Miryang

A fire raced through a small South Korean hospital

with no sprinkler system yesterday, killing 37 people, many of them elderly, and injuring more than 140 others in the country’s deadliest blaze in about a decade.

Sejong Hospital in the southeastern city of Miryang has a separate nursing ward where 94 elderly patients were being treated, but all of them were safely evacuated, fire officials said.

Most of the victims were on the first and second floors of the hospital’s six-story general ward, where its emergency room and intensive-care unit were located. Officials believe the fire started in the

emergency room.Mirayng police official

Kim Han-su said 34 of the dead were women and 26 were in their 80s or older. He said police may be able to announce the cause of the fire on Saturday. Police and forensic investigators dressed in white clothes, masks and helmets examined burned equipment in the blackened emergency room.

Dark smoke and flames were pouring from the emergency room when firefighters arrived, so they used ladders to enter second-floor windows. Some carried patients on their backs to other rescuers below, who moved them on stretchers to ambulances.

Several fabric escape chutes were hanging from the building’s sixth floor windows after being used to evacuate patients and hospital staff.

Dozens of fire trucks and two helicopters were sent to the hospital as thick smoke blanketed nearby streets. The blaze was extinguished in about three hours.

Three of the dead worked at the hospital — an emergency room doctor and a nurse and nurse assistant on the second floor — said Son Kyung-cheol, head of the foundation that operates the facility. The National Fire Agency said officials were trying to identify other victims.

Most of the deaths appeared to be due to suffocation, with

only one victim suffering burns, a National Fire Agency official said on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak to the media.

Authorities said 143 people were injured, including seven who were in serious condition.

Son said the hospital did not have sprinklers because they were not required by law. Fire officials said the hospital wasn’t big enough to require them.

Fire official Choi Man-wu said authorities were investigating whether the hospital had missed any mandatory safety inspections, although Son said it had not.

If safety issues were involved in the fire, hospital and local authorities are

likely to receive harsh public criticism. In 2014, South Korea grappled with the aftermath of a ferry sinking that killed more than 300 people and exposed serious shortcomings in public safety. Officials blamed crew members’ negligence, overloaded cargo, improper storage, unprofessional rescue work and corruption by the ship’s owners.

President Moon Jae-in held an emergency meeting with senior advisers and ordered officials to provide necessary medical treatment to those rescued, find the exact cause of the fire and work out measures to prevent future fires, spokesman Park Su-hyun said.

South Korea is one of the fastest-aging countries in the world and has many nursing hospitals, which are preferred for elderly people who need long-term doctors’ care.

In 2014, a fire set by an 81-year-old dementia patient killed 21 people at a hospital for the elderly.

In other recent fires, 29 people were killed in late December in a building in central Seoul, which was the country’s deadliest blaze in the past decade before the hospital fire. Last weekend, a fire at a Seoul motel killed six people. Police arrested a man suspected of setting it in anger because he had been denied a room for being heavily drunk. (AP)

A Bahraini boy was sentenced to three

months imprisonment for his involvement in the attack on Al Hala Cultural and Sports Club in Muharraq last July.

The 19-year-old, along with a group of boys his age, broke into the club and attacked the coach, players and employees there with planks and sticks.

The attack came while the football team performed their evening practice.

The incident was recorded by the surveillance cameras installed at the club. The players chased the attackers outside the club and were able

to catch the defendant and two others, before handing them over to the police.

Chief Prosecutor of Muharraq Governorate Prosecution Abdulla Al Dossary confirmed in a statement issued back then that

the suspects were interrogated and referred to court.

Al Dossary also said the arrests were made after reviewing the footages from the security cameras installed at the club and interrogating several accused.

The footage of the barbarian attack was leaked to the internet and was strongly denounced by sports figures and social media users in the Kingdom.

Youth and Sports Affairs Minister Hisham bin Mohammed Al Jowder had visited the club the next day, met the officials and players there and assured them that the government would take all necessary measures to prevent all sort of violence from recurring in sports facilities. He affirmed that “the protection of sports facilities was a national responsibility”.

The boy was sentenced on Thursday by the Fifth Lower Court, while two of his companions were acquitted.

The Northern Area Municipality conducted

a campaign against illegal street vendors in Aali village, recently.

The campaign was conducted at one of the areas in the Northern Governorate, a few metres away from the historic pottery factory in

Aali, where illegal activities were rampant.

The municipality announced that the drive came in cooperation with the area’s representative in the Northern Area Municipal Council Abdulla Ashoor, Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA), security authorities and Urbaser Cleaning Company.

“The campaign was aimed at combating the increasing

illegal activities of street vendors in the area, as they sell illegal and unhealthy products, that is in addition to the rising number of complaints received by citizens and residents of the area against the vendor’s immoral behaviours,” the municipality said in a statement issued yesterday.

The municipality also said that Ashoor and a number of citizens and residents of

the area have documented the illegal practices of the vendors and provided the municipality with copies of the recorded violations.

Illegal sale of garments, foodstuff, meat, fish, banned tobacco products and illegal taxi services were rampant in the area.

Ashoor added that the majority of the vendors are staying in the country illegally.

Today’s Effective ProductivityAs the world around us is continuously changing, there is a

great need for perceptions to adapt. What was deemed as applicable in the past is not necessarily applicable today.

With the era of industrialization came the mentality of “the more, the merrier” hence working hours were increased to heighten profits and achieve what was then known as ‘Success’. And so, the era of mass production began. Goods were sold in bulks of quantity and the level of quality was moderate. However, the world grew and with that growth came a different perspective. In the 21st century, the saying “Quality is better than Quantity” has been reiterated countless times thus consumers prefer goods that are ‘limited edition’ as they are deemed to have a higher quality.

The perception of effective productivity - the ability to create the right result and deliver what matters - has changed into being qualitatively oriented rather than quantitative. Yet can this change be seen in our educational system and workplace?

There is a trend of perceived intelligence in our educational system that is directly related to the quantity of performance. Many boast of all-nighters spent studying before an exam, or even the amount of pages they wrote in an essay, and the perception here is that with the increase in quantity comes an increase in the percentage of success. A clearer case where our perception of effective productivity clashes with today’s reality is the belief that certification has the absolute strong hold in the amount of knowledge attained. However, we all know at least one certified individual with Masters or PhD certificate who cannot answer a simple question in their field. Quantity cannot stand alone in achieving effective productivity.

Equally, there are many hardworking employees who submit their tasks on time, have impeccable self-discipline and achieve effective productivity yet are not appreciated. Whereas the employee who lacks time management and self-discipline therefore always works overtime is perceived by many as the more effectively productive. Employers may discard the fact that quality is surely affected and this loss cannot be compensated through short-term quantitative work.

The clear gap between the reality of today’s effective productivity and our integrated perception of it must be recognized and acted upon. We must grow with the developments around us and although our growth is apparent in many areas, it is crucial that we bridge the gap in perceived and actual productivity.

Finland utilizes this concept clearly in their educational system, and their effective productivity cannot be ignored. Only nine years of education is compulsory (from the 1st to the 9th grade) however this decrease in quantity is compensated by the quality of their education, not necessarily concentrating on the grading system but rather to ensure what is learnt is retained in the minds of the future generation.

We all can count, yet how many of us utilize those numbers to solve our day to day problems?

Inter-faith dialogue centre to be officially opened on March 14DT News NetworkManama

The King Hamad Global Centre for Inter-Faith

Dialogue and Peaceful Co-Existence will be officially inaugurated on March 14.

The inaugural ceremony will be held under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa, said Bahrain Federation of Expatriate Associations (BFEA) Secretary-General Betsy Mathieson.

She made the announcement at a ‘This is Bahrain’ event held in cooperation with US Simon Wiesenthal Center in Mumbai, India, in the presence of interfaith representatives, academic figures and diplomats from all over the world.

“The campaign was launched to promote Bahrain’s cosmopolitan society and the wise philosophy advocated by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa to foster co-existence and tolerance, being the only viable paths to counter extremism and terrorism,” she said.

She highlighted three unique projects in the world which epitomize HM the King’s vision of co-existence and tolerance – The Bahrain Declaration, the King Hamad Chair for peaceful coexistence at the La Sapienza University of Rome and the King Hamad Global Centre for Inter-Faith Dialogue and Peaceful Co-Existence.

The King Hamad Global Centre for Inter-Faith Dialogue and Peaceful Co-Existence was launched in Los Angeles in September 2017 in the

Presence of HM the King’s Representative for Charity Works and Youth Affairs His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al-Khalifa and other key figures.

“This is Bahrain has since received positive messages of support from religious leaders, academic personalities, politicians and heads of states who look forward to taking part in the pioneering project- for Bahrain to become the ‘The Switzerland of the Middle East’”, said Mathieson.

She commended years-long deep-rooted relations binding Bahrain and India, adding that religious freedom is a core right enshrined in both countries’ constitutions.

She said the diverse Indian community in Bahrain epitomizes the Kingdom’s religious liberties and tolerance

– adding that the Sikh Temple dates to more than 200 years.

Bahrain’s cosmopolitan society comprises the Sikhs, who take part in all religious festivals, alongside the Bahara, the Bahai, Muslims, the Christians, the Buddhist, Jews and representatives of other Indian faiths.

“All faith followers living in Bahrain have the freedom to exercise their religious liberties and build worshipping venues,” she said, commending the Indian

community’s contribution to Bahrain’s development, being an integral part of Bahrain “big cosmopolitan and multi-cultural society”.

Shura Council Second Deputy Chairperson Jameela Al-Salman extended support from Shura Council President Ali bin Salah Al-Saleh and all members to This is Bahrain.

US Simon Wiesenthal Center Rabbi Abraham Cooper hailed the King of Bahrain Declaration which, he said, was launched by a courageous Arab and Muslim leader, in a region where extremists exploit religion to spark divisions and fuel hatred, violence and terrorism.

“The time has come for all religious leaders to take the initiative and advocate tolerance and peace and help usher in a new path built on mutual respect, not just tolerance, which is the core message of HM the King,” he said.

He hailed the opening of King Hamad Global Centre for Inter-Faith Dialogue and Peaceful Co-Existence in March 2018, saying that the milestone would epitomize the King’s support to tolerance and respect for others.

Animal rights activists in the Kingdom have raised

their concerns over getting rid of stray dogs by means of poison.

Reports say at least 70 such poisoning incidents occurred in Tubli alone this year. Bilad Al Qadeem, Sitra and Salmabad also reported a dozen such killings.

According to Fathiya Al Bastaki, the founder of a group concerned about stray animals rescue, dozens of strays have disappeared mysteriously during the past few weeks.

Many of the strays, Al Bastaki said, went missing were regularly fed by them. Some of them were found dead apparently “affected by eating poisoned baits.”

“Poisoning campaign is systematic and organised by a group of stray dog haters,” she told DT News.

The matter, she said, has been reported to the police

and investigation is ongoing to find the culprits.

Bahrain strays, the group founded by Al Bastaki, has lodged complaints against several such poisoning incidents in the Kingdom, mainly in the Capital Governorate.

When asked the Interior Ministry confirmed that they are closely monitoring the issue and investigators will soon find those responsible for what they have done.

Strongly condemning the

acts, Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry also pledged to bring the culprits before the law.

Al Bastaki told DT News that her group has been feeding the strays for the past six years. “Though some abuse cases were reported earlier, the poisoning incidents are new,” she said.

She said that her group is issuing warnings to pet owners not to allow their pets eat meat placed on roadsides, as “it might probably be poisoned”.

“We have coordinated with many members of the community, including watch guards, to observe any suspicious activities and report it to the police,” Al Bastaki said.

Stray dogs issue has been fuming in the Kingdom for a while now. Many have demanded immediate action to curb their presence in the residential areas, while others have called for more merciful solutions including spaying the dogs or providing them with a proper shelter.

Indian school triumphs

The problem of the medical errors is no

longer confined to its cadres in the medical field, it is a social problem that is of special importance to all the categories and classes of the society being a concern for the people of law and justice. In some cases, medical errors result in the death or disability of the patients, leading to search how to address these errors and the risks that result from them.

The practice of medical and surgical work by the physician requires the relation with the safety of the human body, such as examining the patient’s body, describing the medications, giving some narcotic drugs, conducting a surgery, removing parts

of the human body’s tissues or samples of his blood for analysis. Theses acts –if done by a regular person -form crimes under the penal laws, as well as the laws of the practice of the medical professions.

However, the real problem is when the patient’s life is contacted by the physician, it is known that physicians intentionally commit intentional errors such as abortions, falsification of reports, failure to provide assistance to people in case of danger, and other cases, the non-intentional errors were identified in the following cases.

-The case of carelessness, negligence and lack of attention.

- Non- precaution, and

failure to observe the laws and regulations regulating the profession of practicing medicine.

Therefore, this profession should be regulated through observance to avoid these cases, which is known as the criminal liability of the physician, to reduce the medical errors and impose sanctions commensurate with the action taken against the patient.

The relationship between the physician and the patient is a moral and legal relationship ,obligating him to exercise caution and care in order not to harm the others, and any breach that results in harm leads to the criminal accountability of the physician for this behavior. For example, if the physician describes an inappropriate medication for the patient or makes an error in the detection of the doses required for the treatment (Diagnostic errors) or increases the narcotic material for the patient, and this resulted in a harm ; so he bears the criminal liability.

The French courts judged by the criminal liability on the physician for performing a complete surgical operation, while partial surgery was

possible, and so they imposed the criminal liability of the physician.

The Bahraini legislation has stated these trends by refraining from the discussions that lead to making the error by the physician or not, by leaving the matter to the competent committee to reach the appropriate decisions in this regard, in accordance with Article no. 5 of the Decree-Law no. (7) of the year 1989 about the practice of human medicine and dentistry.

Article no.(27) of this decree determines the liability of the physician in the following cases:

1- If he commits an error that causes harm to the patient as a result of ignorance of technical or practical matters that every physician is supposed to know.

2- If the patient is harmed as a result of the physician’s negligence or lack of care.

3- If he performs on his patients experiments or scientific researches that are not approved by the Ministry of Health, and these would cause harm to them.

The committee provided for in Article no.5 of this law shall be responsible for determining the occurrence of the errors

referred to.We conclude from the

above that the legislator has basically defined the errors of the physician as a result of the practice of medical work without entering the technical issues that have been left to the experienced physicians to detect some technical aspects that may relate to the error and clarify the liability of the physician for his work ,and here lies another problem in the difficulty of proving the medical error.

The provisions of the law are devoid of any definition of the medical error in particular, although they have addressed the concept of the error in general in the Bahraini Penal Code where the legislator only mentioned various forms and examples of the error in general, such as negligence, these forms were mentioned as an example only.

The physician in this form will then be subject to the general rules that are applied to the regular person but in front of the special nature of the profession of medicine ; it is no longer acceptable to be equal to the regular person being required to exercise a higher degree of precaution, the seriousness of the profession

of medicine based on the human body that is protected by all laws and constitutions , imposing the need to adopt new rules in the criminal liability in a way that reflects the nature of the seriousness of the medical profession, on one hand, and on the other hand provides the penal protection for the patients from the errors of the physicians which destroy their right to life and safety of the body.

But the question remains, are these applicable laws are sufficient for the determination of the error being committed intentionally or unintentionally to deter the medical errors? or it is necessary to speed up the privatization of the medical profession by means of independent legislative texts, by passing a law that regulates this profession in a legal manner that ensures the protection of the physician and the patient, and hence the patient avoids the scourge of harms caused by the medical errors.

With seeking to the establishment of a specialized judiciary, or at least the composition of the judges in this very complex area of the criminal accountability for the medical errors.

Ankara

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed yesterday to expand Ankara’s operation in a

Kurdish enclave in northern Syria eastward, toward the frontier with Iraq.

His comments, during an address to local leaders of his ruling-party in Ankara, appeared to be in defiance of the United States, which has urged Turkey to keep its campaign in Syria “limited in scope and duration” and to focus on ending the war.

Erdogan said the Turkish forces’ push into Afrin would stretch further east, to the Syrian Kurdish town of Manbij, and toward the border with Iraq “until no terrorist is left.”

Turkey considers the Syrian Kurdish forces, known as the People’s Protection Units or YPG, as a terrorist group because of their purported links to Kurdish insurgents within Turkey’s own border. Manbij is held by the Syrian Democratic Forces, which is dominated by the YPG. U.S. troops are not present in Afrin but are embedded with the SDF in other parts of Syria.

“We will clear Manbij of terrorists ... No one should be disturbed by this because the real owners of Manbij are not these terrorists, they are our Arab brothers,” Erdogan said.

We’re not ‘Wild, Wild West of Asia’: PhilippinesManila

Manila’s top diplomat has accused Human

Rights Watch of deceiving the international community

by making it appear “that the Philippines has become the Wild, Wild West of Asia where we just kill people left and right.”

Foreign Secretary Alan

Peter Cayetano demanded an apology yesterday from the U.S.-based rights group for reporting a larger number of drug suspects killed in

President Rodrigo Duterte’s crackdown on illegal drugs to back up a statement that human rights in the Philippines “is at its worst.”

Cayetano said Human Rights Watch falsely asserted that more than 12,000 people have been killed in the government’s crackdown when the national

police have recorded 3,968 deaths of suspects in more than 80,600 anti-drug operations since Duterte took power in 2016 until last November.

Moscow

The United States added Russian officials and

energy firms to a sanctions blacklist on Friday, days before details of further possible penalties against Moscow are due to be released.

Washington could release reports as early as Monday detailing the possibilities for expanding sanctions against Russia over its alleged meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, an accusation the Kremlin has repeatedly denied.

Russia is already under U.S. sanctions over its annexation of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 and support for separatist rebels fighting

in eastern Ukraine.The U.S. Treasury

Department said it had added 21 people and nine companies to the sanctions list, including some that had been involved in the delivery of Siemens gas turbines to Crimea.

It said Friday’s announcement was not related to the reports due on Monday.

“Today’s action is part of Treasury’s continued commitment to maintain sanctions pressure on Russia,” the department said in a statement. “This action underscores the U.S. government’s opposition to Russia’s occupation of Crimea and firm refusal

to recognize its attempted annexation of the peninsula.”

One of the people added to the list was Russian Deputy Energy Minister Andrey Cherezov, who was put under sanctions by the European Union over his role in the delivery of turbines to Crimea last year.

The list also now includes Sergey Topor-Gilka, head of the Russian engineering company

Technopromexport, as well as multiple subsidiaries of oil producer Surgutneftegaz , the Treasury Department said.

A spokeswoman for Rostec, which is already subject to U.S. sanctions and is the parent company of Technopromexport, said the company regretted that the main U.S. main tool in international relations was pressure and not dialogue. (Reuters)

Britain’s defence minister warned that Russia was

looking to damage the British economy by attacking its infrastructure, a move he said could cause “thousands and thousands and thousands of deaths”, The Telegraph newspaper reported.

Relations between Russia and Britain are strained. Prime Minister Theresa May last year accused Moscow of military aggression and in December, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said there was evidence showing Russian meddling in Western elections.

Britain has also scrambled

jets in recent months to intercept Russian jets near the United Kingdom’s airspace.

“The plan for the Russians won’t be for landing craft to appear in the South Bay in Scarborough, and off Brighton Beach,” defence minister Gavin Williamson, tipped as a possible successor to May, was quoted as saying by The Telegraph.

“What they are looking at

doing is they are going to be thinking ‘How can we just cause so much pain to Britain?’. Damage its economy, rip its infrastructure apart, actually cause thousands and thousands and thousands of deaths, but actually have an element of creating total chaos within the country.”

The Kremlin, which under Vladimir Putin has clawed back some of the global

influence lost when the Soviet Union collapsed, has denied meddling in elections in the West. It says anti-Russian hysteria is sweeping through the United States and Europe.[nL8N1PC38U]

Williamson said Russia was look at ways to attack Britain.

“Why would they keep photographing and looking at power stations, why are they looking at the interconnectors that bring so much electricity and so much energy into our country,” he was quoted as saying.

“If you could imagine the domestic and industrial chaos that this would actually cause.

What they would do is cause the chaos and then step back.”

“This is the real threat that I believe the country is facing at the moment,” he said.

The Russian Defence Ministry said on Friday that Williamson’s comments showed he had lost his understanding of what was reasonable, RIA news agency reported.

“It is likely he has lost his grasp on reason,” RIA quoted ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov as saying.

Canadian pharmaceutical billionaires were murdered

Toronto

Canadian pharmaceutical billionaires Barry

and Honey Sherman were murdered in a targeted killing, Toronto police said yesterday, but no one has been charged in their deaths.

Police disclosed that they were treating the case as a double murder, six weeks after a realtor found the Shermans dead. They were hanging by belts from a railing next to a swimming pool in their home, police said.

Toronto police homicide detective Susan Gomes said

Friday she was “not going to discuss suspects” but believed the Shermans were targeted.

In a statement, the Sherman family said the double homicide designation “was anticipated by the Sherman family.”

In the days immediately after the Shermans were found dead, multiple news organisations quoted police sources as saying investigators were operating a working theory that the deaths were a murder-suicide.

Barry Sherman founded Apotex Inc and built it into a pharmaceutical giant.

World Wetlands Day (WWD) is celebrated on 2nd February every year. It marks the date of the signing of the Ramsar

Convention on Wetlands on 2nd February 1971. WWD was celebrated for the first time in 1997. Every year there is a different theme, the international theme for World Wetlands Day 2018 is “Wetlands for a Sustainable Urban Future”.

A wetland is a land area that is saturated with water, natural or artificial, static or flowing, fresh, brackish or salty and include areas of marine water, the depth of which at low tide does not exceed six meters. The unique feature of wetland is its characteristic vegetation and soil conditions.

We need to know that more than a billion people make a living from wetlands. Livelihoods from fishing, rice farming, travel, tourism, and water provision all depend on wetlands. They are vital to us in many other ways. Wetlands play an important role in the processes that keep our landscapes healthy and productive. They support industries such as agriculture, fisheries, forestry and tourism by supplying water for crops, stock and people, maintaining water quality, providing habitat for commercial species and having cultural and recreational values. Wetlands host a vast variety of life, protect our coastlines, provides natural defenses against river flooding or storm surges and store carbon dioxide to regulate climate change.

Wetlands cover less than 10% of the earth’s surface, but are the source of almost 25% of the world’s productivity. Wetlands play a major role in the environment, mainly water purification, flood control and shoreline stability in addition to recreation. Wetlands are home to a wide range of plant and animal life and are called the sponge of the natural world as they absorb much of the pollution we produce. They filter out pollutants and slowly release clean water and oxygen back into the ecosystem.

Unfortunately, wetlands are often viewed as wasteland, and more than 64% of the world’s wetlands have disappeared since 1900. WWD is an annual opportunity to raise public awareness and promote the value of wetlands.

To celebrate WWD event, variety of programs like seminars, lectures, nature walks, sports, competitions, poster exhibitions, video films screening, slide shows based on the wetland, art and quiz competitions, painting competition, photography exhibition, community cleanup, interviews on radio and television are organized at the area, locality, city and national level at many places. The event celebration plays a great role in making the healthy wetlands in order to deliver the worth ecosystem service to benefit the common people. The demands of water required for growing crops, energy supply and various needs of the industry are also focused during the WWD celebrations. It is mainly celebrated to promote the proper use of wetlands and their resources.

The Ramsar Convention offers an international structure in order to globally support the conservation and sustainable management of the wetlands. It is celebrated to make aware the public, discus the value of wetlands, its beneficial aspects as well as to promote its conservation and use for enhancing the overall level of the human health, growth and development.

Bahrain is very keen in the protection of biodiversity and natural heritage and has established Al Areen wildlife reserve in 1976. The principal wetlands in Bahrain are coastal mudflats. The country became a party on the Convention on Biological Diversity in 1996, and the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in 1997. There are six protected natural reserves, the Al Areen park being terrestrial reserve others are marine protected areas namely Ras Sannad in Tubli Bay, Hawar Islands, Mashtan, Dohat Arad and Hayr Bulthama. The protection of the biodiversity is incorporated in Bahrain National Environment Strategy.

We need to appreciate the wetlands and avoid littering and discharging any hazardous effluents into water bodies including pesticides, fertilizers, detergents, soaps and chemicals as it will change the nutrient levels and may kill fish and destroy wetland ecosystem. Let us spread the message and enhance awareness on wetland conservation and protection.

The Ramsar Convention Secretariat has developed a number of downloadable World Wetlands Day materials for 2018. These materials can be found on the website. Groups and individuals are encouraged to adapt these materials for their own World Wetlands Day events and activities.

Trump warns Davos on

unfair trade“America First does not mean America alone”

Davos

U.S. President Donald Trump took his “America

First” message to the world’s elite yesterday, telling a summit of business and political leaders that the United States would “no longer turn a blind eye” to what he described as unfair trade practices.

Trump became the first sitting U.S. President to address the annual conclave of the rich and powerful at the Swiss ski resort of Davos for 18 years, closing the summit with a mostly upbeat speech that declared the United States “open for business”.

“Now is the best time to bring your money, your jobs, your businesses to America,” he said, singling out tax cuts and curbs to regulation.

He said he would always promote “America First”, as he expected other world leaders to do on behalf of their own countries, but added: “America First does not mean America alone. When the United States grows so does the world.”

But he swiftly turned to a theme of demanding tougher enforcement of trade rules.

“We will enforce our trade laws and restore integrity to the trading system. Only

by insisting on fair and reciprocal trade can we create a system that works not just for the United States but for all nations,” Trump said.

“The United States will no longer turn a blind eye to unfair trade practices,” he said. “We cannot have free and open trade if some countries exploit the system at the expense of others.”

His speech was mostly met by polite applause, although he drew some jeers and whistles during a question and answer session, when he attacked the news media: “It wasn’t until I became a politician that I

realised how nasty, how mean, how vicious and how fake the press can be,” he said. While he has a record of opposing trade agreements involving multiple countries, he said the United States would seek bilateral deals with individual states. That could include members of a Trans-Pacific trade agreement from which he has withdrawn, he said.

Before his trip to Davos, Trump imposed 30 percent tariffs on imported solar panels, among the first unilateral trade restrictions made by the administration as part of a broader protectionist agenda.

British lawmakers considering coup if local elections go badly: report

London

Lawmakers in British Prime Minister Theresa May’s

Conservative Party are considering another attempt to oust her if the local elections go badly in May, the Guardian reported.

The newspaper said lawmakers were growing increasingly frustrated with what they saw as a lack of ideas coming from the government, and criticised a botched reshuffle and a changing strategy on Brexit.

It cited one former minister as saying May would be vulnerable after the local elections in May if they go badly.

“She’s on very thin ice,” the newspaper quoted one unidentified lawmaker as saying.

Oldest human fossil outside Africa discoveredA human fossil found in Israel substantially

shifts the estimated timeframe for when humans first left Africa, suggesting they did so approximately 40,000 to 50,000 years sooner than previously thought.

Before this discovery the earliest modern human fossils found outside of Africa were those estimated to be between 90,000 to 120,000 years old.

Researchers, led by Israel Hershkovitz from Tel Aviv University and Rolf Quam from Binghamton University, State University of New York, describe their discovery in a paper published Thursday in the journal Science.

The fossil, an upper jawbone with several teeth, was found at a site called Misliya Cave in Israel, one of several prehistoric cave sites

located on Mount Carmel.Dating techniques applied to

archaeological materials and the fossil itself suggest the jawbone is between 175,000-200,000 years old, pushing back the modern human migration out of Africa by at least 50,000 years.

The archaeological evidence reveals that the inhabitants of Misliya Cave were capable hunters of large animals. They controlled the production of fire and used Early Middle Paleolithic stone tools, similar to those found with the earliest modern humans in Africa.

This discovery is consistent with studies based on ancient DNA that an earlier migration occurred, before 220,000 years ago, of modern humans out of Africa.

N. Korea exported

coal via Russia?

Paris/London/Moscow

North Korea shipped coal to Russia last year which

was then delivered to South Korea and Japan in a likely violation of U.N. sanctions, three Western European intelligence sources said.

The U.N. Security Council banned North Korean exports of coal last Aug. 5 under sanctions intended to cut off an important source of the foreign currency Pyongyang needs to fund its nuclear weapon and long-range missile programmes.

But the secretive Communist state has at least three times since then shipped coal to the Russian ports of Nakhodka and Kholmsk, where it was unloaded at docks and reloaded onto ships that took it to South Korea or Japan, the sources said.

A Western shipping source said separately that some of the cargoes reached Japan and South Korea in October

last year. A U.S. security source also confirmed the coal trade via Russia and said it was continuing.

“Russia’s port of Nakhodka is becoming a transhipping hub for North Korean coal,” said one of the European security sources, who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of international diplomacy around North Korea.

Asked to respond to the report, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday that Russia abided by international law.

“Russia is a responsible member of the international community,” he told reporters on a conference call.

Interfax news agency quoted an unidentified official at Russia’s embassy to North Korea on Friday as saying Russia did not buy coal from North Korea and was “not a transit point for coal deliveries to third countries.”

Russia’s mission to the United Nations told the Security Council sanctions committee on Nov. 3 that Moscow was complying with the sanctions.

Two lawyers who specialise in sanctions law told Reuters it appeared the transactions violated U.N. sanctions.

Reuters could not independently verify whether the coal unloaded at the Russian docks was the same coal that was then shipped to South Korea and Japan. Reuters also was unable to ascertain whether the owners of the vessels that sailed from Russia to South Korea and Japan knew the origin of the coal.

The U.S. Treasury on Wednesday put the owner of one of the ships, the UAL Ji Bong 6, under sanctions for delivering North Korean coal to Kholmsk on Sept. 5.

It was unclear which companies profited from the coal shipments. (Reuters)

A junior member of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo

Abe’s government resigned yesterday after making a gaffe seen to make light of the burden borne by people on the southern island of Okinawa as a reluctant host to the U.S. military, media said.

The resignation of Fumiaki Matsumoto, deputy minister of the Cabinet Office, will likely give Abe a fresh headache as the scandal comes ahead of a key mayoral election in Okinawa.

When an opposition lawmaker asked Abe in

Thursday’s parliamentary session about a recent series of emergency landings by U.S. military helicopters in

Okinawa, Matsumoto heckled by saying, “How many people died from that?” Kyodo news agency said.

Matsumoto on Friday tendered a letter of resignation, which Abe accepted, Kyodo said. No one was immediately available for comment at Matsumoto’s office or at the Cabinet Office.

Many Okinawa residents associate the U.S. military presence with crime, pollution and accidents. A window fell from a U.S. helicopter onto a school sports field on the island last month, fanning safety concerns.

This is not the first time Abe has seen his minister resigning over missteps.

Two commercial satellites have been placed in orbit by

an Ariane 5 rocket but have yet to reach their correct position, Arianespace said Thursday, after mission control briefly lost contact with the craft in a rare malfunction.

The usually reliable European space workhorse blasted off at 7.20 pm (2220 GMT) from the Kourou Space Centre in French Guiana carrying satellites for Luxembourg’s SES and the United Arab Emirate’s Yahsat in the first launch of the year for Arianespace.

For nearly 30 minutes mission controllers were left on tenterhooks when

the rocket lost contact in what CEO Stephane Israel described as an “anomaly”.

But the team later received good news when the satellites chirped back into radio contact.

“Both satellites were confirmed separated, acquired and they are on orbit,” Arianespace said in an updated statement after the initial lift-off scare.

The French-headquartered company said a tracking station in Brazil was unable to locate the craft shortly after ignition of the rocket’s upper stage.

“This lack of telemetry lasted throughout the rest of

powered flight,” the statement said. But both satellites were later “communicating with their respective control centres”.

But a source told AFP the satellites did not detach from the rocket in the correct place after the craft followed an “imperfect trajectory”.

Arianespace said they were currently “repositioning the satellites in the right place using their propulsion systems” adding that their current status was “reassuring after strong concerns”.

Israel had earlier tweeted that the initial launch had been “flawless”.

The SES satellite, built by

Airbus in the UK, weighs more than four tonnes and is carrying both telecoms equipment as well as a NASA platform designed to explore the boundary between Earth’s atmosphere and space.

Yahat’s Al-Yah 3 satellite weighs in at 3,795 kilogrammes and also carries telecommunications equipment.

Since it was founded in 1980, Arianespace has put more than 550 satellites into orbit including for Europe’s Galileo GPS system. The company posted sales of approximately 1.3 billion euros ($1.6 billion) in 2017. (AFP)

Principal of St Christopher’s School, Ed Goodwin

OBE, has been presented with an award in recognition of his ‘Outstanding Individual Contribution to International Education’ at a prestigious ceremony in London, UK.

The BISAs (British International School Awards) provides the opportunity for British international schools to share best practice, creative endeavours, community participation and innovation. Mr Goodwin was delighted yet ‘speechless’ with his award as the winner in this category is only unveiled on the night of the awards.

Ed Goodwin: “I attended the

award ceremony thinking that my only reason to be there was to hear whether St Chris had won the Safeguarding Initiative of the Year award. The first award of the night was the “Outstanding Individual Contribution to International Education” category; as I listened Trevor Rowell read out a description of the winner’s career, it gradually dawned that it might be me! I was still absolutely dumbfounded when my name was read out. I then had to say a few words in acceptance and, for me, the most important part of that was to acknowledge that whatever has been achieved has only been possible with the support and dedication of

so many people I have worked with over the years”.

Mr Goodwin, along with Head of Junior School, Wendy Bataineh, attended the ceremony, which was held on 22nd January 2018 at the Grand Connaught Rooms in Covent Garden, London, to represent St Christopher’s who were nominated for the award of “Outstanding Initiative to Support Student Safeguarding”.

Ed Goodwin’s services to education were also recognized in 2015 when he was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours for services to education across the Middle East. He received his award from HRH Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace.

Actor Ryan Reynolds has joked he just discovered he had a second daughter - 16-month-old Ines - with wife Blake Lively.

The proud parents also have a three-year-old daughter James and he has left his Twitter followers laughing with a trademark quip about his family, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

Taking to social media, he teased: “Nothing better than the simple joys of finding 5 bucks in an old pair of pants or discovering my wife and I had a second daughter over a year ago.”

T o n g u e - i n - c h e e k tweets are nothing new for Reynolds or his fans.

He is often seen posting deliberately outrageous messages regarding his family and career. (IANS)

Actor Casey Affleck has withdrawn from presenting the Best Actress Award at the upcoming Oscars.

Affleck notified the Academy that he will not be attending the event either, a source told deadline.com.

“I’ve heard that Affleck did not want to become a distraction from the focus that should be on the performances of the actresses in the category and that is why he made the proactive move.

“He was in a no-win situation, with all the attention surrounding the #MeToo movement.

The specter of Affleck presenting would have created controversy,” said the source.

Affleck has been mired in controversy after allegations of inappropriate behaviour resurfaced before he won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in “Manchester By the Sea”. (IANS)

Kelly Clarkson is an American singer, songwriter and actress. She rose to fame in 2002 after winning the inaugural season of the television series American Idol, which earned her a record deal with RCA Records. Clarkson’s debut single, “Before Your Love/A

Moment Like This”, topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and became the best-selling single of 2002. It was followed by the release of her debut studio album, Thankful (2003), which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart.

An urban road movie set and shot among the Arab community in the Israeli city

of Nazareth, Wajib (“duty”) is a nicely low-key comedy-drama of fangled family and community ties from Palestinian writer-director Annemarie Jacir.

Built foursquare around the charm and skill of co-leads Mohammad and Saleh Bakri, father and son onscreen and off, it could be helped along the way to theatrical exposure if picking up a prize or two in the main competition at Locarno.

Even if the Golden Leopard jury looks elsewhere, however, plentiful further festival play is a given for this accessible and genial glimpse into a complex and sometimes fraught area of the Middle East, as provided by one of the region’s leading female

filmmakers. Bethlehem-born, Saudi-raised, New York-educated Jacir made waves with her Cannes-bowing 2008 debut Salt of This Sea, and followed up with When I Saw You (2012), skillfully imagining a child’s eye view of the 1967 Six-Day War.

She’s worked with charismatic leading man Saleh Bakri on all three of her features, though here he takes a bit of a back seat to his veteran dad Mohammad, who spends most of the film at the wheel of his beloved, well-worn Volvo estate car as grouchy, sixtysomething teacher Abu. Accompanied by his son Abu Shadi, an architect who lives in Italy, Abu drives around the streets of Nazareth following the local tradition of hand-delivering invitations to the imminent wedding of his daughter Umal (Maria Zreik). Singer Beyonce Knowles is a “very involved” mother to her children and always makes sure she spends “a ton of time” with her kids.

The 36-year-old musician has daughter Blue Ivy, 6, and twins Rumi and Sir, 7 months, with her husband and rapper Jay-Z, and although she is often busy with her successful career, she makes sure to spend plenty of time with her brood, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

“Beyonce is spending a ton of time with her twins and is a very involved mom,” said a source.

And even when the “Halo” singer does have her hands full, big sister Blue Ivy is always on hand to help her mother look after her younger siblings. (IANS)

Make way guys, Jerry Maguire aka Tom Cruise is on Instagram finally.

The 55-year-old Hollywood star officially joined the social media platform on Thursday and in not even 24 hours, he has got more than 660k followers.

Cruise wasted no time and kicked off his Insta-journey with a big announcement.

Sharing a black and white picture of a film slate, he revealed the title of ‘Mission: Impossible 6’, which will be ‘Mission: Impossible - Fallout’. The photo also teased a release date of Summer 2018. “Get ready,” he captioned it.

For his second post, Cruise chose to give a sneak peek of the upcoming film, where he shared a photo of himself, hanging off a helicopter as it flew through the air. (TOI)

Actress Rachel Weisz has said she never thought she would be a married woman one day.

The 47-year-old actress, who tied knot with Daniel Craig in 2011, said it was never an ‘ambition’ of hers to marry until she met Craig.

“I don’t think mine’s particularly exceptional apart from that we’re both in the public eye. But I never thought I would get married. It was not an ambition of mine. It was the opposite,” Weisz said.

“I couldn’t relate to romantic comedies - marriage seems to be the whole point of them. Then it just happened, happily, at a more mature moment,” she added. (PTI)

You’re likely to hit that magic spot with someone today in which you can almost read each other’s thoughts. You may know exactly what that person is going to say before he or she says it. You may also find that your mind is working so quickly that while someone is trying to make one point.

It’s time to put away the sentimental feelings for the day and move to something new. Stop pulling out old photo albums and crying about past experiences. You will only succeed in sinking into a puddle of tears that you can’t pull yourself out of. Instead, this is a day to look to the future and plan for new experiences that you can enjoy with the people you love.

Let the genius within you come out and play. You may feel like some sort of inventor who has wild ideas that could help to revolutionize the future. Bring these ideas into the open and see what kind of response you get from the people around you. Cutting-edge concepts are likely to appeal to you the most. These are the ones that you should pursue and follow.

You may get frustrated when your list of tasks for the day just does not seem to get any shorter. More than likely, this is due to unforeseen circumstances and unexpected interruptions that you basically have no control over. Don’t get upset at yourself because of things you can’t change.

Because of your well-mannered attitude and socially minded outlook, you may normally be reluctant to make a stand with an outlandish idea or draw attention with an unusual outfit or hairstyle. Today is a day to be an individual in all aspects of the word. Prove that you are by doing something unexpected that shakes up the crowd.

Don’t be surprised if you’re scolded by people who are upset about the way you’re handling certain things in your life. Most likely, the people who criticize you the most are the ones who understand you the least. They are probably on a completely different wavelength than you, and it isn’t your job to try to change them, nor is it your responsibility to change your ways because of them.

You may find yourself flying high for no particular reason. If you aren’t, stop and examine the situation. More than likely, any emotional discomfort you feel is due to a lack of personal freedom in one way or another. Perhaps you’re feeling too tied down emotionally or too restrained mentally. Perhaps you need to get out of your current situation entirely.

This is a good time for you to subscribe to some sort of magazine or newsletter that will keep you abreast of current events and developments in a field or hobby that interests you. The operative word of the day is “new.” Keep your mind fresh with news that sparks your interest and gives you the inspiration you need to keep striving for the goals you have set for yourself.

Drink plenty of water in order to keep your system properly hydrated. Water is the most important part of your diet, and it’s likely that you aren’t drinking nearly enough. You are highly sensitive today so taking care of yourself is the best thing you can do. Otherwise you might act emotional and too easily manipulated.

You probably have the desire to take charge, and you certainly have the capability, so what are you waiting for? Stop sitting around waiting for someone else to make a decision. By the time the others are done arguing and vacillating about which direction to go, you will already have travelled miles and miles down the road. Your heart wants you to take a strong, independent stance.Remember that no one can make you feel inferior without your consent. It might seem as if others are trying to show you up today with their knowledge about the world and how it should be run. Don’t let them talk you into believing that your thoughts and ideas are any less valid than theirs. At the same time, it’s important for you to stay open-minded and accepting of other people’s ideas.

If you’re still using the old shovel and rake out in the fields, now is the time to upgrade. Get that big piece of machinery that will plow all the acres in no time. New Delhi

Ten Southeast Asian leaders watched a parade

and stunt performances as India celebrated Friday’s anniversary of its national constitution taking effect.

Marching bands, floats, military hardware, camels and stunt performers on motorbikes were paraded from the president’s palace through the tree-lined roads of central Delhi.

Flags of the Southeast Asian group of countries fluttered at the 90-minute parade. The celebrations also included aerial displays and floats from Indian states.

India’s Constitution came into effect on Jan. 26, 1950. It won independence from British colonialists in 1947.

Leaders from Vietnam, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Brunei, Malaysia, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Indonesia were invited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to commemorate the 25th anniversary of ASEAN-

India ties.Singapore Prime Minister

Lee Hsien Loong said there was “significant potential” for expanding trade and economic cooperation between India and ASEAN.

“Southeast Asia and India together represent a quarter of the world’s population, about 1.8 billion people, and a combined GDP of more than 4 and a half trillion US dollars,” he said.

A declaration at the end of the summit on Thursday reaffirmed the importance of promoting maritime safety and security, freedom of navigation and overflight in the region. It also underlined the lawful uses of the seas and maritime commerce and called for peaceful resolutions of disputes.

In 2016, French President Francois Hollande was the guest of honour at India’s Republic Day parade. In 2015, former President Barack Obama viewed the display.

Legazpi

A Philippine volcano which has repeatedly

disgorged fountains of lava, ash and molten rock and driven more than 78,000 villagers from their homes remains swollen with magma and could erupt destructively, an official said Friday.

In its nearly two weeks of erupting, Mount Mayon in the northeastern province of Albay may have ejected roughly 30 percent of its magma but its swollen sides indicate more molten material may have risen near the crater ahead of a

potentially more powerful blast, said Renato Solidum of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

“We still have a significant amount within the volcano as it is still inflated,” Solidum told reporters in Legazpi city, Albay’s capital, where life went on normally within sight of the cloud-shrouded volcano.

“It is possible that it can be transformed into a more explosive phase ... where the actual explosion will be more powerful than what is being shown right now,” he said. (AP)

As of now crude prices has consolidated around $70 a barrel and analysts are already turning bullish revising their earlier forecasts upwards. Do you think oil, as they say, is heading towards $80?

The Spanish government has declared Venezuela’s

ambassador in Spain ‘persona non grata’ following an equivalent move by the Venezuelan government on Thursday, government spokesman Inigo Mendez de Vigo said yesterday.

The Venezuelan ambassador must leave Spain within the next 72 hours according to diplomatic protocol, de Vigo said during a news conference following the weekly cabinet meeting.

“The principle of reciprocity in diplomacy implies that we give the same treatment that they’ve given to the Spanish

ambassador; declare them ‘persona non grata’ and give them 72 hours to leave the country,” he said.

Venezuela said on Thursday it was expelling the Spanish ambassador from Caracas in response to Spanish “aggressions”. The decision came days after the European

Union imposed sanctions on senior officials of the socialist government.

On Friday, the European Union condemned Venezuela for expelling the Spanish ambassador and called for the decision to be reversed and diplomatic relations to remain in place.

The Paris Zoological Park has been evacuated

and closed after dozens of baboons escaped their enclosure.

As zookeepers raced to round up the animals, armed police surrounded the popular attraction and sealed off nearby roads.

About 50 baboons were reported to have got out and congregated around the Grand Rocher, the fake rock centrepiece of the zoo, on Friday morning. Most had been rounded up and sent back to their shelters a few hours later, but four remained on the loose.

Officials at the zoo said

the animals had not come in contact with the public as they had remained in areas inaccessible to visitors.

Members of the public had been evacuated as a precaution because baboons could be unpredictable “especially when stressed”. “They’re stronger than us,” they added.

The emergency services were called, and keepers, vets and a team carrying tranquilliser darts were on the scene in minutes and surrounded the animals.

The zoo said it was confident the remaining animals would be persuaded to return to their enclosure.

“The dominant males have already gone back,” an official said.

The park in Vincennes covers a 14.5-hectare area on the eastern edge of the French capital. It reopened in April 2014  after a €133m (£116m) facelift. Clever landscaping, including fake rocks and boulders, acts as a  trompe-l’œil  to disguise that the site’s 1,000 animals and 180 species are in captivity.

The Grand Rocher, which was built to conceal two water reservoirs and resembles the  backdrop  to a King Kong movie, dominates the skyline and is the symbol of the zoo. (The Gaurdian)

Adelaide

Travis Head, promoted to the top of the order, led Australia to a drought-

breaking win over England in the fourth one-day international in Adelaide yesterday.

Replacing injured opener Aaron Finch, Head anchored a shaky Australian run chase with a polished 96, falling just shy of a deserved century and with victory imminent.

England were dismissed for 196 after being sent in to bat in bowler-friendly conditions, losing four of their top six batsmen for ducks as the possibility of a record low score in one-day cricket briefly loomed.

In reply, Australia reached the modest target with 13 overs to spare, finishing on 197 for seven, but the chase was not without concerns as they struggled to win their first game in the five-match series and turn around their dismal recent one-day form.

England had already secured the series by taking an unbeatable 3-0 lead in Sydney last Sunday, and that result had left the current World Cup holders with just one win in their past 11 completed ODIs.

Head looked certain to notch his second limited-overs century, but pulled a short ball from Mark

Wood straight to Eoin Morgan at mid-on, having faced 107 balls and hit 15 fours.

That England were able to post any sort of competitive total was quite remarkable given their horror collapse in the early overs.

On Australia Day, it was all the home side as the tourists lost five wickets with just eight runs on the board.

Steve Smith had sent them in to bat for the second successive match, this time in humid conditions which favoured seam bowlers.

Their lowest total of 86 looked in danger until all-rounder Chris Woakes came to the rescue.

In the end, solid resistance from Woakes

(78) along with Morgan and Moeen Ali (33 each) -- and Tom Curran (35) -- enabled England to scramble to a decent total. (AFP)

Ogier mistake allows Tanak to close in

Monte Carlo

Sebastien Ogier’s Monte Carlo Rally lead is down

to 14.9 seconds after a mistake yesterday afternoon allowed Ott Tanak to close in.

Tanak had already taken six seconds out of Ogier’s advantage on the loop’s first stage, but then began to lose all that time and more to Ogier in heavy rain on the next stage.

Just when it looked like his lead would grow to over 45s, Ogier spun on the exit of a hairpin and went into a ditch while trying to recover.

Spectators immediately jumped in to assist and Ogier was able to get back on the

road having lost around half a minute.

That brought Tanak to within 19s of the lead, and the Toyota driver then outpaced his 2017 World Rally Championship team-mate by another 4s on the day’s finale to get Ogier’s cushion down to under 15s.

Dani Sordo remains third in the leading Hyundai, inching clear of a closing Esapekka Lappi again when the rain intensified.

Sordo’s advantage over Lappi is now 10.2s, while Jari-Matti Latvala has caught his countryman and Toyota team-mate and is now just 0.2s from taking fourth place. (Autosport)

Uneven pitch leaves Test match in doubtJohannesburg

On their most glorious day of cricket on this tour of

South Africa, India closed in on a rare Test win in conditions that required courage, skill and some luck, but one blow too many to the batsmen forced the umpires to take the players off the field with South Africa 17 for 1 chasing an improbable 241.

South Africa were scheduled to bat for 65 minutes before stumps, but the day’s play did not get that far, with the umpires taking the players off after Dean Elgar was struck on the grille of his helmet by a short, steeply rising ball from Jasprit Bumrah.

It was the fourth time Elgar had been hit on the body in his brief innings. The captains met the match referee after the incident, but the future of the match remained unclear.

In the post-match press conference, India manager Sunil Subramaniam said the match officials would make a call on the match on the fourth morning. He said India had no complaints about the pitch,

contending that it had behaved the same way on all three days, and that they would want the game to continue.

This may have had a lot to do with the match situation, engineered by some brilliant batting. Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane and M Vijay batted out of their skins, putting behind them the blows they took from the inconsistent and exaggerated bounce, going through periods of excessive seam movement, putting every scoring opportunity away.

The lower order, led by Bhuvneshwar Kumar with a composed 33 and Mohammed Shami with a whirlwind 27, then all but put the matter beyond South Africa, setting the hosts 241 to win. (espncricinfo)

to 3456.Dhoni as a captain

scored 3454 runs for India in 60 Test matches while his successor Kohli took just 35 Tests to better the record. Dhoni was on top of the list after overtaking the legendary India opener Sunil Gavaskar, who scored 3449 runs in 47 Tests as captain. (TOI)

Barcelona hold off Espanyol

Barcelona

Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi scored the goals as Barcelona’s established stars kept new signing Philippe Coutinho out of the limelight in qualifying for the semifinals

of the Copa del Rey with a 2-0 win over city rivals Espanyol.Barcelona were behind after the first leg but went through 2-1 on aggregate thanks to

first-half goals from Suarez and Messi. They join Valencia, Sevilla and Leganes in the last four, the latter after they had

dumped Real Madrid out of the competition on Wednesday evening.Barcelona, keen to reverse the 1-0 scoreline from the first leg, began the game with

intent, forcing a series of early corners.Suarez proved too keen and was shown the first yellow card of the game seven

minutes in after a clash with Marc Navarro. But a minute later the Uruguayan made amends as he gave the home side the lead, drawing them level on aggregate in the tie. Aleix Vidal

created the chance and his cross from the right was headed in by Suarez at the far post.

Espanyol almost hit back straight away but Jasper Cillessen was able to save a shot from Gerard Moreno, who had been

set up by Sergi Darder.Barcelona looked to press their advantage but Messi’s shot from 40 yards, with 19 minutes on the clock,

was high and wide of the Espanyol goal. The visitors’ Esteban Granero wasted a chance, from Victor Sanchez’s cross,

when he shot wide of the goal from inside the area four minutes later.

And just a minute later Messi extended Barcelona’s lead and put them ahead in the tie for the first time when his shot from

outside the area beat Pau Lopez in the Espanyol goal.

The Argentinian’s goal was the 4,000th scored by Barcelona at the Nou Camp in official competitions.

Suarez then had a shot blocked, again following good work by Vidal, as the home side looked for a third in an

attempt to kill the game off before the break.Messi was denied the chance to add to his tally

when he was flagged offside when running on to a through ball from Sergio Busquets just before

half-time.Espanyol made a change at the break with Leo Baptistao coming on for Darder and it

almost paid off at the start of the second half.

but was saved by Cillessen.Moreno shot off target as

Neymar will become world’s best playerLondon

Neymar will become the best player in the world

at Paris St Germain, boss Unai Emery has said.

The 25-year-old only joined the Ligue 1 side in the summer but has been linked with a move to Real Madrid at the end of the season

Madrid are said to be planning a major recruitment drive and want to make the Brazilian their number one signing.

But Emery insists Neymar’s future remains at Parc des Princes.

“Neymar will become the best player in the world and he will be here at Paris St Germain, I am sure,” he said at a press conference previewing the game with Montpellier.

Emery has also described Dani Alves’ three-match suspension as unfair.

The right-back has

been sanctioned after his red card for squaring up to referee Clement Turpin in Sunday’s Ligue 1 defeat to Lyon.

“Dani Alves has a winning mentality and brings a lot of character to this team. I find

his sanction of three unjustified suspension matches.

“After, we have confidence in Thomas Meunier. He had a

great progression last season, he also evolves a lot this season alongside D a n i A l v e s . ”

Zidane still motivated to manage crisis-hit MadridLondon

Embattled Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane said

yesterday that he would resign immediately if he felt he was no longer able to get through to his players at the crisis-hit club.

The stumbling European and Spanish champions were sent packing from the King’s Cup by Madrid minnows Leganes after losing 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday.

They sit fourth in the league standings, a remarkable 19 points adrift of runaway leaders Barcelona.

“If I thought my message wasn’t getting through I would leave here tomorrow,” Zidane told a news conference ahead of Real’s game away to Valencia on Saturday.

The Frenchman was only recently hailed as a master manager of Madrid’s famously tempestuous dressing room for leading the team to historic back-to-back Champions League triumphs as well as ending a five-year wait for a

league title.(Eurosport)

Timea Babos of Hungary and Kristina Mladenovic

of France became the first players from their respective countries to lift the Australian Open women’s doubles crown.

Babos and Mladenovic embraced midcourt after beating Russian pair Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina 6-4, 6-3 in yesterday’s final at Rod Laver

Arena.It’s the first Grand Slam

title for Babos, who was a runner-up to Serena and Venus Williams at

Wimbledon in 2016.Mladenovic won the 2016

French Open doubles with compatriot Caroline Garcia, and the pair combined to

reach the US Open final later that year.

“Our spirit and our friendship together really helped through the two weeks because in the beginning we had some tough moments, some tough matches playing not to the level what we gave today,’’ Babos said.

Mladenovic said she hoped

to carry the doubles success into her singles this year. “It’s something you cannot describe in a way, it’s so emotional. When you live a moment like this, there’s no reason why it couldn’t (also) work in singles. Obviously, it’s a lot of confidence, just positivity for me,’’ she said.

The 24-year-old players were

reunited at Melbourne Park in their first tournament together since the 2015 end-of-season WTA Finals, where they fell in the round-robin stage.

“We really separated because of the (Rio) Olympics. We actually talked about it (reunion) at the US Open,’’ Babos said. (AP)

Edmund commits to Davis Cup tie against SpainLondon

Kyle Edmund has given Great Britain’s Davis Cup team a boost by

committing to travelling to next week’s first-round tie against Spain.

The 23-year-old struggled with a minor hip problem during his semi-final defeat to Marin Cilic at the Australian Open on Thursday, a result that halted his stunning run in Melbourne. Edmund made it clear after the match that he hoped to go to

Marbella, where he is due to lead Britain’s team for arguably the toughest test in the competition, away to Spain on clay.

It is a tight turnaround, with Edmund due to arrive back in London on Saturday and the team set to fly to Spain on Monday to begin their preparations, but the Yorkshireman’s spokesman confirmed he is hopeful of being ready to play.

Edmund’s great leap forward in Australia came after a season where his

ranking was stuck in the high 40s. Now he will sit in the mid-20s and has already ticked a lot of the boxes he hoped to achieve in 2018.

“I didn’t want a third year of being around that same ranking,” he said. “I know my ability was better, but there’s no point just saying you can be better. That was a goal. Of course doing well in the bigger events, and I wanted to win a lot more closer matches. (Eurosport)

McHugh beaten in semi-finalMelbourne

British junior Aidan McHugh missed out on a place in the

Australian Open boys’ final as he went out in three sets to Chun Hsin Tseng of Chinese Taipei.

The 17-year-old trailed 3-6 4-2 when rain halted the semi-final.

Play was moved to Melbourne Park’s indoor courts, and Tseng broke serve at 4-4 in the decider before serving out a 6-3 5-7 6-4 win.

“It was literally a handful of points,

that’s why it’s disappointing,” the Scot told BBC Radio 5 live.

McHugh was trying to become the first British junior to reach a major final since Katie Swan in Melbourne in 2015. He is mentored by British number one Andy Murray and coached by Toby Smith, brother of Davis Cup captain Leon Smith. McHugh will now focus on the Futures tour, the lowest level of the senior game, for the rest of 2018, while returning to the juniors for

the other Grand Slam tournaments.“I really enjoy playing in the

Slams,” he said.Asked about his relationship with

Grand Slam champion Murray, he said: “He sends texts after some of my matches and tells me well done.

“He follows it really well and it’s good having him keeping an eye on me. He’s really interested in how I do, which is really nice and motivates me to do even better.” (BBC)

Bahrain-Merida’s leader Vincenzo Nibali admits

that he knows as much as the average cycling fan when it comes to racing the Tour of Flanders this April 1.

The Italian will race Belgium’s most famous race with an eye on returning to win in the future and preparing for the Tour de France‘s cobble stage later in the summer.

Complicating matters, he must get to Bilbao that

evening to start the Vuelta a País Vasco the next day. The experience will be entirely new for the 33-year-old, 13 seasons a professional.

“I know nothing about Flanders, just what I’ve seen on TV!” Nibali said.

“I’ve never done it, I want to try it and do it. It’ll be a great experience like the year Bradley Wiggins took a stab at Paris-Roubaix. He fell in love and wanted to win it afterwards.”

Bahrain’s Nibali is the only

Grand Tour star in recent years who has added a one-day Monuments to his palmarès. He won Il Lombardia twice and placed third in Milan-San Remo and second in Liège-Bastogne-Liège.

The other two Monuments, Flanders and Paris-Roubaix, differ drastically with their cobbles and favour the more powerful riders over the lightweight climbers.

“I’m not doing Roubaix! That’s for sure, I’ve already did my bit in the 2014 in the

worst possible conditions,” said Nibali, who won the 2014 Tour de France thanks in part to the Roubaix stage.

“It’s a big thing, completely new. I don’t know the route, I don’t know the race, I don’t know how it is. It’s my idea to race, I wanted to do it to see if I can return in the future and take a serious swipe at it and anyway, it’s a great way to add to my confidence for the Tour’s pavé stages in 2018.” (Cyclingweekly)

Deontay Wilder is confident he can both knock out Anthony Joshua

and halt the recent progress of British boxing as the pair are rumoured to fight later this year.

The 32-year-old Wilder, who is nicknamed ‘the bronze bomber’, holds an impressive record of 39 wins, 38 by knockout, compared to Joshua’s 20 wins and 20 knockouts.

Wilder also thinks that more money is to be earned if the potential 2018 bout is held in America, as opposed to the UK.

In a 90/10 split, Joshua collected a purse expected to be £10 million, with his 2017 opponent Carlos Takam taking £750,000 from their November Cardiff fight.

Wilder interestingly earned £1.1 million in his November win against Bermane Stiverne, and turned down Eddie Hearn’s claims he tried to persuade British heavyweight Dillian Whyte into the ring in the same month.

Wilder reportedly overlooked a deal that would have been worth around £3 million - what would have been his biggest purse to date - but he has refuted those claims.

Wilder is set to face Luis Ortiz (28 wins, 24 K.O’s) as the Cuban wants to contest the American’s WBC belt again, whilst IBF and WBA holder Joshua will face New Zealander Joseph Parker (24 wins, 18 K.O’s) in a historic unification battle at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on March 31. (givemesport)

Britain’s Jamie Donaldson carded a three-under-par

69 to maintain a one-shot advantage on a fog-delayed day two of the Dubai Desert Classic yesterday, with two-time winner Rory McIlroy well-placed in the chasing pack.

Donaldson, who fired a blistering 62 in the opening round, did not hit those heights again at Emirates Golf Club but did enough to set the clubhouse target at 13-under-par heading into the weekend.

He attributed his return to form to not touching the clubs for almost two months during the winter break.

“It was time to have some family time with them for a couple of months and it was great,” Donaldson said

“Come out for the season nice and fresh and you’re reacting more to what you’ve turned up with, as opposed to slogging yourself to death over the winter.”

China’s Li Haotong, who finished one shot off the lead, carded a second successive 66, with South Africa’s Branden Grace a shot further back following a 65.

The afternoon starters were unable to complete their second rounds before the play was halted for darkness at 1345 GMT, with four-times major winner McIlroy three off the lead with seven holes still to play.

After a delay of two hours and 50 minutes due to early morning fog, Donaldson claimed a birdie on the third and then made a six-footer on the eighth to make the turn at 33 and get to 12-under.

Federer reaches

finalMelbourne

Roger Federer has reached the Australian Open final after young

pretender Chung Hyeon was forced to retire with the Swiss leading 6-1 5-2 in a one-sided semi-final in Melbourne.

The defending champion - chasing his sixth title in Melbourne at the age of 36 - broke Chung’s serve three times on Rod Laver Arena without breaking sweat in the first set as the South Korean player was utterly dismantled by the Swiss player’s stunning all-court game.

He will face Croatian sixth seed Marin Cilic in the final on Sunday in

a repeat of last year’s Wimbledon final that Federer won in straight sets.

World number 58 Chung was trailing 5-2 in the second set when he retired a game after receiving treatment for blisters with Federer on the cusp of a two-set lead after only one hours and two minutes on court.

Federer will chase a 20th major in his 30th Grand Slam final since 2003.

“I thought the first set was kind of normal, I couldn’t tell what was going on with my opponent,” said Federer.

“In the second set, I could feel he was getting a bit slower, fighting with the blister. It hurts a lot.

“It’s better to stop, that’s why this one feels bittersweet. Credit to him for trying so hard again today.”

In what was their first meeting on tour, the outclassed Chung could only hit six winners with 19-times Grand Slam winner Federer unearthing 24 winners in a match that felt more like a training exercise.

Federer b r o k e for 3-1 with a dipping b a c k h a n d pass and when Chung needed treatment on his foot blisters at 1-4 his hopes of becoming the first South Korean to reach a grand slam final looked completely hopeless. Chung managed to win one more game but threw in the towel. (Eurosport)
