The Soweto Animal Rescue and Advisory Centre (SARAC), a non-profi t organisation tasked with the care of animals, is in need of assistance.

The organisation was founded by Jerry Selwane in October 2010 and survives solely on charitable donations from individuals and organisations.

SARAC recently opened a charity shop, at Shop 6 on the corner of Bellavista and Johanna streets, Bellavista.

"We would like to appeal to everyone to donate any unused items in your home - old electrical equipment, clothing, shoes, curtains, bedding and any bric-a-brac," said Annemarie da Silva, of SARAC.

Donations can be dropped off at the shop or phone 084 911 9459 to arrange for collection. "Kindly extend this request to your family, neighbours, colleagues and friends," adds da Silva.

All proceeds will go towards the sterilisation, feeding and caring for of all the rescued animals at SARAC, which is situated at 595 Bennett Street, Zuurbekom, Westonaria, as well as animal care education in Soweto and surrounding suburbs.

For more information, visit their website, www.sarac.co.za, contact Jerry on 084 911 9459 or email [email protected].

COTLANDS has scooped the 2017 South African Early Childhood Development Award for its innovative Non-Centre based Early Learning Play Group (ELPG) programme - the awards ceremony was held on Thursday, February 23, in Ekurhuleni.

The ELPG programme is one of Cotlands’ innovative play-based early learning programmes, alongside toy libraries and mobile toy libraries, which are designed to give access to essential development opportunities

to children in disadvantaged communities who are not in day-care centres.

Cotlands Chief Executive Offi cer Jackie Schoeman said the organisation welcomed the recognition "with lots of gratitude".

“To us, this means our non-centre play-based programmes are a step in the right direction to give marginalised children access to ECD opportunities that they need for their skills development in language, mathematics and problem-solving, among others,” she

said.Schoeman also pointed out

that one of Cotlands’ Early Learning Facilitators, Willow Mdlani, made it to the top 10 in the Practitioner of the Year 2017 category, which had a massive 2 000 entries.

“Congratulations to Willow Mdlani, who made us very proud. We wish to express our appreciation to the National Development Agency and its partners for the recognition of our nation-building efforts through making ECD opportunities accessible for all children,” Schoeman said.

St Mary’s cottage revamped by MFCANOTHER cottage at St Mary’s Children’s Home was handed over to Sonja Harmse (director of the home) on March 1, by staff from MFC (Motor Finance Corporation, Division of Nedbank).

This brings the total of cottages which MFC has undertaken to refurbish to four (St Anne’s, Cynthia Green, Keith Davies and latterly St Francis). MFC was also responsible for the revamping of the medical quarters, new carports and supplying the jungle gym for the gardens.

Heinie Klee (Head of Corporate Social Investment at MFC) welcomed the guests to the offi cial handover of the newly revamped cottage, St Francis, and said there is one more to revamp later this year - St Margaret’s. “Sonja and her team are doing a stunning job here at St Mary’s and all the children are dear to us. It’s been an absolute pleasure helping the home and making the children’s lives more comfortable and we hope to carry on assisting here.”

Receiving the cottage on behalf of St Mary's, Sonja said, “Heinie is so humble about helping St Mary’s. Thanks

to MFC for making this a home and not an institution. Years ago, before MFC came on board, the children never wanted to bring friends home because of their surroundings, but now they do. The more lovely the surroundings, the more they’ll strive to do well in life themselves. We try our very best to make it a home and to all my staff, a huge thank you. With God’s grace our children are doing very well. We have a waiting list for St Mary’s and once the next cottage is ready we’ll be able to take more children.”

She went on to say, “I’ve never met a man quite like Heinie. He knows each and every one of our children and his heart is so big. The way he interacts with us all is so special and we pray Heinie will get to stay on with MFC, as retirement looms for him. He’s so much a part of our family.”

Advocate Mancha Manaka (chairman of St Mary’s Board) added, “This is a beautiful home. Here our children know they are safe and can grow up being loved and cared for. Thank you to Sonja and the staff who keep this home

running.” He ended in prayer.Head of Risk at MFC,

Charles Mavimbela, said, “I’d like to acknowledge Sonja and her team, and to

all my colleagues who make projects like this happen, a huge thanks. Heinie, you have done so much for St Mary’s and I’ve so much thankfulness

in my heart. As St Mary’s is a family, so is MFC. Generally banks are not known for their generosity, but through Heinie we have come to share our

love for St Mary’s. He guides us and shows us the way. We have a big team behind us and we hope to continue to be part of this home for many years.”

THRILLED: Heinie Klee, Charles Mavimbela, Mancha Manaka and Sonja Harmse at the cottage handover.

ACCORDING to Tidimalo M Chuene, marketing and communications manager at Johannesburg Water, there will be overnight water restrictions to areas around Deep South, Soweto, Central, Midrand, Sandton and Randburg. This is prompted by a need to curb water usage on some of the reservoir sites that are experiencing high consumption.

Joburg Water increased bulk supply on February 16 and 17, 2017 and contacted the depot to investigate their fi ndings.

“Pressure lost at night is most likely from the water supply restrictions that we are implementing at various areas that are not achieving the 15 per cent reduction in demand,” said Chuene.

The intention is to reduce escalating water consumption since the announcement of water restrictions by the Department of Water and Sanitation. Johannesburg is still under level two water restrictions despite the recent rainfall. Water levels at the Integrated Vaal River system have not risen suffi ciently.

“Technicians will be closing outlet valves of these reservoirs

as listed on the attached plan between 20:00 and 04:00, resulting in no water supply at all during these times. This is a method that we have successfully used to stabilise supply in areas around Lenasia, Northcliff, Fairlands and Blackheath, which were struggling with supply in November 2016. One other factor that contributed to our success in these areas is consumers who have since reduced their consumption signifi cantly,” read the statement.

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department is still monitoring wasteful water use and has thus far issued a total of 665 fi nes to consumers found contravening the Water Services By-law. Consumers are urged to continue reporting non-compliance by phoning the JMPD 24/7 line: 011 758 9650.

Johannesburg Water thanks all residents and visitors to the city who have heeded the call to save water; however we need to do more to reduce supply shortages.

EIGHT passengers died and four were critically injured after a taxi carrying 17 passengers crashed into a concrete bus shelter on the R82 in Walkerville, at about 05:00, on Thursday, March 2.

One of the injured passengers later died in hospital.

According to an eyewitness, the accident happened after the driver of the taxi attempted to overtake another vehicle but saw an oncoming car, swerved out of the way and hit the bus shelter, overturning the taxi.

Emergency vehicles rushed to the scene of the accident.

Captain Kay Makhubele said: “The taxi was travelling from Vereeniging towards Johannesburg

and it appears the taxi driver lost control and crashed into the bus shelter. The taxi overturned, fl inging some of the passengers onto the road.

Eight people were certifi ed dead on the scene and the critically injured were taken to hospitals in the area. The driver survived the horrifi c crash. We are investigating a case of culpable homicide. This is a terrible tragedy.”

The one side of the road remained closed for a number of hours while the bodies were removed.

Members of Walkerville’s Community Policing Forum were also on the scene to help direct the fl ow of traffi c.

SHELDON Spear, a Grade Seven learner at Curro Waterstone College, donated books to Suidheuwels Primary School’s library on Saturday, February 25.

He started Need2Read in August 2014 as he wanted to give books to needy schools. When he read the article in the Southern COURIER two weeks ago, he knew he could help.

Sheldon was shocked to hear that the library has stood empty for over 30 years.

"I was so happy to see the excitement on the children's faces when we brought the books. We will continue to deliver books to Suidheuwels Primary School until the shelves are full," he said.

There were excited learners at the school on the day and they started sorting the books on the desks in the library.

Kumari Jackson, a teacher at the school and coordinator of the

project, said they are so grateful that Need2Read donated the books to their library.

“The books are in good condition and we are sorting them out. Hopefully they will fi ll half of the library. We are still waiting for others who promised to bring books. Thank you to all who heeded the call,” she said.

Need2Read’s motto is, "Sharing the love of reading". They collect good-quality children's reading and reference books. Follow the Need2Read Facebook page and contact Sheldon if you have books to donate.

The school is situated at 45 Quantock Road, South Hills, and they can be contacted on 011 613 3977.

Businesses open and businesses close, but nowadays it seems more are closing down.

Not being a huge TV fan, I don’t have DSTV, but I do enjoy watching a good movie every now and then and was a customer at Dial-A-Video in Glenvista Shopping Centre.

It came as a huge surprise when I popped in last week to choose a DVD and was told by the ladies who have worked there for years that the shop was closing down. Apparently the lease was due to expire and the shop owner didn’t want to take out the ‘new’ required three-year lease. It had become quite a social place to meet and greet other regular customers and often we’d give each other our thoughts on movies we’d seen. As other customers came in to see what was actually happening,

most of us had received an SMS informing us about the closure. It was really sad as everyone said their goodbyes to the staff members. The end of an era!

There are also other empty business premises in the same centre. Is it due to the economic climate, where customers don’t have as much money as they did and don’t eat out as often or shop in general unless for necessities?

Another business which has just closed its doors is Blacksteer in Panorama Shopping Centre. I wasn’t a regular customer, but I’m sure they’ll be missed by those who were.

Other shopping centres have empty stores waiting to be fi lled too. I do know from speaking to a friend of mine that the rents in centres are extremely expensive and to make a profi t, after rent, they have to be tops at what they

do. We can only hope times will get better. Bouquets of the WeekTo Dr Combrink at Netcare Mulbarton Hospital, who was on duty on Thursday morning, March 2, a huge thanks for being so caring to my friend, who is here on holiday from England. Dr Combrink showed compassion and care and made my friend feel safe in her hands. Thank you.

* Wally Moiter from Ridgeway Ext 5 said he had a fantastic experience when he went to renew his driver's licence at Xavier Junction Testing Centre, 5 Rente Street, Ormonde. “On Tuesday, February 28, I went along to renew my driver’s licence. I was expecting long queues and thought I’d be there for a long time. Much to my delight, I was in and out within half an hour. The staff were friendly, effi cient and helpful. It was such a pleasant experience and I was actually shocked at how wonderful it all was.” Phone 011 496 1960.

That’s it for this week. Shop till you drop – if you can afford it!Julie

Promising to bring changeWhen I was elected as the councillor of this diverse ward, I knew that a big challenge lay ahead and after almost six months in offi ce I now realise that it is a mammoth task that lies ahead!ProtestsIt has been an interesting month where we have seen two protests take place in Rosettenville, which was almost like our own Arab Spring. While I can never condone any form of violence, I also realised that residents are frustrated as the area has been degenerating for many years. While the protests were taking place, I contacted Mayor Herman Mashaba and he came through to inspect the area together with MMC for Safety Michael Sun and the MMC for Region F, Funzi Ngobeni, and myself, as the ward councillor.

The tour of the area made the mayor realise that this community needs to have specifi c intervention. This resulted in a raid which he personally attended, together with the MMCs and myself, and a public meeting was held at Rosettenville Primary School. This also resulted in more police being deployed to the area and a multi-party committee being formed to map the way forward in the ward. The establishment of a by-law court should also assist us in combating prostitution, as it will enable us to get the ladies off the streets on the basis of loitering. HealthIn terms of health care, the Rosettenville Clinic became a competent site in December

which enabled them to screen more people for HIV, including MSM patients. One of the biggest challenges our clinic faces is the fact that they have lost a number of staff members recently, and they always have a high volume of patients. I have a meeting with the clinic committee once a month. With regards to the South Rand Hospital, it is a provincial hospital, but I am going to be visiting it on Monday, together with Manny de Freitas and the shadow MEC for health, Jack Bloom.ClubsTaverns and clubs have been very problematic in the ward, especially in terms of noise pollution, and the state they leave the surrounding areas in. To combat this, we have been working with environmental health to measure the decibels of the noise. I have also organised a number of raids on these clubs with different stakeholders, such as JMPD, SAPS, some CPF patrollers, the department of environmental health, and the EMS. One of the most controversial clubs in the ward, Temptations, has had its consent use taken away and the city has applied to the high court to have it shut down permanently.Illegal structuresAnother contentious issue is illegal structures being built in properties. I have been working very closely with building control on these issues and the mayor has committed to the city to employ more building inspectors. MMC Funzi Ngobeni is also taking this

issue very seriously. This also indirectly becomes a SARS issue, as the property owners often charge rent for these back rooms but do not declare it as income tax. Therefore, SARS needs to do an investigation of their own into these properties.Council propertiesWe have also identifi ed that the city-owned halls and recreation centres need to be put to better use in our ward. I know that JPC wants to put most of the leases out to tender, but we really need to make sure that they are utilised for the community’s benefi t and are not used for taverns or clubs, as we can be seen at the former Townsview Bowling Club. GrassI know that one of the most contentious issues is the cutting of grass in the parks and on the sidewalks. I realise that long grass is not only an eyesore, but is also a huge security risk, as muggers and hijackers are able to hide in the grass and stolen goods are also hidden in the grass. I also realise that it forces pedestrians to walk in the roads and prevents people from seeing open manholes. The reason why we have been battling to get the grass cut is due to current budget constraints. The grass cutting also currently falls under three different departments which sometimes results in buck passing. Recently, we also approved a budget which, once it comes into effect, will enable grass to be cut regularly and potholes should be able to be fi lled within 24 hours.WARD 56 councillor Michael Crichton (083 383 6366).

We would like to thank the Mondeor Police for their prompt and gentle assistance when my sister suffered a

nervous relapse and locked herself in her fl at on February 23, out of fear. They also assisted to get her safely into

the car and we then admitted her to Helen Joseph Hospital. The Naude family, Glenvista

Thank you, Mondeor Police

NEW LEADERS: Maxwell Nkosi, Muhammed Kasoojee, Matsobane Sekhu, Clr Hilton Masera, Zama Ngwenya, Michael Birrell, Clr Sergio dos Santos, Fatima dos Santos, Lee-Ann Scholtz and Alfred Mkendlana.

New DA ward 54 teamTHE Democratic Alliance (DA) ward 54 Klipriviersberg branch recently held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) to elect new offi ce bearers to lead the team towards the 2019 elections.

Newly elected branch chairperson Fatima dos Santos said: “I look forward to working with the new team and growing our support, not just in the ward but throughout Joburg, and helping the DA to win Gauteng come 2019.”

Ward councillor Sergio dos Santos congratulated the newly elected

members. “This team will be the team that will take us towards achieving our goals. We need to show our people that we care and that we will bring change, especially in the City of Joburg, where we just recently won.” He further thanked the presiding offi cer, Clr Hilton Masera, for honouring them with his presence and presiding over the AGM.

The night was bitter sweet though. Clr Reuben Masango, the outgoing branch chairman who was elected as a PR councillor in the 2016 elections, will be leaving the branch to lead his

own branch.Dos Santos said she wishes Masango

the best of luck and thanked him for all that he had done during the election campaign. “I am extremely happy that Reuben became a councillor but very sad that he will be leaving. He was my right hand man during the campaign and I don’t know what I would have done without him.”

Manny de Freitas, MP, unfortunately, could not attend due to parliamentary obligations but he had wished all members the best of luck.

SORRY to say it, ladies, but you missed out on a fun-fi lled evening and the opportunity to see Hugh Jackman in action. This one went to the men - and the Guys Night Out at Nu Metro the Glen sure was a great evening. On their arrival, the guests were welcomed by the Nu Metro staff at the ticket entrance. They were then directed to the bar area, where they received refreshments and relaxed in the luxury bar lounge. After this they were taken to the Nu Metro Scene VIP theatre.

But it was not time for the movie yet. Thirteen of the seat numbers had been pre-selected for a lucky draw, and the winners had to be announced. Prizes ranged from vouchers for Sorbet and Nu Metro to containers of protein shakes, T-shirts and cases of beer. Once a guy’s seat number had been called, the occupant would come to the front to receive his prize.

Alcoholic prizes, however, were collected after the movie from the Nu

Metro offi ce.And then it was movie time, when the

men sat back and got into the action of

the recently released Logan (Wolverine) movie, and continued to enjoy their refreshments.

Guys Night Out at the movies

BACK by popular demand, one of South Africa’s most acclaimed and outspoken comedians, John Vlismas, is bringing his sold-out show of 2016, Revelations 2: The Good Racist, to the Lyric, at Gold Reef City.

Live for two nights only, Friday, March 10, and Saturday, March 11, Johannesburg audiences will come face to face with some of the uncomfortable truths of our society as the award-winning comic pulls no punches – the way only Vlismas can.

Revelations 2: The Good Racist, sees Vlismas at his most frank, and arguably his best. Far removed from your typical “ha-ha” jokes, the show leaves the audience with many “a-ha” moments as they are forced to ponder on issues such as the Voortrekkers, Mahatma Gandhi, Shaka and Mugabe.

“We tend to rely on ‘Chappie paper’ facts whenever we attack each other. Maybe our common enemy is ignorance?” says Vlismas, who spent nine months doing research for this show, and read over a dozen books as reference. “Whichever way you look at it, we have come a long way as a country – whether we’re heading in the right direction is up for debate,” he said

“It gives us the greatest pleasure to bring our guests the very best in live entertainment. Revelations 2: The Good Racist, is as hard-hitting as it is funny, and is defi nitely not to be missed.

Those who want to trace the modern South African back to our forefathers, leaving no stone (or man) unturned, will not be disappointed by this genius show.

It is as intelligent as it is brilliantly funny and brutally honest, and will leave you with much to think about for months to come,” said Gareth

Kaschula, Gold Reef City Marketing Manager. For more info and tickets, visit www.

goldreefcity.co.za. Doors open at 20:00, and the show starts at 20:30.

Comaro ChronicleSport8 March, 2017 19

Kontak die kantoor by 011 975 2822 of [email protected].

Couple makes history on bowling greensHISTORY was recently made on the bowling greens at Reading Country Club when a husband-and-wife team walked away with the Open Singles Men and Women Championship titles.

Wim van Gils (73) and his wife Ursula (66) won the championships towards the end of 2016 and in doing so became only the second married couple in the 78-year history of Reading to have achieved this.

In 1982 Charlie and Rose Russak were the happy couple who walked away with these coveted titles.

Talking to the Van Gils, it soon becomes apparent that not only do they love their bowls, but they also cherish the club, its members and the camaraderie

they experience on the bowling greens and in the clubhouse.

“This must be one of the friendliest clubs in the whole of Gauteng. We’ve been members here for 21 years and have absolutely no intention of ever moving to another club,” they declare.

The Van Gils used to stay just across the road from the club in New Redruth, but fi ve years ago they packed up their home and moved to the Alberton Retirement Village.

Wim, who before retirement was head of the South African Press Association, has won the Open Men’s Championships a whopping seven times, while for Ursula it was a fi rst.

Off the bowling greens, the Van Gils enjoy a game of bridge and travelling throughout South Africa. They also love watching sport, such as cricket and tennis.

Will they ever retire from bowls? “Not a chance,” they say.

MAKING HISTORY: Wim and Ursula van Gils, Reading Bowling Club’s 2016 champions.

A-SQUARE-Forklift Alberton rugby club opened up their rugby season playing the fi rst friendly match against Harlequins rugby club on Saturday, February 25, in Pretoria.

The local team from Alberton struggled to get going but managed a comfortable 20-6 victory at the end of the game.

Harlequins started out strong and quickly jumped to a 6-0 lead. But after some stern words from captain BB Hefer, the Alberton side started to play their style of rugby.

The forwards laid a great platform from loose play and the scrums. Harlequins tall timber made it exceptionally diffi cult at line-out time. Late in the fi rst half, live-wire scrumhalf Donovan Putter ran a lateral line with debutant Brian Thysse straitening up to go over for the fi rst of three tries.

The Alberton lads went into the shed with an 8-6 lead compliments of the boot of Henry Payne.

In the second half the Alberton forwards

dominated up front, but the backs failed to show their real class due to poor weather conditions. A well-worked forward effort saw Benna Lotter go over for his fi rst try of the season.

Coach Wayne Williams made a couple of changes halfway through the second half and his decision bore fruit when Theuns van der Merwe burst through a half-gap and offl oading to yet another debutant in Caltino Jones. Jones had plenty of work to do and chipped the ball past the defence and turned on the pace to go over the whitewash.

The next friendly match will be played on March 11 at Alberton rugby club.

The result ended up in a 20-6 victory for the Alberton side.

The other results were:Alberton second XV beat Quins 48-13.Both the u.19 and u.21 sides lost their

matches. Facebook: Alberton Rugby Club 2017Twitter handle: @RugbyatAlberton

VARSITY Athletics returns to the athletics calendar for a fi fth season in 2017. This year’s Varsity Athletics season will comprise two meetings – the fi rst hosted by the University of Potchefstroom on March 3 and the second on March 31 at the University of Pretoria’s newly renovated stadium.

Some of the athletes taking part in Varsity Athletics this year performed on the Olympic stage in Rio last year, and they’re set to use this platform to build towards Tokyo 2020. Some of the Olympic athletes to have performed on the Varsity Athletics stage include Wayde van Niekerk, Justine Palframan, Rushwal Samaai, LJ van Zyl and Akani Simbine.

The public is sure to be spoilt for choice with scintillating performances from the cream of the crop of South Africa’s athletics community, on both track and fi eld. The likes of Gift Leotlela and Clarence Munyai are set to light up Friday nights on the track. Leotlela is a UP-Tuks student, the current ASA u.20 100m champion and a Rio Olympics athlete.

All the teams will be announced next week. “My goal is to break Akani’s (Simbine)

100m SA record of 9.96 seconds, and if I can do it at Varsity Athletics, even better,” said Leotlela.

“Varsity Athletics affords fantastic opportunities to our young athletes to help them prepare for the biggest athletics event in the world, the Olympic Games, as well as the World Championships,” said Varsity Athletics Manager, Jana Arlow. “They have such passion and love for the sport, and will certainly do their universities proud during Varsity Athletics in 2017.”

The event will continue with the format introduced last year, with two divisions: the Top 15 (A) division which will have eight competing universities, and the Top 10 (B) division, with four competing universities. This format was adopted to accommodate more universities in the Varsity Athletics competition. The universities that joined Varsity Athletics in 2016 are: the University of Cape Town, Central University of Technology, University of Limpopo, and Vaal University of Technology.

Varsity Athletics is endorsed by Athletics South Africa.

Tickets to both meetings are currently available via the Varsity Sports App. To download the app, simply visit your preferred app store.

THE countdown has started to a unique historic event, arguably the fi rst of its kind in a South African sport stadium and one that is set to reshape the mixed usage of cricket facilities and enhance outdoor adventure walking and running - the Gautrain Festival of Running.

It will be hosted by SuperSport Park in Centurion on April 7 and 8.

The festival will commence on Friday April 7, when a corporate relay that can lure a capacity of 1 200 competitors, or 300 teams, will start at 10am. All the participants among the 1 200 will receive medals and the 300 teams will each pay a R1 500 entry fee.

On Saturday April 8, the festival will kick off from 7am to 7.45am, with a family fun run limited to 500 participants.

The ‘pram-walk’ is destined to be another drawcard on the Saturday. Some of the other, many attractions to the two-day event include an endurance event and an extreme relay event.

Clubs, companies or individuals interested in signing up or enlisting for the event can contact Joubert on [email protected], or visit the Multiply Titans website on www.titans.co.za.

Daily business for speedster MoeratMOHAMMED Moerat enjoys the distinction of being the youngest racing champion in South Africa, according to Motorsport South Africa.

His talent was clear from a young age. At the tender age of four, he was already going about his business around the track in his kart as if nothing could disturb him. This little speedster from Winchester Hills used to challenge boys twice his age during practice and beat them. He subsequently went on to win his fi rst race at the age of only fi ve years and two months.

Moerat has only one dream and that is to become the fastest kart driver on the track.

Before he even reached the age of six, he fi nished fourth in the Northern

Regions Championship and won the 2015 Africa Open Championship.

In 2016, the then six-year-old Moerat won Gauteng's Northern Regions cadet class category and is now racing in the Micro Rox and Micro Max Championship. This February he won his fi rst regional race in his Micro Max kart.

He is enthusiastically supported by his mother Tasneem Moerat, his father Kamal (who is his hero), his sister Sameea, his grandparents Vee and Jay and his aunt, uncle and cousin too.

The Grade One learner from Hartford College has made it clear that his goal this year is to fi nish in the top fi ve in the national championship in Micro Max at his fi rst attempt, as well as in the top four in Micro Rox in all

club competitions. If there is any organisation

or individual who would like to sponsor him they are most welcome.

His favourite quote is by US basketball legend Michael Jordan: “I've never lost a game, I just ran out of time.”

Mohammed follows Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen in the Formula One very closely and also fi nds time to play soccer and listen to hip-hop music.
