A Silvering Glance

A great way of enhancing your

eyes in a simple manner is by

using a touch of silver or ivory eye-

shadow around the inner corner.

Using a light, iridescent shade

for the inner corners really opens

up your eyes and makes them

stand out. You can even make the

application

more defined

and angular,

for an edgy

look, or

blend it out

for a natural

feel. Play

with the

shape of your

eye shadow;

stay close to

the lash-line

for a stronger look or make the

angle bigger, by covering parts of

the lids, to open up your eyes and

make them big. Use in combination

with white eye-liner or pencil on

the inner, under-eye lash-line for

maximal effect. One of our favorite

picks is the NYX Silver Eye/Eyeliner

Pencil, which deposits a nice dark

silver color that looks really striking

and brightens up your eye area

effortlessly!

TEACHER FROM EGYPT DIES

Second Egyptian teacher to die in one week

Foreign Ministry holds national consultation meet

Muhannad Mansour/[email protected]

For the second time in one week, another Egyptian

public school teacher died in Muharraq Governorate yesterday. Ahmed Abdulmalik, an Arabic language teacher in Arad Elementary and Intermediate Boys’ School, Arad died of heart attack within the first week of school reopening.

A source from the school, confirmed that the deceased had cardiac problems and underwent a catheterisation surgery in Egypt during the recent summer holidays (June-August).

It’s said that the cardiac complications reoccurred once Abdulmalik arrived in Bahrain and it prevented him from

resuming his duties. “It seems the surgery in Egypt wasn’t successful, as the coagulation in his pulmonary artery remained. He wasn’t feeling well when he arrived in Bahrain by the end of last month.

He was immediately admitted to King Hamad University Hospital for treatment.

He was in the Intensive Care Unit for almost a week, where he breathed his last,” the source added.

The deceased will be soon flown back to his hometown in Al Wadi Al Jadid (New Valley) Governorate in Egypt, where he will be buried. Condolences and prayers of the dead were offered at Kanoo Mosque in Muharraq yesterday.

A co-worker informed that the deceased was survived by

his pregnant wife and three daughters. As reported on Wednesday, an Egyptian teacher, Ala Radhwan, died of heart failure in Omar bin Al Khattab Elementary and Intermediate Boys’ School in Muharraq on the first day of the school (Sunday).

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a national

consultation meeting yesterday in preparation of the third cycle of the UN’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR), during which the Kingdom of Bahrain is expected to submit a national report outlining its human rights framework, policies and initiatives before the end of next year.

The meeting was attended by members of the inter-governmental High Coordinating Committee for Human Rights (HCC), representatives of the Human Rights Committees of Council of Representatives and Shura Council, representatives of the judiciary, as well as

representatives of several other institutions, and civil society organizations. Attending entities presented their input on the status of implementation of recommendations that Bahrain received in the last cycle of the UPR.

The UPR mechanism was established by United Nations General Assembly resolution 60/251 with the aim of improving human rights situation in all UN member nations. This mechanism requires members to submit a report to the Human Rights Council once every four years.

The report is considered an opportunity for countries to showcase all measures undertaken to improve the human rights and highlight challenges countries face

in that context. In the UPR process, countries undergoing the UPR process receive recommendations from any of the UN member states, which they could either accept or reject in line with their national interests.

The Kingdom of Bahrain was one of the first countries to ever undergo the UPR process after it was chosen by draw in 2007. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with assistance from United Nations Development Programme, prepared Bahrain’s report that was submitted in February 2008.

In the second cycle of the UPR in 2012, Bahrain accepted almost all of the recommendations it received and submitted a voluntary interim report in 2014.

A student in his twenties was caught for promoting and

spying in favour of a terrorist group, according to court files. The Bahraini student, aged 18, reportedly has a brother whose nationality was stripped recently on grounds of being part of a terrorist group in the

traveled to Yemen in order to join the group, and the 18-year-old was captured later in possession of a memory stick containing documents related to Al Qaeda.

But the latter told prosecutors that the documents belong to his

Video goes viral as activists call for action against abusers of pets

DOGFIGHT ORGANISERS GET ANIMAL ACTIVISTS’ GOAT DT News [email protected]

Manama

Animal activists have heavily come down on

pet abusers after two video clippings of dogfighting went

viral on social media. A case has already been filed at Isa Town police station, requesting authorities to initiate action against the dogfight organisers.

The incident came to light after a social media user posted a photograph of a pit bull,

stating that the dog is for sale. The pit bull was skinny and in a poor state.

Immediately, a person contacted the pit bull seller, asking for the price of the dog. The pit bull seller said that he was ready to sell it for BD40. In the meantime, the pit bull seller invited the prospective buyer to attend dogfights, stating that he had been organising such fights since a long time.

The pit bull seller also sent some of the video clippings of previous dogfights organised by him to the prospective buyer via WhatsApp.

The prospective buyer

immediately forwarded the video to an animal activist, who

later posted them on social media.

According to the animal activist, the video might have been taken long back. “But the pit bull, which was offered for BD40, definitely had been used for dogfight as a dog found in the dogfight video resembles the pit bull. He is selling the pit bull since it is unable to participate in fights anymore,” the animal activist commented.

Though the exact location where the video had been recorded is not known, the animal activist added that the dogfight incident might have taken place in Jurdab.

According to sources, the case against the dogfight organiser was filed on Tuesday late night. A CD of dogfight videos was submitted yesterday.

KHK MMA team new recruit Eldar Eldarov will

represent the team for the first time in a competition this weekend. The fighter will be taking part in Gladiator Fighting Championship (GFC) in Kuwait on Friday to face American professional Tanner Saraceno.

Talking about his preparations, Eldarov said, “In MMA a lot of it’s about technique, everyday we try to mix it. MMA is something I do every day. I know the kind of shape I am in and I am ready.”

“I don’t think too much about this. I just want to get inside the cage and finish the fight in the first round. What I say kill yourself in training and you will not be killed in a fight. I am ready for everything. My strategy is to stop him and get him with hard punches,” he exuded confidence.

Eight professionals and 14

amateur fighters had recently signed for the newly formed MMA team. Apart from Eldarov notable names such as Alexandro ‘Extremo’ Soto, Islam Makhachev, Khabib ‘The

NEW GIZMO IN COPS’ CARS: OFFICIAL SCOTCHES RUMOURS

Traffic Directorate denies installing any new device to measure speed

Probe announced on question paper leak

Mohammed Zafran/[email protected]

Manama

Rumours being circulated online regarding a traffic

police car apparently equipped with a new technology is false, a senior official at the Traffic Directorate has confirmed yesterday.

A picture of a police car, which was rumoured to have a built-in equipment to monitor and capture the details of

speeding cars, was circulated online last month. Social media users claimed that the device was installed on the front left on the car and it would be able to monitor the speed of cars within its 500-meter radius.

In the picture being circulated, a red circle was highlighting a device on the body of the car. The object was claimed to be a camera device that would work similar to a radar gun used to measure the speed of moving objects. However, the

claims were ruled out by the Traffic Culture Director in the

General Directorate of Traffic Major Osama Bahar. He said that the circled object was only a setting to fix a flag. “The object can hold a flag, that model cars have such a feature,” he told DT News.

He stressed that the Traffic Police is focusing on reducing the number of accidents and not the number of violations caught. “Our objective is to save lives, not to catch violations in order to meet any sort of selfish objectives. Some people

like to make it seem like we are just trying to catch violations. That is not an honest portrayal. We do not benefit from catching violations, we are doing it to keep the roads safer. So to say we are taking new technology or measures to catch violations is a wrong statement, rather it should be said that we are trying to reduce accidents,” he added.

JAIL TERM UPHELD IN ASSAULT CASEBahraini man accused of attacking his girlfriend

DT News NetworkManama

The High Criminal Court has upheld the initial sentence

handed out earlier to a 23-year-old Bahraini man who physically attacked his girlfriend. The latter, aged 24, is said to have incurred the anger of her boyfriend when she went to visit him while he was staying in a chalet in Amwaj Island to discuss his relationship with another woman who was working with him.

“I spotted her courting him, so I went to him and I knocked the door of the chalet as I wanted answers from him,” she told prosecutors.

But the defendant reportedly knocked the woman down before dragging her by her hair and kicked her, according to court files. She was eventually rescued by security guards in the island, who rushed there

hearing her screams. However, the defendant gave another version of the incident.

He said that the 24-year-old woman came to him, and he shouted at her to leave.

“She insisted to stay there. So I pushed her towards her car, and when she opened the door, she hit her face. She screamed and she fell down to the ground,” he said. “Security guards flocked and asked me if we needed an

ambulance but I took her to hospital by myself,” he added.

The defendant, however, was given one month in jail, which was also upheld by the High Criminal Appeals Court.

It is worth to note that the victim had earlier withdrawn the case, but later told that court that she wanted to continue because “the defendant didn’t ask about her when he was released on bail”.

Praveesh said that recently Thomas had taken passport from the employer to apply for a new passport for his newborn baby. “Within a few days, the employer entered the house of Thomas and asked his passport back. When Thomas informed him that the passport was with the Indian Embassy, the employer bashed up Thomas in front of his wife,” he said. “Later he took Thomas to the labourers’ accommodation and beat him up again in front of other colleagues.”

Two days ago, Thomas and Jitesh were subjected to torture by the employer as they

resisted to do overtime work, the employees alleged.

Perturbed by regular harassment, they immediately

contacted social worker Salam Mambatumoola. Later they filed the case with the help of Salam.

The social worker informed that the victims would approach Indian Embassy, seeking help to fight their case.

‘COORDINATION VITAL TO THWART ‘IS’ THREAT IN SEA’

Two Indian Naval Ships on a goodwill visit to BahrainDT News [email protected]

The terrorist organisation Islamic State (IS) has so

far not engaged in any battle in the sea, as its operations have been limited to the ground. But a good understanding among naval forces of various nations is vital to combat the prospective threat of IS in the sea, said Indian Navy Defence Adviser, Captain N. Hariharan.

Addressing media onboard INS Deepak, which is on a goodwill visit to Bahrain, he said that the naval forces of the world are capable of answering any prospective threat of IS. Goodwill visit of naval ships help different countries to build coordination.

Highlighting the activities

of Indian Naval forces, he told DT News that the forces had played a major role in fighting the pirates of the coast of Somalia.

“The Indian Navy has been active in the Gulf of Aden waters since 2008. The naval forces have independently acted against the pirates when the activities of pirates had

reached their peak. But of late, the pirate activity has come down on the coast of Somalia, due to heavy presence of naval forces of different countries, he said, adding that their forces are ready to respond at any time,” he added.

INS Tabar, which is also on a goodwill visit to Bahrain, was deployed in the Gulf of Aden

waters in 2008. Since then, this naval ship successfully thwarted many hijack efforts of Somali pirates.

Captain Sujit Kumar Chhetri, who commands INS Deepak, said that the navy does not have any boundaries. Similarly, terrorism also has no boundaries.

The threat of terrorism could be addressed successfully with

the cooperation of naval forces of different countries.

He said that the goodwill visit is aimed at seeking out cooperation between the naval forces of Bahrain and India.

“The Middle Eastern region is very important when it comes to ensuring oil and energy security. Therefore, the Indian naval officers would

try to strengthen the existing maritime diplomacy,” he said.

He said that they had a good interaction with the chief of Bahrain Navy, expressing hope that the cooperation would be enhanced in future.

A Silvering Glance

A great way of enhancing your eyes in a simple manner is by using a touch of silver or ivory eye-shadow around the inner corner. Using a light, iridescent shade for the inner corners really opens up your eyes and makes them stand out. You can even make the application more defined and angular, for an edgy look, or blend it out for a natural feel. Play with the shape of your eye shadow; stay close to the lash-line for a stronger look or make the angle bigger, by covering parts of the lids, to open up your eyes and make them big. Use in combination with white eye-liner or pencil on the inner, under-eye lash-line for maximal effect. One of our favorite picks is the NYX Silver Eye/Eyeliner Pencil, which deposits a nice dark silver color that looks really striking and brightens up your eye area effortlessly!

Keep yOur hOLiday gLOw! Talk about blending cultural wear with

a popular culture stance of the 70’s era. Australian Muslim Fashion Designer, Amalina Aman, wanted to showcase the ‘hijab’ look in both a modern and hip way. Impressed by

the movie, Crocodile Dundee when she was young girl, the future fashionista knew she will make it the inspiration behind a collection of hers someday. That someday has come now in the form of her ‘Gypsee Wanderer’ line.

Incorporated with wide-brimmed hats as a nod to the popular 1986 movie, the look is kept feminine and pleasing with a 1970s vibe of billowing skirts and long sleeves, giving modest fashion a limelight it deserves.

‘Modest fashion is a growing market. My main motivator as a fashion designer is I want to show hijab fashion is very modest, but at the same time it’s very stylish’, says Amalina. And while her focus is hijab fashion, the designer said her design could be worn by any woman who wants to feel modest, or alternatively, use the kaftans as a beach cover-up.

Estée Lauder has unveiled a daring new facet of modern

femininity – Modern Muse Le Rouge. The new fragrance is inspired by the glamorous, more provocative side of a Modern Muse. Le Rouge reflects the modern woman who is confident and daring. She never goes unnoticed and it’s all about her signature color of red – which embodies her style, attitude and undeniably powerful effect.

A Fruity Floral Oriental scent, Modern Muse Le Rouge is a contrast of rich roses awakened by ripe fruits with a velvet cream accord that captures the drama of this muse’s personality. The innovative “dual-impression” fragrance structure allows women to experience the fragrance through two contrasting accords:l Ripened Roses Accord: This facet of the fragrance captures the undeniable boldness of the Le Rouge woman and the color. Juicy fruitiness of Bourgeon de

Cassis and Raspberry, contrasted with vibrant Pink Pepper and Saffron blends with the floral richness of Bulgarian Rose and the petally freshness of Rose Centifolia. l Velvet Cream Accord: Her provocative sense of style and dramatic presence are expressed through an addictive blend of full-bodied Madagascar Vanilla and the textural muskiness of Ambrette, refined with earthy, seductive Vetiver and Patchouli – and freshened with the lush femininity of Magnolia Flower and Jasmine.

Elements of glamour and sophistication are threaded throughout the Modern Muse Le Rouge design. A strong, tall luxurious glass bottle with soft rounded sides, with a show-stopping red, spray-through cap that adorns the casing. The cap is inspired by the iconic bow on Estée Lauder’s first fragrance, Youth Dew. It is available at Estée Lauder counters

Dare & Inspire We at Body Line like to remain on our toes when it comes to the latest beauty trends. What designer Cara Delevingne

wore, what hair-do Charlize Theron is supporting and what lipstick shade was Amal Clooney donning at a recent event- yep, it’s all that and a lot more that makes fashion, an ever-growing and developing industry.

Styles keep on getting revamped; looks are continuously upgraded and amidst all this, we caught sight of a new vogue mania called ‘strobing’. Celebrities, beauty bloggers and Bahraini fashionistas have been sharing videos and tweets, of a technique that is easier than contouring to give a ‘wow’ effect to a person’s face.

Instead of rounding up your best shading hues, a person focuses exclusively on highlighter, applied where light would naturally hit your face (so, your cheekbones, brow bones, the center of your forehead, down your nose, and on your chin.) Dabbing on these soft, shimmery shades will make your complexion look radiant, fresh, and healthy while giving you an ethereal oomph that is sure to turn heads.

Adieu Contour

Hello ‘Strobe’

FACE:

Apply Extra Illuminating Moisture Balm or Extra Repair Moisturizing Balm beneath your foundation or tinted moisturizer to instantly refresh and give skin a subtle glow. After applying your face makeup, tap Extra Soothing Balm along the cheekbones, nose and chin.

Bobbi Brown Strobing techniques:

CHEEKS:Combining the warmth of

bronzer and radiance of highlighter, Brightening Brick is perfect for a glow-y day look. Just blend over the highest part of the cheekbones and lightly dust forehead, bridge of nose and chin to catch the light.

EYES:To highlight eyes, choose

a light shade of shadow that complements your skin tone and apply it on the brow bones and at the inner corners of the eyes. Try Long-Wear Cream Shadow Stick in a shimmery shade like Goldstone or Sunlight Gold for day. For nighttime, you can intensify the effect with a shadow that has a higher level of shimmer.

Allured –Beauty Bits & Care With AlAnood Al Khalifa Owner of Gloss Salon and Spa.

TAminG Of The frizzeSOne of the perks of being a salon owner is that I never

have to brush my own hair. It may sound silly but my curly hair usually frizzes and creates static when I brush it myself.

For years, I got away with washing and blow-drying my hair just in the salon. I sometimes ran out of shampoo and conditioner at home and hardly even noticed. When I came across the posh Mason Pearson brush, I thought maybe this would be the solution. If I invested in a fancy looking brush that would complete the decoration of my vanity table, maybe seeing such a beautiful brush would make me get into the habit of brushing my own hair, no salon required.

There are four sizes to choose from including large, medium, handy and pocket. The brushes are also available in five colours: black, white, pink, blue and light wood. The collection also offers three different pads including all boar bristles, all nylon bristles and a combination of boar and nylon bristles. I went with the medium sized brush with all boar and nylon bristles in a light wood finish. The mix of boar and nylon bristles is made for thicker and curlier hair.

The brush comes in a beautiful cardboard box with a brush cleaner. I started using the brush at night to ensure my hair was tame by the morning. To my surprise, the brush didn’t cause my hair to frizz and even added some shine. I found myself reaching for the brush both nights and mornings.

One time while I was travelling I decided not to take my Mason Pearson brush for fear of losing it. I found I couldn’t handle not brushing my hair anymore. It is quite funny and ironic that the girl who once had a fear of brushing her own hair now couldn’t live without her own brush. The brush is made to massage and stimulate the scalp as well as provide an effective brushing technique. The plastic handle gives the brush a comfortable grip.

So now, not only does my vanity table look nice, but so does my hair! My Mason Pearson brush proved to be worth every penny.

You can find Mason Pearson online from www.amazon.co.uk

For as long as we can remember, washing hair has always been

according to a fixed regime- it’s always shampoo then apply the conditioner. Conditioning our hair is as important as shampooing, in fact those who don’t, have known to experience a lackluster effect. It’s like going to a restaurant, ordering the main dish and not concluding a fine dining experience with a dessert- maybe a ‘molten lava cake’ or a ‘crème bruelle’ …anyway before getting completely side-tracked, we move back to the main topic.

Many hair enthusiasts have picked on the advice of the famed Philip Kingsley trichologist ‘Liz Phillips’, who brings a whole new edge to the art of washing your tresses. The new fad defines that a person can actually push more moisture into their locks through the pre-shampoo. “Deeply conditioning the hair before you shower and shampoo provides extra hydration, not weight, which makes the hair bouncier and shinier”, the specialist has said.

Many followers who have applied the mechanism have shared testimonials on their social media accounts as to how it really gives the hair a silky and softer, besides a voluminous look that stays in for more than a few hours as in the case of the traditional sense of washing then conditioning.

Heard of tHe ‘reverse-Hair WasHing’ trend?

A New Fad - Conditioner before Shampoo- will you give it a shot

Liz’s advice: d Condition before Shampood Simply wet or dampen the hair to open the cuticled Apply conditioner to the mid lengths and ends.d Take 30 minutes to an hour to let the product really sink in. d Once in the shower, shampoo as usual, and feel free to lather twice if needed. d Doing this twice a week or as an intensive treatment when needed will benefit the overall health and vitality of the hair.

However, the band is the latest in a string of artists who have been banned from China for appearing to show support to the Dalai Lama or Tibetan independence. According to the Financial Times, the Communist Party’s Culture Ministry had learned that Bon Jovi had performed in front of a video backdrop featuring the Tibetan spiritual leader during a concert in 2010.

Björk was banned from the country for life when she chanted “Tibet, Tibet” during a concert in Shanghai in 2008. And Maroon 5, who were also due to perform in China this month, were pulled after a band member tweeted happy birthday to the Dalai Lama in July. Concert organizers were trying to get officials to change their minds but said chances were slim.

It’s been as quiet as a scientifically-accurate version of space for Sandra Bullock since her Oscar-nominated

turn in Gravity. But she’s chosen to wisely continue her non-rom-com string of roles with political satire Our Brand Is Crisis.

The trailer for the film, based on a 2005 documentary of the same name, has now arrived giving us a look at a grounded Bullock as a spin doctor tasked with a difficult battle in Bolivia. She’s up against a rival, played by Billy Bob Thornton, and a politically unstable climate. And a suicidal llama.

The film comes from David Gordon Green whose eccentric career has taken in everything from lo-fi indies like George Washington to stoner comedies such as Pineapple Express to whatever Manglehorn was supposed to be.

It’s a strong trailer, hinting at another smart career move for Bullock and an intriguing supporting cast, including Ann Dowd, Anthony Mackie and Zoe Kazan, implies more of an ensemble piece.

She’s one of the founding members of the IT squad. But Cara Delevingne has stepped out of the

spotlight temporarily to enjoy some time by herself in Nevada.

The make-up free Paper Towns actress made an appearance at the annual Burning Man Festival in Black Rock City at the weekend.

Cara, 23, appeared to be in her element as she unveiled her inner tomboy by hopping on a customised bike which she rode through the hot desert.

She was suitably styled for the tour around the festival site, slipping on a pair of comfy grey jogging bottoms, a matching crop top and a hoodie, which she tied around her neck.

The London model - who most recently fronted a raunchy YSL campaign - also wore patterned socks, sturdy boots and two printed neckerchiefs.

Andrew Garfield spent two Amazing Spider-Man movies getting inside the head of teen science whiz Peter Parker and his wall-

crawling alter ego, and he’s a firm believer that Spidey contains multitudes.

The British-American actor recently told Mic that he hopes future versions of the wisecracking superhero, who has traditionally (and contractually) been portrayed as white and straight, won’t be bound by such conventions.

“I’m excited to get to the point where we don’t have to have this conversation, where we can have a pansexual Spider-Man,” Garfield said. “What are we so scared of? Why are we so, ‘No, it has to be this way, a man and a woman.’ Why is that even a conversation?”

This isn’t the first time Garfield has advocated for a version of Spider-Man who’s exploring his sexual identity. He told EW in 2013 that he pitched the idea to Amazing producer Matt Tolmach.

“I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about M.J.,” Peter Parker’s girlfriend, Garfield said. “And I was like, ‘What if M.J. is a dude?’ Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It’s hardly even groundbreaking! … So why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?” (His top choice for the male M.J.? Michael B. Jordan.)

occasionally posted to Instagram to share her feelings about depression and hope.

“I spent this night shivering and laughing under a clear, cold sky full of stars with people I love just to witness something beautiful,” wrote the 26-year-old Williams on Saturday, posting a picture of a moon rising over a lake. “Avoiding fear, sadness or anger is not the same thing as being happy. I live my sadness every day, but I don’t resent it anymore.”

“And for those suffering from depression, I know how dark and endless that tunnel can feel,” wrote Williams. “But if happiness seems impossible to find, please hold on to the possibility of hope, faint though it may be. Because I promise you, there are enough nights under the same yellow moon for all of us to share, no matter how or when you find your way there.”

YOUR STAR TODAY

You may find it hard to take a re-alistic approach to your emotions

today. A sensitive issue may be pull-ing on you, leaving you feeling like you are way out in left field in the way you relate to oth-ers. You might want to let someone else take the lead, allowing you to regain your equi-librium before the next decision is made.

ARIES20th March - 20th April

Be the star of your own movie, and be proud of the role you play.

You might find yourself adopting the persona of many different characters, depending on your mood. There is a spe-cial gleam in your smile that you should share openly with others. Enjoy your-self in the company of those you love.

LEO 20th July - 20th Aug

Let your childish side come out and play today. Your dreams are in

full force, so let them lead the way. Enjoy lighthearted conversations with friends about the latest movies and the articles in your favourite magazines. This is a good day to improve your appearance. You have a much keener eye for beauty on a day like this.

SAGITTARIUS 20th Nov - 20th Dec

Question the validity of any-thing you come in conflict with

today. You might find people act-ing on incomplete information, and falsely accusing you of something you didn’t do. Work to bring harmony to the situation by getting the truth out. Words may be charged with strong emotions, so be gentle.

TAURUS 20th April - 20th May

Take a break from your daily routine and get off the track to-

day. The world will turn without you for a day, so feel free to tune out for a while. Remember that whatever path you decide to take is the right path. Don’t re-gret. Enjoy the day. Communicate your dreams and bring things to a balance.

VIRGO20th Aug - 20th Sept

Take a break from the trail you’re on and get off the beaten path.

Forge ahead with ideas and dreams today, rather than commitments. Question things and debate the facts. This is the per-fect day to go out and fly kites with friends. All group activities are strongly favoured. You can’t go wrong chatting about your life.

CAPRICORN 20th Dec - 20th Jan

Today is a great day for you, and you should enjoy a great deal of

playful conversation. Fantasy is likely to play a big role in the events of the day, and you may find yourself daydreaming as you walk down the street. Don’t bother with re-ality if you don’t have to. Enjoy your fantasy world and feel free to invite others into it.

GEMINI 20th May - 20th June

Things are flowing your way, and you should find a great deal of

pleasure in the company of others. You might find that there is an element of fan-tasy about the day that is causing you to lose track of time and space. Go to an art museum or attend a dance performance. See a movie and go out to your favourite restaurant.

LIBRA 20th Sep - 20th Oct

It may feel like something has suddenly clicked into place for you

today, because you have found the missing piece of a puzzle you have been work-ing on for a while. Fantasy and a playful atti-tude will lead you to them. Spread your ideas to the world, and adopt an attitude that en-courages others to join in your daydreams.

AQUARIUS 20th Jan - 20th Feb

There may be a rather confusing element to the day for you. You feel

tempted to act, but some pieces seem to be missing. It could be hard to make a de-cision since you don’t have the whole picture with you. You may want to spend this day in outside with friends, rather than making any major life decisions or commitments.

CANCER 20th June - 20th July

Don’t try to nail down any an-swers today, because you will

probably just end up feeling frus-trated than when you started out. The less you force your will on others, the more you find that things will go your way. Enjoy what you have already learned and accomplished. Keep things light.

SCORPIO 20th Oct - 20th Nov

Things may seem a bit surreal for you today, so don’t take other peo-

ple’s chatter too seriously. This is a day to reach out and touch someone, so pick up the phone and make that call. Share your dreams with your friends. Others may look at you in a weird way, but as long as you are being yourself, don’t be shy about sharing.

fostering a better bahrain for future generationsIn August 2015, it was announced

that on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the Prime Minister of Bahrain had been selected for the ITU Sustainable Development Award in appreciation of his contribution for making use of IT in achieving sustainable development. Despite so many remarkable achievements firmly under his belt, Shaikh Khalifa said, “the feelings of love showcased by the Bahraini citizens to me cannot be matched by any international honouring.” - a reflection of the true sentiment behind his work – deep, sincere loyalty to the people of Bahrain.Shaikh Khalifa has been acknowledged at an international level: with outstanding achievements in the field of Urban Development provided by the UN Human Settlement Program in 2007, the Special Citation of the UN-Habitat in 2008, the Ibn Sina Gold Medal by UNESCO in 2009, the Millennium Development Goals Award 2010, the African Shied in 2012, the Gold Award from the International Federation of Business and Professional Women (BPW International) in May 2014 and now in 2015, the ITU award. The late Amir, Shaikh Isa and his younger brother Shaikh Khalifa began their working life by accompanying their father Shaikh Salman to meetings. It was their father who instilled in them the art of diplomacy, humility and a sense of their responsibility as future leaders. At just nineteen years old, Shaikh Khalifa became the youngest member of a fourteen-member committee formed on 1st September 1954, by Shaikh Salman bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, to tackle leaseholder complaints against unscrupulous landlords. The committee successfully created legislation to control rental prices so traders and investors would not be deterred. Just two years later, on 22nd March 1956, Shaikh Khalifa was appointed as one of

the fourteen members of the Education Council formed by Shaikh Salman bin Hamad. In order to get a better understanding of the education system so that innovation could be applied to improve educational standards in the country, the young Shaikh Khalifa travelled to Europe. When Shaikh Khalifa was appointed the Head of the Education Council on 13th January 1957, he began the development of the educational programme that included implementation of policies for women to choose any career path.As a member of the Electricity Committee formed on 30th December 1957, Shaikh Khalifa supported research to supply water and electricity to all citizens. By 1958, to support the welfare of citizens, Shaikh Salman appointed Shaikh Khalifa as a member of the Electricity Committee and also a member of the committee assigned to look into the affairs of government employees. Shaikh Salman had a vision for Bahrain and could see that his son was a conscientious and strategic thinker – on 16th November 1960, Shaikh Khalifa was appointed Head of Government Finance. By 1971, Shaikh Khalifa was shouldering many of the country’s responsibilities as

Head of Government Finance, Head of the Irrigation Council, Head of Manama Municipality, Head of the Monetary Council, Head of the Council of appeal for Immigration and Residence Cases against expatriates, Head of Administrative Council and Head of the State Council. When the country gained independence in 1971, the late Amir, Shaikh Isa bin Salman issued a decree to re-organise the government and Shaikh Khalifa’s appointment as the Prime Minister was a natural choice.Since then, dignified and resilient Shaikh Khalifa has taken Bahrain to new heights and despite the size of the country, Bahrain is a key player in the international arena.

Achievements speak for themselves - to mention a few:1. The UNESCO Education for All Global Monitoring Report in 2010 commended Bahrain as the only Arab country to achieve the EFA goals and indicated the provision of education without any gender disparity. Dr. Hashem Abdulwahab, the UN educational, Scientific and Cultural organisation (UNESCO) international advisor for higher, technical and vocational education, recently announced that

fifteen countries around the world had adopted Bahrain’s technical and vocational curricula, in addition to training 15 teachers to apply the curricula. 2. There are more doctors, nurses and dentists per population in Bahrain than any other country in the GCC. In June 2014, the Kingdom of Bahrain’s National Health Information System won the “Enhanced Public Knowledge Management” Systems for the West Asia region award at the United Nations Public Service Awards 2014 in Seoul, South Korea, in recognition of the National Health Information System (I-Seha) and its significant contribution to the development of public healthcare in the Kingdom of Bahrain. 3. In the UN eGovernment Survey 2014, Bahrain was ranked first in the Arab World as well as 18th globally in the e-Government Development index. Shaikh Khalifa has always been keen to ensure that Bahrainis were able to avail government services and today, the e-Government portal in Bahrain is the first national integrated portal in the Gulf and Middle East.4. The total number of Banks and Financial Institutions as of 31st July 2015, are 403. Bahrain’s external trade, i.e. exports and imports, corresponds to more than 140% of GDP and the Bahraini dinar is pegged to the US dollar, which has effectively unchanged since 1980.Bahrain is one of the first countries in the world that has met the Millennium Development Goals ahead of schedule in terms of providing free education, women empowerment, gender equality, expansion of social welfare and enhanced standard of health care.It is without a doubt that Shaikh Khalifa has a vision and a strategy but more significant is that he has confirmed his competence and consistency to foster a better Bahrain for future generations.

Sally Saar

As a student in a public school, I have learned much about the

military, nuclear weapons, and war, but very little about peace. However, I have yet to be offered any kind of compressive and educational program promoting world peace. Luckily, as a child, I had the chance to hear a simple statement that has empowered me with the means to solve my problems peacefully and it will work for anyone regardless of race, religion, sex, or age. Learning to Do Unto Others As You Would Want Others To Do Unto You could be developed into a world peace theme program and taught in schools world-wide. This simple verse has become my personal philosophy of life for

dealing with individuals and groups within my own family, school, and community. I believe that this verse can be used to develop an educational peace program for my generation because it teaches that one person can make a difference. These words can empower students with the critical knowledge that in this world there is no problem so great that it can’t be solved in a constructive fashion. It is so important that my generation has opportunities to develop responsibility and motivation and to feel trusted to

make significant decision. We should be held responsible for our mistakes and poor choices, by learning to do unto others as we would want to be treated. We create perceptions and skills necessary for developing a generation of reliable and caring individuals ready to take on the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow. If an educational peace program that teaches students to think for themselves is offered in the world’s school system then, as tomorrow’s leaders, we will not allow other governments, drug dealers, or friends to manipulate us, nor will

we choose to manipulate others for personal gain. Each day the media details story after story of youth violence within families, schools, and communities. An educational program is desperately needed in the schools to teach students how to make positive choices when faced with personal conflicts. By learning to treat others as we would want to be treated, strong leadership skills will be developed in the next generation which will one day be making decisions that will be needed for peace to come to the world.

fostering a better bahrain for future generationsIn August 2015, it was announced

that on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the Prime Minister of Bahrain had been selected for the ITU Sustainable Development Award in appreciation of his contribution for making use of IT in achieving sustainable development.

The Asian School, one of the oldest Indian educational institutions in the Kingdom of Bahrain serving the

community here for the last 32 years, has introduced a change in the school uniform. The school has received excellent, positive feedback about the new uniform from current students, parents, teachers as well as alumni. ‘When we moved to our brand new, sprawling campus in Tubli, the need for a makeover was felt,’ said a spokesperson of the school to DT News. “We wished to keep the heart intact but bring about a fresh look that was in keeping with the times. We felt that our students, who are the face of the school, would be able to bring about this change by virtue of a change in the school uniform,” he added.

The official colour of the new school uniform is ‘Mocha’. A change in pattern was also warranted and therefore some modifications as well as additions have been made. The girls’ pinafore and boys’ trousers were modified slightly. Ties have been introduced for students of all grades except Kindergarten. Sashes have been introduced for girls of the Primary and Secondary Sections instead of belts. The school logo will now be proudly worn by the students on their new uniform. Subtle variations in the uniform help the teachers to differentiate between children of different sections.

A school uniform teaches students to dress smartly and take pride in their appearance. Uniforms help students to prepare for when they leave school and may have to dress smartly or wear a uniform.

It is believed that a school uniform can improve learning by reducing distraction, sharpening focus on schoolwork and making the classroom a more serious environment, allowing students to perform better academically.

NMS- DPS students displayed a splendid performance at

The Indian International Model United Nations Conference held from August 20 to 23 at Mumbai, India.

The Indian International Model United Nations certainly has bagged its position amongst the world’s best MUNs having organised Asia’s largest Youth Conference.

The delegates of NMS-DPS are delighted to have had this thrilling MUN experience, competing with 2500 delegates

from 150 schools all over the world. The conference provided a medium for the students to voice their opinions, visions and perceptions, and make a difference by providing solutions to thoughtfully selected issues in committees ranging from the Security Council to specialised ones like the Social Entrepreneurship Summit. The students are also privileged to have witnessed 20 amongst the world’s most remarkable luminaries deliver their speeches and perform for

them; from Avni Dhavey, Mani Shankar Aiyar and Vidya Balan to MJ5. The conference took place in India’s finest luxury abode, the Aamby Valley City.

School Chairman Dr. Ravi Pillai, Managing Director Geetha Pillai, and Principal Mr. Arun Kuumar Sharma congratulated the students, parents and the teachers in – charge Meenakshi Mathur and Yamini Ramesh for their outstanding achievement and wished the students all the success throughout their life.

As part of St Christopher’s ongoing commitment to enhance the

continuing professional education of its teaching staff, the School arranged two dynamic training days at the start of the new academic year.

At the beginning of the annual staff induction week, James Nottingham, was flown in from the U.K. and has been described as “one of the best professional speakers in the world of education”. James engaged and inspired his audience with an interactive and engaging day based on the theory and practice of feedback, attitudes, challenge, thinking and self-efficacy. He demonstrated how to enhance learning through the use of his Teaching Target Model which helps to engage, challenge and support learners. His concept of the Learning Pit helps build inquiry-led learning and resilience.

At the end of the busy week, a day was given over to – an EdTechTeam – James Sanders, Director of Innovation and Mark Hammons, an Apple Distinguished Educator. They presented on the role of technology in future learning, acknowledging that the future cannot be met with the teaching methods of the past, and that

if schools don’t adapt their approach to learning and embrace digital tools in the classroom, they will be providing an education that is no longer relevant for the world in which we live. EdTechTeam are supporters of the Future Ready Schools initiative and in a nutshell, their message is that Being Future Ready is a mindset schools need which way beyond just increasing the use of computers and iPads into the classroom. This was another hugely successful day, and staff left feeling excited and enthused and looking forward to the new academic year.

SUKUK ISSUANCE TO GO UP IN GCC

Changing dynamics

As president, I will take whatever action is necessary to protect the United States and our allies. I will not hesitate to take military action if Iran attempts to obtain a nuclear weapon

- US presidential candidateHillary Clinton

Tahir Haneef/[email protected]

Sukuk issuance is expected to reach new highs in the

coming years as more issuances are expected from GCC countries, especially Saudi Arabia. Even though, issuance from Malaysia has been on a decline, new entrants like UK, Luxembourg, South Africa and Hong Kong have arrested the volume decline, according to analysts.

The International Islamic Liquidity Management

Corporation, started recently, a multi-country initiative, is expected to play a leading

role in developing the secondary markets Islamic Sukuks. Unlike, modern finance, Islamic Finance lacks a liquid secondary-market where people could buy and sell Islamic finance products without much hassles, the Moody’s analysts Nitish Bhojnagarwala and Khalid Howladar told DT News recently.

Unlike, Malaysia, which is cutting down its debt, Saudi Arabia is in a very good economic situation to increase its debt and it is expected that they will issue more Islamic debt. This, coupled with the

efforts of the International Islamic Liquidity Management Corporation will lead to a better liquidity situation for Sukuks market, they added.

The recent initiative from Bahrain in starting a Central Sharia Board was lauded by the analysts and added that it will cut down many uncertainties involving standardization of Islamic products.

Nitish added that Islamic-assets analysis is also based on the process followed for other asset types and added that Sharia compliance generally ‘does not’ drive credit risk.

The partnership, termed as first of its kind in the region, is active in Jordan, Saudi Arabia where services are being progressively rolled-out. It will be soon rolled-out for Zain customers in Kuwait.

Glossy haired and wrinkle free, at age 51 chef Anjula

shows no signs of ageing and

admits she has never taken prescription

medicine.Now the champion

of traditional Indian cooking wants to share her anti-ageing and health secrets with women in the UK.

Anjula, who started

cooking with her father when she was 10 years old, runs her own Indian cookery school and catering business, both of which are dedicated to promoting and supplying authentic traditional Indian food in the UK.

The chef, a proponent of traditional Indian cuisine, was raised in Southall and has her own product range Route

207, named in memory of the many trips taken

with her father on the number 207 bus to

Shepherd’s Bush market, to buy Indian spices, fresh fish and vegetables.

S p e a k i n g about Indian cuisine, Anjula

said: “The ‘curries’ known here in the

UK barely scratch the surface of traditional, authentic Indian food.

“There is a whole treasure trove of recipes, f lavour combinations and beautiful ingredients that are completely neglected, along with all of their amazing health benefits.

“I love cooking with fresh vegetables and greens and am careful not to use any artificial colours and preservatives. I want to inspire as many people as possible to cook delicious, healthy food, just like my father did all those years ago.”

Here Anjula shares with the seven herbs integral to authentic Indian cooking that will spice up your cooking, and which she claims, might just change your life.

This is the herb to opt for if you are experiencing digestive prob-lems and bloating or as we move into winter and flu season (which I never suffer from) to boost the immune system.

Cumin has a distinct balance between pungent and earthy - a slightly bitter taste - but once they hit the warm oil you get a won-derful milder, almost nutty, taste.

1. Cumin

A great citrus tangy taste, most definitely a key player in good Indian food. The great thing is that one spice if over used won’t destroy its friendship and harmony with other spices.

Coriander has a high iron content and antibacterial properties and is a great antidote to hay fever.

Now these seeds really pack a punch! They add a real nutty fire and richness to any Indian dish – and most importantly they slow down ageing and help with the menopause…a must in any kitchen cupboard.

Bring just the right amount of warmth to your dish without an overpowering taste of heat, these chillies will leave your pal-ate suitably warm. These are the best chillies to use when you first start to experiment with Indian dishes. Kashmiri chillies are high in Vitamin C and quality antioxidants so amazing for glowing skin.’

Musky undertones and a slightly gingery taste, turmeric brings a great yellow hue to the dish. This is one spice you should never overuse as it is very pungent. Use to help combat arthritis, stomach pain, heartburn and a sore throat amongst other ailments.

Warm and aromatic with a background of sweetness, a mem-ber of the cinnamon family but much more earthy, cassia bark helps to control blood sugar levels and cholesterol.

Known as the queen of spices, green cardamom delivers a real floral, aromatic taste with a hint of eucalyptus almost perfume like. Beautifully effective in relieving constipation, green cardamom will also help to control blood pressure.

2. Coriander

3. Brown Mustard Seeds

4. Kashmiri Chillies

5. Turmeric

7. Green Cardamom

6. Cassia Bark

‘I guess the biggest telling sign that these spices do keep you young, is me... I’m living proof of it, although I do hate saying this!’

Queen becomes longest-reigning UK monarch

BRITISH AIRWAYS PLANE CATCHES FIRE ON RUNWAY

Several hurt

Las Vegas

A British Airways jet caught fire on Tuesday as it was

preparing to take off from Las Vegas. The incident prompted the crew to abort take off and evacuate terrified passengers, including several injured.

Jacob Steinberg, a reporter for Britain’s Guardian newspaper, said he was asleep on the plane when it came to a “crashing halt” on the runway.

“Initially told to stay seated, then shout of evacuate,” he wrote on Twitter, saying the flames had apparently melted some of the jet’s windows.

“They opened the back door and slide went down and smoke started coming in plane, followed by mad dash to front. A lot of panic,” he said.

Steinberg said the pilot later joined the passengers

inside the airport terminal and told them the fire was caused by a “catastrophic failure of the engine.” “The pilot looked pretty shook up to be honest,” he said. “Has been

flying for years, don’t think he had ever seen anything like that.” The Federal Aviation Administration said the fire broke out in the left engine of the 257-seat Boeing 777 shortly

There were 159 passengers and 13 crew on the flight, according to the FAA, which said seven people were treated

“Our crew evacuated the aircraft safely and the fire was quickly extinguished by

the emergency services at the airport,” a company statement said. “A small number of customers and our crew have been taken to hospital as a precaution.”

Britain celebrated Queen Elizabeth II becoming the country’s

longest-reigning monarch yesterday, a milestone the 89-year-old herself downplayed as “not one to which I have ever aspired.”

The bells of Westminster Abbey rang out in London as Prime Minister David Cameron paid tribute in parliament to her 63-year reign as a “golden thread running through three post-war generations”.

“Inevitably, a long life can pass by many milestones. My own is no exception,” the queen told a cheering crowd of supporters waving British and Scottish flags as she opened a railway line in Scotland.

She said the landmark was “not one to which I have ever aspired”.

“But I thank you all and the many

others at home and overseas for your touching messages,” said the queen, who wore a diamond-studded brooch that once belonged to the previous record holder - her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria.

Elizabeth overtook Victoria at 1630 GMT, the best estimate from royal officials for the time at which the monarch, who has become synonymous with Britain itself, reaches the historic moment.

“Today Queen Elizabeth II has officially become the longest reigning British Monarch,” read a tweet published on the dot on the monarchy’s Twitter page.

She has served more than 23,226 days on the throne - a reign spanning from the gloom of the post-war years to the digital age, with a few royal scandals causing blushes along the way.

She is to host a private dinner later at Balmoral Castle - her traditional summer residence in Scotland - with her grandson Prince William and his wife Kate in attendance.

“She is our queen and we could not be more proud of her,” Cameron told parliament. “She has served this country with unerring grace, dignity and decency and long may she continue to do so.”

Elizabeth became queen upon the death of her father George VI, Britain’s king during World War II, whose stammer inspired the Oscar-winning film “The King’s Speech”.

Royal sources said she was not keen to celebrate because of the painful memory of his death. The calculation of her time on the throne is based on when George VI passed away, which is estimated at around 1:00 am on February 6, 1952.

Court orders Lufthansa pilots to halt strikeFrankfurt

Lufthansa won a temporary injunction yesterday

against a pilots’ strike, but the German airline said 1,000 scheduled flights would nevertheless remain cancelled and 140,000 passengers grounded.

The appeals court in Frankfurt ordered pilots to halt their two-day industrial action, ruling

that the stoppage, the 13th in 18 months, was unlawful. It thus overturned a lower court ruling Tuesday and agreed with Lufthansa that the primary aim of the pilots’ union, Vereinigung Cockpit, did not appear to be to reach a concrete agreement on early retirement provisions, but to attack management’s proposed restructuring concept, known as Wings.

Drowned children laid to restKarbala

An Iraqi family caught up in the boat accident

that claimed the life of Aylan Kurdi buried their two children yesterday who drowned along with the Syrian toddler.

The bodies of eight-year-old boy Haidar and 12-year-old girl Zainab, who died in the accident off the coast of Turkey, arrived at Baghdad airport and were buried in the Shia shrine city of Karbala.

Their mother, Zainab Abbas, said that she, her husband and their three children had been on the boat carrying the Kurdi family that capsized last week.

Abbas said her family had travelled to Istanbul, then made their way to Bodrum, on the coast, trying for almost two weeks to make the boat trip to Greece.

“Everyone was talking about this route, so we decided that we would leave, to provide

them with a better life,” Abbas said.

Abbas said that the night they departed, smugglers rushed her family onto a boat along with Aylan and his relatives who were fleeing the war in Syria.

But within a few minutes of their departure, the boat capsized, throwing passengers into the sea and trapping her children underneath it.

Abbas managed to touch her daughter’s hand, but could not

save her. Abbas, her husband and third child survived the wreck.

Meanwhile, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has announced plans that he says will offer a “swift, determined and comprehensive” response to Europe’s migrant crisis.

Under the proposals, 120,000 additional asylum seekers will be distributed among EU nations, with binding quotas.

“Has been

flying for years, don’t think he had ever seen anything like that.” The Federal Aviation Administration said the fire broke out in the left engine of the 257-seat Boeing 777 shortly

after 4:00 pm (2300 GMT) and the crew immediately aborted take off and ordered an evacuation.

“Passengers deplaned on the runway using emergency slides and (were) bused to the terminal,” FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said.

SEVEN INDIANS MISSINGYemen air strike

New Delhi

Indian police are investigating claims a Saudi official who

enjoys diplomatic immunity repeatedly raped his two Nepalese maids in his home close to New Delhi, senior officers said yesterday.

The women, aged 30 and 50, have filed complaints with police alleging the unnamed diplomat kept them locked in his apartment where they were abused, assistant commissioner Rajesh Kumar said.

A police team rescued the women late Monday from the apartment in the upscale satellite city of Gurgaon after a third recently hired maid alerted a local NGO, the officer said. “We have registered a case

of rape, sodomy and illegal confinement based on their complaint,” Kumar said.

“They have also said that even guests at the house raped them. That is why we have added gang rape in the list of charges.”

However, the Saudi embassy denied the allegations in a statement to the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency. “The embassy strongly stresses that these allegations are false and have not been proven,” the statement said.

One of the women told the NDTV network yesterday that they had been held at the Gurgaon apartment for about four months. “They raped us, kept us locked up, did not give

us anything to eat... When we tried to run away, we were beaten up,” the woman said, her face covered with a scarf to hide her identity.

One of the alleged victims also told PTI “they showed us knives and threatened to kill us”.

In their complaint to police, the women said they had been brought from Jeddah, where they had been confined to a hotel, to Gurgaon to work

for the official’s family. “We have been able to establish the identity (of the accused) and we have also been able to establish that the residents of that flat enjoy diplomatic immunity,” police commissioner Navdeep Singh Virk told reporters.

“We will investigate to prove the offence in accordance with the Vienna Convention.”

Under the convention, diplomats and their family members enjoy legal protection in countries where they are posted and cannot be arrested or detained for any crime.

However an embassy can waive immunity if serious crimes are committed and if the foreign government comes under pressure from the host

country. An Indian foreign ministry spokesman said, “we have sought a detailed report from the local police” without elaborating. Nepal’s ambassador to India, Deep Upadhyay, said he was in touch with the women and had

sought help from the foreign ministry to ensure “justice is meted out” in the case.

The women are understood to be travelling back to Nepal with the help of the NGO that is helping police with the case. (AFP)

Clinton defends Iran nuclear dealWashington

Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary

Clinton expressed firm support yesterday for the nuclear accord with Iran, saying it was flawed but still “strong”.

“Is it perfect? Well, of course not,” Clinton said in a speech at the Brookings Institution. “No agreement like this ever is. But is it a strong agreement? Yes, it is.”

“Either we move forward on the path of diplomacy and seize this chance to block Iran’s path to a nuclear weapon, or we turn down a more dangerous path leading to a far less certain and riskier future. “That’s why I support this deal,” she said.

Meanwhile, Clinton on Tuesday apologized for using a private email server while secretary of state, calling the decision, which has dogged her Democratic presidential bid, a “mistake.”

Bangkok blast suspect ‘gave device to bomber’

Seven Indian nationals are missing in Yemen after

air strikes hit their boats, as a Saudi-led coalition steps up attacks against rebels, the Indian foreign ministry said yesterday.

One of the boats was travelling across the Red Sea from the Somalian port of Berbera to Mokha in Yemen when it came under fire on Tuesday, a foreign ministry spokesman said.

“The boats were carrying a total of 20 Indian crew members of which 13 are alive and seven are reported missing,” Vikas Swarup told reporters in New Delhi.

Indian embassy officials are in contact with local authorities and are due to meet the owner of one of the boats in a bid

to gain more information, including on the fate of the seven, Swarup said.

The comments came after media reports on Tuesday of 20 Indians killed in air strikes on fuel smugglers in Yemen.

India closed its embassy in

Yemen one month later and evacuated more than 4,500 of its nationals.

Meanwhile, warplanes of the Saudi-led coalition yesterday bombed Shia Huthi rebel

positions in Sanaa, stepping up attacks in the wake of a deadly missile strike on its troops, witnesses said.

They said the latest raids targeted arms depots held by

the Huthi rebels and renegade troops loyal to ousted president Ali Abdullah Saleh in southeast Sanaa.

Military bases north of Sanaa, including a munitions factory of the Republican Guard loyal to Saleh, were also targeted, they said.

The pro-government coalition has intensified its air raids against rebel positions since a missile strike killed 60 Gulf soldiers on Friday in Marib, east of Sanaa. Air raids on Tuesday night also targeted rebels in Sarwah and Jufaineh, in Marib province.

The latest strikes follow the exiled government’s announcement that 10,000 Yemeni fighters are now ready to serve in a “national army being prepared to liberate Sanaa and other provinces”.

A key suspect in last month’s deadly Bangkok blast

handed the backpack bomb to a man in a yellow T-shirt later seen placing it at a busy shrine moments before it detonated, Thai police said yesterday.

The revelation came as investigators gave their most detailed account of how the alleged network of bombers coordinated the attack, including through drop-offs and WhatsApp text messages.

Mystery still surrounds the motive of the group accused of being responsible for the August 17 bombing that left 20 people dead in the heart of Bangkok. But after appearing

flat-footed in response to the unprecedented attack, police have trumpeted the arrest of two foreigners and say they have identified several other suspects.

One of the two men in custody, Yusufu Mieraili, was detained last week near the border with Cambodia and has since been quizzed by military and police investigators.

Mieraili, 25, who was holding a Chinese passport when he was caught, has admitted to playing a central role in the operation, according to police.

Yesterday, he was taken on a second re-enactment of his alleged role in the crime -

a standard police procedure. “This is the area where he met the man in a yellow shirt to exchange the backpack,” national police spokesman Prawut Thavornsiri told reporters outside a Bangkok railway station, later adding he received his orders via WhatsApp.

Local media reports have named the bomb mastermind as “Izan”, saying he commissioned and guided the attack, but left the country a day before it was carried out.

But Prawut refused to be drawn on details of who pulled the strings behind the blast.

However, he did reveal that Mieraili, whose hands

were bound while he wore a bulletproof vest during the re-enactment, left a “heavy

backpack” with the bomber outside the station some thirty minutes from the crime scene.

If you are familiar with the Hitman video game series, you’ll

have no trouble recognizing the titular character of this film by his attire - Italian wool black suit and crimson tie. He, along with many others like him are the product of a super-secret genetic experiment which involved modifying a section of a person’s DNA in order to enhance - as well as subdue - certain qualities. The resultant effect would imbue the modified ‘person’ with almost superhuman powers. Agent 47 knows no fear, feels no love, nor does he tolerate idiots or idiotic questions. Nothing and nobody

messes with his given objective. In this case, his objective involves helping Katia find her father, an important figure who a group known as the Syndicate, headed by LeClerq (Thomas Kretschmann), want to capture and question. The action takes place between Salzburg, Berlin and Singapore along with fairly well-executed crash-boom-bang sequences in all those respective cities. Early on in the film, we get a clue that Katia has a knack of getting out of difficult situations with a sort of enhanced sixth sense that always comes to her rescue,

forewarning her about potential harm.Zachary Quinto’s character is a genetically superior version of Agent 47. He is also on the run from 47, initially. While the film lacks warmth, there’s plenty of Euro-camp action here. Police cars emblazoned with ‘Polizei’ in car chases down narrow streets and more gunfights than dialogues. The action is slick and indeed, very stylish. Don’t expect much from the script; you don’t watch a movie like Hitman while expecting Shakespearian prose delivered as shots are fired. Get your action fix here.

THE LAUGHING DJOKE

New York

Novak Djokovic defeated Feliciano Lopez 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7/2) to

reach the US Open semi-finals, a 21st last-four spot in his last 22 Grand Slams.

The top seed and 2011 champion, playing in his 26th consecutive quarter-final at the majors, claimed his 55th match win in New York.

Djokovic, this year’s Australian Open and Wimbledon champion, also enjoyed his fifth win in five meetings against Lopez and will take a staggering 13-0 career record over defending champion Marin Cilic into their Friday semi-final.

Cilic reached the semi-finals with a 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (3/7), 6-4 win over France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

“Feliciano is one of those rare players who serves and volleys on first and second serves,” said 28-year-old Djokovic after winnning a ninth successive quarter-final in New York.

“He has a big serve. I played a bad game in the second game of the second set and it was gone.

“The fourth set was anyone’s. He had some break points while I had to wait until the tiebreak to get a look.

“I played it well and I am happy to get through in four.”

Djokovic had been pushed to four sets by Lopez’s Spanish compatriot Roberto Bautista Agut in the previous round.

But the 33-year-old Lopez, playing in his first US Open quarter-final after 55 consecutive Grand Slam

appearances, was shellshocked in the first set.

In front of a subdued Arthur Ashe Stadium which had thinned out after the Serena Williams-Venus Williams blockbuster, Lopez managed just five points on the Djokovic serve in the 25-minute opener and was broken twice.

But Lopez, one of four men over 30 to make the last-eight, rallied in the second set, breaking in the second game on his way to a 4-1 lead.

Djokovic saved one set point but a 10th ace gave serve-and-volleyer Lopez the set 6-3.

The Serb, bidding for a 10th Grand Slam title in New York, took the only break of the third set off a Lopez double fault in the second game.

He then played the perfect tie-breaker in the fourth to take victory while Lopez was left to rue his 48 unforced errors in a match which finished just after 1am on Wednesday.

Over a four-hour battle on Arthur Ashe Stadium, 26-year-old Cilic claimed a fifth win in six matches against Tsonga, firing 29 aces and 63 winners.

But the 30-year-old Tsonga made him work in 35-degree (95 F) heat, saving four match points before the champion went through.

“It was a big mental battle. I lost the fourth set despite having three match points. Jo played some amazing shots,” said Cilic, who dashed Tsonga’s hopes of completing the set of semi-finals spots at all four majors.

Malaysia braced for punishment after flare chaosKuala Lumpur

Malaysia’s football body braced for possible

punishment yesterday after flare-throwing fans forced the abandonment of a World Cup qualifier in ugly scenes which deepened the country’s soccer crisis.

The embattled Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), under heavy fire since last week’s record 10-0 defeat to UAE, said it was “awaiting the decision of FIFA” after Tuesday’s incident.

Militant fans angry at last week’s 10-0 humiliation in UAE fired flares billowing orange

smoke at Shah Alam Stadium as Malaysia trailed Saudi Arabia 2-1 in the final minutes late on Tuesday. Players and officials hurried from the field and Saudi fans ran from the stands as flares flew around the stadium. Eleven people were arrested but no one was reported injured.

Asian Football Confederation (AFC) president Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa said the regional body was “extremely concerned” and would support any investigation by world authority FIFA.

“The AFC is extremely disappointed with the events which took place on Tuesday

and we stress that we take such matters very seriously,” he said in a statement. “This sort of behaviour is deplored by all those who seek to protect the best interests of football in Asia,” the Bahraini added.

Malaysia’s football body has been strongly criticised by both supporters and the government after a dire run of results culminated in last week’s 10-0 loss.

Malaysia’s worst-ever defeat followed an earlier 1-1 draw in qualifying at home against lowly East Timor and a 6-0 loss to Palestine.

“FAM views the issue of

security as a serious matter, especially the safety of spectators, players and officials in the stadium,” an FAM statement said. Tuesday’s conflagration

was blamed on the “Ultras Malaya” group of hardcore supporters, who accuse the FAM of incompetence and had threatened to disrupt the match.

Pennetta stuns Kvitova to reach US Open semisNew York

Italy’s 26th-ranked Flavia Pennetta shocked two-

time Wimbledon champion and Czech fifth seed Petra Kvitova 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 yesterday to reach her second US Open semi-final.

Pennetta next will play today against the winner of a later match, delayed by rain, between two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka, the 20th seed from Belarus, and Romanian second seed Simona Halep for a berth in Saturday’s final.

Pennetta, 3-1 all-time

against Halep and 2-2 against Azarenka, matched her best Grand Slam run from the 2013 US Open semi-finals, where she lost to Azarenka.

“I’m really happy right now,” Pennetta said. “I was just trying to fight every ball, running and push everything I can.

“I didn’t think to get through this match. In the second set I was playing and playing -- it was unbelievable.”

Kvitova’s ouster removes a potential threat to Williams that delivered one of only

two Williams losses this year when they met in May on Madrid clay.

Kvitova, the first Czech woman in the US Open’s last eight since Daja Bedanova in 2001, made 60 unforced errors to only 16 for Pennetta.

Kvitova also had nine double faults against only four aces in hot conditions at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

“It’s not just the heat,” Pennetta said. “It’s the tension for the match, for what you think, what you have to be, what you want

to be, have to do -- it’s everything in your mind. You have to take it out and just play.”

Pennetta, 33, improved to 4-3 against left-hander Kvitova, 25, the 2011 and 2014 Wimbledon champion whose run was still her best at a US Open.

Kvitova smacked a forehand long to hand Pennetta a break and a 3-2 lead, broke again in the seventh game and won after two hours and 23 minutes when Kvitova hit a forehand long.

New York

Roberta Vinci is confident and carefree approaching

her first Grand Slam semi-final, even though it’s a US Open showdown today with history-chasing Serena Williams, whom the Italian has never beaten.

“I’m really happy,” Vinci said. “I have nothing to lose. Just play my game, enjoy my match and we will see.”

The world number 43 downed France’s 40th-ranked Kristina Mladenovic 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, Tuesday to finally crack a Slam last-eight in her 44th try.

But she is 0-4 all-time against Serena, who holds all four

major trophies and who moved two wins from completing the first calendar Grand Slam since Steffi Graf in 1988 by defeating her sister Venus 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.

Serena can also match Graf’s career Open Era record of 22 singles titles, two shy of Australian Margaret Court’s all-time mark, but first she has to get past Vinci.

“It’s not easy to play her, but we will see,” Vinci said.

“I have a lot of experience, but when you play against Serena, it doesn’t matter. You have to play better, then better, then better.

“I have to play my game, aggressive, nothing special. I know I have a lot of experience, but maybe against (Serena) I don’t need this experience.”

Vinci, 32, became the lowest-

ranked Slam semi-finalist since 83rd-rated compatriot Flavia Pennetta at the 2013 US Open.

Her nine career titles are 60 fewer than Serena. “She’s the number one. She’s an incredible player,” Vinci said. “I played against her in Toronto three weeks ago. The serve, it’s incredible. It’s tough to return. She’s the number one.”

Vinci was surprised as her quarter of the draw opened up even before the tournament began with Russian third seed Maria Sharapova withdrawing due to an injury.

Exits by Spanish 10th seed Carla Suarez Navarro and Serbian 21st seed Jelena Jankovic one match before they would have played Vinci helped. Serb seventh seed Ana Ivanovic lost in the first round.

And Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard slipped and fell in the locker room, sustaining a concussion that allowed

Vinci to advance by walkover and enjoy extra rest ahead of the match against Mladenovic.

“When you play the Grand Slams, it’s always tough and you have a lot of pressure,” Vinci said. “But I think I have also good draw, because Suarez lost, Jankovic the same, Bouchard. So maybe this was my tournament. I don’t know. Sometimes it can happen.”

It comes near the end of a career that has seen its greatest success in doubles, including 110 weeks as the world doubles number one.

“It’s nice. I’m 32. I’m not young,” Vinci said. “I’m at the end of my career, so my first semi-final, it’s incredible.

“When you work hard for a long time and every single day, sometimes you have some periods down and try to come back. It’s not always easy. I’m very proud of myself.”
