ORANGE ESSENTIAL OIL SKIN REACTION

TO BALLOON

CHAPTER I

PREFACE

1.1 BackgroundAs we know, orange is one of the fruits that contain lots

of vitamin C. But in fact, there are many substances that are

contained in orange. One of them is the essential oils

contained in the orange peel. Essential oils are widely used

for material air freshener, perfume materials, and to change

the image of the taste of food more attractive. In addition,

citrus essential oil also has health benefits that are used as

aromatherapy. The smell of citrus can stabilize the nervous

system, causing feelings of pleasure and calm, increased

appetite, and cure of disease.

Is there a reaction between the essential oil from orange

peel to the balloon that is blown?

And does not react if the balloons are blown soaked in

essential oil of orange peel? To answer these questions, let

us do the experiments.

1.2 Problems1. The substance of what is contained in the orange peel?

2. What happens if the substances contained in the orange

peel on the balloon?

3. And what happens if the balloon is immersed in a solution

of the quintessence of substance?

1.3 Purpose1. To know the content is in the orange peel

2. To know the things that happens when a substance

contained in the orange peel on the balloon.

3.To determine the final condition of balloon soaked in orange peel pith.

CHAPTER II

DISCUSSION

2.1 Basic TheoryOrange is a kind of plant which from genus of citrus and

classified into the tribe Rutaceae. Citrus fruit tree-shaped

and have a round shape with a textured leather. While still

young, citrus fruit has a sour taste, but after the sour taste

of ripe covered with a distinctive sweet taste.

Orange peel contains oil called essential oils. Essential

oils are volatile by nature. Microscopically, epidermal peel

of citrus fruit consisting of a layer of rectangular cells,

berkutikula; stomatal cell types anomositik with 4 steps. His

skin was composed of three layers of cells, namely:

1. The outer layer is rigid and contains many essential oil

glands. This layer is called Layer Flavedo. Flavedo a

cell containing prismatic crystals of calcium oxalate.

2. The middle layer which acts like a sponge, made up of

spongy tissue that is usually white. This layer is called

the albedo layer. Albedo layer is almost the same as

Flavedo, but the cell size is larger than Flavedo and

further into the cell wall, the thicker. In this flavedo

and albedo are skizogen oil cavity and lisigen with

diverse sizes. And from the cavity that we can find the

essential oils.

2.2 Work Procedures1. Tools:

a) Scissors

b) Cup

c) Plastic

2. Materials:

a) Orange

b) Balloon

Way of working I (balloon blown) :a. Prepare the oranges and balloons

b. Peel the oranges, and take part of his skin.

c. Blow up balloons strained

d. Tie the ends of the balloon until there is no gap to

allow the discharge of air

e. Squeeze the orange peel toward the balloon surface

f. Observe what happens

Ways of working II (balloon soaked) :

a. Prepare a balloon that is not blown, fresh orange peel,

and glass.

b. Cut the balloon into sections

c. mash orange peel.

d. Insert the orange peel that has been mashed into the

glass.

e. Add a little water to the mashed orange peel.

f. Water will be the quintessence citrus essential oil mixed

g. Take the leftover mashed orange peel.

h. We only use essence

i. Then enter the balloon pieces into the quintessence in

the cups are closed by a plastic top.

j. Soak for 24 hours

k. And observe the changes in the color of the balloon

2.3 Data Analysis and DiscussionTreatment Observation

The balloon is blown up to strain,

and given the essential oil

splashes.

The balloon erupted in

a matter of 1 second.

Pieces of skin balloon inserted

into quintessence essential oil and

left for 24 hours.

The color of balloon

skin is fades.

1. Data Analysis

2. Discussion

Orange peel contains essential oils or oils ether are

commonly called. Based on the experimental balloons that get

splashes of orange peel essential oil can erupt. And balloon

pieces soaked in orange peel quintessence color will fade. Why

is that?

Two experimental above have the same relationship as the

cause. From the first experiment, the balloon erupted because

of volatile essential oils will react with forming polymer

rubber balloon and make it stretch. The stretch polymer will

cause the balloon can no longer hold pressure of the air

inside and make it erupt. The polymer is a chemical compound

that has a very high molecular mass and composed of simple

repeat units joined through polymerization. Polymerization is

a process of reacting monomer molecules together in a chemical

reaction to form three-dimensional networks or polymer chains.

From the second experiment, the balloon skin essential oil

soaked quintessence color fades, because the essential oils

cause the balloon to stretch the polymer skin.

CHAPTER III

CLOSING

3.1 Resume

Essential oils have a volatility that is able to stretch the

polymer rubber balloon. Marked with a balloon burst, and faded

the balloons color.
