‘Unapologetic nuclear power’Britain to expand nuke warhead stockpile by more than 40% as global threats rise

Britain will grow its nu-clear warhead stockpile by more than 40% to en-

sure its security in a more risky global environment and as it faces new technological threats, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said yesterday.

The country had previously been reducing its nuclear weap-ons stockpile, and in 2010, the government set a cap of 180 war-heads for the mid-2020 period.

Johnson has scrapped the ear-lier limit and announced the number would now rise to a maximum of 260.

The significant shift in nucle-

ar policy prompted questions from the Labour Party and con-demnation from anti-nuclear weapons campaigners.

A Whitehall source said that the UK would “be an unapolo-getic nuclear power”.

The security and defence re-view, released yesterday, sets

out how Britain hopes to shape a world where democracies can thrive, but is ready for one marked by increased conflict and division, with China seen as the biggest state threat to eco-nomic security.

Another pandemic is regarded as a “realistic possibility”, while Russia is described as “the most acute threat” to UK security.

Britain said it faced risks from nuclear-armed states, emerging nuclear states and state-spon-sored nuclear terrorism, and its nuclear deterrent was needed to guarantee its security and that of its allies.

The Prime Minister revealed the conclusions of the most sig-nificant shake-up of UK foreign, defence and security policy since the Cold War.

“The overriding purpose of this review… is to make the Unit-ed Kingdom stronger, safer and more prosperous while standing up for our values,” he told the

House of Commons.“It describes how we will

bolster our alliances, strength-en our capabilities, find new ways of reaching solutions and relearn the art of competing against states with opposing values.”

Britain also said it planned to replace its c u r r e n t n u c l e a r warhead w i t h a n e w o n e w h i c h w o u l d b e a b l e to operate throughout the lifespan of four new subma-rines being built and due to en-ter service in the early 2030s.

Bahrain-UK investment cooperation discussed

Industry, Commerce and Tourism Minister Zayed bin

Rashid Al Zayani has affirmed that the UK is an essential in-vestment partner at the global level.

He stressed growing eco-nomic relations between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the UK, pointing out deep-root-ed historical ties binding both countries and keenness on achieving common strategic visions.

Al Zayani was speaking dur-ing a meeting held with Brit-ish Minister for International Trade, Ranil Jayawardena, in the presence of Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism Undersecretary Imen Ahmed Al Dosari, Assistant Undersecretary for Local and International Trade Shaikh Hamad bin Salman Al Khali-fa, Managing Director of the Economic Development Board (EDB) Simon Galpin and senior officials.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the British Min-

ister’s visit to Bahrain. Dis-cussions focused on ways of boosting bilateral cooperation in the investment field to serve the strategic development vi-sions of the two friendly coun-tries.

Al Zayani pointed out the key role that can be played by the private sector in both countries to achieve common goals.

He also spotlighted the suitable investment climate in Bahrain and the develop-ment initiatives undertaken by the government to attract investments. He stressed the kingdom’s status as a favour-able destination for many in-ternational projects and in-vestments.

The size of trade relations between Bahrain and the UK has grown remarkably with the current overall British in-vestment in Bahrain attaining around $550 million in 2020.

Parliament committee makes 50 recommendations on pension fundsTDT | Manama

The Parliamentary Retire-ment Investigation Com-

mittee yesterday made 50 rec-ommendations to be submitted to Parliament Speaker Fouzia Zainal, the most prominent of which is the formation of a new board of directors for the Social Insurance Authority.

The new board will have ex-pertise in the field of social in-surance and investment to take

over the management of the So-cial Insurance Authority and its subsidiaries. Based on a 3,000-page report into pension funds, the recommendations will also be submitted to the government and MPs for evaluation.

The committee also recom-mended that parliamentarians use their monitoring tools to hold negligent and violators ac-countable for their actions.

It recommended the authori-ty’s commitment to developing

its strategy and approving it by the board of directors before starting implementation.

It should have community participation with citizens sub-ject to pension legislation when preparing the strategy and hold-ing workshops and seminars in this regard before the strategic plan is approved. This comes as the committee uncovered the disbursement of pensions worth BD676,000 to pensioners who were already dead.

Chief of Staff of the Bahrain Defence Force (BDF) Lieutenant-General Dhiyab bin Saqr Al Nuaimi yesterday attended part of the joint commanders’ drill, “Fortress of the Nation”, carried out by the BDF, in cooperation with the National Guard and the Interior Ministry. The chief of staff was briefed on the drill’s goals, stages and the units participating in it. He also watched part of the joint exercise, and was informed about the joint coordination, command and control mechanisms during it.

• Arab Human Rights Day celebrated yesterday

Lawmakers have stressed the development of hu-man rights in Bahrain and

lauded the proactive efforts to promote them.

In statements marking the Arab Human Rights Day, the members of the Council of Rep-resentative said that an impres-sive development of human rights has occurred during the prosperous era of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.

They lauded his initiative to establish the Arab Court of Hu-man Rights to consolidate the foundations of joint human rights action in line with the aspirations of Arab countries and peoples.

In November 2011, HM King Hamad proposed the establish-ment of an Arab human rights court.

“I will propose to our fellow Arab states that we now move concretely toward the creation of an Arab Court of Human Rights to take its proper place on the international stage,” HM the King said then.

The time had come for Arabs to set up a pan-Arab rights court, similar to those established by other regional blocs, he added.

In September 2013, the Coun-cil of the Arab League approved Bahrain’s proposal to set up the

Arab Court of Human Rights in Manama.

In their statements, the law-makers commended Bahrain’s achievements through the Council of Representatives in promulgating laws and adopting policies to consolidate human rights and strengthen the val-ues of tolerance and coexistence among the multiple components of the Bahraini society.

stant interest of HM the King, and they are protected by legis-lative and legal tools, in addition to independent institutions that play a crucial role in protecting rights and public liberties.

Bahrain is a leader in support-ing the Arab institutional and judicial work, as it was among the first countries that ratified the Arab Human Rights Charter in 2006, in addition to HM King Hamad’s call for establishing the Arab Court for Human Rights.

In 2019, the Arab League’s “Charter Committee” lauded

Bahrain’s national human rights report, and in 2021, the Arab Parliament praised the king-dom’s wide-ranging reforms in the fields of human rights pro-tection and respect for the free-doms of expression and opinion thanks to its advanced constitu-tional, judicial and parliamenta-ry institutions.

The Arab Parliament also re-jected foreign interference in Bahrain’s domestic affairs.

Bahrain, out of its belief in the global dimension of human rights, has consolidated its sta-tus as a pioneering model for the respect of human rights and reli-gious freedoms, through the es-tablishment of the King Hamad Global Center for Peaceful Co-existence, the foundation of the King Hamad Chair for peaceful coexistence at Italy’s La Sapien-za University, and the launch of the “Kingdom of Bahrain Decla-ration”, the International Day of Conscience and many awards for service to humanity, education, sustainable development, wom-en empowerment and youth.

Bahrain also signed the Stra-tegic Partnership Framework Agreement with 16 UN agencies to support UN goals of safeguard-ing peace, security, human rights and sustainable development.

The Bahrain Film Festival ad-ministration has announced

the allocation of the Student Film Award in the name of the late Farid Ramadan.

The announcement of the festival’s first session results

was postponed last year due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Instead, the organ-isers will make the announce-ment next month.

The festival management confirmed the change of the name of the Student Film Award to Unique Ramadan Award for Student Films to bear the name of the writer, scriptwriter and

late producer, with the alloca-tion of a financial reward worth BD1,000 to the winner provided by Nuran Pictures.

The films participating in the festival competition include five categories, namely short fictional films, documentaries, animation, films of the Center for Excellence for Women, and the Farid Ramadan Award for Student Films.

The festival management named Farid Ramadan on the first session of the festival in honour and appreciation of his role in the field of cinematic production, as he provided many film scripts and support-ed throughout his career many promising Bahraini energies in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Employee’s passport used to leave Bahrain

• Asian contractor dodges travel ban

An Asian contractor who has travel ban used one

of his employees’ passports to leave Bahrain, it was re-vealed.

The man was wanted in several financial claims so he was listed on the travel ban out of Bahrain, pending settlement of his debts.

He is said to have default-ed in settling his bills which reach BD22,000. His escape was discovered after a Bah-raini contractor wanted to change the work permit of the victim, whose passport was exploited to facilitate the culprit’s exit.

According to court files, it was found that the contrac-tor lodged a complaint at his country’s embassy, claiming that his employee lost his passport.

Four Bahraini pilots promoted to become captains at Gulf Air

Four Bahraini pilots at Gulf Air, the national carrier of

the Kingdom of Bahrain, have completed the final check for command upgrade training and were eventually promoted to be captains.

Ahmed Ismaeel, Ahmed Janahi, Mohammed Kamal and Moham-med Malek were congratulated by the airline’s top management for their promotion and uniform up-

grade from three to four stripes.All the newly promoted cap-

tains have started their flying career with Gulf Air beginning from second officer and com-pleting the required training and flying hours to become first officers and recently captains.

Gulf Air is committed to in-vesting in its Bahraini workforce and their career development and as such, it continues to pro-vide opportunities for Bahraini nationals to take over senior po-sitions in the company.

On this occasion, Gulf Air’s Act-ing Chief Executive Officer Cap-tain Waleed AlAlawi said: “We are very proud of our Bahraini work-force and flying crew and I’m hap-py to see them work their way up and be promoted from first officers to captains. This is not the peak of their career but only the beginning of them shining in Gulf Air with opportunities to become senior captains, trainings captains, fleet managers or part of senior or executive management in the future.”

With five vaccines al-ready available for all in the Kingdom of

Bahrain, we are starting to see a way to restore health, econo-mies and societies together, and genuinely get back to normal life.

Bahrain has authorised the emergency use of five vaccines against COVID-19, namely Pfiz-er/BioNTech, Sinopharm, As-traZeneca’s Covishield, Sputnik V and most recently the one-shot Johnson & Johnson.

Although the global health crisis seems to have been with us for a long time, the reality however is that the pandemic is still in early days, if we were to believe the experts around the world. In fact, infections and deaths are still accelerat-ing with almost a year into the pandemic.

Even though many of us have been dreaming about the day that things go back to normal, re-entry into the real world might not be all smooth sailing. It might actually be a differ-ent life when we get out of this

pandemic.Basically, for the next year,

maybe two, we will have to adjust to the “new normal” in our lifetime. We can expect to see lots of changes when we emerge into the “new normal”, from a favourite café that didn’t survive the shutdown to greet-ings between friends that now consist of a nod, a wave, and a fist or elbow bump rather than an effusive hug, or handshakes.

The desire to pick up old habits like a dinner party with friends and family might be tinged with concern about whether it’s really wise to so-cialise in close contact with others.

Getting from place to place will be different, too. Fear of public transit is likely to linger regardless of whether or not they can be made safer through a combination of mask-wearing and social distancing.

Temperature checks and sen-

sors will be routine in office buildings and airports. Smart-phone apps will alert those who have come in contact with in-fected people and allow public health authorities to track their movements.

For those who have lost in-come or jobs, there are also practical concerns to grapple with – finding work, meeting financial commitments, or ne-gotiating with landlords and banks to manage rent, mort-gages and credit card payments.

A lot of things that people are going to be worrying about will be economic issues – their fu-ture, their career, among others.

These financial pressures will be front and centre of many people’s lives for the foreseea-ble future and could have a sig-nificant impact on their mental health.

Basically, for the next year, maybe two, we will have to adjust to the “new normal” in our lifetime. We can expect to see lots of

changes when we emerge into the “new

normal”.

Education Minister Dr Majid bin Ali Al Nuaimi yesterday

visited a number of schools, following the resumption of the partial in-person learning amid strict precautionary health measures, while the remaining students continued studying re-motely, based on the discretion of their parents or guardians.

The Minister was briefed by the Assistant Undersecre-tary for Education, Latifa Al Bunoodha and school prin-cipals on the precautionary measures in place at schools to protect the health and safety of

the school community.He also met a number of stu-

dents, and was informed about their remarks regarding the preemptive measures imple-mented at their schools.

The measures included the mandatory medical face mask-wearing, temperature checking upon entry, social distancing at classrooms and school facilities, in addition to the allocation of school centres for rapid tests.

Dr Al Nuaimi was informed about the efforts being made to ensure the continuity of the learning process at classrooms, workshops and laboratories.

He was also informed about samples of schools’ creative and innovative initiatives that support the Ministry’s efforts during the current exceptional circumstances.

Dr Al Nuaimi stressed the Ministry’s keenness to im-plement the directives of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and His Royal Highness

Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, on the need for field follow-up of the progress of the educational process, and ensuring that all measures to limit the spread of the corona-virus are in place.

He highlighted the Minis-try’s continuous efforts to pro-vide education for all students, whether for those who choose blended learning, through in-person attendance and on-line learning, or for those who choose to study online through the e-content-rich educational portal, virtual lessons, televised lessons or lessons on the Edu-cation Ministry’s 14 YouTube channels. The Minister com-mended the efforts being made by schools to motivate students and ensure they receive the ap-propriate educational services.

He added that the Ministry’s efforts also covered private schools through facilitating the holding of international exami-nations they apply.

Following their first successful forum in 2016 in Tunisia, CIBAFI and UAB mem-bers and stakeholders convened to discuss sustainable economic growth within the Islamic finance industry, focusing on the MENA region.

This timely forum provides a platform for discussions on how Islamic financial institutions in MENA region are facing the current pandemic with greater flexibility and strength. It aims to address the chal-lenges and showcase the opportunities that Islamic finance presents to enable sustain-able economic growth.

The forum witnessed an unrivalled turn-out of official representatives from the international and national organisations, governments, financial institutions, Islamic finance practitioners, private sector, policy-

makers, and regulators, in addition to media and other stakeholders.

CIBAFI Secretary General Dr Abdelilah Belatik delivered an opening remark where he stressed on the growing importance of sustainability and innovation within the financial industry in general and Islamic financial services industry in particular.

UAB Secretary General Wissam Fattouh discussed 10 important goals to be achieved by Islamic finance and Islamic Banking.

Council approves engineering office joint ownershipTDT | Manama

The Council for Regulating the Practice of Engineer-

ing Professions (CRPEP) has recently announced that it had approved ownership of an en-gineering office, previously licensed with the Engineering Council.

It was licensed to three engi-neers as the engineering office, each holding equal shares.

The Council stated that it encourages such type of joint ownership as it guarantees the survival of these offices and their continuation in the event of the death of one of the owners.

The current regulations governing this sector stipulate that the license of an engineer-ing office shall expire follow-ing the death of the owner of the engineering office if the license was based on a single proprietor basis.

CRPEP explained that the procedures for collective own-ership i.e. – the transfer of the ownership of an engineering office owned by one person to several people – has its own procedures at the Council, the most important being the re-evaluation of the licenses of

the new owners and ensuring that they meet all the condi-tions stipulated in the Law and the Executive Regulations.

Additionally, one of the own-ers will need to be assigned the responsibilities as the Director and primary point of contact for the Council and other rel-evant stakeholders, and to han-dle the office’s affairs and busi-ness in accordance with the provisions of Law No. (51) of 2014 regarding the regulation of the engineering professions and its Executive Regulations.

The Council explained that it is also currently reviewing the Law and the Executive Regulations in an effort to separate an engineering of-fice’s financial ownership and its technical, engineering and financial management, to en-sure the long-term continuity and sustainability of the engi-neering office.

The Council concluded that it urges all engineering offic-es to take the initiative to opt for joint ownership and thus submit applications for merg-ers or the addition of owners, whenever deemed necessary to ensure the continuity and development of the engineer-ing sector.

Health Ministry employees jailed for rigging attendance recordTDT | Manama

The High Criminal Court sentenced four Health

Ministry employees to one year behind bars for manipu-lating their attendance record in order to add overtime hours on top of their original extra working hours, for which they received various amounts.

The four men were paid a total amount ranging between BD1,900 and BD600 each, and the High Criminal Court ordered them to return the money they unduly received. On top of that, they were also fined equal amounts each for the crime.

The defendants were tried after they triggered suspicions

for demanding to be paid extra for staying at work for extra hours.

They submitted their elec-tronic attendance log as proof after they found a way to rig it. They were investigated and, later, tried for forgery and dis-honesty.

Gulf Aviation Academy announced receiving approval to launch its

own Air Traffic Control (ATC) training in the Kingdom.

The certification as an Ap-proved Training Organisation (ATO) is from the Bahrain Civil Aviation Affairs (BCAA) at the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunication.

The certification qualifies GAA to train air traffic control-lers in Bahrain and the region through all levels, including ‘ba-sic and advanced’ qualification.

GAA said its independent ATC training programme aims to position the academy as a regional hub for ATC. Cours-es offered include pilot and cabin crew training, aircraft engineering, aviation security (AVSEC), airport operations and management, ground training, maritime, and other courses compatible with international standards.

The Ministry of Transpor-tation and Telecommunica-tions Civil Aviation Affairs, Under-Secretary, Mohammed Thamer Al Kaabi, said, “The move allows controllers here to train under the direct su-pervision of the Civil Aviation Affairs.”

“This certification represents another remarkable milestone

by the academy in recent years, and we can now proudly offer approved top-notch ATC train-ing on different levels to our clients in Bahrain, the GCC and throughout the world,” GAA CEO, Captain Dhaffer Al Ab-basi, said.

“This launch comes within our solid commitment to offer-ing a diverse number of training services at reasonable rates and in line with GAA’s strategy to establish itself as a pioneering hub for aviation and logistics training in the region. Airports and individuals can now bene-fit from our high-quality ATC training, which is compliant with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) regulations. spokesman for the interior ministry said. Britain’s Prince Philip, the 99-year-old husband of

Queen Elizabeth, left a Lon-don hospital yesterday after a four-week stay for treatment for an infection and to have a heart procedure.

Philip, the Duke of Edin-burgh, was admitted to the private King Edward VII’s Hospital on Feb. 16 after he felt unwell and was given treatment for an unspecified, but not COVID-19-related, illness.

He was transferred briefly at the start of this month to a specialist cardiac centre at an-other London hospital, where he underwent a successful procedure for a pre-existing heart condition.

A Reuters witness said the duke left the King Edward hospital shortly after 10.30 GMT on Tuesday. He was tak-en to a waiting car in a wheel-chair and returned to Wind-sor Castle, the royal residence west of London, waving to those outside as he arrived.

“His Royal Highness wish-es to thank all the medical

staff who looked after him at both King Edward VII’s Hos-pital and St Bartholomew’s Hospital, and everyone who has sent their good wishes,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

A royal source said the prince was in good spirits.

Since being admitted, the duke has been publicly vis-ited only by his eldest son Prince Charles, the heir to the throne.

The queen, 94, has re-mained at Windsor Castle where the couple have been staying during the coronavi-rus pandemic, and has con-tinued to carry out her official duties by video.

Both she and Philip have received their first COVID-19 vaccine dose.

The Greek-born prince, who turns 100 in June, has required hospital treatment a number of times in the last decade for a recurrence of a bladder infection.

Asked about Meghan’s disclosure of the remark about the skin of Meghan and Harry’s son, former US first lady Obama told NBC News: “I feel like that was heartbreaking to hear, that she felt like she was in her own family — her own fam-ily thought differently of her.”

Children as young as 11 are being beheaded in Mozam-

bique, UK-based aid group Save the Children said yesterday, as part of an insurgency that has killed thousands and forced many magnitudes more from their homes.

Save the Children said it had spoken to displaced families who described “horrifying scenes” of murder, including mothers whose young sons were killed. In one case, the woman hid, helpless, with her three other children as her 12-year-old was murdered nearby.

“We tried to escape to the woods, but they took my eld-est son and beheaded him,” the 28-year-old, who Save the Chil-

dren called Elsa, is quoted as saying.

“We couldn’t do anything be-cause we would be killed too.”

Another mother, a 29-year-old

Save the Children calls Amelia, said her son was just 11 when he was killed by armed men.

Reuters could not immediate-ly reach Mozambique police or

government spokespeople for comment.

Mozambique’s northernmost province of Cabo Delgado has since 2017 been home to a fester-

ing insurgency, linked to Islamic State, that has escalated dramati-cally in the past year.

While beheadings have always been a hallmark of the attacks, throughout 2020 the insurgents began regularly engaging the military to capture and hold key towns. Brutality also continued, with mass killings including the murder of around 52 people at once in the village of Xitaxi in April.

Altogether almost 2,700 peo-ple on all sides have died in the

violence, according to the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED), a consultancy that tracks political violence. Al-most 670,000 people have been displaced, Save the Children said.

The United States last week declared the Mozambique group a foreign terrorist organisation over its links to Islamic State, say-ing the group reportedly pledged allegiance to it as early as 2018. Is-lamic State claimed its first attack in Cabo Delgado in June 2019.

The US embassy in Mozam-bique on Monday said US special forces will train Mozambican ma-rines for two months, with the country also providing medical and communications equipment, to help Mozambique combat the insurgency.

Chance Briggs, Save the Chil-dren’s country director in Mo-zambique, said reports of attacks on children “sicken us to our core”.

“The violence has to stop and displaced families need to be sup-ported as they find their bearings and recover from trauma,” Briggs continued.

Sri Lanka said yesterday a call to ban the wearing of the burqa was “merely a proposal”, following criticism from regional

allies ahead of a crucial United Nations vote on human rights in the island nation.

Sri Lanka’s minister for public security, Sarath Weerasekera, said on Saturday it would “definitely” ban the full face covering worn by some Muslim women on national security grounds, pending cabinet approval.

But the foreign ministry said on Tuesday a decision had not yet been taken on what it described as “merely a proposal... under discussion”.

“The government will initiate a broader dialogue with all parties concerned and sufficient time will be taken for neces-sary consultations to be held and for consensus to be reached,” it said in a statement.

Muslims make up around a tenth of the population in major-ity-Buddhist Sri Lanka.

The statement follows criticism from Pakistan’s ambassador to Sri Lanka, Saad Kattak, who said in a tweet on Monday a ban “will only serve as injury to the feelings of ordinary Sri Lankan Muslims and Muslims across the globe”.

Ahmed Shaheed, a Maldivian diplomat currently serving as the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief, said a ban was incompatible with international laws that protect religious belief and freedom of expression.

Several Muslim-majority countries, including Pakistan and Bangladesh, are among the 47 nations that will vote on Sri Lanka’s human rights record at a United Nations session in Geneva next week.

A UN resolution passed against Sri Lanka could allow for prosecutions of government and military officials involved in ending a decades-long civil war in 2009, and Colombo is sen-sitive to anything that may impact voting there, according to a person familiar with the developments.

Almost a third of the 47 nations are members of the Organ-isation of Islamic Cooperation, which last year criticised a Sri Lankan policy to forcibly cremate coronavirus victims in the country, in violation of the Islamic tradition of burial.

American singer-actor Demi Lovato is soon going to treat

her fans to some fresh music. The star on Monday revealed details about her new album ‘Dancing With the Devil: The Art of Starting Over’, including the release date of it.

The singer posted the cover of the album on her Twitter han-dle and wrote, “Dancing With The Devil The Art Of Starting Over #DWTDTAOSO Album out April 2!”

The album is set to release on April 2, this year. It will mark her first album after a long hi-atus. As per Variety, during a livestream on Clubhouse Mon-day night, Lovato revealed that her first album since 2017 is ti-tled ‘Dancing With the Devil... The Art of Starting Over’.

Lovato teased some details about the album, including the

kind of music one could expect from it. Lovato described the album as a mashup of genres, including country, R&B, and ‘90s pop.

She also revealed that the al-bum will contain 19 tracks, with three bonus songs, and teased three collaborations on the record, one of which might be with singer Aria-na Grande.

While talking about the title of the album, Demi revealed that i t was ini-tially called ‘The Art of S t a r t i n g Over’, but then she decided to add ‘Dancing with the Devil’ to it in order

to reflect the importance of her upcoming documentary of the same name.

“If you lis-ten to it track by

track, if you follow the tracklist-ing, it’s kind of actually like the non-official soundtrack to the documentary. Because it really does follow my life over the past couple of years,” Demi said.

“When we went through the track listing and kind of mapped out how it kind of coincided with my life’s story, it made sense to add the more emotion-al stuff in the beginning and then transition into ‘The Art of Starting Over,’” the ‘Camp Rock’ actor added.

The album would be a part of Demi’s upcoming documentary titled ‘Demi Lovato: Dancing With the Devil’ which will focus on the 28-year-old star’s strug-gle with addiction, particularly her 2018 overdose.

In the trailer for the docu-mentary, released on February 17, Demi disclosed that she suf-fered three strokes and a heart attack after the 2018 overdose.

Hassan “Fearless” Talal has been fighting since he was a young kid

After the emergence of dif-ferent strains of COVID-19, BRAVE CF has elevated the guidelines and procedures for the BRAVE CF Bubble which is taking place at the Nordic Pal-ace & Spa in Seef District, Bah-rain for the Return of Kombat Kingdom series.

In accordance with the rules and regulation of the Minis-try of Health in the Kingdom of Bahrain, BRAVE CF fighters are getting tested post-arrival at the Bahrain International Airport before getting trans-ported to the bubble. Fighters are quarantined in their hotel rooms until their PCR results are out before taking part in any media activities.

Training areas are set up in

every fighter’s room with am-ple space for extra precaution and allocated times are set for fighters to use the gym and sauna. Facilities are disinfect-ed and aired out after each use to ensure the safety of every-one involved.

Throughout the week, med-ical units are being sent to the guests rooms on a daily basis to conduct PCR tests for fighters, corner, officials, and TV talent. Staff is also tested on a daily basis, along with everyone in-volved with the event in and outside the bubble.

Filipina fighter Olsim makes ONE debutTDT | Manila

After more than a year of hi-atus, striker Jenelyn Olsim

of the Philippines will make her ONE Championship women’s strawweight debut on Friday, March 19, in ONE: “Fists of Fury III” against Brazilian knockout artist Maira Mazar at the Singa-pore Indoor Stadium.

The 2019 Southeast Asian Games silver medalist Olsim, representing Team Lakay, went 1-1 in ONE Championship’s de-velopmental league, ONE War-rior Series.

Despite losing her last fight via a first round armbar against Caitlin McEwen in 2019, Ol-sim still earned a spot in the big league. Olsim’s other fight in the ONE Warrior Series is a unanimous decision over Clau-dia Diaz.

Expect Olsim’s fight with Mazar to be full of action be-cause the latter is also known for her striking ability.

Mazar is a Sanda champion and is an assistant instructor at Evolve MMA in Singapore. She has fought twice in the ONE Championship and went 1-1.

Mazar made her ONE debut in 2020 and lost to Ayaka Miura via a second round American submission. But she bounced back with a ground-and-pound victory over Jung Yoon Choi later that year.

Olsim is 3-2, while Mazar is 7-3.

Team Lakay coach Mark Sangiao is confident that Olsim would show a different side of

her in the Circle against Mazar.“I’ve seen Jenelyn’s attitude

in training. She’s very diligent, very technical with her style now. So I think we have a high chance of winning,” said San-giao.

“Jenelyn is a muay thai ath-lete, a striker. That’s why we balanced it. We worked on with her technically, both on ground and wrestling. Right now, expect a complete athlete in Jenelyn.”

Amid the coronavirus pan-demic, Sangiao said they have been working on Olsim’s ground game and technicality,

which is part of her develop-ment in transitioning to MMA.

“She’s a good listener. She does the tasks given to her. Jenelyn is willing to learn. And I can see a high chance of win-ning,” the soft-spoken coach added.

Also seeing action on the same card is Filipino-Indone-sian Aziz Calim. Calim is taking on Indian Roshan Mainam.

Calim hopes to bounce back after losing to Ryuto Sawada via a first round rear-naked-choke submission in 2019.

Mainam, on the other hand, is on a hot streak after win-ning both of his fights in the ONE with submission wins over Khon Sichan and Peng Shuai Liu.

Calim is 6-5, while Mainam is 5-2.

The main event of “Fists of Fury III” features a ONE kick-boxing lightweight champion-ship bout between defending champion Regian Eersel (55-4) and challenger Mustapha Hai-da (54-11-3).

contributions were reward-ed by Barangay Ginebra San Miguel with a fresh three-year contract extension.

Player-agent Danny Espiritu confirmed that the hardwork-ing do-it-all guy signed his new contract on March 12 – a month before the team is slated to kick off its Philippine Basketball As-sociation (PBA) title-retention bid in the Philippine Cup and five months before his existing pact with the team expires on August 21 this year.

The former University of Perpetual Help player wanted to waive his rights to become a free agent next year because of his deep interest to remain a Gin King under Coach Tim Cone.

Although details of the con-tract weren’t revealed, sourc-es learned Thompson got the maximum terms for three years which is worth 420,000 pesos a month.

Now entering his sixth PBA season with Ginebra, Thomp-son has transformed into one of the marquee players for the league’s most popular ballclub.

Thompson played a pivotal role for Ginebra in winning its first All-Filipino championship in 13 years.
