Meadowlands Technical High School,a source of hope for technical-orien-tated pupils, is on the brink of closingits doors unless a large capital injectionis made into the school’s coffers.Grappling with the high costs andmaintenance, the Montford school is indeep waters and the school’s manage-ment believe that if they do not act fast, the school funds would dry up and thedoors to the decorated 49-year-old in-stitiution will soon close. The technical school which caters foran average enrollment of 845 pupils, ranging from grade eight to 12, pro-vides holistic education for childrenfrom disadvantaged communities suchas KwaNdengezi, Umlazi, Welbedacht,
Demat, Mariannridge and Chatsworth.Pupils from these various communitieshave the opportunity to explore thevarious technical subjects offered atthe school. Welding, metalworking andplumbing are only a few of the manysubjects that pupils are offered. In an interview with the Rising SunCommunity Newspapers, a despondentprincipal, Mr SV Naidoo shared hischallenges he has endured over the fewmonths. “We are struggling to makeends meet with the resources that areprovided by government. One of ourmajor problems are school fees withonly 28 percent of registered pupilspaying their full amounts. If we do notgenerate enough funds, then we will
have no alternative to close the facilitythat provides a solid foundation and
education for our children.”Naidoo claims that in his challenging18 months, he has made numerouschanges to the benefit of the schooland its pupils. He added, “The school has tried nu-merous fundraising efforts but it is justnot enough. While tackling the manychallenges in the last 12 months withregards to maintenance, it has becomealmost impossible to cope with theminimum school fees collected. Theschool has tried fund-raising initiativesbut it is just not enough.”“We hope to bring Meadowlands backto its former glory and an institutionthat is self-funded by well-wishers andone that will ensure that future pupils
get the very best that we can give them.We lack the ability to fulfil our purposeas a school due to the lack of resources, the scarce feedback from the depart-ment, and the lack of co-operationfrom parents. We are urgently seekingthe assistance of businesses and thepublic to come on board,” he said. Theprincipal has vowed to do all in hispower to keep the doors of the schoolopen.Following the threat of the school clos-ing its doors, the management of theschool will be holding a dinner anddance fundraising initiative at theHavenside Function Venue on June 30,at 6pm.

“Previously, the kitchen belonged to the ladyof the house and today, ours has been takenover. We are very proud of our son and all ofhis achievements thus far. We are also proudthat he is living out his dream as a professionalchef.”Rakmatullah claimed that his passion for theculinary world also stemmed from the adren-alin-filled rush that comes from an organisedand a chaotic kitchen environment. Can social media be considered as a social ill? Letisha Gounden and Khanyisile Mgangana
Social media refers to the means of interactionsamong people in which they create, share, and ex-change information as well as ideas in virtualcommunities and networks. It is therefore be-coming the fastest medium in the world. The Ris-ing Sun took to the streets to find out just howaddicted we are to social media and how we cango about to change this?
Crystal Govender (18) of Umhlatuzana said,“I’m not a fan of social media. I have WhatsAppto just stay in contact with everyone. I would saysocial media can be referred to as a social ill de-pending on a person. It can be compared to drugsfor example because some people are addicted toit. People need to make a change on their own.”
Deshnee Govender (21), who is a lab technicianfrom Montford said, “In my opinion, social mediais not a social ill. It does have its advantages anddisadvantages, but it is also dependent on the typeof person you are. In my lifestyle, I don’t havethe time to be on social media 24 hours a day, seven days a week. I would say I’m not addictedand I can stay without going on social media. Iwould therefore state that it isn’t a need but moreof a want.”
Westcliff resident, Treshen Pillay (22) said thathe mostly uses WhatsApp and Facebook morethan any other social media platforms. “I disagreethat social media is a social ill. I feel that with re-gards to children, parents should give them cellu-lar phones at the right age to use and limit theirusage. There should definitely be restrictions.Personally, I am a fan of Facebook and I use it tokeep in touch with the rest of the world however,
I also know how to restrict myself. People havethe control to limit themselves and data also con-tributes to this limitation,” he added.
Staff associate, Sphamandla Dlamini (20) ofWoodhurst said, “Being addicted to social mediaisn’t actually the right term as I feel that peoplecan use it to their heart’s content but need to bal-
ance their lives to accommodate all other aspectssuch as work, prayer and family time. Parentsshould restrict or limit their young children fromsocial media so that they grow up focusing onthings that would get them to where they want tobe in life like getting an education. A good bal-ance of social media life and real life is needed inorder to defeat the addiction.”
Cashier, Khayelihle Majamane (20) said, “So-cial media is a social ill because it has a negativeeffect in one’s life if they get addicted to it andare unable to fight the addiction. Social mediacan expose you to issues such as cyberbullyingwhich can certainly impact your life negatively.”

Many assume they are in love whereas it may justbe an infatuation, a one-sided feeling, or justclose friendship. When one acts on these roman-tic and sexual emotions impulsively and withoutaccording it sufficient time, it may lead to disap-pointment and broken hearts.True love includes respect, admiration, care, andnever subjecting your partner to hurt, humiliationor any form of abuse.True love may be the kind of love that manychase after or desire, but is as elusive as a butter-fly. It takes time to bloom. Many find it and arerewarded with happiness. The following are some of the signs of true lovein a perfect romance (Ref. E. Arthur-“12 Signs ofTrue Love in a Relationship”):• Give and take in love. You give to the relation-ship unconditionally without expecting some-thing back from your partner.• Pure happiness. You are filled with happinessjust watching your special person smile or laughout loud even though you are having a bad day.• Pain and anger. You may feel hurt when yourlover upsets you, but their actions never angeryou. You cannot remain annoyed with them forlong because it hurts you more.
• You make sacrifices for their happiness or well-being even if they may not realise it.• The right effort. You go to great lengths to makeefforts to improve the relationship and try toplease your partner and make them feel loved andspecial.• You can’t hurt them. When you are truly in lovewith someone, you cannot hurt them in any way.• You keep your promises. When you make apromise to this person, you keep it even thoughthis person does not know that you broke it.• When you truly love your partner, you see themas part of your life and your future.• You share their burdens. You are always willingto help in their difficulties even though you haveproblems of your own.• Pride and jealousy. You feel proud when theyachieve something even though you may havefailed at it. When you love someone, you cannotbe jealous.• You are willing to suffer, just to see them happy.• Their perspective. Whenever you have plans ofyour own, think of your partner’s opinion beforedoing something for yourself. So are you in love, or are you getting there?

Senior citizens are the gemsof our community
As we look around, there are so much ofpollution and filth and our creatorwants us to take good care. Let ustake on the responsibility and do ourpart. There is so much to do and solittle done. We all could lean fromthe stars, the moon and the sun asthey work together as one.Let’s be more careful by help-ing Mother Earth regain itssplendor and keep it cleanand ever beautiful. As it is
often said that cleanliness is next to Godli-ness.
Duty calls, let us pray and clean up themess. We ought to be grateful to God for
the land of our birth. The animals, the birds, the butterflies, trees and flowers too. All of
us can rejoice together as we help tomake a new one.

International Day against Drug Abuse and IllicitTrafficking was commemorated, recently. To thisday, drug abuse remains a major concern in ourcommunity. As often as we may commemoratethese important days, it is of no purpose withoutan act of prevention. An addiction is difficult tostop and therefore, it is important that one grad-ually stops smoking, drinking or any other formof addiction. As the saying goes, ‘You can take ahorse to the lake but you cannot force the horseto drink the water.' This means that as much as

In recent months, there have been several casesin which youngsters from Chatsworth have beenreported missing. While we do sympathise withthe families and the victims, majority of thesecases end in the person running away from homedue to family issues. The news about these miss-ing people becomes viral on social media whichcauses a complete community disturbance. Fam-ily issues should be kept at home. This is not onlya community problem but it is also an issue withregards to the misuse of police resources. I ap-peal to the residents to think about their actionsbefore placing such news in the public domain.

The elusive sardines are back. I can smell andeven taste these mouth-watering little delicaciessmeared with masala frying in kitchens acrossDurban. For a few years, they avoided our shores and wewondered what could be the reason. The Chinesewere our prime suspects and many believed ourgovernment was complicit in a serious crimeagainst marine conservation in allowing Chinesetrawlers to destroy our seas to feed the 1,2 billionhungry mouths in China. At least, for now, the sardines are here and notgone to China. The sardines are a sought- afterdelicacy in India, Portugal, Spain and, of course, the KwaZulu-Natal coast. In India, from wherewe have inherited our love for sardines, the fishis on the decline. Co-incidentally, the sardinesarrived on our shores the day I was watching aprogramme on the colourful Sardine Festival inLisbon. And I wondered why we did not have asimilar festival since the sardines have beencoming to our shores for decades, if not for cen-turies. While we enjoy this bounty from the sea,we must respect and care for our rivers and seas.We must stop throwing plastics that get washedinto rivers which then end up in the sea. Theworld’s oceans are choking with plastics. Howuncaring could we be? But not everyone is alover of the little silvery, slippery sardine.Women generally don’t like them as they haveto clean the smelly fish and fry them for theirlazy husbands to enjoy with their friends. Thewhole house smells of sardines. What is betteron a cold, wintry evening than hot, crispy sar-dines for a bite? Cheers to the sardines!

I congratulate the Havenside Senior Citizens Clubwho celebrated their 33 year milestone anniversary, recently. What a momentous achievement! To seethese beautiful ladies in their traditional saris, itmakes me feel proud that we are upholding our strongculture. To the executive members, well done forkeeping your doors and hearts open to the seniors inthe community of Havenside. Sadly, our elders are nolonger regarded as the gems of our society. Some-times, the elderly are dumped in a home for the aged. They are not even visited by their children. Senior cit-izens deserve to grow gracefully old and live in secu-rity for their reminder of their last years. My appeal toall the young people in our community is for them todo the moral thing look after your parents. Your par-ents and elders should be like God to you. They are
the most precious things in your life. Without them, there is no you. I pray that the Havenside Senior Cit-izens Club continues to grow from strength tostrength. A special thank you must go the editorialteam at the Rising Sun for not forgetting our eldersand so willingly and generously always publishingthe highlights and celebrations of senior citizens andtheir clubs. God bless you all for your kindness. I lovethe saying, ‘The most useful asset of a person is not ahead full of knowledge but a heart full of love, withears open to listen, and hand willing to help an elder.’God bless the elders.

Mr and Mrs Moodley in their younger days. The couple recently celebrated their 60th anniver-sary.
Diamond anniversarycelebrations for
Chatsworth coupleTrue love stories never end and these profoundwords certainly hold true for Chatsworth cou-ple, Mike and Priscilla Moodley, who recentlycelebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. De-spite having an arranged marriage, the pairsaid that when they first met, it was definitelylove at first sight. They tied the knot in 1957 atbeautiful Christian wedding ceremony. Theywere later blessed with five children, ninegrandchildren and four great grandchildren.Mr Moodley, who is very much in love withhis wife to this day said, “My wife’s cousin, who had worked with me, arranged our meet-ing. The moment I saw her, I instantly fell inlove as she was gorgeous and we began court-ing. Two years later, we tied the knot at ourSilverglen home. I thank God every day forbringing my beautiful wife into my life.”They attribute their successful long marriageto their love for God, each other and theirfriends and family. Their advice for newlywedded couples is to have faith in each otherand always trust their love.“Prayer is the key to having a successful mar-riage and it is essential to always put your re-lationship first,” added the Moodley’s. In theirspare time, the duo enjoys watching moviestogether and spending time with their familyand friends.
Happiness, love, trust and friendship are the secret toPaul and Savy Naiken’s successful marriage. The Bel-lair couple recently celebrated 55 years of marital blissand shared with journalists their happy journey as hus-band and wife. They celebrated their milestone an-niversary in grand style with their close friends at theRainbow Seniors Club. The Naiken’s were married onJune 10, 1962.Two years before their marriage, the pair was intro-duced to each other on Christmas by their parents andsoon became good friends. Their friendship later blos-somed into love when they began courting. They tiedthe knot at a lovely Tamil wedding ceremony, whichwas held at the Clairwood Temple Hall. Mrs Naiken re-
called their wedding day fondly and said that it was thehappiest day of her life. “We are still in love to this dayand I am blessed,” said the 79-year-old. Mr Naiken (89)and his wife’s bond have been strengthened by theirtwo children and six grandchildren, whom they lovedearly. “We love spending time with them,” they said. The pair are also avid travellers and have been to sev-eral countries around the world. In their spare time, they enjoy going to the senior citizens club, socialisingwith their friends, watching movies and travelling. They concluded, “It is very important for newly mar-ried couples to love each other and always trust eachother. Friendship is the key to a happy marriage.”

It is said, ‘You give but little whenyou give of your possessions, it iswhen you give off yourself, you trulygive.’ These poignant words hold truefor community leader, distinguishededucationists and disciplinarian, whowas a true champion of the people andthe institutions he served. Executed his task with sincerity, dili-gence and without wanting any praiseand fanfare, Dalip Singh’s unwaver-ing commitment and passion to servehis people earned him a place in thehigh echelons of society. Guided by truth, righteousness andhigh spiritual conduct, Singh had leftan indelible mark in the lives of not only his im-mediate family but his community which heserved for more than four decades. Described as the salt of the earth, Singh’s suddendemise on June 28, 2016 had left a huge void inthe lives of his family, friends and community, areal gift from God to his family, a kindred soulwho lovingly touched the lives of those he cameinto contact with. His family were truly blessed to have had Singhas a member of their family - as a loving husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother andbrother-in-law. He also left behind a host offriends and colleagues with whom he shared adeep and lasting bond. His whole life was dedi-cated to serving humanity. He was born in Mayville on May 16, 1937. Singhattended Candella Boys’ School and completedhis high school career at Sastri College. Whilestudying for his BA Degree and as a young 18year-old, he chose to offer his voluntary service towork during his free time for FOSA, a charitableorganisation assisting the sick and the needy. Singh married on January 5, 1964 and while onthis incredible journey of marriage and havingthree children, he joined the Department (IndianAffairs) in 1968. It was this passion that he hadfor assisting people that prompted him to pursuehis studies in the field of social work and receivedhis Honours Degree in Social Science.Later in life, Singh followed his natural inclina-tion to render divine service as the principal of theAryan Benevolent Home in Chatsworth from1979 to 1982. Having served the ABH with dis-tinction, Singh re-joined the Department of Edu-cation where he taught in schools in Chatsworth.During his teaching years, he completed his B EdPsychology degree and was appointed to a spe-cialist position with the KZN Education Depart-ment and was one of few individuals qualified asboth, a social worker and teacher. His calm de-meanour and expert knowledge of educational is-sues, resulted in the Department of Educationappointed him to the Teacher Welfare Board. Hewas appointed to head of Psychological Servicesand retired in 2002.After retirement, he offered his services toDAFTA, APD and Cheshire Homes inChatsworth. His family said, “Our father was the pivotal cen-tre of our lives. His quiet but imposing presencewithin the family became the fountain from whichwe drew our inspiration to succeed in life; thecompass, which guided us to lead honest, simplelives.” Deeply spiritual and warmly generous, he

fulfilled his destiny in life as God’s chosen one to healwhenever he could, to build whenever the opportunityarose; to uplift those who were desperate and unfortu-nate. We may not have our father physically with us,but the memories he has left behind continues to sustainand enrich our lives. His legacy of how to live in har-mony and peace with each other will forever fill us withpride. Added to that legacy must be our late realisationthat the mind can overcome any obstacle or burden. Inthe last few years when his health began to deteriorate, the pain he endured so stoically bore testimony to hisimmense mental courage and strength.” Singh made thestatement emphatically that the body is secondary tothe mind. Fishermen from throughout Durban gathered forthe launch of two books at the Durban Beach, re-cently. The book launches were highly success-ful. The books, Fishing Mentoring TrainingManuel and Let Them Eat Fish were written byVanessa Burgher in collaboration with the KZNSubsistence Fisherfolk and the South DurbanCommunity Environmental Alliance. They weredistributed as part of the ‘fish not oil’ campaign.SDCEA project officer, Chadley Joseph ex-plained that the books will provide important in-formation regarding their rights as fishermen, their responsibilities to stand up for their rightswhen they are infringed on and housekeeping toensure they know to keep their fishing areas cleanand to practice good fishing habits.“The launch was also used as a platform to in-form the fishermen of harmful developments thatare being proposed by government and develop-
ers alike. Some of which are the proposal of a de-salination plant in the Bluff community done byHitachi Technologies, proposed sand winning ofthe ocean sea bed by Transnet, proposed 2D and3D seismic testing in our oceans by PGS and amarine spatial planning bill proposed by govern-ment. All of these proposed developments willhave a drastic effect on the subsistence fishermenof Durban who eke a livelihood from our Indianocean,” said Joseph.Member of the Seine Netters, Morgan Govenderstressed the need for all fishermen to be unitedunder the KZN fisherfolk banner to fight for theirright to access both the harbour and the ocean. The occasion was to bring attention of the plightof the Durban poor fisherfolk and how they werebeing oppressed and discriminated against byTransnet, port security and the police as well asthe eThekwini Municipality.

Peugeot has confirmed its re-entry to evergrowing double cab pick-up marketwith the simply titled Pick-Up aimed at
North and West African markets.Essentially a rebadged version of the Chinesemarket DongFeng Rich, itself a reworked D22generation Nissan Navara currently sold in SouthAfrica as the NP300, the Pick-Up comes poweredby a 2.5-litre turbodiesel engine developing 85kW / 280 Nm of torque, mated to a five-speedmanual gearbox, and sees the French marque's re-turn to be pick-up segment since the South Amer-ican only 207 derived Hogger ended productionthree years ago.
Differing only from its Chinese sibling by virtueof a different grille, revised front and rear lightsand bold Peugeot lettering on the tailgate in thesame mould as legendary 404 and 504, the Pick-Up will also be offered with a choice of rear-or-four wheel drive, the latter complete with low
range, and sport a payload of 815 kilograms withground clearance rated between 210 mm and 215mm.Production will commence in September al-though it is unlikely that the Pick-Up will makeits way to South Africa anytime soon.

Following a 25 cents a litre drop in theprice of petrol for June, the Automo-bile Association (AA) has predicated
an even larger dive in the price of all gradesof fuel for July.Commenting on unaudited data released by theCentral Energy Fund on Tuesday, the AA saidit expects the price of petrol to go down by be-tween 60 and 64 cents a litre, diesel by 60 centsand illuminated paraffin by 57 cents comeWednesday July 5th."The rand remained mostly stable against theUS dollar in the first half of June, with strengthin the currency contributing three cents a litreto the drop. The big move was from oil, whichshrugged off OPEC’s production quotas todrop by around eight percent since the start ofthe month," the Association said in a statement. It however warned that an increase could be onthe cards if the Rand denominated debt isdowngraded to junk status by the three majorratings agencies."That could trigger substantial capital outflow, almost certainly leading to Rand weaknesswhich will be heavily negative for the fuelprice. Barring unexpected political or eco-nomic shocks in the lead-up to the next ratingsreviews, we expect fuel price movements tomainly depend on international petroleumprices," it said.
Substantial fuelprice drop
predicted for July

Justin JacobsFerrari is one of the world’s most renowned carbrands. It has a long history in motorsport and hasbeen at the forefront of supercar design and per-formance for as long as anyone can rememberAsk just about anybody and they will all knowthe name Ferrari. So when the Prancing Horselaunches a new car, it’s kind of a big deal. A fewyears ago, Ferrari introduced the world to the FF.Offering space for four, it looked odd thanks toits two-door shooting brake styling. Much toeveryone’s surprise, the FF sold quite well. Nowthough, Ferrari has improved the formula and thename. The new car is now called the GTC4 Lussoand features a host of improvements. What is it? To be honest, I’m not quite sure. It’s not a lightweight supercar like some of the other cars in theFerrari stable. It’s more of a GT car, designed toeat up the miles. You see, unlike every other carbrand within this segment, Ferrari refuses to buildan SUV. Instead, they have given us the GTC4Lusso, the former designation standing for GrandTourer Car, I think, the 4 referring to its uniquefour-wheel drive system, and Lusso denoting lux-ury in Italian. The looksAs mentioned, one of the biggest issues with theFF was the fact that it didn't resemble a Ferrari inthe traditional sense. While certainly not ugly, italso failed to turn heads like the 458 or its 488GTB replacement. This new car on the other handhas managed to change this to a certain degree. As a result of new aerodynamic enhancements,as well as some improvements to the front and
rear, the GTC4 Lusso exudes elegance and ex-clusivity, underscoring its dynamic traits from asporty GT perspective. What about the cabin?Inside, you can expect a lot of leather and realmetal door handles. As with many high perform-ance cars these days, door handles seem to be anoptional extra in order to save weight. However, that’s not what the GTC4 Lusso is all about. It’sa luxury tourer. This means that Ferrari don’t haveto worry about cutting back on luxury things suchas double layered side windows or extra insula-tion to reduce road noise. They have even fitted a massive infotainmentscreen which looks really good. The car also fea-tures a new steering wheel design and even thepassenger gets a little screen to view performance
data and multimedia information. Those at the rearmight find space to be a bit tight, however, Ferrariis adamant that the GTC4 Lusso will seat fouradults in comfort. It also has alarge boot which makes it themost practical Ferrari availabletoday.Let's talk power!Well, the GTC4 Lusso has a lotof power; 507kW/697Nm to beexact. This massive figure iscourtesy of a naturally aspirated6.3-litre V12, which also allowsit to sprint from 0-100 km/h in3.4 seconds and on to a top speedof 335 km/h. As mentioned ear-lier, the GTC4 Lusso retains the
FF’s four-wheel drive system, but being a Ferrari, the setup is not as straightforward as it sounds. In order to get the proportions right, the car fea-tures two gearboxes; one at the back for the rearwheels and a small one up front for the frontwheels. The only problem is that the one up frontis a two speed, which means that after fourth gear, the car is no longer four-wheel drive.Technically then, the GTC4 Lusso offers the bestof both worlds; it has massive amounts of grip offthe line and once up to speed, it becomes a rear-wheel-drive dream. Ferrari has also fitted the carwith rear wheel steering as part of its 4RM Evosystem. What's the verdict? As far as thrills go, the GTC4 Lusso definitely de-livers both in design as well as performance, andaccording to the technical updates, it should beone incredible drive.Price R6 200 000

Mitsubishi Motors South Africa hasannounced that its new EclipseCross compact SUV would make its
local debut sometime next year.Shown at the Geneva Motor Show earlier thisyear and expected to rival the likes of the ToyotaC-HR, Renault Captur, Opel Mokka X and Nis-san Juke, the Cross revives the much lovedEclipse name last used in 2011 on the Galant-based sports coupe, with styling borrowed heav-ily from the XR-PHEV shown at the Swissshowpiece in 2015.
In addition to its looks, the Eclipse Cross also fea-tures a development of the Super All-Wheel-Drive system and Active Yaw Control derivedfrom the equally iconic Lancer Evolution, withpower expected to come from a 1.5-litre turbopetrol engine mated to a CVT, or a 2.2 DI-D tur-bodiesel connect to a eight-speed automatic. At the same time, the Tokyo based automaker, which is celebration its centenary in 2017, alsoconfirmed that the new Pajero Sport will make itslong awaited premiere later this year, with "a hostof new and improved models" also on the cards.

For many people, the holiday excitementstarts months before they hit the road.Planning accommodation, routes and
stopovers is part of the fun, but everything cancome crashing to a halt if you’ve missed a cru-cial bit of paperwork, such as a border letter."The upcoming June/July school holidays are oneof the longest holiday periods of the year, whichis a perfect time for South Africans to hit the roadand explore the country,” says Rudolf Mahoney,Head of Brand and Communications at WesBank.“No matter how much you’ve planned your roadtrip and accommodation, your holiday can be ru-ined if you’ve forgotten important admin thathelps you comply with the law and your vehiclefinance contract.”Driving across the border is not as simple as hav-ing a valid passport and driver’s licence. Sincelast year, the South African government has beenactively enforcing laws that require motorists topresent extensive documentation when leavingthe country. These laws apply to all vehicles –those that are financed and those that are paid off
– and are designed to crack down on stolen vehi-cles being taken out of the country. Before planning a cross-border trip, driversshould contact their insurance companies to es-tablish that their comprehensive policies are up-to-date and also cover cross-border travel.Incorrect details on a comprehensive insurancepolicy may lead to a claim being repudiated. If motorists are planning to visit a neighbouringcountry, they may need to include details of theirdestination. Failure to do so places them at riskof no cover, should their vehicle be stolen or dam-aged outside South Africa’s borders.Any driver who crosses the border in their car isrequired to have a certified copy of the vehicle’sregistration or licence papers. Those who havepaid off their cars can take their original registra-tion documents to a Commissioner of Oaths to geta certified copy. Financed vehicles can only betaken out of the country with permission from thefinancing bank.Drivers who are not the registered owner of thevehicle they’re using will need all of the above

documentation, plustwo additional letters,a police affidavit and aletter of authority fromthe registered owner, granting permissionfor the vehicle to crossthe border for theagreed timeframe.Drivers of rental vehi-cles must have a letterfrom the rental com-pany giving full con-sent for the vehicle tobe taken out of thecountry.“These requirementshave been around forsome time, and driversshould become famil-iar with the process –especially if theytravel to neighbouringcountries often. Thelaws are intended tohelp combat cross-border theft ofcars. It’s a small bit ofadmin involved ineach journey, andWesBank has manysystems to assist driv-ers in complying. Cus-tomers who areuncertain of what theyneed can also contactthe bank for clarifica-tion of what is re-quired," saidMahoney.

Way back in 2003, I attended thelaunch of a classy Korean SUVwith genuine off-road capabil-
ity, thanks to its thoughtful design, decentconstruction and on-the-fly electronicallyswitchable four-wheel-drive system thatincluded a low-range transfer box.The Kia Sorento came with either a 2.5-litreturbodiesel engine delivering 104kW and320Nm via a five- speed manual gearbox, ora 3.5-litre V-6 petrol motor churning out143kW and 301Nm paired to a four-speedautomatic. Pricing was R319 995 and R339995 respectively, and in reviewing the car, Iwrote that the Korean manufacturer hadreached the stage that it could compete withits European, American and Japanese rivalson equal terms."Their only handicap is that of image - manybuyers view Korean cars as cheap and nasty,"I said. "The Sorento should go a long way to-wards proving the sceptics wrong." And so ithas. While I was reviewing my notes on thenewest addition to the Sorento range, uppopped an e-mail boasting that Kia had justtopped the American JD Power Initial Qual-ity nameplate ranking for the second year ina row, with buyers reporting fewer issues inthe first 90 days with their new vehicles thanfor any other brand in the USA. Five indi-vidual models, including the Sorento, wontheir classes. That's one box properly tickedthen. The Sorento, now in its third generation, is avery different beast to the first model, havingevolved into a luxury SUV rather than a se-rious off-roader since the second generationin 2009 dispensed with the bakkie-based lad-
der chassis and ditched the low range trans-mission of the 4x4 models. The newest derivative, and the second mostaffordable in the six-car range, is the front-wheel-drive 2.2 CRDi LS automatic that re-tails at R489 995, just behind the entry level127kW / 225Nm 2.4-litre petrol version thatcomes with the same LS spec and a six-speedmanual transmission at R457 995. It's interesting to take a look back over theyears to see how far engine technology hascome, because the four-cylinder oil-burner's147kW of power and 440Nm of torquemakes even the original 3.5-litre V6 petrolengine look silly, and its fuel consumption ofaround 8.0-litres/100km is a huge improve-ment on that of the originals. The current Sorento, launched here in 2015,is a big, spacious, good-looking and well-built vehicle, and all models are wellequipped. The new LS, at R240 000 less thanthe price of the range-topping SXL, is apretty good buy for those who don't needfour-wheel drive, a third row of seats andniceties like heated side mirrors, a rear viewcamera, an electronically-operated rear hatchand an upmarket sound system. All the essentials are there, though, and thecar's a joy to drive. It'll scamper to 100km/hin around 9.5 seconds and top out at a shadeover 200km/h, which is pretty good for twotonnes of metal and plastic. The Kia is refined, the ride-quality and han-dling are superb, and there's loads of spacefor people and luggage. It goes against thegrain for me to say that at R489 995 it deliv-ers value for money, but in today's expensivemarketplace it actually does. It comes with afive-year/100 000 km maintenance plan anda five- year/unlimited distance warranty.

This year’s Scottburgh Classic Car Show will fea-ture the Ford marque. A different marque is cho-sen each year to lead the show and all owners ofpre-1975 Ford automobiles are invited to displaytheir cars at the Scottburgh High School on Sun-day, July 16. Ford automobiles will be positionedin a special enclosure opposite the main grand-stand and overlooking the display arena. They willdrive around the arena with a commentary de-scribing Fords illustrious history. The two primarybeneficiaries of the exciting show will be Actionfor the Blind and Disabled and Angels Care KZN.
These NPOs were also the beneficiaries, last yearbut unfortunately, the bad weather resulted in lessmoney being available to donate than was origi-nally planned. Dozens of classic car clubs havebeen invited to the show and over 450 exhibits ofcars and bikes are expected. The event is againsponsored by the Rising Sun Community News-papers. For more information, contact PeterFielding on 039 976-1995, Vendors Bob Cum-ming on 039 978-2817 or visit www.scottburghclassiccarshow.co.za
