Oslo has found a new home.The once-starving

boerboel bid farewell to the Brakpan SPCA on Wednesday, last week, when he was collected by his new owner.

The Herald reported in our August 19 edition, how a severely malnourished and injured Oslo was rescued by the Brakpan SPCA on August 12 from a property in Brakpan.

He had been abandoned at the residence and weighed a meagre 47kg.

The neglected dog also had an infected wound on his left leg, which required treatment.

Oslo's new owner, Edenvale resident Mike Mellas, told the Herald that his wife Gillian had seen a Facebook post appealing for assistance with Oslo’s medical treatment.

“We then came through to the SPCA, saw him and fell in love with him,” he said.

According to Brakpan SPCA manager Ming Church, Mike and Gillian would visit Oslo every weekend and would call every day to check on his progress.

“We knew they were just right for Oslo,” she said.

In preparation for his adoption, Mike and Gillian

also brought their Labrador, Suzie, who was also adopted from the SPCA, along to meet Oslo.

The doggy meet-and-greet went well.

During his approximate month-long stay at the SPCA, Oslo’s health improved tremendously.

He was put on a diet of raw feed and boiled eggs to help him gain weight, and was even strong enough to undergo a surgical procedure (neutering) on Tuesday, last week.

The SPCA was also given the green light to take Oslo for hydrotherapy for his hind legs.

The friendly and affectionate dog weighed close to 60kg when he left the society.

Mike had a copious amount of biltong treats on hand for Oslo's journey home, and if this is anything to go by, Oslo will fi nally get the life he deserves with his new family.

Oslo's departure was bittersweet for SPCA staff members and his presence at the society will be greatly missed.

The SPCA posted an update on Oslo on their Facebook page on Monday morning, where it was stated he is loving his new surroundings.

"Big boy has realised he is safe and cared for

A picture is worth a thousand words, or so the old saying goes.

For decades photographs have been used by journalists, artists and the man on the street to capture moments otherwise lost in time, and can be used to tell a story in a way that words just cannot.

A number of Caxton editors shared their thoughts of photos.

“Can you imagine reading a newspaper without any photographs?

“Photographs taken by journalists often summarise what is written in an article and are of utmost importance and are often used to enhance a story.

“This is especially true for readers who don’t have time to read the newspaper from back to front,” said Thelma Koorts, editor of the Brakpan Herald.

“My favourite thing about taking photos is that I can tell a story through my lens.

“Sometimes all you need is a good photo and words become almost unnecessary,” Melissa Hart, editor of the Germiston City News said.

“Strong photos draw readers to stories and make articles and

publications come alive. “Creative juices are let loose

with a camera in hand,” said Kevin van der List, editor of the Benoni City Times.

At the annual Photo and Film Expo, which will be held at the Ticketpro Dome from October 27 to 30, photographers have the opportunity to travel back in time and take part in a workshop that will pay tribute to the original photographic processes.

The Alternative Print Workshop (http://alternativeprintworkshop.co.za) in conjunction with Museum Africa will be running a darkroom on site which will allow visitors a chance to get involved in a demonstration on the developing of fi lm from yesteryear to today, allowing photo enthusiasts to fall more in love with photography.

Visitors can then jump forward in time to a dedicated underwater section.

“A special tank has been built by photographers specifi cally for underwater imaging.

“It will allow us to showcase underwater photography for the very fi rst time at the expo,” explained event organiser, Matt Raven.

Grow your love for photography

Puleng Sekabate, a journalist for the Germiston City News, would be lost without her ability to take photos.

Boy drowns in damA seven-year-old boy died on Saturday, last week, after he became submerged in a quicksand-like substance in a dam near the Vlakfontein Mine Dump, in Tsakane.

It is believed the boy was one of a group of young children who were playing near the mine dump and went swimming in a dam in the area.

The incident took place around midday and community members and EMPD offi cers rushed to the scene.

"One section of the dam apparently contains a dangerous swampy section with cyanide-fi lled soil," said EMPD spokesperson Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago.

"One of the children drowned in the swamp as he could not extricate himself from the quicksand-like muddy area.

"By the time the child could be removed from the swamp, it was too late and paramedics certifi ed him dead on the scene."

Kgasago urged parents to supervise their children.

"Be in the know to their whereabouts at all times and also inform them of areas that are unsafe to play in."

EMPD Brakpan Precinct offi cers and Peace Corps members recently conducted foot patrols within the Plastic City informal settlement, in an effort to make the area safer.

According to EMPD spokesperson Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago, the informal settlement populace is approximately 800, the majority of whom are foreign nationals.

Waste processing and illegal mining are the two main sources of income for many people living here.

"Complaints of spiking crime, vandalising of the concrete palisade fencing around the landfi ll site (Weltevreden) to gain access and diverting trucks coming to dump at the landfi ll site to the informal settlement are some of the illegal activities prevalent in and around the informal settlement," said Kgasago.

"The periodic patrols will continue to be conducted to make the area safer."

Hijacking duo caughtIt took less than two hours for members of the EMPD's Community Liaison and First Responder Units to recover a hijacked vehicle and arrest two men in connection with the crime.

The men were nabbed on Tuesday, last week, after the owner of a white Mazda 323 was hijacked in KwaThema at about 8.30am.

His assailants were armed with a pistol and a knife.

According to EMPD spokesperson Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago, the tracking company relayed the message to the EMPD offi cers who were able to track the vehicle in Tsakane, resulting in the arrest of two suspects.

A 32-year-old man was injured in a head-on collision after allegedly stealing an idling vehicle from a petrol station in Brakpan.

According to EMPD spokesperson Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago, the incident took place on Tuesday, last week, after a couple drove into the local petrol

station at around noon to fi ll up their Mazda 3.

“While the driver was in conversation with the petrol attendant and his wife was seated in the passenger seat, an unknown man jumped into the vehicle and sped off,” said Kgasago.

“The wife jumped out of the

moving vehicle and sustained an injury to her left arm.

“She was rushed to the Life Springs Parkland Hospital.

“Due to the thief’s reckless driving, the stolen Mazda crashed head-on into a red Volkswagen Polo along Vlakfontein Road.

“The EMPD Brakpan Precinct commander came across the

accident scene and called for backup.”

The thief and the driver of the red Polo sustained injuries and were transported to the Pholosong Hospital, in Tsakane.

The suspect was recovering under police guard.

“Both the Mazda and the Polo are write-offs,” added Kgasago.

A guide to reporting municipal problems

“My pa is heeltemal onkant betrap toe drie mans by die agterdeur ingebars het.”

Story: Dogs saved from a shock-ing condition

Reader’s pic of the weekBernadette Cronje shared this special photo of her three-year-old son, Keagan. The photo was taken by Madelyn Hattingh at Little Nemo’s Nursery School on Spring Day. “He has the most gorgeous smile and makes his mommy’s heart melt,” said Bernadette. “A smile that touches so many people’s lives and gives them a smile!”

Ek sal eerder stort as bad.

In the spotlight

In 2003 was ek ’n fi nalis in kykNet se Sakkie Langarm.

Nee, dit gaan sterf as ek my gaan vererg.

What was supposed to be a once-off outreach project to assist the residents of the Magaleni informal settlement in Brakpan North has now turned into a weekly programme.

After seeing the hardship and poverty suffered by many residents of the settlement, pastor Zipho Mhlanga of the Latter

Harvest Ministries now provides a meal to about 100 women and children every Saturday.

“My church had an outreach project in the winter, where we handed out blankets and food to the residents,” said Mhlanga.

“It became very clear that there was a great need and we decided to continue

helping the people.”Mhlanga has managed to

get businesses and members of his church on board in order to supply a meal to the needy on a weekly basis.

“We feed these women and children every Saturday thanks to the donations that we receive,” added Mhlanga.

Bright orange meter boxes have been installed on distribution poles in the Brenthurst and Anzac areas.

The Herald asked the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality to shed some light on these new enclosures:Background

• The enclosures are pole-mounted electronically-activated metering enclosures.

• There are current low voltage service connection cables connected to the distribution poles with the service connection protection circuit breaker installed on top of the poles inside a vulnerable pole top box.

• ±7000 kWh meters are still installed inside the dwellings in the Brakpan Central, Dalview, Brenthurst and Anzac areas.Advantages/purposes for the installation of these enclosures

• The enclosures will replace the existing protection circuit breakers pole-top switchgear boxes, which will be more secure and better protected.

The current pole-top boxes are not in a good condition and often are damaged by harsh weather conditions leaving the circuit breakers and connections in a vulnerable state.

It is also a challenge to reach some of these pole-top boxes due to overgrown tree branches and the availability of specialised vehicles (cherry pickers).

• The enclosures are installed at a 1.5m height from the ground to make it easier for the response, repair and maintenance teams to gain access to the installed equipment.

This will also shorten the response time to attend to no power complaints and the use of specialised vehicles are minimised because you don’t need a cherry picker to attend to a single house connection. More people are now available to attend to complaints because most of the fl eet is LDVs.

It is always a risk working with a cherry picker and with this installation height is also minimised.

• Service connection cables can be easily repaired and installed delivering a better and faster service to the customer.

• Maintenance, inspections and repairs are much easier and more

cost effective with the enclosures installed at a height of 1.5m.

• Energy meters still installed inside the property of the dwellings will be moved out into these enclosures. There is always a battle with meter readings, meter tampering or access to these meters inside dwellings, which are making maintenance, repairs and inspections a nightmare.

It will also minimise meter tampering which will ensure that Ekurhuleni recovers its revenue effectively.

• These type of enclosures are not mechanically locked and therefore management of keys and normal padlocks are a thing of the past, which is a headache currently.

• There are strict access control measures in place to ensure tampering is minimised.

• The enclosures are mapped on GIS-based software to assist the repair and response teams to attend to complaints more effectively. The electronically activated enclosures are controlled and monitored and remotely operated

ensuring the following:• Revenue enhancement

improvementMeter tampering, vandalism,

misuse of electricity, illegal connections, non-paying customers and theft are the major components preventing the municipality from collecting all the entitled revenue for services delivered.

• Continuous fi rm and safe electrical supply to consumers

To ensure all electrical equipment is protected against tampering, vandalism and theft will ensure that this goal can be achieved.

• Reduction in energy lossesTo ensure that misuse of

electricity, tampering and illegal connections are monitored controlled

and responded to will ensure that this goal can be achieved.

• Reduction in maintenance• Reduction in electricity

maximum demand• When misuse of electricity,

tampering and illegal connections are monitored and controlled maximum demand will also decrease.

• Increased safety compliance• A reduction in vandalism• Reduction in nuisance power

failuresTo ensure all electrical equipment

is protected against tampering, vandalism and theft will ensure that this goal can be achieved.

• Reduction in illegal connectionsTo ensure that misuse of

electricity, tampering and illegal connections are monitored controlled and responded to will ensure that this goal can be achieved.

• Reduction in illegal tamperingTo ensure that misuse of

electricity, tampering and illegal connections are monitored controlled and responded to will ensure that this goal can be achieved.

• Improvement of access controlStrict access control, monitor and

response management.• Reduction in nuisance standby

call-outsStrict access control, monitor and

response management is playing a critical role in achieving this goal.

• Maintaining standardisation and consistency

When systems installed have the same functionality and utilises more or less similar equipment/spares/material than it makes maintaining those systems in-house more user-friendly, cost and time effective.

• Asset auditing and trackingLocation and details of the

enclosures for proper audit and asset tracking purposes.

• Compiling of regular inspection intervals

Regular inspections can be professionally conducted through a job card system when assets are properly located through an asset location / tracking database.

• Maintenance and repair job card tracking

Issuing repair / maintenance job cards from inspection results and build a history of each installed enclosure.Installation of enclosures

• These enclosures are only installed for overhead service connection customers in the Brakpan Central, Dalview, Brenthurst and Anzac areas.

• Installations in the Brenthurst and Anzac areas are completed.

Dalview will follow during the remainder of September 2016 until October/November 2016.

Brakpan Central will follow in the new year, around March / April 2017.Removal of meters inside the dwellings and installation into the new enclosures

• As from December 2016 the preparation for removing the existing meters from inside the property to the new enclosures will commence.

• There is a possibility that a large number of meters will be replaced with new pre-payment meters at no cost to the customer.

• All relevant role players will be informed before any meters are removed and installed in the new

Three players could earn their fi rst One Day International (ODI) caps when the Proteas take on Ireland at Sahara Park Willowmoore on Sunday, September 25.

Andile Phehlukwayo, Temba Bavuma and Dwaine Pretorius are in line to make their debuts in the ODI format for South Africa against the Irish, which will get underway at 10am.

Phehlukwayo has been picked for the following series with Australia while Bavuma and Pretorius have only been included for the one-off game against Ireland.

Eastern Cricket Union CEO Cassim Suliman told the Herald that a packed

house is expected and that many tickets had already been purchased online.

He predicted that many more spectators will purchase their tickets at the gates on Sunday.

“It will be fantastic to open the season with the Proteas, Irish and Australians in town and we just hope that the weather will play nicely,” he said. The Proteas last appeared at Willowmoore against Pakistan on Sunday, March 23, 2013 when AB de Villiers’s 95 not out off 111 deliveries steered the team to a 3-2 ODI series win in front of a jam-packed Benoni crowd.

The South African squad for the Ireland ODI: AB de Villiers (captain), Temba Bavuma, Farhaan Behardien, Quinton de Kock, JP Duminy, Faf du

Plessis, David Miller, Chris Morris, Wayne Parnell, Aaron Phangiso, Andile Phehlukwayo, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada.

Although a large crowd is expected on Sunday slightly fewer attendees are anticipated when the Australians take on Ireland at the same venue on Tuesday, September 27, due to it being a work day.

This match will start at 10am and cricket fans could potentially catch a glimpse of Australian superstars like Steven Smith, David Warner and Aaron Finch.

If you are the boss at work then expect a few cricket-loving employees to call in sick on Tuesday morning.

Tickets for both matches can be purchased online at www.ticketpros.co.za or at the stadium on the days.

The fi nal round of the Cambees Midas SA Drift Championships will get under way at the Rock Raceway circuit on Saturday, October 1.

Judges will determine the podium winners in the fi nal drift lunge, as well as who will clinch the fi nal podium spots and who secures the ultimate drift title of the Cambees Midas SA Drift Championships in the Gold Cup Eliminations division.

All is not lost for the competitors who do not qualify to take part in the Gold Cup Eliminations.

Silver Cup Eliminations will ensure that they still get to compete and enjoy the slideways experience, and walk

off with some silverware in hand.

The drift masters will take to the gauntlet laid out by the judges as they try impress them with their style, fl air and sideways antics without losing the drift.

Drifters from all over the country are expected to make their way to the circuit to take on the fi nal round of the championships.

Patrons can make their way to the circuit from 10am when gates open and witness a whole day's practise session before the main event begins at 4pm.

For more information contact the Rock Raceway offi ce on 011 740 8315.

Join the football actionFootball enthusiasts are invited to join a football tournament at the Charl Baard Stadium on Sunday, October 30, from 9am.

The tournament is open to novice and veteran players of all ages.

The organiser, pastor Zipho Mhlanga, encourages players, coaches and supporters to join in.

Mhlanga can be contacted on 078 874 2130 for more information.

The Eastern Gauteng Hockey Association (EGHA) is delighted with the growth of men’s hockey in the region.

“This year has seen a revitalised interest in men’s hockey in the region and our league experienced a 50 per cent increase in team participation,” said EGHA president Chris Fall.

“The committee has been extremely excited by this boost and was impressed by the standard of play displayed over the season.

“The games have been fi ercely contested and the camaraderie displayed has shown that Easterns are once again going to be a force to be reckoned with in the future.

“We were most fortunate to have access to three AstroTurf surfaces for the season, which resulted in the majority of the matches in the league being played on synthetic surfaces.”

The results for the season are contained below, with the Hangovers (Benoni Northerns) reigning supreme in the top section, while the Kittens (also Benoni Northerns) took honours in the lower tier.

Players and spectators alike are reminded that the annual “Crutch Tournament” will be held at the EGHA Astro on Sunday, September 25, starting at 8am.

Final league standings:• Top tier (points/goal

difference): 1 Hangovers 15/+12; 2 Rogues 12/+12;

3 Old Dunstonians B 9/+4; 4 Chirpers 5/+1; Old Dunstonians A 5/-14; 5 Curro Mavericks 0/-15.

• Bottom tier (points/ goal difference): 1 Kittens 15/+19; 2 Colts 8/+7; 3 Geriatrix 8/+4; 4 Mammoth 7/-5; 5 Brakpan Old Boys (BOBS) 5/-8; 6 Modderfontein GO 5/-17.

Proteas captain AB de Villiers thrilled the fans in Benoni with a match-winning 95 not out in an ODI versus Pakistan way back in March 2013. He and his team return to Sahara Park Willowmoore to play Ireland on Sunday, September 25.

Western Province rugby champions Direct Axis False Bay made the trip to Bosman Stadium, to face Siyaya Brakpan Rugby Club, in the second week of the South African Rugby Union’s (Saru) elite community club competition, the Gold Cup, on Saturday, September 17.

The match at the “House of Pain” ended at 26-19 to the hosts.

It was Brakpan’s fi rst encounter

in the tournament and a lot was expected of their highly-rated opponents from the Cape.

False Bay ended their 2016 provincial club campaign undefeated, but they were not ready for the robust and rampant Brakpan forwards, who dazzled in the loose.

The Brakpan forwards stamped their dominance on the proceedings and were also particularly good at line-out time, which has always been a strength of ''Panne'' sides.

The hosts opened the scoring early, through a try from number eight Theo “Spartan” Mynhardt (which was unconverted by fl y-half Gido Horn), courtesy of good work from skipper Francois “Bones” Robbertse in the line-out.

False Bay soon established a three-point lead (9-5), after slotting three penalty kicks, before Brakpan’s captain barged over the line (which was

converted) to give the Panne a 12-9 score at halftime.

The team from the Western Cape struck two minutes after the break, with an unconverted try, to take the score to 12-14.

That quick score didn’t faze the Panne and they soon hit back, to take the lead again, through winger Thinus Ueckermann’s unconverted try (17-14).

Horn knocked over a penalty to stretch the lead to 20-14, before

False Bay crossed the whitewash again, to make the score 20-19.

Horn would slot two more penalties thereafter, to make it 26-19.

The forwards would hold onto the ball and see the game out, to give Brakpan their fi rst big victory in the Gold Cup.

They will now head to Durban’s King Park stadium, to square up against Durban Collegians, on Saturday, September 24, with nothing but a win expected in the quest to top Pool C.

New Renault Mégane better than ever

•ad

Our economy is not in the best shape at the moment and one of the hardest hit sections is the motoring sector.

Just by looking at the monthly sales fi gures, we can see that manufacturers are struggling, and none more so than the smaller brands, in particular the French and Italians. Despite this, Renault has remained in the game with an onslaught of new and impressive vehicles. The latest being the all-new Mégane, which incorporates four key elements. I got to drive it to see just how these elements complement each other. → → DESIGN:If you stand back and look at a car, it is

sometimes easy to see where it was designed. Audi’s for example look as though they have been designed in a laboratory, using all sorts of i-Robot like machines.

The new Mégane though looks as if it was designed in a quaint little street side coffee shop, you know, the sort that ban Wi-Fi and only sell homemade muffi ns. Now this is not a bad thing because from the moment that I saw it, I liked it.

It is neatly proportioned and well-balanced, its volume seems to be drawn from a single line with generous and contoured shoulders reinforcing a perception of quality and sportiness. It is however the front end I like the most, mainly because I do fancy those new C-shaped lighting features which incorporate LED technology.

At the rear, the lighting spectacle continues with neat LED tail lights nearly spanning the entire length of the rear boot lid. It’s as if one can see the brush strokes made by the designer when he drew the car. It most defi nitely has a sense of French fl air to it. → → QUALITY:Inside, I got a sense that everything has been

nicely made and thought out. Designers paid attention to the quality of materials used and the layout is neat. Things that grabbed my attention was the ambient lighting, the racing bucket seats and the seven-inch TFT instrument cluster display

which both add a sense of pizazz. As for space, well the new Mégane is larger

than before which means interior space has been improved, especially for rear passengers. Boot space is also larger than on the Ford Focus, Opel Astra and the Volkswagen Golf. → → TECHNO COCKPIT:The Mégane makes use of a centre dash

mounted tablet-like touch screen which incorporates Renault’s R-LINK 2 system, TomTom navigation and other infotainment functions. On the higher spec GT and GT-Line models, the screen is 8.7-inches while on the entry level Dynamique model, it is seven-inches.

All radio and climate functionality can be controlled via the screen, which has helped to unclutter the dashboard. I am slightly disappointed with the design of the centre stack, it looks as if belongs in a 2004 Jeep Cherokee. I would have liked to see some piano-key black detailing to accompany

>>> JJUUSTIN JACOBS

PICTURE: QUICKPIC

the other stylish aspects found throughout the interior. → → DRIVE:The Mégane is being offered with a choice of

three engines; a naturally aspirated 1.6 with 84 kW / 156 Nm mated to a fi ve-speed manual gearbox, and 1.2-litre turbo with 97 kW / 205 Nm with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch EDC.

Sitting at the top of the range, the GT uses a feisty 1.6-litre turbo with 151 kW / 280 N, harnessed via a seven-speed EDC. n addition, the GT also benefi ts from 4Control, that’s Renault speak for rear-wheel steering... something that makes city driving a breeze. It does however make the rear end feel disjointed, a feeling that is somewhat unusual.

I also managed to thrash the car around Red Star raceway which gave me a chance to test out the launch control and its handling characteristics. It’s not track honed racer but it offers a decent amount of go, I’m just not completely sold on the feeling of

the 4Control yet. → → VERDICT AND PRICINGAfter a quick drive on some back roads, I found

the Mégane to be a huge improvement on the model that it replaces. It no longer looks boring, it looks really good in my opinion and it’s jam-packed with technology.

The different driving modes, known as Multi-Sense, gives drivers the ability to alter the vehicle’s set up. Comfort and Eco mode work well for everyday driving and Sport is to satisfy those urges. As always there are different models available with different trim lines, all adding more comfort and safety features as you move up the list.

Mazda’s forgotten hero, the BT-50

•ad

WE South Africans love our bakkies. They form part of this country’s culture and play a vital role when it comes to the economy. Businesses use them, farmers use them and even housewives drive them around.

The bakkie has really evolved over the years, most of them now offer a car-like driving experience and some even feature impressive safety standards. It is with no doubt that there are two major players in the bakkie segment, the trusty Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger. However, there is another bakkie that we sometimes forget about, the Mazda BT-50.

Since its breakaway from Ford, Mazda has been trying to re-establish itself in the South African market. Their cars are looking good and their after sales service is impressive. Mazda recently dropped off a brand new BT-50 3.2 CRDi Double Cab 4x4

>>> JJUUSTIN JACOBS Drifter auto and by new, I mean it had just 600 km on the clock.

Parked in the Autodealer parking bay, the Moondust Silver paint finish sparkled in the sunshine, while the optional Drifter pack beefs up the look by adding a set of menacing looking black 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Continental Cross Contact All-Terrain tyres, black Drifter badged nudge bar, chunky side steps, an Artav roll bar, heavy duty tow bar and black Drifter badges at the base of the front doors.

At its launch, the BT-50 was one of the fi rst models to incorporate Mazda’s KODO - Soul in Motion design language, with a lion allegedly being used as inspiration. As odd as this sounds, the design, aside from the somewhat questionable rear end, is something different from the usual bakkie norm.

Based on the range topping BT-50 SLE, the

> PICTURE: QUICKPIC

Drifter also uses the same 3.2-litre Duratorq TDCi fi ve cylinder turbodiesel engine as the Ford Ranger, that makes 147 kW and 470 Nm of torque. It’s got all the important things, like a large capacity load bay and the ability to tow a massive 3 500 kg.

Inside, the dashboard is nicely laid out but it is also here where the BT-50 starts showing its age. Unlike the recently refreshed Ranger, the BT-50 has stayed pretty much as is and lacks modern mod-cons such a touchscreen display for the infotainment system.

Although the sound system does feature Bluetooth, the placing of the aux and USB input in the glovebox rates as slightly old-fi nished, while the static display screen above the button festooned dash is a touch to small and can be diffi cult to read.

This sentiment was also shared by our new editorial member, Charl Bosch, who remarked that

some of the plastics felt a trifl e cheap and lacking of vents for rear passengers strange given the Drifter’s fl agship status. He did however express favouritism towards space on the back and fact that lifting the rear bench turned-up two storage areas.

Overall I enjoyed my time with the BT-50 and found the six-speed automatic gearbox made the daunting task of piloting such a massive vehicle so easy in stop start traffi c. The added benefi t of rear parking sensors made reversing that much easier, while a diff-lock and Hill Decent Control sweetens the deal further when you decide to venture off-road.

All in all the Mazda BT-50 might not be as up-to-date as its competitors, but it is a honest bakkie with power and comfort. What’s also extremely appealing is Mazda’s new fi ve year/150 000km warranty on all models.

BMW’s two-wheeled crossover•ad

I reached in to the depths of my cupboard on what was a mild Monday morning. I wiped a thin layer of dust from the top of a box that hadn’t been accessed for a couple of years. The contents included my helmet, gloves and riding jacket. You see, for the fi rst time in a few years, I was going for a ride.

I loaded my gear in to what was, rather ironically - as you will discover later - a Renault crossover test car as I knew that later that day, a two-wheeled product from a certain Bavarian marque was set to arrive at the Autodealer offi ce.

I was distracted the entire morning until I saw a car arrive through my offi ce window. Strapped to the back of a rather fancy trailer was a motorbike. I didn’t hesitate to sign my life away in waivers to claim the keys. I waved goodbye to the fl eet manager and as that car disappeared from sight, I sprinted to my offi ce and suited-up for a ride.

I approached the white machine. It was a BMW S 1000 XR. From what I could surmise, it is the love child of an S 1000 R and an R 1200 GS as it has an adventure bike vibe to it, with the heart of a superbike. I sat on the bike; I was relieved to see that my hobbit-esque frame was able to fi t on it as I have had trouble with these adventure-style machines before.

I put the bike in neutral and fi red it up. It certainly sounds like a superbike, which is strange when you’re sitting on something quite tall with wide handle bars and a large seat. The bike has the same 999cc motor and basic chassis as the S 1000 R, which is somewhat of a monster although in this guise, it produces ‘only’ 118kW/112Nm in a machine that weighs 228 kg with a full tank of fuel.

>> SSEAN NURSE@sean_carnut_ @seanurzz

Don’t for a second let those adventure bike looks deceive you; the XR is exceptionally adept at covering ground at what is quite an alarming rate. I was quite shocked at the level of performance on offer. From idle to around 7000 rpm, it feels fairly docile as you fl ick up through the quick-shifter, however, it is after that where the bike starts to really move with a grin-inducing crescendo all the way to around 11 000 rpm.

The bike is of course made to compete with the Ducati Multistrada and compete is most certainly will. I would be very surprised if the Ducati could sniff this XR in a straight line. I am sure the Italian has its merits, however it would have to be very competent indeed to beat-out this BMW.

Riding the XR is a fairly fuss-free affair; it never feels heavy or too big and provides some comfort on the highway with a relatively large wind shield. One thing I had noted on the freeway, was that the bike does vibrate quite a bit, my hands tingled after a longer ride, which I didn’t expect.

I also found the fact that the bike was fi tted with adjustable ABS brakes in addition to Brembo callipers quite reassuring. There is also a rather clever traction control system that can be placed in modes that range from ‘Rain’ to ‘Normal’ and ‘Dynamic’ depending on your mood.

At the time of writing, I hadn’t even fi nished my week stint on the bike, but had ridden it at every opportunity and had enough to form an opinion of the product. The way in which BMW has blended the usability and comfort of an adventure bike with the performance of a superbike is impressive.

The S 1000 XR won’t do what an R 1200 GS can do off the beaten path nor will it be at home on the track like the S 1000 R, but, as with the car industry, people want crossovers, modes of transport that are the proverbial ‘Jack of all trades’. On that front, the XR provides a compelling

compromise between performance, handling and comfort.

My first ride in a few years was certainly a memorable one. I look forward to further

reigniting my passion for two-wheeled objects in the near future.

WINS R250

PUNISHMENT FOR SPEEDERS NEEDS TO BE HARDER

Congratulations on winning R250 courtesy of Williams Hunt Randburg. Phone: 011 889 0722 to collect. Winnings not collected within 30 days of publication will be donated to char-ity. Winners need to produce a valid form of identifi cation to claim prize.

Dear Editor

I refer to Derek Walters’ “winning” letter - Note to new JHB government: Can blue lights and give JMPD “proper” jobs (Week 38). I strongly agree with him on the issue of the of “ban the blue light brigade”. This also needs to apply to the national roads. I strongly disagree with him on the speed fi ne issue.

He joins the outcry of so many lawless drivers, including even the AA. The poor speed fi ne “victims” are proving that 80% plus of them have no respect for any law. By fi ning them, JMPD is addressing 80% plus of lawless drivers.

If you disregard the speed limit, you are 100% going to violate the other rules of the road - skipping red robots, dangerous lane changing, passing on solid lines and at dangerous spots on the roads, to mention but a few characteristics of these “innocent victims”.

My solutions to these speed fi nes: if a driver has more than fi ve speed fi nes in one month, take his / her driver’s licence away for one year. Secondly, double current fi nes where the max speed limit was exceeded by 15% in a 60 and 80 km/h zones, and 12% in a 100 and 120 km/h zones, with an escalation factor build in as the speed is violated more and more. Include imprisonment if the max speed is violated by more than 25%.

Mr Minnaar some of us thank you for the speeding cameras. You just do not have enough cameras out there. My suggestion is to install fi xed cameras on high accident zones - video and speed. This include the highways.

Deon Heymans

THE TRAFFIC CIRCLE OF LIFE

Dear Editor

As the busy roads gets to the daily routine of users, there are a set of rules to be adhered to as these make up a complete traffi c circle. It doesn’t only apply to the ones on wheels only, but for every road user.

This includes those who are on foot as well to comply to the rules, that makes the traffi c circle complete.

As you go through the learner licence phase, you are guided by a set of rules and regulations, which at some point will contain the word “pedestrian “.

If one has to stop for a pedestrian to have access to the roads, then you are not only being compliant to traffi c rules, but also amongst the best drivers in the world.

However, pedestrian also have to comply with the rules. If one has to stop to give way to the one on wheels, then that’s being observant of what is going on along the traffi c circle. Look to your right and left and listen, look to your right and left listen and safely cross the road.

You are amongst the traffi c circle and part of it so comply, both the one on wheels and the one on foot.

Making money from motoringTo see the latest pics and videos go to www.autodealer.co.zaOPINION

www.autodealer.co.za

- Ziphorah Masethe MANY people will tell you that shares in a

successful company, property or commodities are great ways to invest your money and well, they would be right. But what if I told you that certain vehicles that have been on sale over the past decade or so could have been seen as an investment?

The old saying “you have to spend money to make money” rings true in this case, so if you’re like me and couldn’t even afford to pay attention, then at least see this piece as some interesting reading. Here are six cars that would have made you money had you purchased one years ago.→→ 1. BMW 1-SERIES M – The ‘baby’ M Car

the world saw go in to production back in 2011 was a masterpiece. It made use of the twin-turbo N55 motor from the Z4 35is that was good for 250kW/450Nm, while on the suspension and braking front, the car made use of bits from the V8-powered M3 of the time. Just over 6 000 units were produced worldwide. Some sources claim that 71 reached local shores whiles others state just over 100 units made SA home. Either way it is a rare and very valuable car.

The list price when new was R537 500, however these days you’d be lucky to get a good one for R700 000 meaning that even if you had purchased one and driven it until now, you’d still make a bit of money or at least not have lost any of your hard-earned Rands.→→ 2. BMW M3 CSL – The E46 CSL is considered

one of the great BMW M Cars. Just 65 were brought to South Africa and carried a price tag of around R940 000, which at the time was quite hefty. The cars dropped in value over the years however in the last year or so, values have skyrocketed with clean examples selling for around R1.4-million locally.

→→ 3. PORSCHE 911 GT3 RS (991) – The 991 GT3 RS has been an incredible success for the Porsche brand. It is one of the most desirable cars on the planet and for the handful of lucky local owners who paid just over R3-million for their examples; the scintillating driving experience is just one of its virtues. There are reports of these vehicles fetching around R5-million in the used market, such is the demand. Now that’s what I call an investment.→→ 4. FORD FOCUS RS MK II - The motoring

world has been abuzz in 2016 with the excitement

surrounding the third generation Ford Focus RS, and how it encapsulates what a modern hot hatch should represent. However, the car that preceded the current model retailed for R479 000 back in 2010. All sixty units were sold and since then, a clean example would command a R100 -R200 000 premium over its initial list price.→→ 5. VOLKSWAGEN GOLF VII GTI CLUB-

SPORT S – The VW Clubsport has already hit local shores, however the Nürburgring lap record-smashing ‘S’ version is set to arrive in October of this year. We will only get 47 units and with pricing around the R700 000 mark, lucky owners will have something rather special that will very likely make them some money.→→ 6. NISSAN SKYLINE GTR (R32, R33, R34)

– The cars that gave the Nissan Skyline GTR its notorious ‘Godzilla’ nickname were going for

very reasonable prices in years past. However, these days demand for these tuner cars has soared, as have the prices. It is becoming increasingly diffi cult to get these cars in to South Africa and even more so to get them registered on local number plates. If you have a proper four-wheel drive GTR with the infamous RB26DETT engine, expect to make a tidy profi t from it if you’ve owned it for a few years.

There are a number of other examples out there. Can you think of any? Write to us. Check out our next edition where I’ll be listing six reasonable priced cars that enthusiasts need to look at. •ad
