‘Not back to square one’Bahrain can handle challenges amid sudden spike in number of COVID-19 cases: Dr Cheriyan

• American Mission Hospital CEO says battle against pandemic remains ‘success’

• Physicians very well positioned, well-equipped to provide treatment services

• National medical taskforce plays key role in containing local effects of pandemic

• Booster shots most effective way to stop severe Omicron variant symptoms

Staff Reporter TDT/Manama

Amid increasing panic fol-lowing a rise in the num-ber of COVID-19 patients,

a renowned authority in med-icine and leading doctor in the Kingdom has dismissed fears of progress in the fight against the pandemic getting undone.

Dr George Cheriyan, the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Medical Officer of American Mission Hospital, said the out-right battle against COVID-19 in the Kingdom remains a success although there are challenges to be addressed on a frequent basis.

Dr Cheriyan’s views attains immense significance in light of new daily cases exceeding 300. As of now, the Kingdom has a little over 2,000 active cases.

“The scientific world has made great progress in their fight against the COVID-19. The

medical community has es-tablished tracing and tracking methodologies along with treat-ment modalities, which are well in place. There is no starting again from square one.

“This time, the physicians are very well positioned to handle

the challenges. They are well-equipped to provide a range of treatment services.”

Speaking on the emergence of new variants, Dr Cheriyan said booster shots are the only remedy.

“COVID-19 booster shots have

proved to be the most effective way to stop severe Omicron var-iant symptoms in South Africa and the United Kingdom, where a maximum number of cases were reported.”

Dr Cheriyan said fully-fledged

research is ongoing to put stand-ard drug therapies in place.

“Treatment with Sotrovimab has been found to decrease the risk of disease progression for high risk patients suffering with mild-to-moderate COVID-19 in-fection.”

Sotrovimab binds the spike protein in turn blocking the vi-rus from getting attached before entering human cells. The pro-cess stops the virus from repli-cating in the body.

Praising the Kingdom for achieving the booster shot mile-stone, Dr Cheriyan highlighted the role of the National Task-force for Combating COVID-19 in containing the local effects of the pandemic.

“We are having a Yellow Alert here and I urge all citizens and residents to strictly adhere to the protocols to win this battle against COVID-19.”

The Kingdom moved to Yel-low Alert Level last week as a precautionary measure against the spread of new Omicron vari-ants. The Kingdom has reported only a single case of Omicron.

According to the Ministry of Health, the Yellow Alert de-cision follows the Kingdom’s approach of prioritising public health in line with the guide-lines issued by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The national medical task-force has already urged individ-uals to visit health centres and receive booster jabs, and there is also no requirement to make an appointment.

Individuals who have already received their booster shots can follow the procedures of Green Alert level.

According to Health Ministry statistics, 826,455 individuals have received booster doses in the Kingdom.

Amwaj has ‘overtaken’ Manama in property transactionsStaff Reporter TDT/Manama

In a development signalling a major shift in the real estate

sector, the pre-COVID statistics released by the Survey and Land Registration Bureau shows that Amwaj has taken the lead over Manama when it comes to prop-erty transactions.

Amwaj constituted 5.39 per

cent of the total property trans-actions across the Kingdom while Manama was closely behind at 5.01 per cent. Hidd comes third at 4.96 per cent.

The share of other leading areas were Diyar Al Muharraq (3.62pc), Madinat Hamad (2.83pc), Sadad (2.31pc), Malkiya (2.20pc), Dur-rat Al Bahrain (2.20pc), Tubli (2.16pc) and Muharraq (2.14pc).

Speaking to The Daily Trib-

une, Hazeeth Hari of Mikal Real Estate said the trend could be attributed to ongoing urban de-velopment, comparatively less prices and increase in real estate investments from the part of ex-patriates in the Kingdom.

“If you see, urban develop-ment is actually happening in Amwaj and neighboring areas. Iconic projects like Marassi Al Bahrain are being implemented

in the area. Dragon City, a prime shopping destination for both expatriates and citizens, also lies in the proximity.”

Hari said the price variation was also a motivation factor be-hind the ‘Amwaj influx’.

“A two-bedroom apartment in the Manama-Juffair area would cost nearly BD60,000 while a similar property could be bought in Amwaj for BD50,000.

The price difference is definitely a major factor,” Hari said.

Increasing investments by expatriates also served as an impetus for Amwaj to take the lead over Manama.

“There is an increasing trend among the expatriates - inves-tors or potential investors to buy properties in less-crowded areas. And this is undoubtedly benefitting Amwaj,” Hari said.

TDT | Manama

A female student from the University of Bahrain won

the Excellence International Award in the 20th “Chinese Bridge” competition for Chi-nese language and culture for foreign university students.

Siraj Hussain, representing the Department of Architec-ture through the Confucius Institute at the university, out-performed about 70,000 Chi-nese language learners from around the world.

Around 125 winners from 101 countries represented their countries to compete in the final round on 22 September. The prizes for the final round were announced on 30 Octo-ber.

Siraj is the first contestant from the Kingdom of Bahrain to participate in the “Chinese Bridge” semi-finals from the Asian continent.

She completed the Chi-nese Knowledge Quiz by an-swering questions online and submitted a three-minute Chinese-language video clip, which was shown on the China Central Radio’s short video platform, and registered 8.038 million views.

Siraj thanked her teachers at the Confucius Institute for helping combine her special-isation at the university with her personal interests, and present classical or heritage architecture in Bahrain to a global audience in the Chinese language. She also discussed the characteristics of classical architecture in Bahrain and China.

The Confucius Institute

pointed out that Siraj was “a good and distinguished rep-resentative of cultural ex-change.”

The Center for Language Exchange and Cooperation of the Ministry of Education in China offered Siraj a scholar-ship to learn Chinese for one semester, and this scholarship is valid for three years.

“We expect the student to seize this precious opportunity to study the Chinese language, learn more about the concepts of architecture and architec-tural design patterns in China, and return with some of the beautiful charm of China to the Kingdom of Bahrain,” the Institute said.

The “Chinese Bridge” com-petition for Chinese language and culture is a large-scale international competition sponsored by the Cooperation Centre for the Exchange of Chinese and Foreign Languag-es of the Chinese Ministry of Education.

This year, the regional com-petitions were held during the months of June and July, and about 7,0000 university stu-dents from all over the world took part.

Figures as of closing

News in brief u France is seeing a tsunami of Covid-19 infections, with 208,000 new cases recorded over the past 24 hours, a national and European record, Health Minister Olivier Veran told lawmakers yesterday. France has been breaking Covid-19 records repeatedly over the past few days, with Tuesday’s 180,000 cases already the highest for a country in Europe, according to data on Covidtracker. Every second, two people in France are testing positive for Covid-19, Véran said, adding that the situation in hospitals was worrying because of the Delta variant, while the Omicron coronavirus variant continued to spread.

u Indonesia yesterday said it will let dozens of Rohingya refugees come ashore after protests from locals and the international community over its plan to push them into Malaysian waters. At

least 100 mostly women and children aboard a stricken wooden vessel off Aceh province were denied refuge in

Indonesia, where authorities on Tuesday said they planned to push them into the neighbouring Southeast Asian country after fixing their boat. After a day-long meeting on Wednesday between officials in the coastal town of Bireun, Jakarta backtracked and said the refugees’ boat would be towed to shore on humanitarian grounds.

u The Philippines has lifted a four-year ban on new open-pit mines, an official said yesterday, in a bid to revitalise the country’s coronavirus-battered economy slammed by activists as “short-sighted”. The move sees the Philippine government reverse a ban imposed in 2017, when the then-environment minister blamed the sector for widespread ecological damage. Manila has since reversed course, encouraging mining investments to shore up government revenues as lockdowns and quarantine restrictions ravaged the economy.

u Indonesia will allow a boat packed with Rohingya which had become stranded off its coast to dock in the Southeast Asian country, its security ministry said yesterday, after calls from aid organisations to allow the vessel to seek refuge. Local officials in Aceh, a province on the western island of Sumatra said on Tuesday that they would provide the roughly 120 passengers on board with food, medicine and water, but would not allow them to seek refuge in Indonesia, despite international pleas to do so. The stranded boat had been at risk of sinking within days, two fishermen told Reuters on Wednesday. Indonesia is not a signatory to the 1951 U.N. Convention on Refugees and is predominately seen as a transit country for those seeking asylum to a third country.

‘Tsunami’ of COVID-19 cases around world raises testing, quarantine fears• Latest COVID-19 surge being driven by Omicron variant

• WHO chief says concerned by ‘tsunami of cases’

• France, UK, Italy, Spain all report record daily cases

• US also sees record daily average over past seven days

• Studies in South Africa, UK, Denmark suggest Omicron less severe

Reuters | Sydney/Rome

Global COVID-19 infections hit a record high over the past seven-day period,

Reuters data showed yesterday, as the new Omicron variant raced out of control, keeping workers at home and overwhelming testing centres.

Almost 900,000 cases were detected on average each day around the world between Dec. 22 and 28, with myriad countries posting new all-time highs over

the past 24 hours, including the United States, Australia and many

in Europe.Almost two years after China

first alerted the World Health Organisation (WHO) to a cluster of “viral pneumonia” cases of un-known origin in the central city of Wuhan, the regularly mutat-ing coronavirus is still wreaking havoc, forcing numerous govern-ments to rethink quarantine and test rules.

Although studies have suggest-ed the Omicron variant is less deadly than some of its predeces-sors, the huge numbers of people

testing positive mean that hospi-tals in some countries might soon be overwhelmed, while business-es might struggle to carry on op-erating because of workers having to quarantine.

“Delta and Omicron are now twin threats driving up cases to record numbers, leading to spikes in hospitalisation and deaths,” WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Tedros told a news briefing on Wednesday.

“I am highly concerned that Omicron, being highly transmis-

sible and spreading at the same time as Delta, is leading to a tsu-nami of cases.”

France, Britain, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Cyprus and Malta all registered record num-bers of new cases on Tuesday, while the average number of dai-ly COVID-19 cases in the United States hit a record 258,312 over the past seven days, according to a Reuters tally on Wednesday. The previous peak was a figure of 250,141 registered in early Janu-ary this year.

US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Rochelle Walensky, in television interviews on Wednesday, said she expected many more U.S. cases ahead.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that 90% of patients ending up in intensive care had not received booster vaccines, which medics say is the best pro-tection against Omicron.

“The Omicron variant contin-ues to cause real problems, you’re seeing cases rising in hospitals, but it is obviously milder than the Delta variant,” Johnson said.

New daily infections in Aus-tralia spiked to nearly 18,300 on

Wednesday, eclipsing the pre-vious pandemic high of around 11,300 a day earlier.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said his country need-ed “a gear change” to manage overburdened laboratories, with long walk-in and drive-in queues reported in a number of areas.

Testing bottlenecks have also built in Europe, including Spain where demand for free COVID-19 testing kits provided by Madrid’s regional government far out-stripped supply, with long queues forming outside pharmacies.

‘I JUST WANT TO GO HOME’A number of governments were

also increasingly worried by the huge numbers of people being

forced into self-isolation because they had been in contact with a coronavirus sufferer.

“We just can’t have everybody just being taken out of circulation because they just happen to be at a particular place at a particular time,” Australia’s Morrison told reporters.

Italy was expected to re-lax some quarantine rules on Wednesday over fears the coun-try will soon grind to a halt giv-en how many people are having to self-isolate protectively, with cases doubling on Tuesday from a day earlier to 78,313.

However, China showed no let up in its policy of zero tolerance to outbreaks, keeping 13 million people in the city of Xian under rigid lockdown for a seventh day as new COVID-19 infections per-sisted, with 151 cases reported on Tuesday.

“I just want to go home,” said a 32-year-old mechanic, who was in Xian last week for a business trip when the city was effectively shut off from the outside world.

No cases of Omicron have been announced in Xian so far.

Blinken names former US official Rina Amiri as special envoy for Afghan womenReuters | Washington

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken yesterday named

former US official Rina Ami-ri as a special envoy for Af-ghan women, girls and human rights.

Amiri has spent two dec-ades advising governments, the United Nations and think tanks on issues related to Afghanistan. Under former President Barack Obama, she served a senior adviser to the US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Blinken will also name Ste-phenie Foster, a State Depart-ment veteran, as a new senior adviser for women and girls on the Afghan relocation efforts, a source said.

The appointments come more than four months af-ter the Taliban overran the country as the former West-ern-backed government col-lapsed and the last US troops withdrew after 20 years of war.

Since then, the Taliban have curbed the rights of women and girls, banning most of the former from working and most of the latter from attending schools in what US officials decry as back-tracking by the Islamist extremists from as-surances they gave to observe human rights.

The Biden administration has come under fire from women’s rights groups for failing to ensure safe passage for activists and others that had long been targeted by the Taliban.

Women inside the Biden administration traded con-

cerned emails and text mes-sages behind the scenes after the lightning fast Taliban take-over in mid-August and the subsequent chaotic U.S. exit from the country, according to multiple sources inside and outside the administration.

At the time, Amiri told Reu-ters the process of evacuating women at risk had been a dis-aster.

Biden had made clear ear-ly on in high-level policy dis-cussions that concerns about women’s rights would not sway his decision to exit Af-ghanistan, despite promising during the campaign to forge a gender-sensitive foreign pol-icy, she said.

In their latest move, the Taliban earlier this week de-creed that women traveling more than 45 miles (72 km) should be accompanied by a close male family member. The decree also banned the playing of music in vehicles.

Violence erupts after Palestinian president visits Israel• Israeli defence minister Gantz hosted Abbas at his home

• Israeli coalition split on issue of Palestinian statehood

• Palestinians also divided between Abbas and rival Hamas

AFP | Jerusalem

An Israeli was wounded in a shooting attack on the Gaza border on Wednes-

day, the military said, after a rare visit to Israel by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas drew condemnation from the enclave’s Hamas rulers.

The Israeli military said it re-sponded to the shooting with tank fire, targeting Hamas posts in the northern Gaza Strip. Gaza health officials said three Palestinian farmers were wounded.

Israel’s Defence Minister Ben-ny Gantz hosted Abbas in his home late on Tuesday, the West-ern-backed Palestinian leader’s first such visit to Israel in more than a decade, although it sig-nalled few prospects for any re-sumption of long-stalled peace negotiations. Following their talks, the Israeli Defence Ministry announced a series of what it de-scribed as “confidence-building measures” that would ease the entry of hundreds of Palestinian business people to Israel.

In Gaza, Hazem Qassem, a Hamas spokesman, said that by meeting Gantz, Abbas was “deep-ening Palestinian political divi-

sions” and encouraging accom-modation with “the occupation”, a term the Islamist militant group uses to describe Israel.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the shooting attack from Gaza, which the Is-raeli military said slightly wound-ed the civilian. The border has been largely quiet since an 11-day war between Israel and Gaza mil-itants in May.

Abbas and Gantz last met in Au-gust, in the occupied West Bank. Palestinian official Hussein al-Sheikh said that at Tuesday’s talks they discussed the “importance of creating a political horizon” for resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Gantz, in his summation of the meeting on Twitter, made no men-tion of a peace process, stalled since 2014 after U.S.-backed talks collapsed. Palestinians seek to

establish a state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, with East Jerusa-lem as its capital.

“We discussed the implemen-tation of economic and civilian measures, and emphasised the importance of deepening secu-rity coordination and prevent-ing terror and violence - for the well-being of both Israelis and Palestinians,” Gantz wrote.

Israel’s multi-party govern-ment is deeply divided over the statehood issue. Palestinian rival-ries remain strong, with Hamas, which has fought four wars with Israel, running the Gaza Strip.

In a move that could ease travel for thousands of Palestinians, the Defence Ministry said Gantz ap-proved registration as West Bank residents for some 6,000 people who had been living in the terri-tory, captured by Israel in a 1967 war, without official status.

Another 3,500 people from Gaza would also receive residen-cy documentation, the ministry said.

The meeting followed several Palestinian attacks on Israelis in recent weeks in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Palestinians also complain of attacks by Israeli settlers.

UAE daily COVID-19 cases climb above 2,000

Reuters | Dubai

Daily coronavirus infec-tions in the United Arab

Emirates, the Gulf region’s tourism and commercial hub, have risen above 2,000 for the first time since June.

Authorities yesterday re-corded 2,234 new infections in the past 24 hours, without breaking down the cases by variant.

The UAE, which is hosting the Dubai Expo 2020 world fair, announced its first known case of the coronavirus variant Omicron earlier this month.

Daily cases had fallen below 100 in October but started to climb again in December as tourists flocked to Dubai in the holiday period.

The UAE, a federation of sev-

en emirates, saw daily infec-tions hit a record near 4,000 last January amid the peak tourism season as millions of visitors travelled to Dubai to escape lockdowns at home.

Abu Dhabi this week reim-posed restrictions requiring those entering the emirate from within the UAE to show proof of vaccination and neg-ative PCR results, as of Thurs-day. It also instituted remote learning for the first two weeks of the new school term.

Dubai, which is hosting the Expo until the end of March and whose economy relies heavily on the travel indus-try, has not yet reintroduced restrictions that were largely lifted in mid-2020.

Mask-wearing in public has remained mandatory in the UAE.

in Europe.Almost two years after China

first alerted the World Health Organisation (WHO) to a cluster of “viral pneumonia” cases of un-known origin in the central city of Wuhan, the regularly mutat-ing coronavirus is still wreaking havoc, forcing numerous govern-ments to rethink quarantine and test rules.

BisB contributes to the development of vital sectorsTDT | Manama

Bahrain Islamic Bank (BisB), a leading provider of Sharia

compliant integrated financial solutions in the Kingdom of Bah-rain, is proud to have played a key role in contributing to the development of the national economy by supporting vari-ous development projects in the Kingdom, namely in housing, educational, health, telecom-munications and infrastructure related projects.

Bahrain Islamic Bank is hon-oured to be part of a consorti-um of local and international financing institutions to finance several governmental projects focused on the development of national infrastructure, with a total projects value exceeding BD1.5 billion. The Bank’s contri-bution is subsequently expected to have significant impact on the local economy and labour mar-ket conditions in the Kingdom.

Bahrain Islamic Bank has also supported the development of several healthcare and educa-tional projects, financed with total project value of more than BD15 million. In addition, the Bank’s Corporate and Institu-tional Banking department re-

mains keen on supporting social housing projects, providing fi-nancial support to projects with a total value of over BD200 mil-lion, positively impacting the pace of construction work.

The Bank has also played a sig-nificant role in the development of the information technology and telecommunications sectors through its participation in pro-jects with a total value of over BD 25 million. This is a reflection of the Bank’s mission to improve user experience, positioning the Kingdom of Bahrain as a leader in the technology and communi-cations sectors amongst devel-oped countries.

The Corporate and Insti-

tutional Banking department has additionally played a vital role in the development of the SME sector, whose revenue ac-counts for a large segment of the GDP, resulting in the increase of employment rates through the creation of jobs. The Bank was also able to increase its SME portfolio to approximately 24% of total corporate assets. With this achievement in stride, the department aims to increase the SME portfolio to 30% of to-tal corporate assets by the year 2025.

With regards to sustainability, the Bank has adopted many in-itiatives to reduce negative im-pact on the environment, most

notably to decrease paper waste and carbon emissions; largely achieved through its pioneer-ing implementation of state-of-the-art digital banking solutions including a full-fledged mobile application for corporates. The department has also focused on encouraging companies and institutions to follow suit with its environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) outlook by putting into motion an initiative that incentivises corporates that do so with pref-erential profit rates.

BisB continues to enhance the banking experience for its val-ued customers by simplifying

their banking transactions, re-fining services, and introducing innovative change to the sector. This can be seen through the Bank’s commitment to digital transformation across all ser-vices. Most notably, the Bahrain Islamic Bank is the first Bank in the region to allow corporate clients to open accounts through its digital banking mobile appli-cation, subsequently improving user experience and reducing the turnaround time for opening accounts.

The bank has navigated through the pandemic stead-fastly, shifting its workforce remotely, setting a target for 70% of employees to work from home, ensuring their health and safety as well as that of their families. Additionally, under the directives of the Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB), the Bank provid-ed customers the option to de-fer loan payments. This allowed customers the benefit of allo-cating their financial resources with added ease in the event of any hardship brought on by the spread of the pandemic. The Bank also offered all clients the option to restructure their credit facilities to cope with the uncer-

tainty that is expected after the CBB deferment directive expires in December 2021.

Commenting on the occasion, Jawad Humaidan, Acting Chief of Corporate and Institution-al Banking at BisB, expressed his pride in the department’s achievements over this period, noting, “We are proud of the tremendous efforts put forth by the Corporate and Institutional Banking department, which has played a notable role in devel-oping the economic and social landscape in the Kingdom, es-pecially over the past few years. This comes as part of our ongo-ing commitment to playing an active role with social respon-sibility, enacted through initi-atives designed to develop the national economy, as well as sup-port institutions and companies working towards the betterment of key sectors such as education, health and housing. At BisB, we place our customers, their satis-faction, and aspirations above all else, considering them our most valued asset. It is with this out-look that we continually strive to develop our services, ultimately simplifying their banking expe-rience and enriching their lives.”

Most bourses fall in line with global shares• Saudi stock market was volatile yesterday

• Crude prices, a key catalyst for financial markets, edged higher

Reuters

Most stock markets in the Gulf ended lower yesterday in line with

global shares, as investors po-sitioned their portfolios for the new year and grappled with in-creasing Omicron coronavirus cases globally.

Saudi Arabia’s benchmark in-dex (.TASI) dropped more than 1%, dragged down by a 1.4% fall in Al Rajhi Bank (1120.SE) and a 1.7% decrease in Saudi Basic Industries - SABIC (2010.SE).

The Saudi stock market was volatile yesterday since investors remained uncertain as the rise in oil prices provided strong sup-port while the increasing COV-ID-19 cases raised new doubts

over the sanitary situation, said Farah Mourad, senior market

analyst of XTB MENA.Crude prices, a key catalyst

for the Gulf ’s financial mar-kets, edged higher as optimism

refused to be beaten down by concerns around the impact of Omicron on global economies.

In Dubai, the main share in-dex (.DFMGI) fell 0.8%, snap-ping four consecutive sessions of gains, weighed down by a 1.1% drop in top lender Emirates NBD Bank (ENBD.DU) and a 0.7% decline in Dubai Islamic Bank (DISB.DU).

The United Arab Emirates has approved emergency use of Sinopharm’s protein-based COVID-19 vaccine and it will be available to the public as a boost-er dose starting January 2022, the health ministry said.

The UAE, a federation of seven emirates, on Tuesday reported 1,846 new coronavirus cases, up from 68 on Dec. 2. Author-ities, which did not provide a breakdown for each emirate, said around 91% of the 10 mil-lion population had been fully vaccinated.

In Qatar, the benchmark (.QSI) closed flat, as gains in en-ergy stocks helped cap losses in banking shares with Qatar Fuel rising 1.1%, while Qatar In-ternational Islamic Bank was down 1.1%.

Abu Dhabi’s index (.ADI), however, added 0.7%, helped by a 1.6% increase in the In-ternational Holding Company after its unit Multiply Group (MULTIPLY.AD) signed a bind-ing commitment to invest 275 million dirhams ($74.88 mil-lion) in global visual content creator and marketplace Getty Images.

Multiply shares were up 1.7%.Outside the Gulf, Egypt’s blue-

chip index (.EGX30), eased 0.1%, with Egypt Kuwait Holding (EKHO.CA) losing 2.9%.

Turkey’s lira slides 5%; cenbank says it will monitor forex risks• Lira has weakened 14% since end of last week

• Central bank to reassess policy framework in Q1

• Inflation expected to have surged above 30% in December

Reuters | Istanbul

The Turkish lira weakened for the third consecutive

day on Wednesday, tumbling 5.6% and eating further into the huge gains made the previous week, as worries persisted over soaring inflation and unortho-dox monetary policy.

The losses gathered pace after little initial reaction to the cen-tral bank’s (CBRT) 2022 policy document, in which it said it will monitor risks related to the foreign exchange market and do

what is necessary to ensure it runs smoothly.

The lira plunged as far as 12.5 by 1253 GMT. Despite surging more than 50% last week fol-lowing state-backed market in-terventions, it has lost 40% of its value this year.

“The CBRT has no commit-ment to any exchange rate level and will not conduct FX buying or selling transactions to deter-mine the level or direction of the exchange rates,” the bank said.

It said it would monitor close-ly the impact of its policy de-cisions in the first quarter and

“the policy framework will be reassessed in order to create a foundation for sustainable price stability.”

The lira surged last week after billions of dollars worth of state-backed market interventions and a government move to cover FX losses on certain deposits, restoring the currency back to its mid-November levels.

The recovery came after Pres-ident Tayyip Erdogan unveiled an incentive for savers to con-vert forex deposits into lira, un-der which their losses incurred due to any erosion in lira value

during the deposit period would be reimbursed.

Hasnain Malik at Tellimer said this provided a free cur-rency hedge to domestic savers if the lira depreciates.

“But this also implies high-er quasi-fiscal costs should the credibility of this hedge or the currency weaken,” he said.

According to traders’ calculations, the central bank’s net forex

reserves, excluding swaps, fell some $8 billion last week, with most of the fall in the first two

days of the week. They were down $17-$18 billion as of last Friday

since the start of the month, when the bank began its direct interventions. The central bank

has cut its policy rate by 500 basis points to 14% since September.

Musk exercises all of his stock options expiring next yearSan Francisco

Tesla Inc Chief Executive Elon Musk has exercised

all of his options expiring next year, signalling an end to his stock sales that trig-gered a fall in the share price of the world’s most valuable carmaker.

Musk said last week that he would reach his target of sell-ing about 10% of his stake in Tesla “when the 10b prepro-grammed sales complete,” like-ly referring to his options-re-lated stock sales.

Since early November, he has exercised options expiring next year and sold a portion of Tesla stock to pay tax under a “rule 10b5-1” trading plan set up in September.

With the option exercise on 1.6 million shares on Tuesday, he has exercised all of the op-tions on 22.8 m shares, which are due to expire in August. He also sold 934,090 shares for $1.02 billion to pay for taxes, the filings showed.

“This rule 10b5-1 trading plan was completed on De-cember 28, 2021,” Tesla said in filings on Tuesday.

Tesla shares lost about a

quarter of their value after Musk in November asked his followers on Twitter if he should sell 10% of his hold-ings. They have rebounded to $1,088.47, but are still be-low the record closing high of $1,229.91 in November.

Next James Bond: Henry Cavill on track to overtake Tom Hardy in 007 raceDaily Express | London

Fans are still upset after ex-periencing the brutal end-

ing of No Time To Die earlier this year. During the events of the movie Daniel Craig brought his journey as 007 to an emotional end, but James Bond must live on. For now, we aren’t exact-ly sure who will be taking over as the spy, but To m H a r d y has been top of the lead-erboards for months.

Leading book-m a k e r s L a d -b r o k e s h a v e given Hardy an incredible 4/1 on becoming Bond in the near future.

While he is massively popular in the Bond odds, he has confessed he will not be commenting on the casting just

yet. He said last year: “If I men-tion it, it’s gone.

“ Yo u k n o w, there’s a saying

amongst us in the fraternity of act-ing, and in the fellowship of my peer group, that if you talk about it you’re auto-matical ly out

of the race. So I can’t possibly comment on that one!”

He may not be guaranteed the

spot, however, as Superman actor Cavill has become a firm favourite in the bettings.

Cavill currently has an im-pressive 6/1 from Ladbrokes, placing him well ahead of many other Hollywood stars. And The Witcher star’s latest comments on joining the 007 franchise were actually quite surprising. When asked about joining the series Cavill said: “Time will tell. You don’t know which direction they want to

take Bond in and so I like to say that everything’s al-

ways on the table.” (Via The Sunday Times) De-spite how popular the British star is, however,

he still has to beat a number of fel-

low thespians to the punch, i n c l u d i n g o n e f r o m Bridgerton.

Nicole Kidman: I put rocks in my own pockets when filming Virginia Woolf drowning sceneThe Telegraph | Los Angeles

Nicole Kidman won an Os-car for her portrayal of troubled writer Virginia

Woolf in The Hours - and now it has emerged that her own de-pression helped her play the part authentically.

In an interview the actress said she felt “removed, depressed, not in my own body” when filming

the 2002 drama in which she plays the feminist novelist.

She did not use a stunt dou-

ble for the scene, which depicts the writer’s deliberate death by drowning in the River Ouse in

1941.The Hours, released at Christ-

mas 2002, was directed by Brit-ish director Stephen Daldry and based on a novel by Michael Cun-ningham. Ms Kidman won an Oscar for her portrayal of Mrs Woolf.

Speaking to Jon Wilson on BBC Radio 4’s This Cultural Life, Ms Kidman said: “I don’t know if I ever thought of the danger,

I think I was so in her. I mean, I put the rocks in my pocket and walked into the river. Over and over again.

“I probably don’t con-sider danger enough. And I think I was in a place myself at that time that was removed, de-pressed, not in my own body.

“But I’m fine and I’m just going to do everything I can to get better ASAP and as soon as I’m cleared I’ll be back on stage heading to River City,” he added.

India strike early as South Africa start big chaseIndia secure big lead on day of 18 wickets, sets South Africa 305 to win first test

• Mohammed Shami’s five-for negates India collapse to Lungi Ngidi on full day of cricket

AP | Centurion

India set South Africa a tough target of 305 to win the first test and had struck early in

its push for victory to leave the Proteas 22-1 at tea yesterday on the fourth day.

Mohammed Shami, who ran through South Africa with 5-44 in the first innings, removed Aiden Markram in the second over and India was on its way.

India, the top-ranked team in test cricket, is seeking a long-awaited first test series win in South Africa and will take a big step towards that if it can close out victory in the first match of the three-test series.

South Africa captain Dean Elgar held on to be 9 not out at the tea break alongside Keegan Petersen, who was 12 not out.

But India sensed victory and the home team faced the pros-pect of getting another 283 runs on a tricky pitch in Centurion or batting out another four ses-sions for a draw.

India forged well ahead de-spite being bowled out for 174 in its second innings earlier in the day. India had already carved out a first-innings lead of 130 af-

ter it made 327 batting first and then bowled out South Africa for 197 in its first innings.

More than anything, India’s struggles in its second innings was an indication that the Su-perSport Park surface was get-ting more and more difficult to bat on. South Africa’s batsmen faced a stiff challenge against the likes of Shami and India spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who recovered from an ankle injury on the third day to take the new ball with Shami.

Rishabh Pant top-scored for India with 34 in its second innings, while Kagiso Rabada and test debutant Marco Jansen took four wickets each for South Africa to limit the damage and

give the home team a sliver of hope.

The entire second day of the series-opener was washed out by rain but the game has still progressed rapidly since then and India had more than enough time to force a win and take a crucial series lead.

All three tests will be played without fans because of COV-ID-19 and specifically the spread of the omicron variant in South Africa, where it was first iden-tified.

Organizers had initially planned to allow in a limited number of spectators but that was foiled by the emergence of the new variant.

Arsenal’s Arteta tests positive for Covid-19 for second time

AFP | London

Arsenal manager Mikel Ar-teta has tested positive for

Covid-19 for a second time and will miss the Premier League clash with leaders Manchester City on Saturday, the club said.

The 39-year-old Spaniard’s first positive test was in March 2020 which prompted English football to shut down as the pandemic took hold.

He is the latest Premier League manager to test posi-tive in the last few weeks fol-lowing Aston Villa’s Steven Gerrard and Patrick Vieira of Crystal Palace.

A club statement read: “Mikel Arteta will miss our match against Manchester City on New Year’s Day after testing positive for COVID-19.

“Mikel is isolating in line with Government guidelines and we wish him well.”

Arteta -- whose side have rebounded from a disappoint-ing start to rise to fourth place after winning their last five matches in all competitions -- is still expected to conduct his Thursday press conference.

“This is really disappoint-ing,” Arteta said, quoted by the BBC.

“I took the test after feel-ing poorly. I will be at work as

soon as I’m allowed.”Arsenal have closed the

club’s London Colney training ground and club staff who had recent contact with Arteta will now self isolate.

Assistants Albert Stuiven-berg and Steve Round will be in charge on match day.

The Gunners were without a number of players during their 5-0 win at Norwich on Sunday due to coronavirus, with Calum Chambers, Cedric Soares, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Ainsley Maitland-Niles among those infected.

Arsenal’s Premier League match against Wolves on Tues-day was postponed because their opponents had a surfeit of Covid cases.

On Tuesday England and Wales reported nearly 130,000 new coronavirus infections, a record daily tally as Omicron variant cases surge.

Liverpool need to improve before Chelsea clash, says Van DijkAFP | London

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk says he and his team-

mates need to “look in the mir-ror and improve” after the 1-0 loss to Leicester dealt a blow to their Premier League title prospects.

Van Dijk did not look for ex-cuses for the loss on Tuesday despite Leicester’s goal scored by Ademola Lookman coming from their only shot on target after Mohamed Salah missed a first-half penalty for Liverpool.

Liverpool -- who failed to score for the first time in 29 league matches -- will look to strike back in the title race at Chelsea on Sunday.

However, Van Dijk says the players need to reflect on why they under-performed against a Leicester side who were beaten 6-3 by Manchester City at the weekend.

“Everyone has to look in the mirror and improve,” the Dutch defender told Amazon Prime.

However, Van Dijk said it was no time to give up hope as other factors may still play a role in who is crowned champion.

“We’re in December. The sea-son is so, so long,” he said.

“You have seen it with Covid and injuries -- lots of things can change.

“There’s no point looking at (Manchester) City or Chelsea or the other teams around us.

We should look at our perfor-mance today and improve.”

Liverpool will also have to cope without Salah and an-other key player, Sadio Mane, for what could be as long as a month with both heading off for the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon after Sunday’s match.

Liverpool manager Jurgen

Klopp, though, is more con-cerned that his side rediscov-er their brio for the Chelsea match.

“It’s a big gap,” Klopp told the BBC. “To top that, Chelsea and us play against each other.

“It was not our plan to give City the chance to run away.

“If we play like tonight we cannot think about catching up with City.”

Klopp was bemused by the under-par performance and said finding an answer to that conundrum was his priority.

“If we play our football and we can win games, we can see how many points we can get and what that means,” the Ger-man said.

“I don’t have a proper expla-nation for tonight -- to find it is my main concern, not City.

Warner eyes one more crack at England in 2023AFP | Sydney

David Warner has hinted he is keen for one last Ashes

tour in 2023 to make amends for his failed campaign in Eng-land two years ago, drawing in-spiration from veteran seamer Jimmy Anderson.

The explosive Australian opener would be approaching 37 should he retain his place that long and in all likelihood would have joined the 100-Test club. He currently has 89 caps.

Winning in India is also on his bucket list before pulling up stumps on a Test career that has so far yielded 7,551 runs at 48.40.

“Winning the Ashes here was obviously a big one,” Warner said after Australia crushed England in the third Test in Melbourne to retain the Ashes.

“We still haven’t beaten India in India, that would be nice to do.

“And England away -- we had a drawn series (in 2019) but hopefully if I manage to get that opportunity, I might think about going back.”

England hasn’t been a hap-py hunting ground for Warner, who had a horror tour in 2019, when he managed just 95 runs at 9.50 from five Tests with Stu-art Broad dismissing him seven times.

“In terms of 2019 it was obvi-ously in England so he (Broad) was able to get the ball to come back into us and away from us,” said Warner, who has been a mainstay at the top of the Aus-

tralian order for a decade.“For me it was one of those

tours where I didn’t back my game plan and I went too de-fensive and I didn’t attack. That was my fault, and he bowled really well.”

Whether Warner can still be competitive into 2023 remains to be seen, although he has been written off previously and come roaring back, most recently at

the Twenty20 World Cup.He was dropped by his Indian

Premier League team Sunrisers Hyderabad ahead of the World Cup, leading some pundits to suggest his best days were over.

But Warner responded in the only way he knows, by scoring runs, and was named player of the tournament as Australia lifted the trophy.

He pointed to England’s An-derson, still going strong at 39, as an example of cricketers per-forming at their peak well into the twilight of their careers.

“James Anderson sets the benchmark for older guys these days, we look up to him getting on in our days,” Warner said after Anderson bowled beau-tifully in the Melbourne Test.

“For me it’s just about per-forming to the best of my ability and putting runs on the board.”

With the result, Ahli secured a league-and-cup double for the second consecutive year. They had also defeated Ma-nama in last year’s league championship series, which they sealed with a two-game sweep.

• Mohammed Hardan, Mahdi Humaidan and Ismaeel Abdullatif all on target for Khaldiya in victory against Hidd

• Najma goalkeeper Abdulla Alkaabi makes match-winning penalty and save in 22-kick shootout against Ahli

TDT | Manama

Al Khaldiya and Al Naj-ma made it through to the semi-finals of the

2021/2022 His Majesty the King’s Cup football tournament last night, following contrasting victories at the National Stadi-um in Riffa.

Khaldiya posted a resound-ing 3-0 win over Hidd in their round of eight clash, while Naj-ma edged past last season’s los-ing cup finalists Al Ahli 8-7 in a nail-biting penalty shootout after regular time finished dead-locked at 1-1.

Khaldiya and Najma now face off in one game of the final four, which has yet to be scheduled. They join cup holders Riffa and neighbours East Riffa in the semis.

Riffa and East Riffa had on Tuesday night booked their

berths in the next stage follow-ing their own wins on penalties.

In Khaldiya’s win last night, goals from Bahrain internation-als Mohammed Hardan, Mahdi Humaidan and Ismaeel Abdul-latif sent them through to the next round.

Hardan opened their account in the 32nd minute after his shot from the edge of the box was deflected into the net by Hidd’s Talal Juma Saad. Khaldiya then doubled their lead in the 57th after a brilliant one-two be-tween Humaidan and substitute Ahmed Al Qaseer. Humaidan had a one-on-one with Hidd goalkeeper Abbas Ahmed, and he did enough to send the ball into the net.

Then, in the 85th minute, Ab-dullatif applied the nail in the coffin after a brilliant through-ball from Humaidan left him with a clear path at goal, and he made no mistake in slotting the ball home. Al Qaseer had a chance to make it 4-0 in the third minute of stoppage time, but his penalty was saved by a diving Abbas.

Meanwhile, Najma and Ahli needed 22 attempts—11 apiece—in the shootout to decide the victor.

The result came down to the last two kicks, which were taken by Najma goalkeeper Abdulla Alkaabi and Ahli counterpart Abdulla Hasan Aldawadi. Alkaa-bi converted his shot, and then

saved Aldawadi’s penalty, which was poorly hit.

It was a disappointing end-ing for Aldawadi, who was able to make three saves and keep his team in the fight during the shootout.

Earlier in the contest, Najma and Ahli scored on either side of half-time.

Najma were first on the score-sheet after Salem Adel headed home off a long pass from near midfield in the 41st minute of play. That was enough to give his team the advantage heading into the break.
