The most pitiful and yet the most grotesquesight that meets the eye o f today is the presumptuons fool

and believing he is persistently closing his innero r spiritual sight to the real possibilities of Life .These are concealed from him
,because he has
never developed his Inner or Soul Sight sufficientto realize or know that the most valuable asset inlife is to “Know Thyself
” and to see with theInner or Spiritual Sight .This book gives real instruction and
,Indian
teachings, as they are known in South India. Hewho really and truly desires knowledge, and issincere
,faithful and steadfast in his efforts to
obtain it,will learn a great deal from this work.
The half-brained,lazy
,complaining fool
,who is
always suspicious of others robbing him, will
learn nothing here nor from no other book. Hewho is eternally crying and complaining
,is he who
disbelieves ; and he who disbelieves, that is , hasno belief or confidence in himself to learn something from a book, is like the fool who complainedbecause he could not see
,while at the same time
he was standing in his own light .So be careful that you are not guilty of standing in your own light .

o f the Adepts the more grows your conception
o f that life and world called Spirit, not seen bythe outward sight .The Occultism
, anatomy, physio logy, and psycho logywhich they teach make of man somethingimmeasurably greater than the puny and impotent being known to modern science as a compound o f bones , muscles , and nerves . Modernscience (materialism ) attempts to prove that manis an animal ; the teachings o f the A depts showthat he may be a God . Modern science investshim with the power to lift his own weight ; ancientscience (Occult Philosophy) invests him with thepower to control the destiny of the world . Mo‘dern science allows him to live for a very limitednumber of years ; ancient science teaches that healways existed
,and will never cease to exist if he
desires to live . Modern science deals with theinstrument that the real man uses as long and asoften as he comes into relationship with the worldo f phenomena
,and she mistakes that instrument
fo r the man ; the A depts show you the true natureo f the essential man
, to whom one earthly existence is nothing more than one of the many incidents o f his eternal Spiritual career. This power of spiritual perception

o ur Western countries of modern civilization, because learning is often separated from wisdomand the inner or Spirit Sight, and the calculatingintellect seeking for worms in the dark cavernso f the earth cannot see the genius that floatstoward the light and it cannot realize his existence. And yet this ancient science (Occultism ) ,which the modern ignore
,is as old as the world .
It was known to the ancient prophets, to theArhats and Rishis of the East ; to initiated Brahmin s, Egyptians, and Greeks and the HinduSages . Its fundamental doctrines are found inthe Hindu Vedas and the Sacred Books of theEast. Upon these secret doctrines rest the fundaments of the religions and secret orders of theworld . They formed the essence of the secretsthat were revealed only to the initiated in theinner temple
,where the ancient mysteries were
taught, and whose disclosure to the vulgar wasforbidden under the penalty of torture and death .
They were secrets known to the ancient sages andto the Hindu Adepts and Rosicrucians of theMiddle Ages
,and upon a partial understanding
o f their truths rests the system o f modernFreemasonry.
They arenot to be confounded with speculativephilosophy
,that reasons from the known to that

o f logi c and orthodoxy to grope i ts way into the
darkness, and to feel the objects which it cannotsee. These doctrines were taught by the seers o f
o ld who possessed spiritual power and the innersight to see. Such men were the great religiousreformers of all ages , from Confucius and Zo ro aster down to Jacob Boehme and Eckartshausen, and their teachings have beenwverified by everyo ne whose purity o f mind and whose power o f
intellect have enabled him to see and to understand the things o f the spirit (Go d) .
Some o f their doctrines refer to morals andethics
,others are of a purely scientific character ;
but both aspects o f their teachings are intimatelyconnected together, because beauty cannot beseparated from truth . They both form the twopages o f a leaf in the book o f universal Nature, whose understanding confers upon the reader notmerely opinions
,but knowledge
,and renders him
not only learned, but illuminated with wisdom
and Spirit-Sight-A t-Will .Among those who have taught the moral aspect
o f the secret doctrine there are none greater thanBuddha, Plato , and Jesus o f Nazareth ; of thosewho have taught its scientific aspect there havebeen none more profound than Hermes
,Trisme
‘gistus, Pythagoras , and Paracelsus . They o b
tained their knowledge no t merely from following

the prescribed methods of learning, or by accepting the opinions of the “ recognized authoritiesof “ their times ,
” but they studied nature by herown light
,and learned the lesson “Know Thy
self,
” and they became lights themselves, whose
rays illuminate the world of mind . What theytaught has been to a certain extent verified andamplified by the teachings of Eastern Adepts
(Y oghis ) , and Hieroyhants of the Orient.
THE LIGHT o r WISDOM .
There is an art, known only to a few, by whichthe purified and faithful soul of man may beinstructed and illuminated so as to be raised atonce from the darkness of ignorance (materialism ) to the light of wisdom and knowledge.
If the soul is perfectly purified and sanctified itbecomes free in its movements
,it sees and recog
nizes the Divine light, and instructs itself
,while it
seems to be instructed by another. In this statethe soul requires no other admonition except itsown realization, which is the head
'
and guide ofthe soul .It is then no more subject to terrestrial conditions of time
,but lives in the eternal ; and for the
human soul to desire a thing is to possess italready.
THE MAGIC A ND OCCU'LTISM OF INDIA.‘Z
Man ’s power to realize increases in proportionas this ethereal and celestial power of light penetrates his mind
,and
,developing his inner sight
o r Spirit sight, it may enable him to, see and perceive that which he interiorly thinks , just as if itwere objective and external. Spirit being uni tyand independent o f our idea s of space
,and all men
having therefore essentially the same spirit, the
soul o f men existing at places widely distant fromeach other may thus enter into communication
( telepathy) , and converse with each other exactlyin the same manner as if they had met in theirphysical bodiesIn this state man may perform a great manythings in an exceedingly short period of time
,so '
that it may seem to us as if he had required no
time at all to perform it . Such a man is able tocomprehend and understand everything by thelight of the universal power ( spirit ) o r guidingintelligence with which he is spontaneously united .
Again, that there is a certain kind o f Spiritualforce
,occult influence or energy
,based o n the
existence o f the spiritual and Astral world, placed
without,not within
,the body
,and into communica
tion with which the human soul o f man can enterby and through the law and principal of realization, has long been demonstrated as a fact . Thatthese invisible forces ( evil spirits who are earth
8 MYSTIC TEST BOOK, HINDU OCCULT CHA MBERS.
bound and exist in the Astral body ) can controla man and break him do wn as easily as the fearfulhurricane sweeps all before it, striking him in athousand places at the same time, without hisbeing able to perceive the invisible fo e or beingable to protect himself, is also proven .
But that these forces may be dominated andinvoked
,so that they will obey the thoughts,
answer to the voice and understand the meaning o ftraced signs, is what many cannot realize andwhat their reason rejects ; yet this also is capableo f being demonstrated and proven . The readerand student should always bear in mind that intrying to demonstrate these things for himself heis working with unseen and powerful agents
,
which, if he is not equally powerful, pure and highminded
,loving his fellow-men
,and seeking to
benefit mankind, rather than seeking or desiringOccult powers to further his own selfish interests,he had much better be dead than to try any o f
these things for the gratification of his personalnature ; for in seeking to harm another, curses, like chickens , return home to roost, with a muchgreater force than the original impulse .
Thus , again, we should look within rather thanwithout, as the exercise of True Magic does no trequire any ceremonies or conjurations
,o r the
making of circles and signs ; it only requires a

strong faith, gained through a knowledge o f nature ’s laws, which can accomplish anything, if itacts through a human m ind which is in harm onywith these laws, witho ut which no thing useful canbe done . True Magic also consists in true faith ;but true faith rests in spiritual knowledge
,and
without that kind of knowledge there can be nofaith ; this is o nly o btained by developing o ne
’s
own inner and m o st lo fty nature: The conjuration o f the evil spirits o f the Astral plane ( sorcery, black magic and witchcraft ) means practically afull realization o f “Faust and the Demon .
”
There are many strange things set forth in thefollowing pages , almost to o strange to believe, yetbecause o ne is ignorant o f their existence it doesnot follow that they are no t real, as the sad records o f Sorcery and Witchcraft
, o f Voodooismand The Black Art abundantly testify.
Man does not know himself, therefore he does
no t understand the things o f the invisible world.
Each man has the essence o f the Divine ( Spiritual )within himself ; he possesses one kind o f knowledge as much as another, and he who does no tfind that which is in him he cannot truly say hedoes no t possess it, only he is not as yet capableo f successfully seeking it.Therefo re, in seeking, always bear in m ind

s oul and the human will to comprehend . spiritual
truths, and n o t by basing its co nclusions upon
external appearances caused by the illusio n o f thesenses o r o f selfish purpo ses .
The writer ’s teachings are, that our soul is the
vehicle of celestial attraction,transferring celes
tial and spiritual virtue into Seals , I m ages, A mulets, Rings, Papers, Glasses , etc . Also
,he has
endeavored to give the most clear and rationalillustration o f the wonderful Occult sympathy andantipathy
,attraction and repulsion between all
things in the universe .
He has likewise proved how cures are performedby virtue of sympathetic powers and medicines,by sea ls, rings, and amulets, even at unlimiteddistances
,which he has been a witness o f
,and are
daily confirmed in the true and certain beliefo f . This same being taught in “The GreatBook of Magical, Hindu Magic and East IndianOccultism.
The writer knows how to communicate withany person
,and to give him intimation o f pur
pose, at a hundred o r a thousand miles distance ;but then a preparation is necessary
,and the par
ties should have their appointed seasons andhours for that purpose ; likewise, both should beo f the same firm constancy of mind
,and a disciple
or brother in OCCULTISM o r ADEPTSHIP.
THE MAGIC AND OCCULTISM OF INDIA. 11
There is also given methods whereby a man mayreceive true and certain intimation of futurethings (by dreams ) of whatsoever his mind hasbefore meditated upon
,himself being properly
disposed .
Likewise, there is recited the various methodsused by the ancients for the invocation o f spiritsfrom the ASTRAL PLANE ; different forms o fMAGICAL EXORCISM, incantations, orations ,binding o f spirits, conjurations ; all o f which isthe knowledge taught by the Eastern ADEPTSand the most famous MAGICIANS, such asZoroaster, Hermes, Apollonius , Simon o f theTemple
,Trithemius, Agrippa, Porta ( the Neapo l
itan ) , Dr. Dee, Paracelsus, Roger Bacon, and agreat many others ; to which the au thor has subjoined notes, endeavoring to point out the difference o f the arts, so as to free the name o f Magicfrom any scandalous imputation
,seeing it is a
word originally significative not o f any evil, buto f every good and laudable science
,such as a man
might profit by, and become both WISE andhappy ; and the knowledge o f OCCULTISM is sofar from being offensive to science o r man thatthe very root or ground of all Magic takes its risefrom the Orient and British West Indies .The Hindus were the first Magicians
,for by
their high and excellent knowledge theyknew that

the Occult power which was promised was bornin all men . Therefore, let no one be offended atthe venerable and sacred title o f Magician o r
Adept—a title which every WISE m an"‘m erits
while he pursues that path which “ Jesus theMaster” himself trod

,humility
,charity

mercy,fa sting, etc . ; and, again, men should
“Bewise as serpents
,and harmless as doves . ” Such
instructions as these are frequently named andgiven in many places of the ancient Mysteries .
“The Great Book o f Magical Art, Hindu Magicand East Indian Occultism, referred to elsewherein this work
,also forms a complete treatise on the
mysteries o f OCCULTISM and CEREMONIALMAGIC
,by the study o f which a man (who can
separate himself from material objects, by themodification of the sensual appetite—abstinencefrom drunkenness, gluttony, and other bestial passions
,and who lives pure and temperate
,free
from actions which degenerate a man to a brute )may become a recipient o f Divine Light and knowledge ; by which he may foresee things to come, whether to private families or kingdoms, or states, empires
,battles, victories , etc. ; and likewise be
capable o f doing much good to his fellow-creatures , such as the healing of all disorders, mentaland physical
,and assisting with the comforts o f
life the unfortunate and distressed.
THE MAGIC A ND o ccuLTI SM o r INDIA. 13
Further, the writer has spoken in that famouswork
,largely o f prophetic dreams and visions
throughout the different chapters, and has givenvaluable knowledge , fully set down fo r the info rmation of the WISE,
some few most secret thingsbeing reserved by the author for his pupils only, not to be taught by publication .
If in these writings the Author seems oracularand dogmatic, it is because he writes from thestandpoint o f the true Adept and Seer ratherthan that of the scientist or materialistic philo sopher, o r the orthodox theologian
,and depends
fo r the recognition and acceptance o f the absolutetruth more upon its clear and positive enunciationthrough the soul than upon
“
its exposition anddefense by argument .

” If you desire the knowledgeto secure revenge, it is but proper that I shouldwarn you that thou wilt, in any Of the experimentscontained in these treatises
,draw o r attract to
thyself a revengeful demon,or an accursed infer

and they will be allotted thee, who will gratify
thy inordinate desire Of vain glory ; for all theseoffices are there evil spirits who have been allotted,and they are ever eager to merge their evil willand spirit with yours ; they will through the samelaw attract thee to their own nature, and serveall thy desires and purposes according to theextent as thy desires are , and from what principles they proceed, so shalt thou be answered ;but if thou desirest the knowledge but for thehonor and glory o f thy soul (GOD ) and to helpthy fellow-men, and, in great humility, fill thyheart with the love Of all mankind, thou shalt thenattract a good spirit, which will grant thy desires ;

STATE OF INTROSPECTION .
By and through the law Of realization, inspiration is awakened and established . Again
,by and
through the exercise of the powers Of Auto-suggestion
,self-thought, the supreme realization of
self, and the innermost desire Of life are reached
and manifested, withholding all doubt, whichopens up to us and connects us with the inwardo r latent supreme possibilities of soul (God ) .To have appreciative knowledge Of this exaltedcondition Of inspiration before it is experienced, and Of the separate and distinct planes Of conscio usness and the specific dormant forces theyinvolve
,it will be necessary to keep before the
mind the conception that we can, by constant application o f suitable Auto-suggestion, manifest

This inspiration,realization o r psychic con

INFLUENCE,MEDIUM SHIP A N D INNER SIGHT .
On the west coast of India, about one hundred
and thirty miles north of Bombay, lies the city Of
Baroda . Here the writer has seen many m iracdlous occult feats o n many different occasions, performed in precisely the same manner, and themystery to the outsider seemed only to deepenwith every repetition. The Spirit and Occult powers o f the Hindus have been the wonder of Indiafrom a time antedating, perhaps , the building Ofthe first pyramid .
The early Jesuit Fathers and other pious orthodox hair brained mortals
,startled at the sight
,
and at a total loss to account for it,very promptly
attributed it to the devil, and this ingenious ex
planation is still persisted in by the missionariesand those superstitious
,ignorant followers Of
Theology Of the present, who assert that it i s a sineven to witness these performances, and who
anathematize the,Y ohis as agents Of Satan.
Many are the wonders Of Hindu Magic. I
might go on relating a hundred or more Of wonder

ful significance, and in every respect strange,
which have been witnessed in that gorgeous lando f the East, which, even in this nineteenth centuryo f merciless Western materialism, is more Of afairyland than Arabia ever was at the time o f
Haroun al Raschid .
That earliest cradle Of o ur race and civilization,Hindustan
,still holds the key to many Occult mys
teries . In the shade of its palm groves , in the
depths of its jungles , in the wild recesses Of itsmountains
,and behind the walls Of its temples and
lamaseries there yet lurks many a secret, which
will tax the ingenuity of your best Western reasoners for ages to come. The Eastern adepts and Hierophants , throughtheir long practice Of thought and attention
,and
the art Of contemplation and ancestral practice fo rcenturies , as well as the invocation o f the spiritsof the Astral Plane, have developed an intellectualinsight
,subtlety Of thought , power Of metaphysical
analysis and philosophical reasoning which dwarfsinto insignificance the best product o f o urWesternSchools .
There is a strange fascination in solitude. Man,
that singular admixture o f the bestial and divinewho in the society o f his own species delights in

being paltry and trivial,in developing the more
ignoble and clownish side o f his nature, becomes adifferent being when by necessity o r choice he isleft to his own meditations . The silence Of theforests
,the stillness Of the desert, the vast expanse
o f the ocean, o r the unbroken quiet Of somesecluded nook
,awaken in him thoughts and feel
ings which the bustle Of every-day life Can neverengender. Then the man is apt to propound tohimself the great Old riddle, a nd to descend intothe abysmal depths Of his own consciousness .
THE LAW FOR AN ADEPT .
To one, then, who would become an Adept, and
enter in earnest upon the proce ss Of induction intothe higher states and planes of consciousness , theimportance o f recognizing and Observing the lawand adopting the habits which belong to the higherlife he is seeking, will be apparent . That law istemperance in eating and drinking
,and modera
tion in all the functions and relations of sex, avoidmg I n both those indulgences which pervertedactivities and abnormal desires demand .
THE THREE SPECIFIC OCCULT STEPS .
T here are but three steps involved in the act o fwithdrawing from the sense-plane (material

world ) and entering into communi cation with thethings of either the psychic world or the spiritualplane
,and they are so simple that the humblest
intellect can comprehend them. The first is tobring the activities Of the personal ego into absolute stillness
,by diverting Or withdrawing the
attention and thought from everything relatingto things for the sense-life, and centering themupon the specific Object chosen for i nterior f co n
templation . The second is to empty the mind alsoOf everything relating to self—interest
,and lay
down all preimpressions , prejudgments and personal predilections , that the mind may be a perfectblank
, o n which the truth, undisturbed or unob
structed by the bias Of prejudice or personaldesire
,may write its own story. The third is to
firmly hold the'
mind in this unbiased receptiveattitude upon the object in the full expectation o f
thus receiving the desired truth .
It should be remembered that on the innerpsychic plane the soul activities Of everything produce vibrations upon the psychic or etherealatmosphere
,which is SO subtile and elastic that
these vibrations extend indefinitely . When themind is emptied and still
,or passive
,and Opens
itself to the psychic plane and the spirit world,
and the attention is centered upon any given Objecto r person, the soul vibrations of that particular

Object become focused upon the psychic organism,
and awaken in the consciousness Of the listener thevery truth Of that which made the vibrations . Ifthe soul be in a p erfectly receptive attitude, andyou have attained, it can take on the condition andthus enter into such sympathetic u nity with thedominant states Of the person o r

thing upon whichthe attention is fixed that it will sense and knowthem as perfectly as if they were its own , SO thereal character and condition Of persons and thingsbecomes as tangible and real to the soul Of thepsychometrist as if they were his own.
CLAIRVOYANCY.
If,then, any one would enter into the secret life,
real character and true condition Of persons andthings
, SO as to know the absolute truth concerning them
,he must get mentally still
,hold his
attention steadily upon them, and keep in perfectly
receptive and, unbiased attitude toward them .
When this attitude Of mind and will is perfectlyheld, the vibrations on the psychic ether from thespontaneous activities Of the Object upon which theattention is centered, will be gathered up in thepersonal life
,and made to reproduce to and in the
personal consciousness,the original condition that
p roduced them, and thus be made to tell their own

story without dissimulation o r abating one jo t o rtittle Of the truth in the matter . The same holdstrue o f any particular or special thing which it isdesirable and legi timate to know concerning them.
When the attention is held in this receptive attitude upon such specific matter to learn the exacttruth concerning it, that particular truth will bemade clear and certain to the listening consciousnessIt will thus be seen that this necessary listeningand receptive attitude is possible only when thesoul desires the absolute truth independent Of allprejudgm ent, o r any bias Of personal consideration . We do n o t listen to an o ther

s co nversation
while we are talking to him ,neither can we receive
the true story Of another ’s life or character onthe psychic plane with our mind upon him, full o factive prejudgment, and the bias Of personal co nsiderations .This attitude Of des1r1ng and seeking the truthand nothing but the truth
,independent of all per
sonal consideratio n and bias, involves also the
attitude and determination to be absolutely just onthe basis Of this truth, independent Of all personalconsideration or bias Of any kind whatsoever. This attitude will prevent any misuse o f theknowledge of the truth thus gained

mind and feelings Of every bias and standard ofself and sense ; that is, put out Of the mind everything relating to the sense-life and the desires ofself
,thus putting the soul in a
'
perfectly receptiveattitude for the unbiased and unobstructed revelation Of truth . Second : When this passive stateis fully induced
,fix and hold the attention in the
passive yet expectant attitude upon the specificObject about which the truth is desired . ThirdThese two steps having been fully taken
,stand
firmly and persistently in the receptive and listening attitude toward the Object fo r the immediaterevelation Of the truth concerning it, and in thefull expectation Of getting it, and
“acco rding to
your faith”
shall it be do ne unto yo u . Thisreceptive state
,and listening
,expectant attitude,
will certainly open the consciousness to the psychicvibrations which write unerringly their story o n
the receptive mind .
If,in this third step
,we entertain doubts and
questionings,we are not holding the receptive and
listening attitude . This was the co nstant attitudeand normal condition Of “Jesus The Master
,
” andso without study or effort he always stood in thelight Of absolute truth concerning everything withwhich he came into personal relations . He said :“I . can o f m ine own self do n o thing ; as I hear, I
judge (always in the listening attitude for the

inner voice o r revelation ) : and my judgm ent is
just; because I seek no t m ine own will, but alwayslisten to the inner vo ice from the astral plane .
”
TO gain the mastery Of these three steps,SO as
to be able to assume this attitude at will, requiresno more qualification
,attention and persevering
application than does the mastery Of any of theordinary accomplishments
,as music
,art
,or the
mechanical handicrafts Of industry ; but, as in allthese
,the Neophyte may be greatly helped by the
personal sympathy and guidance Of those whohave had experience in overcoming
,and have
attained some degree of experimental Adeptship .
Very few,if any
,will succeed absolutely without
this . Even Jesus needed and received the sympathy and ministry Of John the Baptist . Wheretwo Of you are agreed, etc ., it Shall be done forthem.
There is one advantage in seeking the masteryOf these three steps over that
“
of the ordinaryaccomplishments Of life , and that is the immediatehelp Of divine inspiration if the seeker begin atthe center Of his being ; since this brings him atonce under the transforming chemistry Of thespiritual life

Those who in the true sense deserve the appellation of “ADEPTS ” in India are vno t the speculative philosophers o r elaborations Of cosmogonies .The real adepts are Often remarkably deficient inphilosophical and even general information .

, Yet these men were the custodianso f Occult power and secrets for which many anintellectual giant would readily exchange twentyyears Of his life, secrets which SO far have successfully baffled the researches o f the best Westernthinkers and experimenters
,and which not only

SPECIFIC METHODS OF CONCENTRATION .
The great principle which underlies the almostendless modification of Hindu Occultism may beembodied in the term “ABSTRACTION ”
namely, the attainment Of as complete a state of
introspective vision as possible,by the withdrawal
Of the senses Of sight, hearmg, touch, etc., from theexternal world .
Perhaps it will be Of advantage to the reader ifI here describe a little more fully what is meantby introspection. Suppose a mathematician inorder to master some intricate problem were toseek refuge within the solitude Of his four wallsand endeavor to concentrate his mind completelyupon the task before him. Now
,if his success
depended upon his power to reach completeabstraction, he would speedily discover that he wasfar from reaching the desired goal ; although hemight secure solitude, he would not be able toexclude sound, for various noises are bound toreach and attract part Of hl S attention, in spite ofthe most rigid application Of his will.Assuming
,however
,that all sound were ex
cluded, there are impressions of Sight which are
an equal if not a greater Obstacle in the path ofhim who would seek to attain the introspectivestate .
THE MAGIC A ND OCCULTISM o r INDI A. 31
He might resort to the simple method of shutting his eyes
,hoping thereby to g et rid Of the
external world and reach the introspective state.Futile effort ! There still would remain the conscio usness of that fact that Objects Of variouskinds were surrounding him,
which is a. disturbinginfluence .Now,
granting that the perceptions Of sound, sight
,and even touch
,could for a time at least be
completely extinguished,there still would remain
o f this o r that sorrow Of frustrated hopes,Of busi
ness troubles, o f all the petty vexations and annoyanecs of life .
Unless these also be completely annihilated,
there can be no such thing as abstraction in thesense Of the esoteric philosophy Of India . Thevari ous methods followed by the students OfOccultism in the Far East , from the fakir to thegreatest adept
,have only one sole aim—namely
,
the attainment Of a state Of complete intro spection o r interior concentration of the mind .
When this condition is reached,as all Masters
know,
“The mind is a scroll upon which naturewill write. ” In other words
,the Adept in that
state identifies himself with the Astral world o r
universal consciousness, and partakes in a measure Of the divine attribute Of omniscience as wellas omnipotence .
MYSTI C TEST B OOK, HI NDU OCCULT CHAMBERS.
CRYSTAL GAZING AMONG THE HINDU SEERS .
Among the Hindu Seers and initiates the praetice Of crystal-gazing is largely followed as ameans Of enforcing the introspective condition .
A piece o f crystal, usually polished (Japaneseballs Of rock crystal about three inches in diameter are in common use all over India ) , IS placedbefore the Observer, who will seek some solitaryspot and steadily gaze on the shining surface. The student who practices crystal-gazing
(
willObtain results which will be a surprise and arevelation to him.
The eye should be placed on a level with thecrystal and about ten Inches away from the latter ;a light must be adjusted sideways
,so that its image
is not in the line Of vision, and a piece Of black
cloth should be Suspended behind the crystal.Within less than two minutes the Adept hasattained a degree Of introspection
,and will then
behold in the Astral light which will envelop thecrystal surface whatever he wishes to ascertain ;fo r instance, what a certain person i s doing at acertain moment. Even the past and future willbecome revealed and he can read your past andfuture as easily as you are reading this page .
A little practice two o r three times a day willenable almost any o ne to reach this degree o f
THE MAGIC AND OCCULTISM OF INDIA. 33
Occultism, and the clearness of the images thusobtained
,coupled with the correctness of the in
formation, will be an everlasting surprise to the
Neophyte.Of course
,what he apparetly sees in the crystal
is in reality transpiring in the Astral light . Hehas reached a degree of introspective vision, butis obliged to make use of some external tangibleobject, which for the time being becomes hismedium. A plain or concave mirror
,set in a
wooden frame,and floated upon water
,will answer
the same purpose, and many Fakirs enforce theabstract condition by merely gazing into the waterwhich theyhave poured into a small earthen bowl. The breathing exercises resorted to by the socalled Hatha Y ogha school Of Occultism have noo ther purpose than to identify the consciousnesso f the individual with that of the astral plane, andfifty pages might be filled with a description Ofthe endless variety Of methods which this schoo lenj om s .
The true adept, however, who has attained tothe highest pinnacles Of esoteric wisdom
,scorns to
make use Of these external and to him childishmo des Of introspection ; he has come to recognizethat “ the truth lies within the depth of his own
consciousness, and he can place himself in theabstract state within a few seconds by mere will

,for instance,
the details Of the battle Of Maineaud were discussed in the bazaars Of Calcutta for days beforethe news was received at headquarters

as it were, and from village to village . There are
intervening mountain ranges and great deserts,
villages and hamlets many miles apart and extensive ranges

is to be met with . Besides the Hindus are notgiven to much travel, and there is little, if any, intercommunication by means Of letters or messages of any sort . Why, the news Of the greatdisaster which befell Napoleon ’s army at Moscowtook over Six weeks to reach Paris

Mr. C. W. Leadbeater, in his vo lum e, The
Other Side o f Death,”says
CLAIRVOYANCE IN SPIRITUALISM .
Many of the phenomena commonly displayedat a spiritualistic gathering are simply the manifestation of the ordinary powers and faculties

natural to the astral plane, such as are possessedby every dead man .
“ I have already explainedin my little work on Clairvoyance what thesepowers are
,and any one who will take the trouble
to read that will see how clearly the possession ofsuch sense accounts for the faculty so often exhibited by the dead Of reading a closed book o r
a sealed letter,or describing the contents of a
locked box .
” I have had repeated evidencethrough many different mediums o f the possession of this power ; sometimes the knowledge obtained by its means was given out through themedium ’s body in trance-speaking
,and at other
times it was expressed directly by the dead man,
either in his own voice or by slate-writing.
”
These astral faculties sometimes include a certain amount of provision
,though this is possessed
in very varying degrees ; and they also frequentlygive the power of psychometry and of lookingback to some extent into events of the past.”“The way in which this is sometimes done isshown in the following story

Lee, in his Glimpses o f the Supernatural, vo l. ii,p .
THE MISSING PAPERS .
A commercial firm at Bolton,in Lancashire
,
had found that a considerable sum of money which

had been sent to their bank by a confidential clerkhad not been placed to their credit . ” “The clerkremembered the fact of taking the money
,though
not the particulars, but at the bank nothing was
known of it . The clerk, feeling that he was liable
to suspicion in the matter, and anxious to eluci
date it,sought the help of a Spirit-medium . The
medium promised to do her best . Having heardthe story, she presently passed into a kind o f
trance . Shortly after,She said : ‘I see yo u go to
the bank— I see you go to such and such a part o fthe bank— I see you hand some papers to a clerkI see him put them in such and such a place undersome. other papers—and I see them there now.
’
“The clerk went to the bank, directed thecashier where to look for the money
,and it was
found ; the cashier afterwards remembering thatin the hurry of business he had there depositedit . A relation of mine saw this story in a newspaper at the time , and wrote to the firm in question
,the name of which was given, asking whether
the facts were as stated . He was told in replythat they were . The gentleman who was appliedto

‘Your account is a co rrect one . I havethe answer of the firm to my enquiry at homenow.

THE MAGIC AND OCCULTISM OF INDIA. 6 1
The description given does not make it abso
lutelyclear whether this was a case of clairvoyance on the part o f the medium
,or of the use of
ordinary faculty by a dead man ; but since themedium passed into a trance-condition the lattersupposition seems the more probable. The deadman could easily gather from the clerk ’s mindthe earlier part of his story
,and thus put himself
on rappo rt with the scene ; and then by followingit to its close he was able to supply the information required . Here is the authenticated recordo f another good example of such a case
,in which
the power of thought-reading is much more prominently exhibited, since all the questions were mental . It is extracted from the Repo rt o n Spiritualism

,London
,in 1871

A LOST WILL .

we had a s!ance ; we sat at a table, and soon theraps came ; my friend then asked his questions
mentally ; he went over the alphabet himself, o r

sometimes I did so,not knowing the question .
We were told ( that ) the will had been drawn by aman named William Walter, who lived at Whitechapel ; the name of the street and the number ofthe house were given . We went to Whitechapel
,
found the man,and subsequently
,through his aid
,
obtained a copy of the draft ; he was quite un
known to us,and had not always lived in that
locality, for he had once seen better days . The
medium could not possibly have known anythingabout the matter
,and even if she had
,her knowl
edge would have been of no avail, as all the questions were mental ones .
CLAIRVOYANT READINGS .
This power of clairvoyance is also frequentlydisplayed in a minor way at the weekly meetingso f which I have spoken . After the trance addressis over
,the medium usually expresses her readi
ness to give descriptions,or “ readings ,
” as theyare often called
,of the surroundings of various
members Of the audience . Where the circle is asmall one
,something will be said to each of its
members in turn ; if there be a large number gathered together
,individuals will be selected and
called up for special attention .
I have heard striking fragments of private

Cho rus .
“How lovely !how wonderful ! Ain ’tit beautiful to think they can come back like this !’
I have heard just about that sort of conversationa score of times ; and it is naturally not calculatedto produce a very robust faith in that particularmedium. Yet perhaps through the very sameilli terate woman there would come on another o ccasion some message about a matter of which shecould by no possibility have known anything—a
message which she could never have evolved fromher sordid consciousness by any amount of clumsyguess-work .
A PRI VATE TEST.
I remember on one such occasion applying alittle private test of my own to a medium in apoor London suburb . She was a coarse-lookingwoman
,whom I had never seen before
,but she
seemed earnest enough, though far from cultured .
She went on from one member o f the circle to an

them spirits with flowing robes and smiling faces ;she varied the story a little in my own case bygiving me a dark-looking foreign gentleman
,
with something white round his head,
” which mayvery possibly have been true enough
,or may have
been merely a coincidence. It occurred to me to try whether she could see athought-form, so as a change from all these reverond white-haired sp I rits with flowing robes
,I
set myself to project as strong a mental image asI could construct Of two chubby boys in Etons
,
standing behind the chair o f the member of thecircle who was next in order for examination .
Sure enough, when that person’s turn came
,the
medium ( o r the man speaking through her, if therewas one
"
) described my imaginary boys with tolerable accuracy
,and represented them as sons o f
the lady behind whom they stood. The latter denied this
,explaining that her sons "were grown
men ,and the medium then suggested grandchil
dren,which was also repudiated
,so the mystery
remained unsolved“ But from the incident I deduced two conclusions : First, that either the medium was genuinely clairvoyant or there reallywas a dead person speaking through her ; and secl
o ndly, that whoever was concerned had not yetsufficient discernment to distinguish a thought

earnestly and quietly into the glass and tell exactly what you see or what is given to you ; remember that o u no account must you reason ; to dos o is fatal ; simply make your mind blank and say

Unless the Crystal Vision is very true and clearyou will find that many things half formed in theglass will come to your mind as quite vivid pictures, since it is not the virtue of the glass butyour own Spirit Sight which can read the AURAo r see in the Astra] light o f those who “consult yo u.

To return to the AURA or Astral Light, this is a
very important consideration, since as soon as youare able to perceive this about a person you canread meanings in the play o f its color as it surrounds every man
,woman and child .
The AURA or Astral Light is a mist-like emanation which arises from every animate and inanimate object .The AURA or Astral Light thrown o ff by peopleis composed of tiny atoms of so minute a characterit is entirely imperceptible to the naked eye
,but is
clearly visible to those who have succeeded in socontrolling themselves that they can obtain thestate of introspection and see spiritually at will. This is referred to Often in Europe and Americaas Clairvoyant Sight. The AURA is of the natureo f a cloud which entirely surrounds the person sitting, and it is through reading this either know

ingly o r unconsciously that the Clairvoyant is ableto deduce the events in the lives of those aroundhim.
The ability to see this AURA or read in theAstral Light
,is only acquired after long practice
and psychic training, which means that you haveto sit regularly, to eat temperately, to have com
plete control over temper, your feelings, true faithand belief in yo urself to get results ; and also itmeans sexual purity and continence
,yet without
doubt the results more than repay one for theeffort required to obtain them.
It is best when the clairvoyant faculty or yourSpirit Sight has been developed to the necessarydegree
,to sit lOOking quietly at the subject, with
o ut winking the eyes at all, m ake the mind blankand gaze very steadily for at least ten or fifteenminutes in silence ; at the end o f that time you willperceive by your Spirit Sight the health AURA o r
Astral Light, which is a kind of bluish grey mistarising from the body ; when you see this youare getting on and other developments may beexpected to follow.
Mr. C . W. Leadbeater in speaking of A stralTho ught-fo rm s in his wo rk,

with self o r tainted by any desire for his own gaininstantly draws round itself matter o f the astralplane as well as of the mental, and remains hovering round him . If any man yields frequently tothoughts of this type
,he makes for himself exceed
ingly strong thought-forms , which are constantlyfed and rendered more and more powerful by eachrecurrence of the feeling. During physical lifethese are invisible to him
,although their influence
is constantly reacting upon him and tending toreproduce in him the thought which created them ;but after death they become visible and hauntingforms from which he cannot escape
,because their
attraction to him is of the very essence of theirnature . In many cases it is in this way that menfirst come to realize how ugly and hateful some oftheir thoughts may be
,and so they learn to exo r

A man may sometimes find himself surrounded
by thoughts which are not his own, for if any oneelse is directing towards him any strong feeling, whether it be of love or hate, o f joy or sorrow,
he will certainly find the thought-form which expresses it hovering about him

Apparitions are referred to as follows by C . W.
Leadbeater in his book,“The Other Side o f
Death”
THE MAGIC AND OCCULTISM OF INDIA. 75
There was a time not many years ago when itwas fashionable to ridicule anyone who had hadthe good fortune to meet face to face an inhabitant o f the world usually unseen
,and though such
experiences were presumably no less common thenthan now, those who encountered them naturallykept them to themselves if they valued their reputatio n as sane members of a materialistlc society.
”
Within the last few years,however
,a salutary
change has come over public opinion in this respect . To sneer at psychic phenomena is now
recognized as showing not intellectual vigour butignorance and assumption . When there exists aSociety for Psychical Re search which numbersamong its members well-known scientists like SirWilliam Crookes and Sir Oliver Lodge
,and public
men like Mr. Arthur Balfour, and when that so
ciety issues huge volumes of learned reports uponsuch phenomena and considers them worthy o f
careful and prolonged investigation,it is no longer
safe for anyone who wishes to be in the fashionto raise the silly and antiquated parrot-cry o f
superstition .
’
“ Impartial enquiry into the subject o f apparitions shows us that from all countries o f the worldthere come well-attested accounts of the occasionalreturn of the dead . Such visitors have rarely
given much information with regard to the world
76 MYSTIC TEST BOOK, HINDU OCCULT CHAMBERS.
from which they came, though a good deal may be
inferred from collation and comparison of thevarious stories . But at any rate the mere factthat man does survive the process called death isproved for any fai r-minded investigator by theseaccounts alone .
As Mr . W. T . Stead remarks in the introductionto his “Real Ghost Stories ”
Of all the vulgar superstitions o f the halfeducated, none dies harder than the absurd delusion that there are no such things as ghosts . Allthe experts
,whether spiritual
,poetical
,or seien
tific, and all the others, non-experts, who havebestowed any serious attention upon the subject, know that they do exist . There is endless varietyof opinion as to what a ghost may be. But as tothe fact of its existence
,whatever it may be
,there
is no longer any serious dispute among honestInvestigators . If anyone questions this
,let him
investigate for himself. In six months, possibly
in six weeks,or even in six days
,he will find it
impossible to deny the reality of the existence ofthe phenomena popularly entitled ghostly. Hemay have a hundred ingenious explanations of theorigin and nature of the ghost, but as to the existence of the entity itself there will no longer beany doubt . ”
THE MAGIC AND OCCULTISM OF INDIA.
SPIRITUALISM .
Another way in which many travelers haveretu rned is through the use of the means providedby modern spiritualism. I am well aware thatthere has been much fraud and deception in thisconnection
,but I also know from personal investi
gatio n that there is truth to be found along theselines by the patient and indefatigable seeker .Unless specially trained in the higher clairvoy
ance, however, the enquirer is very much at themercy o f various masquerading entities
,and this
line of research is surrounded by pitfalls intowhich the unwary may very readily stumble . I
hope later to devote some pages to a careful analysis o f some o f the phenomena o f spi ritualism,
butfor the present my point is that here I s ano thersource from which information as to the life afterdeath i s to be obtained by those who are willingto take some trouble in lo oking fo r it.
”
It may be said that any value which spiritualistic testimony may possess is largely discountedby the fact that it is not always consistent— thatthe accounts given by spirits at various times andplaces have differed considerably. This is quitetrue
,and I am by no means suggesting that all
spirit evidence is equally worthy o f acceptance .
But I do say that in verym any cases the com

municating entity is telling the truth as far as heknows it
,and that the difference between the state
ments made by two such entities is often due to thefact that both of their views are partial
,and not to
any wilful deception practised by either of them .
”
“For example, most of those who speak throughmediums in England and America describe theafter-death state as a progressive life in a ‘summ erland,
’ which is in fact only a glorified reproduction o f the earth, and so far as they give anyreligious teaching it is always a kind of Chris

tianity-and-water—certainly wider and less rigidthan the orthodox idea
,though usually very much
vaguer, but still distinctly Christian in tone . One
gets so used to this that I remember it was quitea surprise to me when I attended my first s!ancein Ceylon to find that all the communicating entities
'
were Buddhists, and that beyond the grave
they also had found their religious preconceptionsconfirmed
,exactly as had the members o f various
Christian sects over here . But differences suchas these become easily comprehensible when weunderstand that after death
,as before
,like

religion or caste will keep together and remainapart from the rest of humanity in that world asin this . ”—The Other Side of Death, Leadbeater.

who is in an advanced state o f development andunderstanding of self-hood .
DEEPER SHADE OF BLUE shows religious fervour, but if there is a mixture o f brown or grey with itthere will be a good deal of selfishness and piousdeceit with the religion, and a good deal of narrowbigotry in the nature o f those who show thisAstral Color.
YELLOW o f a muddy,mustardy color will belong
to a person envious , jealous, whose disposition isunsatisfactory in his dealings , inconstant, oftendeceitful and a liar .
CLEAR PURE YELLOW indicates the highest ordero f intellectuality
,intuitional and generally spirit
uallydisposed .
ORANGE indicates a somewhat lower order o f intellectuality and a good deal o f success in comm ercial life .
A DEEP VIOLET BLUE a very high state of spirituality
—it is seldom seen, however, I regret tostate .
A CLEAR BRIGHT BLUE will indicate a conditiono f religious fervour

this it might quite possibly be unbearable to thosesurrounding the person, who will wait neither time

Where considerable pale blue Astral Aura is inevidence yo u get the man who is coldly intellectual, often scientific, generally piety and free from lustof passion. These people have a refining influenceon others and frequent places of art and culture

and refined music.
DARK YELLOW AURAS are always best avoided,
people with these arealways very jealous , enviousunscrupulous and deceitful . Bad for businessdealings
,and bad associates .
The CLEAR SHADES OF YELLOW indicate a veryhigh order of intellectuality
,and these people will
be o ut o f the common run, not at all frequentamongst your client

So with the VIOLET BLUE AURA,the man o r
woman who carries this has intense aspiration forspiritual things
,will never mix up with anything
degrading, gross or mean . Will be trustworthy, truthful and genuine . Good people to associateand do business with .
THE INFLUENCE OF THE ASTRAL COLORS ONOTHERS .
The influence upon others of the varying shadeso f the RED ASTRAL AURA thrown o ff by certainpeople is widely different .

BLUE and PALER VIOLET, with perhaps some muddyyellow o r green combined in it—here you have passion
,a certain degree o f intellectuality
,a desire
fo r spiritual things,but an underlying strata o f
deceit, selfishness and jealousy which will keep thesubject from any great advancement—a weakcharacter clearly.
Warn him of this if you feel it wise. Now there comes into your vision another faceand surrounding it you get clouds of red and black,o f brown even and flashes o f scarlet .You will see at once that it is necessary to warnyour client o f this man, who can be no friend tohim and only a bad influence .
THE BLACK AURA.
The influence of the BLACKAURA is lowering andbrings a depressing influence upon other people, and affects all those who may come in contactwith it .Its influence upon the person who creates it isvery bad
,it brings his life into chaos
,it keeps him
o n a low level,it creates gross imperfect conditions
which are difficult to overcome. Such people arealways in trouble, too , and seem to attract evil anddisaster.

CHAPTER VI .
SYMB OLS AND PLANETS .
I n your last lesson I stated that in addition tothe actual vision o f color perceived by your SpiritSight, there are times when the planets would beseen in connection with these colors .It must be borne in mind that to be a successful
Seer and Medium the world o f symbols must befully grasped
,and that for o ne person who can
see things as they actually occur in the AstralLight there are twenty who s ee the same thing insymbols . The exact vision is rare
,and even when
it is frequent, as in the instance I shall give youlater
,when the help of what are called elementals
are called forth—a practice I do no t for o ne instant advocate, and o ne which is seldom reliedupon—there are times when the revelation is no to f a nature to help o r elevate .
WHITE A ND BLACK MAGIC .
In the symbolic world, on the contrary, there isvery little of this , but the earnest student must
90 MYSTIC TEST BOOK. HINDU OCCULT CHAMBERS.
learn to distinguish between white and black
magic, and to remember that the subject of Spirit
and Astral Sight and Occult Powers covers a verywide area, and can be put to all sorts of uses, good, bad and indifferent .As in all else the planets must play an important part in our being
,and when the symbols
appear. in the vision, they carry with them a distinct and very important meaning.
SIGNS OF THE ZODIAC.
The signs o f the Zodiac are divided into fourgroups
,and these groups are known as triplicities,
earth, air, fire and water .And the atmospheric spirits , those namelessbeings which throng the very air we breathe, called“ elementals
,are also divided into four groups
governing the same elements .Clairvoyants
,Mediums and sensatives are in
particular open to the inroads of these m ischievous influences
,and must be warned against them .
The Earthy Triplicity is Taurus , Virgo andCapricorn.
The Triplicity is Aries , Leo and Saggittarins .The Water Triplicity is Cancer, Scorpio andPisces .When people come
’ to you clad in certain colors,
THE MAGIC AND OCCULTISM OF INDIA. 91
o r yo u find these colors predominating in theirhome, dress , etc .
, then you can place them underthe Triplicities to which they belong
,and you can
tell them what elementals they must avoid .
Those people who belong mostly to the airytriplicity will have a love for blue
,red and black.
The fiery triplicity gives off White, red
,yellow and
green . The watery gives brown, green
,white ; and
the earthy gives black,brown
,white and yellow.
I do not say that these colors will be found tobe by themselves
,but they will surely predominate .
It is taught by Hindu Seers that Where the fourelementals , earth, air, fire and water, prevail therewill be found certain corresponding spheres governed by spirits o f the planets and these elem entals bear names according to the substanceover which they rule
,and the elementals which
they obey their dictates .
In the Sanscrit they are known as followsThus Akasha is inspired by the good I ndra andsignifies the mother ether . Fire by A gni—air byPavano —water by Varuna— earth by Kshiti .
It is taught that under each of these exalted intelligences there are seven orders , and under them
yet again seven orders and so o n ad infinitumthrough the cosmos into chaos .The ancient Initiated o r Cabbalists divide theelementals thus :
92 MYSTIC TEST BOOK, HINDU OCCULT CHAMBERS.
Fire,Salamanders .
Air,Sylphs .
Water,Undines .
Earth,Gnomes .
They Simply swarm in the elemental they represent, and they attend each individual accordingto their ofi ce, and strength in that individual
’S
psychic,other than material, composition.
A man or woman is spiritual o r material, not somuch according to their fleshy standard, as thestandard of their soul . When these elementalsare in a peaceable frame of mind they do very littleharm
,or indeed none
,and often good . But when
they are disturbed o r in a malevolent frame ofmind
,they are like swiftly moving flames o r atoms
swishing through their elemental under immensedynamic pressure .
These infuriated elementals when they come incontact with human beings work havoc with theirvictims
,causing disease, disaster and all sorts of
trouble, so that when I ask my pupils no t to sitlate at night gazing at their Crystals or a BlackMirror, I am really warning them against theundue influences likely to attack them in the formof malevolent elementals .
These spirits of the sub-human kingdom aregoverned by natural law and also by human will
,
they can be controlled by those who are their
94 MYSTIC TEST BOOK, HINDU OCCULT CHAMBERS .
to communicate with some dear ones who havepassed out of the body. To do this they either trycrystal gazing or go to a Spiritualistic medium
,
yet half the time the results are but the pranksand games on the part of the elementals whichswarm in the atmosphere . Hence the Clairvoyantor Medium must not sit for development at a timewhen these spirits have most power
,viz .
,at late
hours in the evening and in the very earlyhours ofthe morning. The best time to sit fo r developmentis certainly from eight to nine o ’clock in the evening. Sit in a dark room and concentrate all yourthought upon the person youwant to see
,at first
you will obtain little result beyond clouds of color,
and perhaps many varying forms, not the one you
seek, all the room will seem to be full of light and
people, then take ful l deep breaths as directed in
the last chapter and at last the desired form willappear .
The great thing is to avoid promiscuous influences , and another thing is to sit alone if possible, and certainly not with more than o ne person in theroom—remember that law and will power areexpressions of the universal spirit, and that will, law,
and the perfect self-balance taught by the lesson “Control Thyself” all tend to establish a po sitive mental attitude which is quite able to avoidthe troubles threatened by elementals . When the
THE MAGIC A ND OCCULTISM o r INDIA. 95
Seer is in a weak and negative state of mind, theylay themselves open to be obsessed by elementals
,
and for this reason a trance Clairvoyant is oftenthe victim of promiscuous control and misleadingresults—and this also very o ften leads to insanityand death.
I do not advocate trance Clairvoyance,it is dan
gerons and seldom reliable, but as these chapters
would not be complete without a few words o n
the subject of self-hypnotism I will proceed todescribe what I have found to be the best method .
Hindu Masters and Seers are able to induce thestate of introspection with a slight effort o f theirwill
,but the neopyte will find this an impossibility
until he learns to have faith .
Let the pupil sit facing the East,in a chair o f
wood, with a comfortable footstool. Then fix the
gaze steadily upon a Magic Mirror and draw thirtylong deep breaths . After a short time the eyeswill grow weary, close , and the Seer falls into astate of coma
,or Self-induced trance
,and is then
able to exercise the inner or Spiritual Sight . Theremust always be somebody in the room to take downall that is said
,of course the person for whom
you are in a trance will do very well,it is not nec
essary to have a third person . Give strict ordersthat no one is to arouse you , but make a suggestionto yourself as you enter the trance
,that you will

awake after a certain length o f time. The processI have described above is a genuine trance, butthree-parts of the so -called trance mediums arenot in a trance at all but merely induce a state ofgreat excitement by deep breathing
,etc .
,and in
that state they are often less reliable than when incomplete hypnosis .I can only repeat do not attempt trancemediumship unless yo u are an adept and absolutemaster o f yourself, otherwise you will only layyourself open to trouble.

signs according to the triplicity to which theybelong may be attached the warning necessaryagainst the elemental familiar to the sign . Whenattended by favorable colors the elementals willbe friendly, thus Aries, Leo or S agittarius at
tended with victorious colors means that the elem entals are friendly and that fire will help nothinder . And so with the others . The subject matter o f this chapter must be committed to memory.

The disciple who prefers to use a Magic Mirrorto the Crystal can

and to most people will prove a much more valuable medium for clear seeing than the ordinaryCrystal
,and moreover it is not so tiring to the
eyes . However, using the Crystal occasionally isgood fo r continuous development of Spirit Sight .The first requisites are the necessary materials

You must not fail to mark the poles of the Mirrorso that you can always keep them right and leftand this is a most important matter as they mustnot be mistaken . The right pole will be the end ofthe glass nearest the right hand. When you havemagnetised the Mirror you will place it in thedryingbox and leave it for seven days, when theprocess must be again repeated as on the first o ccasion
,in fact , it is repeated three times, an in

,thus it takes three weeks to complete .
On each occasion you must carefully wash thebrushes and the saucers
,and place the Mirror
where there will be no prying eyes to see it and nounholy hands to touch it .This Mirror is the same as those ! used by theancient magicians and the Hindu Seers and is amuch more powerful instrument than you can buyready made . but not of the world .
Then again, the fact that the ancient adepts

If you desire to develop you Spirit o r Soul Sightso you can look into the future

By means of various proceedings the personthus to be cursed is impregnated with the thoughto f the operator whether he be in or out o f thebody, and where this is very concentrated, it willbear seeds in weak and unorganized soil .Sometimes the ancient Black magicians wouldmould a wax image o f the victim and stick pinsinto it and curse it daily

ORIENTAL MAGIC .
The method o f influence used to large extentby Oriental women is , if no t quite so potent asa magnetised charm, very much easier to carryinto execution.
If any apology is needed for giving such instructio ns, I m ay say that all my sympathies arewith true love all the world over, and that to thosewho love legitimately and who fail, by reason o fthe interference of some other person or for somereason to get on with the subject of their love
,I
consider that any means are right to bring aboutsuch an end as may be desired, and to this purposethe teachings of the Rosicrucians

they may not have so much power as the Orientals ,for the former are brought up in an atmosphereo f mystery and occultism, and the latter aremostly prosaic and material . But the true Clairvoyant is very seldom Saxon
,there is generally a
strain of either .Celtic or Latin blood to accountfor
"
the Seer ’s power, albeit it is said that a purevirgin or a spotless boy can always see clearlywhen they are tested, but of this I have my doubts ,for ‘this is a power that must be cultivated anddeveloped .
But o ne thing is very sure, and that is that themagnetic Clairvoyance can be more easily and assurely utilized as the more expensive and costlyprocesses in use amongst Orientalists . To ascendto more ethereal and spiritual uses for clear visionwe come to the all important question of theesoteric meanings of color and numbers

here be it understood that I am not in any wayreferring to the meanings

OCCULT SYMBOLS A ND THEIR TRUE MEANING.
In this chapter it is necessary to bear in mindthat a great many people see clairvoyantly notin actual vision, but by means of symbols , andthat these symbols again are often Shrouded incolor which adds a new meaning to them, I amgiving these meanings also .

black clouds or a skull and cross bones appear onthe sails

A woman naked,standing under a bright light

signifies maternity, but an empty cradle would
signify that hopes in this line are doomed to bedisappointed .

In the question of inspirational writing it isvery much the s ame thing
,do not mix inspiration
with spirit control, they are quite different things
make your mind blank as in the case of abovepractice, and then take a pencil in your hand andsit down quietly and wait
,write anything that
comes to you—do not mind what drivel it is,but
just persevere and in the course of a few dayspossibly

you are no longer writing drivel, but things whichwill surprise yourself and which you may havebeen unaware of knowing even dimly.
In the development of Clair-audience,you will
find the same methods apply. Sit down alone andin silence
,still your mind and thoughts and listen
with all your attention and you will in time hearthat which mortal ears hear not as a rule .
For Telepathy,however
,I have small patience
with the usual card reading methods of to-day.
The first essential is a partner who is in sympathywith you and to whom yo u can turn for experi

Then yo u can proceed to send him more distinctive messages , make him bring you some artiele you want, some book o r paper
,after a time
he will do this easily too, then yo u can try sending
him short sentences and arrange with him that hewill take them down, it is astonishing in how shorta time you can communicate and that over any distance

not know o f any authenticated instance of thisbeing done where there was a lack o f sympathy between the experimenters .I have made some wonderful experiments alongthese lines myself
,and had most interesting re

CHAPTER XII .
OCCULT MEANING OF SPIRIT LIGHTS,VISIONS
,
DREAM S,SIGNS A ND WARNINGS .
OCCULT LIGHTS .—I will now explain to you the
correct meaning of the different colored occultlights
,which will appear to you from time to time
during and after your development in Clairvoyance or Spirit Sight .Should you be sitting at the table
,or in the
presence of anyone,or should you be holding a
private or public entertainment, better known to
all Mediums as a spiritual seance, and the differ
ent lights appear, the meaning is as follows
RED OCCULT LIGHT.
SHOULD THE RED LIGHT APPEAR, it denotes thatthe spirit is an Indian who is trying to revealsomething to you. If the light changes from a
deep red to a light red it denotes that this Indianis your guide . If it appears over a person towhom you are addressing
,tell them there is money
buried or hidden near where they reside, and the

spirit is trying to reveal it to them,o r tell them,
if you are impressed to do so,there is a secret
surrounding them, o r some o ne they are interested
in,and this secret will soon be discovered . If the
light raises toward the ceiling and falls quickly totheflo o r, we then advise you to follow the lightwith the mind ’s eye
,as it will lead you to the
place of location, matters not if it is money, or
something else of importance . The spirit'
I ndian
always makes hi s first appearance,by showing yo u
a red light .
GREEN LIGHT .—I f a green light appears to yo u
while you are alone it denotes that Some personis using you with deceit, this will be given to youby your guide for your own individual self. Butif the light appears over a person to whom youare addressing tell them that some one is usingthem with deceit and for them to be careful o ffalse friends
,and new acquaintances .
BLUE LIGHT—The blue light means the presenceo f a high and fully developed spirit
,and only ap
pears when there are great blessings and agreeable surprises coming. The moment you see this
light you will feel most happy, and you should al
ways act upon your first impressions after thisVI SI OI I appears .
132 MYSTI C TEST BOOK, HINDU OCCULT CHAMBERS.
YELLOW LIGHT .
-Should you be sitting with aperson and a yellow light appears at their feet
,
tell them to be careful of a near future illness
(Fever ) . If it appears over their head, tell themthere is some one in their family who is sufferingand there are grave hopes for their recovery.
LAMP LIGHT .— I n case you are Sitting talking to
a person,and you see a lamp appear before yo u ,
burning, and it suddenly goes o ut, it denotes thata member of
”
the family will pass away within ayear. If the lamp remains burning and the second lamp appears also burning it denotes a marriage in the immediate family. This vision is alsoused when persons ask you a question pertainingto marriage ; for instance, if some one asks you ifa marriage will take place
,wait for a minute
,and
if the vision appears according to the explanationo f the two lamps you can tell them positively yes .
PURPLE LIGHT .
—Signifies the presence of theethereal forces which is the highest and most powerful spirits , who only appear at certain times ,but whenever it appears it denotes brightness
,ele
vation,happiness and prosperity
,especially for
yourself and the one to whom you are addressing.
It matters not what you see, every object has agreat significance
,and your spirit guides will ex

and lead you in the light of many wonderfulthings . I want yo u to continue in this manneruntil you can master these instructions I have sofar given you . Always allow yourself to firmlybelieve every thought or impression passingthrough your mind whilst sitting (for either yourself or some one who has employed you ) , is thespirit talking to you . Never forget your dutytoward those souls out of the body, called spirits,as they assist yo u many times .
VISION OF FLOWERS .
THE VISION o r FLOWERS—When reading for aperson
,or if for yourself, and the vision of flowers
appear, their meaning is as follows : Fennel
Flower,worthy o f all praise ; White Rose, ele
gance ; Balm,sympathy ; B endal Rose, happy love ;
Buttercup, ingratitude ; Deep Red Carnation, true
love ; Chrysanthemum,cheerfulness ; China Aster,

saken ; Tree Foil, revengeful ; Yellow Lily, deceitand falsehood ; Heliotrope , faithful , honest, frankness
,determination and generosity.
If strict attention is paid to this lesson it willenable the Disciple to read the full and true disposition o f persons by the vision of flowers .In this lesson I have given you the true spiritomen of flowers .
WHEN READING CLAIRVOYANTLY,do not say to a
person,“I see a flower
,and it is a rose ;
”o r do
no t say,“I see a bird,
”o r an object of any kind,
as it would sound entirely o ut of place to thoseno t familiar with the laws o f Clairvoyance . A l
ways speak o f the meaning. For instance , you arereading the life of a lady or a gentleman
,and you
Should see the Fennel Flower appear ; or, youshould see also the Yellow Lily
,the Willow and
the Lilac, speak thusly “You are worthy o f all
praise, but at times yo u feel forsaken ; you place
to o much confidence in those who are only using
yo u with deceit, and also telling falsehoods about
yo u , etc .
No doubt yo u will think these visions very Simple
,but I will say even so , they are direct from
the spirit guides , and they are showing you thesewonderful visions , and are attempting to have yo uunderstand their meaning.

You will have from time to time many visions,
and I could speak of many more ; but for the wanto f space I am obliged to omit many of them ; butI have given you what I think is most needed foryour future development. The spirits will Showyou many things as you grow stronger, and at thesame time they will impress you as to the meaningo f what they do show you .
THE VISION OF BIRDS,BEASTS A ND OB JECTS .
SPIRITUAL MEANING OF BIRDS,BEASTS
,FORMS ,
ETC .
—Should you be sitting, and see a white doveappear at the table, or otherwise, it denotes a goodmessage from afar o ff. Should the dove seemingly go away, and then appear with o ne wingblack, it denotes a message of illness from a nearfriend . If the wing is tipped with a white edge,it denotes illness of a near relative . In case thedove dematerializes, and then quick returns withboth wings black, it denotes a death o f a nearconnection.
THE BIRD o r WISDOM .-The Owl -is known as the
spirit bird of wisdom, and when it appears beforeyou holding in its mouth a letter, the message isas follows : The one to whom you are addressingis involved in business matters , and is seriouslycontemplating a change . Then tell them they willmake a change in business which will prove for

PEACOCK.
—Should you be sitting,or otherwise
,
and Chance to see a peacock appear behind a person, it denotes that person is full of vanity, andif you will only try you can flatter them to such anextent that they will worship you . This is a visionI seldom care to see, for when it appears it generally leads to you discovering many unpleasantthings pertaining to the person to whom it appears . They are not only full of vanity
,but they
are generally deceitful and dishonest ; but you canread for them as you are impressed .
THE VISION OF A RAINB OW .—Sl10uld you be sit
ting with a person,and you see the vision o f a
rainbow appear over them, read as follows “My
dear friend,I see that you are terribly worried
over domestic troubles, but you can cheer up ; all
troubles will soon vanish, and your heart will be
changed from sadness to perfect happiness, and
opportunities will soon present themselves favorably for you to gain that which you are now
grasping for ; go o u— all will be well .”
A VISION OF A SEA GULL .
—When you see a seagull appear
,seemingly in the far distance, it de
notes that the person to whom you are addressinghas a dear friend across the ocean, and that thereis a message of brightness coming to them . This
is a most beautiful vision, and to watch the gull

yo u will see that it performs all kinds of movements as it comes nearer to the person .
PRISON BARS—When appearing directly in backo f a person it denotes legal confinement. Whenappearing directly in front of a person it denotesanticipated crime . When appearing to the left o fa person it denotes a male relative will be confinedin prison ; if to the right, it will be that of a female .
VISION o r FIRE—This has two distinct meanings . First
,anger ; second, destruction ; but we
advise the Medium to speak of this according toimpressions , as you will find
,as yo u grow
stronger, that when fire appears many other vis
ions are bound to follow.
While writing the last paragraph we are advised by our guide to inform you that the visiono f fire also denotes buried money
,valuable papers ,
etc.,but only I n such cases where it appears be
fore you o ut in the open air (wood, fields o r plain ) .Many times an Occult ball of fire will appear be
fore you,and continue to follow you like a shadow .
Whenever this occurs I would advise you to paystrict attention to this
,as many times it will lead
yo u to the very spot where the spirit wishes youto go . I have seen a ball of fire appear about thesize of an ordinary apple
,and lower itself down to
the earth, and remain for several minutes . When
140 MYSTIC TEST BOOK, HINDU OCCULT CHAMBERS,
such occurs it is then positive evidence of valuables being at the exact spot or that a crime hasbeen committed there.
VISION o r SNAKES—The vision of snakes in allcases and upon all occasions positively denotesevil and meanness of every description . Whenappearing around yourself beware of all personsfor some time to come ; that is to say, of those ofwhom you think are not your friends and alsowatch those who pretend to be your friends . Whenappearing in the lap
,around the neck or waist o f
those you are addressing,do not trust them out of
your sight, for they are o f -evil and will do evil
to their best friend. Should the snake appearupon the floor
,or seemingly creeping toward the
person, tell them to be aware of all enemies and
evil-doers , but rem ember the persons to whom a
snake appears are generally o f evil character.
But when you are reading, and see a snake ap
pear near the person,do not tell them they are
evil,as I do not approve of telling people of the1r
evil ; always tell them of the good that they possess
,if any
,and I advise you to read as follows
“ I see there are evil influences around yo u , and itis advisable for you to change from such as soonas you possibly can
,o r it will prove greatly to
your disadvantage .

denotes that which is hoped for will be lost, and
you should tell the person that they will be disappointed in whatever they have on their mind
,at
the time when calling to see you.
THE VISION o r A SWORD denotes that the personis halting between two opm i o ns ; they do not knowwhat course to pursue . Then
,if you see the sword
wave in the air and point north,it denotes success
fo r the person, and they Should act upon theirfirst proposition . If the sword appears in twoparts it denotes law suit and losses . To get morelight upon this subject
,kindly request your spirit
guide to give you further impressions . Thenspeak accordingly.
THE VISION OF AN EAR OF CORN .—Should you be
sitting with a person and you Should see an ear ofcorn appear before them, and the ear is full o fwell-formed, healthy corn, tell them they will soonmeet with wonderful success, and the comingevents of their life will be absolutely successful .It positively signifies full and plenty. In order toascertain if a person has money, ask your Spiritguide the ques tion, and you will see them bring
you an ear of full corn. If the ear appears to bescant

come . If two ears of corn appear, it denotes poverty at present, but success will soon follow,
andthe person will gain greater wealth and happiness .Again
,I will say to you, pay strict attention to
all visions that appear before yo u and all dreamsand all impressions that are given to you
,even
though you may think this very simple ; but allowme to state that spirits do Show these things andgive secret information and warnings in dreamsand visions
,which you will do well to study and
try and understand . You might think to yourself,o r ask,
“Why do the Spirits not show or tell usjust what all these things mean
,without showing
so many strange visions ?” Well, it is their ways ,and we must abide by their laws . If yo u remember reading when “Jesus , the Master,
” appearedto His disciples , He spoke to them in parables .We might say,
“Why did Jesus speak parabolically to His followers ?
” But we know such wasthe case with Jesus
,and such is the case with
spirits . You have no right to question thesethings
,and it is utterly impossible to be misled
if yo u will study and attempt to properly interpretand understand those signs that are given fromspirit life.

PROJECTION OF ASTRAL MESSAGES .
In dealing with the question of Telepathic communication , I am not only giving you the best Iknow and practical development, but I am alsogiving yo u knowledge concerning my greatesthobby—a hobby I have no t taught others before, and in which I have conducted some very remarkable experiments .
Telepathy is the central factor in every phaseo f Psychical Research . In common with all physicdevelopment the faculty of thought reading andthought communication requires certain conditions
,and a degree of patient experiment .
It is more easilydeveloped in its simplest formsthan Clairvoyance o r any other method of research
,and in its more intricate and advanced
stages it can be brought to such a pitch of perfection that communication can be established be

These rules are arbitrary ; so much dependsupon the instruments used
,and those who wish
to develop the faculty Should choose their partners according to the scale—this is

” The message has been accurately transmitted . How ?The student asks naturally enough .
If my friend is in Chicago and I am in Madras,

The samemedium which enables Light and Sound to travelthe Ether.People who are not given to thinking do nottrouble themselves with any conjecture as to whatexists beyond the atmosphere which circles theearth. In Simple words , the Ether is a substancewhich fills all space—I nfinity. Science has provedto us that every conceivable object, from thought, the physical body of man, the air we breathe, thewater we drink, down to the grains of sand uponthe seashore
,are composed of billions and billions
o f tiny atoms .The Ether is not composed of atoms—it is asmooth substance
,filling all space ; it does not
cause any friction to bodies or particles movingthrough it
,and it is not subject to the laws of
gravitation. It has been described as a “ jellylike substance

those trivial experiments, the purer your body and

anger, envy and all uncharitableness . All these
things cloud your mental or spiritual atmosphere,
and prevent the sending or receiving of telepathicmessages .So far as ordinaryMind
-reading is concernedtwo people are needed to carry out the experi

,who acts as operator,
stands behind the Telepathist and curves thefingers round so that both hands are poised overthe temples

by anybody . After a few seconds the Telepathistwill sway from side to side
,as if uncertain where
to go,then will suddenly make a start and go
straight o fi towards the pin— the Operator willno t touch the Telepathist but simply guard againstfalls .After a week or two of practice
,a sensitive per

Although this experiment is trivial and not new,
it is excellent training for those who desire toopen up these channels o f silent communication, sharpens their senses and teaches their mindconcentration .

In telepathic experiments with cards you canpass over the simple tests common with ordinaryMind Readers . For instance
,the audience may

,the operator remaining as

CHAPTER XIV;
TELEPATHIC COMMUNICATIONS .
In the previous chapter I Showed you a Simplemethod of demonstration in the most common andconventional forms of Tho ught Transference, methods and experim ents which are to me uninteresting but which go a long way to convincesceptics .For all experiments passing those cited in thelast chapter certain conditions must be fulfilled.
Remember,first of all
,that the mental receiver
,
the brain,is a very sensitive instrument. Science
boasts of the delicacy of instruments which canmeasure light waves , sound waves, color waves, which can investigate the nature, size and atmos
phere of planets billions of mi les distant . Sciencehas yet to invent the instrument which can recordtho ught, but Nature herself has provided the instrument in the brain of another. Except inunusual circumstances
,this brain receiver will
only record thought with accuracy when the nervous system of the person is tranqui l, and so recep

tive, when it is not engaged actively in any mental
work of an opposite nature and when the surroundings are not of a character to distract themind . Therefore, repose and quiet are essential.Of course
,there are instances
,startling instances ,
too,o f a telepathic communication having been
received in the midst of turmoil, but I am dealing
with the question of experiment, o f pre-arrangedsittings
,not of sudden warnings
,etc .
It is best to commence at close quarters .Two kindred souls
,the one positive, the other
negative, may sit in the same room, later on inthe . same house but different rooms , finally indifferent rooms in different parts of the sametown, and gradually increasing the distance astime goes and easy communication is possible . Tomake these experiments a real success
,the mode
o f life and diet must be of the most simple nature. As little excitement as possible
,absolute cleanli
ness, and a clean room . Let the person who acts
as receiver sit down in a comfortable chair andfree his mind from thought . This is no t easy
,but
if the student will for a few days before startingexperiments sit down quietly for an hour daily, and let his mind run down
,i . e. ,
let it run downuntil he has thought up all his thoughts
,then
gradually it will be less difficult to think o f
nothing.

.I n fact, many o f my students have found that
theb est way to m ake the m ind blank o r to co neen
trate it upon any single po int is to sit down withthe idea that the mind is free to think upon anysubject it pleases—and this very permission seemsto stop any desire for mind wandering.
This little rule will apply both to operator andreceiver .
Both students can sit, but, whilst'
the receivermakes his brain blank
,thinking of nothing
,ready
to take any impression which may be sent to him,
the operato r fixes his whole mind upon the message he wants to convey. It is best to begin withaction .
Think steadily that the receiver will get up ,walk to the window
,and pull down the blind
,or
anything else that may occur to you . The secreto f doing this successfully i s n o t to think—“youwill get up
,walk to the window and pull down the

to begin with—your receiver must make his mindblank as before . Think intently of a book—not aword
,but the picture of it— ask your receiver to
give the impression he receives . He may hesitatea moment, then he says ,
“It is something oblong-it is—it is a book.
” Go on thinking clearly ofo ne object at a time , making the picture as sharpand vivid as possible . You will need to do thisat close quarters to commence with if you like
,you
may even hold the receiver ’s hand, though I do
not recommend this . One thing I must urgecarry your hobby into everything you do, try itseffect upon everything and everybody
,whatever
you think of,even in the sma ll duties of life ; get
into the habit of making these mental pictures ofall you do and of all you see or have seen . Comingto the questions of long distances and communications
,slightly different methods are called for.
It is best for beginners to arrange a sitting at afew streets distance . The operator will then , asbefore, close his eyes and call forth a vivid mentalpicture o f the receiver . Then, still holding thepicture before him,
he must call aloud the nameof the receiver—“John Smith , John Smith , do
you hear me - I am going to write you a letter. ”
THE MAGIC AND OCCULTISM OF INDIA. 159
Repeat the sentence two or three times, making
the voice clear and distinct . Of course yo u canuse any Simple sentences
,but let there be only one
idea .
Naturally as you grow proficient you can leavethe A B C . and learn to transmit and receive wholesentences as easily as possible . But you mustbecome perfect by degrees . Before you can playthe piano you must learn your notes .The idea of calling the name and sentence aloudis to help co ncentra te the will, and to increasethe power of the vibrations by this additionalconcentration .
The methods given in this lesson may be the’
royal ro ad, if there is such a thing as a royal roadto any matter of psychic import ; at any rate, bypracticing them carefully you will gain a practicalinsight into the wonderful power of Thought
,and
realize that the o ld theories are dead and thatThought is very far from being confined to eachindividual brain-pan

that it can travel the world round, and over a

CHAPTER XV.
To CONTROL THE MENTAL VISION .
We have been concerned in the transmission o fsimple words and impressions so far
,but now it
comes to the question o f transmitting Whole sentenoes, which is more difficult, but worked o n
exactly the same principles . First, analyze your
sentence, let it be as direct as possible I n your ownmind ; let it have some definite point .Sit quietly as before, close your eyes, and as apreliminary
,call up the face and figure o f your
comrade ; have it very clearly before yo u ,and
then, when fixed, speak loud to the image you have
called up . Not only speak the words, but have a
clear and concentrated conception of their meaning. Take a simple sentence at first with adefinite object . It is just as well
,to o , to take a
sentence that will not be anticipated by thereceiver.Try this experiment
,if you like, for instance
I am holding a red or white flower in my hand.
Say this aloud,and
,having arranged with your
co -worker as to time, etc . , be sure that he is waiting for your message to come through . Now drop
162 MYSTIC TEST BOOK, HINDU OCCULT CHAMBERS.
When I say this I mean it is not easy to impresssimulated feelings upon the receiver ; when thefeelings are real, it is easy enough . All the same
,
try to transmit feelings o f joy,love
,fear and
anger ; it will help you to concentrate your Willand increase its power . In this instance you arenot trying to send a sentence to your receiver
,
being unprepared, may be a little startled . So,
during the experiments,it is as well to warn him
not to be astonished at any feeling or impressionthat may come to him .
These experiments come under the heading o f
pre—arranged messages , that is to say, both of theexperimenters sitting at a pre-arranged time anddevoting their thoughts to the transference ofThought .Words
,sentences
,figures , etc . , may be sent in
this way from any distance as experiments o r
tests, but of course the time when perfect com
munication is fully established is much more interesting than mere tests or experiments . A thingI have done successfully with any number o f
people is to make them come to me by telepathiccommand if I have wanted them for anything.
This without pre-arrangement at all .Cover your eyes
,call forth the image o f the
say aloud,
“John Smith (or whatever his nameperson you wish for, then looking into his eyes
THE MAGIC AND OCCULTISM OF INDIA. 163
may be I want you —come to me ; do' you hear ?
Say it over three o r four times and picture yourfriend leaving his house o r office, boarding bus ortrain
,walking o r riding to your house . Follow
him out every step o f the journey, and in the
shortest possible time he will turn up,impelled by
what force he may no t know, yet be unable toresist it .A certain amount o f sympathy between theoperator and the person thus conjured up is necessary
,but not by any means the same sympathetic
relationship which is needed fo r the experimentspreviously cited.
The difficulty o f calling up the m ental imageis one that practice will render perfect . Somepeople can do this naturally, others find it difficult. To help you
,take a look at a face
,any face
,
close your eyes and still try to see it ; rememberhow the eyes
,nose and mouth are formed
,the
contour o f the face, coloring. Take another peep
at the person, close your eyes and go over it
again.
In the same way with scenery, houses
,animals
,
you will be astonished how soon you gain controlover this mental vision , and by closing your eyesat any time
,you can see accurately any thing or
person you want to . Y ou will notice that in the
164 MYSTIC TEST BOOK, HINDU OCCULT CHAMBERS.
above experiment it is unnecessary to know whatyour receiver is doing or where he is .You want him, you send your message ; it fliesstraight to its destination, and, drawn by the forceof your thought, he comes to you . You will findwith a little practice that quite 50 per cent of thepeople you know will obey the mental commandand a possible 75 per cent will feel it whether theyobey or not .As a more striking experiment you may command the “ receiver” to bring you some specifiedobject
,say a daily paper
,a certain book
,some
flowers .Call his name
,call up his mental image ; tell him,
I want you to bring me the Tim es,
” or any otherpaper you fix on . Repetitions of this experimentwill soon prove its remarkable truth . You willfind as a rule
,however
,that the people who will
bring any specified object ordered will be more insympathy with you than those who come but donot answer to the command to bring something.
I have had the most striking instances of thetruth of these experiments . Of course they are
carried o ut b etter where the people are in thesame town . For naturally with a train journeybetween
,people think twice before obeying the
thought message they receive bidding them takethe journey
,unless it came in the form of a dis

CHAPTER XVI.
PROJECTING THE ASTRAL .
The question of projecting the “ astral” is asubject o f the greatest fascinatI On to most people. Many people openly
‘
s tigmatize it as ro t” ;
others allow that there may be something in it ;others , yet again, know that it is a possibility. Nopre-arrangement is necessary at all with the persons you are going to send your “ astral self” tovisit
,unless that person is of very nervous tem
peram ent, when a hint may be given of what iscoming. A clear understanding of what constitutes
“ the astral self” may help my students .I am not trying to put this description intotechnical language
,but only to make it as Simple
and plain as can be.The physical body o f each person is composed
o f gross matter vibrating at a very low rate.I have previously explained that all things innature are in a state o f constant movement, knownby scientists as “vibration.
”
Within this physical body dwells the Soul bodycall this Soul o r Spiritual body
THE MAGIC A ND OCCULTISM OF IND IA. 167
Spirit ” of a departed person ( irrelevant peoplecall it a spook” ) it is really the finer vibrationso f the body, the Soul itself. These finer and purer vibrations of the humanform take on the exact representation of the physical body ; to all appearance it is the physical body, but greatly etheralized.
When an ordinary person goes to sleep thisastral form floats lightly above his body
,never
leaving it for long, no r for any great distance, andin the undeveloped person this form takes butlittle shape. When the Mind and Spirit are developed, the senses conquered, thought and bodypure, this astral form takes o n a definite shape, can leave the body entirely for hours
,travel in the
astral or physical world, as he pleases , to any landor any distance .
This cannot be done successfully until man hasmastered the animal side o f his nature .
It is possible to send this astral form to visitpeople or places at Will. It is very fatiguing andan experiment not to be attempted by the undeveloped person .
To commence with , try experiments in yournatural Sleep— suggest strongly to yourself, asyou fall o ff to sleep , that yo u will remember when
you wake .
When yo u can obey this suggestion and when
168 MY STI C TEST BOOK, HINDU OCCULT CHAMBERS.
yo u can rem ember, then, and not till then, haveyou arrived at a condition suitable fo r projectingthe “ astral. ”
Choose a very qu1et place where you cannotbe disturbed . Sit o r lie down , close your eyelids
,and roll the balls up as if you were trymg to
look between the eyebrows ; in a very few minutesyour eyes will grow tired and Sleep steal upon you .
Do not trouble to think of the sleep .
Remember the who le effo rt of yo ur will is to bedirected upo n yo ur astral self—you desire thisSelf to visit a certain place or person—as you fallo ff to sleep all yo ur fo rce directs the
“ astral” toits destination . I can assure yo u that it will do so .
Your friend will look up and see you standingbeside him looking perfectly natural .The “ astral self” will in advanced stages speaktouch him
,remain with him for some time even .
All this sounds like a fairy story to the unitiated
,but it I s often done . The only drawback is
the fact that the person who projects the astral inthis fashion suffers from terrible fatigue
,and the
student who is content to work and travel duringSleep does not feel such fatigue .
The sensation of leaving the body is curious ;one rises slowly in the atmosphere
,feeling
strangely light and free, and the sight of the heavySleeping body, lying unconscious beneath o ne
, is

ing a patient telepathically it is best to proceedas follows : Sit down and call up the mental imageo f your patient . See him lying down and mentallytake your seat beside him. Now commence treatment by saying aloud, if it helps you,
“Y o u arequite well
,you are in perfect health; life and
health perm eate yo ur body. You are gettingstronger, you grow tired and weary, you are goingto sleep , sound sleep ; you will awake feeling perfectlywell and quite refreshed.
”
Do not picture the‘
person as sick and in pain,
but in perfect health, able to m ove with ease, bright, cheery, full of vitalityYou must absolutely force yourself to ignore hisreal condition, for he will not take up your thoughtat all if there is any hesitation or doubt in yourmind when you send it . The patient is susceptibleto every feeling and thought you allow yourself tomanifest, so be careful to avoid anything whichmay harm him .
We all know that health is often restored bysudden joy
,caused by sudden trouble ; a great
many o f the diseases man is liable to are o f mentalorigin
,nervous troubles , and are curable by simi
lar treatment . The positive thought of healthtelepathed to the patient takes root

CHAPTER XVII .
TELEPATHIC APPARATUS .
In concluding these chapters in Telepathy I amgoing to give you an apparatus which I have foundsingularly helpful in some cases where extremesensitiveness was not the strong point of the “ receiver” and only blurred and imperfect messagescould be got through . Any worker in metals couldmake the apparatus and the cost is only a fewShillings . A very thin band of copper
,about half
an inch in width, should be made to fit round thehead . At the two Sides of the band let two copperwires be fixed in such a position that they canjoin the band on either Side of the temples ; theband itself should reach just above the eyebrowsand fit tightly.
The wires may each be o f two o r even threeyards long or more .
Many people find the contact of pure coppervery disagreeable, even producing a taste in themouth ; to neutralize this a roll of silver wireshould be procured and wound, not too tightly o r
closely, round the copper wire but not round the
band, this must always be of plain copper, unless

the trained receiver, who , taking the Copper endsin his hand will, after a moment o r so, be able toread accurately the message sent by the operator. The explanation is simple enough
,the man who
is untrained receives the messages as clearly asthe trained sensitive ; that is to say, they areclearly impressed upon his sub-conscious mind
,but
he does not comprehend them at all. A telegraphist can read the Morse message with ease, the manin the street only hears the tiresome tick— tickingo f the instrument. So the messages impressedupon the brain of the non-sensitive is as clear asdaylight to the sensitive.Remember that it is not o ur eyes that see, no rphysical ears that hear ; it is the delicate mechanism o f the brain behind them which
,illuminated
by the living spirit,
'
receives the impressions o f
sight and sound, and through which the receiving
instrument of the m ind transmits its messages tothe organs . The dead have eyes and ears
,yet
they neither see nor hear ; the organs are there, but the living spirit of the brain
,the s oul of the
man,has gone.
The consideration of telepathy under hypnosisis o ne which many students will be glad toinvestigate .
There is not any difficulty about it,but expe
ricuce will co nvince many sceptics . Put the “re

ceiver into a fairly deep condition of hypnosisby any of the methods I have explained in “Prac
tical Hypnotism,
” then let your sceptic approachthe receiver and start his experiment .Of course it is necessary that the person underhypnosis should be trained sensitive ; some peoplecan never do
‘
much in telepathy because they are ofthe earth, earthy, and incapable o f receiving anyother vibration at all .The sceptic may then either give the receiveran article, such as his watch, a letter or glove tohold, or he may seal a paper containing words o rnumbers in an envelope
,the contents known only
to him self and not to the operator. The operatorafter placing the sceptic in touch with receiverfor a moment, says ,
“This gentleman has writtena letter, or number, and has enclosed it in thisenvelope .
” Without hesitation the receiver willdeclare aloud the contents o f the envelope o r fromholding the watch o r glove give a very accuratedescription of his surroundings , mental conditions ,troubles , etc . , etc . The subject may, still underhypnosis, be blindfolded tightly, and any objecttaken up haphazard be placed between his brows
,
when he will be able to state the nature o f theobject . Playing cards
,any small ornament
,may
be used . Of course, onlookers must all think hard
o f the article during the experiment .
176 MYSTI C TEST B OOK, HINDU OCCULT CHAMBERS.
These chapters I n Thought Transference arevery valuable in everyday life . When as an operator, for Instance, you have learnt how to impressthe mental vision upon your “ receiver” you willfind it very easy to impress your will upon ordin ary people who have no idea at all of what isgoing on . Get first of all people in a receptivecondition and do not antagonize them ; talk aboutsomething they feel a deep interest in
,but of which
they can hold forth in a friendly and quiet spirit ;then let them talk and begin to form the mentalimage o f the thing you wish them to do ; stoplistening to what they are saying
,but look them
quietly in the face, not staring, and fix the imageon their brain. After a time you can start theconversation in the direction you Wl sll , still keeping the mind fixed on the same subject: Y o u willhave very few failures . This method of telepathic magnetism in business is invaluable, but itis not only the operator but the receiver who hasthe pull in his particular realm.
Very few people do their most brilliant workwith Thought Transference when undergoingtests
,yet they can acquire the habit of reading
the mind o f all tho se they come in contact with.
There are few people who come to me whom Icannot read as a book, without any cfi o rt o n mypart . This is simply accomplished by practice,
