TURÛHÂT OF KÎAHK

BY

YOUHANNA NESSIM YOUSSEF

Introduction

The Coptic Church has a special rite for the month of Kîahk, es-pecially in the Psalmodia.1 The readings for the Sundays of the month of Kîahk are taken from the first chapter of the Gospel of Luke. There is even a special lectionary for this month.2

This rite was published several times;3 the first was published by Tukhi in 1764.4 He did not adhere to the original manuscript and made some changes according to the Catholic faith. Tukhi did not publish the Turûhât. In the years 1911-1922 CLAUDIUS LABIB5 published the first Coptic Orthodox edition of this book.6 He pub-lished the first Tarh in Coptic and Arabic and the second Tarh in Arabic only. The text is slightly different from the text of the manuscript.

O.H.E. BURMESTER7 while studying the Turûrât, referred to the edition of the Psalmodia and provided the incipit.8

In LABIB’s edition, there is no division between stanzas, the title has a note “تقرأ املقدمة باللحن مث ربعني او ثالثة من الطرح ايضًا”, “Read the intro-duction with tunes and then two or three stanzas”; the second text of each Sunday is entitled: “وله ايضا مع التوسيع يف الشرح”, “To him also with expanded explanation.” This infers that the tunes of Tarh were lost.

The text of LABIB provides the first Sunday from Luke 1:5-23. The second Sunday is from Luke 1:26-38, the third Sunday is from Luke 1:38:56, and the fourth Sunday is from Luke 1:57-80.

The text of LABIB is almost completely taken from the scrip-tures,9 while in our manuscript, the texts are divided into stanzas. We may notice that the stanzas of the tune Adam are shorter than the stanzas Batos. Hence the composer took some freedom with regards to the biblical text.

In our edition, we respect the division of stanzas and we also provide the Coptic text for the Tarh Adam.

The text published here for the first time, has several benefits: It provides for the reader the Coptic text which is not

available in many manuscripts; It provides the text divided into stanzas; It corrects the ideas presented in C. LABIB’s edition and

repeated by Burmester.
