Several concerts have been planned to help those in South Africa suffering because of the drought.

The concerts are being organised by Môregloed resident Lydia Veldman.

“Following the ongoing drought in some parts of our country, I decided to approach the churches in the Moot to get involved in a singing and talent evening,” she said.

“The sole purpose is to raise cash as bridging capital for the nearly 10 000 farms in great distress.”

These concerts will take place on 23 February and 1 March.

There was also a concert planned for April, Veldman said.

“A few months ago, two Wellington ladies decided to launch a ‘Box for a Farmer Wife’ project,” she said.

“The idea was to pack some special products in a shoe box.

“Products that would delight a farmer’s

In 2003 is Schabort by die verkeerspolisie aangestel.

woman’s heart and encourage her to keep going.”

She said thanks to this project, she was inspired to help.

“I don’t believe these two ladies really realised that this project would spread like wildfi re across the country,” she said.

“In our own Moot, thousands of boxes were collected.

“Not only did the box project mean something to many farmer women, but to us who packed it, it meant even more. We realised that we can still stand together, cooperate and pray and have compassion on our own people in need,” she added.

She said about 10 000 farms were hit by the current drought.

“Only a third of all livestock herds are still alive,” she said.

“If it is a good rainy season, it will take another three years for the pasture and herds to be up to standard.”

She said the farmers have already surrendered all their medical aid or policies to purchase animal feed.

“So they have no bridging capital,” she said.

Veldman said she was positive about this project.

“I am very excited about this project and believe that it will be a big success.”

She said Moot vir Christus, who is a group made up of all the church leaders in the Moot, were supporting her in this project.

She said any help would be appreciated.“As a community, let us stand together –

across church boundaries – to enrich and help each other.”

A new home for Oom Tommy Kayla van Petegem

A team effort between several interested parties from Pretoria has led to a homeless man from the Moot fi nding a new home.

Tommy Johnson, or Oom Tommy, as he is known, had become a familiar face in the area.

“I fi rst saw Oom Tommy sleeping under a tree in Terblanche Street about a month ago,” said Liza Janse van Rensburg from the Villieria police station.

Since then, it has been a rollercoaster ride until Johnson fi nally found his new home. “Oom Tommy is deaf and mute. He also suffers from dementia,” she said.

“So every time we got him to a place of safety, he would walk away not long afterwards. However, we quickly caught up with him and helped where we could.”

She said a WhatsApp group was even opened to help with Johnson’s care.

A group based in the north of Pretoria, People Do Care, also assisted.

“So many people were involved with Oom Tommy and his well-being,” she said. About three weeks ago, Johnson

went missing again and was found with a big cut on his leg. “He needed about 50 stitches,” said Janse van Rensburg.

She thanked Life Support 24, who helped Johnson with his wound in their own time.

It was then that Uncle Ben’s Den, based in Daspoort, was contacted.

He was taken in by the shelter about two weeks ago, said Ronel van Dyk, its owner. “When Oom Tommy arrived at Uncle Ben’s Den, he did not want to know anything about staying,” she said.

“He had just come out of hospital and was still covered in blood.

“He allowed us to treat his wound but wanted to immediately leave again.”

She said with Johnson being deaf and mute, communication was a problem.

“We then called Maria du Preez, a deaf resident of Uncle Ben’s Den, to attempt to talk to him with help of sign language,” she said.

“She had to persuade him to stay for three days so we could treat his wound. He just said ‘No!’”

“He is stubborn, but later he realised he was not going to win this battle.”

Vagrants will be evicted from a dilapidated building in the Moot as it is set to be demolished.

The building, which belongs to the Tshwane metro, on the corner of Steve Biko Road and Hertzog Street has become an eyesore for Pretoria motorists who use the road daily.

The building is right across the street from the old Meat King building, which Rekord has reported on in the past.

“Everyone who drives past this building every day always wonders what exactly is going on,” said local ward councillor Elmarie Linde.

Relief as end in sight to ‘eyesore’ building

Local ward councilor Elmarie Linde.

She said residents have been complaining about the building.

“Residents are complaining about the vagrants there and that they make a lot of noise. There have also been complaints about drug dealing,” she said.

“There are also no sanitary facilities, which brings a risk of all sorts of diseases.

“For the past four years, the Tshwane metro has been in the process of eviction in an attempt to get a better occupier for the place.

“The previous tenant sold antique vehicles.

“The metro has been involved in a legal tussle with him for a very long time.

“An eviction order was later obtained.”Meanwhile, the vehicles were removed

after a lot of them were vandalised, she said.Linde said the Tshwane metro also put out

the building on tender four years ago, which was obtained.

“The condition, however, was that the premises were not occupied when the new tenants moved in,” she said.

“Meanwhile, vagrants have taken over the empty building and have done more and more damage to the building.”

She said the vagrants who lived there were mostly informal recyclers who also slept at the premises.

“The Tshwane metro has appointed a law fi rm to get an eviction order to notify the vagrants,” she said.

“The eviction order was obtained and must now be served.”

She said once the building was vacant, the new tenant would demolish it.

“The frustration is that it took a very long time, especially because there was legal action involved.

“However, we cannot let the Moot become an area that is no longer accessible to everyone and where residents do not feel safe.”

Pretoria Moot police recently welcomed a new face, who is ready to make a difference in the community, to the station.

Constable Lehanda Coertze (23) offi cially started at the station in December 2019 after she fi nished her studies at the police college.

“I started with college in 2018,” she said. When asked, Coertze said she always

knew she wanted to be a police offi cer.“It was always at the back of my head to

pursue a career in policing,” she said. She said her “big dream” was to work in

the K9 unit.“However, you have to start as a constable

and work your way up from there,” she said.Coertze said she was currently working in

crime prevention.“The police are still busy with their ‘safer

festive season’ operations, which I am a part of,” she said.

She said she was excited for her career.“My career can go in any direction. As a

police offi cer, we do not really know what to expect,” she said.

“However, I am very excited because I believe that there is a reason why I am here. I know I can only move into a good future.”

Coertze said she has been a Moot resident all her life.

“I attended school at Laerskool Mayville and Hoërskool Wonderboom,” she said.

“Which is why I am enjoying every day at work. The Moot is like a second home because I know the people and it is only a

pleasure for me to work here.”Police spokesperson Captain Anton

Breedt said he was happy with the new placement at their police station.

“It is always a positive thing for a police station to get a fresh face,” he said.

“It helps build morale and they also provide a new outlook on the way things are done.”

He said there were fi ve constables that fi nished their studies at the police college last year.

“The other four will start on 3 February at the police stations they were appointed to,” he said.

“They will be placed in Soshanguve, north of Pretoria and in Johannesburg.”

Breedt wished Coertze and the four other constables good luck and all the best on their new journey.

“So far I have really enjoyed my time here,” she said.

OPINION www.rekordmoot.co.za6 PRETORIA MOOT REKORD JANUARY 31, 2020

saak stel (34) - meer as oorwinnaars is (37).

Lees weer Paulus se jubellied in Romeine 8

Henk Bertschinger writes:As detailed in this week’s Rekord potholes are a huge nuisance on many South African roads and frequently lead to accidents as a result of people trying to avoid them.

As mentioned by one person,

they can be prevented by suitable road maintenance.

One of the best and easiest ways of preventing the development of potholes is to seal cracks in the road.

This can be achieved by simply pouring hot tar into the cracks.

Even highly developed countries like Switzerland do this. Not only is it effective but it can also create jobs with no fancy equipment required.

All you need is a drum of hot tar and tins for pouring the tar into cracks.

Have a heart and wear a sole. That is the new slogan for the Childhood Cancer Foundation (Choc).

The slogan is aimed at motivating people to wear fl ip-fl ops for a day.

“It’s safe to say that the day a parent hears their child has cancer is probably the most unnatural day of their lives,” said Taryn Seegers of Choc.

“From that day forward, nothing is the same. Most of us can’t even bear to face the thought, and luckily for the majority of us, we will never have to.

“But those who do face this unimaginable diagnosis are truly the bravest of the brave, especially the ones at the heart of the battle; the young souls who undergo treatment after treatment, fi ghting to survive,” she said.

Which is why Flip-Flop Day will launch for the fi rst time on 14 February.

My tuin lyk altyd vrolik.”

“From boardrooms to classrooms, the beaches of Cape Town to the streets of Maboneng, Baardskeerdersbos to Bloemfontein, Hogsback to Houghton, the aim is to leave no stone unturned in fi nding

supporters who want to set their 10 toes free by paying R10 and fl ipping on some fl ops to show their support for this amazing cause,” she said.

Choc CEO Carl Queiros said fl ip-fl ops were a South African wardrobe prerequisite.

“The journey that children and teenagers

with cancer face is in no way light-hearted at all, but creating an annual event like Flip-Flop Day that raises money towards childhood cancer awareness, is defi nitely a time to be joyous and needs a fully-loaded feel good factor,” he said.

“We hope to see the public come out in full force, in their fl ip-fl ops, on 14 February, to show some love for our young ones.”

To wear fl ip-fl ops on the day, will only cost R10.

“We may never be able to walk in the shoes of those fi ghting childhood cancer, but we can certainly walk in a pair of fl ip-fl ops for a day to show them we will never back down in the fi ght against childhood cancer,” Seegers said.

Choc is a registered and internationally recognised NPO whose aim is to provide life changing and all-embracing support programmes to children and teenagers and their families from the get-go, once a diagnosis has been given.

musiek maak of kitaar speel nie.

Movies now on the circuitIt’s time to put pedal to the metal at Nu Metro cinemas in Pretoria this weekend, including Mams Mall in Mamelodi.

The Bad Boys, Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence), return to their roots in a highly anticipated new action attraction: criss-crossing sea, land and air for an edge-of-your-seat thrill ride of note. Experience Bad Boys For Life in the larger-than-life Xtreme or multi-sensory 4DX cinemas at Nu Metro Menlyn Park.

Bombshell, the award-winning, Oscar-nominated fi lm about the Fox News scandal, starts showing in Nu Metro’s luxurious “in-cinema dining” VIP cinemas at Parkview and Menlyn.

Or, take the kids for Arctic Justice – the new animated adventure for families to enjoy on the Big Screen at Nu Metro Woodlands.

Girls’ Night OutLadies, the world of beauty is about

to get ugly… Bookings are now open for a special pre-release screening of the hilarious new comedy Like A Boss.

Bad Boys For Life (16 LSV)Showing at all Nu Metro cinemasMike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett

are back together for one last ride. Marcus is now a police inspector and Mike is in a midlife crisis. They unite again when an Albanian mercenary, whose brother they killed, promises them an important bonus.

Bombshell (16 LPSV)Showing at Nu Metro Parkview and

Menlyn ParkStarring South Africa’s very own

Charlize Theron (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award) alongside Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie, the sensational fi lm is based on the real-life chain of events of the Fox News scandal, which saw multiple women accuse former Fox News CEO and chairman Roger Ailes of sexual harassment.

“One of the most compelling stories of the #MeToo movement is told unfl inchingly, empathetically and authentically, with Charlize Theron completely nailing the knotty character of Megyn Kelly,” says Empire magazine.

Arctic Justice (PG V)Showing at Nu Metro Woodlands

and Menlyn ParkA ragtag group of Arctic misfi ts has

to band together to stop Von Walrus’s sinister plans and save the day in this new animated adventure.

Jeremy Renner, Heidi Klum, James Franco, John Cleese, Anjelica Huston and Alec Baldwin are just some of the big names who lend their voices to this story about a fox trying to prove himself for a small job, but ending up having to save the world!

Rekord experiences many problems with clients requesting us to comply within any possible way, to give preference to their advertisements versus that of other clients. This leads to advertisements starting with A1, Attention, or 000. It makes no sense to the reader and prevents them from making logical conclustions as to what the content of the advertisements is about.

Trouens, reeds as o.14-speler was hy as Suid-Afrika se beste gekeur.

Hy is verlede jaar in ’n baie kompeterende omgewing aangewys as Hoërskool Waterkloof se beste tennisspeler én hy was Gauteng-Noord se beste o.19-speler.

Vir navrae kontak Botha by 083-456-3646.

Taking place at the Tuks Athletics Stadium at the University of Pretoria this coming Saturday (1 February), the Twizza Super School Series Grand Finale has elicited a very exciting battle between athletics giants from the North versus those in the South.

The Twizza Super School Series is a new initiative that came into being in 2019.

Two knockout events were held in Pretoria and the Western Cape, respectively, after which the top schools were named for the fi nals in Pretoria.

In the girls schools competition all eyes will be on Afrikaans Hoër Meisieskool and Hoërskool Menlopark. However, La Rochelle Girl’s High School and Paarl Girls High School should not be underestimated while Prestige College and Helpmekaar Kollege have also proven to be worthy opponents.

According to Maritza Coetzee, director of athletics at Afrikaans Hoër Meisieskool Pretoria, it’s an honour to qualify and compete against top schools in the fi nale.

“The series is a great platform for athletes who are still at school, to show what they’ve got, while competing against the best athletes in the country.

“Our goal is to be at our best on the day and give it our all,” she said.

Marianna Schoeman, athletics co-ordinator at La Rochelle Girls’ High School in Paarl, said the series is a great opportunity

to set the base for the upcoming season. “Our athletes can improve their

performances. We are very excited to go to the inaugural Grand Finale where athletics will be taken to the next level,” she explained.

In the boy’s section, Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool from Pretoria and Hoërskool Menlopark will also be top contenders for the title.

However, there are several other participants from Gauteng and the Western Cape who will ensure tough competition and contribute to great excitement.

Nico Erasmus, deputy headmaster at Hoërskool Menlopark, also thinks the series is a great idea.

“It gives much-needed exposure to athletes. Participating nationally for your school can only have a positive effect on young athletes,” said Erasmus.

Lance Coertzen, Twizza Group marketing manager, said they cannot wait to crown South Africa’s best athletics school.

“The series has provided us with an excellent platform to support a sport that we believe in, while creating awareness of the Twizza brand among schools, scholars and parents. We invite athletes and supporters to enjoy track and fi eld at its best.

“We look forward to the special moments that will be experienced at the Grand Finale,” he concluded.

Exciting athletics on way in Twizza finale

The Twizza Super School Series Grand Finale will take place at the Tuks Athletics stadium on Saturday, 1 February.

Russia’s national rugby team recently visited South Africa on a short tour. They visited Pretoria after playing a match against the Sharks team in Durban as part of the latter’s SuperRugby preparation.

Dié vier spoedvrate se tyd was

Star fl yhalf Handré Pollard, who had a great season for both the Bulls and the Springboks last year, was named South Africa’s SuperRugby player of 2019 last week.

And Pollard’s Springbok teammate and tough-as-nails loose forward, Pieter-Steph du Toit, became only the third player in history to take the title as SA Rugby player of the year for a third time.

With this achievement he follows in the footsteps of two Blue Bulls legends, Naas Botha and Brian Habana, while he was also named World Rugby player of the year in December 2019.

Rassie Erasmus and the Springboks were also honoured for a brilliant 2019, when they won the Rugby World Cup and Rugby Championship, as well as the World Rugby Awards for coach and team of the year, by walking away with the same awards in South Africa.

Another winner from the Boks’ RWC squad was Herschel Jantjies, who was named South Africa’s young player of the year.

Pollard was the top points’ scorer at the Rugby World Cup in Japan. His 194 season points were also the most in the 2019 SuperRugby tournament as the Springbok pivot helped steer the Bulls to the quarter-fi nals.

Springbok sevens rugby captain, Siviwe Soyizwapi, who had a stellar year for the Blitzboks, was named South Africa’s sevens rugby player of the year.

Jaden Hendrikse, a key fi gure in the South African u.20s’ World Rugby u.20 Championship campaign in Argentina last year, was named Junior Springbok player of the year and Aseza Hele is the Springbok Women’s achiever of the year.

One dazzling performance after another in the Currie Cup gave Cheetahs hooker, Joseph Dweba, the accolade as Currie Cup player of 2019, while Cody Basson, loose forward of the Griffons won the Currie Cup First Division player of the year award.

The Club player of the year was won for a record third time by the evergreen Leon du Plessis of Rustenburg Impala.

Two local golf stars, JC Ritchie and Jaco Prinsloo, made history this past weekend when they claimed the 2020 Gauteng Team Championship hosted by Dainfern, becoming the fi rst team to defend this title since its inception in 2018.

Ritchie and Prinsloo signed for a tournament total of 25-under-par 191 to claim a two-stroke victory over the team Jaco Ahlers and Vaughn Groenewald after rounds of 61, 68 and 62.

The duo, both affi liated with The Els Copperleaf Golf Club in Centurion, came into the fi nal round leading by a single stroke at 15-under par. A bogey on the fi rst hole marked a shaky start for the defending champions but what followed next was nothing short of spectacular.

The bogey was quickly forgotten as they made birdie on the next hole.

Two pars later something clicked. Five consecutive birdies followed as they turned in 31 but that was not the end of it. A birdie on the 10th was quickly followed by an eagle on the 12th hole. Then birdies on the 17th and 18th holes sealed the victory. for Prinsloo and Ritchie.

“We are very chuffed to have defended this title. I think we were expecting a bit of a charge from the guys who were coming behind us. We are happy we managed to turn on the fi reworks and bring it home,” said Ritchie after the tournament.

Prinsloo was equally ecstatic to become part of only the fi rst team to successfully defend this title.

INSIDE

Abrie van Staden Abrie van Staden atletiekbyeenkomsatletiekbyeenkoms

Bulls head coach, Pote Human, has selected his 40-man squad to do duty in this year’s SuperRugby tournament.

The squad is the perfect blend of experience and youth with Human opting for 22 forwards and 18 backs.

The Bulls start their campaign with two tough South African derbies away from home. Next Friday they will face the Sharks in Durban, while the Stormers will be waiting for them a week later on 8 February in Cape Town.

The team’s fi rst home game is on 22 February at Loftus Versfeld against the Blues of New Zealand.

Burger Odendaal will captain the team

while marshalling the inside centre channel and will have international experience to call on from Loftus favourite Morné Steyn returning to Pretoria after several seasons in France.

The Bulls will also get to enjoy the services of Tongan international, Nafi Tuitavake.

With 18 test matches for his home country under his belt, he returns to SuperRugby after plying his trade in England. He played for the Crusaders in 2014.

This will be the fi rst time in the Bulls’ history that they will use the services of a player form overseas.

The backs have several new youthful

players that have proved their worth for other teams but now have the opportunity to do the same for the Bulls at senior level. Guys such as Chris Smith and Richard Kriel will be eagerly waiting in the wings.

New faces among the forwards include former Bull and Springbok lock, Juandré Kruger; Scottish capped Josh Strauss and Namibian hooker Louis van der Westhuizen who all bolster a forward pack that is brimming with younger players who want to leave their mark on the tournament including Muller Uys, Jeandré Rudolph and Abongile Nonkontwana.

The Titans will start the Momentum 1-Day series with much confi dence this coming weekend after their brilliant

performance last week, when they crushed the leaders on the log, the Lions, by 10 wickets.

This improved their chances of winning the 4-Day Domestic Series

this season. Their victory over their neighbours

from across the Jukskei River is so much more impressive considering that Grant Thomson and his

teammates managed to achieve it in just three days.

The 4-Day Domestic Series will now be paused for about two

months to complete the Momentum 1-Day series, which starts this Friday.

After their victory last week, Mandla Mashimbyi’s team is now in second place on the log in the 4-Day Domestic Series, only eight points behind the Lions. This gives them a realistic chance of still being crowned champion in this tournament.

Outstanding bowling by the Titans, in which men such as Hardus Viljoen, Ryan Cartwright and Dayyaan Galiem excelled, assisted by outstanding batting by, among others, Theunis de Bruyn, Grant Thomson and veteran Farhaan Behardien, made this performance possible.

Between Viljoen (3/51 and 2/59), Cartwright (2/42 and 3/46) and Galiem (1/24 and 2/61) they took 13 wickets in the match.

After the Titans bowlers dismissed the Lions in their fi rst innings for just 168 runs, contributions with the bat by De Bruyn (120), Thomson (87) and Behardien (43) enabled the men from Centurion to build a lead of 224 in their fi rst innings.

Another superb bowling display by the Titans’ bowlers limited the Lions to just 231 runs in their second innings.

It meant that the Titans batsmen had to score only eight runs at the end of the third day’s play to clinch victory.

Tony de Zorzi and Victor Mahlangu only needed to face 10 balls before De Zorzi scored the winning runs.

It completed a defi ning win, or defeat in the case of the Lions, who have now lost their last two games to throw the title race wide open.

Two rounds ago, the title appeared to be a foregone conclusion as the Johannesburg-based side held a lead of more than 20 points at the summit.

The Titans’ fi rst match in the Momentum One Tournament will take place this coming Friday, 31 January, when they again face the Lions at SuperSport Park in Centurion.

The action will start at 13:30.

Titans back in the race for 4-Day series

Good news for the Titans and for South Africa is that Theunis de Bruyn has regained his batting form, as evidenced by his brilliant knock of 120 runs last week against the Lions.Photo: simondp@actionimage

The Titans placed themselves in a very favourable position last week with a huge victory over the log leaders, the Lions.
