Human traffi cking has been on everyone’s lips due to horrifi c videos and “statistics” fl ooding social media recently causing widespread panic as moms fear for their children’s safety.

Zululand-based pastor and founder of the anti human traffi cking organisation Freedom Generation, Caroline Pitout said the lack of reporting makes

understanding the rate of human traffi cking locally diffi cult.

“Although there are many rumours of abductions, kidnappings and human traffi cking, we are not seeing the matters in black and white via the police channels. Nationally, 400 people - mainly adults - have been reported to be traffi cked between 2016 and 2017,” said Pitout, who through Freedom Generation has developed resources like colouring

books to educate grade RR to grade three pupils about human traffi cking.

Umhlali SAPS Captain Vinny Pillay said there is no evidence that human traffi cking videos and stories shared on social media are legitimate cases.

“Not a single case has been reported in our area so far. However, we urge the community to be vigilant and if you see something suspicious such as a child getting into a stranger’s car try to get the

In true Ubuntu spirit typical on the Dolphin Coast, hundreds of people fl ocked to the Ballito library this week to donate blood for a Salt Rock mother critically injured in a car accident on Saturday.

of donor blood.Hardy was rushed to hospital,

with allegedly only two bags of blood available to her in the whole of KZN.

“She sustained polytrauma and is critical but stable,” said Netcare 911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst.

boys, Josh (9) and Cooper (7), was rushed to Umhlanga Hospital. Her husband, Dave, who works abroad in Uganda, fl ew home on Sunday to be with his family.

When she arrived at the hospital, there were apparently only two bags of donor blood available to her. Hardy’s blood type is O negative, one of the rarest, with supply being scarcer than any other type. People with O negative blood are universal donors, however they can only receive blood of the same type.

News of the accident quickly spread across the Dolphin Coast community with messages fl ooding social media calling for O negative donations. People from as far as Newcastle and Johannesburg were willing to donate after reading the article on the Courier website which reached more than 35 000 people on Facebook.

Although many were ready to donate immediately, the donation process is complex and cannot be done directly at the hospital, but only at a South African National Blood Service (SANBS) branch or blood drive.

The blood drive at the Ballito Library, which is held on the second Tuesday of every month, gave those willing to help the opportunity in a quick, painless and life-changing way. This particular drive normally receives an average of 50 donors, however this week the line was out of the door.

“My wife and I were strolling along the

beach for our anniversary, when we noticed all the cars outside the library,” said local resident Nel Sewraj, who donated blood with his wife, Annet.

“We remembered that the blood clinic was being held, which is usually very quiet. We have been coming here for over seven years and this is the busiest we have seen it.”

Taryn Francis, one of Hardy’s close friends who was with her the night before the accident, said, “Kerry is one of the most inspirational, positive, motivational people we know. She has a strong, determined spirit and we believe she will come through this with a full recovery.

“Please join us all in praying for Kerry at 8am and 8pm (and more) every day. You can also send her “high fi ves and good vibes” at these times of the day. The collective power of this positivity will go a long way in helping Kerry’s recovery.”

Another close friend of hers, who asked to remain anonymous, thanked

the community for rallying to donate blood, as it has been a huge help.

“The family is dealing with a lot of grief at the moment. They are very fragile and we ask that you respective their privacy while they are going through this hard time, although prayers and thoughts are very welcome.”

“Human traffi cking is real, but social media is completely blowing the situation out of proportion and Whatsapp groups are the biggest guilty party,” said Berkeley, who has two small children.

“If you Google ‘kidnapping in Ballito’ a million diff erent pictures and stories come up, but when you look into them they are not current or are not from the area.”

She said while human traffi cking can happen anywhere, it most often happens in poor environments because people are vulnerable and desperate for money or a way out.

“The sad reality is that we live in a country with such high poverty problems that people will do bad things or get themselves into a situation that is not safe just for little money.”

She believed the most vulnerable are children walking to school and back on their own.

“The little tots who walk to Sizani for example are in danger - they need the community to help them be it older kids walking in groups with them or grandparents monitoring the walk. The best way to beat human traffi cking is for us to start behaving more like a

community and look out for each other.”Berkeley’s tips to be savvy about human

traffi cking:1. Don’t over share. Avoid posting the

details of your child’s upcoming birthday party on Facebook or sharing photos of them in their school uniforms.

2. Do not meet strangers in their homes or in an isolated place, go somewhere safe and let people know where you are and how long you expect to be there.

3. When you are at a restaurant or play area, do not rely on the child minder to watch your child.

4. If a stranger takes photos of your kids, run for the hills and report it to SAPS immediately.

5. Practice security drills with your children: if you lose mom in the mall call for help; if someone pics you up from behind scream; if someone other than mom collects you up from school, ask the school to phone mom and check.

6. The golden rule is to report a missing child or person immediately to SAPS - do not wait 24 hours as they say in movies - and phone the Human Traffi cking Hotline: 0800 222 777.

Mandeni farmers battle invasionsErica Abrahams

Sugarcane farmers around Mandeni are being crippled by land invasions, while local police refuse to arrest those responsible.

In a meeting with DA parliament members Dean Macpherson, shadow mister of police, Dianne Kohler Barnard, leader of provincial legislature, Sizwe Mchunu and other councillors last Saturday, 15 local farmers said they had reached their wit’s end after having battled with illegal invasions and threats for as long as 18 years.

According to the landowners, their title deeds and court interdicts have not made a difference to their situation as Mandeni SAPS refuse to act against the culprits, saying the matter was a civil one and not criminal.

“I went to Mandeni police station to open a case of trespassing and illegal building on my plot. I have in my possession a high court interdict preventing any new buildings from being erected. We have been told by a warrant offi cer that this is a civil matter and that they can only ask the illegal builders to stop trespassing. They will not make any arrests and said we should go to court,” said one farmer.

Farmers report the invasions are affecting

production, spreading fear and devaluing their properties. In addition to the lack of action by authorities, Mandeni municipality this year increased their property rates by

more than 200 percent. In a similar case in Etete

two months ago, 17 people were arrested by Umhlali SAPS for illegally building shacks on privately-owned farmland. Macpherson said the inconsistencies were simply unacceptable. Party members visited Mandeni SAPS after their meeting with the farmers, where they were told that the police would not be making any arrests.

“These farmers have owned the land for a long time and some have been struggling with land invasions since 2004 while the police refuse to enforce the law.

There’s been invasion after invasion and no government assistance at all. The system has failed farmers who play a signifi cant role in our overall economy.”

Macpherson said reports that some members of Mandeni SAPS had been involved in land invasions and selling land for R20 000 a plot would be investigated.

“We spoke to the offi cer on duty and he confi rmed that they will not be doing anything. We will be escalating this matter.”

Sewage fl ows into NonotiAllan Troskie

There’s something in the air in Darnall, and it isn’t the smell of spring arriving.

Residents of the town and the nearby Lindelani township are seriously concerned about sewage leaking into the Lindelani stream and into the Nonoti River. Sewage seeps from manholes in the middle of the township, surrounded by homes, women washing clothes and children playing.

The sewage issue has been ongoing since the beginning of the year, with dead fi sh even being observed in the Nonoti earlier this year. The sewage leaks are semi-constant, seeping into the soil and stream and with the arrival of any rain, becomes a gushing fount of human waste.

Darnall Conservancy chairman and local

farmer David Clewlow said this had been an ongoing issue.

“The farmers are concerned about the safety of the water they

are getting from the Nonoti River,” he said.

“However, even more worrying is the sewage in the middle of the township where children play and people get water from the stream for household tasks.”He said they had

engaged with the municipality regarding this

issue, but felt they were not being taken seriously.

However the Ilembe District Municipality, which is responsible for water and

sanitation, has not responded to enquiries over the last two weeks.

So in the meantime, it seems as though locals will just have to pinch their noses and get on with it.

Many Ballito residents realised at the 11th hour that an innocuous-sounding municipal notice could, in fact have far-reaching implications for property values throughout the KwaDukuza region.

In August, following a legal notice in this newspaper, residents adjoining Ellis Place, between Townsend Road and Avondale Drive received a notice from the municipality that the developer of a property at 18 Ellis Place had applied for town planning requirements to be changed “from Rode 6 to Rode 2”.

This meant nothing to the average homeowner and most ignored the notice. Objections to the application were to be submitted by Monday this week, September 10.

However, alarm bells went off when a few neighbours realised the implications of this change.

“If approved it potentially means anyone on the North Coast with a traditional special residential site with a minimum lot size of 900sq m will be able to divide their site into

two, increase their coverage from 30% to 75%, increase their fl oor area ratio (FAR) from 0.35 to 0.6, and decrease their building lines on sides from 2m to 1.5m on sides and from 7.5m on front to 3m,” one told the Courier.

This could open the gates for double the number of dwellings on half the land. Even existing homeowners with 900 sq m would be able to divide their properties and build

one or more units on the remainder.“There may be a number of people in

KwaDukuza who for fi nancial or other

reason would wish to follow suit and divide their properties, but the impact in the long run is negative unless it is done in an ordered fashion from the outset.

“Developments such as Seaward Estate are designed for a certain density of living and everyone knows what they are buying into. If this is allowed it will be impossible to ensure a fair and appropriate outworking of ad hoc development in an area already established for so many years.”

Professionals the Courier approached agreed and said there could be signifi cant implications on the quality and nature of the urban space in future.

The extent of green space would be threatened as the coverage for the area would be more than double (from 30% to 75%). With hard surfaces required for driveways, dry yards and pathways there

would be very little green space left.“Though this is only one property

applying for these rights, it is the long-term implication if many properties start doing the same thing which would change the entire urban atmosphere in the area.”

They stressed that Ballito and Salt Rock were not designed for dense living, which could have knock-on eff ects for privacy, strain on bulk services such as sewage and stormwater, and increased traffi c. Ultimately this would aff ect property prices.

One resident who managed to submit an objection just before the time limit on Monday was Dr Kevin Stevens, chairman of the Ballito Business Centre body corporate, just to the north of Ellis Place.

Dr Stevens said he had not realised the implications of the notice until he discussed it with an urban planning professional.

“What is concerning is that the notice, at face value, gave no hint of the seriousness of its intent.

“The average home owner is not equipped to deal with notices for proposed amendments to town planning schemes. Most people do not even know what FAR or coverage refer to and there is no reason they would if they are not in the property industry,” Dr Stevens said.

Property professionals have long called for the re-instatement of a review committee as existed under the old Dolphin Coast municipality representing the general public on any application that will create precedent or have a large impact on the wider community.

Such a committee could be made up of property developers, town planners, engineers, building contractors and municipal town planning offi cials who could jointly review, in an impartial manner, submissions that aff ected zoning changes or relaxations to the town planning scheme.

To date the municipality has resisted calls for such a review committee involving the property industry and offi cials.

A birthday celebration for a Mandeni police offi cer turned into tragedy when she was murdered at the weekend.

Sergeant Nonhlanhla Mazibuko was shot and killed, allegedly by her boyfriend, who is a taxi owner in Mandeni, on Saturday night.

According to her son, Andile (20), Mazibuko was with her boyfriend in a tavern that they co-owned in the Bhidla area.

“We were just sitting there and he asked if we were hungry. We were sent to buy meat and when we

returned were told that my mother had been killed by her boyfriend,” said Andile.

Mazibuko is survived her two sons, Andile, who is in his fi rst year at college and Wandile (18) who is in matric.

“She was the only one working at home and now that she is gone, we are left with our granny,” said Andile. The boyfriend handed himself to police on

Saturday night and will appear at the Nyoni Magistrates Court.

The vice chairman of the Tongaat Taxi Association and chairman of the Uthongathi Football Club, Nicholas Mkhize was gunned down on Monday night in Tongaat.

Mkhize was killed after the club’s weekly technical meeting. Emergency Control SA’s Ishmail Mitha said two vehicles stopped on the road outside the Linmed Pharmacy where the man had parked his car and opened fi re.

IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Paul Herbst said paramedics found the man alone and fatally wounded with over 13 bullet holes - believed to be from an AK47 - in his car.

Uthongathi Football Club spokesperson Nkosinathi Chili said Mkhize was the source of their strength.

“He was about to start his car and we just heard lots of gunshots. He did not even

move from the chair. It is so sad because he was the one who closed the meeting

with a prayer and it turned into a very long one, as he kept on asking God to give us strength and be always united,” said Chili.

Chili described Mkhize as a man who was very helpful not only in their club but also in the community, doing lots of good things to help Tongaat residents.

“He recently helped a family to bury their child that had been in the mortuary for three weeks because they did not have money for the funeral,” said Chili.

The club is meant to play Real Kings in Durban this weekend, but that might not

happen as Chilli said they will be asking PSL to postpone the match.

Uthongathi FC is playing in the fi rst national division which is the second ranked league in the country.

KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu was given a honourary doctorate of theology by the Independent Theological Institute (ITI) on Sunday.

The Institute was holding its graduation day at Chief Albert Luthuli Multipurpose Hall.

ITI chancellor Bonginkosi Zikhali said the institute felt that Mthembu needed to be honoured for the good work he does in the community. ITI is registered with the Independent Churches Co-ordinating Board.

“Looking at the developments in KwaDukuza

since he became a mayor, we felt he deserves the doctorate,” said

Zikhali.Mthembu became mayor in 2011 and was re-

elected for a second term in August 2016. Most recently in July 2018, he was elected to the provincial executive committee of the ANC in KZN.

“As a community leader we always expect

that people will swear at us and criticise us. This

encourages me to work harder to ensure services are delivered and restored to the communities of KwaDukuza,” said the mayor.

Farm attack suspect caughtErica Abrahams

After a two day search, the man accused of savagely attacking a Darnall mother with a cane knife while she shielded her child, was arrested last Wednesday.

Last Monday, Raeanne van der Wath, the wife of a manager on Hummello Farm, lived through every mother’s worst nightmare when her fi ve-year-old daughter’s screams alerted her to an intruder in their kitchen. The man was apparently a disgruntled employee who planned to attack her husband over a work dispute.

“That morning the employee went to the farm with the other staff but shortly after arriving he left the group saying that he needed to use the toilet. This is when we believe he entered the farm manager’s

home through the kitchen door. The victim’s husband had already gone out to the fi elds,” said KwaDukuza SAPS spokesperson constable Sibusiso Khuzwayo.

It is believed the attacker fi rst swung the cane knife at the child, but Van der Wath jumped in front of her to protect her. After repeatedly hacking the woman in full view of her daughter, the man fl ed into the sugarcane fi elds. He was arrested two days later in Nonoti and appeared in court last Friday where he was detained in custody.

According to neighbouring farmers, Van der Wath sustained multiple injuries including a broken arm, broken ankle, a gash to the head and wounds. She is said to have been discharged from hospital and is on the road to recovery. Her child was physically unharmed.

Bail applications for rock-throwers ongoingAllan Troskie

The Verulam Magistrate’s court heard last week how three men counted down before throwing a large rock at a vehicle on the N2, killing two people.

Amina Haff ajee and her seven-year-old brother Abdur of Vereeniging were killed last December when the rock thrown from the Greylands Road bridge over the highway struck the car they were travelling in.

The men: Selvan Govender (46), his son Nathan Govender (27) and Qiniso Bhekithemba Gumbi (20), each face two counts of murder and attempted murder. It is believed there is a fourth suspect still at large.

No conclusion was reached in the most

recent bail hearing on Thursday last week, and the three men were remanded in custody pending their next appearance on September 26.

Investigating offi cer Ivan Padayachee told magistrate Vera Alamchand that they had managed to trace fi ve witnesses to the incident on December 27 last year.

In their last appearance in court, Padayachee argued that if granted bail the accused would interfere with State witnesses. The witnesses are minors between the ages of nine and 16.

Padayachee said Selvan Govender allegedly counted down as he watched the target vehicle approach the bridge before Gumbi dropped the rock.

The accused have pleaded not guilty.

I love dogs. I’ve had a dog since I was knee high and they’ve been constant companions, except when we were living overseas.

For the last 35 years or so we owned Dobermans. They’re very good watchdogs and great companions, though they need a lot of socialising. We love to walk on the beach every morning, also to exercise the dogs, though on occasion the Dobie just

took a dislike to another dog and then there was blood and fur fl ying. The other dog’s blood and fur. Tends to make one unpopular with their owners.

So when our last Dobie died, we decided to look for a gentler dog and settled on a lovely black Labrador. His name is Magic - after the chocolates, natch - and a nicer puppy you could not meet. He has got to say hello to absolutely everyone on the beach with a big lick and plays with all the other dogs.

Like most Labradors, he has no fear of water. He

loves swimming, leaping into rock pools and, much to Rose’s helpless disapproval, our swimming pool. Well, we thought, we’ve got the (almost) perfect dog.

Until last Friday. That evening, Magic decided he could not wait for us to take him to the beach in the morning. So he did something the Doberman had never done - he jumped the 1.5 metre fence at one end of the property and headed off .

I searched the streets, but nothing. Then Rose put a message out on social media and, hey, within 30 minutes some kind person said they had found him in the road at Chaka’s Rock, dripping wet after swimming in the Chaka’s tidal pool, so had dropped him off at the Ballito fi re station. No, he wasn’t wearing a name tag. I haven’t known where to fi nd a tough one since the guy who used to engrave them outside Pick n Pay moved on.

I don’t know if I’ve compounded the problem, but we had a brass name tag from that era, left over from a previous dog named Wanda. She was a pavement special Maureen Peranovich decided we needed to adopt and, well, she wandered all over the place, but she did always come home. I know that’s not Magic’s name, but it has Rose’s cell number on it. So I put the tag on Magic’s collar and, wouldn’t you know it, on Saturday morning he jumped the fence again. Give a dog a name - Wanda by name, wander by nature!

This time he was picked up by the folk at Salt café, wet and happy, he had a phone number, so all ended well (perhaps he’d gone there for pizza). But, I realised, it was time for action. So I bought a roll of chicken wire and after much hacking through the bush, cutting my hands and a lot of swearing, the fence was doubled in height.

Did I mention this was done in the pouring rain? Wasn’t the rain just great! All the farmers at Coastal Farmers’ co-op were smiling for a change, so the rain must have

been terrifi c. And a lot of it went down my neck while putting up the fence. But worth it, I thought.

Problem solved? I’m afraid not. As soon as I let Magic out of the house, he swarmed over that higher fence like the cow over the moon. I might as well have left the gate open.

Rose fetched him from a kind person a few streets away, again thanks to Wanda’s name tag. But what are we to do? I’m still working on that.

But I am now warming to the idea that perhaps I prefer cats.

A pretty dime for the Orphan Fund

Proceeds of this year’s successful Miss Ballito 2018 pageant were handed over to the The North Coast Courier Orphan Fund by the Rotary Club of Zimbali recently.

The event, which also included an incredible talk by guest speaker and author Jill Baker, took place at Zimbali Resort.

Of the funds raised from the 2018 pageant, R10 000 was handed over to The North Coast Courier Orphan Fund founder Rose Stephenson and co-ordinator June Mdolo.

The remaining funds were handed over to the Rotary’s BRITE Eyes cataract project, which will go towards the purchase of new instruments used in cataract operations.

The beauty pageant, presented by the Rotary Club of Zimbali is an annual charity event that has been running since 2012.

“The objective of this pageant has less relevance to beauty, but rather to identify

the talents of prospective young local female entrepreneurs and then grooming them to help Rotary in improving the lives

of the underprivileged within our community. In so doing they

exemplify Rotary’s motto of ‘Service Above Self’,” said Zimbali Rotary President Julie Cloete.

Annually, the funds raised are used to fund service activities undertaken by several

NPO’S, and one such benefi ciary is the Orphan

Fund. “The Orphan Fund is

humbled, grateful and honoured to be the benefeciary of this very generous donation from the Zimbali Rotarians,”

said Mdolo.“Thank you, from our hearts to yours.”To date Zimbali Rotary has donated

just over R135 000 to assist this fund in providing personal transformation to orphaned, abandoned and vulnerable children.

She is a perfectly groomed, elegant lady who is not afraid to get her hands dirty and get involved in the lives of those people who have been given the cold shoulder by society.

Ballito’s Margie Els is a wife, mother to three children and recently-turned grandmother and is one of 14 fi nalists in the 40-60 year category of Mrs Africa Classic 2018/2019.

“Mrs Africa is not about what you look like in a bikini. It is open to all women of Africa of all shapes and sizes who make a diff erence in their community,” said Els, who has taken part in many pageants of this nature and has organised charity fund raisers to help babies, adults and gogos in need.

“Beauty is not physical, it comes from the heart and there are a lot of diff erent aspects to it such as being kind, having compassion and making someone smile.”

The Mrs Africa Foundation is the offi cial charity organisation of the Mrs Africa Pageant and fi nalists will be raising awareness and funds for the Nzuri Project which aims to treat the Endemic Goitre Condition in central Africa which aff ects thousands and the main cause is the traditional eating of cassava and cabbage and defi ciency in selenium and iodine. The second offi cial charity is Dignity Dreams washable and

reusable sanitary pads and DeskBags which are lightweight satchel bags that convert into portable lap desk for school children who do not have a desk at home or at school to work.

“I love these products because they are so useful. Both products are environmentally friendly - the desktop bags are made from recycled billboard material and Dignity Dreams pads will not end up in landfi lls

like single-use sanitary pads that are not biodegradable. My aim is to raise enough money to buy 100 of each product which will then be handed out to underprivileged, local school children.”

The trained nursing sister said being involved in charity work has fed her soul in a way that no amount of money can.

“I led a selfi sh life for a long time wanting fast

cars and elaborate holidays but it does not make you happy. We live in a time where there is so much injustice and poverty, yet we waste so much. You cannot fi x the world, but you can make a small diff erence.”

To get involved, contact Els on 082 579 5888.

OPINIONS

Julanda Lotriet shares her experience of exercise during pregnancy:

I was 34 years of age, pregnant with my fi rst child and decided to do a homebirth. For that reason, there were strict rules laid out for me by my midwife, one being on an exercise program.

I asked a biokineticist to help me with a program, to get me fi t and ready for a natural birth. The program changes every trimester to accommodate my diff erent levels of pregnancy. I was in the gym three times a week.

My food menu also changed to a very healthy meal option, cutting out coff ee, sugar and carbs in my last trimester. I drank two to three litres of water a day, worked full days until the day before I gave birth. I was extremely healthy, no high blood pressure or high sugar, which can occur during pregnancy.

I felt amazing during my pregnancy. I only gained 7kg in total and lost that within the fi rst week after giving birth. Hugo was born healthy at 39 weeks after a four-hour labour. I had lots of good quality milk and I breast fed for 12 months. Hugo only needed anti-biotics once and has been in a day-care since he was six months old.

I am now six months pregnant with my second baby and it is exactly the same story, hoping to give natural birth again to a healthy baby. Exercise is a MUST during pregnancy, obviously tailor-made for every individual.

I hope this inspire more moms to look after themselves, because you just feel so much better after the birth!

Joy is the emotion that has power to inspire faith and courage. “...be not grieved and depressed, for the joy of the Lord is your strength....” (Nehemiah 8:10)

The Westminster Catechism says: “The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.” There are some habits that are worth cultivating, that help ensure that our joy-tank is kept full. Here are two suggestions:

• Worship. Take time to worship God. Like Nehemiah who was inspired to lead an army of builders to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, in the face of discouraging circumstances, God’s presence had power to

infuse him with joy and strength to restore the city. He called it “The Joy of the Lord”. God is, in Himself, continually fi lled with joy. Jesus’ experience is described as: “God has anointed, pouring out the oil of joy on you more than anyone

else.” (Hebrews 1:9). And “In Your presence is fullness of joy; in Your right hand there are pleasures forever.” (Psalm 16:11). The same power is present within us, to impart to us “the fruit of the Spirit which is ... joy”. In an ever increasing worshipful lifestyle we can learn to “practice the presence of God.”

• Thankfulness. A habit of thankfulness is able to keep one from negativity and ensures a daily atmosphere of joy. Choosing to be thankful for even small things, such as an interesting cloud in the sky, the face of a smiling child, the song of a bird nearby, can put a smile on one’s

face, and lift one’s soul out of the doldrums.

Joy is not just a welcome by-product of obedience to God, it is at the heart of our mandate. Many occasions in the Bible, joy is commanded of us. Thus, clearly, joy, like love or faith, is a response we can choose to exercise.

It is not just something that happens to us, but it is a response we can do as an act of the will. It is possible to refuse to allow diffi cult and hard circumstances to permanently rob us of our joy. Negativity and joy are both contagious. Keeping company with negative individuals and those with toxic dispositions has power to infect and poison our perceptions and attitudes. By the same token, if you and I choose to respond with joy, we will bring joy to others. Dorothy Day said: “I believe we are called to the duty of delight.”

Response to the article: Over before it began for young girl hit by truck – BallitoZakhona Magwaza from Nkobongo was taking an ID photo needed by the company that was going to give her a bursary, when she was hit by a truck at the notorious P445 traffic lights, between Lifestyle Centre and the Ballito Junction, on August 8.

Response to the article: No driving licences issued in KZN for a monthFrustration continues to mount at the KwaDukuza testing and licencing office as motorists have been unable to collect driver’s licence cards for more than a month.

Joanne Pretorius Why so many accidents? Is it speeding motorists or daring pedestrians?

Belinda Elsworth Jip, applied in April. Went in June just to be told I had to re do my photos and fingerprints, and to this day no reply from their offices.

Gerhard Kruger My wife is also waiting. She applied two days after her license expired; we could not go to the licensing dept as they were throwing stones at cars and it was too dangerous. We were told it’ll take six weeks and we decided not to take a temporary license (R90-00). It seems that the semi-government dept. printing the cards, are striking. Nobody can tell us how long the strike will go on AND there will be a back log from beginning of July. Patience my fellow country men and women.

Tony Sherwin Terrible traffic management by the city and town planning. That intersection has people on all sides. An elevated bridge over that road is not impossible. The inaction of city officials cost this child’s life. This needs urgent attention. A pedestrian bridge crossing from the taxi rank side of the road to the mall side needs to be considered as a matter of urgency

Cheryl Harris My husband and I renewed our licenses in April and I am still waiting for mine to come through. He got his 4 weeks later. It’s going into month 5. Every month it’s a different excuse. Very frustrating.

Delia Jordaan Just something to consider: Gateway shopping centre has a dedicated taxi parking area. Why can’t the Junction do the same. This will reduce the amount of people needed to walk from the centre to the current taxi rank. I don’t understand why development is still being planned without taking the majority of the population into account.

Michelle Ann Sutherland Blake Traffic control need to be stationed at that intersection between 17:00-18:30, it’s horrific, pedestrians running across the road at any opportunity because the pedestrian traffic signal doesn’t allow enough time for them to cross, pedestrians also need to be educated on how the traffic lights operate. All drivers need to be a little more considerate!

This is a warning that the rates department is on the prowl in Ballito. I have a client who owns a holiday cottage and who uses the cottage predominantly for himself and his extended family. However they do occasionally let the cottage in order to generate some income for a hefty rates bill.

They advertised the cottage on a holiday letting internet site.

This was picked up by the eThekwini rates department and they promptly re-categorized the property from residential to commercial and increased the rates

Cell phones can kill!Dominic Souchon implores drivers not to use cell phones:

I ride a motorcycle around as my daily transport and the number of people driving and using their cell phones is unbelievable. I would be quite happy to say 90% of drivers are fi ddling in one way or another with their phones.

Mothers with kids not strapped in, going through stop streets while texting.

They are going to have an accident sooner or later for being negligent. They have turned in front of me and gone through red lights and even stopped at green lights because they are so busy watching that little screen.

The majority of vehicles are fi tted with Bluetooth. If you don’t have it, get it please.

I have nearly been run over so many times. Please stop trying to kill people on the roads.

What is the law enforcement doing about this, as I see they also talk while driving?

Commemorating Women’s MonthJo Moodley of Tongaat Child Welfare writes:

The Tongaat Child and Family Welfare Society took the opportunity to reach out mainly to the senior citizens of the Tongaat community throughout the month of August.

The following senior citizen clubs were recipients of the empowerment talks that were presented by the social workers of the Society: Hambanathi Senior Citizens Club, Sandfi elds Senior Citizens Club, Flamingo Heights Senior Citizens Club, Buff elsdale Senior Citizens Club and the Watsonia Women’s Circle. Hambanathi Clinic also welcomed the Social Worker’s talks that were directed to the female patients of all ages.

The talks encompassed various topics besides women’s empowerment such as their rights, responsibilities, moral degeneration and on reporting abuse (all forms).

Stress-free propertymanagement

For those who enjoy statistics and analysis and are interested in the South African real

estate sector, the FNB House Price Index is always worth a gander.

1. 96% of sellers have had to drop their selling price

By the second quarter of 2018, 96 of every 100 sellers had to drop their asking price, signifi cantly up from 78% in 2014. According to John Loos, household and property sector strategist at FNB, “the evidence suggests that asking prices, on average, have become less realistic in recent years”.

The survey shows that the estimated asking price drop increased from -8.2% in the fi rst quarter to -9.2% in the second. Therefore, says Loos “in the second quarter

of 2018, our key survey responses related to ‘price realism’ refl ecting an apparent quarterly deterioration in the balance between demand and supply of homes”.

2. The average time of homes on the market is 114 days

The current average, from the bank’s Estate Agent Survey, is 16 weeks and four days, “noticeably” higher than the 11 weeks

and one day in early 2016. The current length of time is not too far off historical highs over the past decade. The 12-week mark is “more or less” what FNB sees as equilibrium.

3. Secondary home ownership has been fl at for roughly fi ve years

“Secondary properties, as expressed as a percentage of total properties owned by individuals, has declined mildly of late,” says Loos. As of July, this number is at 16.24% from 16.31% roughly a year prior. Secondary residential buying (not ownership) has seen a noticeable decline as a percentage of total home buying. In Q2, this number had declined to 9.91% from a medium-term high of 14.47% in the fi rst quarter of last year.

4. Emigration selling of residential property has doubled since 2013

The survey tracks three non-cyclical motives for selling: due to a change in family structure, for safety and security reasons, and in order to emigrate. Loos says the “former two have moved more or less sideways in recent years, but emigration-related selling has risen noticeably

since 2013 on the back of weakening sentiment in South

Africa often related to concerns over its long term policy and

political direction. From a low of 2% of total selling, the emigration

motive has risen to 7.8% of total selling by the second quarter of 2018”.

The North Coast is not immune to these trends and we are certainly

seeing home prices, especially in the luxury market above R8 or R9 million under more pressure. The fact that second home purchases have also slowed down is obviously a fairly concerning trend for

areas such as the North Coast where we rely a fair bit on leisure

and holiday letting investors. The emigration trend is also something we are seeing a lot more of, particularly with more affl uent clients who have the means to consider this option. Fortunately, a big plus is that our property market below the R3.5 million mark seems to be very buoyant and our inquiries have been fl owing in thick and fast. We are not immune to the broader market conditions and we’re thankful to be living and operating in somewhat of a bubble relatively speaking.

As one of the first property managing agencies in the country, Trafalgar is a long-standing family business that has now branched out to Ballito.

Looking after the new branch at Izulu Office Park, as well as the Durban, Port Elizabeth and Knysna offices, is David Schaefer - who took over the business reigns with his brothers Michael and Andrew from their dad Neville Schaefer.

“My dad, together with his associate Harry Lewis, started Trafalgar 50 years ago in Durban. We are now the country’s biggest residential property management company,” said David, who is married to Gail and has two teenagers, Georgia (15) and Karl (12).

One of the key factors in their business philosophy that has kept them at the top of their game is uplifting and growing the people they work with.

“We believe in ongoing training to ensure that everyone from our team to

our trustees remain relevant and self sufficient and know what they can do, have to do and cannot do. Our portfolio managers go through intense training and are up to date on the acts and laws

surrounding our field to ensure we are always on top of the legal side. We are also fully registered with the Estate Agency Affairs Board (“EAAB”), the National Association of Managing Agents (“NAMA”) and Council for Debt Collectors.”

The one-stop shop handles every aspect of property management from residential and commercial letting to financial services.

“All your property management needs fall under one umbrella at Trafalgar, allowing for seamless collaboration. We take the stress out of body corporates by offering specialized insurance and loan options giving them the reassurance that they are being looked after by professionals.”

One of the key factors in their

business philosophy is uplifting and

Scattering hand-made loveElana Wagner

A long-term dream connected three ladies and came to life in the shape of Scatter Studio - an open space to play, make and collaborate.

Meet Emily Smithers, Mariza Nixon and Erin van der Merwe - the proud founders of the recently opened shop at the Litchi Orchard.

“Erin and I were chatting over coff ee about how nice it would be to have a space where we could make things in the back and sell them in the front. The next day, we saw a shop for rent at the Litchi Orchard and heard about Emily whose family own the Orchard,” said Mariza, an inventive YouTube-instructed jeweler known for her sterling silver range called Creõ.

Unknown to them, Emily - a textile designer and genius with soft things who is known for her artistic work called Milk and Honey - wrote a business plan ten years ago for a similar concept to Scatter. They met, clicked and opened up shop over the Easter weekend this year.

“Everything happened so organically - we are very loose about how we handle stuff and just run with what comes.

“Everyone has an area they handle - I have landed myself with the accounting side, Erin does marketing and Mariza works with the customers. We defi nitely all need each other,” said Emily.

Erin, the happiness glue and multi-talented beautifying artist in the trio, said they did not spend any money on the setup of the shop.

“We had our fi rst meeting, wrote down everything we needed and by some miracle either found or were given everything on our list. We didn’t even plan the space, yet everything worked perfectly- it was such a God-given process,” said the bouncy mom of two daughters who is known for her cute custom-made family pillows called quirk.e.

Mariza said Scatter is not their shop - it

is an opportunity for fellow creatives to come together and share their talents.

“Creative people often isolate themselves, because they are nervous to share their skill and be criticised. Working

together means we encourage and inspire each other to be better.”

And the best part - their wide-range of products are totally aff ordable.

“We don’t want to make Scatter incredibly exclusive, we want it to be accessible to the public and make local, unique products available for everyone,” said Erin.

“Customers love meeting the maker and seeing the process - that is the purpose of the space.”

Keep an eye on their Instagram and Facebook page - Scatter Studio - for

Coff ee and Gin at The QuarterOff ering the best of both worlds - a coff ee shop by day and gin bar in the afternoon - The Offi ce offi cially opened its doors at an intimate launch on Friday night, August 31.

Customers sipped on refreshing cocktails, snacked on delicious food while celebrating the opening of the new kid on the block. Situated at The Quarter in Ballito, the business is the brainchild of Anke Simon.

“We saw an opportunity for a place like this and this was a perfect and convenient spot,” she said.

Feel the rush

Prepare to make history

Allan Troskie

If there is one thing South Africans are known for, it is braaing.

However, the shameful fact is that the USA currently holds the world record for the biggest simultaneous braai in history, at 564 people.

This is why Eugene Zietsman, the leader of the South African Braai Army, has tackled the daunting task of getting 700 braaimasters together the day before Heritage Day (‘Braai Day’) to knock the yanks off what is rightfully our perch.

The record attempt is going to be undertaken in partnership with the Round Table Club of Ballito (to receive 30 percent of the takings) and the Ballito Dolphins Rugby Club (another 30 percent) at Sugar Rush Park on September 23.

“We are hoping to get around 700 braaiers and thousands of spectators, so it promises to be one of the biggest parties KZN has ever seen!” Zietsman said.

It is important to note though, that there are stringent rules for breaking a world record and this is most certainly not a ‘bring and braai’.

Spectators will be welcome on the day to come watch, enjoy a drink at the beer garden, buy some food from one of the tasty food stalls and enjoy the live entertainment.

In order to be a part of the record, you need to visit the Braai World Record Attempt Facebook page and follow the link to register. The cost is R400 per entry, but you get loads back, including: a mini braai, tongs, a braaimaster apron, a cap, your braai wors, 1 litre coke, a R1000 voucher for Wild Coolers and a super snazzy lapel pin that you can wear with pride to show you were part of the largest simultaneous braai in history.

If you would like to braai in a team, it is R700 for two, R1200 for a team of four and R1500 for a corporate group.

Check in on the day will start at 10am with the braaimasters lining up at 11.45am and being counted by the Guiness World Record auditors before the action gets underway at 12pm.

“Don’t bring your own food and drinks, there will be both cooked and raw food on sale (in case you want to braai).”

For more information, visit the Braai World Record Attempt Facebook page, or contact Eugene Zietsman at 084 677 7799.

Hyundai’s success startlesBy Gavin Foster

IN the two decades that Hyundai cars have been available in South Africa the Korean carmaker hasn't put a foot wrong. There were some early legal issues, with the private importer who initially introduced the brand being accused of tax evasion early in the new millennium, but the products' quality shone through loud and clear.

After Hyundai Automotive SA arrived a few years later the company for more than a decade refused to release sales gures through the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) but anybody with half an eye open could see how the number of the Korean cars on SA's roads was escalating. About three years ago Hyundai relented and started

‘...it now successfully competes on quality and speci cation level’

reporting sale gures, and the results con rmed that the brand had become a major player in SA. A glance at the returns for the rst eight months of this year shows that in terms of passenger car sales Hyundai is the third best seller nationally, with 16,940 new cars leaving showrooms.

Volkswagen tops the log with 34,084 new cars sold and Toyota lies second with 32,576. Behind Hyundai is Ford with 12,168, and Renault closes off the top ve with 11,415. Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Kia, Nissan and Mazda are all in the seven and eight thousands, and the remaining 15 listed importers and manufacturers share 29,490 between them.

That Hyundai, a car manufacturer that only ventured into the automotive business in 1967 and rst arrived in South Africa less than twenty years ago

can have achieved so much in such a short time is astonishing. It's also important to note that while the marque at rst relied on cutthroat pricing as its biggest marketing tool, it now successfully competes on quality and speci cation level more than anything else.

A choice of seven Tucsons

Hyundai's Tucson and Creta soft-roaders are the company's third and fourth best-selling models after the Grand i10 and i20, and both recently received facelifts with new body detailing, dashboards and transmissions.

Two new derivatives were also introduced in the Tucson range, as were a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and an eight-speed auto gearbox. The full LED headlights and taillights, uplifted front bumper, revised skid plate,

new exhaust tailpipes and new front grille are the most visible external changes.

There are now seven Tucson derivatives in three trim levels using three engines - two-litre petrol and diesel units with the auto transmission, and a 1.6 litre TGDI Elite with the DCT. Pricing ranges between R399,900 and R569,900.

The smaller and more affordable Creta has proved very popular in SA, selling more than 8,000 since its 2017 launch. The three model lineup remains unchanged, with all bearing the Executive trim title.

The car comes with a 90kW 1.6-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission, the same engine with a six-speed auto gearbox, and a 1.6-litre 94kW turbodiesel also with the six-speed auto box. Pricing ranges from

R339,900 for the 1.6 Executive manual to R399,900 for the 1.6 Executive turbodiesel auto.

Both Hyundai's soft roaders are beautifully put together and extremely well equipped. Neither is available in four-wheel-drive, but both are very dirt-road capable, which is about as much as most buyers are ever going to ask of a crossover SUV. I personally nd the Creta more appealing than the Tucson, but you may not agree. If you're looking for a high-quality well-equipped crossover SUV it would be worth your while to take a close look at both.

All models come with ve-year/90,000km service plans, ve-year/150,000km warranties

plus additional two-year/50,000km drivetrain warranties. Roadside assistance for ve years or 150,000km is part of the Hyundai deal.

THE rst new Suzuki Jimny 4x4 in two decades was released at the recent Johannesburg Festival of Motoring and will be at dealers in November.

Pricing is said to start at R265,000 for the Suzuki Jimny 1.5 4x4 GA Manual, R300,000 for the Suzuki Jimny 1.5 4x4 GLX Manual and R320,000 for the Suzuki Jimny 1.5 4x4 GLX Auto (estimated).

The new model is built on a new ladder-frame chassis with a

patented “X”member between the two rigid axles for 1.5 times the torsional rigidity of its predecessor. Both axles remain rigid, a boon in sand and mud driving; and with the addition of new coil springs and shock absorbers the Jimny now has a 210mm ground clearance, 20mm more than before.

Suzuki has tted its modern K15B 1.5-litre four cylinder petrol engine which replaces the 1.3-litre M13A engine of the previous model

and delivers 75kW at 6,000rpm and 130Nm at 4,000rpm.

The engine is mated to a ve-speed manual gearbox and an optional four-speed automatic gearbox in GLX speci cation.

All the new Jimny models are also tted with a 4x4 system called AllGrip Pro, this allows the driver to comfortably switch between 4x2 (rear-wheel drive), 4x4 high and 4x4 low range with a secondary gear lever.

Haval’s rst 4WD breaks ground

Haval has launched its rst four-wheel drive model on local shores. Joining the South African range of its two-wheel drive small SUV derivatives - the 1.5-litre H1, H2 and H6 - the large new 7-seater H9 is powered by a 2-litre (180kW/350Nm) turbopetrol engine, also found in the H6C. The engine, transmission, suspension, and body are installed on a high rigidity frame. It comes with a multi-link rear suspension and independent double-wishbone front suspension. The H9 2.0 Petrol 4WD Luxury is priced at R599,900 including a ve-year/100,000km warranty and service plan.

THE ability to punch out of the gate rst and build blistering lap times is what the CRF450R has been all about for the last two years, and performance rises yet again for 2019.

Honda Racing Corporation has extracted considerably more power and torque from the engine by ne-tuning the cylinder head and valve-gear without sacri cing low-rpm tractability.

Three-mode HRC Launch Control is an addition, helping novice or expert riders alike to hit the mark from the starting gate every time. A shift-sensor enables the use of speci c ignition maps for each gear, and PGM-FI fuel injection system has been optimised to inject twice

Spectator treat awaits race fans at Dezzi MOTORBIKE fans are in for a treat on Saturday as there won't just be club car and bike racing but also Classic Superbikes and Historic Motorcycles. Among the classic racing motorcycles that will be in action will be Allan Barker showboating on the ex-Rod Gray chain-drive Formula One Yamaha XS1100 that won the 1980 SA F1 title and set new lap records at every circuit that year. As a special treat, ‘70s and ‘80s GP star Alan North, will be doing a parade lap on the Kenny Roberts KR 500 3-cylinder 2-stroke Grand Prix bike from around the turn of the century. Pictured is Allan Barker on his 1980s Bimota Kawasaki stalking Mac McKenzie on a trick Triumph Bonneville from last year. Tickets R80 or R150 for family of four.

per cycle. The oil pump capacity has

been uprated, and the clutch lifter and pressure plate redesigned. Power has thus been improved by 2.4 hp at 9,500rpm and torque by 2Nm at 7,500 without adversely affecting low-down performance:

The 2019 model engine's power and torque curves are a considerable improvement on those of the previous design from 3,000 rpm upwards, and the over-rev capability between turns has also been enhanced.

The aluminium twin-spar frame is essentially unchanged but has been made slightly lighter, as has the swingarm, while a new front brake caliper also shaves vital grams off the

compact package. The 49mm Showa

upside-down forks and rear shock absorber

have also been breathed upon, and the Renthal racing tapered handlebars now offer more

fore-and-aft adjustment.

Learning for the future

Grade three to seven pupils from RA Padayachee Primary and their teachers stepped into the astounding world of Artifi cial Intelligence (AI) during an after-school Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education programme, the AI Family Challenge.

STE(A)M educational specialist, I-Innovate brought another 21st century learning programme to South Africa to open up opportunities to under-served school communities for pupils to develop the talents and skills needed in the digital age.

I-Innovate has partnered with U.S. developers, Curiosity Machine to bring the

AI Family Challenge to South Africa with the aim of ultimately reaching 20 000 pupils in disadvantaged communities around the world.

Pupils, teachers and family members get together to explore fascinating facets of AI technologies such as machine learning, speech recognition, prediction models, autonomous vehicles and neural networks.

The curriculum is hands-on so that vital digital skills such as computational thinking, electrical engineering, mobile computing and robotics can be developed in a fun, interactive learning environment.

Exploring roboticsSpring kicked off with Curro Mount Richmore’s third annual Robotics Competition recently.

Five schools entered this year’s competition and Neha Manilal and Noah de Beer were the only mixed team and they received fi rst prize in the Explorer category for the 10-12 year old children. The winners will join the rest of the SA winners at the nationals in October in Gauteng and the

top pupils will then have the amazing opportunity to compete in the international competition held in Thailand.

It has been a bumper third term of sport in both the Junior and Senior College at Ashton.

Senior College head of sport Craig Currin said they have performed exceptionally well in the Rugby 7’s festivals, and the U14A team won four matches, lost four and drew two.

“These festivals are played against some of the bigger rugby schools like Clifton, Kuswag, Felixton, Grantleigh, Ferram, Amanzimtoti High and Kloof,” said Currin.

The U18A teams won 10 of their matches and only lost six, with both teams making it through every semi-fi nal in the series of tournaments played. The U18A team also clinched the Plate at the Hillcrest 7’s fi nal.

On the hockey front, their focus shifted to indoor hockey this term, and the fi rst team won the coveted fi rst place in the league, with the U16’s taking a fourth and the U14’s taking the third spot for the season.

“With Ashton’s new International Indoor

Hockey Arena almost complete, the performance of our teams will be enhanced even further for the future,”

The fi rst team will now play Northwood C for promotion into the A league.

The Action Netball girls will be playing the fi nals this week, with the U15A playing for bronze, U16A also going for bronze and seconds in the playoffs for gold.

Matt Walters, a Form 2 student has also made his mark in the golfi ng world and has become Ashton’s fi rst student to be selected

for the KZN A Schools team. Matt has won various junior championships, including the Durban Country Club Junior Championship and the Alfred County Championship at Port Shepstone. The Ashton fi rst golf team won fi ve of their six fi xtures fi nishing second in the league.

Junior College head of sport Gary Schneider said with a record 28 Junior College hockey teams, it has been very rewarding to watch these youngsters play their very best

to make the A sides. “The fact that we are able to play on

our own Astro has made a tremendous difference in the performance of the teams,” said Schneider.

These teams are now competing against very competitive schools in Durban like Glenashley, St Henry’s, Curro Hillcrest and Reddam Umhlanga. With 173 matches played so far this season, 84 have been wins.

Footy approaching league fi nals

Get your golfi ng gear ready and head down to the greens at Darnall Country Club next month for two exciting golfi ng events.

The Country Club’s annual golf day will take place on October 13.

This will be the golf club’s fi rst major fundraising initiative.

Funds raised will be utilised to improve the golf course, promote youth development and assist local needy charity organisations.

Businesses can support this event by sponsoring tees/greens, prizes or cash donations.

Companies can display their banners and products at the sponsored areas.

For prices, banking details and more information, contact Babs Pillay on 083 629 5600 or Kenneth Ashington on 079 876 2068.

The second exciting event is the Darnall Primary School Golf Day.

This four-ball-American Scramble

competition will take place on Saturday, October 27, followed by prize giving at the club.

Entrance fees for golfers are R250 each and includes a light lunch for each golfer and their caddie. This however does not include caddie fees or golf cart hire.

There will be a fl eamarket, with a stall fee of only R50 for those wanting to sell their goodies, as well as loads of great prizes up for grabs.

Tee boxes and greens can be sponsored at R500 each.

All funds raised will be used by the school’s sport department for upgrades.

If you would like to sponsor prizes, arrangements can be made for collection. Alternatively they can be dropped off at the school at 77 Hulett Road.

To reserve your spot contact Vicky Appelcryn on 082 558 7055 or email [email protected].

Calling all golfers!

A swing above the rest

Good rain in Ballito dampened the local tennis a bit. The ladies Wednesday league completed another round of tennis during the week and all three teams were in action.

We will wait for the league to end this week before we provide the fi nal report.

The upset in the US Open ladies fi nal with Naomi Osaka beating favourite Serena Williams is worth a mention. Naomi is the fi rst ever Japanese women to reach a grand slam fi nal. Her victory was however slightly

subdued due to the controversy surrounding a scuffl e between Serena and the chair umpire. Irrespective of your take on the incident, you have to give Naomi the credit of putting herself with some great tennis into the position to be able to win, irrespective of the events.

This made me think of an incident in a tough men’s doubles match where one of the UCC men were not happy with a sequence of suspect line calls that resulted in him losing his serve. After verbally and visually showing his disapproval, sister Maxi Ferandi commented from the sideline “get over it!”

Remember to join us at social tennis every Saturday from 2pm.

Umhlali Country Club’s golf masters are leading the pack - upping their status and scooping up awards.

Pro Shop manager and coach Brendan Erasmus earned his Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) Professional Class A status, while golf manager Derick Reinke was awarded AAA status.

“You can upgrade your status every three years by earning continued professional development (CPD) points. These points are awarded for attending seminars and playing in tournaments,” said Erasmus, who grew up on the golf course and has been playing since grade one.

The 22-year-old golfer has been with the club for just over three years now and coaches the club’s Junior Development Academy as well as private clients.

“On average we have about 15 kids who come from underprivileged local areas in the academy. Golf is a good, healthy escape for them and teaches them commitment, respect and manners. Currently three of our kids play for KZN. If they show they are willing to work, it can open a lot of doors and opportunities for them.”

The club was nominated in four categories at the annual Club Management Association of SA (CMASA) awards and while they came runner up for three of the awards, they took home the Green Award.

Reinke, who has raked up numerous awards under his name over the years, also won KZN PGA Professional of the Year 2018.

“The green award was awarded based on how environmentally friendly and consciously we run the golf course. Golf courses are often seen as massive areas that just use up a lot of water. We make sure the water usage and chemicals on the grass are monitored and controlled carefully, we plant only indigenous trees and we make sure our dams are healthy,” said Reinke, who has been with the club for nearly eight years and won PGA Manager of the Year last year and KZN PGA Professional of the Year 2016.

He said the key to this success is their attention to detail and value received by their members.

“Golf is a struggling business at the moment, so we strive to give people that added value in order to enhance their experience with us making the price tag that comes with golf worthwhile.”

Brendan Erasmus and Derick Reinke with the recently won Green Award for their commitment and support to environmental sustainability.

2018

After a week of reasonably good weather, there was a dramatic turn on Saturday morning when the storms arrived bringing heavy rain, snow in some areas plus hail. After all the rain then came the fresh to strong South Westerly wind on Sunday morning that brought the cold air blowing off the snow. It will probably be a few days before the sea settles enough for anglers to be able to cast their lines again.

During the week the sea was quite calm but the surf was rather unsettled and the waves were pounding on the sandbanks making for some diffi cult angling conditions in some areas. As expected, there were few anglers to be seen on the beaches and catches were few along the coastline. So far this month the fi shing has been disappointing in the view of some of the regular anglers and they said that they have been scratching around looking for fi sh. A few small shad have been caught on some mornings but in general, not much has been happening. It has been mainly small blacktail and the odd stone bream that has been caught and there was one small copper bream caught in the Tongaat area

one morning. The regular anglers in Umdloti have

managed a few shad plus a couple of stumpies and the odd kob but they said there have not been any fi reworks as yet and sea conditions have really been favorable for lengthy periods of angling. Normally at this time of the year, this area produces some decent fi sh but it has been quiet for the past couple of seasons as have most of the other local fi shing spots. Umhlanga and Durban North beaches have also been quiet this past week.

During the next couple of days dirty water will probably fl ow into the sea again and although the dirty water is normally considered the angler’s curse, it could be a blessing in disguise and fi sh could move inshore to search for food. In the past I have caught some of my best fi sh in discolored water and on one morning I caught a nice kingfi sh in chocolate colored water when I was not expected to catch anything at all. The kob usually hunt for food in discolored water so anglers that fi sh in the dark could be in for some excellent fi shing in the near future. The name of the game will be patience and reading the water looking for the ideal fi shing spots. A channel next to a sandbank could produce unexpected results and the correct choice of bait will be important. Chokka or crab could be the way to go as fi llet baits could be stripped by the

many peekers in the sea at present.Fishing along the South Coast was

also a bit on the quiet side last week with mostly small shad being caught by the early morning anglers. Anglers found that the shad moved inshore right at fi rst light but moved away after a short time then the fi shing became quiet. The beaches became deserted quite early in the mornings just after the shad moved off and this meant that there was not a lot happening after the early run of fi sh. A number of grey sharks were caught in some areas but I think that the appearance of these sharks also helped in chasing the anglers. The South Coast beaches are still crowded at fi rst light in the mornings so it is not advisable to plan a fi shing trip as yet.

Some of the local anglers said that many of their favorite fi shing spots amongst the rocks are still sanded up and this has made fi shing more diffi cult. One of the locals told me that he had heard of a couple of fi sh being caught in the Salt Rock area but he could not confi rm what species.

I predict that anglers should get down to the beach when the sea settles because the fi shing could change and become productive again.Sealice

It was a beautiful, cool day on the links for the Waynol Anti Narcotics and Christian Manor golf day at Umhlali Country Club last week.

R52 000 was raised for the good works they undertake.

Waynol works with all types of addicts, investigates child traffi cking and provides free outpatient programs for whoonga and nyope dependents.

Waynol founder Craig Falconer said his journey with the fi ght against drugs started when his brother and sister both died of drug overdoses within the same week. To date,

he said, he has lost more than 120 friends to drugs.

“What we are also seeing now is extortion from drug dealers.

They will take someone’s child (an addict) and keep them

in a crack house until the parents agree to

pay a ransom to get them back. I have personally had to

walk into those places armed to get the kids out, while the police do nothing,” he said.

On the day South African boxing legend Brian Mitchell joined the crew to enjoy some golf and auction off some memorabilia to help Waynol’s work.

Mitchell is a former professional boxer and quite possibly the best South African boxer of all time. Mitchell turned pro in 1981 and captured the WBA and Lineal Junior Lightweight Title in 1986 with a 10th-round KO over Alfredo Layne. He defended the title a record 12 times, and never lost a title fi ght.
