Keeping the next course ofaction regarding Pakistanoccupied Kashmir (PoK)and Balochistan underwraps, the Ministry ofExternal Affairs (MEA) onThursday asserted thegovernment will do what ithas to do no matter what asthe people there were India’sown.Attempting to downplayrepeated posers from themedia regarding India’s nextmove in the case of PoKfollowing Prime MinisterNarendra Modi’s emphaticreference of the same in hisIndependence Day address,MEA official spokespersonVikas Swarup said the planof action cannot be shared atthis stage.
“Several people fromBalochistan and PoK,including Gilgit Baltistan, had messaged him (PrimeMinister), had been writingto him following hiscomments at the all-partymeeting in which he hadflagged the atrocities beingcommitted on the people ofBalochistan,” Swarup said.Asserting that the PrimeMinister had been thankedby these people for flaggingtheir cause at the all-partymeeting, he added that theformer was sufficientlymoved by their gratitudemassages.“As far as the next course ofaction is concerned, PrimeMinister also gave us certaininstructions in the all-partymeet. How thoseinstructions will be
implemented, I cannot atthis stage share with you. However, the MEA will dowhat it has to do becauseafter all the people of PoKare our own people,”Swarup added.Prime Minister Modi, for thefirst time, raised theBalochistan Humazn Rightsviolations and PoK issues inhis Independence Dayaddress this year.“I want to express mygratitude to the people ofBalochistan, Gilgit and PoKfor the way they whole-heartedly thanked me, theway they expressedgratitude to me…. People ofa distant land I haven’t evenseen….When they thank theIndian PM, it’s an honourfor the 125 crore people ofthe country,” he said from
the ramparts of the Red Fort. However, former externalaffairs minister SalmanKhurshid said that the PrimeMinister should not havespoken openly aboutBalochistan.Taking a dig at PrimeMinister Modi, Khurshidtold ANI that no one askedthe former to speak on theprevailing situation inBalochistan whilehighlighting the Kashmirissue in his IndependenceDay address.“My party is firm on it. movement of the people in rest of the Valley.
Normal life has been paralysed in the Valley due to street
protests since the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander
Burhan Wani in an encounter with security forces on July 8.
Heavy deployment of security forces has been carried out in
Srinagar city with all roads leading to the local office of
United Nations Military Observers Group (UNMOG) at
Sonawar sealed.
The authorities strictly imposed night curfew in the city in
view of the separatists' call for march to the UNMOGIP
office over a 72-hour period beginning yesterday. Schools,
colleges and private offices remained closed while public
transport remained off the roads due to the strike called by
the separatists.
The attendance in government offices was thin. Mobile
Internet and mobile telephony services across the valley
remained suspended. However, broadband services were
restored early this morning after five days. Broadband
services and mobile telephone services were snapped
Saturday evening. As many as 64 persons including two
police personnel have been killed and several thousand
injured in the clashes that began on July 9.
Sindhu enters badmintonfinal, now for gold
8-4. The Indian engaged her rival in long rallies and tried to
vary the pace and finish them with well-executed drops.
A cross court forehand return after a long rally which
consisted of 32 strokes helped Sindhu reach 9-6 before the
Indian reached the interval with an 11-6 advantage after
Okuhara hit long.
The Hyderabadi pushed the Japanese to the corners by
playing half smashes and drops, while Okuhara continued
to find the net while trying to play the cross court drops
from the baseline.
Leading 14-10, Sindhu hit wide and long before coming up
with a superb drop even as Okuhara forehand returns.
At 16-18, Sindhu failed to negotiate a body return but she
again caught hold of the shuttle early using her height and
sent it sailing out of the Japanese reach. A missed net shot
by Okuhara saw Sindhu reach the game point.
What ensued next was a long rally with Okuhara hitting
across as the Indian grabbed the opening game after the
Japanese found the net.
Sindhu once again opened up a 3-0 lead but the Japanese
soon clawed back and grabbed a slender 5-3 lead with the
Indian finding it difficult to keep the shuttle inside the court.
The duo moved neck-and-neck from 5-5 to 8-8. A forecourt
deception gave a point to Sindhu but she hit wide again.
Sindhu retrieved everything that was thrown at her but she
rushed on to a stroke to hit the net. At the interval, Sindhu
managed a slender 11-10 lead after her return landed at the
corner of the court.
Sindhu came out all cylinders blazing after the change of
sides and reeled off 11 straight points with the help of her
array of strokes, which included some brilliant backhand
flick and drops, to completely demolish the third seeded
Japanese.
It was a deceptive return which helped Sindhu reach a
massive 10-point match point and then eked her name into
the history books with a smash that caught Okuhara at the
forecourt.- (Agencies)

Lt Dua when asked about army being deployed to defuse
the ongoing situation and their meeting with Chief minister
Mehbooba Mufti recently, said that the meeting was a about
reviewing the situation.
"Deployment of army to restore law and order was not

The army commander, however, added that in situations
where army "needs to extricate policemen from mobs, our
men got to such places."
He said that to de-escalate the situation, security forces and
the government need to control the cycle of violence.
"I appeal youth to give peace a chance as chief minister

J&K in the army comes at a time when the state has been

The highlight of the function was the sons of the soil and

Kashmir valley is on the boil since July 9 following the

He highlighted the vital role played by their parents in
motivating their wards to join this noble profession, the

In the end, the spokesman said, proud parents and relatives
pipped the soldiers ready to join their battalions and to tread
the immortal path of glory, living up to the expectations and

Sri Amarnath Yatra concludes
some 221,000 pilgrims performed the Yatra which is the
lowest number in the last many years.
Despite the declining number of pilgrims this year, the
Amarnath Yatra went on peacefully and no untoward
incident was reported from anywhere involving the Yatris.
Roadblocks by protestors disrupted all vehicular movement
on the highways and main roads of the Kashmir Valley at
times and this sometimes involved the vehicles used by the
Yatris, but there was no targeting of the pilgrims as such
anywhere.
Modi crossed 'red line': Pak
briefing here, also took strong exception to the remarks by
Prime Minister Modi on Balochistan.
Prime Minister Modi had brought up Pakistani atrocities on
people of Balochistan and PoK in his Independence Day
speech.
"It is the violation of the UN Charter…He (Modi) crossed
the red line by talking about Balochistan," Zakaria said.
He alleged that India was involved in subversive activities
in Balochistan and Karachi. Zakaria also claimed that India
was referring to Balochistan to cover up its human rights
violations in Kashmir.
Zakaria said Prime Minister Sharif will lead the official
delegation at the General Assembly session. He said the UN
Secretary General and most of the UN members had already
been informed about the "precarious situation" in Kashmir.

Cong, NC trying to destabilizecoalition Govt: BJP
"did the Prime-Minister, Narendra Modi, not make efforts to
have negotiations with Pakistan to resolve the bilateral
issues between the two countries? Did Modi not make
attempts to address the various issues confronting the
people of Jammu and Kashmir State? Did he not make
many visits to Jammu and Kashmir, particularly the
valley?" The spokesperson added that probably Omar
Abdullah has too short memory that is why he has forgotten
the efforts of Government of India to retrieve the Valley
from the flood calamity, and assistance of 80 thousand crore
for the development activities.
He asked Omar that how many enquiries were conducted on
outbreak of violence after 1990, 2008 and 2010 when
National Conference and Congress were in power. He also
said that any political solution of Jammu and Kashmir State
can only be worked out while taking the people of all the
three regions into confidence; Pakistan and its supporters in
the Valley has no role to play.

Emphasizing for firm handling
of the problems in the troubled
Valley as also around the
LOC/borders in J&K, the former
Union Minister Prof. Chaman
Lal Gupta has expressed his
concern over the bloodshed of
youths and said that is a matter
of soul seething that the things
have might have taken ugly
shape during past some weeks.
It is perhaps that some internal
and external elements have felt
that there was weak Government
in the State, but it is a challenge
both for the State and Center
leadership to prove that their
adversaries were miscalculated.
Prof. Gupta Said that what was
happening in Kashmir valley is
not the new thing. It is a new
chapter of the old proxy war
launched by Pakistan. Lot of
bloodshed and sufferings to the
mankind has been there but for
religious bigotry and parochial
approach. Thus, a war like
situation has been created and it
should be fought like a war
instead of showing any
vacillations, He added.
Ridiculing those especially in
the Congress and National
Conference, who are ranting for
a political settlement on
Kashmir, Prof. Gupta questioned
that why they do not have such a
solution when they themselves
were at helm of affairs for so
many years. He said Pakistan
has no locus standii in J&K and
its position is that of an
aggressor. The State is an
integral part of India and it
would be defended as per the
constitution and the unanimous
resolve of Parliament. He
further said, that troubled areas
of the valley are just 1/8th of the
State and there is need to dispel
the impression that this State is
comprised of only that of the
Valley. No will of a region or
that of section can be imposed
on the entire State which is
known as J&K and had acceded
to India under the procedure.
Prof. Gupta appealed to the
mislead youth of Kashmir to
shed violence and opt for
peaceful means to get solve their
grievances as violence is no
solution to any problems.

Stuck in the wrong job? Brave enough to have changed careers, three go-getters explain how you can exchange 'earning a living' to ̀ living a life'.Strong performances certainly helped make Raju Hirani's 3 Idiots a record breaking success, but more than the calibre of its actors, what seemed to resonate more with the country's young audience was its message -one's career choice should not be dictated by parents or peers. It should, instead, reflect one's own predilections. Shalini Umachandran's new book You Can Make Your
Dreams Work profiles 15 individuals who have managed to fight against all odds and pursue a career option of their
choice years after having started out in another profession.Umachandran says the motivation was simple -people switched careers to follow their own interests or passions. "Not all of us have one overarching passion. We don't always know what we want, but you need to zero in on what you like most," says the author and journalist. Most of the profiles in Umachandran's book are of people who had spent five-six years in a certain profession before they decided to make a shift. So, one would imagine that they had a body of work to fall back on. But Umachandran informs tha t none o f t hem considered their previous profession as a backup. "When you decide to take
the plunge, you ought to have an 'all or nothing' perspective. If you have a 'plan B', you won't be as committed. They also said it is best not to give oneself a deadline like: 'I'll try it out for a year'," explains the author.Featured in Umachandran's book, here are three career mavericks who have managed to ditch their old jobs to follow their dream. They tell us how to figure out if you're in the wrong profession, find what's best for you and prepare for metamorphosis.FROM TOXICOLOGY TO SOCCER
Abhijit Barse was living the great American dream after a PhD in aquatic toxicology. He had joined a German company in the US as a toxicologist, but a year and a half later, he somehow felt empty.Barse returned to India and decided to teach at a college in Nagpur and then quit teaching to join Nagpur-based Slum Soccer in 2010, an organisation that uses football to keep kids in school and off drugs."EVALUATE YOUR PRIORITIES"Today, there are a lot of ways to find out what would be your ideal job. There are consultants who help you do that. Figure out what is it that drives you. For someone hoping to make more money, it's a no-brainer. But if there's something missing at work, you surely need to evaluate your priorities. If you're always complaining about work, you're in the wrong job." P R I O R R E S E A R C H I S ESSENTIAL"If you're just beginning your career, it's easier to make a shift. As time passes, responsibilities pile up and you can't chuck one job and pick another easily. I didn't do it overnight. I eased myself into it. A change of job can leave you with psychological problems, especially when you go from a ̀ 9 to 5' job to one where you don't have assigned timings. When I started out, there was no money, projects or structure, so I had to study about the field. This is essential before you nose-dive into a new profession. You need to know exactly what your job description would be and what the job entails.FROM WALL STREET TO SOCIAL WORKVikram Bhat, a Wall Street analyst in New York, gave up his 10-year career in finance and computer engineering in 2008. Having moved to Bangalore, Bhat decided to teach in a school for children from low-income families."AVOID UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS"
Financial security is the biggest obstacle when trying out a new profes sion. At 33, when I decided to figure out what I wanted to do, I was old enough to not have to listen to my parents. My wife is a doctor and it helped that she had a stable income and was willing to support me. The biggest challenge when you enter a new career is that you have unrealistic expectations about how satisfying it will be. We all have a certain vi sion of ourselves, but we don't build on it much. Try to figure out how practical or impractical that vision is by making it more realistic for yourself."INTERNSHIP BRIDGES A GAP"Before you take up a new job, an internship can help bridge the gap, as it did for me. From the outside, it all looks great, but it has to make sense to you on a daily basis. You have to have your basic finances sorted and have close ones on board with your decision. Find yourself a mentor and periodically remind yourself why you made the shift. You have to be patient as you will face disappointment in your new career. You need to envision the progress you see for yourself in this new chapter.FROM LAW TO LEHPiya Bose ditched the legal profession to launch Girls On The Go, an allwomen's travel company, in 2008.Initially clueless about what she wanted to do, the former corporate lawyer's only mission was, 'I would rather live than spend my life earning a living'.
" E M B R A C E T H E UNPREDICTABLE"I was working at a reputed law firm in Mumbai and I took home a fat paycheck. But the work I was doing failed to inspire me. I had no doubt that I was stuck in the wrong job.Stepping into a new profession without a guide was a trial by fire. Startup cash was a challenge. I overcame that
with a zero-cash business model. Entrepreneurship is all about unpredictability, a certain risk appetite and having faith in the invisible forces that govern the market. I once went through a prolonged rough patch when things didn't work out as planned. I encountered aggressive clients and started losing faith in myself, but I couldn't give up."IT IS AN ADVENTURE"The only way to figure out your best career choice is through a series of eliminations. Be clear about the reasons you are opting for a career change. Is it only because you will earn more or is it because you want a new lease of life? Treat it as an adventure and you will stay inspired when the going gets tough. If you are able to hold on even when you're at the bottom, the rewards will be very satisfying.

Finding and retaining talent for start-ups can be challenging since most professionals look to work with established companies. Here are a few measures any new enterprise can adopt to hire and hold on to the best talent. The dream of creating a successful start-up on a perceived path to financial freedom has crossed the minds of millions of Indians, and yet the problem of building good human resources continues to plague the way we do business. Most start-up founders find themselves wrought with challenges that transcend innovation and large pools of potential customers the inability to find good people to build their team. The hiring process can be intensely challenging, if not tedious. Most well educated Indian youngsters want to associate themselves with the `big brands' of the world. Even young professionals that have prolific positions in start-up companies move out quickly to pursue the promise of fame and fortune within the corporate world. It is almost impossible for start-up founders to hold onto thei r oncediscovered proteges. How can such small new businesses compete with the corporate world in finding and retaining talent?PERSONAL CONNECTDespite living in a competitive digital world, personal contact still matters and entrepreneurs m u s t r e m e m b e r t h a t . Employees must be able to connect with their employers on a face-to-face basis. A personal connection is about brainstorming, lengthy discussions, team outings, trainings, engagements and freedom of opinion. No one wants to feel stifled especially not the new generat ion. A p e r s o n a l i s e d c o l l a b o r a t i v e env i ronmen t empower s t he framework of innovation to ensure that employees know they matter.A focused and productive workforce is the foundation behind the success of any enterprise. Perhaps it sounds old-fashioned when you consider the bevy of technological devices available today, but the fact remains that computers can't replace human interaction.Interconnected personal relationships at work are necessary for the entrepreneur to put his best foot forward - especially if he wants his start-up to stand out from
among the millions of other existing start-ups. Investing in human resources makes employees feel valued in a company - whether it is advancement trainings, employee engagements or even something as simple as brainstorming sessions.Even the small things matter - an employer simply congratulating an employee on a job well done or paying for an education course. These efforts generate loyal employees, which in turn fortify the culture of the company in dealing with its people.TIMELY TRAININGEnabling enhanced employee engagement t h r o u g h l e a d e r s h i p t r a i n i n g s a n d t eambui ld ing p rogrammes become mandatory. This should be on the list of priorities for any entrepreneur. The current framework of start-ups in India is far too competitive for entrepreneurs to take lightly - especially when it comes to managing their human resources. Training employees and equipping them with the right skills is an excellent way to establish the desired working culture from the beginning - especially when it involves integration into organisational values.
A paycheck isn't culture - human relationships are.Building a cohesive environment that echoes certain values delivers an assurance that the start-up isn't like any other. A business should focus on attracting educated youngsters with high potential in their field and should invest in training them to become performers with a reward structure that retains good talent within the organisation.KEEPING THE BIGGER PICTURE IN MINDWhile entrepreneurs focus on retaining internal talent, they must not lose sight of the bigger picture. The interrelation between
satisfied customers and employees is far closer than anyone can imagine - forming an undeniable cyclic pattern. Satisfied employees are more productive and work towards enhanced customer satisfaction. Satisfied customers leave encouraging client testimonials for businesses, which in turn attracts new customers and new talent - creating an exciting opportunity for entrepreneurs to employ high-quality employees with deep-rooted loyalty to the company.Start-ups must consider the advantage of developing their talent through a multitude of channels - without fear and inhibitions. The investment in human talent is merely a temporary dent on profits, especially when it translates into enormous success at the forefront of new innovations and service quality - boosted by the commitment of entrenched and committed human capital throughout the life of the start-up.
Do you feel awkward reporting to a younger boss? A new generation is trying to allay your fears by asking, "What's age got to do with it?"Innovation apart, fast proliferating startups have another side effect -younger bosses. This shift in status quo does give rise to a certain anxiety. In a traditionally hierarchy-friendly country, does this tipping of balance change things at the workplace? According to the recent 2 0 1 5 T i m e s J o b s Leadership Survey, over 60 per cent entry-to-mid level employees say they would like to have young bosses. This, however, is in contrast to 80 per cent senior professionals, who a f t e r 2 0 y e a r s o f experience, would prefer o l d e r b o s s e s . T h e question of age seems to have left India Inc in a bind, but it is strangely the young entrepreneurs and business managers who themselves are offering a solution.THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHTFor startups and companies that are concerned with newer technologies, the media and the internet, young bosses often prove to be a huge advantage. At 23, Rega Jha is Editor, Buzzfeed India, and she leads a team of people where almost everyone is older
than her. "For an internet company," she says, "there is a premium on being young. We
have an inherent advantage because we grew up with
this technology. O l d e r
p e op le i n
their 3 0 s
and 40s will walk

and ask, `Hey,

what do you kids think of this?' So age does not come with any negative connotations at work."While youngsters may be better equipped to tackle new age jobs, young bosses are not complacent enough to be oblivious to the lack of experience that comes with their age. In fact,
because they are so keenly aware of this fact, they constantly try to learn from older colleagues. In her tenure with Buzzfeed, Rega has been conscious of her age and thus respectful of employees with more experience, even going out of her way to ask them for tips and advice. Their own failures and successes have helped provide her a priceless map.TWO-WAY STREET OF EDUCATIONSaurabh Agarwal was already an entrepreneur when it hadn't even become cool to become one. He started Unify Facility Management in 2009 and was only 26 at the time. Today, Unify is one of the biggest housekeeping service providers for corporate and commercial facilities in the country. In a business that had little to do with new technologies, Saurabh was surrounded by older experts. "Even when I started taking interviews, I made sure I didn't sound bossy. These people were more experienced than me. They had worked in the industry for 20 years and seen and done things I hadn't. I told them I needed them for this venture to succeed. They had the expertise I didn't and I did not even try to hide this fact."The respondents to this article made it clear that most employees in the country value skills far more than age. Rahul Sharma, for instance, joined the Teach For India Fellowship in 2013 to teach students of low-income schools.Because the average age of people working in the NGO fell within the mid-20s spectrum, only a handful of people were older than Rahul. At 40, Rahul was 10-15 years older than the Program Managers he reported to during the two years he spent there. "Even though I was older than my Program Managers, they had more experience than me in the education field," says Rahul, who had left his cushy corporate job to engineer soci etal change. "It made no differ ence to me that they were younger than me. In my mind, there is no bias for either younger or older bosses. I learned from them, like I would from any boss. Conversely, they took my opinion on things just like they took opinions from other colleagues who were their age."

Our marvelous traditiongoes back to a 2,500-year-old text of phys
There is the claim thatmodern India has notmade scientific
contributions commensuratewith its population andresources, because Indiansremain unconnected withtheir own scientifictradition. There were scientific giantsin India beforeIndependence and the namesof Jagadish Chandra Bose,
Satyendra Nath Bose,Meghnad Saha, CV Raman,Srinivasa Ramanujan andYellapragada Subbarowcome to mind. They made theircontributions when therewere few opportunities forresearch in Indian collegesand universities.Compared to that difficultperiod, Indian universitieshave been well supportedafter Independence. A fewscientists have achievedgreatness but most of themdid so after leaving India. In any event, thecontributions of Indianscience since Independenceare nowhere commensuratewith the investment inhigher education and theexpansion of the university
system in India. Not one Indian universityfigures in the top 200 list ofthe world, and we appear tobe slipping compared toother nations.Universities in Australia,Singapore, Korea and HongKong have leapfrogged overIndian universities in worldrankings. How are Indian universitiesdoing within the lesscompetitive BRICScountries? In the latest QSBRICS Rankings, China has45 of the top 100 places, where India has only 13.China's top five universitiesare in ranks 1 through 5whereas India's topuniversity, the IndianInstitute of Science, is at the6th place.
Given this sorry situation, itis confusing to be told thatIndian ideas have played acrucial role in thedevelopment of modernscience. We are not just talking aboutthe symbol zero, algebra andastronomy, but alsoinoculation in medicine, theperiodic table of chemicalelements, the field oflinguistics, and the birth ofquantum mechanics (if theclaim of its creator ErwinSchrödinger is to be believed),to mention just a few. Wewould rather believe that theseare tall tales. In the West, almost allscientists are interested in thephilosophical tradition ofscience going back to theGreeks.
They also write on theirexperience for the generalpublic and doing so bring theexcitement of science to awider audience. Some Indian scientists haveindeed written for the generalpublic. But I know of no oneexcepting JC Bose and CVRaman who tried to presentthe philosophical bases of theirresearch. Many Indians (includingscientists) consider science asthe job they must do for theircompany or university, but yetbelieve in magical thinkingwhen it comes to theconsideration of largerscientific issues.Others, when they have retiredfrom their careers, go straightfrom physics to metaphysicsand expound on the unreality
of this world! But it is true that India has amarvellous tradition of sciencethat goes back to Kanada'sVaisesika, which is a 2,500-year-old text of physics. Thistext was known to pre-Independence Indian scientistsbut has been overlooked since.I recently did a translation ofthis text under the title Matterand Mind, which for the firsttime takes a look at it from theperspective of physics and notjust that of philosophy.Kanada starts with sixcategories (padarthas) that arenameable and knowable, proposing they are sufficient todescribe everything in theuniverse from concrete matterto the abstract atom. Whatcould be more rational andlogical than that?
He speaks of four kinds ofatoms of which two have mass(one heavier than the other)and two that do not.Just imagining this should beworthy of celebration even if itis only a coincidence thatmodern physics also has fourstable atoms, namely proton, electron, neutrino, and photon. The Greek philosophers arepraised for much less.Kanada does somethingadditional that no one hasattempted: he describes asystem that has place not onlyfor inert matter but also minds
and consciousness. He also sees chemistry andbiology as arising out of thevarious combinations of atoms.Texts like this should be asource of inspiration and theybelong to India's sastric(scientific) tradition wherethe idea was to use logic andrelentless questioning toarrive at insights aboutreality. It is good to know that therishis of yore were not onlyinterested in matters of thespirit but also of this livedlife.

By invokingBalochistan, POJKand Gilgit-Baltistan
from the ramparts of historicRed Fort during his
Independence Day speech, PM Modi hassignalled a titanic shift in India’s foreignpolicy. What is common between Balochistan,POJK and Gilgit-Baltistan? All three regionsare victim of gross human right violationsand economic deprivation through brutal useof military power by Pakistan.India is now asserting its role not only as aregional power but also as an emerging worldpower. It is a strategic move against Pakistanwhich has not only launched a proxy waragainst India backed by jihadi terror but alsohas been blatantly interfering in our domesticaffairs ignoring the spirit of ShimlaAgreement. What is common between Balochistan,POJK and Gilgit-Baltistan? All three regionsare victim of gross human right violationsand economic deprivation through brutal useof military power by Pakistan. Kalat (whichincludes most of modern Balochistan) andJ&K were both princely states that decidednot to join either India or Pakistan when theBritish announced partition of India underthe Independence of India Act 1947. Both theprincely states signed a Standstill Agreementwith Dominion of Pakistan and were victimof Pakistan’s treachery.Pakistan invaded J&K in October 1947 as aconsequence of which the Maharaja accededto India on 27 October 1947 paving way forarrival of Indian forces in the state to contestthe Pakistani invasion. The Indian forcesfought valiantly and forced the invaders tovacate the captured territories when a UNsponsored cease fire was enforced on 1January 1949. Pakistan remained in controlof a portion of J&K which is referred to asPak Occupied Jammu Kashmir (POJK).Gilgit-Baltistan, an integral part of theprincely state of J&K ruled by Maharaja HariSingh which acceded to India, wassurreptitiously separated by Pakistan fromPOJK and a portion of it illegally acceded toChina later. It was earlier known as NorthernAreas and renamed later as Gilgit-Baltistanand is under direct federal control ofPakistan. The area being predominantly Shiapopulated has also been a victim of religious
persecution by Sunni-Pakistan and hasundergone forced demographic changes.Balochistan was militarily annexed byPakistan in April 1948.…majority Indians are ignorant aboutBalochistan, genesis of its freedommovement and its strategic importance. While POJK including Gilgit-Baltistan is ourintegral part, India is well within its rights todemand its vacation from illegal occupationof Pakistan and support the ongoing freedommovement there. But many Indians areasking why should India supportBalochistan? The reason is simple becausemajority Indians are ignorant aboutBalochistan, genesis of its freedommovement and its strategic importance.Balochistan is south-west region of Pakistanwith a coastline of 771 kilometers (out oftotal coastline of 1100 km of Pakistan) to thesouth and shares land borders with Iran in thesouth-west , Afghanistan in north and north-west, Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwaand the Federally Administered Tribal Areas(FATA) to the north-east. It covers 44% ofPakistani land mass but has only 4% of itstotal population. The area is immensely richin natural resources and minerals like copperand gold. It caters for the entire country’srequirement of natural gas. However, it is thepoorest region of Pakistan lacking in basicfacilities like electricity and drinking water. Before partition Balochistan consisted offour princely states of Kalat, Lasbela, Kharanand Makran. While Kharan and Lasbela werefiduciary states placed under the suzeraintyof Khan of Kalat by the British Makran wasnominated as a district of Kalat. On 11August 1947, Kalat was declared anindependent sovereign state with theconcurrence of Viceroy as Crown’sRepresentative, Jinnah representing Pakistanand Khan of Kalat. As mentioned earlier astandstill agreement was signed betweenPakistan and Kalat which was breached byPakistan through military annexation on 1April 1948. Since then it has witnessed acontinuous freedom struggle by the valiantBalochis who refuse to accept the forcibleaccession by Pakistan. They to this daycelebrate 11 August as Independence Day ofBalochistan. The Baloch were and remain tilldate a fiercely independent people fightingthe Pakistani occupation. The Baloch freedom movement so far hasremained unexposed to the world because ofthe lack of media presence in the area, India’s
passivity and Pakistan’s ‘Iron-Fist’ policy tosupress the movement.Pakistan on its part has committed the worstpossible atrocities on the Balochis as part ofa horrific campaign to put down dissent andgag the voice for freedom. Incidentally,Pakistan army has a Baloch Regiment withless than 10% ethnic Balochis joining itsranks. In India, we are not at all aware aboutthe magnitude of brutality and atrocitiesbeing committed on the Balochis byPakistan Army, Frontier Corps troops, ISIincluding use of air power to bombard anddestroy settlements and kill innocentcivilians. The parallel to some extent can bedrawn with the mass murders and massacrecommitted in erstwhile East Pakistan in1971 that led to emergence of independentBangladesh. Incidentally, Gen Tikka Khanknown as ‘Butcher of Bangladesh’ has thedubious distinction of being called ‘Butcherof Balochistan’ as well because of the bloodycampaign he led there from 1973-77.Recently, there have been reports ofgenocide by Pakistan Army to facilitate theChina-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC)project to which the Baloch are opposed andterm it as ‘economic rape’ of the region bythe Chinese. To counter the Balochnationalism, Pakistan has also injected‘Islamic Extremism’ in the region thusadding another dimension against therelentless freedom movement. After the killing of Baloch leader AkbarKhan Bugti in an aerial attack in 2006, themovement has gained renewed momentumleading to even more brutal response by theArmy. ‘Enforced disappearances’ or ‘Killand Dump’ policy is the worst form ofatrocity being committed on the Baloch.Discovery of mass graves and bullet riddenbodies dumped on the road side has becomea common feature. About 2 lakh Baloch havebeen killed from 2000-2016 and more than25000 have disappeared. Through use ofterror, Pakistan has also resorted to ethniccleansing. Most of the Baloch nationalistleaders have either been killed ordisappeared. Most of them are nowcontrolling the movement from exile. TheBaloch are also suffering ‘economicexclusion’ and forced resettlement in order tofacilitate the CPEC project which ironicallydenies jobs to local Baloch.Abhinav Pandya, an international researchscholar, terms Balochistan as “Pakistan’s softunderbelly,” where Pakistan’s nukes are
hidden. The Baloch freedom movement so far hasremained unexposed to the world because ofthe lack of media presence in the area, India’spassivity and Pakistan’s ‘Iron-Fist’ policy tosupress the movement. Emboldened Pakistanhas accelerated the inhuman use of brutalforce compelling India to plead for the justcause of Baloch as it has done in the past forPalestine and Bangladesh.Mehran Marri, Baloch representative atEuropean Union, has said, “As Indiaintervened in Bangladesh to stop thegenocide on the people of Bangladesh, weare hopeful the same will happen with usbecause we are suffering genocide at thehands of Pakistan military and Pakistan.” Thequestion is to what extent government ofIndia is willing to involve itself in the Balochfreedom movement?Balochistan is important for India due to itsstrategic location, strategic minerals andenergy resources. Abhinav Pandya, aninternational research scholar, termsBalochistan as “Pakistan’s soft underbelly,”where Pakistan’s nukes are hidden. As animportant regional power, its India’sobligation to internationally expose Pakistanfor its grim Human Rights record in theregion.India also has to carefully examine theimplications of a ‘disintegrated Pakistan’versus a ‘unified Pakistan’ for peace andstability in South Asia because if Balochistansecedes Sindh will follow soon followed bythe Pushtoons. The likelihood of its nucleararsenal being misused is another issue thatwould bother Indian planners. To my mind, India’s involvement inBalochistan should be graduated. To beginwith, Indian media has to play a major role inexposing Pakistan’s atrocities on the haplessBalochis through a sustained mediacampaign to build a favourable internationalopinion against Pakistan and isolate Pakistannot only as an epicentre of jihadi terror butalso as a perpetrator of inhuman atrocities onits people and gross violator of human rights.India must forcefully raise the issue inforthcoming UN General Assembly meet todraw international attention to the genocidein Balochistan and the ongoing freedommovement therein. Last but not the leastIndia must provide unequivocal moral andpolitical support to the Baloch freedommovement while seeking a peacefulresolution of the problem.

Redefine sedition
With Amnesty International facing Sedition trialfor the happening in Bangalore, the chances ofthe organization passing the judicial scrutiny
are very less. Besides, it becomes imperative for seditionto be defined. Many sedition complaints have been lodged by Policeagainst political activists and others supporting theirviews, although controversial and offensive. There is a need to clarify on what falls in the ambit ofsedition and the question whether anti-India slogansconstitute sedition needs to be answered. In case lodgedagainst the well-known human rights group, members ofthe ABVP claimed in an FIR that Kashmiri Studentsraised anti India slogans.Indeed, the same slogans which were heard a few monthsearlier at the campus of the Jawaharlal Nehru Universityand which had led to the charges of sedition beingslapped against its student leader Kannahiya Kumar werealso heard at the Bengaluru meeting. The slogans calledfor the break-up of India and the secession of Kashmir infavour of Pakistan. However, the official statement issued by the organisersof the event said that nobody from Amnesty raised anyslogan. The meeting was supposedly called to discuss theplight of ‘broken families’ from Kashmir. It was claimedthat the focus was on human rights violations and thedenial of justice to families claiming to be victims of theexcesses of the security forces. A 2015 report producedby Amnesty purportedly documented all such excessesand violations of human rights. When the security forces came in for severecondemnation from various speakers, a Kashmiri Pandit, whose family was forced to leave the Valley, rose todefend the armed forces. This led to heated exchangeswhich soon degenerated into raucous slogan-shouting,with the ABVP activists raising ~Bharat Mata Ki Jai~ anda group of Kashmiri students countering with ~Lad KeyLenge Azaadi~, and more slogans in that vein. As apanelist in a television discussion argued, even if nonefrom Amnesty was a slogan-shouter, the fact that it hadorganised the meeting made it accountable for the anti-India sloganeering. The platform was lent by Amnesty tothe anti-India elements. There being absence of a lesser charge for an offence, thepolice are automatically forced to slap the seditioncharges as marked in the Indian Penal Code. The sedition law provides for imprisonment up to life foranyone who through ‘words, either spoken or written, orby signs, or by visible representation, or otherwise bringsor attempts to bring into hatred or contempt, or excites orattempts to excite disaffection against the governmentestablished by law …’ The omnibus ambit of the law canvirtually drag in every vitriolic critic of the governmentof the day. That the law needs to be changed is obvious, especially when secessionist activity aims at the IndianState rather than any particular government.Given the somewhat suspect record of the human rightswatch group, both in regard to its funding and its highlyselective approach to its avowed mission, there can be nogainsaying that on Kashmir it tends to tilt clearly infavour of the seditionists rather than it taking a morebalanced approach in the matter. Maybe its stance comesfrom the felt need to dovetail its activities with the overallforeign policy goals of major western powers. The Amnesty has shown little or no understanding of thehostile conditions in which the security forces operate inKashmir, what with a handful of local insurgents creatingmayhem in collusion with Pakistani terrorists and theirpaid surrogates going under the misleading nomenclatureof Hurriyat. This cabal manages to get a lot of play in thenational and international media thanks partly to theefforts of organisations like Amnesty International.Indeed, it will be instructive if Amnesty provided a proofby documenting human rights violations, say, in SaudiArabia, Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, etc.Indeed, successive Indian governments have given a longrope to the anti-India elements in Kashmir which is insharp contrast to the treatment a country like the USmeted out to the terror suspects following the 9/11atrocity. Yet, Amnesty has had little to say in that regard.Meanwhile, the NDA Government must undertake areview of the sedition law in order to ensure that it is intune with a democratic India. Nehru had once railedagainst the colonial era law but neither he nor hisdaughter Indira Gandhi did anything to replace it.

Adocumentary charts thefascinating last days ofSubhas Bose.
Seventy-one years ago on thisday, August 18, 1945, anImperial Japanese Armybomber crashed and explodedinto flames soon after take offfrom Taihoku airfield inJapanese-occupied Formosa. The loss of the twin-enginedMitsubishi Ki-21 "Sally" wentunnoticed because it wasovershadowed by amomentous event three daysbefore. On August 15, 1945, theEmpire of Japan, attacked bytwin nuclear bombs, hadannounced its surrenderending the Second World War.Yet, 71 years later, this crashcontinues to resonate as India'smost controversial accidentbecause of its illustriouspassenger on board, Indianrevolutionary Subhas ChandraBoseThe accident predated IndianIndependence by two fullyears and, as some would
argue, forever altering thecountry's destiny. The official version comesfrom Bose's aide CaptainHabibur Rahman and fiveJapanese army officials whosurvived the crash. Bose, theysay, survived the crash butsustained grievous third-degree burn injuries. His cotton military uniform, splashed with aviation fuel, had ignited, turning him into ahuman torch. Bose died inhospital later that evening, hisbody was cremated two dayslater and the ashes flown toTokyo where they remain inthe Renkoji Temple. This version has beenquestioned by the Bose familyand several researchers andpolitical parties. This is why the circumstancesof Bose's disappearance havebeen the subject of at least fiveinquiries - three of themappointed by the governmentof India between 1956 and1996.It is India's longest runningmystery, one which SubhasChandra Bose The Mystery, a46-minute documentary byIqbal Malhotra, says "hasfascinated generations ofIndians".The Mystery recently telecaston Discovery Channel
recreates Bose's last journeyacross South East Asia andquestions his disappearance inthe air crash.Debunking the air crash wouldbe vital for anyone trying toestablish that Bose escapedand survived. The JusticeMukherjee commission ofinquiry said in 2006 that no aircrash took place. Its findingshave not been accepted by thegovernment. But where did Bose go if hesurvived the crash? Trying toplot his purported movementsafter the crash is an attemptthat assumes the spirit andintensity of Ufology. The pseudoscience studiedunidentified flying objectsduring the paranoid Cold Waryears. Ufologists believedgovernments were hidingevidence, including crashedUFOs in the secluded "Area51" US Air Force facility in theNevada desert.Area 51 for decades was theUfologists' Holy Grail, evidence of a deep governmentconspiracy. (The US AirForce's refusal to confirm ordeny secret activities onlyadded to its mystery).Bose researchers say hecompleted his journey into theSoviet Union, others like AnujDhar believe he crossed back
into India, living incognito, asan unnamed Indian monk'Gumnami baba' in Faizabad,Uttar Pradesh, until his deathin 1985.The Mystery seizes theRussian angle. The filmmakerfinds its Area 51 in the Sovietarchives, in Russian militaryarchives hidden behind theIron Curtain. The film follows SiddharthaSatbhai, a London-basedethical hacker, who seizespictures of a man superficiallyresembling Bose, on thesidelights of the Lal BahadurShastri-Ayub Khan summit atTashkent declaration in 1966.Satbhai's rather increduloustheory, based on facialmapping analysis, suggeststhat 'The Tashkent man' wasBose himself.Purabi Roy, author and visitingprofessor at the Moscow StateUniversity, and a retired MajorGeneral AleksandrKolesnikov, weigh in tosupport Bose's presence in theSoviet Union - Roy, given arare glimpse of Russianarchives in the 1990s, andGeneral Kolesnikov who tellsof secret papers stored at theformer KGB (now FSB)headquarters in Podolsk.Top Soviet officials discusswhat to do with Netaji Bose in
1946, a year after the crash,General Kolesnikov affirms. It is their word against that ofAshish Ray, a London-basedjournalist and grand-nephewof Bose. Ray, one of theforemost debunkers of Bosedisappearance theories, meticulously lays out theofficial line. The air crash did indeed takeplace: there were at least fivesurvivors and several peoplearound Bose's bedside as hebreathed his last on the night ofAugust 18 and his ashes wereflown to Tokyo. The documentary uses thetestimony of a descendant of aformer Bose associate inSaigon and not in Taipei onAugust 18, 1945.The entire air crash, the Boseconspiracy theorists say, wasfabricated by the leader and hisJapanese hosts. A subterfugethat would help him stage hisfinal escape from the BritishEmpire.Such suspicion is not alwaysunfounded. Who would, forinstance, have believed thegovernment of free Indiawould have snooped on Bose'sfamily for three decades?(Exposed by Anuj Dhar in2015 and reported by IndiaToday magazine).Nor are such spectacular
escapades alien to Bose'scharacter. If someone told anIndian in British colonial India- cut off from the rest of theworld thanks to the wartimeemergency - of an Indianrevolutionary who travelledacross Stalin's Russia, shookhands with Hitler and voyagedunder the oceans to raise arevolutionary army - he wouldhave been dismissed outrightas a fool.Bose did all of this and more, boldly going where no Indianhad gone before, evenmanaging the spectacular featof getting the Soviet Union torecognise his provisionalgovernment of Azad Hind in1943. This, despite Stalinbeing an ally of Great Britain.General Kolesnikovpersonally believes in a secretpact between the USSR andGreat Britain over the fate ofBose. There are questions but noclear answers. The superblycrafted documentary, however, leaves us none the wiser. Butperhaps that is the point.General Kolesnikov suggeststhe only way India can getanswers - an official requestfrom the Prime Minister toPresident Vladimir Putin. The end of a quest, or thebeginning of a new one.
The mystery continues: Did Netaji end up in Soviet Russia?

When two bacteria interact, they inhibit the virulence of

A leading w e l l n e s s centre in the city organised an open house to make sense of what has become an urban epidemic and suggested ways to overcome it.Last Thursday, three experts at The Health Awareness Centre in Worli, Navina Venkat, Shilpa Chawla and Anju Venkat organised a rather pertinent seminar. They addressed the subject of stress -its cause and effect, and offered possible solutions. The talk was attended by a myriad set of people. They learnt what happens to the body when we are 'stressed'. While some of us are motivated by it, some experience butterflies in the stomach. Some lose sleep, get anxious, jittery, experience a sensation in the gut, feel insecure, get cranky or get so demotivated that they almost give up. "However," Navina said, "to all these responses, there is one thing common. We have all been given a capacity to take action when required and that is known as the stress response. It's called eustress, distress or stress."UNDERSTANDING STRESS
They defined the word 'Stress' a s ' S t i m u l u s T r i g g e r e d Response, which is Excitatory, Sys temic and Short Lived'. The rest of the open h o u s e w a s precisely about understanding this acronym."Activity and rest," Navina explained, "is a fundamental device that has been carried along for millions of years, and stays, and plays out in our system through two basic networks - o u r b i o l o g i c a l pathways and our nervous systems."In t he b io log i ca l pathways, this response is expressed through catabolic action (when we use energy and when are tissues break down) and anabolic action (when our energy is stored, tissues are built and repaired). "For the anabolic and catabolic
act ion to take place, the stimulus of a nervous system is required. This i s h a n d l e d b y t h e autonomic nervous system. This autonomic nervous system is nothing but involuntary actions that is triggered again by the sympathetic and the parasympathetic nervous system," Navina said. "The point where the sympathetic nervous system gets aroused the most is in typical situations where it has to choose between pleasure or pain, a threat or an opportunity, preventing or promoting, what is called fleeing or fighting. Any perceived or real threat will always trigger the same sympathetic nervous system and the same catabolic response that is the fight-or-flight response. If this system wasn't there, we wouldn't be able to survive."
It is learnt that the body moves between three THREE STATES OF THE BODY
states: rest-activity-rest. Though being in the 'resting state' is what our body is constantly striving to do. "Every cell, tissue, organ, at any given point is working hard to create a stable environment inside, so that cells can function to their optimum. This is called homeostatis (stability or balance) in the body," said Navina. "But in reality, at every given point, the body has to respond to physiological symptoms at the micro-cellular level. It has to keep adjusting our behaviour at the macro level. And along with making the physiological and behavioural adjustments at the micro and macro level, it has to keep a balance with the dance that is happening in our environment."In the activity state, the body is thrown out of balance because of an external stimuli -physical, physiological, environmental, social and economic in nature. For instance, bad traffic, lack of sleep, loss of a loved one, pressure at work, junk food, and disagreements. "And we think we have no control in what way our body is responding to these external stimulus. But the point is, the physiological response is always the same. Both at the micro and macro level, our body is producing the same fight-or-flight chemicals, hormones and behaviour each time we feel stressed or our stressor is out there," Navina pointed out.
Stress is nothing but our body's response to the brain perceiving a threat. So, it is useful. "The reason it has become such a killer disease today is because most of us lay suspended in the second stage," she asserted. "And the stress doesn't finish inside there. It has to move to the third stage which is resting stage." So between a situation that is causing anxiety and your system dealing with it, your body comes back to a period of rest, which is a period of balance.
In order to understand how stress affects us, we have to understand what happens within our body when we feel an emotion. "So when we experience an emotion whether it is sight, sound, smell, taste or touch, it produces a chemical inside which moves all over the body, goes cell to cell and says, 'listen, this is what is happening and this is what we need to respond to'," shared Shilpa. Each time we experience as emotion, we have a chemical that is released in the body. When we are in love, we release oxytocin, when we are happy, we release endorphins. So, what happens to the body when we are stressed?
- Our body recognises a stressor- A rapid relay of messages across the nervous system, alerts the body of the

HOW DOES THE BODY RESPOND?
INTERNALLY

How to overcome
stressor- The first message goes to the adrenal (the little cap like organs sitting on top of the kidneys). The adrenal releases adrenaline and cortisol. These are chemicals that diffuse into our blood, gearing the rest of the body in a stress response- Adrenaline and cortisol tag the lung, heart and liver, which means oxygen, triglycerides and glucose get pumped into the blood- Muscles contract to action- The second message moves to the gut. It alerts the microflora of possible danger. The gut microbes move into the blood to support the immune system, slowing down the process of digestion.
Our muscles tense and contract, pupils dilate, heart beats faster, blood pressure rises, sweat glands get activated all over the body, mouth runs dry, breathing becomes rapid and shallow, brain gets hyper alert, senses get sharpened, cholesterol and blood sugar appear elevated.
According to Anju, the second stage is nothing but appraisal -How will I response to a situation or event? "Every response creates a feeling, which is different, and therefore, the chemical or hormone created in them is different. The situation is the same. The action is the same. What changes it is perception. And one needs to understand this perception because that is our appraisal," she said. She gave the example of a chair, which is stationary in a room, but if seen from out of space it is moving 1000 miles per hour. "The perception," she insisted, "is not a chemical, neither it is automatic. It is taught and learnt."For instance, a snake to a layperson might create fear, but to a snake charmer, it is something that it works with every day. "The moment I experience fear, which is an intangible feeling, I am immediate ly creat ing something extremely real that is a real molecule called adrenaline because where thought goes , hormone goes. Your mind and body are one," said Anju. Your feeling changes according to what you have learnt and experienced and how many times you have experienced it. This is termed as the appraisal of a situation. If stress is there, action of the body is there. What is in-between is how your body is perceiving it.WHAT CREATES STRESS?
For instance, bad traffic, a sudden tough conversation with your spouse or the maid not showing up are unpredictable situations. This unpredictable process will make your body move into excitation because your

response is being triggered by that appraisal of the experience.
Lack of control in a process means your body is in continuous excitation.
The lack of feeling that when I am in a stressful situation, I have something to release it causes stress.
Anju laid great emphasis on the food we consume. When we eat foods that are cheesy, for instance, we are blocking our gut. "So in that case, you are not allowing serotonin (happy hormone) to be activated. Therefore, the serotonin cannot go to the cell and say do not degenerate me," she explained. "If it is a blocker, your body has already produced C Reactive protein to make your blood thicker to cope with that onslaught. Instead, what you are putting is more thickening agents. Are you then not going to move into an embolism or blood clot? Of course, you will.”The moment you intake aerated drinks and caffeine, you are stimulating the adrenaline further. And what needs to be short lived becomes long-term. "So it will take that body much longer to move back to an inhibitory state/resting state," she said.
- Know your signals/triggers whether it is palpitation, sweaty palms, or the need to pick up coffee- Use your triggers (mental, emotional, physical, financial) because what you have at that time is more energy, more muscle power, oxygen and functioning capabilities. If used, from distress it will become eustress. This changes your memory, your perception on what you see as stress.
- All your senses are taking in and leaving an imprint on your cells. As human beings, we hold on to our imprints and emotions. Your body c o m m u n i c a t e s s t r e s s through your individual mechanism (hair fall, eyes dilating, sleeplessness, irritability), understand it.
This helps you predict and the moment you're able to predict, you can change the trigger. - When you are stressed, take control through rhythm and routine. For that, you need to be in a resting phase. This will help you boost your DHEA - the hormone that allows you to fight this process in the most conscious way.-Sleep for eight hours in darkness.- Intake of natural foods must be high. During a stressful period, do not turn to stimulant food (chocolate, cheese, Chinese fare), aerated drinks, alcohol, nicotine, and spend time on screen. That release is violence.

Our body clock accelerates the ability of viruses to replicate and spread between cells ten times faster during the morning than by the end of the day, placing people at a higher risk of catching infection, a study involving an Indian-origin scientist has revealed.Disruptions in body clock lead to increased virus replication and dissemination, indicating that severity of acute infections is influenced by circadian time-keeping."The time of day of infection can have a major influence on how susceptible we are to the disease, or at least on the viral replication, meaning that infection at the wrong time of day could cause a much more severe acute infection," said Akhilesh Reddy, Professor at University of Cambridge. For the study, the team compared normal 'wild type' mice infected with herpes virus and influenza A virus at different times of the day, measuring levels of virus infection and spread. The mice lived in a controlled environment where 12 hours were in the daylight and the other 12 hours were dark. The results showed that virus replication in those mice infected at the very start of the day, when these nocturnal animals start their resting
phase, the risk of infection was shown to be ten times greater than those infected by the end of the day while they were transitioning to their active phase.Abolishing cellular circadian rhythms increased both herpes and influenza A virus infection in the mice, the researchers said."Our results suggest that the clock in every cell determines how successfully a virus replicates. When we disrupted the body clock in either cells or mice, we found that the timing of infection no longer mattered -- viral replication was always
high," added Rachel Edgar from University of Cambridge."This indicates that shift workers, who work for some nights and rest for other nights and have a disrupted body clock, will be more susceptible to viral diseases. If so, then they could be prime candidates for receiving the annual flu vaccines," Rachel noted. In addition, Bmal1 -- a gene that controls the circadian rhythm -- also undergoes seasonal variations. It remains less active during winter,
while it increases activity in summer, thus explaining the reason why diseases, such as influenza, are more likely to spread throughout populations during winter, said the paper published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

Central Govt failed to understandground reality of Kashmir: Vakil
Srinagar, Aug 18Reacting on the meeting of the opposition yesterday inJ&K State under the chairmanship of Omar AbdullahFormer Minister Abdul Gani Vakil today in a statementdescribed it as failure and said nothing concrete hascome out of the meeting that would have send a strongmessage to Central Government and forced the Centreto come on the table for a meaningful dialogue with allstake holders including Hurriyat Conference in order tocreate peaceful atmosphere in the valley. medal by downing
Germany in a dramatic
shoot-out on Wednesday.
With the score tied at 1-

the shoot-out 4-3 and
will face Britain for the
gold medal.
The British reached the
Olympic final for the first time with a 3-0 win over New

goal for the Dutch in their shoot-out triumph. "At first I
had some doubts because I missed the first shot, but I trust
in my own shoot-outs so I thought, 'Well, I'm not going to
miss it twice'," said Hoog who missed her first attempt.
"So I trust and I felt that the team trusted me as well, but
after I scored it, I don't know what was going on. The
most feeling I think is relief. Just relief that we won
today."Lisa Altenburg, who was responsible for missing one of
Germany's four shoot-out attempts, said: "My penalty shot

India batsman Rohit Sharma says
he will never shy away from
playing his natural game
irrespective of the format he is
playing.
After falling cheaply in the first
innings, Rohit made his second
opportunity count in the third and
final Test against the West Indies.
He smashed three sixes towards the
end of day four, pushing the run-
rate up before getting an
unfortunate decision on the fifth
day morning that forced him to
return on 41 from 59 balls.
“My natural game is to attack and
put the pressure back on the
bowlers whether I am facing the
first ball or the last. I know
situations are going to be different,
but one thing is for sure that I am
not going to change my natural
game. I am what I am. I understand
Test cricket cannot be played like
One-Day cricket, but there are
examples around the world of
cricketers playing in a similar
way,” Rohit told ‘bcci.tv’.
He added,”I should do what is best
for me and I know what is best for
me. Nobody in the world can tell
me how to bat or how to not to bat.
I have to stick to my game plan,
stick to what has got me success
since I started playing cricket.
There is a certain way to bat in
different situations and I am willing
to do that.”
The attacking batsman says he has
learned to deal with intense
scrutiny and knows what works
best for him.
Rohit says he is always ready to fit
in as per the team’s requirements.
“I think when it comes to that it is
important to know what the captain
and the coach feel about it. My role
is simple. Whenever I am told to
play in a certain way, I am trying to
play in a certain way.
I won’t change my natural game, says
Rohit Sharma ahead of 4th Test match

Sakshi Malik became the
first Indian woman
wrestler to clinch an
Olympic medal at the Rio
Games on Wednesday. Her
bronze medal could act as
inspiration for many young
girls who want to pursue
sports and wrestling across
the country.
Being a role model is
nothing new for Sakshi.
Ever since her silver medal
at the 2014
Commonwealth Games in
Glasgow, she has been the
star the trainees at the
Chotu Ram Stadium in
Rohtak look up to. Over
the years, the training
centre has become the hub
of women’s wrestling in
the state and has produced
many champions.
Around 12 years ago,
Sakshi herself was inspired
by another wrestling
champ to take up the sport.
“I saw an article in a Hindi
newspaper about a senior
girl, Kavita Raj (a trainee
of the Chotu Ram
stadium), winning a medal
in the state championship,”
Sakshi had told HT before
leaving for Brazil. “Along
with the article, there was
a picture of Kavita in the
wrestling costume. At that
time I was just 11 or 12
years old and the wrestling
costume fascinated me so
much that I decided to take
up the sport,” she added
“When I told my mother
that I want to join
wrestling at the Chotu Ram
stadium, she was a bit
hesitant to start with. Later
she agreed. After I joined
the training centre, my
mother used to accompany
me to the stadium every
day till the time I became
old enough to commute on
my own. Even now, at
times, she comes to the
centre to watch me train,”
elaborated the champion.
Sakshi progressed through
age-group tournaments,
thereafter. Her big break
came when she won a
silver medal in the Junior
World Championships in
2010. After that she won
bronze in the 2013
C o m m o n w e a l t h
Championship.
Before the bronze in Rio,
Sakshi’s biggest medal in
the senior section was the
silver she won in the 2014
Commonwealth Games in
Glasgow and the bronze
medal in the Asian
Championship in 2015.

The junior football team of
Apeejay School, Noida, is
vying for first place in this
year’s Hindustan Times
Great Indian Football Action
(HT GIFA). The team was
the runners’ up in last year’s
tournament and wish to
improve their standing this
year. According to the team,
participating in GIFA last
year gave their confidence a
boost and made them realise
their talent in the game.
“Before GIFA, our parents
never took us or the game
seriously as cricket is more
prevalent here. They would
always tell us that it would be
better if we played cricket.
However, after we got to
represent our school at the
finals last year in GIFA, our
parents are proud of us and
support us as well,” said
Prateek Chellani, team
captain. With 10 members,
all aged between 14 years
and 15 years, the team said
they have improved upon
their game and have learnt
from their past mistakes at
GIFA. “Though our game
was strong all through the
GIFA tournament last year,
there were some mistakes
that stopped us from winning
the first position. Hence, we
have now decided that apart
from training hard, we will
also keep an eye on the game
of other teams in order to
know their strategies,” said
Sarthak Semwal, mid-fielder.
The team’s coach said that
playing at GIFA last year has
made the students better
players. “The whole team is
the same as last year. They
had reached the finals and
secured second position in
the tournament, which has
made them realise that the
first position is not that far. In
fact, they have become better
players now and have
matured in their game and
strategies,” said the team’s
coach Yusuf Ali.

Australia have ceded the No
1 Test ranking to India
following their 163-run
defeat in the third and final
Test against Sri Lanka in
Colombo on Wednesday.
India, who held the No 1
spot early in the year before
Australia reclaimed the top
ranking after a win over New
Zealand, will hold on to the
position if they defeat West
Indies in the fourth and final
Test starting in Port-of-
Spain, Trinidad, on
Thursday.
If India fail to defeat West
Indies, Pakistan, who drew
their series 2-2 against hosts
England this week, will be
anointed the highest-ranked
side.
According to an
International Cricket
Council (ICC) release,
Australia began their series
in Sri Lanka on 118 points,
but following their 106-run
loss in Pallekele and 229-run
defeat in Galle, followed by
the Colombo defeat, they
slipped to 108 points to be
level with England.
However, Australia are
ranked ahead of Alastair
Cook’s side. Pakistan have
moved up to second in the
rankings, just one point
behind their rivals.
If India win in Trinidad, they
will finish on 112 points, one
ahead of Pakistan. But they
will slip to 110 points if the
Test is drawn, and to 108 if
they lose to the Caribbean
side.

Clarifying like The Eagles did when
they regrouped after a long gap, John
Arne Riise returns to the Indian
Super League (ISL) saying he hadn’t
retired but was merely taking a
break. Riise, 35, will be the marquee
player for Chennaiyin FC in the third
edition of the Indian Super League
(ISL). He was with Delhi Dynamos
last season.
Three other teams --- Kerala
Blasters, Mumbai City FC and
Atletico de Kolkata (ATK) --- have
named marquees for ISL 3 that is
scheduled to begin in early October.
Among them Helder Postiga, who is
back at ATK, and Riise have prior
ISL experience.
Should talks with Florent Malouda,
Lucio and Simao Sabrosa go
forward, it is possible Delhi
Dynamos, FC Goa and Northeast
United FC respectively too would
retain their top player.
Diego Forlan, who will be Mumbai
City FC’s marquee, has visited India
but hasn’t played a competitive
match. Ditto for Aaron Hughes, who
will suit up for Kerala Blasters and
Eidur Gudjohnsen, who could for FC
Pune City as a marquee. “Back in
June I decided to take a break from
football but I always kept the door
open for a return and after speaking
to Marco (Materazzi, the Chennaiyin
FC coach) I found the motivation
again to work hard. So I would like
to thank Marco and the Chennaiyin
FC owners for believing in me.
Marco especially had a big influence
in my decision. I am honoured to
have the chance to play and work
under Marco. Working closely with
him will be a great experience for me
for my future coaching career also,”
said the defender who played for
Liverpool from 2001 to 2008 and
won the Champions League in 2005.
Riise has also played for Roma,
Fulham and APOEL FC and is
Norway’s most capped player with
110 internationals. Following his
stint with Delhi Dynamos, where he
scored one goal in 15 appearances,
Riise returned to Norway where he
played for Aalesunds FK, with
whom he had started his career
before moving to Monaco where he
won the French league. Known for
his long-rangers and free-kicks,
Riise made 10 appearances there
between March and May this year
and has joined Chennaiyin FC on a
free transfer.

Lewis Hamilton headed for the beach on
Monday following his victory in Sunday's
German Grand Prix, but it was a very
different story for his Mercedes team-mate
Nico Rosberg and their traditional rivals
Ferrari.
The defending world champion's fourth
successive win and sixth in seven races
gave him a 19-point lead in the title race
ahead of German Rosberg ahead of the
traditional European summer break.
After winning the four season-opening
races, Rosberg has been victorious only
once in eight and he faces a struggle to
regain lost ground in the closing nine
events starting with the Belgian Grand Prix
on August 28.
"This is going to take some time to digest
and work out," said Rosberg, who on
Sunday started on pole and finished fourth.
Since the Spanish Grand Prix in May, he
has also seen a 43-point advantage over
Hamilton turned around.
Rosberg's struggles allowed both Red
Bulls of Australian Daniel Ricciardo and
Dutch teenager Max Verstappen on to the
podium in second and third places. But for
Ferrari, it was an even more profound
setback to their high ambitions as four-
time champion Sebastian Vettel and Finn
Kimi Raikkonen came home fifth and
sixth.
This result meant that Red Bull moved 14
points clear of the Italian team in second
place in the constructors' standings - a dent
to the pride of the scarlet scuderia.

Tata Motors’ image revamp
is in full swing, with its
products featuring a new
design language and new-
age tech as well. The
change was also expected
to include the brand’s foray
into the performance
hatchback segment with
the Bolt Sport. While the
concept was showcased at
the 2015 Geneva Motor
Show and this year’s
Delhi Auto
Expo, it
looks like
the plans
for a
production
model have
been shelved. Instead, Tata
is expected to launch a
performance-spec Tiago,
which could be named the
'Tiago Plus'.
Sources say the model
could be launched as early
as this November, though
the brand has not
confirmed this, stating that
it does not comment on
future products. Tata could
either use the same engine
that would power the Bolt
Sport which produces
120PS or employ a
turbocharged and
remapped version of the 3-
cylinder ‘Revotron’ petrol
engine
currently used
in the Tiago. In
its current state of
tune, the engine produces
85PS of power and 114Nm
of torque. However, as is
the case with small
‘boosted’ engines, turbo-
lag will have to be
addressed, especially
considering the economy-
centric behaviour of the
standard motor.
So why has Tata chosen
the Tiago over the Bolt? In
all likelihood, it’s because
the Bolt hasn’t received a
strong enough response for
a high-performance variant
to do any better. The car
currently
averages less than 1,000
sales a month, while the
Tiago has been well-
received with monthly
sales of around 3,000 units.
Tata would stand to benefit
by offering another version
of the Tiago to capitalize
on the model’s on-going
success. Additionally, the
performance hatch could
undercut the likes of the
Baleno RS and Abarth
Punto
Performance-spec Tiago 'Plus'launch likely in November
