OVER the last 80 years, the Umhlanga Rocks Surf Lifesaving Club has seen waves of change. However, searching for information about the club's rich history isn't an easy task, given the lack of information online.
Now however, the Old Boys Club of Umhlanga Rocks have launched a book, 'The History: Umhlanga Rocks Surf Lifesaving Club (1955 to 2010).
John Wrathmall, a life member of the club, and chairman of the Old Boys, was one of the contributors of the coffee table book.
“The book encompasses the history of the club, how it got its name, how the club started and how it has grown from strength to strength since its inception. Being part of the process of putting this book together has been amazing, learning about the club's rich history, it really has been such a rewarding experience.
“It has been three and half years in the pipeline and I'm so proud of what all the contributors have achieved. Mike Cameron, who is also part
of the Old Boys Club was one of the driving forces behind the book. He just said if we don't do it now we would never do it and that helped motivate me,” Wrathmall said.
The chairman of the Old Boys also paid tribute to the team of authors who compiled and contributed to each era for the book.
“As much as this chronical is an attempt to capture the story of the Umhlanga Rocks Lifeaving Club, it should also be seen as a testamant to the selfl ess commitment of all
members, past and present. Without them, none of this would be possible,” he said.
Wrathmall said the legacy of the club has been centered around the community.
“I think the book has a wide appeal to anyone interested in uMhlanga and the lifesaving club. It was and still is central to the uMhlanga community. The feedback we've received from people who have bought the book has been great,” he said.
So far, 200 books have been printed at a cost of R500. If you would like to order a copy or to fi nd out more email: [email protected].

Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve honorary offi cers, Lynne Johnson, Joan Pillay, Sameera Omar and Rosemary Harrison with an area earmarked for dune rehabilitation. Pieces of driftwood have been placed in sections along Beachwood Beach to halt dune erosion.
THERE is no doubt that sand dunes play a vital role in protecting our beaches and shorelines from coastal erosion. With this in mind, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife offi cials have urged residents not to remove driftwood off Beachwood Beach. High tides have wreaked havoc on several dunes undermining them, leaving around a two kilometre stretch of the popular beach vulnerable.
Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve manager, Basil Pather, said wildlife and honorary offi cers had embarked on an education and awareness initiative to sensitise residents visiting the beach to the problem.
“In the past residents were taking driftwood from the beach because it made good fi rewood and furniture. Often the horticultural and landscaping public think

that driftwood is foreign to that environment and they remove it not understanding the full impact of their actions. Climate change has meant higher tides have accelerated erosion of the dunes closest to the sea.
“We've now started placing driftwood on sections of the beach that have been severely damaged to form mini ecosystems. Driftwood performs the dune plant's function, slowing the wind and trapping sand. They form the foredune (a system of sand dunes on the side nearest to the sea)
which helps the dune rehabilitation. The dune degredation has also affected a creek which runs through the mangrove forest,” he said.
Pather added that dunes were vitally important because they formed a natural barrier to wind and waves by absorbing the impact of storm surges and high waves.
Lynne Johnson, who has been an honorary offi cer for the last seven years, echoed Pather's sentiments.
“We have more than 500 learners who visit our reserve every month and we are educating them about the importance of leaving shells and driftwood at the beach to show how they help in dune rehabilitation. We are urging people not to take any driftwood from the beach for that reason,” she said.

Commissioner applauds cops’ bravery while under fi reKWAZULU-NATAL acting provincial commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa has commended police offi cers for their braver. This after a shootout between police and armed robbers on the N2 north bound freeway near Queen Nandi Drive earlier this month.
Three suspects were fatally wounded in the shootout with police while two were arrested with the help of a police chopper. Both arrested suspects were taken to hospital for treatment and later one of them died.
“Once the surviving suspect is discharged from hospital, he will face a number of charges including attempted murder, possession of property suspected to be stolen as well as possession of an unlicensed fi rearm and ammunition. This incident once again serves as a warning to criminals that our police offi cers will defend themselves when they come under fi re while executing their duties.
Our police offi cers were extremely professional and the response witnessed is in line with the back to basics approach adopted by police,” said Langa.
The police offi cers spotted a white Mercedes Benz, with fi ve occupants along the N2 north bound freeway near Queen Nandi Drive. When they attempted to stop the vehicle, after receiving a tip off of a planned robbery, the suspects opened fi re on the policemen while fl eeing.
The vehicle used by the suspects was taken during a robbery in Sydenham last month. A shootout ensued and the suspects pushed the police vehicle off the road which resulted in both vehicles landing in the oncoming south bound lane.
“Police seized four unlicensed fi rearms with ammunition, a police radio and housebreaking implements. Three police offi cers were injured as a result of collision and were also taken to hospital for treatment,” added Langa. The vehicle used by the suspects was taken during a robbery in Sydenham last month.
GLENASHLEY residents have expressed their unhappiness at an application by the City to install a mast on Adelaide Place. Residents say they
are baffl ed the City would consider erecting a concrete mast in popular a children's park.
According to the City the mast is part of a city-
wide CCTV project in line with the Municipal Integrated Development Programme. Several concrete towers have been installed in open spaces around the city.
Several residents expressed their concern sighting a deal between the eThekwini Municipality and MTN which allegedly allows the latter to make use of existing municipal infrastructure in order to
install cellular transmitting technology. What is more, residents say there has been no offi cial notifi cation from the municipality indicating the intention to put up a mast.
Last week, a group of residents met with ward councillor, Heinz de Boer, to air out their concerns. One of the residents, Leon Boshoff said he could not fathom why the City would choose the cul-de-sac.
“We actually only heard about the plan through a health inspector. We are worried the City will put up the mast without consulting anyone fi rst. This is a public park where children play every day, there are swings, a slide and a merry-go-round.
“There's also the potential effects on our health which
is extremely concerning. The other aspect to consider is there is a massive indigenous tree in the park that hawks and eagles use. I've read articles on how cell phone masts affect birdlife.
“From a residential property value, this will adversely affect our rates. It will also be an eye-sore in this beautiful park. There is a tower down the road on Newport Avenue, why
would the City want to erect the mast here?” Boshoff queried.
Renu Naicker, who has lived on Adelaide Place for nine years, says the park is used by several residents for picnics as well as domestic workers.
“Domestic workers from the area come to the park on some nights to have religious ceremonies, because the parks have lights at night. I have three children who use the park everyday.
“Besides the negative health impact and property devaluation, the decision makes no sense. There is a massive tower on Umhlanga Rocks Drive, why doesn't the City use that? I don't see a need for another one in the area, especially a dead-end road, that baffl es me,” Naicker said.

Two operations targeting drunk drivers were held on the M41 and M4 last week which resulted in 37 arrests.
THE Durban North SAPS is sending out a strong message to drunk drivers in the area. This comes after a total of 37 drunk drivers were arrested by Durban North SAPS over a period of fi ve days last week. On Tuesday night, Durban North SAPS along with Metro Police set up a roadblock on the M4 near the Virginia off-ramp where 22 drivers were arrested for drunken driving. One of the drunken drivers accused police offi cers of celebrating the ANC's victory over the motion of 'no confi dence' vote in President Jacob Zuma.
According to station spokesman, Capt Raymond Deokaran, other drivers nabbed on the night suggested police go after ‘real criminals’.
“Being arrested for drunk driving is not a misdemeanor, it is a serious crime and a preventable choice. We have a zero tolerance approach
for drunken driving, so appeals for leniency because some people view this as a ‘lesser crime’ is ridiculous. This was the second roadblock in fi ve days. On Friday last week, 15 drivers were arrested for drunk driving on the M41 going towards Gateway. We will continue to host roadblocks to try to ensure safety on our roads,” Deokaran said
drunk drivers and/or pedestrians. The NPO was founded by Smit, after her 23-year-old-son, Chas, was killed in September 2005, by a driver who had been drinking.
“There are too little roadblocks in the area. I’ve also become aware of people deliberately posting messages on social media warning of roadblocks. Sadly, some people view drunk driving as a minor infraction, and not as a criminal act. That mindset has got to change, if you consider that more than 60 per cent of the deaths on our roads is alcohol related,” Smit said.
“The most important thing is most of these accidents are preventable. I don’t think it’s a question of poor legislation as some have suggested, we have exceptionally good legislation. What let us down is poor accident reconstruction and laws not being enforced properly.”

According to Caro Smit, Founder of South Africans Against Drunk Driving (SADD) more than 60 per cent of the 18 000 deaths a year on the roads in the country are associated with

It’s Women’s Month and safety for women is still a major issue across South Africa. Here are some apps that have been developed for women. It’s 2017, the world has evolved into a technological hub of innovation and progression yet women are still subjected to personal attacks, violence, rape, abuse and the list goes on. One
just has to read the headlines online to see the amount of misogyny that exists in the world from police, politicians, authorities, and media. In South Africa alone, the amount of reported cases of women being abducted, raped and killed is alarming. How can technology play a role in trying to combat this reality?
MySOS is a locally developed app that offers users access to contact details and addresses for doctors, hospitals, pharmacies, dentists, vets and police stations in South Africa.
It also has a special feature called mySOS Track Me that can track your journey anywhere in SA. If you are running late it checks your GPS location and notifi es your emergency SOS contacts
Bull Horns fi rst burst into the spotlight in South Africa in 2014. Made by App Developer Studio, the Bull Horns app allows a panic button to be added to a user’s smartphone. It allows the user to dial their security company or the police automatically in an emergency situation. The app is available on both Android and Apple smartphones and is free to download and use. It allows up to fi ve private contacts.
Women and children are the most targeted victims of abuse and rape not only when they are in dangerous places. The Watch Over Me App allows your contacts to follow your journey. You can specify how long you want it to track your GPS location until you reach your destination. The best thing about the app is that if you are in a dangerous situation, you can shake your phone to trigger an emergency alert.

In fi nancial terms, benefi ts of the plan for the city include a R229-million annual savings from loss reduction, a R1260-million annual increase in billed revenue from metered consumption and R38-million from the increase in sewer charges which will be implemented over 10 years.
“Education and awareness campaigns, while ongoing, will be refocused and intensifi ed. The installation of smart meters, valve control training and resizing of meters is still to commence while the replacement of aged meters will be intensifi ed under the programme. The metering of informal settlements is very slow and a programme will commence soon while the metering of rural properties will also be intensifi ed. Pilots of treated effl uent reuse are underway and by-laws review will commence,” he said.
Mashoko said 68 000 water fl ow restrictors had been installed in the City to deal with the drought in the past year.
A two pronged approach to water conservation will be pursued, namely demand reduction from the consumer side and demand reduction from the utility side, he said.
He outlined new targets for water loss through bursts and leaks from 30 per cent to 25 per cent in the next
fi ve years and 17 per cent by 2027. Water loss through inaccurate
meters, billing errors and illegal connections is currently 10 percent, and the new target has been set at fi ve per cent in the next fi ve years and three per cent by 2027.
Targets on water losses through
authorised unbilled consumption in rural areas, informal areas, RDP areas and fi re fi ghting and tanker services have been set a fi ve per cent in the next fi ve years and three per cent by 2027 which would be an improvement from the current loss of 10 per cent.
Study reveals male circumcision reduces HIV risk for womenRESEARCH presented at the International AIDS Society Conference on HIV Science in Paris has revealed that voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) could lower HIV risk for women by 30 per cent.
Research has already established that women, whose male partners are circumcised, can benefi t from a reduced risk of genital ulcers, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), such as herpes and syphilis, bacterial vaginosis and vaginalis, but there was little evidence of its protective benefi ts against HIV for women until the recent study.
Rachael Rawlinson, Chief Operating Offi cer for CareWorks – an HIV management organisation – described the research as a break-through discovery.
“Almost a decade ago, a meta-analysis found no evidence to suggest that male circumcision directly reduced the risk of women acquiring HIV. It only pointed to lowering a man’s risk of contracting HIV by 60 per cent, which makes this new fi nding so signifi cant. Now there’s no disputing that VMMC is important for HIV prevention for both men and women,” said Rawlinson.
The Water Conservation and Water Demand Management Plan outlines steps the city will take to ensure a sustainable water supply up to the year 2027. Several residents, including Jenny Lourenco have been adversely affected by the water cuts on a nightly basis.
We will use the lessons learnt in the last 10 years and avoid the mistakes made
A WATER Conservation and Water Demand Management Plan, which focuses on the next decade, was presented at a meeting of the Executive Committee this week by deputy City Manager for Trading Services Philemon Mashoko.
The plan outlines steps the city will take to ensure a sustainable water supply up to the year 2027. Among these steps is the establishment of a fi rst level response team to deal with water pipe bursts and leaks in record time.
The plan also deals with the security of water supply which, among others, includes fi nancial
sustainability, water quality, management capacity, water resources, including ground water, the reuse of effl uent, dams, sea water and rainwater harvesting, water conservation, water demand management and infrastructure stability.
The broad objectives of the plan, according to Mashoko is to reduce non-revenue water to less than 20 per cent and reduce the annual water demand growth to less than one per cent.
It also seeks to reduce unrestricted average domestic water consumption (wastage) by 25 per cent, and increase water reuse to 100M per day. It also includes the installation of meters on all water connections, by 2022.
“We will use the lessons learnt in the last 10 years and avoid the mistakes made while maximising on the interventions and methodology that yielded good results,” he said.
Gert van Schalkwyk, resident engineer (structures) for the main consulting engineers SMEC South Africa, said Bridge B0215 has a deck length of 947 metres, which not only makes it the longest incrementally launched bridge in the Southern hemisphere, but also one of the longest structures in South Africa.
“Given the size of the decks and the fact these decks were launched from the two opposite ends of the site, this accurate fi nal position is a testimony of the workmanship and world class engineering capabilities in South Africa.
“The positioning of the stitch between the north and south ramps to close the gap may well be considered as the crowning achievement and is testament to not only design excellence but also implementation,” he said.

IT was a champagne popping event recently when the north and south decks of the one-kilometre ramp of the Mt Edgecombe Interchange were joined.
While motorists went about their way negotiating the labyrinth of deviations below the multi-directional bridges being constructed, history was unfolding more than 20 metres above them when the longest incrementally launched bridge in South Africa neared completion.
The one-kilometre long bridge forms part of the improvements being undertaken by the South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) at the N2/M41 Mt Edgecombe Interchange north of Durban, connecting Phoenix and uMhlanga with Durban and the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal.
Corné Roux, project manager for SANRAL Eastern Region, said due to the expansion of the uMhlanga and La Lucia Ridge areas, the existing interchange had been operating at capacity with vehicles backing up on the M41 and onto the N2 in peak hours.
“An additional 40 000 vehicles enter or leave the N2 from the M41 daily resulting in substantial queuing of vehicles during the day. This, together with expected future expansions and anticipated development of the Cornubia area, required the existing interchange to be upgraded in order to improve the fl ow to and from the N2 and M41 to the supporting road network.”
Roux said the interchange upgrade has changed the landscape forever and is sure to become a well-known landmark in years to come.
“Constructing one of the longest structures ever built in South Africa over one of the busiest intersections in KwaZulu-Natal successfully, without ever closing any of the roads permanently, bears testimony to the success of the selected construction methods and materials,” he said.
Concrete is poured to close the gap between the two ramps.

Local resident, Jason Donnison, gestures to one of the spots hardest hit by illegal dumping at the intersection of Rinaldo Road and Chris Hani (North Coast) Road.
SEVERAL residents are worried about the increased dumping at the intersection of Rinaldo Road and Chris Hani (North Coast Road).
This comes after the City's Parks Department cut back large tracts of land at the bottom of Rinaldo Road. The City also cut back several alien invasive plants and trees in the area.
However, since the operation, which occurred more than two weeks ago, residents have noticed more people dumping their rubbish down some of the banks at the intersection.
One resident, who did not want to be named, said he was concerned the area could become another 'Ryde Place', where illegal dumping has become commonplace.
“The positive is the area is cleared so any potential criminals
who used the thick vegetation to hide in will be easily seen. It has also shown how much rubbish had been thrown into the park over the years. Now, added to the existing rubbish, I've seen people dumping packets of refuse and other items down the side of the bank. We don't want another Ryde Place, which is a few kilometres away, where people continue to dump on a regular basis. The potential is here for people to start dumping more,” he said.
Another resident, Jason Donnison, said he too was concerned over the dumping.
“It is concerning. As a resident in the area this isn't what you want to see especially as this impacts on the environment. There seems to be an increase in dumping at the Rinaldo Road/Chris Hani Road intersection
which is also worrying,” he said. Ward 110 councillor, Pete
Graham, allayed residents' fears saying the City had plans to clear the rubbish away as well as green the area.
“Following a request to the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department after a mugging, the City took the decision to cut back a large portion of the trees in and plants in the area. Durban Solid Waste are meant to clean up the area in order for the greening process to start.
“I understand the residents are afraid of more dumping taking place but a large part of what you see along the stretch, from the Rinaldo Road industrial park all the way to the intersection, was there when the trees were cut back,” he said.
Ward 110 councillor, Pete Graham, shows how heavy duty trucks are damaging municipal infrastructure in the Glen Anil area.
Trucks wreaking havoc in Glen AnilWARD 110 councillor, Pete Graham, has expressed his concern over the destruction of City property in certain sections of Glen Anil.
The area, which is part industrial, part residential, has had a longstanding problem with heavy-duty vehicles driving over and ruining kerbs, knocking down street signs as well as damaging sewer lines.
One area of particular concern is the intersection of Cypress Drive and Wisteria Grove, where the pavement has been repeatedly damaged by trucks using the road as a turning circle.
“Some of these heavy duty trucks come up Cypress Drive and turn in Wisteria (Grove), before driving into Bauhinia Drive which is what is causing the damage. Several residents have expressed their unhappiness about the state of the roads. Some of the trucks use this intersection as their turning circle because they can't drive up the incline at Bauhinia. Essentially they prefer going downhill.
“I will be in contact with the eThekwini Traffi c Authority (ETA) to determine the tonnage the residential section and indeed the business section can take. We cannot continue having a situation like this develop,” Graham said.

Mayor Zandile Gumede believes that this initiative will make the people of Durban take responsibilty of their community.
Eskom to submit revenue infoESKOM said it will submit a complete revenue application to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) for the 2018/19 fi nancial year. On Friday, last week, Nersa announced its decision that no condonation would be granted to Eskom’s request to deviate from meeting certain requirements of the Multi-Year Price Determination (MYPD).
“In its reason for [the] decision, Nersa guides Eskom in making assumptions for certain of the MYPD methodology and MIRTA [Minimum Information Requirements for Tariff Application] requirements that could not be met. As an example, Eskom is not in a position to attribute burn costs and volumes to particular contract types. This is due to coal stockpiles not being distinguished in accordance with each coal contract type,” said Eskom.
Cleaning-up the environment does not only create a more pleasant place to live, but also creates a good impression
ETHEKWINI Mayor, councillor Zandile Gumede offi cially launched the Mayoral Healthy City Initiative, a high-impact programme aimed at promoting a holistically healthy city at the City Hall recently.
According to Gumede, the health of a city goes beyond the physical well being of its residents, to include the city’s fi nancial status, levels of cleanliness, environmental protection and socioeconomic developments.
"Cleanliness is important in our life from all the aspects. We should take care of it all through life. Practice of cleanliness starts from the home and school from the very little age. It affects us very badly when we do not maintain cleanliness," she said.
KZN Beach Clean-up founder and Durban North resident, Natalie Gorven applauded the city for this great initiative and encourage people to take ownership of the city.
The clean-up organisation is committed to working locally to improve the quality of oceans and waterways, making them safer for the creatures that inhabit them as well as for the community, thereby contributing towards a sustainable future.
Last year, the mayor said the future of eThekwini and the realisation of its vision to be the Africa’s most caring and livable City by 2030 hinges on building a holistically and sustainable healthy city.
"This could be achieved by working together with businesses, informal traders, transport associations, NGOs and all the departments of the city. Cleaning-up the environment does not only create a more pleasant place to live, but also creates a good impression on prospective employers, investors, professionals, and tourists who visit our areas," she said.
She also highlighted that clean-up efforts may provide community health benefi ts such as the elimination of breeding sites for mosquitoes and other dangerous pests.
"We want political parties and businesses to play a meaningful role because we all stand to benefi t from a clean environment. We want NGOs and civic movement to be part of this. We want taxi associations to be part of this movement for a clean environment," she added. Gumede plans to enforce the city bylaws and Metro Police will act on those who break the law.
SA Uber users offered a chance for cash trip payments
UBER has introduced a new, pilot cash indicator feature which allows drivers to choose whether they would like to accept a cash trip request or not.
Jonathan Ayache, general manager at Uber South Africa said when Uber came to South Africa in 2009 their mission was to solve a simple problem – how do you get a ride at the touch of a button?
"Six years and over two billion trips after Uber’s arrival in South Africa, we’ve started tackling an even greater challenge: reducing congestion and pollution in our cities by getting more people into fewer cars.
"We’ve received a lot of feedback from driver-partners. It came from our focus groups, comments at partner appreciation events and recent safety working groups. Drivers felt the cash option opened them up to new riders and provides the consumer with more choice," said Ayache.
Ayache said that feedback from driver-partners showed, "Uber believes riders should have the freedom to pay how they wish. The cash indicator will only appear to driver-partners on cash trips – no indicator will pop up for card trips.
The dispatch process will not be impacted at all, should a driver choose to decline the request, the app will immediately alert another driver-partner," said Ayache.

All set for world record attemptTHE Astronomical Society of Southern Africa (ASSA) is attempting to break a Guinness World Record on 18 August at the Durban Botanic Gardens. More than 2 000 people will attempt to break a world record for the largest number of star gazers assembled in one place to watch the stars together. The current record holder is the Canberra Astronomical Society at the Mount Stromlo Observatory in Australia with 1869 people.
ASSA media director, Logan Govender was confi dent that Durban had the potential to break that record.
“From the support that we get from the Durban public for our other events,” he said.
This is an attempt to show people how easy it is to fi nd their way around the sky. ASSA has a method of teaching people to identify 200 night-sky objects in just 40 minutes.
“We would like to change the belief that astronomy is the preserve of scientists and mathematicians and will have a number of telescopes, each focussed on a different object”.
The public is invited spread out a blanket on the lawns of the garden, bring pair of binoculars, food and drink and enjoy this spectacle in safety. It is important to bring along a pair of binoculars to be included in the count. The event will commence soon after sunset and the offi cial count.
For further information, contact Logan Govender on 083 228 6993 or www.astronomydurban.co.za.
LOCAL resident, Gill Austin has urged the North Durban community to come out in their numbers and support the Emergency Services Awareness Day on Saturday, 26 August, at Crusaders Sports Club. The event which begins at 10am and ends at 4pm will see displays from various emergency services departments. The Law Enforcement Foundation, who are hosting the event, hope the day will also raise awareness of the often under-appreciated and often unrecognised emergency services personnel.
Now in its third year, Austin, a member of the foundation, is confi dent that the day will be a success.
“We formed the foundation to aid in the reduction of crime in our community. The group funds various crime prevention initiatives and works closely with the Durban North/Umhlanga CPF and the SAPS. We believe powerful communities are built on the back of a united effort and that’s why we are urging residents to come out and support the day.
“There’s going to be displays from various emergency services departments and much much more. There will also be food stalls, a fl ea market, jumping castles for the kids, as well as mock hijacking, accident and rescue displays throughout the day. I think people don’t realise the responsibility
emergency service personnel actually have, be it the police, security companies or paramedics. This day is about appreciating what they do for us as well as highlighting the work they do,” Austin said.
Another exciting aspect of this year's show is the appearance of the SANDF's 15 Squadron Oryx Helicopter who will also be doing a display on the day. Austin added Dave Guiselli will be the MC and DJ for the day.
Emergency Services personnel, Kyle van Reenen, Chad Katz, Prabashan Marimuthu, Nitesh Birbal and Tyron Powell (centre).

fascinating facts about the backBacks are rather curvyThe human spine has four natural curves which develop at different times as we grow and the two outward bending curves, the thoracic (mid back) and sacral (pelvic),
develop early before birth. The other two curves become more
pronounced at key points in infant development and are the inward cervical curve which develops when a baby can hold up its head, and finally, the lumbar inward curve develops at the point when a toddler begins to walk.
Crack backThere are stories about treatments where backs were “cracked” all through the history of medicine. Some more beneficial than others. One extreme example, apparently advocated by the father of “do no harm” Hippocrates himself, described a treatment which involves strapping someone with an abnormally curved spine to a ladder, and then dropping the ladder (and patient) from a height!
However, the modern practice of chiropractic medicine began in 1895 when a man named Daniel David Palmer who described himself as a “magnetic healer,” claimed to have restored the hearing of a deaf man by popping one of his vertebra back into place. Palmer is said to have believed that vertebral misalignment which he described as “subluxation” was responsible for over 95 per cent of diseases.
Medical historyEarliest accounts of medical history are filled with stories of back pain and various remedies to help them.
An ancient Egyptian scroll known as the Edwin Smith Surgical Papyrus, named after the archaeologist who purchased it in 1862, explains how to diagnose what it describes as a “pulled vertebra”, however the part dealing with treatment is lost while on the other side of the globe as early as 2700B.C. the Chinese were practicing intentional spinal manipulation.

s
Not all backs are equalThe standard 33 vertebrae which comprise the seven cervical, 12 thoracic, five lumbar, five sacral and four coccygeal varies between 32 and 35 in humans with the most common range of difference occurring in the pelvic area.
BREASTFEEDING mothers around the world observed the importance of this life giving act in the fi rst week of August. However the sad reality is that not all mothers can provide this essential super food to their newborn babies.
In a fi rst for the continent, a dedicated group of clinical and technical advisors came up with a life-saving Netcare Ncelisa human milk banks initiative extending their human milk bank service offering to include colostrum donations for babies in critical need.
Durban North resident and fi rst-time mother, Leanne Hartwig couldn't imagine not being able to breastfeed her new born son, Jack Zwart who was born at the Netcare uMhlanga Hospital on Monday, 7 August.
"Breastfeeding is my only feeding plan and I plan to do it as long as I possibly can," she said.
Newborns like Jack need colostrum, produced by the mother in the initial days after birth, also referred to as ‘liquid gold’ owing to its yellowish orange colour and highly benefi cial properties. This is eventually replaced by mature human milk around the third to fourth day after birth.
First-time mother, Leanne Hartwig plans to breastfeed her son, Jack Zwart as long as she possibly can.
Breastfeeding is my only feeding plan and I plan to do it as long as I possibly can
Following an 18-month collaborative project under the leadership of neonatologist, Dr Ricky Dippenaar and Netcare’s human milk bank co-ordinator, Linda Pretorius, the fi rst four Ncelisa human milk banks located at Netcare maternity units are now fully operational.
According to Sandy Hamblin, project manager at Domino Foundation Babies’ Home in Durban North that looks after and cares for abandoned babies and toddlers said they rely on formular as the proceedure to keep the milk in its best condition is quiet costly.
"It is challenging to keep mothers motivated to keep coming in to provide the milk as it sometimes keeps them away from their newborn babies," she said.
Less than three weeks since the inception of the colostrum project, the fruits of the team’s efforts are already paying off, with colostrum donations having provided a much-needed lifeline to as many as 13 severely compromised premature babies in various healthcare facilities throughout South Africa.

For the love of cricket and musicDON’T miss the powerhouse, smokey sound of Luke Lovemore at this year’s White Mountain Festival near Giant’s Castle from 28 September to 1 October. A Top 7 fi nalist on the 2017 season of M-Net’s The Voice SA, the 23-year-old Northwood School old boy plays a fusion of blues, rock and folk and is currently working on material for his debut album. We asked him about his fondest childhood memory and he told us it was the time his aunt gave him a cricket ball.
What things don’t you like doing, name two? I don’t like making the bed (you’re just going to get back into it) but my wife makes me do it anyway, and getting sick. Whenever I get sick I lose my voice and I can’t sing.
Tell us about a time when things didn't go the way you wanted? I always wanted to be a South African cricketer. When I was 15, my friends and I thought we could get away with some mischievous activities, only to be caught red-handed by my dad and step mom. Needless to say I was grounded for six months. It was in those six months that I fell in love with music. My dreams of being a world class sportsman changed into dreams of being a world class musician and I couldn’t be happier.
What’s your strongest memory of your childhood? I used to be a massive cricket fan when I was young and my aunt and I would always talk about SA cricket and the players and we would watch the games together. I was having my 10th birthday and my aunt was very sick so my father picked me up early from school to go see her. She gave me a white cricket ball. Back then they were impossible to fi nd so myself and my aunt were immediately in tears. She passed away a few days later. I still have that cricket ball.
What do you dislike about South Africa? The thing is, no matter where you go in the world, there will always be problems with that place. Life is too short to worry about negative things (even though I do). We live in a beautiful country with beautiful people.
What makes you angry? Bad drivers (I’d like to think I am a great driver) and people who are unnecessarily nasty and rude.
Name one misconception you think people have about you? People think that I am a hard ass rocker dude, when in actual fact I am a huge softie. My wife often calls me a big baby.
What do you envision yourself doing when you turn 80?Living on my own sustainable farm with my wife and having an amazing music and food and wine festival there every year.
What do you think about when you are alone in your car? I always think about song lyrics and writing new songs. What I usually end up doing is singing as loud and as high as possible, because why not? I often get strange looks!
Luke Love will perform at the annual White Mountain Festival near Giant’s Castle from 28 September to 1 October.

The previous Peugeot 3008 was, to be hon-est, ugly and in a world
where style is fast becoming the name of the game, it was time for the French car maker to give us something worth looking at.
They've done just that with the new 3008, a car that has al-ready won the European Car of The Year title. So what is this new SUV like?
The styling: It's clear to see Peugeot is making sure the 3008 is 100% SUV. The front end features a distinctive nose designed to resemble that of a pouncing lion. I like it, par-ticularly the big grille with its chrome design elements. I also like the way the bumper cuts into the headlights for a unique effect. Another nice touch is the
18 August 2017
I was really impressed with the overall product. The ride might not be as compliant as it should be, but that doesn't detract from the overall quality. It features the latest must-haves in technology as well as inoffensive styling. What is also impressive is that the entry level model has been tted with an array of standard features, which gives it an advantage over its competitors.
The GT-Line I drove has all the styling and gadgets that you could wish for, and for R499 900, it is a package you should de nitely consider.
Pricing starts from R399,900 for the 3008 1.6 THP Active and goes up to R569 900 for the 3008 1.6 THP GT Line+ AT.
clamshell bonnet like of a Land Rover. Along the side, I noticed a distinct character line which extenuates the wheel arches for a sportier look.
At the back, the C-pillars have been blacked out as is the case with many new SUVs these days. The rear itself also looks pretty good thanks to elements such as the taillights, which feature a three claw-like design. There are neat gloss black ele-ments below the rear window, which gives the illusion of size and adds to the overall styling.
Interior design: I think it's fair to say that the interior of the new 3008 blows the competi-tion out of the water. From the driver's seat, I noticed that the cockpit wraps around the driver, the steering wheel is small for better control and the sweeping dashboard and doors feature inserts made from a denim-like
material instead of plastic. There is an eight-inch top mounted touchscreen display as well as a 12.3-inch digital instru-ment cluster known as Peugeot i-Cockpit. It's very futuristic and offers a host of various display con gurations. It is however the switches for the climate control and infotainment that I found to be a highlight due to their toggle switch like design.
Practicality: The 3008 is a C-segment SUV and therefore
needs to be spacious and practi-cal, which it is. Luggage space is rated at around 520-litres and 1 670-li-tres with the rear seats folded down.
Interior space has been im-proved by an additional 24mm of legroom, four millimetres of elbow room and 36mm of head-room for rear occupants.
Despite the increased passen-ger and luggage capacities, the new model is, on average, 100kg lighter than the previous 3008.
The drive: At the launch, I drove the fuel ef cient 121kW 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine, connected to a smooth shifting six-speed automatic gearbox. Push the Sport button and not only does the car liven up, it also gives a throatier sound, which is actually just a sound enhancer playing through the speakers. The steering also gets weighted for a sportier feel.
There is a diesel derivative arriving early next year which I reckon will be ideal.
Our drive took us on the back roads around the Hartbeespoort Dam area. I found the ride to be slightly on the rm side, how-ever, on gravel the car seemed to remain composed, even at speed. Safety features such as Active Safety Brake, Distance Alert and an Active Involuntary Crossing Line Warning system have also been added.

The BMW 4-series has been on sale for around four years now and it
was time for the German car maker to give the range a slight revision. I joined the national motoring media in the Lowveld in sampling the updated Coupé, Cabriolet and four-door Gran-Coupé.
What has changed? On the face of it, there are
new LED headlights featuring new daytime running lights and a menacing black nish. The same applies to the rear with LED lights and an all-round more uid design. The only other exterior changes are new alloy wheel designs and two new colours; the
eye-catching Snapper Rocks Blue and Sunset Orange.
Inside, BMW has added some new technology to what I reckon is still a pretty well designed interior with top quality materials. Some of the cars I drove featured a digital instrument cluster which seems to be the latest must-have item in your car. It has the ability to change its look, colour and theme depending on which drive mode you select. There's the option of Eco Pro, Comfort and Sport modes.
BMW has loaded its updated software to include the same style menu as the 5-and 7-series. It takes some getting used to, but looks better than before and features updated Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
About the experienceBMW plotted a fantastic route
boasting kilometres of open roads meandering through the mountains. I opted for the 420i GranCoupé. Other models in the range include the 430i, 440i and 420d. The diesel engine is only available in the Coupé and GranCoupé.
After a good few kilometres, I arrived at our lunch venue with a massive smile on my face. The 420i might not be the most rapid within the ange, but it still develops 135kW and now features a revised suspension for improved handling.
Lunch over, I climbed into the 420i Cabriolet which has a metal folding roof. It sure looks good with the roof down and while
nothing comes close to matching drop-top motoring, especially given our location, the Cabriolet didn't feel as planted or as light as the GranCoupé, preferring instead to be a comfortable cruiser. In my opinion, the updated 4-series remains an attractive buy. I was very impressed with the performance of the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine in the 420i, as well as the overall driving dynamics of the GranCoupé.
What is more noticeable is the range pricing. BMW claims it has fought long and hard to include an array of standard equipment for the price, as well as improving nance options to make it easier
for buyers to get in and out of a 4-series. Prices start from R603,200.

The Inex Legends class is an affordable category of motor racing inter-
nationally that is fast gaining ground internationally. The cars use four cylinder 1200cc Yamaha motorcycle engines and gearboxes in space-frame chassis with glass bre bod-ies, rear-wheel drive, double A-frame front suspension and disc brakes.
The little cars weigh in at under 500 kg which means that with 100 kW on tap they’re blin-dingly quick, and all engines are sealed before delivery to the owner, so performance should be similar for all. Racers are limited to three sets of tyres per
season, and set-up is most im-portant to ensure quick lap times with minimal tyre wear.
The Inex Legend racers vis-ited Dezzi Raceway as part of the Historic Tour Race Day and treated an enthusiastic crowd to 3 exciting heats.
The picturesque venue is both challenging and demanding on drivers, and the 15 strong Leg-ends eld produced good racing from rst to last. Richard Upton won one heat and nished sec-ond to Devin Robertson in the other two, but because the lat-ter does not score championship points, Upton effectively scored a hat trick which will further boost his championship hopes. Inex Legends provide fine racing with fibreglass sprint cars using motorcycle engines. Pics by Gavin Foster
Paige Lindenberg from Cape Town hussles her 1968 500 hp Ford Fairlane’s three tons around Dezzy’s in the Pre ‘80 Saloons class. Dezzi - a quality grid full of classy cars.

24 Friday, 18 August 2017 New Model 6
Having surfaced online last month ahead of its world debut at the Frankfurt
Motor Show in September, Suzu-ki has released rst interior shots of the new Swift Sport.
In a departure from the outgo-ing model, the new Sport features a completely redesigned dash with a new touchscreen display taking pride of place, against red inserts extending down the side of the cen-tre console and below the electric
window switches. The new sports at bottom steering wheels gets red
stitching, with the same applying to the Sport embossed seats.
Reportedly tipping the scales from as low as 870 kg, the Swift Sport will drop the normally aspirated 1.6-litre engine for a 1.4-litre turbo developing 103 kW and 220 Nm of torque.
A six-speed manual gearbox will be standard with a rst six-speed automatic optional.

KwaZulu Natal is not a regular venue for South African Na-
tional Championship mo-torsport, but Saturday, 19 August will be a welcome exception for local race fans when the Mopar SA Endur-ance Series heads to Dezzi Raceway outside Port Shep-stone for the fourth round of the series at the Arnold Chatz Cars Dezzi 3-Hour.
This weekend not only sees the fastest racing cars in the country converging on Dezzi Raceway from around the country, but it will also see several intriguing cham-pionship battles playing out, several of which feature local KZN teams and drivers ght-ing it out against SA’s nest.
Endurance racing is a spec-tacular attraction and the lo-cal series has provided huge
entertainment with a regular signi cant sting in the tail.
The recent Campos Cape 400 for instance, saw both the leading and third-placed cars at the start of the nal lap not making the nish — so there’s very good reason for local race fans to take a drive down the N2 for what promises to be a great Arnold Chatz Cars Race Day at the Dezzi Race-way.

Keshav Maharaj was one of the shining lights for the Proteas in the recent series loss to England. PHOTO:Gallo Images (Gameplan Media)
WHEN Keshav Maharaj made his test debut for the Proteas in Perth last year, he never expected that he would have taken 43 wickets after his 11th test match.
The Effi ngham-born left-arm spinner’s introduction to international cricket was a baptism of fi re at the WACA in Perth last November, but he took to it like a duck to the water. He took four wickets for the match and added an unbeaten second-innings score of 41 on an unforgiving Perth pitch which led the Proteas to a 177-run win over Australia.
The Northwood School old boy was South Africa’s leading wicket-taker in the series against England with 17 wickets. He attributes his success to his hunger to do well.
“I just wanted to do well domestically and win games for the Dolphins. I still want to achieve a lot in international cricket, I think thus far I've just tried to keep things simple and do what's required for the team.
“I'm a person who enjoys hard work so spending relentless hours working on aspects of my game is something I really do enjoy and have no complaints about. I believe in the old cliché of hard work
Favourite food? I enjoy pizza and traditional Indian dishes.Favourite music and artist or band? I enjoy any music that's pleasing on my ear nothing in specifi c.Any mantra or quote that you live by? I live each day as if it's my last hence I'm full of energy. If you had superpowers what would you change in the world and why? I think I'd like
to just see the world a happier and more peaceful place.Best mate in the Proteas team and the Dolphins? I get along really well with most of the guys but Vernon Philander and I do spend a lot of time on tour together. Back home at the Dolphins Khaya Zondo and I have been together since youngster days so we get along really well.
paying off somewhere down the line, but perseverance through the hard work will help you along the way,” Maharaj said.
Maharaj hasn’t played a single game in turning sub-continent conditions but he has 40 wickets to his name in tests. His exploits has had some expert insinuating that he may be South Africa’s best spinner ever.
...spending relentless hours working on aspects of my game is something I really do enjoy
“I don't recall that being said to me, however I'm not in the caliber of the great spinners we have had in the past as yet such as Paul Harris, Paul Adams, Robin Peterson or even the current One Day International (ODI) spinner Imran Tahir.
Maharaj said that he started to take his batting seriously as he would like to be known as an all-rounder.

TWO local athletes have been chosen to represent South Africa at this year's ISA World StandUp Paddle and Paddleboard Championship (WSUPPC) in Denmark. Jackie Fourie De Billot and Lande Williamson, will be taking part in various races at the championships which includes races in Copenhagen and Klitmøller, often referred to as Cold Hawaii.
De Billot will be competing in the 18 kilometre long distance race, the 200 metre sprint event as well as the technical race.
“It's always special getting a national call-up. This is my second time representing SA at the world champs. I fi nished 11th last year in the long distance race, which to be honest, was a little disappointing.
“I'm defi nitely feeling more confi dent this year, I think the champs in Fiji were a valuable learning tool. I know how to pace myself this year. In the long distance race last year, I pushed too hard and burned out near the end which cost me,” she said.
Speaking of the events, De Billot, said each race requires a different skill set.
“For the 18 kilometre race, it's all

Lande Williamson and Jackie Fourie De Billot have been chosen to represent South Africa at the ISA World StandUp Paddleboard Championship (WSUPPC) in Denmark. They are the only Durban athletes in the South African team.
Northwood victorious against UK touring sideNORTHWOOD School hosted Loughborough Grammar School from the UK in two hockey matches last week. The Knights won both games against the touring side.
The fi rst match saw a future U16 Northwood team take on an older and more experienced Loughborough second XI. The match started off at a blistering pace that resulted in some early chances for both sides, however an excellent fl ick into the bottom right of the goal from Dylan Ferreira off a PC meant the hosts took the early lead.
That goal seemed to settle the nerves of the Northwood boys who then began to pass the ball with precision and pace, leaving the Loughborough defence vulnerable. Brayden Bergset capitalised on this and scored a stunning goal.
Not long after that, Nicholas Bright found the roof of the net with a great strike of his own. Loughborough then hit back just before the half with a goal of their own to leave the score 3-1 at the break. The second half saw an exhibition of hockey from Northwood who left Loughborough in their wake with four unanswered goals to run out 7-1 victors.
The second match saw a ‘stayers’ Northwood team taking on Loughborough’s fi rst XI with the hosts running out victor 2-1. The match wasn’t as free-fl owing as the fi rst one as Loughborough played a half-court press to eliminate Northwood’s pace and ball speed in attack.
However this could not stop the Knights, who, with goals from Chris Sarafi dis and Marco Dalle-Vedove saw the hosts clinch a well deserved 2-1 victory.
about pacing yourself. In South Africa we don't race those kinds of distances, the longest we race is between 10 and 12 kilometres, so it's going to be a really
good challenge. The technical race requires a beach start, then paddling around a succession of buoys typically set-out in a triangular, W or V shape. You do various loops around it, the turning is quite diffi cult, especially with 12 foot boards. They are very cumbersome to turn, imagine around 20 other competitors all trying to make the same turn and that throws in another degree of diffi culty. Ultimately both Lande and I want to make top 10 and just make Durban and the north proud,” she said.
Williamson, who is competing in the long distance and technical race has been on an incredible upward curve.
“I only started SUP about three years ago, so to get my fi rst SA call-up is just incredible. The most rewarding thing about this sport is you notice how far you've progressed. Every race you do, you get stronger and stronger. I'm hoping to use this world champs as a learning experience, it's going to be so exciting. If I can make top 10 that would be awesome. Jackie has been great, she always encouraging me and helping me on the more tactical aspects of the sport,” she said.
In order to raise funds for the world champs in Denmark, the KZN representatives will be hosting a fundraiser for the SA team. The event takes place on Thursda, 24 August at S43 on Station Road (5.30pm for 6pm). Entry costs R220 (burger, beer and raffl e ticket). You can pay via Zapper on the SUPDurbs website. Visit www.supdurbs.co.za and click on fundraiser. You can also contact me Lande on 082 697 6423 or email: [email protected].
