His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa has been bestowed the prestigious Legion of Merit,

Degree Chief Commander, by outgo-ing US President Donald Trump in rec-ognition of HM’s remarkable efforts in strengthening the Bahrain-US friendship and solid partnership.

The US Embassy in Bahrain confirmed yesterday that HM the King had received the award for his “visionary leadership” in the region.

“His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa on receiving the Legion of Merit for his visionary leadership in the pursuit of peace and strengthening relations be-tween our two countries and across the region,” the US Embassy said in a tweet.

The legion of merit is a military award created to honour allied leaders in World War Two. It had gone into obscurity until it was revived by Trump, who last month also presented it to the prime ministers of Australia, India and Japan.

HM the King became the latest leader in the Middle East to be given the rare award by President Trump on his last day in office.

The award is granted by US presidents to foreign leaders in recognition of close ties and outstanding achievements.

It came days after the US named Bah-rain and the UAE as major security part-ners in recognition of the countries’ long-standing military co-operation.

12 Guard members pulled from Biden inauguration over ‘extremist ties’Washington

Twelve US Army National Guard members have been

removed from the presiden-tial inauguration security mis-sion after they were found to have ties with right-wing mili-tia groups or posted extremist views online, according to two US officials.

There was no threat to Presi-dent-elect Joe Biden, they said.

The officials, a senior intelli-gence official and an Army of-ficial briefed on the matter, did not say which fringe group the Guard members belonged to or what unit they served in.

Their removal from the mas-sive security presence at the na-tion’s capital comes as the FBI worked to vet all of the 25,000 National Guard troops headed to the area for Biden’s inauguration

Bahrain benefits from shift to ‘telemedicine’

UN report details effectiveness and challenges in switching to telecommunication mechanism during pandemic

• Kingdom preserving safety of patients and medical personnel

• Recommendations made to develop telemedicine as future industry

• Raising quality of healthcare and facilitating access to it necessary

TDT | Manama

Bahrain’s shift to telemed-icine during this time of pandemic has helped

deliver necessary healthcare services and preserve the safety of patients and medical person-nel, according to a report by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in the King-dom.

The report entitled “Physi-cal Health and Psychological Role of Telemedicine During the COVID-19 Pandemic in the Kingdom of Bahrain” provides an analysis on the impact of pan-demic on the daily life as well as on the physical and psychologi-cal health of individuals.

In particular, it outlines the benefits of using telemedicine mechanism during this global health crisis and ways to devel-

op it in the future.Dr Fatima Al Subaie, research

fellow at the Bahrain Centre for Strategic, International and Energy Studies (Derasat) and the principal investigator in the report preparation team, said: “Our results provide a better understanding of the psycho-logical effects of the pandemic on the population of the King-dom of Bahrain, the necessary measures in this context, and recommendations for develop-ing telemedicine for the public interest.”

The report states that the Kingdom’s inevitable switch to the practice of telemedicine has prevented the disruption of vital medical services in hospitals, resulted in the delivery of neces-sary care to all health cases, and led to achieving a better level of efficiency.

Other benefits of this mod-el practice include developing coordination and cooperation in the healthcare sector, and

redesigning models and proce-dures for joint work between service providers, which led to the launch of new services in the fields of insurance and drug delivery during these challeng-ing times.

However, the telemedicine experience encounters several challenges during the pandem-ic, most notably the absence of health insurance for some pri-vate sector telemedicine service providers, the difficulty of using technology for some patients and medical staff, and restric-tions on prescription for con-trolled psychiatric medications.

The report has made key recommendations such as the need to pay attention to the de-velopment of telemedicine as a future industry with social and economic benefits, and to set well-studied and effective standards for practising this field with the latest methods and technologies.

Likewise, it recommends the

need to employ smart digital applications more broadly in health care and services, and to continue interaction and coop-eration between all parties to the healthcare sector.

In general, according to the report, it is necessary to raise the quality of healthcare and facilitate access to it in the King-dom.

The report also shows that the population in Bahrain has gone through remarkable changes in behaviour and lifestyle, includ-ing exercise, as well as eating and sleeping habits, which have affected the ability of some pa-tients to self-care and manage diabetes. It notes that there has been an increase in visits of pa-tients from age between 18 and 45 years old to diabetes clinics.

There is a general decrease in patient visits to hospitals for fear of infection during the early stages of the pandemic.

Housing Ministry Assis-tant Undersecretary for

This came as an implemen-tation of an order by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister to distribute 5,000 housing units.

Dr Al Haidan said that the East Hidd apartments project is one of the main projects of

Ideal partners in recoveryGulf Air signs deal with Ras Al Khaimah International Airport to enhance connectivity

• High-ranking executives from both organisations have set their eyes on recovery and expansion

TDT | Manama

Slowly but surely, airways are starting to open up as COVID-19 restrictions are

gradually easing in some parts of the world, including the Gulf region.

In view of this, high-rank-ing executives from Gulf Air, Bahrain’s national carrier, and Ras Al Khaimah International Airport have set their eyes on recovery as well as expansion.

In a virtual ceremony, a Memorandum of Understand-ing (MoU) was signed by both organisations to build connec-tivity between Bahrain and Ras Al Khaimah, the northernmost emirate of the UAE.

Captain Waleed Al Alawi, Act-ing Chief Executive Officer of

Gulf Air, and Sanjay Khanna, CEO of RAK International Air-port, attended the event along with members of their respec-tive teams.

“We are always keen to ex-plore ways to enhance the con-nectivity between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the UAE,” Al Ala-wi said.

“As a Boutique carrier, we look forward to adding Ras Al Khaimah to our network of destinations. We are extreme-ly impressed with the facilities

that RAK International Airport provides, which will serve the high standards our passengers expect from Gulf Air.”

The deal also heralded a new phase of operations for RAK In-ternational Airport, which is quickly establishing itself as a major transport and logistics hub for the UAE.

Khanna said the aviation in-dustry has its eyes set on recov-ery following the difficult year of 2020.

“The airways are opening up

as COVID-19 restrictions gradual-ly ease, and passengers increas-ingly confident to take to the skies once again,” he said.

“With this in mind, we are delighted to sign this Memo-randum of Understanding with Gulf Air to set the stage for flight services between Bahrain and Ras Al Khaimah – along with the Northern Emirates – and en-hance Ras Al Khaimah Interna-tional Airport’s connectivity to destinations around the world.

“Gulf-state connectivity is a key tenet of our expansion strat-egy, and with its long history, commendable track record, and vast network, Gulf Air is an ideal partner for this mission aiming to build connectivity between the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah and the Kingdom of Bahrain.”

The move will allow resi-dents, expats, and tourists in the Northern Emirates of the UAE to connect to as far as the Philip-pines in the east and London in the west, he added.

In November, RAK Interna-tional Airport commenced pas-senger services with Indian val-ue carrier SpiceJet flying out of

Delhi, with Mumbai, Lucknow and Cochin added at the start of this year, along with increased frequencies from the Indian capital.

Gulf Air commenced oper-ations in 1950, becoming one of the first commercial airlines established in the Middle East.

ifa bin Ali bin Khalifa Al Khal-ifa yesterday received Ahmed Bukhawa, director of Informa-tion Technology and Electron-ic Systems Department at the Ministry of Interior.

During the meeting, the Governor affirmed that the governorate is keen to con-tinue its efforts to provide the best electronic services to cit-izens.

It is within the framework

of “digital transformation” and converting the services pro-vided by the governorate into electronic services, such as the smart office and the virtual council, as well as organising a series of virtual meetings and electronic communication packages.

Shaikh Khalifa bin Ali also discussed the possibility of adopting digital initiatives that aim to improve the level of distinguished services and transactions provided by the governorate, which would en-hance communication.

12-year-old Asian School Bahrain student turns authorTDT | Manama

A 12-year-old Bahrain resi-dent has had his first book

published.Indian Anikait Balan, who is

a Grade 6 student at The Asian School Bahrain, authored a fic-tion titled “The Magical Stone” and is now available for pur-chase through online shopping sites Amazon and Flipkart.

According to Anikait, “The Magical Stone” is the story of a hero who is selected as the human support to retrieve the stone for the king of his magical world. He takes us to a fantasy adventure where he gets a new friend named Segelle. His quest is to find a magical stone that holds an unbelievable power, which is stolen by Blitch who wants to take control of the kingdom.

Anikait was born in 2008, in the South Indian state of Kerala to U K Balan, a chef at the Royal Court, and Sreesha Balan. His parents describe him as a very obedient and energetic kid who spends most of his time reading, drawing and poetry.

“During his childhood days, he created a world of his own where his toys were playing dif-ferent characters having super-powers. He is gifted with a vivid intellectual vision and writing skill. This helped him to write a story created by his imagination where he portrays himself as the hero. Being a young author

he has his own limitations and flaws but that’s what makes the story more enjoyable.”

Renowned Indian writer M Mukundan called Anikait gift-ed, with good imagination and writing skill.

“Anikait Balan’s The Magical Stone is an interesting story. It reads well.”

“As the title suggests, it is a fantasy. He is gifted with a good imagination and writing skill. Children’s imagination stems from fantasy. We like to read magical stories because there are elements of fantasy in all of us, irrespective of our age.

“Reading the story with its flaws makes it more enjoyable because it reminds us that the author is a boy. As Anikait grows up, he should give up on fantasy and write realistic stories. There is a budding writer in him. We should encourage him. I give him my blessings.”

Noted Indian journalist and children’s author Roopa Pai also expressed her delight in the Bahrain student’s achieve-ment, saying: “I’m delighted to

hear that a 12-year-old is so keen on sharing the stories he has dreamed up in his head with the world that he has applied him-self to completing a manuscript, which is now being published as a book.

“Children are always dream-ing up fantasy worlds in their head, but few have the patience, commitment and passion re-quired to put it all down into a coherent story. I congratulate Anikait warmly on his effort and wish him all the best for his future. Whether he ends up becoming a writer or not, the dedication he has displayed in putting this book together will certainly stand him in good stead in all his endeavours.”

Acclaimed Indian writer and journalist Amrith Lal observed that though “The Magical Stone” is a 5,000 words short story written by a 12-year-old there are several elements in it to break any possible monotony in the narration.

“The beauty of the story is that it reads like one written by a 12-year-old,” he said.

“There is a lot of magic and fantasy in it, which is not un-usual for a young writer of the Harry Potter generation. We find kings and knights, witches, wizards and dragons fighting it out with scrolls and spells, and flights into fantastical gardens and palaces.

“Out there, it’s a battle to res-cue the magical stone that gives life to people, and our hero is the good guy, of course, entrusted with the mission of saving the stone, saving lives. The Mag-ical Stone is a short story, but Anikait has said it well. As if to break any possible monoto-ny in the narration, the writer has introduced devices such as drawings and illustrations.

“A nice innovation that has added to the charm of the nar-rative.”

Lal also wished him further success as a writer.

Boeing 737 MAX to get EU flight clearance next weekReuters | Paris

Boeing’s 737 MAX airliner will receive final clear-

ance to resume flying in Eu-rope next week, the head of the EU’s air safety watchdog said on Tuesday.

The EU Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is one of the last major regulators to approve changes to the MAX and its anti-stall soft-ware, blamed for two deadly crashes that grounded the jet in March 2019.

The European agency, which published a draft airworthiness directive in November, has made largely presentational adjustments after public consultations, Executive Director Patrick Ky said in an online media briefing.

“We expect to publish it next week, which means the MAX will be cleared to fly again,” Ky said. A separate certification of the MAX-200 variant will likely follow in “coming weeks”, he added, allowing flights to resume before summer.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Brazilian authorities both cleared the MAX for flight in November. Canada is expected to follow suit on Wednesday.

Following the crashes, EASA insisted on carrying out a broader and deeper review than it typically con-ducts on Boeing jets under the FAA’s primary authority.

Emirates President Tim Clark last week credited the European regulator’s “very hard line” for helping to restore public trust in the MAX.

Oil gains on hopes for improving demandReuters | London

Oil prices climbed yesterday as optimism that govern-

ment stimulus will eventually lift global economic growth and oil demand trumped con-cerns that renewed COVID-19 lockdowns are cooling fuel con-sumption.

Brent crude futures for March rose 73 cents, or 1.3%, to $55.48 a barrel by 1454 GMT after slipping 35 cents in the previous session.

US West Texas Intermediate crude rose 17 cents, or 0.3%, to $52.53. There was no set-tlement on Monday because US markets were closed for a public holiday. Front-month February WTI futures expire on Wednesday.

A lower dollar also helped demand, making oil cheaper for holders of other currencies.

Investors are upbeat about demand in China, the world’s top crude oil importer, after data on Monday showed its refinery output rose 3% to a record high in 2020.

China also avoided an eco-nomic contraction last year.

Investors are watching for US oil inventory data from the

API industry association, due on Wednesday, the day of US President-elect Joe Biden’s in-auguration.

“As we are approaching the beginning of the Biden admin-istration era in the US, traders now have their hopes up for a

rapid positive effect on markets coming from the promised ($1.9 trillion) stimulus package,” said Rystad’s head of oil markets, Bjornar Tonhaugen.

The International Energy Agency cut its outlook for oil demand in 2021 but pointed to a recovery in demand in the second half of the year to an annual average of 96.6 million barrels per day.

“Border closures, social dis-tancing measures and shut-downs ... will continue to constrain fuel demand until vaccines are more widely dis-tributed, most likely only by the second half of the year,” it said in its monthly report.

India asks Facebook’s WhatsApp to withdraw privacy policy updateReuters | New Delhi

India’s technology ministry has asked WhatsApp to with-

draw changes to its privacy pol-icy the messenger announced this month, saying the new terms take away choice from Indian users.

The demand creates a new headache for WhatsApp and its US parent Facebook, which have placed big bets on the South Asian nation to expand their payments and other busi-nesses.

“The proposed changes raise grave concerns regarding the implications for the choice and autonomy of Indian citizens,” the Ministry of Electronics and

Information Technology wrote in an email to WhatsApp boss Will Cathcart dated Jan. 18.

“Therefore, you are called upon to withdraw the proposed changes,” the ministry wrote in the letter seen by Reuters.

It is of “great concern” that Indian users have not been given the choice to opt out of

this data sharing with Facebook companies and are being given less choice compared to the app’s European users, the tech ministry letter said.

“This differential and dis-criminatory treatment of In-dian and European users is at-tracting serious criticism and betrays a lack of respect for the rights and interest of Indian citizens who form a substan-tial portion of WhatsApp’s user base,” it said.

T h e m i n i s t r y a s k e d WhatsApp to respond to 14 questions including on the cat-egories of user data it collected, whether it profiled customers based on usage and cross-bor-der data flows.

News in brief u The Kremlin said on Tuesday it would not heed calls by some Western countries for sanctions over Russia’s detention of poisoned opposition politician Alexei Navalny because his case was a purely domestic matter. Navalny was detained on Sunday after flying back to Russia for the first time since he was attacked with a military-grade nerve agent last summer while travelling in Russia’s east, and has urged Russians to take to the streets in protest. Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia want the European Union to respond with sanctions against Moscow.

u Iraq’s cabinet decided yesterday to postpone the general election to Oct. 10 from June, the state news agency INA said. The

elections been brought forward to June 6, roughly a year early, following a proposal by Iraq’s Independent High Election Commission

(IHEC), which wanted more time to organise the polls. Early elections were a key demand of anti-government protesters who staged mass demonstrations that started in October 2019. Hundreds were killed by security forces and gunmen suspected of links to militia groups.

u A Thai court on Tuesday sentenced a 65-year-old woman to more than 43 years in jail for sharing online posts criticizing the royal family, her lawyer said, the country’s harshest ever sentence for insulting the monarchy. Her sentence comes at a time of unprecedented youth-led demonstrations in which protest leaders have openly criticised the monarchy, risking prosecution under Thailand’s strict law known as lese majeste, which carries a 15-year penalty for each violation. Anchan was initially sentenced to 87 years but because she had acknowledged her violations the court halved this, the lawyer said.

u Two British hospitals are using blockchain technology to keep tabs on the storage and supply of temperature-sensitive COVID-19 vaccines, the companies behind the initiative said on Tuesday, in one of the first such initiatives in the world. Two hospitals, in central England’s Stratford-upon-Avon and Warwick, are expanding their use of a distributed ledger, an offshoot of blockchain, from tracking vaccines and chemotherapy drugs to monitoring fridges storing COVID-19 vaccines. The tech will bolster record-keeping and data-sharing across supply chains, said Everyware, which monitors vaccines and other treatments for Britain’s National Health Service (NHS), and Texas-based ledger Hedera, owned by firms including Alphabet’s Google and IBM, in a statement.

Bahrain needs eco friendly cool roofs

With construction in urban Bahrain

developing rapidly, the

open spaces are being used

up and natural green lungs of the cities such

as public parks are feeling the rising

pressure of the population.

Bahrain’s 2030 Economic Development Strategy with its focus on improv-ing infrastructure is robustly driving the construction and housing indus-try’s growth in the kingdom. This growth is also being complimented by

the dramatic rise in demand for small housing units in Bahrain with over 60,000 families awaiting government subsidized homes. According to the Bahrain eGovernment website data on housing, there are 3000 marriages solemnized every year and assuming that even if half of these weddings result in housing requirement, it translates to a continuous requirement of 1500 houses annually. The government is rapidly matching the speed of the housing requirement with suitable projects but there is also an express need to ensure the well-being of the environment in this effort.

With construction in urban Bahrain developing rapidly, the open spaces are being used up and natural green lungs of the cities such as public parks are feeling the rising pressure of the population. Amongst other collateral impacts, this is causing a noticeable spike in ambient urban temperatures and rising ur-ban heat island effect which is directly resulting in peak demand for electricity for air-conditioning. This rise in heat levels is particularly challenging for a nation like Bahrain where majority of months in a year witness high level of temperatures. Given these conditions, it is essential that any urban development activity, especially in the construction sector to ensure that a further worsening of urban temperatures is not allowed. This is where the concept of “cool roofs” can help achieve the twin objectives of cooler buildings that need lesser energy for air-conditioning while keeping the urban temperatures in check.

Today’s urban buildings both residential and commercial are the key source of high energy consumption and green-house gas emissions and Bahrain’s urban building landscape is no ex-ception. Cool roof technology is not a new concept but is not a wide-spread one either, especially in the retail residential construction sector. Cool roof technology improves a build-ing’s thermal energy performance by acting mainly on the energy require-ment for air-conditioning. High solar reflectance and thermal emissivity properties of cool roofs help not only reduce the amount of heat emitted from a building to the atmosphere, but also reduce the heat radiating into the building from outside.

Cool roofs can be ensured by re-sorting to humble and affordable options such as lime plaster or to a slightly expensive option of using specially designed tiles that equally do a good job in reflecting heat. Light tile roofs with metal decking can also deliver a good impact in cooling the building and reducing the air-condi-tioning load. The traditional bitumen covered and cement paved roofs on the other hand are fastly proving to be a thing of past globally as their heat absorption capabilities are limited and thermal insulation properties poor. These practices continue to see usage due to the cheap cost of instal-lation, but this needs to be curtailed in Bahrain no matter how big or small the building is.

In order to enable large scale usage of cool roofs there is a need to com-mission detailed scientific studies based upon meteorological modeling and thermal simulation to measure the efficacy and benefits of cool roofs. Countries such as the United States have conducted studies that have established interesting findings in favor of cool roofs. According to a study by Rosado, et al, the annual savings in electricity costs for air-conditioning amounted to 26 per cent due to the installation of cool roofs. Banking on studies such as these, the US building and construction sector has proceeded in a big way to adopt cool roofs. This has enabled heat mitigation in a scientific and sustainable manner.

Similarly, in Auckland, New Zealand a scientific study conducted to measure the efficacy of cool roofs delivered very encouraging results. The study observed the parameters of two identical buildings, one furnished with a red roof and the other with a white roof. The conclusions proved that the building with white roof not only reduced the dependence on air-conditioning but also increased the efficacy of the limited air-conditioning that was used. If the cool roofs can have such interesting results in temperate countries such as New Zealand, the concept can have endless opportunities in nations such as Bahrain where the climate is arid and dry. A group of white roofed buildings can have a combined impact on the immediate temperature of the vicinity and reduce the heat quo-tient in the neighbourhood by as much as 2 degree Celsius.

Cool roofs concept coupled with increasing green spaces and water bodies can vastly reduce ambient temperatures of urban Bahrain, provided a large-scale implementation is undertaken.

Biden becomes 46th US prez US President-elect Joe Biden plans to sign dozens of executive orders and send sweeping bills to Congress in his first

days in office, aiming to roll back some of Donald Trump’s signature policies on immigration and climate change while taking action to ramp up the government’s response to the coronavirus crisis. Here is a list of what to expect,

according to interviews with several of Biden’s advisers, a review of campaign promises and a recent memo by the president-elect’s incoming chief of staff Ron Klain.

COVID-19 CRISIS* Seek a $1.9 trillion spending proposal aimed at accelerating the distribution of coronavirus vaccines while providing economic relief to millions of Americans hurt by the pandemic.

* Impose a mask-wearing requirement on all federal property, planes and buses.

* Extend relief on federal student loan payments and extend an eviction moratorium.

* Sign an executive order that helps schools and businesses reopen safely, expands coronavirus testing and establishes clearer public health standards.

* Direct federal agencies to take immediate action to deliver economic relief to working families bearing the brunt of the crisis.

* Return the United States to the World Health Organization. Trump withdrew from the agency, saying it failed to properly oversee the COVID-19 pandemic.

CLIMATE* Bring the United States back into the Paris Climate Agreement, the global pact forged five years ago among nearly 200 nations to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. Trump vowed in 2016 to pull the United States out of the agreement, making good on that promise in November 2020.

* Reimpose methane pollution limits for new and existing oil and gas operations repealed by Trump.

* Using the federal government procurement system – which spends $500 billion every year – to make facilities more reliant on clean energy and purchase zero-emissions vehicles.

* Ban new oil and gas permitting on public lands and waters, including the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

* Cancel the permit for the Keystone XL Pipeline, which would carry oil from Canada to the United States.

IMMIGRATION* Repeal the ban on almost all travel from some Muslim-majority countries.

* Send to Congress a sweeping immigration bill that could legalize millions of immigrants living in the United States without legal permission.

* Reinstate the programme allowing “Dreamers,” people who were brought to the United States illegally as children, to remain in the country.

* Reverse Trump’s policy that separated immigrant parents from their children at the border, including ending the prosecution of parents for minor immigration violations, and prioritize the reunification of any children still separated from their families.

* Reverse Trump’s more restrictive asylum policies, such as imposing additional restrictions on anyone traveling through Mexico or Guatemala and attempting to prevent victims of gang and domestic violence from receiving asylum.

* End Trump’s National Emergency declaration that allowed him to shift federal funds from the Department of Defense to build a wall along the US border with Mexico.

* Order an immediate review of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for vulnerable populations who cannot find safety in their countries ripped apart by violence or disaster.

Bidens’s inauguration as the 46th President of the United States of America will take place against a backdrop of 7.2-metre (25-foot) banners symbolizing the United

States’ history.

Organisers for President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration finished setting up about 200,000 flags on Monday, representing the

American people who cannot travel to the inauguration amid a worsening coronavirus pandemic and extraordinary security pre-cautions. The flags represent all of the states and US territories,

and they also are meant to honor the 400,000 Americans who will have officially died from COVID-19 by the time Biden is sworn in.

Biden arrived in Washington for his inauguration yesterday, and he and incoming first lady Jill Biden spend yesterday night at Blair House, near the

White House. Outgoing President Trump plans to leave the White House today morning, making him the first president since Andrew Johnson —

the first impeached president — to skip the inauguration of his successor. Trump has made no public appearances in six days.

Far fewer peopleIn the past, up to 200,000

tickets were up for grabs to attend the official ceremony, but this year,

with infections still surging across the US, only around 1,000 tickets will be available.

The FBI has warned of

armed protests being planned

for Washington ahead of the

event

More than 10,000 National

Guard troops will be in the capital, with about 5,000 more available if

requested.

Fueled by President Donald Trump, conspiracy groups such as the far-right Oath Keepers, Three

Percenters, Boogaloo Bois and The Proud Boys have finally led the “Patriot” movement to domestic ter-

rorism with the deadly January 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol. “We love you. You’re very special,” Trump

said in a video message.

Ben Affleck, Ana de Armas split after almost 1 year of dating: reportANI | Washington

Actor, director Ben Affleck and girlfriend Ana de Armas have split after almost a year

of dating, according to a new report.Fox News quoted a report by

People magazine which states that the breakup happened because the 48-year-old actor-director and the 32-year-old star de Armas are at “different points in their lives.”

“There is deep love and respect there. Ben continues to want to work on himself. He has three jobs lined up and he’s a solid father at home. They are both happy with where they are in their lives,” a source told the outlet.

Another insider close to the for-mer couple added that “she broke it off.”

The insider added, “Their re-

lationship was complicated. Ana doesn’t want to be Los Angeles based and Ben obviously has to since his kids live in Los Angeles.”

As reported by Fox News, Affleck shares daughters 14-year-old Violet and 11-year-old Seraphina and 8-year-old son Samuel with ex-wife Jennifer Garner.

In March 2020, De Ar-mas and Affleck were first linked, after meeting on the set of their upcoming film ‘Deep Water.’

De Armas confirmed their relationship in April 2020 when she posted a photo of them celebrating her 32nd birthday together.

The pair also quaran-tined together during the ongoing pandem-ic at Affleck’s Venice, California, home.

Elizabeth Olsen: Nepotism creates fear that you don’t deserve the work you getIANS | Los Angeles

Hollywood star Elizabeth Olsen says she once thought of chang-

ing her surname and distance herself from the success of her family because

it was insanity growing up in the spotlight.“It was insanity. There were times when

my sisters would always be spotted and I would be in the car with them and it would really freak me out. It has helped me navigate how I want to approach my career,” said the actress, whose older sisters are Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen.

The actress added that she “always had this need to prove myself to everyone around me that I work really hard”, add-ing: “I couldn’t walk in a room without everyone already having an opinion.”

Elizabeth opened up om the fears of nepotism.

“The thing about nepotism is the fear that you don’t earn or deserve the work. There was even a part of me when I was a little girl that thought if I’m gonna be an actress I’m going to go by Elizabeth Chase, which is my middle name. And then, once I started working, I was like,

‘I love my family, I like my name, I love my sisters. Why would I be so ashamed

of that?’ It’s fine now,” she said. The actress said fame has made

her more of a homebody.“Fame has also made me some-

one who is more of a homebody than maybe I would like to be but I know where not to go. If I could do whatever I wanted for the day, I’d start with the gym, then I’d go to the grocery store, because it’s my favourite thing,”

Elizabeth told The Sun.

Jared Leto calls Zack Snyder a ‘madman’IANS | Los Angeles

Actor Jared Leto says he enjoyed working with

director Zack Snyder on his version of Justice League, known as the Snyder cut.

The actor will reprise the role of the Joker in the Sny-der Cut of Justice League.

“He’s (Snyder) a warri-or. He’s a madman. I really love him,” said Leto, re-ports contactmusic.com.

“With every charac-ter I play - I don’t know

if it’s because I work so intently and I tend to dig really deep and put a lot of time and energy into it - but when I’m done playing with them, done playing the parts, I do miss them a little bit,” he added.

Leto had played the Joker in the 2016 release, Suicide Squad. He loves the chance to play the part of the DC Comics villain again.

“You do all this work and then you’re done, so it is nice to revisit things. You know, parts like the Joker, like Sparma (his role in ‘The Little Things’), what’s really great about those roles is they can be intense and dark, but there’s also a

lot of freedom and abandon there,” said Leto.

“And that’s really fun for me, it’s fun for the other actors, it’s fun for the crew. With both of those roles, there was lots of laughter on the set and a lot of joy because you would improvise and say some-thing really funny. So it’s always quite a lot of fun when you can hear people cracking up on the other side of the camera, and I like that quite a bit,” he added.

Justin Timberlake finally confirms birth of second childIANS | Los Angeles

Singer-actor Justin T i m b e r l a ke a n d

his wife, actress Jessi-ca Biel, welcomed

their second child in 2020. Timber-lake has finally confirmed the news now. They have named their second child, a son, Phineas.

T h e s i n g e r opened up about being a father of two during a vir-tual appearance on “The Ellen De-Generes Show”, reports people.com.“He’s awesome

and so cute. Nobody’s sleeping,” Timberlake joked, adding: “But we’re thrilled. We’re thrilled and couldn’t be happier. Very grateful.”

The couple, who got married in 2012, welcomed their first child, son Silas, in April 2015.

DeGeneres shared that she was among the few “outside of the immediate family” who

knew about Biel’s pregnancy.“I think we were FaceTiming

and you said, ‘Hey, you want to know a secret?’ and then Jessi-ca walked in and you put your hand on her stomach. You were like, ‘I’m having another baby!,” she said.

Asked how parenting two kids compares to one child, Timberlake replied: “We don’t see each other anymore. It’s a lot of fun. I guess the saying goes from a zone defense to a man-to-man really quick-ly. It ’s great. Silas is super excited.”

Talking about how his five-year-old Silas is getting used to being a big brother, the singer shared: “Right now he’s very much liking it. Phin can’t walk yet or chase him down, so we’ll see what happens.”

He’s awesome and so cute. Nobody’s

sleeping. But we’re thrilled. We’re thrilled

and couldn’t be happier. Very grateful

Paul Bettany says his superhero avatar Vision is part Ultron, part Tony StarkIANS | Los Angeles

Hollywood star Paul Bettany says his su-

perhero avatar, Vision, has always been part Tony

Stark, or Iron Man, and part Ultron.

Bettany is repris-ing his superhero character in the series “WandaVi-sion”.

“I was worried initially. I was like, ‘Wow, this feels so different’ as I read the script and (thought) how do I

keep him the same,” Bettany said while

talking about the series.“And then I realised he has always

been becoming something else. He is part J.A.R.V.I.S.. He is part Ultron. He is part Tony Stark. He is omnip-otent... Then I realised, I will just throw a little bit of Dick Van Dyke in there and a little bit of Hugh Laurie,” he added.

The Marvel Studios series also brings back Elizabeth Olsen as Wan-da Maximoff. The two su-per-powered beings will be seen trying to adapt to their suburban lives as a married couple. The series blends the style of classic sitcoms with MCU thrills.

Record-breaking India clinch Australia Test series in Gabba thrillerAFP | Brisbane

India pulled off a record run-chase in a thrilling fi-

nal session to hand Australia their first defeat at Brisbane’s Gabba ground since 1988 and clinch the four-Test series 2-1 on Tuesday.

Wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant starred with a swashbuckling 89 not out as the injury-deplet-ed visitors overhauled the 328-run target with three overs to go, winning by three wickets.

Australia had not been beaten at the Gabba since falling to Viv Richards’ all-conquering West Indies side by nine wickets in November 1988.

India’s 329 for seven also smashed the 69-year-old record for the biggest run-chase at the Gabba, set by Australia who scored 236 for seven to beat the West Indies in 1951.

The series win was a remark-able achievement considering India were bowled out for their lowest Test score of 36 to lose the first Test in Adelaide, be-fore bouncing back to win the second in Melbourne.

The visitors, ravaged by in-juries and captain Virat Kohli’s absence for paternity leave, then batted throughout the fi-nal day to draw the third Test in Sydney.

“It really means a lot to us. I don’t know how to describe this victory but I’m really proud of all the boys,” said India’s inter-im skipper Ajinkya Rahane.

“They showed character, attitude, especially after the Adelaide Test match. We de-cided we’re going to fight really hard... and we just wanted to

give our best.”Man-of-the-match Pant, who

played a similar innings in the drawn Sydney Test, blasted his 89 from 138 balls with nine fours and a six.

His innings followed an equally impressive knock from 21-year-old Shubman Gill, who made 91 at the top of the order earlier in the day.

Cheteshwar Pujara’s 56 was also vital, the gritty number three hit 10 times by Austral-ia’s quicks, taking blows to the fingers, arm, ribs and head as he was subjected to a searching

examination by Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood.

Cummins with 4-55 was eas-ily the pick of the Australian at-tack, sending down 24 overs of pace and hostility, but the rest of the bowlers looked fatigued after bowling all day in Sydney just eight days ago.

“I’m absolutely disappoint-ed, no doubt about that. We’ve come here to win the Test and win the series,” said Australia captain Tim Paine.

“It’s probably a little bit of a trend the whole series –- I think in the key moments we were found wanting and com-pletely outplayed by a really disciplined, really tough Indi-an side who fully deserved the series win.”

Despite Australia’s fearsome record at the Gabba, the In-dian batsmen showed no fear and never looked interested in playing for a draw, even after losing the wickets of Pujara and Mayank Agarwal after tea.

Thompson wins ‘Samboy’ Sportsmanship AwardTDT | Manila

Scottie Thompson of Ba-rangay Ginebra took home

the Samboy Lim Sportsman-ship Award of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) 45th season.

The versatile high-flyer guard was formally awarded with the honour during the vir-tual ceremony of the league’s special awards.

This is the first time that a Ginebra player bagged such honours named after the all-time great Avelino “Samboy” Lim, who was its first-ever re-cipient in 1993.

He became the new holder of the award after Rain or Shine’s Gabe Norwood received it from the 2016, 2017 until the 2019 season.

Another Sportsmanship would have given Norwood his fourth, which would break his tie with Freddie Abuda and Rey Evangelista for most all-time.

“I’m just following the footsteps of Gabe for playing the game the right way,” said Thompson, a Davao del Sur native.

The 27-year-old Thompson got the distinction for the hon-our over Norwood, Terrafir-ma’s CJ Perez, NLEX’s Kevin Alas and Phoenix Super LPG’s Calvin Abueva, who was a sur-prise nominee after showing significant changes following his return from a 16-month sus-pension.

The Ginebra guard received 2,360 points with Perez finish-ing second with 2,069.

Thompson, who hit key shots in Ginebra’s run to the All-Fili-pino title, said he was honoured to have won the trophy that was previously awarded to Rain or

Shine veteran Gabe Norwood.“I’m so thankful and bless-

ed all the time, I’m playing the game the right way,” he said.

Aside from exemplifying ethical behaviour, fair play and integrity, Thompson also helped the Gin Kings emerge as champions of the first-ever bubble play.

He averaged 11.0 points, 8.8

rebounds, 5.8 assists, and 1.1 steals as the Barangay won their first Philippine Cup title in 13 long years.

The award is another addi-tion to his trophy case, which has five championships, a Fi-nals MVP, and Most Improved Player honours, to name a few.

It was the first of many awards Ginebra received dur-ing the hour-long event.

Stanley Pringle bagged the Best Player of the Conference and joined Japeth Aguilar in the Elite Five while sweet-shoot-ing Prince Caperal became the Most Improved Player.

Part of the criteria in choos-ing the winners of the individ-ual awards are statistical points, votes from fellow players, me-dia personnel, and the PBA of-fice.

The league had completed just one conference last season, holding the Philippine Cup in a biosecure bubble in Clark, Pampanga due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Talking points of BRAVE CF 46Eldar Eldarov stopped Leonardo Mafra, defended Super Lightweight belt at BRAVE CF 46, in Russia

• Bagautinov dominated at BRAVE CF 46, earns spot in the BRAVE CF Flyweight Tournament

TDT | Manama

BRAVE Combat Federation broke new ground last Saturday as the fastest-growing organization in

the world hosted an event for the first time in Russia. In association with Krepost Selection, BRAVE CF 46 was a massive success, showcasing top fight-ers from the region competing in a glob-al platform with several huge storylines coming out of the show.

Russia became the 21st country to be the host of a BRAVE CF show worldwide, and the return of fans in the arena made the night an unforgettable one for all fighters involved in the card.

Here are the biggest talking points of BRAVE CF 46:

Eldar Eldarov: the best Super Lightweight in the world

Eldar Eldarov came in at BRAVE CF 46 with a lot to prove. Away from competi-tion since April of 2019, he saw the com-petition for a title shot at his weight-class rise up, with the likes of Luan Santiago, Benoit St. Denis, and Issa Isakov all ready to challenge the champ upon his return. However, the chosen adversary for Eldarov was top striker Leonardo Mafra, who had shown a very well-rounded mixed martial arts game

in his last fight.Eldar had a lot of pressure leading

up to BRAVE CF 46, as he was the main event and billed as the biggest star. It was a homecoming party for the champ who now also represents Bahrain and lives in the Kingdom full-time. How-ever, Eldarov handled the expectations with ease, having a dominant perfor-mance, and reminding the world why he is the best Super Lightweight in the game. Up next? Most likely a date with one of the three aforementioned contenders.

Flyweight Tournament gets an exciting addition

BRAVE Combat Federation is putting together the biggest Flyweight tour-nament in the history of mixed martial arts, with the likes of Jose Torres, Zach Makovsky, Dustin Ortiz, and Velimurad Alkhasov, the winner will be crowned the first-ever BRAVE CF Flyweight champion of the world.

And you can add veteran Ali Bagauti-nov as one of the contestants for the big prize. Bagautinov made his BRAVE CF

debut in the co-main event of BRAVE CF 46 and dominated young, hungry Oleg Lichkovakha, albeit with some scary moments - especially in the second round, when Oleg got Ali’s back mo-mentarily before the two-time sambo world champion reversed the position.

The unanimous decision win in favor of Bagautinov means he will now enter the tournament, and is potentially three fights away from winning the biggest prize of his storied mixed martial arts career.

Roman Bogatov: a serious threat at Featherweight

Roman Bogatov began his descent to Featherweight in his first fight with BRAVE Combat Federation. The Russian star was eager to make up for a disap-pointing loss in his latest outing but had

to dig deep to get the win against fellow newcomer Nurzhan Akishev. The two men put on great action throughout three rounds, but in the end Bogatov was too good for Akishev.

The new Featherweight addition went as far as saying that Kazakhstan’s Akishev was the hardest opponent of his career - actually harder than the one that beat him in his last outing before BRAVE CF.

Now he has thrown his name into the hat of next possible contenders for the Featherweight world title, currently vacant. If Bogatov can maintain that level of performance, then the sky’s the limit for the 29-year-old.

Murtaza Talha: the next superstar In the last few months, BRAVE Com-

bat Federation has firmly established itself as a hotbed for new superstars for the sport. And the latest one might be the best yet. Murtaza Talha han-dled his second professional fight with even more ferociousness, ending Dmi-triy Krivulets’ night early in the first round.

It was the first TKO victory for the young Bahraini, who has conquered the amateur world with two world titles at IMMAF, the number one rank at Light Heavyweight, and the number six pound-for-pound spot at the Inter-national MMA Federation’s list.

Now he’s beginning his descent to Middleweight, where he hopes to continue his domination towards an eventual title shot. The next big star of mixed martial arts is ready for higher flights.

Bautista Agut apologises for comparing hotel quarantine to jail

Reuters | Melbourne

Spaniard Roberto Bauti-sta Agut has apologised

after criticising the Victoria state government’s quaran-tine requirements for ten-nis players ahead of next month’s Australian Open and comparing being locked down in a hotel to being in prison.

Passengers who arrived on three charter flights have been placed into hard quar-antine, including more than 70 players who are unable to train outside their rooms for 14 days before the year’s first Grand Slam starts on Feb. 8.

A number of top players, including world number one Novak Djokovic, have questioned the need for mandatory hotel quaran-tine but Victoria premier Daniel Andrews said it was essential to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Messi banned for two matches after historic Barca red

AFP | Barcelona

Lionel Messi was handed a two match ban yester-

day following his first ever sending off for Barcelona.

The Argentine forward was shown a red card at the end of Sunday’s 3-2 ex-tra-time defeat to Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish Super Cup final after lashing out at Asier Villalibre.

Messi had twice been sent off playing for Argentina, including at the 2019 Copa America, but never in 16 years and 753 matches with Barcelona’s first team.

The six t ime Ballon d’Or winner’s ban was an-nounced by the Spanish Football Federation. Messi shook off a thigh problem to start in Seville and was required to play all 120 min-utes as Barca attempted to take the game to penalties.

Instead, the 33-year-old lost his temper at the end of a combative contest, re-acting to a late challenge from Villalibre by swiping his hands across the back of his opponent.

Manama come alive in second half to rout Hala

• Mohammed Hussain and Hassan Nowrooz combine for 52, while Hussain comes a rebound shy of a triple-double

TDT | Manama

Mohammed Hussain and Hassan Nowrooz com-

bined for 52 points, including 11 three-pointers, to lift Ma-nama to a resounding 100-77 victory over Al Hala last night in the 2020/2021 Zain Bah-rain Basketball League, being played at Zain arena in Um Al Hassam.

Manama pulled away from their rivals in the second half as they maintained their pristine record after seven games.

Hussain finished with a team-high 28, which included six makes from beyond the arc. He almost finished with a tri-ple-double as he also registered nine rebounds and 10 assists.

Nowrooz chipped in with 24 along with five triples. Ahmed Salman added 18 while Ahmed Najaf scored 16.

Sayed Kadhem Majed paced Hala in the loss with 31. He was also on fire from the perimeter as he buried six three-pointers. Hussain Salman scored 12 while Canadian professional Keanau Post was held to just 10 points and nine boards.

Hala were the early aggres-sors and they took a narrow 24-20 lead at the end of the first quarter, but once Manama got into their groove they were in control and they headed into the break with a narrow 48-44 advantage.

Manama then raised the tem-po in the third period and went on a 16-3 run that turned a two-point lead into a 71-56 cushion. They headed into the final can-to up 76-64, and did enough

over the game’s closing stages to seal the comfortable result. They led by as many as 23.

Hala suffered their second consecutive defeat and dropped to a 5-3 win-loss record.

League action continues to-night with two games sched-uled. At 5.30pm, Samaheej face off with Al Ettihad, followed at 7.45pm by a massive top-of-the-table clash between defending champions Al Ahli and top con-tenders Muharraq.

Muharraq stay perfect with 12th win in volleyball

TDT | Manama

Muharraq and Dar Kulaib had contrasting victori-

ous last night in the 2020/2021 Isa bin Rashid Bahrain First Division Volleyball League.

Both matches took place at the Bahrain Volleyball Associ-ation arena at Isa Sports City in Riffa.

Muharraq were dominant from start to finish in a 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-19) of Al Najma in a match that was decided in just over an hour.

The defending champions claimed their 12th victory in as many games as they remained the only unbeaten team in the

league, while Najma suffered their sixth loss in 12 outings.

Meanwhile, in yesterday’s other fixture, Dar Kulaib over-came a two-set deficit to roar back against Al Nasser for a stunning 3-2 (23-25, 18-25, 25-21, 25-23, 18-16) win.

It was a tight finish in the contest as both teams were deadlocked at 15-all in the fifth and decisive set. Dar Kulaib then came away with three of the next four points to seal the result.

With the result, Dar Kulab claimed their ninth victory in 12 matches while Nasser suf-fered their seventh loss to go with five wins.

Bahrain advance in handball worldsNational team defeat DR Congo 34-27 to take their first win of competition and book place in main round

• Bahrain captain Hussain Al Sayyad comes up big for team with nine goals

• Nationals set to face Croatia in first game of next stage tomorrow

TDT | Manama

Bahrain overcame a heated challenge from African powerhouses DR Con-

go in a thrilling 34-27 victory last night to seal their place in the main round of the 27th IHF World Men’s Handball Cham-pionship, being held in Egypt.

The contest was a winner-take-all affair as both sides were hoping to finish third in their preliminary round group and earn a place in the tournament’s next stage.

The Bahrainis did well to hang on to a slim lead for much of the match but in the end were able to pull away for the big result. Team captain Hussain Al Sayyad came up big for his side when they needed it the most, scoring a game-high nine goals.

Bahrain are thus through to the world championship’s main stage for the first time in four editions, while Congo will play for the President’s Cup, which features the competition’s eight lowest-ranked teams.

The Bahrainis will be in Group II of the main phase. They are next set to take on Croa-tia, before also playing against Qatar and Japan. Denmark and Argentina are also in this pool, but Bahrain will no longer face them as their match results from the preliminary round carry over.

Bahrain faced a narrow deficit early on in last night’s game but managed to take the lead before the half, as they headed into the locker rooms with a slim 14-12 advantage.

The nationals did well to stay narrowly ahead over the final 30 minutes, but were only able to build on their lead over the last few minutes.

It was a hard-earned triumph for the Bahrainis, who bounced

back from a disheartening loss against their Argentinian coun-terparts just two nights before.

Al Sayyad’s nine goals was the most so far for any Bahraini player in three games. Ali Eid and Mohamed Ahmed both chipped in with five in the win, while Komail Mahfoodh and Mahdi Saad each finished with four.

Ahmed Fahdul scored thrice, while Mohamed Mirza had two

goals. Contributing one apiece were Ali Mirza and Ali Salman.

Johan Kiangebeni Kawola scored six to pace Congo while Gauthier Mvumbi Thierry add-ed five.

In the main round, Bahrain will have an even tougher cam-paign as they go against the elite national teams in the world championship.

Those matches are scheduled to begin tomorrow.
