpaying the price. We know that our children are getting thebest quality education and they also speak very well and theirmannerisms are impeccable,’ she said.Twenty-seven-year-old Thando Longwe has one child ingrade three who attends a private school. She shares the samesentiments as Mdlala and said, “Government schools cannotand do not provide the same quality of education as privateschools. We chose to enroll our child at a private school sothat they can excel in every learning area and the extracurric-ular activities are an added benefit to the child.”Nomasonto Dlamini’s two children are enrolled at a privatelearning facility and due to her strong belief of educationbeing the greatest gift one can give their child, she chose toopt for a private school and sacrifice financially for the futureof her children.Mother of two, Mellissia Maistry, said it is almost impossi-ble for the average income household to keep up to thedemands of government schools. “School fees at publicschools go as far as R8, 000 a year and higher. When you addthe cost of uniforms, stationery and other items which a childneeds for school, the cost is shocking. The government needsto realise that education in a child’s life is a vital componentin ensuring the success of the child, and in turn the success of

the country as the child will grow to become a contributor tothe economy,” said Maistry.Donaven Naidoo, who doesn’t have any children of his own, said he hopes government schools become more transparentwith parents as to how the school fees are spent. “A percent-age of school fees should be subsidised by the government.Parents these days are forking out large sums of money justto ensure that their children have an education. While the costof living increases drastically, the salaries of residents remainfairly unchanged and this puts a strain on parents when theyare asked for exorbitant amounts as school fees, especiallysince they also have to pay for school uniforms etc,” he said.Sylvia Naidoo feels that school fees should be abolished.“The issue of school fees is one of the main topics of discus-sion at the start of every new year. Most average incomehouseholds are struggling to cope with the demands of gov-ernment schools in terms of new or changing uniforms andother educational costs such as extracurricular activities andstationery. Education is important and it should be free,” shesaid.Sixty-seven-year-old Radha Govender said when her chil-dren were young, school fees were minimal and affordable, however, today parents are put under a lot of strain when theyare faced with the school fees issue.Sona Bala said there are a lot of people who survive on a pen-sion or grant from the state and with the increasing cost of liv-ing, it puts a lot of strain on an individual who has to fundeven one child who is enrolled at a government school. Twenty-four-year-old Kashveer Rajcoomar said he knewthe sacrifice his parents had to make to make sure he got agood education and even though he attended a governmentschool, the school fees put a strain on his parents.Radhika Rajcoomar said school fees should be given a dras-tic cut as parents all as around South Africa are not coping.

Following thepanic from elderlyresidents whoreceive social ordisability grantsafter SASSAannounced theoptional change topayment methods, the Minority Fronthas urged resi-dents to remaincalm.MF spokesman,Cllr JonathanAnnipen, said pensioners receivedletters which detail optional changeto payment methods and werealarmed. “This is a programme which isrolled out nationally by SASSA,advising clients that they have theoption to have their social or dis-ability grants deposited into theirbank accounts. I have been in dis-cussions with SASSA officials andcan confirm that pensioners mustnot become anxious over this mat-ter. This is a programme initiatedby SASSA and it does not meanthat if the change in not executedthen payments will be stopped. Iam requesting pensioners to refrainfrom believing incorrect informa-

tion that their pen-sions will be sus-pended etc. Officialshave assured me thatpayments will still beforthcoming with thetraditional SASSACard. Those pension-ers who have notreceived paymentsfor January must alsonot be alarmed,” headded. He said the issue isthat FICA documents

need to be updated thereforeclients, whose details are reflectedas incomplete on the SASSA sys-tem, may have to furnish SASSAwith documents such as proof ofaddress, ID of spouses and evenbank statements. “Once these documents arereceived the payments will bereleased. However, this appliesonly to people who did not receivetheir payments in January 2018 andnot those who have received lettersinforming them of optionalchanges for payments,’ he added. For more information and clarity, contact the Minority Front officeon 031-500-7580 or 031-404-2743.

Phoenix police are warning residents about acurrent scam being used by criminals, whopromise victims of carjacking cases to get backtheir vehicles, provided that they pay a certainamount. It is alleged that the complainants who havereported their vehicles stolen have been contact-ed by a person pretending to be the investigatingofficer. The investigating officer apparently tellsthe complainant that their vehicle has beenrecovered in another area and in order for themto receive their vehicles, they need to pay anamount into an e-wallet account. The complainant, desperate to receive their vehi-cle back, will make the payment and thereaftercontact the investigating officer asking for theirvehicles. The station's communications officer, CptLouise Naidoo, said this is a scam. "If a stolenvehicle is found in any area, the investigatingofficer will not ask for a fee to be paid as thiswill amount to corruption. If a complainant'svehicle is recovered, the vehicle will be handedover to the complainant without any fee to bepaid. Do not fall prey to this scam. Contact theinvestigating officer before making any pay-ments. In the four cases that have been broughtto the attention of the investigating officers, thecomplainant's have been advised to registerfraud cases," she said.

Replacing the previous six-speed automaticgearbox, a new eight-speed automatic sends theamount of twist to all four wheels with final per-formance figures yet to be revealed.Coinciding with the launch of the ST, Ford hasalso introduced a raft of new driver assistancesystems to the Edge range, made up of Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection,
