JMPD sergeant getsfour years for bribery

Roodepoort — A JMPD sergeant who headed the ‘10 plus’ rollout for Ward 86, allegedly has been arrested and sentenced to four years’ imprisonment after trying to solicit a bribe from a motorist.

Things went south though for the sergeant (name known to the Record) when the motorist turned out to be a member of the special crime unit, the Hawks.

The sergeant was prosecut-ed swiftly and is serving his sentence. Councillor for the ward, Steve Kotzé told the Record that thus far the ‘10 plus’ initiative has failed him and the residents of his ward. (The ‘10 plus’ initiative’s aim is to roll out 10 extra JMPD offi cers in every ward but so far its success has been questionable.)

“The JMPD ‘10 plus’ team was meant to focus on by-law enforce-ment in respective wards with one team per ward – a great concept until logistics and reality collid-ed,” says Kotze.

“Apart from taking eight months to meet with me as the ward councillor to roll out the plan for this unit to be fully inte-grated with the CPF and ratepay-er associations, a totally different picture emerged when we eventu-ally did get to meet.

“You probably only will see the ‘dedicated’ Ward 86 Metro Police vehicle for no more than 20 min-utes a day in your ward, I am be-ing told,” Kotzé says of his woes with the project.

“This was due to other duties this unit had to perform outside the ward, such as point duty at intersections and attending to ac-cidents – so much for the concept of a dedicated unit. Availability of vehicles for the JMPD 10 plus

project in respective wards com-pounded and confounded matters further.

“The original vehicle deploy-ment plan was to keep vehicles, which had reached replacement time (yet were still in fair condi-tion) for allocation to wards.

This was the case for a while at the start of the project but quickly slowed to a grinding halt,” says Kotzé.

“The present vehicle situation is that teams in two wards were sharing a vehicle.

‘‘Apart from not being able to do the rounds in two wards effi -ciently, fi ve people in a vehicle can be hazardous if it is attacked by gun fi re – a trending reality in our city of late.

“My view of the predicament of this project was to try and work with the sergeant as the team lead-er of this unit in my ward.

‘‘He gave me the assurance that matters for escalation could be given to him and would be dealt with. This did not happen even once in spite of a number of in-stances when I forwarded issues to him.

His superior in the Director’s offi ce was contacted at one stage and promised to intervene. This also did not happen.

“Senior management knows of the fraud and bribery that is com-monplace in the rank and fi le of Metro Police in the city – noting the exceptions of some good and dedicated offi cers – yet is incapa-ble of dealing with this issue.

“The political will of the ruling party seems to lack direction and capacity in getting this chaos dealt with and law and order back on course in our World-Class African City,” Kotzé bemoaned the situa-tion.

The Record is awaiting com-ment from JMPD.

Supermarket burnsWilro Park — Management of Pick n Pay Wilro Park took quite a fright when a fi re broke out in its archives room during the early hours of Fri-day 15 November writes CLINTON BOTHA. Although the supermarket suffered no damage, its storage room containing valuable documen-tation of more than six years is confi rmed to have been burnt.

No injuries were reported and Joburg EMS was quick to arrive on scene to contain the fi re, followed by the South African Police Service.

According to representative of Inkwe Securi-ty, “A frantic resident contacted the head offi ce and said that the supermarket was on fi re. At

our arrival at around 4am, we found that smoke was coming from the side of the building and we contacted the relevant authorities.”

Although low-spirited owing to the incident, the owner of Pick n Pay Wilro Park is grateful that the supermarket is still standing.

“Fortunately, the fi re was contained before it could spread further but at least six year’s docu-mentation including invoices, slips, and stock listings is gone.”

He added that business will go on as usual.“Thank God it did not spread into the store.

I thank everyone who assisted.”The cause of the fi re is still unknown.

Vlyt, vlyt dis verkiesingstyd!

tiwiteite.‘n Reuse slaggat in Crousrylaan is oornag

Dit lyk veral of open-bare probleme vinniger as gewoonlik aandag kry.

“Dit sal seker ook net tot en met die verkies-ing hou,” is die refrein wat die Record deesdae telkens moet aanhoor.

JRA-werkers herstel ‘n strook van Albertina Sisuluweg.

The storage room contained valuable documentation of the past six years.

Accident victim passes awayRoodepoort — The man, Omar Bomgaard (79) who was run over by a pizza take-away delivery motorcycle on 6 September passed away on 12 October.

According to his daughter, her father (who loved to walk) has been unconscious since the

accident took place in Discovery. He was in the Helen Joseph Hospital. She expressed her unhappiness with

the owner of the fast-food outlet who she says never enquired about her father’s wellbe-ing.

Political storm in a teacup at old age homeHelderkruin — A minor political furore broke out at Klein Helderkruin Old Age Home on the morning of 14 November writes RIAAN VAN ZYL.

The initial event, according to the Council-lor (DA) for the ward, Suzanne Clarke, was to bring South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) to the elderly who often have trouble visiting the offi ces in Roodepoort. (Allegedly one woman recently had to make seven trips before she was helped.)

Clarke was surprised on the morning to fi nd that the Minister of Arts and Culture, Paul Mashitile and MEC for Social Development and Agriculture, Nandi Mayathula-Khosa were the main attractions alongside ANC Councillor Willie van der Schyf who was billed as the programme director. (Mashitile ended up not attending).

“I have organised this for the elderly people. I am very involved here at Klein Helderkruin and the ANC has hijacked this initiative to gar-ner votes,” fumed Clarke.

“They are using this for electioneering. They will be sorry,” she warned.

In the meanwhile Mayathula-Khosa was waxing lyrical about the Department of So-

cial Services’ successes as far as the elderly is concerned and highlighted achievements and planned initiatives. She also accentuated older persons’ rights and congratulated Klein Helderkruin on complying with the Act on Older Persons.

Afterwards the residents gave her an enve-lope thanking her department for their 60 per cent contribution to the old age home.

When the Record asked Van der Schyf after-wards about the alleged ‘political hijacking’ of the event, he laughed it off.

“We have been planning this for over a month. You do not just get an MEC to attend over night.

I am involved in lots of initiatives for the el-derly,” said Van der Schyf.

A number of residents of the home did back up Clarke’s claim and one gentleman caused a slight interruption at the beginning of the pro-gramme when he stood up and demanded to know why the MEC was there when they were told by the Councillor that it would be an op-portunity to register with Sassa and solve their issues with its representatives.

One or two guests in ANC attire were seen leaving with the MEC.

Secrecy Bill passed regardlessof outstanding issues

Roodepoort — At approximately 5pm on 12 November the Protection of State Information Bill (or Secrecy Bill) was passed by parliament for the third time.

Members of the Right2Know (R2K) cam-paign have expressed their disappointment and labelled President Jacob Zuma’s referring the Bill back to parliament on the previous occa-sion as ‘delaying tactics’.

In a strongly worded statement R2K said that they have lost faith in parliament and were left with no alternative but to fi ght the matter in the Constitutional Court.According to R2K outstanding and unad-dressed issues are:• To ensure a full Public Interest Defence. The current Secrecy Bill only has narrow protection for whistle-blowers and public advocates that excludes a range of matters in the public inter-est, such as shady tendering practices or im-proper appointments within key state agencies• To ensure full whistle-blower protection. Un-der the current Secrecy Bill a whistle-blower, journalist or activist who discloses a classifi ed record with the purpose of revealing corrup-tion or other criminal activity may be prose-cuted under the “espionage” and other offences not covered by the proposed Public Interest Defence• Not to criminalise the public as spies. In terms of the current Secrecy Bill people can be charged with “espionage”, “receiving state information unlawfully” (to benefi t a foreign state), and “hostile activity” without proof that the accused intended to benefi t a foreign state or hostile group or prejudice the national se-curity; only that the accused knew or “ought reasonably to have known” that this would be a

“direct or indirect” result• To limit the Bill to the security agencies. The current Secrecy Bill still gives power to the Minister of State Security to transfer classifi ca-tion powers to other state bodies (and junior offi cials) without adequate public consultation• To include a Public Domain Defence. The current Secrecy Bill effectively criminalises the population at large. When classifi ed informa-tion becomes public it is no longer a secret. Rather than holding those who are accountable responsible for keeping secrets accountable, the current Bill punishes anyone who accesses in-formation once it has been leaked into the pub-lic domain• To reduce draconian sentences. The current Secrecy Bill still contains draconian sentences of up to 25 years in jail. These are out of line with international practice and will have a chill-ing effect on anyone in possession of informa-tion in the public interest• Not to undermine the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA). The procedure in the current Bill permitting applications for the declassifi cation of classifi ed information is in confl ict with the PAIA – despite commitments from Parliament to the contrary• To introduce an independent review panel. The body established to review classifi cation (a classifi cation review panel) is not independent enough and the simple possession of classifi ed information appears to be illegal, even pending a request for declassifi cation and access• To disclose apartheid records. Information that has been made secret in terms of old and potentially unconstitutional laws and policies will remain classifi ed under the current Secrecy Bill pending a review for which no time limit is set. This includes information classifi ed under the apartheid-era Protection of Information Act of 1982 and the government policy adopted in 1996, namely the Minimum Information Secu-rity Standards

Joey Bester (Senior Citizen’s Forum), Councillor Willie van der Schyf (ANC) and MEC for Social Development, Nandi Mayathula-Khosa.

Reduced summons for late wifeSampie Botha (email):Dear Mathilde Myburgh

After reading your article Nine fi nes for inno-cent motorist (59) (Record 25 October edition), I decided to contact you regarding something I wanted to forget about.

I sent your paper a note about this already, which you edited and published, but there has been a funny sequel. The JMPD had later re-plied with a reduced summons after my daugh-

ter had posted my late wife’s death certifi cate. The traffi c guys are really a weird bunch! This letter pertains to an earlier letter, pub-

lished in the Record, about a man who kept get-ting fi nes and summons from the JMPD on his wife’s name despite her passing. Her summons has been reduced only after his daughter went to the effort to post them a death certifi cate. Thank you for the notifi cation, Sampie! — Mathilde Myburgh, journalist.

Kritiek Aster — Rockjagter

Olivetti 45 — What does a typical night out, let’s say on a Friday, look like for this rockjagter As-tertjie?

I admit, I stole that term from the ever-inspir-ing (to me) Annie Klopper, famous rockjagter and the lady that literally wrote the book on one of my favourite Afrikaans rock bands. It’s one of those terms you wish you thought of fi rst, right? Her thesis keeps me up at night, I’m liter-ally studying Afrikaans music history from it to qualify myself for selling you this nonsense I’m typing right now. Just kidding, I read theses vir pret en plesier.

[Damn it, do I have permission to read that thing? I didn’t get it from a proper academic website by logging in ... I sort of just hunted it down on the internet. Sôrrie, Annie.]

Anyway, back to Friday night. It looks like a rough silence, or The Rough

Silence, whichever comes fi rst. I don’t know whether I had an awkward silence with my friends fi rst or whether I met the almost-cute duo fi rst. You’d think that journalist Astertjies get to enjoy Friday nights after very, very long weeks simply with friends and good music as a backdrop.

No, every hour is a journalist hour, my dear friend reminded me as she introduced me to the two, hoping I could write a profi le on her fa-vourite students. I took a few photographs, gave them my card (ooh!) and quickly wrote down the interview on a napkin before I sent them on their way. The awkward teens left with the big-gest smiles on their faces.

Kriek kriek is the best sound I can apply to the moments after. The music faded out. All of a sudden the entire night changed when a some-what unpopular friend showed up to hang out with me and her gaze met that of an arch enemy of hers [also my friend].

I just wanted to exit to go read that thesis in silence. However, I kept my cool and ignored their nonsense as we continued conversations about the fact that this crowd seems to get younger and younger, silly tattoos, homosexu-ality (“imagine if straight people had to come clean about being straight”), Sandton kids, the possibility of Greenside, new talent and type-writers.

An ex-band manager joined the conversation and I saw that as our cue to leave.

No Friday night comes easy ... Rockjagters all over, beware.

Distractions — Good or bad?Iegsaan Ally (email):Toddlers can be the most fascinating creatures to watch. They have an insatiable lust for life and use up all their energy until they literally fall over from exhaustion.

As cute as they are, they can also be very tir-ing to take care of. If you are a parent, older sibling or just an occasional babysitter, then you know exactly what I am talking about. Sometimes we have to devise clever plans to keep them occupied and also safe from any possible danger. As this bundle of joy ap-proaches a dangerous object, or some rough terrain, we quickly provide them with a toy, or some other form of entertainment to distract them. Mission accomplished. The interesting thing is that it’s not just the toddlers who get distracted, but also the teens. You are about to study for that big test when your favourite movie comes on tv. After the movie you fi nally get down to study when you need to “quickly” get updated on WhatsApp, facebook and twit-ter. After an hour of this you desperately need a break from “studying”! Adults are no better. The day you decide to be debt free, they deliver one of those home improvement magazines to your house and suddenly you need to renovate, or you are watching infomercials and you can’t believe that you still use a spaghetti mop. How could you live like this all these years!

I wonder if there are statistics available of students who almost obtained degrees and di-plomas, but didn’t owing to some distraction. What about artists who almost became famous but didn’t because of not enough practise or time dedicated to their art form.

There is one statistic I do know of, and that is that 10 per cent of the world’s population owns 86 per cent of the world’s wealth according to Global Wealth Report 2013 by Credit Suisse. In-teresting? In case you are wondering where you fi t in ... Let me make it easy. If you are reading this article in the paper, then you probably stay in the Roodepoort area. Get it? You are not one of the 10 per cent. In a way, the world treats us all like a group of toddlers. Every time you aspire to something great, there is some new thing that distracts you. It keeps you busy while your goals evade you. It’s quite easy for kids to watch television for two hours, but don’t expect them to study for that long. That’s asking too much!

Adults are worse. They complain about their job for years.

There is too much nepotism and you are worth more than what they pay you. Well, the nepo-tism you can sort out with the Human Resourc-es Department, and the fact is; we all are worth more than they pay us, it makes good business sense. It only takes a few years to improve your qualifi cations part time, then, you don’t need someone to “get you in”.

And the worse distraction of all: negativity!

454 hours of non-servicefrom Joburg WaterWitpoortjie — In Kommandeur Street, Wit-poortjie, resident Morné* has been waiting for service delivery for over 454 hours.

This follows a leak in or near his water me-ter that he has been reporting for the past few months. After each instance of disappoint-ing non-service, Morné attempts to fi x the problem himself and continues his everyday activities. Then the water pushes up and spills over onto his driveway again, and his struggle continues.

After reporting the latest leak that occurred, Morné has been waiting patiently for over 400 hours for Joburg Water to send repairmen out to assess the situation and mend it – until Tuesday 12 November when he realised his case was hopeless. He put up a sign outside his house explaining the water spillage.

“Moedeloos,” he wrote on the white board he put up, “waterleak reported 430 hours ago.”

“Hundreds in rands for phone calls.“Promises, promises, promises.”He reported his problem for the third time

on Friday 25 October.“I’ve spent hundreds of rands holding on

for 20 to 30 minutes each time I phoned to fi nd someone who can assist me.

“Whatever the leak is, it’s making the me-ter run extremely high. I’ve paid up to R1 500 more in utilities in a month’s time,” he told the Record, showing the bills to prove it. On Monday 11 November he once again called the Joburg Water number that is printed on the bill (011 375 5555), and fi nally demanded to speak to someone with some level of au-thority. “I ended up speaking to fl oor manag-er Themba Mokoena who promised me that before dusk, a vehicle would be sent to my house, even if he had to reroute its schedule for the day.

Update: Nocomment onFeatherbrooke stoningRuimsig — Both Featherbrooke Village and Monash South Africa have not been able to comment on an incident in which the centre al-legedly was stoned and vandalised by Monash students on Friday 8 November.

The Record previously reported that when staff arrived at the Featherbrooke Village on Saturday morning 9 November they found that window panes of the PNA store were broken and the property vandalised. The centre was damaged after an alleged altercation between Monash students and a bouncer at the Stones bar in Featherbrooke Village, which led the cen-tre to believe that the damage was caused by the students. PNA staff members refused to talk to the media and referred the Record to Broll, the company that manages the property.

Later Maya Stephens, property manager at Broll, was contacted for comment but declined, stating that their investigation is not complete.

“We are awaiting a report from the security company that works with Featherbrooke Vil-lage, thereafter a press release will be sent out.”

Another Broll agent promised that a press re-lease would be sent out on Wednesday morning 13 November.

One of Monash South Africa’s marketing and communication offi cers, Nomasiko Siban-da also declined to comment. Stating that she was not aware of the issues raised, she referred the Record to André Lubbe, the executive direc-tor of Advancement and Corporate Affairs. Also stating that he could not comment on be-half of the campus, he pointed out that Profes-sor Ron Weber, Pro-Vice Chancellor was “the offi cial campus spokesperson”.

The Record addressed an email to Professor Weber regarding various concerning incidents that either involved students or happened on campus, and is awaiting an offi cial response.

Resident Morné with his complaint board outside his house in Witpoortjie.

“It is now the next morning, and still no ser-vice delivery,” he complained to the Record at his residence on Tuesday 14 November.

“Mokoena made ridiculous statements, claiming, and I quote, that their ‘turnaround time is 48 hours’ and that he ‘understands we must save water’.”

The Record followed the same route by calling the general Joburg Water number and eventu-ally reached Matimba Nkuna, one of four op-erational managers. He confi rmed that the mat-

ter was escalated to the depot on Thursday 7 November.

“The team, including a plumber, was sup-posed to head out to his property on Friday 8 November but my system shows that it never happened.”

Nkuna was, however, not the manager in charge of this query and later referred the Re-cord to Jannie Kempenaar, who wasn’t avail-able for comment.

Monash cats: Another stray cat mutilatedRuimsig — The Monash South Africa campus has become a ha-ven for feral cats in the Ruimsig area, according to Jaco Booy-sen, operational manager at Residence 6 writes MATHILDE MYBURGH. The day before Monday night 11 November the Roodepoort SPCA was called out to the residence on to catch a fe-ral, allegedly cancerous cat called Snowy.

When inspector Kay Engelbre-cht fi nally got hold of Snowy, she found that the cat’s ear was cut off and that it was partly shaved. Some scarring indicated that her paws might have been tied.

“When I inspected the cat, the whole skin around the ear was off.”

Unfortunately, Snowy escaped her grip more than three times and fi nally got away, and Engel-brecht was asked to return the following morning.

Together with inspector Char-maine Joubert and the Record, Engelbrecht returned on Tuesday morning after a lot of blood and a potential sleeping spot were found. However, Snowy was no-where in sight.

The Record then approached Booysen for comment on both the current cat situation and a previous incident where a cat was tortured by students on campus.

He said that he was “so upset” when he heard what had hap-pened in the previous case, as was reported on in the Record and The Citizen.

“The students who live here are

so involved with these cats that they call me at night when the cats fi ght among themselves.

“No one living here would do something like that.”

Booysen’s interest with and re-sponsibility for the cats were evi-dent in his offi ce space – inside, cats were sleeping on mops and a couch, and bags of cat food were piled up in a corner.

Outside there were bowls with food and water. Booysen also told the SPCA that he had collaborat-ed with an organisation and that [most of] the cats had been steri-lised.

The SPCA is still looking for Snowy and Engelbrecht and Joubert are worried increasingly about cruelty on the campus.

“The problem is that if he Booysen does not stop feeding the cats, they will remain drawn to this haven,” Engelbrecht later said.

“More cats will come, they’ll keep breeding on the premises and we’re afraid that the cruelty will continue.”

To date Monash South Africa has not commented on the is-sue. The Record has approached both marketing and communica-tion offi cer Nomasiko Sibanda and executive director of Ad-vancement and Corporate Af-fairs André Lubbe, whose mutual statement was to the tune of “we cannot comment”.

Lubbe later said that “the only campus spokesperson is the Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor Ron Weber”.

Monash cats are given a “safe” haven, but cruelty continues.

Roodepoort SPCA inspector Charmaine Joubert looks for the muti-lated cat.

Young man knocked off his bicycle – diesRoodepoort — A young man died after suffer-ing severe injuries when he was knocked off his bicycle on Chert Avenue in Fleurhof on Wednesday evening 13 November.

ER24 paramedics arrived on scene to fi nd the local provincial services performing CPR on the badly injured man. It appeared that due to the impact, he had sustained severe injuries to his head and face. Paramedics continued to

perform CPR on the patient and the Advanced Life Support team took over care.

Sadly, despite all efforts by paramedics, the man’s condition did not improve and he was declared dead on scene.

The driver of the white Opel Astra that col-lided with the man on his bicycle, was not in-jured. Local JMPD offi cers attended the scene and will perform the necessary investigations.

17 injured as taxi rollsDelarey — A total of 17 people were injured after a minibus taxi rolled on Ontdekkers Road close to Mollie Road on the morning of Wednesday 13 November.

According to ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson, “A light motor vehicle was towing a trailer, which had an industrial roadside grass cutter on the back.

“It is believed that the grass cutter fell from the trailer just past Mollie Road on the bridge across the N1 highway in Delarey.

“The taxi apparently was hit by the grass cut-

ter. The taxi driver lost control of his taxi and it rolled onto its roof.

“Paramedics arrived on scene to fi nd that 17 people had been in the taxi at the time, and two of them, although in a stable condition, had suffered quite severe injuries in the form of broken bones and possible head injuries.

“All 17 patients were treated for their injuries on scene and transported to hospitals in the vi-cinity by ambulance.

“No one else was injured as a result of the collision.”

How to avoid blue-light gangsRoodepoort — With thugs pre-tending to be police and po-lice often acting like thugs, the public often is uneasy when they get pulled over, especially at night.

While it is a serious offence not to pull over, Justice Project South Africa (JPSA) and the Road Traf-fi c Management Corporation (RTMC) now have formalised a guideline to deal with the situa-tion should a motorist feel unsafe in such a situation.

This protocol is released as is – in the public interest and neither JPSA nor the RTMC can accept any liability whatsoever for any deviation from it by any person, the two organisations state in their disclaimer.• When indicating to the occupant/s of the vehicle follow-ing you that you wish to have them follow you to a place of safety, slow down and turn on your haz-ard lights and extend your right arm out of the window and with an outspread hand extended into the air with your forearm at 90 de-grees from your shoulder; gesture for them to follow you by moving your forearm forward and back to the upright, and repeat this action several times. • Drive at no more than 40km/h and proceed directly to the closest police station or public place with CCTV cameras.• Do not drive to your own or a friend’s home as this may endan-ger you and your loved ones if those following you are not genu-ine police.• If you have a cellphone with you, call 10111 and tell them that you are being followed and are proceeding to the closest police

station or public place. If you are not sure where the closest police station is, you can ask the 10111 operator.• If possible, provide the registra-tion number of the vehicle that is following you so it may be estab-lished if it is a legitimate police vehicle or not.• If you go to a police station, when you get there and if there are no police personnel in sight outside, hoot for as long as it takes for someone to come out.• Remain in your vehicle with the engine running, in gear and your windows wound up until such time as police from the station come out to you.• Cooperate fully with police per-sonnel from that police station and the offi cers from the vehicle that followed you and explain immediately that you felt intimi-dated and therefore proceeded di-rectly to the police station.• If you go to a service station, drive onto the forecourt (centre of the service station) where the pumps or the convenience shop are so you will be in full view of the cameras.• Cooperate fully with the offi c-ers from the vehicle that followed you and explain immediately that you felt intimidated and therefore proceeded directly to the service station.• No matter what, if you are shouted at, do not respond by shouting back. Also be careful not to respond to any potentially violent acts by resisting in any way or becoming violent yourself. Remain calm and respectful and explain.

Lightning: Why it is aforce of nature to fear

Roodepoort — “When thunder roars, go indoors.”

This is a worldwide warning by cli-matology authorities that you would want to take seriously.

After a recent event where a woman had to be taken to hospital after light-ning struck her house in Witpoortjie, the Record decided to take a look at why lightning is considered to be one of the scariest forces of nature.

Lightning in actual fact is so dan-gerous that if you can hear it, you are close enough to be killed by it, and simply by swinging a golf club, you can be a target. Considering that lightning is responsible for hundreds of deaths and extensive property dam-age around the world, one certainly should take cover.

Lighting is described in the English Dictionary for South Africa as “a fl ash of electricity between clouds or from a cloud to Earth during a storm, usually followed by thunder”.

According to the National Geo-graphic Society, one of the largest non-profi t scientifi c and educational institutions in the world, “The spark can reach over eight kilometres in length, raise the temperature of the air by as much as 27 700 degrees Celsius and contain a hundred million electri-cal volts”. Something bizzare that was discovered during the research is that the myths of ‘lightning never strikes the same place twice’ or ‘anything

containing rubber will protect you’ are considered hogwash. In other words, you cannot run or hide, but simply decrease your chances of becoming toast.

Some of the interesting myths and facts courtesy of the National Weather Service (www.lightningsafety.noaa.gov) are:• Myth: Lightning never strikes the same place twice. Fact: Lightning often strikes the same place repeatedly, especially if it’s a tall, pointy, isolated object. The Empire State Building is hit nearly 100 times a year.• Myth: Rubber tyres on a car protect you from lightning by insulating you from the ground. Fact: Most cars are safe from lightning, but it is the metal roof and metal sides that protect you, not the rubber tyres. When lightning strikes a vehicle, it goes through the metal frame, into the ground. Don’t lean against metal doors during a thunderstorm.• Myth: If outside in a thunderstorm, you should seek shelter under a tree to stay dry. Fact: Being under a tree is the second leading cause of lightning casualties. Bet-ter to get wet than fried.• Myth: If you are in a house, you are 100 per cent safe from lightning. Fact: A house is a safe place to be during a thun-derstorm as long as you avoid anything that conducts electricity. This means staying off corded phones, electrical ap-pliances, wires, TV cables, computers, plumbing, metal doors and windows.• Myth: Structures with metal, or metal on the body (jewellery, cellphones, mp3 players, watches) attract lightning. Fact: Height, pointy shape, and isolation are the dominant factors controlling where a lightning bolt will strike. The presence of metal makes absolutely no difference on

where lightning strikes. Mountains are made of stone but get struck by lightning many times a year. When lightning threatens, take proper pro-tective action immediately by seeking a safe shelter and don’t waste time re-moving metal. While metal does not attract lightning, it does conduct it so stay away from metal fences, rail-ing, bleachers, etc.• Myth: If trapped outside and light-ning is about to strike, I should lie fl at on the ground.

One has every reason to fear light-ning. The picture was taken from a fl at in Roodekrans during a recent storm.

The show will incorporate the Swiss Alm-glocken, a unique Swiss cowbell act. Christmas music will be the order of the day.

“DEM International has decided to tell the classic story with a bit of a twist this year,” said Frederik. All are welcome to attend the event and can contact organiser Frederik on 072 607 7320 for more information.

“Double rainbow aninteresting phenomenon”

Florida Lake — A local astronomer describes the double rainbow spotted at Florida Lake recently as a “very interesting phenomenon” writes CLINTON BOTHA.

On 12 November as the storm was brewing just before dark, canoeist and safety offi cer of the Florida Lake Canoe Club (FLCC) and photographer member of the West Rand Pho-tographic Society, Bertie Baard, took a shot of a double rainbow whilst attending a regular meeting at the boat clubhouse.

Local astronomer Kenny Nevill described the double rainbow as a “very interesting phenom-enon” that is well deserving of an explanation.

“The second rainbow in short is a mirrored refl ection in the raindrops of the primary rain-bow, therefore it is inverted.

“The photo clearly shows the red colours be-ing closest to each other.”

He added that Wikipedia gives an excellent explanation: “Secondary rainbows are caused by a double refl ection of sunlight inside the raindrops, and appear at an angle of 50–53°. As a result of the second refl ection, the colours of a secondary rainbow are inverted compared to the primary bow, with blue on the outside and red on the inside.

“The secondary rainbow is fainter than the primary because more light escapes from two refl ections compared to one and because the rainbow itself is spread over a greater area of the sky. The dark area of unlit sky lying be-tween the primary and secondary bows is called Alexander’s band, after Alexander of Aphro-

Be a leader with Florida ToastmastersFlorida — “You have the chance to develop your communication and leadership skills with the Florida Toastmasters Club,” believes Dawn Hemming, the club’s public relations offi cer.

“Globalisation has changed us into a com-pany that searches the world, not just to sell or to source but to fi nd intellectual capital – the world’s best talents and greatest ideas.

“Your greatest improvement will come from identifying your talents and strengthening them, which requires knowledge and skills.

“Toastmasters will provide you with the con-fi dence you need to get ahead.”

At their meeting on Tuesday 5 November Clive Goodman guided his audience through the entire home-buying process with his win-ning Best Prepared Speech entitled The Prop-erty Transfer Process.

“Anyone who has bought a property can tell you, buying and selling property is a minefi eld of contracts.

It requires planning, coolness and right rea-soning to ensure that everything goes smooth-ly.”

Guest speaker Etienne de Koker was declared the winner of the Best Impromptu Speech with his topic Why I cried at my best friend’s wedding.

“It is hard to be elbowed out when you’re reeling from the fi nale of a romantic relation-ship that you didn’t want to end,” he explained.

Division S Governer Gillian Trybus, who also attended, was declared the Best Evalua-tor of the night. Hemming says that to give a successful evaluation, the evaluator must be a quick-thinking, accurate, observant and sensi-tive listener.

Trybus resonated a proud club as she con-gratulated past president Tim Knights on the achievements of Florida Toastmasters, having been presented the Presidents Distinguished Club award for excellence last year. Dick Hallet was honoured for his two major achievements of being declared a Distinguished Toastmaster (the highest award a Toastmaster can achieve internationally) and receiving the Triple Crown title for having earned three major communica-tion and leadership awards within one Toast-masters year.

President Robert de Kramer accepted the award for Select Distinguished Area on behalf of Michael Glencross.

Residents are invited to visit the Florida Toastmasters every fi rst and third Tuesday of each month from 7.15pm at the Huguenot Res-taurant in Flora Centre at the corner of Con-rad Street and Ontdekkers Road. Admission is free. For further details, contact Cleone Carter-Smith on 082 415 2820 or President Robert de Kramer on 082 823 1387.

New nature and science initiative launchedKloofendal — City Parks in conjunction with the West Rand Astronomy Club and Roodepoort Rotary Club launched the planet walk at Kloofendal Nature Reserve on 9 No-vember.

The event kicked off at approximately 3pm and attendees (which included pupils) were taken on a guided tour of the solar system where planets were placed strategically all over the reserve.

At each ‘planet’ there was a guide who could give more facts about the specifi c planet. Pupils

also were treated to lunch packs, face painting and jumping castles.

This was followed by the offi cial opening cer-emony where Reserve Manager Bishop Ngob-eli and Anneas Balt from Roodepoort Rotary Club cut the ribbon.

The day was rounded off when the visitors were shown sun spots through the giant tel-escopes of the Astronomy Club.

Finally everyone was taken on a spider night walk where all kinds of creepy crawlies were investigated.

Horizon View — When a hard year’s trou-bles are left behind, South Africans do what they do best, enjoy endless hours swimming, braai’ing and having a good time in the sun.

At Ridd’s Aqua Centre they add to the fun by helping you to keep your pool sparkling and safe. Keep the pool free of germs and bac-teria that could cause ear aches and irritated eyes in children.

Another very important safety measure is to install a safety net! Accidents happen in sec-

onds and having a net will provide peace of mind, knowing that your children (and ani-mals) are safe ...

Ridd’s Aqua Centre does quick installations of nets that are easy to take off and put on. If you’re one of the lucky ones who will be going away for the December holidays, Radd’s solid PVC cover is the ideal product for you. With these covers installed, you can go away and rest assured that when you get back your pool will be in the same great condition that it was

when you left.Feel free to bring a sample of your pool wa-

ter to the store and they will assist you in get-ting the right chemical balance so your water stays clean and sparkling.

The staff at Ridd’s Aqua Centre wishes you and your loved ones a blessed Festive Season.

They are situated at Village@Horizon Shop-ping centre on Ontdekkers Road or can be contacted on 086 123 aqua(2782) or on 011 763 1130.

So here we are again ...

Inform your neighbours of your holiday plansRoodepoort — You might be on the beach, en-joying the hot sun and an ice-cold Savannah, but back home things could be different.

Just think, what if there is a criminal waiting to pounce?

Before leaving the house and taking to the road consider the following precautions:• Advise your security company if you are go-ing away and ensure that you supply all the necessary information regarding nearby key holders, in case of an emergency• Inform your neighbours of your holiday plans so that they can keep an eye on your property• Stop all newspaper deliveries and ask a friend

or neighbour to collect your post. A bulging post box is a dead giveaway that you are not at home• If hiring a house sitter, ensure that you teach them how to use your alarm correctly• Double check that you have locked and se-cured all windows and doors before leaving home• Ensure that all your outside locks are a mini-mum of four-lever locks or double-cylinder security locks• Never leave a key in the lock of an outer door that has glass panels or glass near the door lock• Having security gates fi tted on outer doors

is a highly effective security measure that gives you an extra line of defence• Sliding doors can be secured simply by plac-ing a piece of timber cut to size in the sliding rail. Make sure that sliding doors cannot be lifted vertically• Full fencing and sturdy gates are a good de-terrent• Have good exterior lighting, preferably on a timer• Do not leave tools like ladders or spades out-side, as they can be used to break into your house• Clear signage indicating that you have secu-rity also helps to discourage burglars

Runners get silly for prostate cancerHorison — On 8 November men from all over took part in the Dare Devil Run to raise awareness about prostate cancer.

This men’s-only race was com-pleted in red speedos.

On the night before though lo-cal club Golden Reef Road Run-ners showed their solidarity by organising a Not So Brave fun run and walk. All the members got together at 6pm and the rule was that they had to wear some-thing red and that those men who are not too shy would go bare-chested.“Our club is situated in the heart of Horison.

As a community running club we want to give back to the com-

munity as was the case with the Not So Brave Dare Devil Run. We organised the event to make everybody aware of prostate can-cer, as it is one of the leading cancers in males worldwide. It is the most prevalent cancer among white South African males. How-ever, recent statistics indicate that black males are at increased risk of prostate cancer and often de-velop an aggressive type of pros-tate cancer,” said Manette Keyter, the Chairperson of Golden Reef Road Runners.

The club is also proud of having launched their new website recent-ly and residents are invited to visit it at www.grrrunners.co.za.

22 November 2013 ROODEPOORT RECORD Page 29SPORT| www.roodepoortrecord.co.za

“Sterkman is nie ‘n stokperdjie of ‘n sport nie, dis ‘n leefstyl,” sê Frikkie.

World’s Strongest Man was.

Annesta by Motorsport Suid-Afrika Marshals Association aangesluit het.

“Ek was 21 dae in die inten-siewesorgeenheid nadat my rib-bes, altwee bene, heup en sleutel-been gebreek was.

I can’t help but smirk at the timing of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class’s launch. It comes but a month after Pravin Gordhan announced drastic budget cuts

across the board for all government bigwigs. No more extravagant parties, no government credit cards and car purchases are limited to something along the lines of a BMW 5 Series.

I know I shouldn’t feel happy at the various offi cials’ despair, but how can one not enjoy the irony? What makes it even better is the fact that I’m convinced some of them had already played with the online car confi gurator to fi nd the S-Class that best suits their own style. The S-Class is the ultimate symbol of wealth and status, after all.

I suppose I could help out a bit and write here that it’s a horribly overpriced bucket of bolts, but that would be the greatest lie ever told. Sorry gov-ernment bods, but the S-Class remains all the car one could ever want. In other words, it really is the best car in the world.

It’s also the last word in refi nement and luxury. As standard, you get all the obligatory features

you’d normally fi nd in other cars. It’s all in there - electrically adjustable heated and cooled leather seats with massaging function, DVD player with screens on the back of the front seats, navigation, the best infotainment system currently available in a car, which you operate via the biggest LCD display ever fi tted to anything with four wheels. Seriously, the guys from Pimp My Ride would take one glance inside the S-Class and say that it’s perfect. There’s nothing I can think of that’s missing.

Then you start playing with a couple of the non-traditional toys - the technology that will eventually siphon down to all models from all manufacturers in about 20 years.

The S-Class does not disappoint. Mercedes has taken safety technology to a new level entirely with something it’s calling Intelligent Drive. Unfortunate-ly, due to space constraints I can’t delve too deep into this, but suffi ce it to say that Mercedes is now at the forefront of autonomous driving technology and that the S-Class takes the world a few steps closer to building a true accident-impervious vehicle.

That part of the S-Class makes me want to start a career in tenderpreneuring so I can afford one eventually, but it’s the ride quality and overall refi ne-ment that makes me want to rob a bank so I can have one in my driveway tomorrow.

Think of the S-Class as a sensory deprivation tank on wheels and you’re about halfway there.

Nothing - and I really do mean nothing - is allowed to compromise the interior harmony. Engine noise is kept to the bare minimum and NVH levels are all but non-existent. You really can’t believe that the S-Class runs on the same basic internal combus-tion technology invented more than 100 year ago.

The ride quality is impeccable. It turns every road in South Africa into a magical stretch of tarmac without potholes or surface irregularities. Even though it’s bigger than the luxury barge it replaces, it seems to shrink around you when driving in an exuberant fashion. One might even call it nimble…

The best seat in the house, however, is in the back. Rear passengers are treated to sumptuous seats and a host of comfort features that do more than take the burden out of commuting. It is a deeply relaxing place to spend time, something I’m sure the government bods will be very sad to hear.

And while you might not mind spending time in the back, it’s nice to know that any one of the four

engines are more than powerful enough to get you to your next meeting with time to spare.

The range kicks off with the S350 BlueTEC turbo-diesel, which develops 190kW and 620Nm of torque. It’s also the most frugal car currently available in the range, with a claimed combined fi gure of 5.5 litres/100km.

Next up is the S400 Hybrid with a 225kW/370Nm petrol engine mated to a 20kW/250Nm electric motor. The brutal S500 follows with a biturbo V8 pushing out 335kW and 700Nm of torque. The hybrid is claimed to consume only 6.3 litres/100km, while the bigger V8 still impresses with a fi gure of 8.6 litres/100km.

If it’s excess you’re looking for, don’t bother with any of the above. There’s also the beastly S63 AMG with its massive 5.5-litre hand-built V8 that deliv-ers 430kW and 900Nm of torque. That’s enough to get this leviathan from zero to 100km/h in 4.4 seconds.

Mercedes can once again claim victory in the luxury barge contest. The ride quality, comfort and safety levels elevate it to a level that its competitors will only reach once they’ve replaced their current models. Mercedes has played its hand and now the rest will spend a few years catching up. That’s how good this car is.

The new S-Class comes standard with a Premi-umDive 6-year/100 000km maintenance plan with no customer contribution.

GERHARD HORN

IT’S DIFFICULT at fi rst to place the new Lexus ES. It’s about the same size as the GS, but retails for less than the IS. Is it just me, or does it sound like Lexus loading a shotgun and aiming it at its own right foot?

When you look at the Lexus range with the ES included, it doesn’t really stack up, but you need only drive it a few kilometres to know why it absolutely deserves a spot on showroom fl oors.

Think of it as a replacement for two models that used to be quite popular in South Africa. It’s a replacement for the previous-generation IS 250 as much as it’s a replacement for the long-gone-but-not-forgotten Camry.

That is, however, the last time I shall mention the ‘C’ word. I only make the comparison because the Camry (sorry, this really is the last time) immediately comes to mind when you fi rst see and drive the car.

It’s an honest proposition, this ES. It’s a large car with a lot of space, powered by a humble 2.5-litre four-pot mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox. It

was never going to set the world on fi re, but then I don’t think that was the idea behind it at all.

That much is clear from the styling. It’s not as striking as the IS or GS, but it’s beautiful in its own unassuming way. There are no vulgar get-out-of-my-way-slow-person design elements on the exterior, which means it’s undoubtedly a study in sophistica-tion. Only classy people need apply.

It’s more of the same to drive. The 2.5-litre deliv-ers a 135kW/235Nm punch, which Lexus says is enough to get it from zero to 100km/h in a smidgen under 10 seconds. A hybrid model is also available to order, but I’ll get back to you once it’s been down to the offi ce for testing. At the coast, the ES never felt underpowered, but then again I wasn’t really in a hurry to get anywhere.

You see, driving the ES hard felt rather uncivilised and uncouth. The ES aims to pamper rather than thrill and I really like that. Given the option, I’d choose luxury over sportiness every single time and the ES offers that in spades.

Out on the open road it’s a quiet companion, carrying us from one venue to the next in elegant,

stylish luxury. In a car like this, you let go of the urge to get where you’re going as soon as possible and rather spend the time enjoying the various luxuries on offer.

And you do get a lot of those. There’s only one model and it comes equipped with absolutely eve-rything, including leather seats (available in black and ivory), a smart infotainment system with all the necessary applications like Bluetooth connectivity and satellite navigation, eight-inch touch screen with Lexus’ mouse-like Remote Touch System, dual-zone climate control, parking sensors, electric and heated front seats, park distance control and a moonroof. Lexus won’t even charge you extra for metallic paint.

As it’s a family car, safety is of the utmost impor-tance. The ES’ standard safety fare includes stability control, traction control, ABS brakes, EBD, brake assist, Isofi x mounts and blind-spot monitoring with lane-change assist. On the passive side, you get 10 airbags and whiplash-reducing technology on the seats.

All things considered, I’d say the ES is a very

good car at a very good price. It offers a staggering amount of space and features. If Lexus launched this car at the beginning of April, I wouldn’t have believed them. I’m not sure how they wangled it, but this prestigious brand now offers a large luxury car with a decent, if somewhat old-school drivetrain and an extremely generous amount of standard kit at a price you’d pay for a mid-grade saloon from a segment below. If you think about it some more, it might even make more sense than a few SUVs out there…

As it currently stands, it competes in a class of one. It’s a little pricier than its Korean rivals and a lot less than similarly sized German saloons.

At fi rst it didn’t make sense to me, but now I understand it. Lexus is making luxury more acces-sible and who can blame it for that? At this point it’s anyone’s guess whether it’ll be a sales success, but if I had to put money on it, I wouldn’t bet against it.

The ES is retails for R435 900, is covered by a 4-year/100 000km warranty and comes as standard with the Lexus Distance Plan Plus main-tenance plan.

GERHARD HORN

‘EVERYTHING worth doing is worth overdoing.’ I don’t recall who uttered these famous words, but I totally understand what this person was on about. When it comes to certain things, good enough simply isn’t good enough.

You see, I recently had to help my sister move back home after four years in Potchefstroom. As her dorm room is no bigger than a decimal, there was no need to book a bakkie bigger than a Nissan NP200. But why, I wondered, would I do that if I could just as easily get my hands on the biggest, meanest bakkie out there, the Toyota Land Cruiser V8. It would be like taking a bazooka to a kettie fi ght, which is a war strategy that in theory sounds like there’s absolutely no room for failure.

My plan worked beautifully. The couple of boxes, bookshelf, loads of clothes and a fridge had zero effect on the performance of the Land Cruiser. Like a trusted donkey, he did an admi-

rable job of helping me win the title of Brother of the Year.

And yes, I refer to the Land Cruiser as a ‘he,’ because calling him ‘it’ would be an insult to a motoring institution. The Land Cruiser is a vehicle beloved by thousands of South Africans, so much so that it’s normally given a name and included in all the best and worst stories any given Land Cruiser-owning family has to offer.

Don’t believe me? I have an anecdote for that. I recently went to a friend’s wedding. The groom’s father is a rich Free State farmer with a fl eet of luxury vehicles, Hiluxes and one old, run-down Land Cruiser. When it came to choosing the wed-ding whip, guess what the family went for? In my life I’ve never seen anything so wrong, yet so com-pletely right, as the bride got off of the back of that Land Cruiser.

So there’s really not much to say about this car then. It’s a motoring legend that completely de-serves the status bestowed upon it by thousands of

adoring fans. Over the years, however, it has been revamped multiple times until we’re now blessed with the best of the breed.

As I said recently in this paper, it’s getting harder to hide a car’s age and nowhere is that more preva-lent than in a Land Cruiser. It’s so old school, it probably attended the same high school my ouma went to. The seats are way up in the clouds and the steering is as vague as a stoned graphic-design student.

It’s also a whale of a thing to drive around and above 120km/h there’s no point in having a ra-dio, because the road and wind noise completely drown it out.

So why would I give it a slot in my dream garage? In other cars, you want the unrefi ned engine noises and mechanical bits to be hidden underneath a veneer of sound deafening and carpet. In the Land Cruiser (and Land Rover Defender) you want the noise and vibrations. It’s part of the charm and reminds you that if you wanted, you could tackle

any mountain or forge that strike your fancy. This part of the Land Cruiser myth is defi nitely

true. It is probably the best off-road vehicle I’ve ever driven. On the launch of the revamped Cruiser a few months ago, one fell over (driver’s fault) and it was simply tipped back over so it could continue the journey. It had a few scratches, but I honestly think it did more damage to the mountain than the mountain did to it.

The main reason I’m writing about this car again is the engine. The Cruiser now comes with a V8 diesel engine that produces enough power to make this monster feel quite spritely. Its 151kW/430Nm output is 55kW and 145Nm more than the fa-mous 4.2-litre straight-six diesel that usually does service in the Land Cruiser.

It’s diffi cult to fi nd reasonable fault with the Land Cruiser. Yes, it’s not the most comfortable car around and it’s a bit rough around the edges, but the insane off-road ability and legendary toughness more than make up for it.

Basic ti ps to keep safe this holidayDECEMBER is a joyous time of year, a time to

celebrate the successes or to put the disappoint-ments to rest and to unwind and recharge for the year ahead. It’s also the time when people take to the roads en masse to go on holiday, visit fami-lies and get away from it all. So with all this extra volume on the roads, here are some basic tips to follow:

• Stay alert and awake on the road by taking regular breaks and ensuring you are well hydrated

• Signal your intentions early. This will allow other road users to take the necessary precautions and adjust their driving behavior.

• A safe following distance is key. By keeping a big-enough gap, you’ll be able to anticipate the moves of the person in front of you. If someone shows a penchant for weaving in and out of traffi c, fall back

|WESWESWESTTT | |PAPAPAGEGE GE 110 1 | 77WEEEEEEK 4K 4K 4777

and let the moving missile get out of your driving space. Also, don’t rely on the car ahead of you for all your driving cues. Look to see what cars further ahead are doing. If they’re braking, slow down.

• Don’t speed. Enjoy the journey instead by tak-ing in the beautiful countryside and sights. If you’re travelling with passengers and especially with small children, plan frequent stops for everyone to get some air, enjoy the scenery and blow off steam. It may take longer to get there, but when you do you’ll be relaxed and ready to roll.

Finally, before you start your journey, make sure that your car’s fl uids are all topped up, all hoses and belts are intact and properly attached and that your tyres and spa re tyre are in good shape and infl ated to the correct pressures. - Motoring Staff

Pajero conti nues SUV market assault

MITSUBISHI’S Pajero Sport 4x4 has been mak-ing strong strides in the South African market since its launch in September. Now the brand is trying to grab more of the local SUV market share by introducing its new derivative, the 4x2 model.

This well-equipped full-size SUV shares the same 2.5-litre turbo-diesel engine found in its 4x4 coun-terpart. The 131kW powerplant is also equipped with 350Nm of torque.

Chugging along, the Pajero Sport has more than enough power to go about its daily routine with ease, but the turbo lag low down the rev range does take some getting used to, particularly when trying to make a quick getaway.

The new engine offers a claimed fuel consump-tion of around 8.5 litres/100km.

With such a high demand for 4x2s in the SUV segment, it was only a matter of time before this vehicle made an appearance on the local scene.

Dressed in the same attire as the 4x4 deriva-tive, the 4x2 has full climate control, seven seats, dusk-sensing headlamps, fog lights and headlamp washers, to name but a few.

On the styling front, the facelifted Pajero Sport benefi ts from a new frontal styling, colour-coded door handles and mirrors along with macho-sized 17-inch alloys.

The Pajero Sport is a worthy competitor in its segment. Offering good value for money and high spec levels and safety features, this SUV will appeal to those who like to stay away from the mainstream like the Toyota Fortuner.

The Pajero Sport 4x2 retails for R419 900, which includes a 3-year/100 000km warranty and 5-year/90 000km service plan.

EMPTY HEADED ENGINEERING

Dear Editor,

Let’s look at Sanral’s performance from an engineering point of view.

Before the upgrade, traffi c backed up at most off-ramps. The bottlenecks were not actually in the ring roads, but at the off-ramps. This was obvious from the start, except for the uninformed at Sanral. When they experimented with the one fast lane, it should have been obvious that vehicles arrived faster at the bottleneck and had to queue. A simple analogy is that you don’t get better fl ow by attaching a bigger bottle to the same bottleneck.

The only way to get better fl ow is to increase the size of the bottleneck. Sanral has commit-ted the ultimate folly by creating a bigger bottle (more lanes) attached to the same bottleneck (off-ramps). The result is a marginal improve-ment at the Rivonia off-ramp, where some work was done. For the rest, nothing has changed during peak hours and all the money spent was fruitless. Just listen to the daily traffi c reports on radio. It’s the same as before: Gillooly’s features every day, as does William Nicol, 14th Avenue and Gordon.

What should have been done was to manage the off-ramp fl ow at peak times by installing

sensors, as in Germany, or put our metro police to better use to regulate the traffi c instead of the poorly set traffi c lights which cause further delays to the fl ow.

Money should then have been spent on the off-roads to improve the fl ow out of the off-ramps. One example is to widen William Nicol and synchronise the traffi c lights with sensors in the road. Heavy vehicles should travel out of peak periods given the poor maintenance by their owners, resulting in accidents and block-ages. Just a bit of good old-fashioned manage-ment and coordination between Johannesburg Metro and Sanral might have solved the problem at half the cost.

My question is: why should I pay for something that adds practically no value to the quality of driving in peak hours?

I also recommend that Sanral’s engineers and top management be trained in the theory of constraints and queuing theory before they waste public money again.

THE E-TAG YOU DON’T KNOW OF

Dear Editor,

I wish to refer to the article My e-tag meets my

Dear Editor,

I need to comment on government lies. I am not going to say ‘e-toll,’ as this is really a tiny word which covers a lot of scope. All I want to address is Sanral’s new marketing campaign, which is meant to convince us that ‘user pays’ is the fairest system.

So let’s look at a person who does not own a car and uses a combination of foot, bicycle, and public transport to get around. We will call him John. John will not be affected by e-toll, as buses and taxis are exempt. What rubbish. This is a blatant lie! When John goes to the shop for food he will pay for e-toll, as every item in that shop will have travelled on our roads. And John must not think the suppliers or retailers will absorb those costs; they will pass them on to the consumer.

If John wants to buy a new house? Yes, he will pay e-toll as every brick in his new house has also travelled on our highways, possibly more than once. The labourers who built that house were also transported to site on a highway. Who paid those e-tolls? John did. And to top it all, our government was in a generous mood, so they contributed R6 billion towards the roads.

No they didn’t. They returned R6 billion of our tax money towards the roads, which we have paid for several times over through the national budget and through the fuel levy.

THE GOVERNMENT’S UMPTEEN LIES

FIND OUT IF YOU ARE A GOOD DRIVER

So what is fair about a system that is going to charge us to use something we already own, again and again, until our economy is sucked dry? And all the people outside Gauteng who think this is only going to impact Gauteng? Wake up. Gauteng is the source of over 40% of government taxes. Once the golden goose is dead, where do you think they will go for more money?

Richard Walsh

mighty wrath in week 45’s issue. According to the writer, it appears that he became

aware that his newly purchased car was fi tted with an e-tag only once it beeped when he had driven on the freeway.

This raises certain disturbing questions.Did the dealer fi t an e-tag without the permission

of the purchaser and failed to inform him of such action? Was the cost of the e-tag added to the purchase price of the vehicle?

If this is so, how many unsuspecting customers are being duped into buying cars fi tted with e-tags that they do not want, considering the resistance to the tolling of our freeways. Is this practice common among car dealers? If so, on whose authority do they have to do so?

If my interpretation of what was written is correct or factual, it could have serious consequences for the motoring public of Gauteng.

Peter Pearse

Dear Editor,

There is only one reason for our high road-death toll. No driver respects our road laws and this would be proved if every driver was to answer the following questionnaire truthfully.

I have been driving for 50-plus years, during which time I have had one accident, therefore I feel I can consider myself a fairly good driver, but not if anyone studies my answers, which are in brackets.

• Do you always come to a full stop at a stop street or give way at a right-of-way sign? (No)

• Have you ever raced through an amber or even a red light at a robot? (Yes)

• Have you ever changed lanes or turned a corner without indicating? (No)

• Have you ever turned left or right from a go-straight lane? (No)

• Do you drive up the backside of the car in front of you? (Sometimes)

• Do you exceed the speed limit in built-up areas, especially where children are around? (No)

• Do you use your cell phone, shave, put on make-up or read the paper while driving? (Never)

• Do you pull out in front of oncoming traffi c? (No) • When you go into a shopping centre that has

a roundabout with arrows pointing left only, do you go right and pinch a parking from a motorist who has kept to the rule? (No)

• Do you have the patience to handle the big-city traffi c? (Only sometimes)

• Do you overtake on solid white lines? (No)

somewhere as effi ciently as possible, so why do some feel they are more important than others that they can skip robots and push in.

At this time of year, we are all at our wits’ end and just trying to get to the end of the year with as little stress as possible. So let’s try to be kind to one other and struggle through traffi c together, because let’s face it, it’s only going to get worse.

We want to read what’s the strangest thing you’ve seen someone do in traffi c. Send your com-ments to editor@ autodealer.co.za

Our daily jam-packed congested livesOur daily jam-packed congested lives

What we need is smarter mobility and other options for commuters if we ever want to tackle the conges-tion issue.

STUART MOIR

•ad

At this stage of the year, I’m sure - if many of you are like me - you’ve been spending your mornings in traffi c wondering two things: will the holidays ever come and when did the roads start getting so congested?

I say this because I seem to be spending more and more time behind the wheel of a car listening to the engine idling along. It’s sort of become the theme tune of my life. Rather depressing you might think, but it’s certainly worrying that the once-quiet back roads I used to wiz through to get to work have become so heavily congested. I can only imagine how the main roads must look.

Navigation company TomTom recently released research fi gures that showed commuters from around the world would spend around eight working days stuck in traffi c each year.

Now I don’t know about you, but I would rather be spending my time with family or friends rather than humming along to an over-played song on the radio and having to fi ght off taxies.

Thankfully, South Africa isn’t as bad as some parts of the world and commuters would only end up spending around 3.5 days a year in traffi c.

It’s not diffi cult to guess which city is the most congested in South Africa, with Johannesburg tak-ing the top spot. In second place is the Mother City

while Durban was ranked sixth, but it did have the country’s biggest increase in traffi c congestion.

We know one of the biggest issues is the lack of public transport and people jokingly comment that once e-toll is implemented, congestion will just simply stop. After all, faster travelling times are what Sanral’s promising.

I’m sure the Sanral debate will rage on for years and the truth is that we can keep upgrading and building bigger roads, but these too will become congested. What we need is smarter mobility and other options for commuters if we ever want to tackle the congestion issue.

Of course, with increased time in traffi c, drivers are becoming more distracted. I’ve witnessed everything from people shaving to applying their make-up in rush-hour traffi c.

I don’t know what’s more worrying: the fact that people don’t have time in the morning to complete their personal grooming rituals before leaving for work or that they have no shame doing it in front of other people.

I’m a big fan of peoplewatching and these last few weeks have certainly been the most bizarre. I’ve seen everything, from the common chatting and texting on cell phones to people devouring meals as though it were their last. But the strangest thing I witnessed was a woman breastfeeding her child while behind the wheel.

She was obviously on the morning school run - or should I say crèche run - when she had to ‘do the deed’. As shocked as I was, I couldn’t help but think that when it’s feeding time, it’s feeding time. There was nowhere to go, she couldn’t exactly head down to the nearest petrol station or pull over, because we were at a standstill.

I’ve read several websites on how to avoid contrib-uting to traffi c congestion and they all offer similar advice. The big one is taking public transport, but that’s relatively impossible for most South Africans. The other common ones include planning ahead and driving courteously.

The latter is probably something all South Africans

need to work on, as we are an aggressive bunch. Every other day you hear about road-rage incidents or read in the paper how someone was dragged out their vehicle and beaten for a silly mistake.

Admittedly, I can relate to aggressive road behav-iour at times. Imagine having some idiot push in front of you every morning only to stop a few metres down the road to drop commuters off. Even the calmest person has a breaking point and that’s why it’s so important that we treat one another with respect on the roads. We are all trying to get
