A move in the right directionFree vaccine for all shows Bahrain’s resolve to fight pandemic without discrimination, say Parliamentarians

TDT | Manama

The decision to provide Coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines free of cost to

all Bahraini citizens and resi-dents was received with great applause by top officials, par-liamentarians citizens and resi-dents from all over the Kingdom hailing it as a move in the right direction.

HRH Prince Salman bin Ham-ad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister announced the decision to provide vaccines free of charge in a statement post the Government Executive Committee meeting late Friday.

The vaccination, for all over 18 years of age through 27 med-ical centres, will start with 5,000 people per day at first, and 10,000 per day at a later stage.

Parliamentarians hailing the decision said the move reflects the great strides Bahrain made in the field of human rights and freedom.

Bassem Al-Maliki, a Member of the Parliament, said the de-cision shows the great concern Bahrain attaches in protecting the health of its citizens and res-idents.

“Free vaccine indicates the hu-manitarian approach the King-

dom follows and the strength of its health security policies,” said Al Maliki.

He pointed out that the di-rective confirms that Bahrain is continuing its fight against the deadly pandemic without any discrimination.

Bahrain team, Al Maliki said, led by HRH Prince Salman bin

Hamad Al Khalifa has succeed-ed in containing the pandemic and its repercussion at all levels by providing seamless support to people here.

“Free vaccination will help restore the life to its normality and contribute to the econom-ic and financial strength of the Kingdom,” stressed Al Maliki.

MP Hamad Ahmed Al-Kooheji  viewed the directive to provide free vaccination as the feature of Bahrain’s humanitarian ap-proach that takes into account all without discrimination.

Bahrain, Al Kooheji said, has made tremendous and exem-plary efforts to confront the pandemic and its repercussion on the economy, thanks to the guidance and continuous follow up of His Royal Highness Prince

Salman. Al Kooheji said the move

would help Bahrain regain its economic strength and push life back to normality.

MP Ghazi Al-Rahma, a mem-ber of the House of Represent-atives’ Foreign Affairs, Defense and National Security Commit-tee, described the move as a cul-mination of the extraordinary efforts Bahrain exerted in the past few months in fighting the pandemic.

Al Rahma praised the great strides made by the   Bah-rain team led by HRH Prince Sal-man in addressing the Corona pandemic.

The team, he said, was suc-cessful in reducing the spread of the outbreak and bringing down the infection to its lowest level.

Rational approach

MP Ahmed Sabah Al-Salloum, Chairman of the Bahrain Asso-ciation for the Development of Small and Medium Enterprises, hailed the move as a “rational approach” taken by His Majesty the King.

“Bahrain has presented a

unique model in supporting en-trepreneurs in the Kingdom and achieved the highest possible level of human rights princi-ples.”

Bahrain, he said, has set a model for human rights during the Coronavirus outbreak and presented an image of equality in its best form without any dis-crimination.

Member of the Specific Com-mittee for Human Rights, MP Khaled Bouanq said the move proves that people of Bahrain are the leadership’s prime con-cern.

“This is also not surprising as His Majesty the King and HRH the Crown Prince are always there at the forefront when it comes to protecting the health of the citizens,” he added.

Temporary jobs drop to new low in govt sector: Minister

• Number of employees with temporary contracts in government sectors is 26

TDT | Manama

Employees with tempo-rary contracts in the gov-ernment sectors are on

the decline, with their number dropping to as low as 26 this month, revealed Minister of Shura and Parliament Affairs.

In reply to a question by Shura Council member Fouad Ahmed Al-Hajji, Ghanim Fadhel Al Buainain said the government offers temporary contracts only to cover urgent needs.

“Temporary contracts are mostly for covering the absence of an employee who goes out on leave or when the government

needs more hands to support some emergency programmes or projects,” the minister said.

The appointments are based solely on the recommendation of governmental authorities, subject to the approval of the Civil Service Bureau.

When asked about the proce-

dures to cancel the temporary contracts, the minister said can-cellations are at the request of a government agency.

“Such an action occurs to fill the post with a permanent em-ployee, provided a vacancy is available in the organisational structure and within the max-

imum job limit for government agencies.”

On renewal of a temporary contract for more than one year, Al-Buainain explained that the renewal is legal and based on Resolution No. (51) of 2012 related to the executive reg-ulations for the Civil Service

A plan is prepared to reach this goal at health centres in the general budget for the year 2021 -’22, Al Saleh added.

The ministry, she said, is also working on to provide the assis-tance of sign language interpret-ers for physicians interacting with people having impaired hearing.

TDT | Manama

A proposal to define the strategic stock of food

commodities to better organ-ise the food supplies in the event of crises, emergen-cies and disaster to achieve food sustainability has been tabled.

The proposal by the Shu-ra Council members aims at amending a provision of the Consumer Protection law by adding a definition of the stra-tegic stock of food commod-ities.

Members Dr Jehad Abdul-lah Mohammed Alfadhel, Ja-mal Mohamed Al-Fakhro, Dr Muhammad Ali Hassan Ali, Bassam Ismail Ebrahim Al-binmohamed, and Ali Abdul-lah Ali Husain Alaradi tabled the proposal.

Explaining, the members said there needs an article in the law requiring the con-cerned ministry to work in co-ordination with the authorities for preparing a food security strategy.

The strategy, the members said, should determine the size of the strategic stock of food commodities and the percent-age of safety stocks required.

The plans and programmes should also consider increas-ing the capacity of the stock in the event of increased demand,

the members stressed. The proposal also calls for

preparing a database outlining the production and availability of food commodities based on the countries of its origin.

To ensure a safe strategic stock, the members also called for conducting a periodic re-view besides reporting it to the council of ministers.

End Iran’s lethal support to Houthis (Continues from page 1)

Citing the recent attacks on Saudi Arabia, he said that the Houthis had once

again demonstrated that they are not interested in constructive engagement towards peace.

The US official told media per-sons from all over the Gulf that the US is keen to see an end to the provision of Iran’s lethal support to Houthis to help them play their proper role in a political process.

He said that “at the end of the day there isn’t going to be a mil-itary solution to the conflict in Yemen.”

Lenderking, however, said that the US is viewing with a great deal of concern the on-going attacks from the Houthis into Saudi Arabia targeting ci-vilian structures like airports, which he said are obviously be-yond the bounds of normal civ-ilized warfare, and their attacks inside Yemen as well.

“And it’s very disconcerting, I think, from our point of view to see that Iran has continued to fuel the conflict by providing weapons, providing training in those weapons, and enabling the Houthis to conduct more sophisticated and more consist-ent attacks across the border,” he added.

Qatar a very strong allyTo a question about the

Gulf-Qatar normalisation of ties, Lenderking said that at the end of the day, the parties will have

to figure out their way forward.” The US, he said, will leave

to the Gulf nations to describe any sort of rapprochement that might emerge in the future.

“We can do – we can help, and we have helped, I think, and Kuwait can help as a mediator. They have also helped.”

US policy consistent Lenderking, however, said

that there’s a certain consisten-cy to American policy towards the region.

“I’m quite sure that the Biden administration will also grasp the strategic importance of these bilateral relationships, and Pres-ident-elect Biden is no stranger to these countries themselves.”

Lenderking expressed con-

fidence that the Biden will go forward with very strong rela-tions will the countries in the region.

“I can’t really speculate about how the new administration will approach the Iran problem. But I can say that there are certain consistencies.”

Lenderking said the “goal of the Trump administration’s maximum pressure campaign has not been to destroy Iran or to bring down the leadership. It has been to try and force a change in behaviour, and that’s – I think any American administration would want to see different be-haviour out of Iran because so much of what we see is very con-cerning when you look at their support for various conflicts.”

He also said that the US has made a lot of progress in its ties with the Gulf states which have set a direction in going forward also citing the US-Bahrain Stra-tegic Dialogue.

The dialogue, he said, the fifth strategic dialogue we’ve held since September followed by talks with Saudi, UAE, Kuwait and Qatar.

All these activities, he said, underscores the importance that the United States places on our Gulf relationships, and it will continue because the Arabian Peninsula will always have stra-tegic importance to us.

Defence ties in the GulfLenderking also expressed

pride in defence cooperation

US had in the Gulf citing the US Navy Central Command and Fifth Fleet’s headquarters in Bahrain.

He also hailed the contribu-tions made the Gulf Partners in defeating the ISIS in Iraq and Syria.

Expanding ties Lenderking said the US is

expanding cooperation in the region in public health, biomed-ical research, renewable energy, agriculture, aviation, artificial intelligence, while opening op-portunities to establish secure telecommunication networks and policies that attract trusted global telecoms and information technology companies.

He also shared his excitement

in the participation of the US in the Expo 2020 in Dubai.

Sanctions on Turkey? The briefing also occurred as

news of US imposing sanctions on Turkey leaked out, which President Tayyip Erdogan said would be disrespectful to a NATO ally.

Reuters, quoting five sources, had said that the sanctions on Turkey were over its acquisition last year of Russian S-400 air defence systems.

The sanctions would target Turkey’s Presidency of Defence Industries and its head, Ismail Demir, sources have said. They would be damaging but nar-rower than the severe scenarios some analysts have outlined.

The goal of the Trump administration’s maximum pressure campaign has not been to destroy Iran or to bring down the leadership.

It has been to try and force a change in behaviour, and that’s – I think any American administration would want to see different

behaviour out of Iran because so much of what we see is very concerning when you look at their

support for various conflicts

EU sees no-deal Brexit more likely than new UK trade pact: EU official

Reuters | Brussels

European Commission President Ursula von

der Leyen told the 27 na-tional EU leaders meeting in Brussels yesterday a no-deal split in trading ties with Britain at the end of the year was now more likely than not, an official said.

Von der Leyen spoke for less than 10 minutes about Brexit as EU leaders started their second day of talks, having spent the whole night haggling over raising the bloc’s ambition on fight-ing climate.

“Situation is difficult. Main obstacles remain,” the EU official said of the message shared with the leaders by von der Leyen, who heads the EU’s execu-tive European Commission, which is negotiating with Britain on Brexit for the whole bloc.

“The probability of a no deal is higher than of a deal,” the official said. “To be seen by Sunday whether a deal is possible.”

The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity, also said there was progress in implementing the earlier EU-UK divorce agreement with provisions for the sen-sitive Irish border.

Sanofi and GSK delay COVID-19 vaccineReuters | Paris

Sanofi and GlaxoSmith-Kline said clinical trials

of their COVID-19 vaccine showed an insufficient im-mune response in older peo-ple, delaying its launch to late next year and marking a setback in the global fight against the pandemic.

The news, which came on the same day as Austral-ia axed a domestic vaccine project, is also a blow for many governments that have booked hundreds of millions of doses of the shot, including the European Union, United States and Britain.

The two companies said they planned to start an-other study next February, hoping to come up with a more effective vaccine by the end of 2021.

The setback affects one of the most established technologies in vaccines - used against the human papillomavirus, hepati-tis B and pertussis among other pathogens - which aims to introduce lab-made proteins into the body to prod the immune system into developing a targeted defence against the novel coronavirus.

Hyundai Motor to buy robot maker Boston DynamicsReuters | Seoul

Hyundai Motor Group units and its chairman have

agreed to buy an 80 per cent stake in robot maker Boston Dy-namics from SoftBank Group Corp for around 800 billion to 900 bn won ($736 million-$828 m), a person familiar with the matter said yesterday.

Hyundai can leverage the ro-bot technology to expand auto-mation at its unionised car fac-tories, as well as design auton-omous vehicles like self-driving cars, drones and delivery robots, analysts said.

The move comes after new-ly-promoted chairman Euisun Chung pledged to reduce reli-ance on traditional car manu-

facturing, saying robotics will account for 20pc of the com-

pany’s future business, with car-making taking up 50pc, fol-

lowed by urban air mobility at 30pc.

Chung will own a 20pc stake in Boston Dynamics, while Hyundai Motor and its affiliates, Hyundai Mobis and Hyundai Glovis, will hold a combined 60pc stake, two people said, ask-ing not to be identified because the matter is confidential. One of the sources confirmed the value of the deal.

Hyundai Motor and SoftBank declined to comment.

“The acquisition would help Hyundai offer a seamless ap-proach to goods delivery with the help of delivery robots and driverless vehicles such as cars and planes,” Koh Tae-bong, an analyst at Hi Investment & Se-curities.

India’s passenger vehicle sales rise 13pc in November

Reuters | Bengaluru

India’s domestic passenger vehicle sales rose 12.73 per

cent in November, data from an auto industry body showed on Friday, helped by the easing of coronavirus lockdowns and a surge in demand during the festive season.

Automakers typically stock up dealerships ahead of the country’s festive season that begins in September and runs until November, during which Indians typically make big pur-chases.

Total passenger vehicle sales in November rose to 2,85,367 in units from 2,53,139 a year earlier, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) said on Friday.

That rise came after a 14.2pc uptick in October.

India’s gross domestic product in the July-Septem-ber quarter contracted 7.5pc year on year, compared with a decline of 23.9pc in the pre-vious quarter, and several economists have predicted a steady recovery in the coming months. SIAM Director Gen-

eral Rajesh Menon said while the festive season brought back some fervour, the over-all economic scenario would determine the industry’s per-formance going forward.

The Indian auto sector was already facing a bruising slowdown in demand when the government imposed a na-tionwide lockdown in March to curb the spread of the new coronavirus, bringing busi-nesses to a grinding halt.

Demand for personal trans-port, which is seen as a safer travel option amid the pan-demic, has driven up sales of small cars and motorbikes in the last couple of months.

Reuters | Kuala Lumpur

Malaysia’s Petronas has made its first hydrocar-

bon discovery in Suriname

with the successful drill-ing of the Sloanea-1 explora-tion well located in Block 52, the state-owned oil firm said yesterday..

Block 52, which covers an area of 4,749 square km, is located north of the coast of Suriname capital Paramaribo and is sit-uated within the prospective Suriname-Guyana basin, where several major hydrocarbon dis-coveries have been made, Pet-ronas said.

The firm said the Sloanea-1

exploration well encountered several hydrocarbon-bearing sandstone packages with good reservoir qualities in the Cam-panian section.

“The well data proves excel-lent calibration of the hydro-carbon potential of the block,” it said, adding that it is under-taking further evaluation to de-termine the full extent of the discovery.

The discovery will drive Pet-ronas to continue exploring in Suriname. Representative picture

BoE says fully armoured for any Brexit disruption• BoE announced it would allow banks to restart paying dividends and executive bonuses

• Unemployment was expected to peak at 7.8pc

Reuters | London

The Bank of England took steps yesterday to keep banks lending through

2021 as Britain copes with the COVID-19 pandemic, saying it was ready to deal with any market disruption from a big change in the UK’s trading re-lationship with the European Union.

Governor Andrew Bailey said Britain had done all it can to mitigate risks from a no-deal departure from the EU on Dec. 31, and it was ready to deal with any disruptions to financial markets.

“What has the Bank of Eng-land got in its armoury, as it were? The answer is a lot. We will use our tools, as we did in March, should we be in that situation,” Bailey told a news conference.

Market disruptions would not threaten financial stability, but Bailey warned that some EU customers might not be able to get access to UK financial services because the EU has not taken mitigating action.

“There is a limit to what we can do,” Bailey said.

Market volatility could be

reinforced by some derivative users not being fully ready to trade with EU counterparties or on EU or EU-recognised trading venues, the BoE said.

“Financial institutions should continue taking measures to minimise disruption,” it said.

The central bank said the counter-cyclical capital buffer - extra money banks must set aside during economic good times - would be held at zero until at least the last quarter of 2021.

Banks would not need to im-plement any future change until

the end of 2022, and should use this flexibility to underpin lend-ing to the rest of the economy, the Bank of England (BoE) said.

On Thursday, the BoE an-nounced it would allow banks to restart paying dividends and executive bonuses.

“Our message today is that the financial system has the resilience to go on doing that,” Bailey said.

Banks would face challenges next year from higher unem-ployment and business insol-vencies but were well prepared, the BoE said.

The BoE forecast last month that Britain’s economy would shrink by 11% this year as a result of the pandemic and

grow by 7.25% in 2021, taking until the first quarter of 2022 to return to its pre-crisis size.

Two-wheeler sales, con-sidered an indicator of the health of the rural economy, rose more

than 13pc to 16,00,379, data showed.

Wholesale sales for the April-November period, however, fell more than 20% from a year ago,

Cuba will unify its two currencies as of January 1: presidentAFP | Havana

Cuba will unify its two cur-rencies, the Cuban peso and

convertible peso, as of January 1, ending a unique system that has existed for nearly three decades, President Miguel Diaz-Canel said.

“We consider the conditions met to announce the start of this reform beginning January 1, 2021, with a single exchange rate of 24 Cuban pesos for one dollar,” Diaz-Canel said on tel-evision, along-side Raul Castro, the country’s former president and Communist Party leader.

The reform, which had been announced years ago and re-peatedly postponed, is intended to make the Cuban economy more accessible to foreign in-vestors at a time when the coro-navirus pandemic has cut off

much-needed tourism dollars. The move “will place the

country in a better condition for needed transformations for up-dating our economic model,” he added, but warned it’s not “the magic solution to all problems.”

Diaz-Canel acknowledged

currency reform was “one of the most complex tasks” facing the country, as it is buffeted by headwinds from a strengthening US embargo, the Covid-19 pan-demic, and a global economic crisis.

The move, postponed for years

as authorities waited for the best time to make the change, comes as the Cuban economy is ex-pected to contract by 8 percent this year, according to the UN’s Economic Commission for Latin America.

Lacking foreign currency, the island has had to restrict its im-ports, aggravating shortages and

queues in front of supermarkets.“Indeed, this is not the best

economic and political con-text, the economic conditions are very similar to those of the early 1990s, after the fall of the Soviet Union,” said Pavel Vidal, a Cuban economist at Javeriana University in Columbia.

“But it is for this very reason that it is necessary to advance more deeply and quickly with the re-forms,” he said.

The reform will eliminate the convertible peso, or CUC, cre-ated in 1994 and linked to the dollar.

Only the Cuban peso, or CUP, will remain, which is worth 24 times less.

The currency reform comes after the island reintroduced the dollar in October 2019, with appliance and food stores which only accept that currency.

Ethiopia returns refugees who fled Tigray fighting, to alarmGovernment says it is now safe to bring back refugees who fled month-long fighting to the northern region’s camps

• UN calls the move ‘disturbing’

AP | Addis Ababa

In a development the United Nations calls “disturbing,” Ethiopia yesterday said it

is returning thousands of ref-ugees who ran from camps in its Tigray region as war swept through, putting them on buses back to the border area with Eritrea, the country the refugees originally fled.

The news came as the United States said it believes Eritrean troops are active in Ethiopia, which it called a “grave devel-opment.”

“We are aware of credible reports of Eritrean military in-volvement in Tigray,” a State Department spokesperson said in an email. “We urge that any such troops be withdrawn im-mediately.”

Ethiopia’s government said its completed military offensive against the now-fugitive Tigray regional government “was not a direct threat” to the 96,000 “misinformed” Eritrean refu-gees — even as international aid groups said four of their staffers had been killed, at least one in a refugee camp there.

The United Nations refugee chief recently warned that the

reported targeting of Eritrean refugees, if confirmed, “would be major violations of interna-tional norms.” Tigray residents who fled into Sudan have as-serted that gunfire came from the direction of Eritrea as the conflict began.

UN Secretary-General An-tonio Guterres this week said Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, last year’s Nobel Peace Prize winner, had “guaranteed to me that (Eritrean forces) have not entered Tigrayan territory.”

Eritrea, described by rights groups as one of the world’s most repressive countries, has remained almost silent on the Tigray conflict and is a bitter

enemy of the fugitive Tigray government.

“We received alarming mes-sages from Eritreans living abroad and when we looked into them, ascertained that several hundred refugees had been put on buses this morning to be re-turned to the Tigray region,” the UN refugee agency said yester-day. “We had not been informed in advance by the government.”

Given the trauma the refugees say they witnessed in Tigray, they should be protected out-side the region, the agency said. It also noted that the refugee camps have had no access to services and supplies for more than a month.

Aid groups say thousands of the Eritrean refugees have fled to Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Aba-ba, and the Tigray capital, Me-kele. Ethiopia’s government said their “unregulated movement” makes it difficult to ensure their security and provide them with aid.

Their camps are now stable and under Ethiopia’s “full con-trol,” the statement said, adding that “transportation of food to the camps is under way.”

But communications and transport links to Tigray remain so challenging that the Interna-tional Rescue Committee said it was still trying to confirm the details around the killing of an employee in the Hitsats refugee camp in Shire town, the base of humanitarian operations for the refugee camps.

Five key genes linked to severe COVID-19 found, suggesting drug targets

Reuters | London

Five key genes are linked with the most severe

form of COVID-19, scientists said yesterday, in research that also pointed to several existing drugs that could be repurposed to treat peo-ple who risk getting criti-cally ill with the pandemic disease.

Researchers who studied the DNA of 2,700 COVID-19 patients in 208 intensive care units across Britain found that five genes in-volving in two molecular processes - antiviral immu-nity and lung inflammation - were central to many se-vere cases.

“Our results immediate-ly highlight which drugs should be at the top of the list for clinical testing,” said Kenneth Baillie, an academ-ic consultant in critical care medicine at Edinburgh Uni-versity who co-led the re-search.

The genes - called IF-NAR2, TYK2, OAS1, DPP9 and CCR2 – partially explain why some people be-come desperately sick with COV-ID-19, while others are not affected, Baillie said.

The findings, published in the journal Nature, should help scientists speed up the search for potential drugs for COVID-19 by conducting clinical trials of medicines that target specific antivi-ral and anti-inflammatory pathways.

AstraZeneca to use part of Russian Covid vaccine in trialsAstraZeneca will start clinical trials to test a combination of its experimental COVID-19 vaccine with Russia’s Sputnik V shot aimed at boosting immunity

• Trials will start by the end of the year and Russia wants to jointly produce the new vaccine if it is proven to be effective

Reuters | Washington

Pharmaceutical giant Astra-Zeneca’s Russian branch said yesterday it would use

part of Russia’s homemade Sput-nik V vaccine in further clinical trials, a major sign of recognition for a jab that has been viewed with scepticism by the West.

Russia was one of the first coun-tries to announce the develop-ment of a coronavirus vaccine, which it named Sputnik V after the Soviet era satellite.

While the jab is yet to complete its third and final phase of test-ing involving some 40,000 vol-unteers, its developers have said that interim trial results showed 95 percent efficacy.

“Today we announce a clin-ical trial programme to assess the safety and immunogenici-ty of a combination of AZD1222, developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University, and Sputnik V, developed by Russian Gamaleya Research institute,” AstraZeneca said in a statement published on its website in English and Russian yesterday.

The pharmaceutical company said that adults aged 18 and over will be enrolled in the trials, ex-pected to start before the end of

the year. While the Sputnik V jab uses

human adenovirus vectors, AZD1222 relies on adenovirus from chimpanzees. Both are ad-ministered in two doses.

Russia’s Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), which was involved in the development of Sputnik V, said in its own statement yes-terday that on November 23 it offered AstraZeneca “to use one of the two vectors of the Sputnik V vaccine in additional clinical trials of its own vaccine”.

Moscow announced the reg-istration of Sputnik V back in August, after it had completed the second phase of trials on un-der 100 volunteers, raising con-cerns from scientists at home and abroad.

Analysts viewed the fast-track registration and the early launch of mass vaccination as an effort for Russia to bolster its geopoliti-cal influence.

Several Russian allies -- includ-ing India, Venezuela and Belarus -- have said they would take part in clinical trials for the jab, while Kremlin-friendly governments have pre-ordered more than a billion doses of Sputnik V.

Ignoring accusations by Britain of Russian-linked hackers target-ing vaccine research, Moscow has said it is open to cooperation with Western countries.

The vaccine’s developers said it will be available on international markets for less than $10 (8.40 eu-ros) per dose -- and that it can be stored at between two and eight degrees Celsius (between 35.6 and 46.4 degrees Fahrenheit) instead of the temperatures far below freezing required for some other vaccines.

‘Unique example of cooperation’ In its statement yesterday, As-

traZeneca said that “combina-tions of different COVID-19 vac-

cines may be an important step in generating wider protection through a stronger immune re-sponse and better accessibility.”

The British-Swedish drugmak-er added that cooperation with the Gamaleya Research Institute is “important to explore the po-tential of vaccine combinations unlocking synergies in protection and accessibility through a port-folio approach.”

The pharmaceutical giant had earlier said that its vaccine was on average 70 percent effective.

Head of RDIF Kirill Dmitriyev said yesterday that the collabora-tion will be a “unique example of co-operation between scientists from different countries in jointly fighting coronavirus”.

While Russia’s second wave has continued to surge in recent weeks, the country has refrained from reimposing a strict nation-wide lockdown as it did in the spring and pinned its hopes on mass vaccination.

South Korean filmmaker Kim Ki-duk dies from COVID-19 complicationsReuters | Seoul

South Korean filmmaker Kim Ki-duk, a controversial fig-

ure both for his work and in his personal life, died in Latvia from coronavirus complications yes-terday, a Latvian film official said.

Kim, who had won awards at the Venice, Cannes and Berlin film festivals, had been staying

in the Latvian capital Riga, in a private capacity after travelling to neighbouring Estonia for work, according to Dita Rietuma, direc-tor of Latvia’s state National Film Centre.

Kim, 59, died at a hospital in Riga, Rietuma told Reuters, citing the director’s private secretary.

Latvian media Delfi first report-ed Kim’s death, referring to Vitaly Mansky, a Russian documentary film director who reportedly was working with Kim.

Kim earned global praise as a regular at international festivals but also faced criticism especial-

ly over his portrayals of women, including in the ultra-violent “Pi-eta”. That film won the Golden Lion prize at the Venice Film Fes-tival in 2012.

His reputation was also dam-aged by several accusations of rape and sexual harassment by a series of actresses amid the global #MeToo movement.

Kim had not directly respond-ed to those claims, but appealed in November after losing a law-suit he pursued against one of the actresses and a local TV network that broadcast her accusations.

Honored to be named @TIME’s Person

of the Year with Pres-ident-elect @JoeBid-en. We’re at a moment where we’re being con-fronted by multiple cri-ses that have converged. We have a lot we need to handle in the days ahead but I know together we can get it done.

@KamalaHarris

I’m honored to be Per-son of the Year with @

KamalaHarris and grate-ful to be on this list with so many extraordinary folks. From front line workers to racial jus-tice organizers, Ameri-cans met this year with strength, fortitude, and an unflinching belief in a brighter tomorrow.

@JoeBiden

Th e i n t e r n a t i o n a l community must not

reward Iranian nucle-ar gamesmanship. The steps passed by Iran’s Majles, if implemented, would bring Iran to the dangerous 20% uranium enrichment level with no credible rationale for any peaceful purpose.

@SecPompeo

Now it turns out that the Democrats want

Hezbollah member sentenced to life for Hariri murderAFP | London

An international court sentenced a fugitive

Hezbollah member yester-day to five life jail terms for the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Rafic Hariri and 21 other people.

Salim Ayyash, 57, was found guilty in absentia of murder and terrorism on August 18 by the Nether-lands-based Special Tribu-nal for Lebanon over the huge suicide bombing that killed the Sunni billionaire politician and injured 226 others.

Ayyash remains on the run, with Hassan Nasrallah, the head of the Shiite Hez-bollah movement, refusing to hand him over or to rec-ognise the UN-backed court.

“Mr Ayyash participated in an act of terrorism that caused mass murder,” chief Judge David Re said as he announced the sentence.

Taylor Swift ‘just kept writing’ for second surprise album of 2020Reuters | Los Angeles

Taylor Swift announced the arrival of a second complete surprise album

in five months, saying “we just couldn’t stop writing songs.”

Swift told her 141 million followers on Instagram that the album called “Evermore” would be released at midnight ET (0500 GMT) on Thursday, along with a music video for the first single “Willow.”

Swift described the 15-track album as a “sister record” to “Folklore,” which she produced entirely during the coronavirus lockdowns and released unex-pectedly in July.

“Folklore,” a change of style that showed an indie folk sen-sibility, earned Swift some of the best reviews of her career as well as triggering six Grammy nominations, including for the coveted album of the year.

“To put it plainly, we just couldn’t stop writing songs,”

Swift wrote on Thursday.“I loved the escapism I found

in these imaginary/not imagi-nary tales. I loved the ways you welcomed the dreamscapes and tragedies and epic tales of love lost and found into your lives. So I just kept writing them,” she added.

The singer-songwriter said the “Evermore” team again in-cluded alternative artist Bon Iver and Aaron Dessner, gui-tarist with indie rock band The National.

The mysterious William Bow-

e r y, w h o Swift last m o n t h r e -vealed w a s a pseudo -nym for her Brit-i s h a c t o r b o y f r i e n d Joe Alwyn, is also credited as a co-writ-er on the new album.

When Gwyneth Paltrow’s ‘shine of acting wore off’IANS | Los Angeles

Actress Gwyneth Pal-trow says she was in

her mid-twenties when she realised she did not love acting that much.

The realisation came soon after she won an Oscar for “Shakespeare In Love”.

“I sort of felt like, well, now who am I supposed to be? Like, what am I, what am I driving to-wards?” she said during an appearance on “Quar-antined With Bruce”, re-ports people.com.

Now 45, Paltrow said that “part of the the shine of acting wore off” due to the “intense public scrutiny” of being a young actress in Hol-lywood.

“Being a kid who’s like living every breakup on every headline, like being crit icised for everything you do say and wear,” Paltrow con-tinued.

“And also, it’s so tran-sitory, you’re always all over. It’s hard to plant roots. Like I’m such a

homebody, you know me, I like to be with my old friends and cook and squeeze my kids. Like I don’t want to be alone in a hotel room in Buda-pest for six weeks. Like, it’s just not who I am,” she said.

She also went on to talk about the toll that producer Harvey Weinstein took on her. He was her boss as the president of Miramax for sever-al years, including

when she won the Best Actress Oscar in 1999 for “Shakespeare In Love”. They also previously worked together on the 1996 film “Emma”.

“If you compound those things with the fact that like, you know, to be totally candid, I had a really rough boss for most of my movie career at Miramax,” she said of the disgraced mo-gul, who she has accused of sexual harassment.

The star spoke with People magazine recently and said that she’s enjoying the extra family time.

“Being around little ones during the pandemic was such

a saving grace because they would just be bouncing around the house, and your job is to protect them from what is hap-pening and make sure their life remains joyful,” she explained.

In fact, Blunt said that she and her “A Quiet Place” co-star husband have found their chil-dren’s attitudes to be “a pretty great lifeline” for themselves.

The “Into the Woods” star also said that she’s truly appre-

“It’s wonderful when you see them become their own little people,” said the star. “I think they come out the way [they’re meant to].”

Meghan Trainor says she is ‘crushing’ pregnancyIANS | Los Angeles

Singer Meghan Train-or says she has ges-

tational diabetes, but is still crushing preg-nancy. She admitted that she enjoyed be-ing pregnant while in quarantine.

“I am so pregnant,”

she said during an ap-pearance on “The To-night Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”, reports etonline.com.

She added: “It was great not travelling, and if I felt sick, I was like, ‘Well, at least I’m home and doing interviews

like this.’ I was so lucky for that.”

But she had “one bump in the road” with her pregnancy. “I got gestational diabetes, but so many women have it,” she shared.

“It was just the un-knowing. I didn’t know

what it was. It’s like a genetics thing. My mom had it and she didn’t even give me a full warn-ing,” she added.

Mourinho warns table-topping Spurs as tough Christmas schedule loomsAFP | London

Jose Mourinho has warned his Tottenham players they

face a searching test of their Premier League title creden-tials over the gruelling Christ-mas period.

Spurs, top of the table on goal difference, are about to embark on a run of seven fix-tures in 21 days, which could have a huge say in whether they will remain as contend-ers.

They start at Crystal Pal-ace on Sunday before games against Liverpool, Leicester, Wolves, Fulham and Leeds,

with a League Cup quarter-fi-nal at Stoke sandwiched in between.

Mourinho has been used to juggling his squad as they have been in Europa League action and will do so again, but says his star men such as Har-ry Kane and Son Heung-min will have to play most of the matches.

“Now is the accumulation of matches in the Premier League that, to be honest, are more dif-ficult than the Europa League matches because the quality of the teams is higher in the Premier League,” the Portu-guese said.”

Manchester derby ‘best game’ to lift United, says SolskjaerAFP | London

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said the Manchester derby was

the “best game that you can ask for” as Manchester United seek to bounce back from the disap-pointment of their Champions League exit.

United had one foot in the knockout stages after opening wins against Paris Saint-Ger-main and RB Leipzig but Tues-day’s 3-2 defeat away to the German side dumped them out of them out of the competition.

Solskjaer now has to rally the troops for Saturday’s Old Traf-ford clash with City as United look to win just their second home Premier League match of the season.

The Red Devils are sixth in the league after four straight wins, one point ahead of City, who are showing signs of hitting form after a stuttering start to the season.

Solskjaer said yesterday that his players were disappointed by their Champions League exit but must now “move on”.

“It was a tight group decid-ed by fine margins,” he said. “I think you can see that in most of the games. We had a long travel back, so we had a day of recovery on Wednesday.

“Then after that the focus has been good. The focus has just been on this game and the Man-ches-ter derby, which is what you want the players to get onto straightaway.

“That’s probably the best game that you can ask for after such a disappointment because it does stick in your system.”

The issue of Paul Pogba’s fu-ture dominated the build-up to Tuesday’s Champions League match after his agent Mino Raiola said the Frenchman was “unhappy” at the club.

“I speak to my players on a daily basis and Paul’s no differ-

ent to anyone else,” said Solsk-jaer. “For me what was disap-pointing this week was us going out in the Champions League.

“Players want to go through in that and whatever anyone’s representatives say can’t really affect me.”

David de Gea is another Unit-ed player under the spotlight after he was criticised for not doing more to stop Leipzig’s

third goal, leading to calls for England international Dean Henderson to be handed a run in the side.

But Solskjaer backed the Spaniard to bounce back.

“I think David’s a top goal-keeper,” Solskjaer said. “Of course I do and rightly so he’s on lists of being the best goal-keeper in Europe.

“For me, he’s handled criti-cism before, he’s handled set-backs before and he’s a boy, or a man, that we really rely on.”

Solskjaer said Anthony Mar-tial was available after missing the Leipzig game but he had yet to make a decision on fellow forward Edinson Cavani, who was also absent.

‘Things were better before’, Klopp changes his mind on VAR

AFP | London

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said he has changed

his mind over the need for VAR in football and believes the change to using technology to determine the finest of mar-gins has made the game less enjoyable.

The Reds were involved in three lengthy stoppages during a 1-1 draw away to Midtjylland in the Champions League on Wednesday for VAR to check a penalty awarded to the Danish champions and rule out a goal for either side.

“We stop celebrating goals, we wait constantly, we have less than millimetre offside de-cisions. A lot of things are not like they were before, that’s the truth,” said Klopp in his pre-match press conference yesterday ahead of Sunday’s trip to Fulham.

“I said when the idea of VAR first came up I was in favour of it because I thought the right decisions would be nice, if we could have rights decisions.

“I’m not sure we all thought it through properly and how long will it take to get the right decision, how much will it take away from a game we all loved before.”

Liverpool have been in-volved in plenty of VAR con-troversy already this season as Everton goal-keeper Jordan Pickford escaped without see-ing a red card for a horren-dous challenge on Virgil van Dijk, which caused knee liga-ment damage to the talismanic Dutch defender.

Jordan Henderson had a late winner ruled out in the same game for a millimetric offside call, while Andy Robertson conceded a late penalty after a review in a 1-1 draw at Brighton two weeks ago.

“It ’s nothing to do with tight decisions against us, it’s in general. A few things are not like they were before and they were better before. If you change something there should be just improvement and that is for sure not the case and that’s it.”

Managers are paid to handle the pressure, says Guardiola

AFP | London

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said he does

not need to give any advice to under-fire Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on the pressures of management.

The two clubs clash in a der-by on Saturday with big rami-fications for both sides’ hopes of challeng-ing for the Premier League title this season.

However, it is Solskjaer who goes into the game under pres-sure after an early exit from the Champions League after a 3-2 defeat to RB Leipzig on Tuesday.

“We know it,” said Guardi-ola on the speed with which

managers’ jobs are put at risk. “That’s why we get a lot of sal-ary. The important thing is to know the value of Solskjaer is there. There is no doubt about this.”

Solskjaer’s men got the bet-ter of City three times out of four meetings between the clubs last sea-son and for the first time in Guardiola’s time in charge, it is the red half of Manchester who go into a der-by ahead of their local rivals in the table.

United are five points off the top with City a point further back in seventh, but both have a game in hand that could claw them right back into the title race.

‘Failure’ Vettel bids Ferrari farewellAFP | Abu Dhabi

Four-time champion Sebas-tian Vettel hopes to bid fare-

well to Ferrari with a smile on Sunday, but has admitted that his six-year stint in Italy is, ulti-mately, ending in tears of failure.

The 33-year-old German, who joined Ferrari in 2015, offered a searingly-honest and realistic appraisal of his time in Italy, despite winning 14 races, when he admitted his goal had been to claim a fifth title.

That total made him the third most successful driver in the team’s history behind seven-time champion Michael Schumacher, with 72 wins, and Niki Lauda on 15.

But emulating his idol Schu-macher as a Ferrari title-winner had been his target.

“It doesn’t change anything, we’ve still failed,” he told re-porters.

“We had the ambition to win the championship and we didn’t.

“We were up against a very strong team-driver combina-tion, one of the strongest we’ve seen so far, but our goal was to be stronger than that and, in this regard, we failed.

“There’s a lot of reasons why, but in the big picture, I think it’s not unfair. It’s just the truth.

Nothing wrong with saying it out loud.”

He rejected a suggestion that the pressures of expectation from the ‘tifosi’ had contributed to the team’s failings.

“The pressure in Italy? The fans and so on, yes, it is there, but ultimately I always set the highest sort of expectations on myself and I think I was the first and best judge if I didn’t achieve them,” he added.

“So, rest assured, when I stuffed the car in the gravel in Germany [2018], I wasn’t happy before the ‘tifosi’ weren’t hap-py…

Vettel will join Racing Point,

re-branded as Aston Martin next year, and believes he has gained from his Ferrari expe-riences.

“Everything that happened has happened for a reason. The main thing on my side is to make sure that I learned from it and I think I have grown with it.

“Overall, I feel much more comfortable, or in a better place now, than all those years ago, but cer-tainly it hasn’t always been easy and straightforward.”

Vettel’s move to the Silver-stone-based team means Mex-ican Sergio Perez, who claimed his maid-en F1 win at last Sun-day’s Sakhir Grand Prix, faces

an uncertain future. His only hope for a seat next

season is with Red Bull if they decide not to retain Alex Albon.

“I have some good options for ’22,” said Perez. “So, if I have to stop, it’s not a disaster.”

Others on the move after Sunday’s finale include Daniel Ricciardo, who switches teams from Renault to McLaren, and Carlos Sainz who leaves McLar-en to replace Vettel at Ferrari.

Haas are changing both drivers. Kevin Magnussen is out after Sunday following al-ready-departed Romain Gros-jean, who has returned home after his amazing escape from a high-speed fireball crash at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Daniil Kvyat is also expect-ed to be leaving Alpha Tauri where Japanese Yuki Tsunoda is poised to replace him in the Honda-powered outfit.

Hamilton ‘super-excited’ to be back

AFP | Abu Dhabi

A happy Lewis Hamilton said he was ‘super-excit-

ed’ to be back in action yester-day after he was second-fastest for Mercedes behind his team-mate Valtteri Bottas in practice for this weekend’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The seven-time champion, who missed last weekend’s action-packed Sakhir Grand Prix due to a bout of Covid-19, admitted he needed a few laps to settle in again.

“I was very happy and grate-ful to be back out there and to finish the season feeling strong,” he said.

“I felt super-excited like it was my first day back at school.

“It took a while in the first session to get used to it again, but the second was better so not too bad overall… We got most of our stuff done.”

He added that it had been a “bit of a messy day with a lot going on, but we came through it like we always do.”

Asked by Sky Sports F1 about his reaction to seeing fellow-Briton George Rus-sell in his car last weekend,

Hamilton said he had been impressed.

“I think George did an amaz-ing job as everyone knows,” he said.

“He was at home in the car. For me, it was definitely odd because I’ve never missed a race in my 27 years of racing.

“One day, I’ll write a book about it, but for now I’ll leave it at that!”

He said he felt no need to im-press this weekend, but want-ed to enjoy the season-closing event.

“I don’t think I need to do any more than I have done this year,” he said.

Bottas back on top ahead of Hamilton as Mercedes ruleLewis Hamilton was beaten to top spot by Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas on his return to action in Abu Dhabi

• Max Verstappen topped the opening practice

AFP | Abu Dhabi

Valtteri Bottas bounced back to top the times ahead of his returning

Mercedes team-mate and sev-en-time champion Lewis Ham-ilton in yesterday’s busy second free practice for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The Finn, embarrassed by the superior pace of Hamil-ton’s stand-in George Russell, ‘borrowed’ from Williams, at last weekend’s Sakhir Grand Prix, reacted with a determined showing at the Yas Marina Cir-cuit.

Bottas clocked a best lap in 1min 36.276sec to outpace Ham-ilton, back after a bout of Cov-id-19 that forced him to miss an F1 race for the first time, by 0.203 seconds. For Bottas, it was a return to his familiar role as ‘fastest on Friday’.

Max Verstappen was third for Red Bull, seven-tenths adrift, at the end of a session that began and finished with tyre-testing and was also interrupted by a red-flag period after Kimi Rai-kkonen’s Alfa Romeo’s Ferrari engine burst into flames.

His under-pressure Red Bull

team-mate Alex Albon was fourth ahead of Lando Norris of McLaren, Renault’s Esteban Ocon, Sergio Perez of Racing Point and Charles Leclerc of Ferrari.

Daniel Ricciardo was ninth for Renault ahead of Lance Stroll in the second Racing Point while Rus-sell, last weekend’s ‘heartbreak hero’, ended the session in the Williams pit after power problems.

After warm, dry and sunlit day, the second ‘twilight’ ses-sion began in similar conditions as the sun went down, the driv-ers ventured out to test Pirelli’s latest prototype tyres on which everyone had to complete eight timed laps.

Initially, the two Mercedes

men were fastest by a full sec-ond before Hamilton was called in for a steering wheel swap. The testing over, he resumed on mediums and went top in 1:36.479. Bottas then beat him by two-tenths.

When they switched to softs, Hamilton’s first flying lap – in 1:36.097 – was deleted for run-ning wide at Turn 21. Bottas’ lap ended prematurely with a twitchy exit from Turn One where Gasly spun.

With 38 minutes remaining, it was teams in order with the two Mercedes ahead of the two Red Bulls and Racing Point’s Sergio Perez, who will start Sunday’s race from the back of the grid after collecting a penalty for taking a new engine.

Haas’s Kevin Magnussen joined Formula One’s latest race winner with a penalty after fit-ting a new electronics package.

At the sharp end, Verstappen showed his pace with the fastest first sector time before backing off when he caught Perez on a long run. His next lap was de-leted for exceeding track lim-its at Turn 21. He stayed third, one-tenth down on the ‘black arrows’.

In the closing minutes, two cars betrayed the age of their engines with George Russell’s power-unit issuing smoke and then Kimi Raikkonen’s bursting into flames.

The Briton managed to nurse his Williams to the pits, but the 41-year-old Finn pulled up at Turn Seven where he took a marshal’s extinguisher to put out the fire.
