The European Union will target eight Iranian militia and police com-

manders and three state entities with sanctions next week over a deadly crackdown in Novem-ber 2019 by Iranian authorities, three diplomats said yesterday.

The travel bans and asset freezes will be the first time the EU has imposed sanctions on Iran for human rights abuses since 2013 and are set to be put in place some time next week after the Easter holidays in Eu-rope, the diplomats said.

The individuals to be targeted include members of Iran’s hard-line Basij militia, who are under the command of the Revolution-

ary Guards, the most powerful and heavily armed security force in the Islamic Republic.

About 1,500 people were

killed during less than two weeks of unrest that started on Nov. 15, 2019, according to a toll provided to Reuters by three Ira-nian interior ministry officials at the time. The United Nations said the total was at least 304.

After days of protests across Iran in November 2019, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei issued an order to crackdown on protesters.

On March 9, UN special rap-porteur on the situation of hu-

man rights in Iran, Javaid Reh-man, presented a report saying Tehran used lethal force during the protests and chided it for failing to conduct a proper in-vestigation or for failing to hold anyone accountable.

Asked why the bloc had taken so long to process its sanctions response, one EU diplomat in-volved in the preparations cited the need for strong evidence against those hit with the puni-tive measures.

The United Nations has warned about a deterioration of human rights in Iran. Its March 9 report

documented Iran’s high death pen-alty rate, executions of juveniles,

the use of torture to coerce confes-sions and the lawful marriage of

girls as young as 10 years old.

cused the Iran-backed Houthi militia of working closely with both al-Qaeda and ISIS to inflict

terrorism on the Yemeni people in an intelligence report submit-ted to the UN Security Council.

“This report, which is based on confirmed intelligence infor-mation and facts, sheds light on the close relationship between

the Houthi militia and both al-Qaeda and ISIS, which is an extension of the relationship be-tween Iran and terrorist organi-sations,” the government said in the report dated March 30.

“In addition, the report shows

how these militias are using their relationship with terrorist organisations to inflict more ter-rorism on the Yemeni people.”

The Houthis have inten-sified their attacks on Yemen and neighbouring Saudi Arabia

in recent weeks. One civilian was killed and six others were wounded on Tuesday after a bal-listic missile launched by the Iran-backed militia fell in the middle of a residential neigh-bourhood in Yemen’s Marib.

Electronic transformation applications empower courts to confront dif-

ficult challenges, enhance the effectiveness of justice proce-dures and improve the delivery of services to the people.

The clear benefits of digital transformation of courts and justice systems also include in-novation, accessibility and trans-parency.

This was emphasised by Jus-tice and Islamic Affairs Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ali Al Khalifa who held a virtual meeting with various stakeholders yesterday to discuss the current technolog-ical and electronic transforma-tions implemented in the justice sector.

The Minister informed the participants about how the Min-istry and, more importantly, the public stand to benefit from the many diverse applications and digital tools available especially during the current pandemic which causes difficulties and barriers to proceed with the usu-al procedures.

He noted that the judicial sys-tem faces many different types of challenges such as how to effi-ciently manage public resources;

to be transparent and open to stakeholders; to be accessible to all social groups and communi-ties; and to innovate in response to citizens’ needs.

However, by implementing digital transformation projects, it helps justice sector profes-sionals to overcome these chal-lenges.

Shaikh Khalid bin Ali pointed out that through the e-justice transformations, there have been a significant reduction in the number of procedures required to complete a single service, which before required personal attendance.

The time taken to complete it has been reduced, and it saves effort and time for the judge, lawyer and litigant, especially in the aspect related to the pro-cedures and case management.

On the most prominent advan-tages of electronic transforma-tion applications, the Minister stated that they contribute to reducing the period of adver-tisements to become automatic,

with the ability to file and follow up cases throughout the day, in addition to handling cases in court without the need for paper files, as well as the possibility of not personally attending the ses-sions, and informing all parties

of developments.The case is immediate, not to

mention supporting the speed of adjudication of cases, raising the productivity of assistive devices in the implementation and fol-low-up of court decisions.

Through e-justice transforma-tions, submitting applications to the execution courts at any time becomes easier and faster, dou-bling the number of decisions issued by enforcement courts by a large percentage, and follow-ing up on the status of requests at the Department of Minors’ Funds according to Procedural sequencing, and the completion of documentation transactions without being restricted to a place or time.

Shaikh Khalid bin Ali lauded the great efforts made by the Information and eGovernment Authority in achieving elec-tronic transformation in many of the services provided by the Ministry through the national e-government portal.

He explained that the num-ber of electronic transactions completed through the services available through the portal in 2020 reached 1,861,102.

They were distributed as follows: 471,187 for lawsuits, 1,315,680 for enforcement, 11,759 for licenses and agencies, 26,774 for managing minors’ affairs and funds, and 35,702 for the private notary.

In order to enhance the effec-

tiveness of justice procedures, the Minister indicated a number of initiatives undertaken that contributed to strengthening these procedures.

The most prominent of them were the completion of the au-tomation of procedures before civil, commercial and Sharia courts; the establishment of specialised paths for cases, es-pecially commercial ones; and the adoption of a system case management, application of me-diation in disputes, development of performance indicators for courts, development of perfor-mance orders, creation of a final quorum in small claims cases, and the development of a rental dispute settlement mechanism.

adding virtual services related to the artificial

intelligence systems in the future that will

also continue after the pandemic ends in the

Kingdom.

A coordination meeting was held yesterday to prepare

for the third meeting of the Bahrain-India High Joint Commission (HJC), to be held in New Delhi on April 7.

The HJC meeting will be chaired by Ministry of For-eign Affairs for Internation-al Affairs Undersecretary Dr Shaikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Khalifa and the Secretary (CPV&OIA) of the Ministry of External Affairs of the Repub-lic of India, Dr Sanjay Bhat-

tacharyya.During the meeting, the two

sides reviewed the existing partnership frameworks be-tween the two countries, the progress made in the fields of health, space science, comput-ing, trade and investment, and security and labour coopera-tion, as well as the prospects for future cooperation in a way that serves the mutual benefits of the two friendly countries.

Dr Shaikh Abdullah affirmed that the Bahraini-Indian re-lations are well-established, and reflect their distinguished friendship and comprehensive cooperation.

He added that the aspirations of the two countries for bilat-eral cooperation during the next stage are full of promising opportunities in diverse invest-ment and strategic sectors.

Reformation and Rehabilitation plans to visit vaccinated inmatesTDT | Manama

Interior Ministry Undersec-retary Shaikh Nasser bin

Abdulrahman Al Khalifa said yesterday that the Reformation and Rehabilitation plans to ar-range visits for inmates who received COVID-19 vaccination.

The family members should

also be vaccinated and have to carry the pre-visit test.

The Undersecretary said that the directorate had enabled coronavirus-infected inmates and those who are quarantined for coming into contact with infected cases to call their fam-ilies to inform them about their health conditions.

He assured that all active cases are stable and don’t need to be referred to the hospital for treatment. They are pro-vided with round-the-clock comprehensive medical care by a specialised medical team under the Bahrain Medical Team and the Health Minis-try’s supervision.

755,549 people in Bahrain complete vaccination shots

A total of 502,541 citizens and residents has taken the first shot of the coronavirus vaccines in the Kingdom of Bahrain, while the number of those who received the second dose reached 253,008. so it is important to review the systems starting from kinder-garten to post-graduation.

The aim is to establish an ed-

ucational system that meets the requirements of the 21st century and that is capable of producing an educated generation driven by the dynamism of creativity, innovation and competition in different aspects of life.

This was emphasised by His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Supreme Council for the Development of Education and Training.

HH Shaikh Mohammed was speaking as he opened the fourth conference of the Education and Training Quality Authority un-der the theme “The Future of Education and Training Quality: Between Global Trends and Local Execution”.

More than 1,120 specialists, aca-demics and people interested in education and train-ing at the local, regional and inter-national levels are attending the

virtual conference held under HH Shaikh Mohammed’s patronage.

Aside from Bahrain, regional and international bodies and institutions from 30 different countries are also participating.

In his opening speech, the Deputy Prime Minister lauded the interest and guidance of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa in achieving its qualita-tive development and the train-ing reform project launched by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, and its initiatives that include enhancing the quality of education and training.

HH Shaikh Mohammed re-ferred to the report published by the United Nations entitled “Education During COVID-19 and Beyond” in August 2020.

Bahrain wins Montreal Protocol’s Executive Committee membership

Bahrain has won the mem-bership of the Executive

Committee of the Montreal Protocol for the second year in a row, and the position of vice president of the Executive Committee for the first time.

This was confirmed by Special Envoy for Climate Affairs and CEO of the Supreme Council for Environment (SCE) Dr Moham-med bin Mubarak Bin Daina.

He said that this confirms the Kingdom’s active presence in international environmental issues, and an affirmation of its influential and tangible role and its good reputation in all local, regional and internation-al forums.

SCE CEO stressed that the winning reflects the confi-dence of the International community in the Kingdom’s role, as proved by the unani-mous endorsement of Bahrain by the West Asia and the Pacif-ic countries to represent them

in high-level posts related to environmental issues.

Bin Daina noted the King-dom’s landmark achievement attained during the 32 Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer (MOP 32), held virtually, on Novem-ber 23-27.

The special envoy said that Bahrain will be represented through the position of mem-bership of the Executive Com-mittee 55 countries from West Asia and the Pacific, adding that all countries of the world are represented by the regions accredited by the United Na-tions in the committee through 14 members, seven of whom are from the industrialised and developed countries and seven from the developing countries.

He thanked all the countries that supported the Kingdom to assume this important posi-tion, as this contributed to its election to the membership of the Executive Committee.

Bin Daina stressed that ef-forts will continue to be made to ensure that the Kingdom achieves the best results and achievements in the environ-mental issue and sustainable development locally, region-ally and internationally.

Renewable energy expertise sharing mechanisms discussed

Sustainable Energy Authority (SEA) President Abdulhus-

sain bin Ali Mirza held a virtual meeting with a delegation from the Dubai Green Fund com-prising Moataz Kandil, Chief Investment Officer of the Fund, and Faisal Al Raisi, Chief Exec-utive Officer of Etihad Energy Services in the UAE.

Dr Mirza praised the positive interaction between the com-petent authorities and compa-nies in the two countries, which contributes to the development of trade relations between them and strengthens their deep-rooted bonds based on the unity of purpose and destiny.

Dr Mirza gave a presentation on the achievements made in the renewable energy and ener-gy efficiency sector in Bahrain and highlighted the importance of building relationships and partnerships with financing institutions, investment funds and major specialised compa-nies to support the efforts made to promote the promising sec-tor in the Kingdom and achieve mutual benefits.

He noted the importance of

benefiting from the expertise applied in other countries in renewable energy, mainly so-lar energy, especially that the UAE has accomplished great achievements through invest-ing in solar energy projects that compete with the leading regional and global projects.

Dr Mirza also discussed the possibilities of cooperation with the Dubai Green Fund to support the installation of solar energy systems in major infra-structure projects in terms of financing and the experienc-es gained from similar appli-cations in important projects such as the integration and installation of RETROFIT solar energy systems at Dubai In-ternational Airport and others.

President Maria Khoury has reviewed with the Ambas-sador of The Netherlands to Bahrain Laurens Westhoff the institution’s efforts to support, promote and pro-tect human rights in the Kingdom, especially during the current conditions of the coronavirus pandemic.

Khoury, during her online conversation with the Am-bassador based in Kuwait touched on the institution’s call centre and complaints mechanism, as well as on the training and educational programmes the institution provides to various seg-ments of the society.

The conversation also covered issues of shared interest and the two sides discussed strengthening co-operation and coordination in areas related to human rights.

The Dutch Ambassa-dor expressed his sincere thanks and appreciation for the efforts made by the NIHR.

Consultations are underway to nominate NIHR commissionersTDT | Manama

Pursuant to the mandate of His Majesty King Hamad

bin Isa Al Khalifa, the Minis-ter of the Royal Court, Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, is carrying out consultations to nominate commissioners to the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR).

The consultations are based on Royal Order 17 / 2017 that de-termines the controls governing the appointment of members of

the Council of Commissioners at NIHR from the human rights, legal and academic areas, and

representatives of civil society and professional associations.

The nominations take into account the proper representa-tion of women and minorities in a way that contributes to strengthening the status of the institution in accordance with the Paris Principles relating to the Status of National Institu-tions for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights, ratified by the UN General As-sembly Resolution 48/134 on December 20, 1993.

The Parliamentary Delega-tion’s Executive Commit-tee has expressed sup-

port for Saudi Arabia’s initiative to end the Yemeni crisis and reach a comprehensive political solution in the ravaged country.

It also reiterated Bahrain’s solidarity with Egypt in preserv-ing its national and water secu-rity, through supporting efforts to solve the crisis of the filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renais-sance Dam and ensure regional security and stability.

This came as the Executive Committee yesterday held its third meeting under the chair-manship of the Speaker of the Council of Representatives, Fawzia bint Abdulla Zainal.

The panel discussed topics on its agenda, and reviewed the

correspondences addressed to it by Arab, Islamic and inter-national parliamentary unions, as well as the reports of parlia-mentary delegations to various meetings.

The Executive Committee stressed the importance of con-tinuous cooperation and coor-dination with various legisla-tive councils and organisations, and the role of parliamentary diplomacy in highlighting the kingdom’s civilisational, human rights and economic achieve-ments, under the comprehen-

sive development march spear-headed by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.

Saudi Crown Prince’s envi-ronmental initiatives praised

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia Am-bassador to Bahrain, HRH Prince Sultan bin Ahmed bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, has affirmed that the two initiatives of HRH Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the Crown Prince and Deputy Prime Min-ister, “Green Saudi Arabia” and “Green Middle East”, will de-fine the trend of the Kingdom

and the region in protecting the earth and nature.

He added the initiatives will map out a well-defined and am-bitious roadmap and contribute substantially to attaining global goals.

The Saudi Ambassador noted that the Kingdom is determined to bring about a constant inter-national effect, given its pio-neering role.

He pointed out that the king-dom will embark on implement-ing the “Green Middle East” in-itiative, together with brotherly countries from the Gulf Coop-eration Council (GCC) and the Middle East.

He said around 40 million hectares of degraded lands in the Gulf region and the Mid-dle East will be rehabilitated by planting 10 billion trees inside the Kingdom in the next decades and increasing the current area surrounded by trees up to twelve times.

The Ambassador noted that through both initiatives, Saudi Arabia will work on reducing carbon emissions by over 4% of the international contributions.

He pointed out the renewa-ble energy projects which will provide 50% of electricity pro-duction in the kingdom by 2030.

He also pointed out the clean hydrocarbon technologies that will eliminate more than 130 million tons of carbon emis-sions, in addition to raising the rate of waste diversion from landfills to 94%.

BD4,000 compensation for woman beaten by ex-husband

• Man ‘inhumanely assaulted’ his ex-wife before the divorce

The Lower Criminal Court ordered a Bah-

raini man to compensate his former wife BD4,000 for beating her.

The man is said to have inhumanely assaulted his ex-wife before the divorce, causing her severe injuries including fractures in the pelvis, bruises on the face and damage to the retina of the eye, which kept her in the hospital for days for treatment.

“My client lodged a com-plaint at the police station after the incident which kept her at the hospital for a couple of days to receive treatment. The assault left my client with hearing loss in the left ear and loss of smell too. It also caused other serious injuries to her such as fractures in her back and rib cage as well as skull,” the woman’s lawyer Ibtisam Al Sabagh said.

“My client was saved by her brother and father who rushed to the scene and found her motionless in a pool of blood.”

Al Sabagh also revealed that the woman suffered deep depression following the incident.

Woman jailed for inciting prostitution and adultery

citing debauchery has been jailed for six months behind bars.

The woman is said to have featured in a video encour-aging others into adultery and prostitution.

The Public Prosecution launched an investigation to uncover the identity of the woman after receiving a tip-off from the Anti Cy-ber Crime Directorate at the Ministry of Interior.

According to court files, the woman publicly insti-gated prostitution in the video which she published on one of her social media accounts. She was charged with inciting prostitution and adultery and misusing social media.

The Public Prosecution described her violation as a blatant of Bahrain’s so-cial values and principles as well as norms, and ordered for her imprisonment.

Works Minister inspects Capital Governorate tenth district’s projects

ning Minister Eng. Essam bin Abdullah Khalaf made an inspection visit to the tenth district areas in the Capital Governorate to monitor the infrastructure projects and municipal services.

He was accompanied by Ali Muhammad Ishaqi, representa-tive of the department and head of the Capital Secretariat, Saleh Tarrada, Director of Roads Maintenance and Projects De-partment, Eng. Sayed Badr Ala-wi, Director of Roads Planning and Design Department, Eng. Maha Khalifa Hamadeh, and a number of engineers at the Ministry.

During the visit, the Minister reviewed a number of requests and needs aimed at improving the services provided to citi-zens, including road services, sanitation and municipal pro-jects.

He directed the Ministry’s engineers to study the requests

submitted by Ishaqi and the possibility of implementing them on the ground.

Dr Khalaf said that the Min-istry will work on the construc-tion of a main rainwater drain-age line on 45th Street to solve the flooding problem.

It also plans to launch a pro-ject to solve flooding in Com-plex 815 in Isa Town, in ad-dition to studying a proposal to establish an acceleration path on Istiklal Street from 45th Street to solve the traffic congestion problem on 45th Street.

A number of sites will also be studied to establish high-speed heights in Al Aker and Sanad, in addition to preparing detailed

designs for the development of Al Aker Al Gharbi Street. It will also work on the rehabilitation and development of the current stadium in Al Aker Al-Gharbi complex at Block 626.

Regarding the establishment of a garden in Sanad, the Min-ister said that the site specified for the park is currently part of a project to re-plan a number of government properties in the area in the Urban Planning Authority.

Ishaqi extended his sincere thanks and appreciation to Dr Khalaf and the Ministry’s en-gineers for their visit to the re-gion and his interest in follow-ing up the implementation of projects that serve the people.

Huawei released its 2020 Annual Report yesterday,

saying that its growth slowed, but the business performance was “largely” in line with the forecast.

Sales revenue in 2020 rounded off at approximately US$136.7 billion, up 3.8% year-on-year, and its net profit reached US$9.9 billion, up 3.2% year-on-year.

Despite operational difficul-ties brought about by US sanc-tions in 2019 and 2020, Hua-wei said it would continue to embrace transparency by dis-closing operational data to gov-

IATA says travel pass app to launch on Apple mid-AprilReuters | Dubai

Global airline industry body IATA said yesterday a dig-

ital travel pass for COVID-19 test results and vaccine cer-tificates would be launched on the Apple platform in mid-April.

The digital travel pass, cur-rently in the testing phase, had been planned to be launched by the end of March.

IATA Regional Vice Presi-dent for Africa and the Middle East Kamil Alawadhi said it was expected to launch on the Apple platform around April 15, and later for the Android platform.

“But the application will only achieve its success once airlines, different countries, airports adopt it,” Alawadhi said.

UK-based carrier Virgin At-lantic said on Friday it would trial the IATA app on its Lon-don to Barbados route from April 16. Barbados has said it will accept the pass at its bor-der, one of the first countries to accept a digital pass instead of paper documentation.

IATA has said its travel pass will help speed up check-ins.

“A huge amount of air-l ines have requested to be on board,” Alawadhi said.

China’s legislature yesterday approved sweeping changes

to Hong Kong’s electoral sys-tem, which a Foreign Ministry Spokesperson said, “will ensure the stability of Hong Kong in the long run.”

The spokesperson added: “The changes will provide strong institutional safeguards for the full and faithful imple-mentation of the policy of One Country, Two Systems and the

principle of “patriots adminis-tering Hong Kong”.

The move, according to Chi-na, systemically revises and improves the methods for the selection of the Chief Execu-tive of the Hong Kong SAR and the formation of the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong SAR.

The changes, the spokesper-son said, will better ensure ex-tensive and balanced political participation of Hong Kong res-idents and serve the interests of all social strata, all sectors and

all parties of Hong Kong society. “We are convinced that the

new electoral system will help foster a better political, social, legal and business environment and usher in brighter develop-ment prospects for Hong Kong.”

The statement said that Hong Kong “is a special administra-tive region of China and Hong Kong affairs are China’s internal affairs.”

“The Chinese government has the resolve and confidence to safeguard the sovereignty, secu-

rity and development interests of the country and the prosper-ity and stability of Hong Kong.”

The Ad-Diriyah Biennale Foundation yesterday an-nounced the theme for Saudi Arabia’s first contemporary art Biennale titled “Feeling the Stones”. It takes inspira-

tion from the slogan “Crossing the river by feeling the stones,” which emerged during the 1980s - a metaphor for action at a time of social and economic transformation. The Biennale will take place at the JAX district in Diriyah from 7th December 2021 to 7th March 2022.

“We hope that this exhibition will expose new generations of viewers to global contemporary art, not just as a mode of visual expression but as a space for critical thinking. The art scene in Saudi Arabia finds itself at a crucial juncture, and art has an im-portant role to play in reflecting on key issues of the moment,” Philip Tinari, Director and Chief Executive of UCCA Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing and curator of the Biennale, said.

The Biennale will take place in a 27,000 square meters area in the recently developed creative district of JAX in Diriyah. Initiated by the Ministry of Culture as part of its efforts to support the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 strategic framework and Quality of Life Program, and overseen by the Ad-Diriyah Bien-nale Foundation, it will present two Biennales alternating each year: contemporary art (2021) and Islamic arts (2022).

The exhibition will unfold in six sections examining themes that include memory and preservation, cultural transmission, social engagement, the Anthropocene and the spiritual. It aims to create new connections between the Saudi and international art worlds, bringing new trends in global contemporary art to Saudi Arabia’s burgeoning cultural scene with nearly 70 artists exhibiting.

“Saudi Arabia’s first art Biennale is an important milestone and builds on the unprecedented cultural transformation un-derway in the Kingdom,” said Aya Albakree, CEO of Ad-Diriyah Biennale Foundation. “It is part of a wider plan to transform Ad-Diriyah into a global arts destination and encourage dia-logue between artists from around the world in a dedicated environment that supports creative expression.”

The pace of climate change is assuming worrisome proportions for Bahrain as the same is manifesting itself in the form of rising sea levels, soil erosion, and rising ambient temperatures. The almost irreversible process of climate change is also

accelerating the desertification process and drying up the ground water table as well. In difficult times such as these, man-made challenges in the form of air and water pollution are only exacerbating an already grim ecological scenario and amplifying the adverse impacts of climate change. Given these conditions extra ordinary measures in the form of a national green campaign can not only help safeguard the environment but also ensure safety of public health.

Various governmental departments in Bahrain have responded to climate change with many appreciable measures. One of the recent most initiative by the government has been to make the popular Bahrain Grand Prix go green from 2022. The Kingdom of Bahrain’s Sustainable Energy Authority has recently completed a feasibility study for the initiative, which accounted for the circuit’s entire annual energy needs and will ensure that all the energy used by the forthcoming Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in 2022 will come from sustainable energy sources. Similarly, the government is also working with 195 countries to try and stop the use of Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) which will have a far reaching im-pact on containing the rate of Ozone depletion and also rein in the runaway temperatures.

The latest agreement between India and Bahrain arrived at by the Clean Energy Working Group is yet another example of the initiatives being taken by the kingdom of Bahrain to increase capacity building in renewable energy sector by encouraging public and private sector collaboration between both the countries. These measures can make a tremendous difference in slowing the impact of climate change, but given the enormity of the challenges facing the environment, Bahrain needs to change gears and adopt a more aggressive approach to its Green Campaign. This alone can deliver results in a timely manner and prevent irreversible damage to the ecology and biodi-versity of the nation.

Other nations in the region are already calibrating their response to the alarming speed of climate change. For a country whose electric-ity generation depends on burning fossil fuels, Saudi is surely but boldly making efforts to give robust push to its green agenda.

The key to a successful green campaign is persistent efforts by the government and large scale initiatives. Bahrain must add scale to its green initiatives and as foremost step, the nation needs a large scale roll out of renewable energy programmes that seek to replace fossil fuel usage by up to 50 per cent in the next 5 years with renewable energy. In order to ensure this, the Bahrain can explore shifting of all domestic energy consumption to renewable energy and gradually phase out fossil fuel driven cars and actively encourage electric vehicles(EV). With almost all major car man-ufacturer’s having electric vehicles in their portfolio, replacement of fossil fuel powered cars with those powered by renewable electricity is not a difficult proposition at all.

The national green campaign must have excellent infrastructure at its disposal. For instance if EV roll out is to be successful then ready availability of charging stations with interval 5 km distance from each other coupled with on-site technical support will help making the EV initiative not only a re-sounding national success, but will also put Bahrain as the first country in the region to have fully phased out the polluting fossil fuel cars and commercial vehicles in favour of EV powered vehicles.

Similarly, making it mandatory for every household and office building to generate 25-50 per cent of its energy requirement from renewable energy will give a major push to the national green campaign initiative.

Climate change is in overdrive, Bahrain must recalibrate its green initiatives to ensure a bold and active response to ensure that the nation is a step ahead in its efforts to protect the environment.

Singer-actor Demi Lovato, who never shies away from

speaking her mind, recently opened up about her future plans to start a family.

As per People magazine, Lovato revealed that she might want to adopt in Saturday’s episode of the podcast ‘The Joe Ro-gan Experience’.

When asked if she wants to have chil-dren of her own, she responded, “I used to. I think if anything, I want to adopt, more than anything.”

“I don’t know, I was engaged to a man last year,” Lo-vato told Rogan of her past rela-tionship with ex Max Ehrich.

Ariana Grande has been named the next coach for Season 21 of “The Voice.”

NBC announced the news on Tuesday, noting that Grande will have a seat next to return-

ing coaches Kelly Clarkson, John Legend and Blake Shelton. Carson Daly is also set to continue hosting the music competition series.

The 27-year-old Grammy winner said in a statement Tuesday that she’s “so honored and excited” to join the “Voice” family.

“I have been a huge fan of the show for such a long time. I can’t wait to go head-to-head with the incredible coaches, get to know these new artists and help to take

their craft to the next level,” the “Positions” singer said.

The network is just as elated to welcome Grande a seat.

BRAVE CF 50 headliners Jarrah Al-Silawi and Ismail Naurdiev were very close

to starting their fight one day early during the official face-offs for the historic event.

BRAVE CF Super Welterweight champion Al-Silawi and his challenger Naurdiev will headline the historic BRAVE CF 50, which goes down this Thursday at the beautiful Arad Fort, in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Both men made weight under the Super Welterweight limit of175 lbs (79,4 kg), with Jarrah coming in at 174,4 lbs or 79,1 kg, and Naurdiev stepping on the scale at 174,6 lbs or 79,2 kg.

A few minutes later, as they faced off they brought the heat that’s expected to be all over the BRAVE CF Arena tomorrow. Al-Si-lawi and Naurdiev touched foreheads and exchanged trash talk before the champ used his hand to push the challenger’s face away, and the two were immediately separated by BRAVE CF staff before an all-out brawl was initiated.

In the co-main event, Middleweight champion Mohammad Fakhreddine, at-tempting to become the first Arab fighter to be a two-weight world champion, stepped in the scales for the vacant Light Heavy-weight title fight at 203lbs or 92,1 kg, while his opponent Mohammed Said Maalem weighed in at 201,9 lbs or 91,6 kg.

Both men also had an intense staredown, sizing each other up in the last contact be-fore fight night. Fakhreddine never took his eyes off Said Maalem, even when the two posed for pictures post-staredown.

In total, two fighters missed weight as Brad Katona will give Borislav Nikolic 30% of his purse, while Maciej Gierszewski will take 20% of Felipe Silva’s purse - Katona and Silva both missed weight for their re-spective bouts. BRAVE CF 50 will officially put BRAVE Combat Federation as the only organization in mixed martial arts to have traveled to 21 countries in its first 50 events.

Bahrain International Cir-cuit (BIC) is set to host

back-to-back nights of excit-ing karting battles on Thurs-day and Friday (Editor’s note: April 1 and 2) as the action nev-er stops at “The Home of Mo-torsport in the Middle East” in Sakhir.

BIC’s world-class karting fa-cility, Bahrain International Karting Circuit (BIKC), will be the setting of the second and third rounds of the 2021 Bahrain Karting Sprint Cham-pionship (BKSC), featuring the Bahrain Rotax Max Challenge (BRMC).

High-octane racing will be held along BIKC’s 1.414-kilo-metre CIK-FIA track and it will feature competition in the BRMC’s various categories, in-cluding the Senior Max, Max Masters, Junior Max, Mini Max and Micro Max.

All the proceedings will be

run with strict health protec-tion measures in place, in line with government regulations and guidance.

Both rounds are to take place under BIKC’s bright floodlights, starting from 5pm and concluding with the po-dium ceremonies at around 8.30pm.

They follow a thrilling first round held in mid-March, in which Fahad Alkhaled (Senior Max), Fahad Almuqla (Junior Max), Luca Houghton (Mini Max) and Shaikh Rashid bin Salman Al Khalifa (Micro Max) clinched their respective victories in class.

Najma captured the coveted title after defeating Barbar 31-24 in a tightly contested final, which was played at the Bahrain Handball Association (BHA) are-na in Um Al Hassam.

With the result, the victors claimed their fifth title in the history of the league.

They won last year’s crown following a penalty shootout de-cision over Al Shabab. This year, however, they didn’t require to go beyond the hour-long contest.

Right after the final, the two teams were awarded their re-spective trophies and medals in a podium ceremony attended by BHA officials.

Goalkeeper Mohammed Ab-dulhussan was in brilliant form

for Najma last night, making a number of crucial saves in the game’s closing stages. None were bigger than his successive stops late in the second half that helped his team preserve a 26-21 advantage, with Barbar looking to make one final push to fight back.

Veteran Jaffar Abdulqader did his best to keep Barbar in the game, but Najma were just too good on the night and goals from Bilal Basham and Komail Mah-foodh put them ahead 29-24.

Abdulla Abdukarim then pegged the final score with the game’s last goal.

Najma were already in control of the contest in the first half, taking a 16-11 lead into the locker

rooms.For Najma, Abdulhussain had

plenty of help from the offensive end. Mahfoodh and Mahdi Saad shared the honours of joint-top scorers in the win withsix goals apiece, while Ali Eid contributed five. They also got big contribu-tions from Hasan Madan, Mo-hammed Mirza and Ali Mirza, among others.

For Barbar, Jaffar Abdulqad-er was the game’s top scorer in the loss. He finished with seven goals.

Meanwhile, taking the league’s bronze medals were Al Ahli. They claimed third place over-all following a 34-24 win over Samaheej in their final classifi-cation contest held on Tuesday.

Bahrain to learn of Tokyo Olympics groupings todayBahrain’s senior men’s na-

tional handball team will today learn of their grouping for the opening stage of the Men’s Handball Tournament at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

The official draw will take place in the International Handball Federation (IHF) head office in Basel, Switzerland. It will be held virtually and will be streamed live online.

The Bahrainis are making their historic first-ever ap-pearance at any Olympics. They

have been seeded in Row 6 for the draw. They are joined by their counterparts from Argen-tina in the same row.

Row one comprises Denmark and Norway, row two features France and Sweden, row three includes Germany and Portu-gal, row four features Brazil and hosts Japan, while row five sees Spain and Egypt.

The final seedings were de-termined following the com-pletion of the Tokyo Handball Qualification Tournament.

The Bahrainis booked their berth at the Tokyo Games af-ter winning the Men’s Asian Qualification Tournament held in Doha in October of 2019, de-feating South Korea in the final.

The nationals are to be coached at the Olympics by Icelandic tactician Aron Kris-tjansson. Kristjansson is no stranger to Bahraini hand-ball. He was responsible for steering the nationals to their historic first-ever Olympic berth.
