Alexandra Road resi-dents have asked the local police station and
the area’s community policing forum (CPF) to take action against a local liquor store operating after legal hours and allegedly allow-ing underage teenagers into the premises.
Residents are demanding that the store either follow the law or authorities step in and shut the facility down.
The licensed liquor store is sit-uated in close proximity to the residential area, a local school and a nearby old-age home.
Despite several opportunities to comment, store management declined to do so, saying they were "just trying to run a busi-ness".
Residents claim they have witnessed the sale of alcohol to minors “on a fi rst hand basis”: adding that when the matter is raised management gets confron-tational.
“The store should be mon-itored and if it does not com-ply with the law then it must be closed or moved to a non-residen-tial area,” said one resident.
CPF chairman Milton Nco-losi said the forum is aware of the complaints and that the issues should be tackled as a community and that both sides of the matter needed to be considered before any action was taken.
"We are certain that the bot-tle store attracts various people
from all over looking to buy alco-hol which results in people some-times loitering around the area. The problem that the CPF has, is that these people loitering round has created a risk for residents and children in the area,” said Ncolosi.
An additional problem says residents is that patrons of the liq-uor store sometimes consume the liquor outside the store and then throw empty bottles on the street.
"People who buy from the bot-tle store are not allowed to sit in the parking area and drink. They then end up parking their cars on the road, drinking on the pave-ment next to our houses for almost the entire week," said an angry resident.
Alexandra SAPS station com-mander Colonel Philip Mlambo said the CPF has raised the issue with him and that the matter was receiving attention.
"We all need to be more vigi-lant about crime in the area. Small matters can escalate into serious matters. It can start with people hanging around a shop, and the next thing the same people will be forcing entry into private property and homes or become engaged in other criminal activity,” concurred Colonel Mlambo.
South Cluster police spokesper-son Sergeant Mthokozisi Ngob-ese said SAPS patrols have been implemented within the area and they hope to resolve the matter before anything seri-ous takes place.

Pietermaritzburg is in for a treat as the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), the Indian Consulate (Durban) and the Kwa-
Zulu-Natal Department of Arts and Culture in asso-ciation with Midlands Hindu Society will be hosting the famous 12-Member Bhangra and Punjabi Folk Dance group “Rangla Punjab” from India at the Winston Churchill Theatre, Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday 9 May 2017 (19h00).
This internationally acclaimed group will be led by the famous choreographer Shri Ajay
Kumar. The performances are aimed at providing a plat-form to showcase this rich Indian
danceform to local audi-ences while at the same time forging closer cultural links between
South Africa and India.The dance production
“Rangla Punjab” is the true representation of an age-old
Punjabi Village. The audience will be transported back
in time to experience the grandeur yet simplicity of bygone times through colourful costumes, intricate dance moves and scintillating music.
Bhangra is an energetic folk dance of Punjab, India. Traditional Bhangra is done on the beats of dhol, tumbi, algozey, folk boliyan, and other folk instruments of Punjab. Bhangra, which is danced on moonlit nights, is the most popular and thrilling Folk Dance of Punjab and is closely linked with harvest-ing,. The dance begins in slow rhythmic movements and reaches a crescendo. The leader of the Dance is the drummer who plays at the centre of the dancers.
Traditional songs are sung by the dancers and there is immense scope of expressions.
Giddha on the other hand is an immortal folk-dance of women of Punjab. On the eve of a happy and joyous occasion in the family, the young women dance together. Standing in a semi-circle, the clap and sing. Two of them advance away from the rest, sing and dance vigorously while others clap and join in singing. Giddha is a manifestation of the emotions of the daughter’s problem, hopes and aspirations. The Malwa region of Punjab is the fountainhead of this form of folk-dance.
Modern Age Era of Bhangra has become very popular all over the world and is performed by many
college teams and Universities in many world-wide competitions and shows. In “Rangla
Punjab” the choreographers have also added Fusion Dance which include elements from
Bollywood, HipHop, Lyrical, Contempo-rary, Bhangra, and Gidha and Indian Folk and Modern
Dances all in the same production to get the best out of all dance styles. With so much on offer, you don’t want to miss this rare performance. Winston Churchill Thea-tre is THE place to be on Tuesday, 9th May at 7pm.
The Port Shepstone performance will take place at the Andhra Hall, Marburg, Port Shepstone on Sunday 7 May 2017 (14h00).
