The mass invasion started on March 28 and has seen more than 100 families claim houses they feel are rightfully theirs. My family now has a roof over their heads. We are happy to stay here and we are not going any- where,” an elderly man who moved his family into the Shalimar Ridge Housing Project told HERAUT. The housing project in question has been a white elephant of note for both Lesedi Local Municipal- ity and the Department of Hous- ing. The project started with a bang 14 years ago and promised to pro- vide a low cost housing solution to nearly a thousand residents. What has now become a mass shelter for the homeless has to date cost ratepayers more than R50- million. In 2017 an application for additional funds to the tune of R13-million was made in order for the project to be completed. Whet- her this request by the provincial government to the national treasu- ry was approved remains unclear. One certainty is that the cost of providing security to the project at one stage ran at more than R70 000 per month and yet through the years all valuable items like stoves, coper pipes, steel fittings and even geysers had been stolen. Responding to this latest devel- opment the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the Sedibeng re- gion welcomed the appropriation of the houses with “salutations” to the communities of Ratanda and Shalimar Ridge. “The issue of housing in Lesedi has always been a thorn in the side of the community as they saw how these newly built houses were de- teriorating while little or no action was taken to remedy the situa- tion,” EFF regional chairperson Isaac Khithika said in a statement. “It comes as no surprise that the community took it upon them- selves to acquire housing as there are people who have been on a wait- ing list for decades.” The Democratic Alliance’s coun- cillor for Shalimar Ridge and sur- rounds, Mirna Mulder, confirmed that a court interdict is being sought by government to remove all illegal dwellers. “It is tragic that even though this situation was brought under the attention of both the provin- cial and national legislature, no action was taken to prevent what can be viewed as an inevitable in- vasion. Millions of rands have been wasted over the years and ulti- mately the people who desperately need the houses are the ones who will continue to suffer.” LLM was asked to comment on the matter, but HERAUT has not received a response. In the meantime, the self-pro- claimed owners of the houses have started to bring their furniture to what used to be a ghost town and interior decorating is in full swing. There have been a number of house warming parties at the 144 units that make up the 12 blocks of flats at the Shalimar Ridge Hous- ing Project and all indications are that all the inhabitants will not leave the premises without a fight. Cheers! It was celebrations all around as members of the community decided that they would take matters into their own hands by occupying houses at the Shalimar Ridge Housing Project which was supposed to have been completed many years ago.

Security guard shot, hijackedNIGEL - In yet another event that shook the com-munity of MacKenzieville, a security guard sur-vived after he was shot at and hijacked.

The community has also been subjected toscenes of violence in recent weeks after residentsdestroyed crucial infrastructure as they werewaiting for government to provide low cost housing.

On March 25 Simon Mpondwana of Monitor24 Security was sitting at his checkpoint in GandhiRoad when he observed three suspects in thedistance.

While having a cigarette at approximately 23:45,Mpondwana narrowly escaped death when thesuspects opened fire at his patrol car. The bulletsshattered his window and Mpondwana was struckin the upper right arm. Fortunately the bullet missedhis vital organs.

The gunmen then stormed towards the vehicleand demanded that Mpondwana hand over hisfirearm.

According to Deon Pretorius, owner of Monitor24, Mpondwana was issued with both a lethal andnon-lethal firearm and that the suspects neverdiscovered the real McCoy.

After grabbing the non-lethal weapon, thesuspects jerked Mpondwana out of his patrol carand beat him. He sustained serious head injuries. They then forced him back into the car and droveoff with him to Snake Park in Alrapark where theyrobbed him of his personal belongings.

The gunmen took his cash, cellphone and bulletproof vest. What the suspects did not know is thatthe car was issued with a dash-camera which wasconnected to the Monitor 24 control room via GPS.

Video footage of the incident can be viewed onHeraut’s website.

The company was quick to react, but by thetime they reached the secluded township location, the gunmen had already fled the scene.

“The lethal weapon which was in Mpondwana’spossession was fortunately never discovered bythe perpetrators,” Pretorius confirmed.

Nigel SAPS Station Commander, ColonelSenzagakhona Mohale confirmed the incident and

that a case of attempted murder is being investigated.Mpondwana was rushed to Life Suikerbosrand

Hospital in Heidelberg and was released later thatday.

Simon Mpondwana of Monitor 24 Security (right) is lucky to be alive after he was shot at and later hijacked by the three men other men inthis photograph. The suspects are still at large and the community is urged to phone their local police station if they recognise any of themen.

Residents get down and dirty to clean up Jameson ParkHEIDELBERG - Residents of Jameson Park onMarch 23 participated in a successful clean upoperation.

It was the third time in recent years that thecommunity decided they would do their part tomake the area more appealing. One of the biggestconcerns in the area is illegal dumping. Recentlyelected committee members Tinini Mokotong, Thla-ko Phukule and Retha Vogel du Plessis insisted thatthey would inspire fellow residents to get involved.

According to Du Plessis the three hour clean-up action was a huge success thanks to the assis-tance they received from workers of Jameson ParkClinic who helped to organise the drive. Du Plessissaid that these staff members go the extra mile toassist the community wherever they can.

The volunteers expressed their thanks towardsLesedi Local Municipality for supplying a wastetruck to pick up the bags collected on the day.

“Together we can make a difference and wewould like to to appeal to all residents of JamesonPark not to dump household refuse bags and theirbuilding rubble alongside the road,” said Du Plessis.

The Jameson Park community held a success-ful clean up drive. Open stands and hot spotareas were tackled and loads of householdrefuse and building rubble were cleared.

Car safety tips for parentsMany people go about their regular driving activityon auto-pilot without much awareness or conside-ration for what is going on around them. If youhave children in the car, it’s imperative that you donot become complacent and that you are moreaware of the safety hazards around you. Par-ticularly since hijackers and other criminals are be-coming brazen and wherever the opportunity pre-sents itself are taking advantage of unsuspectingindividuals. A criminal act can happen anywhereand at any time. Here are some precautions foryou to keep in mind that will help to keep you andyour loved ones safe.

Be preparedLike life insurance and funeral policies, we don’twant to think about negative circumstances, but itis necessary for you to know what to do in theevent of a hijacking, particularly if you have childrenwith you. Vacating the driver’s seat while the chil-dren are still buckled in at the back leaves too greatan opportunity for the hijacker to move into theseat and drive away before your children are safelyout. Therefore, a young child’s car seat should bepositioned so that the driver can easily reach backand unbuckle the child, then lift the child to thefront and exit the car together.

If, for whatever reason, you are unable to un-buckle your child from the seat while you’re stillin the car, try to take the key with you as a “bar-gaining tool” when you exit. Let the hijackers knowthat you are going to get your child out of the carseat and the vehicle. Cautiously climb out of thecar and move to the back door directly behind thedriver’s door. Place one foot firmly in the car onthe floor behind the driver’s seat and lean into thecar while you unbuckle your child. This way, if thehijacker drives off you will be thrown into the carwith your child.

Plan aheadKnow what you are going to do in the event ofbeing hijacked and discuss it with your children ifthey are old enough to understand. Teach olderchildren how to undo their safety belts, climb tothe front of the car, then get out of the car with youand move to safety. They can also be taught howto help younger children, and to hold onto youwhile you all exit the car at once.

Be safeEnsure you are aware of your surroundings at alltimes, whether driving or walking to and from your

car. In public spaces, put your mobile phone awayand be present with your children so that you don’tget pinpointed as an easy target.

You can become easily distracted when enteringor leaving your car, particularly when buckling ababy into a car seat. Attackers are relying on youbeing distracted and vulnerable, so make it clear toyour children that this is not a time to mess around.

Always park your car in a well-lit, properlysecured parking area, ideally with security guardson duty. Have your keys ready and don’t talk onyour mobile phone while walking to your car. Tryto walk to and from your car with another person. If you are out shopping or running errands alone, consider walking near other shoppers in the parkinglot or have a security guard accompany you.

Easy accessIt is always better to have an electric gate at home, but if you have to get out of the car to manuallyopen the gate, take the key with you if the childrenare in the car. Once again, this is so that you have a“bargaining tool”. If your children are older, ratherhave them exit the car with you when opening thegate so that you are all separate from the car shoulda crime occur. Once you drive into your property, stop just inside the gate to make sure that it closessecurely before you park. Then, take the childrenout of the car to safety, before carrying in the shop-ping.

A helping handThese days a vehicle tracking service can offer muchmore than only stolen vehicle recovery. There aremany different types of vehicle tracking devicesand added services available to the market that offergreater care and protection for the families that in-vest in them. Premium services can monitor yourcar and send you notifications on standard riskevents like when you are entering high-risk areas. With more inclusive services, as the driver you areable to share your journey with a friend or lovedone ensuring that they know where you are andthat you are safe. Today’s tracking services are anideal solution for motorists looking to ensure theirpersonal safety and protect their car. “Althoughnobody wants to think about it, it’s important toadequately prepare yourself and have a plan in caseof an emergency,” says Ron Knott-Craig, ExecutiveOperational Services at Tracker. “Criminals aremost likely to strike when you least expect it, soremain vigilant at all times and stay safe.”

Wheel Well educates parentson road safety for childrenJarryd du [email protected]

HEIDELBERG - The Wheel Well non-profit orga-nisation held an awareness campaign at HeidelbergMall on March 16 where they donated child carseats to families.

Managing director of Wheel Well, Peggie Mars, looks after children as passengers in vehicles byoffering education on the proper installation anduse of child car seats. She said that the public andvarious organizations donate towards the campaignand that donations of car seats are later made tofamilies. Mars says children are vulnerable in ve-hicle collisions as seat belts only protect adults. She said accidents can cause serious internal injuriesto children and the correct choice of a child seat isbased on the age and weight of the child. The in-stallation of child car seats differs from infants totoddlers.

Infant seats have a flat angle that is designed toprotect a newborn’s spine and neck during col-lisions and are designed to be more mobile to enableparents to carry their baby. These seats can doubleup as rockers says Mars. Infant seats should be

installed facing the back of the vehicle and areclassed as group 0 or 0+ babies from birth to 13kg.

Toddler seats are designed for a more uprightsit so that children have more visual ability. Theseseats are permanent installations and face forward.Seats are classed in group 1 for toddlers from agefour, weighing no more than 18kg. Mars also saidthe booster seat is adjustable to the growth of chil-dren as the seats are able to rise. The shoulder beltmust pass over the middle of a child’s shoulder, away from the neck and across the chest while thelap belt must go over the lap and hips and neveracross the tummy and is group two and three fromages four weighing up to 18kg. Red markingsindicate where to secure the toddler seat while infantseats have blue markings and as Mars describes, blue is for babies while red is for rascals.

During the morning a donation of R200 or morewas enough to receive a child car seat. Accordingto Wheel Well the child death toll decreased by24% from 2012. Over 8 000 children have beenput into car safety seats through the campaignwhich is based in Strydompark, Randburg. Formore information phone Mars on 072 385 7121 oremail [email protected].

Theresa Erasmus of Wheel Well donated a child safety seat to Fay Myers and Penny McLeanat Heidelberg Mall as part of the company’s awareness campaign.

Dié boek is nou be-skikbaar by die uitge-wer. Besoekwww.kraaluitgewers.co.zavir meer inligting.
