No plans to reserve jobs for Bahrainis: Official

Muhannad Mansour/[email protected]

Manama

Bahrain has no plans to reserve certain jobs

to Bahrainis as followed by some neighbouring GCC countries, Labour and Social Development Labour Affairs Undersecretary Sabah Al Dossary said yesterday.

In an interview with Al Ayam daily, Al Dossary ruled out any intention at the moment to limit some jobs to Bahrainis as is done in Saudi Arabia.

He pointed out that there was no plan at the moment to limit some jobs to Bahrainis, because the Bahraini economy is free and depends on the principle of competitiveness.

The official underlined that the ministry had taken several initiatives to employ jobless Bahrainis and reduce unemployment rates.

“Many training and rehabilitation programmes are being developed by the ministry to bring Bahrainis to the labour market in a highly efficient manner, in order to enable them to compete with foreign workers. The directives of the Prime Minister HRH Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa are clear in this matter, to make Bahraini workers the

best choice for companies and institutions. There is an accepted disparity between Bahraini and foreign workers, but if the Bahraini employee becomes threatened and there is dominance and control of foreigners, there will be a different look and treatment in this matter,” he added.

Al Dossary’s statements comes two months after MP Ghazi Al Rahma and a group of MPs submitted a bill to form a list of professions that should be done only by Bahrainis.

MP Al Rahma told DT News yesterday that the list of positions limited to Bahrainis would include both the public and private sectors.

Some of the positions are accountants, human resources specialists, legal consultants, financial consultants, financial experts, information technology specialists and other jobs.

“The main objective is to contribute to the enhancement of Bahrainisation in the private sector, especially that the sector is experiencing a significant decline in the rates of Bahrainization and an increase in the number of foreigners in many jobs, especially senior positions, with no justification for this. This necessitates the

intervention of the state to determine a number of professions and limit their employment to Bahrainis, which is a right of the state, as it does not diminish the rights of foreigners and preserves the safety of the Bahraini labour market,” the lawmaker said explaineing the goals of the bill.

MP Al Rahma emphasised that the bill would have a positive impact on social stability and would contribute to solving the unemployment issue among Bahrainis.

He elaborated further, “The bill would serve the employment of Bahrainis in jobs that are appropriate for their specialisations and educational levels. What is happening today in many companies and businesses is that Bahrainis are employed to achieve the

Bahrainization rates imposed by the authorities without consideration of efficiency and academic level of the employees. This motivates many companies to resort to employing Bahrainis without university degrees and in small jobs, while the holders of university degrees and higher qualifications are suffering from unemployment.”

When asked if the bill may be described as “unfair” to expats by some critics, Al Rahma replied, “There is no prejudice in this bill. We respect and appreciate all foreign competencies. But, priority should be given to the Bahraini citizens. This is applied in all countries.”

Saudi Arabia recently announced that 32 commercial

sectors would be limited to Saudi nationals in the next few months.

Saudi Labour Ministry also banned the issuance of permanent, temporary or seasonal work permits to expats in 19 professions, such as Human Resources Chief Administrators, Labour Affairs Directors and other positions.

Bahraini products need branding to succeed in the

domestic and international markets, according to a Bahraini economist.

A ‘Made in Bahrain’ or a similar branding is necessary for local products to get the recognition it deserves, said Yousef Mashal, a candidate for the BCCI elections next month. According to him, such branding would help grab attention to the products and help customers recognize it easily.

“There are many things we can do for the branding. One example is if we can include a logo on our products that has a picture of an old Bahraini dhow or the Tree of Life. These are small things which will show our unique personality,” he said.

“The branding must highlight Bahrain’s strengths such as high-quality living, economic freedom, Arab culture and hospitality and world-class business environment. The Chamber of Commerce and the business community must take the concept of branding more seriously and take advantage of it,” he said, adding,” Every country has a brand, however, it is not something we make, but something we live and Bahrain’s values and beliefs are its brand.”

“The chamber, as well all the residents of Bahrain has a responsibility to contribute to the economic and social growth. We need to celebrate who we and our identity as Bahrainis with a rich culture and heritage,” he said.

He said that Bahrain can use such branding to differentiate from its neighbouring countries and have an advantage. “This will give us an edge because there are not many regional examples of such branding in use. Apart from some efforts in Saudi Arabia, there has not been major branding efforts in the region, so it is time for us to step up and make this a reality,” he said. He added that branding Bahraini products would be top of his agenda if he gets elected to the chamber.

Riyadh’s Ritz-Carlton will reopen on February 11, the

hotel said yesterday, more than three months after it became a holding place of princes and

ministers detained in an anti-corruption purge.

The luxury hotel was closed for business since the unprecedented probe was launched on November 4 by

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who has consolidated his grip on power since his shock appointment as heir to the throne in June.

A hotel receptionist

reached by phone confirmed to AFP that room bookings were available from noon on February 11.

The Ritz-Carlton’s website had last month listed rooms as available from February 14. On Sunday it showed availability from February 11.

Many of the high-profile suspects, including billionaire Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal, have been released in recent weeks in exchange for what officials have dubbed financial settlements.

Attorney General Sheikh Saud al-Mojeb has said that $107 billion has been recovered so far in the crackdown in various forms of assets handed over that included property, securities and cash.

Bahrain added seven medals to their tally at

the fourth edition of the Arab Women Sports Tournament (AWST), being held in Sharjah.

On the second day of the tournament, Bahrain Shooting Club clinched two gold medals in the 10m pistol team and singles event, in addition to a silver medal in the singles.

The nationals topped the team section, scoring 1,651 points in total to secure the gold medal. They were followed by Sharjah Ladies Club (1,637) and Oman (1,596) in second and third places, respectively.

In the singles event, Mouza Abdulrahim put on a superb performance to win the competition’s gold. Second was another Bahraini Aisha Al Braiki to wrap up the shooting trio medal triumph.

Early on, Al Hala Club’s Maram Mohammed and Maha Mohammed both settled for third place and the bronze medal at the Fencing floret singles section after a brave show at Sajaya Young Ladies Club.

Bahrain added two more medals in the floret and epee team events, taking home the silver and bronze medals,

respectively. The results lifted Bahrain’s

total of medals to eight after two days of action. Fai Janahi opened Bahrain’s medal account at the tournament, taking home the karate’s kumite under-50kg weight category.

Meanwhile, the Youth and Sports Ministry team started their title quest with a convincing 76-58 win over Somalia’s Mogadishu Club at Sharjah Girls Hall.

The Bahrainis, coached by national tactician Fadel Milad, ruled the game from start to finish for a well-deserved victory.

Brandie Rene and Tabyatha Donne topped scored for the Youth and Sports Ministry team, which proved vital. The Bahrainis face Jeddah United of Saudi Arabia in their second match tonight.

In volleyball, Muharraq Club kick-started their campaign in the volleyball tournament with a 1-3 (12-25, 25-23, 19-25, 18-25) defeat to defending champions Al-Wasl of the UAE. Muharraq takes on Sharjah Club in their second match of the competition.

Bahrain is sending eight teams to the tournament, being organaised for the fourth successive time. Other teams in the fray include Bahrain

Club (table tennis, shooting, archery), Busaiteen (athletics) and Bahrain Karate Academy (karate).

A total of 68 teams from 16 countries, represented by more than 1,000 athletes are taking part in the event.

In addition to Bahrain, other countries taking part are Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Morocco,

Algeria, Lebanon, Palestine, Sudan, Egypt, Libya, Iraq, Somalia and Djibouti and hosts the UAE.

Egypt’s army destroys terrorist hideouts in SinaiCairo

Egyptian troops destroyed 16 terrorist hideouts and

an ammunition storehouse in central North Sinai province, the Egyptian army announced yesterday.

The military forces also destroyed four acres of marijuana crops in addition to a large amount of marijuana ready for sale, said Egyptian army spokesman Tamer al-Refaay in a statement.

“The forces of the Third Field Army continue their efforts to destroy terrorist

and criminal elements in Central Sinai,” the statement said.

In late January, the army announced that it destroyed 14 terrorist hideouts in the same part of North Sinai province bordering Israel and the Palestinian Gaza Strip.

North Sinai used to be the centre of Egypt’s terrorist attacks that killed hundreds of policemen and soldiers following the military’s removal of former Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013. (Xinhua)

China said yesterday it is “firmly opposed” to the

United States’ new nuclear weapons policy statement, describing its speculation about Chinese intentions as “wild guesses”.

The US Defense Department’s Nuclear Posture Review released Friday outlines the Pentagon’s nuclear ambitions under President Donald Trump, while spelling out how it foresees nuclear threats in the coming decades.

Although the review largely focuses on Russia, several sections are dedicated to the lack of transparency in China’s nuclear buildup.

The report says China has added new types of nuclear capabilities -- ranging from a mobile intercontinental ballistic missile to a new ballistic missile submarine -- “with little to no transparency into its intentions”.

The report makes “wild guesses” about China’s intentions and exaggerates the threat of its nuclear force, defence ministry spokesman Ren Guoqiang said in a statement.

China is “firmly opposed to this”, Ren said.

China “has always kept its own nuclear forces at the minimum level required by national security”, Ren said, pointing out that the US has the world’s largest nuclear arsenal.

“We hope that the United States will abandon its Cold War mentality,” Ren said.

Since taking office in 2012 President Xi Jinping has pushed for a muscular China, including calls last October to develop a “world-class” military by 2050.

China’s neighbours have watched warily as the People’s Liberation Army has upgraded its arsenal with increasingly sophisticated weaponry and sought to create a more effective and professional fighting force.

Upgrades to its nuclear arsenal have received less attention, partly because of its small size, estimated by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute at just 270 warheads compared to 6,800 for the US.

China has also long

maintained it will never allow first use of its atomic weapons.

China “always abides by the principle of no first use of nuclear weapons under any circumstances”, Ren said, and will “unconditionally not use or threaten to use nuclear

weapons against non-nuclear weapon states.”

The US military wants to revamp its nuclear arsenal and develop new low-yield atomic weapons, largely in response to Russian actions in recent years, the Pentagon said. (AFP)

By Invitation

(The views and opinions expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the policy or position of this newspaper.)

Organizations continue to ask more of their employees, so people are coming up with new ways to meet those

expectations, which often means not knowing when to shut down for the day.

Notebooks and smartphones have made it easier for people to access their work data from virtually anywhere. Perhaps they’ve made it too easy. With the boundaries between work and home blurring, increasing numbers of people are getting burnt out—which not only affects their productivity at work, but also their health.

While companies are most likely profiting from the extra hours their employees are putting in, at what point does enabling them to do so begin to impact the company in a negative way? It’s impossible to tell people when they can and can’t work, but studies are showing that companies are at least trying to create a better work/life balance for their employees by instilling certain expectations.

One such expectation is instructing workers to stop checking their email after work hours and on weekends. A tall task, for sure, but even addressing your concern for these habits might be enough for workers to pause before they fire up their work notebooks on a Saturday afternoon.

So, what’s the best way to truly walk away from work when you step out of the office each night? It’s often hard to tell your employees to forget about their work after hours, but here are a few tricks you can suggest to them to ensure that their work stays in the office and away from home.

Keep it cleanIt’s easy to let your inbox pile up with emails, but when you’re

staring down at all of those unanswered requests, it’s often hard to resist the urge to make a dent while you’re at home. If you keep your inbox clean and mean from the beginning—filing away the emails that don’t need to be answered right away, and flagging important emails that can wait until you’re back in the office—you’ll shorten your to-do list.

Sometimes it’s as simple as separating your emails into different categories. One category can be for emails that don’t need a response, another category could be for emails that need to be forwarded or acted upon. This way, you can look at your inbox from a less daunting angle and maybe you won’t be as compelled to work late into the night.

Forward thinkingThis one is a catch twenty-two, but try to get a head start on the

to-do items that you won’t be able to put off forever. Of course, if you had ample time to work ahead, then you obviously wouldn’t need to work after-hours or on the weekend. What working ahead really means is that maybe you put in an extra hour or two while you’re in the office, so you don’t have to work when you’re out of the office. After all, this is what work/life balance is all about. Of course, nobody wants you to spend all of your time in the office, but they also don’t want you working when you’re supposed to be at home with your family and friends. An extra hour in the office every once in a while could have a dramatic effect on whether or not you have the desire (or need) to log on when you get home.

Take a breatherIf all else fails, don’t feel guilty about taking what is commonly

known as a “mental health day.” This is time set aside for you to completely check out of the office and take a day to do something fun for yourself, gather your thoughts or catch up on sleep. But in order for a mental health day to be successful, you need to rid yourself of the distractions of work. That means no checking your work emails and no answering voicemails.

How you ease back into work is almost as important as the break itself. It won’t do you any good to dive headfirst back into your old habits. The best suggestion is to plan out your first day and week back in the office—decide what has to be taken care of right away, and decide what can wait. Most importantly, remember that it’s okay to go home early and leave your work where it belongs—in the office.

Taking time away from not only work, but the technology that connects you to work, can improve your health, happiness and productivity.

Bahrain FinTech Bay (“BFB”) and the Fintech

Consortium (“FTC”) have announced a strategic partnership with OffrBox, a New York City based Fintech startup that has developed an end-to-end real estate transaction platform where you can buy and sell residential properties online. OffrBox was featured as one of New York City’s Top 50 Startups to Watch in 2017.

OffrBox has created an online market where participants looking to buy or sell residential real estate can list, search and review properties on the OffrBox online platform. The unique value proposition to customers is that once a property has been identified, participants can review detailed property documentation, negotiate the purchase price, and then complete their contract

process and deal closing via the platform. OffrBox reduces wasted time and frustration by creating a seamless transaction flow from initial offer to the actual purchase closing.

OffrBox is excited to bring these capabilities to Bahrain and contribute its knowledge and technology towards the development of the country’s fintech ecosystem. OffrBox

is currently expanding the platform to integrate real estate financing and blockchain for title registration. These added modules will enable buyers and sellers to experience a streamlined real estate transaction process with automated clearing and settlement of loan funding for purchases and digitized title transfer and registration at

closing. Maissan Al Maskati,

Chairman of Fintech Consortium, said: “We are delighted to bring OffrBox to Bahrain Fintech Bay. Real estate is an important sector in the Kingdom and wider GCC region, and we believe OffrBox’s innovative technology can help modernize the sector and generate greater efficiency by streamlining real estate transactions and reducing their costs significantly.”

Eric Andrew, President and Founder of OffrBox, said, “We have taken much note and interest in Bahrain and its regional leadership position in Fintech. Specifically, we believe that Bahrain Fintech Bay offers us a unique opportunity to deploy the OffrBox platform, enhance its capability through local innovation, and work with industry to develop leading technology for real estate investment.”

Middle Eastern stock markets sank yesterday

in response to Friday’s tumble on Wall Street, after U.S. data showed the strongest annual wage growth since 2009 and raised the risk of more interest rate hikes than expected this year.

The Saudi index dropped 0.6 per cent with falling shares outnumbering gainers by 105 to 74. Saudi Arabian Mining Co (Ma‘aden), which had fallen 4.9pc on Thursday after reporting a surprise fourth-quarter loss, lost a further 1.7pc.

Mediterranean & Gulf Cooperative Insurance and

Dubai’s index slid 0.8pc in its lowest trading volume this year as Emaar Properties, which like other real estate firms could face tougher business conditions if higher U.S. interest rates are passed on through the Gulf’s currency pegs, fell 1.2pc.

Qatar’s index tumbled

2.7pc, its biggest drop since last June, with real estate firms particularly weak; United Development lost 3.4pc and Barwa Real Estate slipped 3.2pc.

COLOURINGSFOOD

When it comes to food, at first it is the eyes that are engaged and later the fingers, the tongue and the palate come into action. Hence the first impact of food on the senses is visual. So when you look at dainty, brightly coloured foods, you are drawn towards them. Colours play a very important role in making a food look appetising. But most of the times, the foods are added with synthetic colours that may have heavy metals or carcinogens and are hence dangerous. But you can very easily make food colours from naturally available ingredients. Here is a list of colours that you can make from objects from your kitchen counter.

To make red colour at home soak rose petals in water for one hour and then grind to a fine paste.

Use yellow paprika powder to give a light-yellow colour to your food.

Black coloured food which is a huge trend these days can be made with activated charcoal or extra dark cocoa powder.

Take pureed spinach, matcha tea powder, spinach powder or parsley powder to give green colour to your food.

Turmeric mixed with a little water can give a bright yellow colour to your lattes, gravies and even cakes. You can mask the smell of turmeric with food essence. You can also use saffron. It will give an amazing aroma to the food.

You can add a rich brown colour to your food by mixing in cocoa powder and for lighter shades add espresso or cinnamon powder.

Use beetroot powder to add purple colour to your cakes and gravies. You can also use the juice of this vegetable, but it may interfere with the consistency. (TOI)

Powdered orange rind and car-rot juice or carrot powder give a bright orange colour.

British actor, writer and comedian James Corden feels homesick.

“The Late Late Show” host, who is also the voice of Peter Rabbit in a major new movie that mixes live action and animation, may be planning an exit from the US when his chat-show contract ends in 2020. Or so it seems from his interview to Event Magazine, reports dailymail.co.uk.

“I’m almost certain that we won’t live here for ever because... I just don’t think we will,” he said, and added: “This point right now is the only time since we moved here when I’ve experienced genuine homesickness.”

The effect from the planetary aspects will bring an end to any lethargy you’ve been feeling. It’s an excellent day to get up and head into the open to do something active. Walking, running, or going on a hike can make great use of both your energy and creativity.

Take charge of your overall health today. You’ll likely wake up feeling energetic and well. Seize this opportunity to be active in doing things that will help continue your good feelings. Consider all aspects of your health, including emotional and spiritual. If you can, sit outside in the sunshine and fresh air to consider the areas of your life that could use a workout.

If there’s something crafty or artsy you’ve had your eye on and would really like to get but can’t afford, consider making it. Even if you don’t consider yourself artistic, you may surprise yourself if you give a project half a chance. There are numerous websites that cater to novices and can give you the support and instruction you need. Don’t dismiss your ability.

It’s the perfect day to get up and head outside. You’ll likely find yourself feeling positive and energetic, sunshine, and physical activity may be long overdue. Even if this is a workday for you, make the most of your breaks and lunch hour by walking. This evening may be the opportune time to get together with some friends for coffee.

It won’t be surprising if you find yourself getting frustrated with a close friend or partner today who is far less ambitious than you. The energy in the air can really emphasize your “go, go, go” way of reaching goals and achieving success. Others who are passive or fearful in this area may be difficult to understand. Yet each person has to do things in ways that are best for him or her.

See about using your good relationships with friends and loved ones today to get some group activities going. Chances are you’ll feel pretty good and the idea of socializing will appeal to you. See about inviting people over for supper or a game of cards. If you’re especially lively, some sports may be just the ticket to get you out and moving. Do whatever it takes to have some fun and get some fresh air today.

If you’re lacking a regular exercise routine, today’s a great day to turn that around. Exercise doesn’t have to wear you out or hurt. Even relaxing activities like walking or yoga are excellent ways to keep you in good shape. Participating in a sport that appeals to you like volleyball or bowling combines fun with exercise.

Put your ambition into action today. The day’s planetary aspects should find you feeling energetic and positive. Make the most of this by taking steps toward your goals. As you know, if you don’t actively pursue things, nothing will happen. The years can pass by so quickly and you wouldn’t want to be sitting on a rocker wondering “what if.”

Don’t be surprised if you wake up feeling super today. Chances are good that you’ll feel a renewed physical strength with energy to spare. That said, it might be a good day to tackle any projects that require you to use some muscle. Perhaps there’s some yard work that needs to be done or furniture you want to move around.

Don’t hesitate when it comes to taking on a project or making plans today. Extra energy will complement your organisational skills, making the perfect combination to handle almost anything. Be sure to write down your goals and plans to help keep you focused. If you decide to tackle any cleaning today, get rid of the things you never use.

Today should go well for you. Expect to feel a renewed energy and perspective on things, especially those that are work related. Make the most of this by working toward finishing projects that are waiting for you or by cleaning and organizing your desk or broom closet. Feel confident that you’ll be able to handle most any task in no time.

Today you may notice that you’re feeling very creative and ambitious. You might want to use these strengths to work directly on an artistic project. Or you may choose to channel that energy into activities like organizing your home or workspace. If you plan it out, there should be plenty of time to get to both if you have a mind to. Make the most of the day!

Banda Aceh, Indonesia

Indonesian police said yesterday they would press

ahead with an investigation into officers accused of publicly shaming transgender people in conservative Aceh province despite an angry protest against the probe.

North Aceh police chief Ahmad Untung Surianata and several of his subordinates have been

questioned by the police internal affairs unit following raids on beauticians’ premises in which 12 transgender staff were detained.

Officers were said to have forcibly cut the hair of some of them and made them wear male clothing and speak in a masculine voice.

Surianata said at the time that mothers had complained the transgender people were teasing their sons. (AFP)

“We have noticed that so many procurement activities have taken place from the embassy,” said Hans-Georg Maassen, head of the Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz (BfV), or Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution.

“From our point of view, they were for the missile programme but also partly for the nuclear programme,” Maassen added in an interview with German

public television channel ARD, to be aired today.

Extracts of the interview were published on Saturday.

Although the exact nature of the technology was not specified, the intelligence chief said they would have civilian and military uses.

“When we see such things, we stop them. But we cannot guarantee that we spot and block each attempt,” he said.

Germany’s domestic intelligence agency obtained clues on the technology procurements in 2016 and 2017, according to an investigation by ARD.

In 2014, it said a North Korean diplomat attempted to obtain equipment used in the development of chemical weapons. (AFP)

US House speaker Paul Ryan has come under fire

after citing a school worker who was $1.50 a week better off because of recent tax cuts.

Ryan deleted a tweet about a school secretary who, he said, was “pleasantly surprised” by the increase, BBC reported on Saturday.

The post was widely derided with many social media users saying $1.50 was not a significant pay hike.

It comes after President Donald Trump approved the most sweeping overhaul of the

US tax system in decades.Republicans say the tax

reforms will help businesses and individuals, and boost economic growth.

Democrats, who opposed the changes, say the cuts will

mainly benefit the ultra-rich.Ryan, the most senior

Republican in the US House of Representatives, had tweeted a link to a report by the Associated Press in which Julia Ketchum, a secretary at a public high school in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, said she would be $78 a year better off, which she said would more than cover her annual membership for the wholesale outlet Costco.

Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said Ryan deleted his “embarrassing tweet” because it was a “blatant admission” of the tax bill’s unfairness. (IANS)

At least two people were killed and 70 others

injured yesterday when a train carrying 147 people and a freight train collided in the eastern US state of South Carolina, authorities said.

The Amtrak train -- Train 91 -- travelling between New York and Miami derailed in Cayce, outside the state capital Columbia, in the collision with the CSX freight train, which took place at around 2:30 am (0730 GMT).

Amtrak, the national US railway service, said in a statement that the lead engine derailed along with some passenger cars. Eight crew members and 139 passengers were on board.

US media reported injuries ranged from cuts and bruises to broken bones.

The Lexington County

Sheriff’s Department confirmed all passengers had been evacuated. The local Red Cross opened a shelter in a school to help passengers.

T h e N a t i o n a l Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said it was investigating the incident. Officials added that although 5,000 gallons of fuel spilled following the crash, there was no danger to the public.

“The incident is very near the state farmers’ market and other residential areas but right now, everyone is safe,” said Derrec Becker, public information officer at the South Carolina Emergency Management Division.

Speaking to CNN, passenger Derek Pettaway said he was travelling south from Philadelphia to Orlando in a sleeper cabin when he was awoken by the impact of

the crash.Pettaway added Amtrak

staff evacuated passengers in a “really calm fashion.”

“Nobody was panicking,” he said. “I’m pretty sure everybody was asleep and I think people were in shock.”

It is not known how many people were traveling on the freight train, or whether one of the two trains was stationary at the time of the collision.

The accident is sure to raise questions about the safety of the nation’s railways.

It comes just days after another Amtrak train carrying several dozen Republican lawmakers including US House Speaker Paul Ryan hit a garbage truck in Virginia, killing one person and causing six others, including a congressman, to need hospital treatment.(AFP)

Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli

guided India to a c o m p r e h e n s i v e nine-wicket victory over South Africa in the second One-Day International

at SuperSport Park in Centurion yesterday.

India chased down the meagre 119-run target with 29.3 overs (177 balls) to spare as the visitors took 2-0 lead in the six-match series.

After Kohli

won the toss and opted to bowl first, Indian wrist spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav again proved too hot to handle for South African batsmen, as the duo helped the visitors bundle out the hosts for 118 in 32.2 overs. It was the lowest total ever scored on this ground.

Chasing the small target, Dhawan and Kohli added an unbeaten 93 runs for the second wicket after India lost opener Rohit Sharma (15) in the fourth over.

Dhawan hit nine fours in his 56-ball 51 knock, his 24th ODI fifty, while Kohli’s 46 off 50 balls included a six and four boundaries. Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada (1/24) was the

only bowler for the hosts to land a wicket. The one-sided contest witnessed a side drama too when the play was stopped for lunch with India needing just two runs to win and that too with nine wickets and 31 overs in hand.

India were 93/1 after 15 overs at the scheduled break. In terms of the playing conditions, the umpires extended play by four overs or 15 minutes.

To the astonishment of players, spectators and commentators, the umpires then stuck to the letter of the regulations and ordered a 40-minute lunch break after the end of the extension as India reached 117/1 in 19 overs. (TOI)

Bangladesh draw first TestChittagong

Mominul Haque became the first player from

Bangladesh to score a century in both innings of a Test as he steered his side to a draw in the opening match against Sri Lanka yesterday.

Mominul, who made 176 in the first innings, hit 105 off 174 balls to help Bangladesh reach 307-5 before the two teams accepted the draw with an hour’s play left on the fifth and final day in Chittagong.

Skipper Mahmudullah was at the crease on 28 not out

alongside Mosaddek Hossain (8 not out) when the stumps were drawn at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.

Sri Lanka held a 200-run first innings lead after declaring on a mammoth 713-9 in reply to Bangladesh’s 513.

The visitors fancied their chances for a victory when veteran spinner Rangana Herath picked up the crucial wicket of Mushfiqur Rahim off the last ball on the fourth day.

But Mominul, 18 not out

overnight, and Liton Das, who fell just six runs short of his maiden Test century, shared a crucial 180-run stand for the fourth wicket to frustrate the Sri Lankan bowlers.

It was Dhananjaya de Silva who broke their partnership, dismissing Mominul shortly after the left-hander scored his second century of the game with a single off Lakshan Sandakan.

Dimuth Karunaratne took the catch at slip to bring the curtains down on a fine

innings, featuring five fours and two sixes.

Man of the match Mominul had nicked a delivery from Herath on 89 but wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella failed to grab a low catch. (AFP)

Wolff ‘bothered’ by Esteben Ocon, Perez clashesLondon

Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff says he was

‘bothered’ by clashes between junior driver Esteban Ocon and his Force India Formula 1 team-mate Sergio Perez in 2017.

Discord between Perez and Mercedes protege Ocon - who had moved to Force India for his first full F1 season after a part-year with Manor - began with a team instructions controversy in Canada and escalated into collisions in Azerbaijan, Hungary and Belgium.

Force India then imposed team orders on the pair and they resolved their differences.

Ocon had approached Wolff for advice in dealing with Perez during their spat, hoping his

experience of managing Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg at Mercedes would help, but Wolff admitted that he was irritated by the Force India clashes.

“What bothers us are these intra-team rivalries that end with two damaged cars,” he said.

“This applies not only to Esteban, but also to ‘Checo’ [Perez]. As a team boss, I’m so annoyed by that.”

Ocon ended last season in eighth place in the drivers’ standings, one place and 13 points behind Perez in seventh.

Perez recorded Force India’s best race result of fourth in the Spanish Grand Prix, while Ocon’s personal bests were fifth in that race and Mexico. (Autosport)

Lille

Paris Saint-Germain moved 11 points clear at the top of Ligue 1

after recording a 3-0 victory at Lille on Saturday.

Yuri Berchiche opened the scoring for PSG in first-half stoppage time before Neymar put the game out of reach after 77 minutes.

Giovani Lo Celso added a third

with an audacious chip in the closing stages to complete a fine win for Unai Emery’s side.

Edinson Cavani was back in the starting line-up for PSG as he replaced the suspended Kylian Mbappe, while Emery also called upon Dani Alves and Thiago Silva.

The visiting side, who have lost just twice in the league this season,

had to wait until virtually the final kick of the opening half before taking the lead.

Lille failed to deal with Cavani’s cross and Berchiche was there to finish with a low shot.

Brazil international Neymar, an injury doubt for Saturday’s match, then scored his 18th Ligue 1 goal of the season with an unstoppable

free kick from the edge of Lille’s penalty area.

Lo Celso completed the rout with a delightful chip from just outside the 18-yard-box with just four minutes remaining.

The victory moves PSG comfortably clear of Marseille, with Lille just one point above the relegation places. (Espn)

PSG triumph at Lille Barcelona

Gerard Pique scored a late equaliser as Barcelona drew at Espanyol to

set a club record of 22 games unbeaten at the start of the La Liga season.

Philippe Coutinho hit the bar in the first half before Gerard Moreno’s header gave city rivals Espanyol the lead midway through the second.

With only eight minutes left, defender Pique headed home substitute Lionel Messi’s free-kick.

The draw extended Barcelona’s lead at top of the table to 12 points.

Second-placed Atletico Madrid face Valencia at 20:45 (19:45 GMT), while fourth-placed Real Madrid, who drew 2-2 with Levante on Saturday, trail Barcelona by 19 points.

Arsenal’s new signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has fired a

warning to their Premier League rivals saying he has much more to offer after scoring on his debut in the 5-1 win over Everton on Saturday.

Midfielder Aaron Ramsey scored a hat-trick while goals from striker Aubameyang and defender Laurent Koscielny sealed the win in a game that saw an attack-minded Arsenal flex their muscles in the first half.

“Is there more to come from me? I think so,” Aubameyang, who struck 37 minutes into his first game for the club after signing from Borussia Dortmund last week, said after the match.

“We won the game in the first half and the second was a bit different. We are all happy today.”

Veteran Italian forward Giampaolo Pazzini came off the bench to net

a dramatic late equaliser as relegation-battlers Levante held Real Madrid to a 2-2 draw on Saturday.

Fit-again captain Sergio Ramos headed the visitors into an early lead, but Emmanuel Boateng levelled just before half-time.

Levante keeper Olazabal Oier pulled off a brilliant save to deny Ramos a second before substitute Isco eventually made it 2-1 on 81 minutes. Pazzini, though, had the final say when he slotted past Keylor Navas with just a minute left.

The draw moves Real back up to fourth place ahead of Villarreal, but well adrift of leaders Barcelona, while Levante are three points clear of the dropzone.

Ramos had been struggling with a calf injury, along with Cristiano Ronaldo, but was back in the side at the Ciutat de Valencia.

Real Madrid were dangerous on the early counter attacks. Marcelo barged his way through to the penalty area, his wild shot took a big deflection and flew behind for a corner on 11 minutes.

The delivery from Toni Kroos was clipped towards the penalty spot, where Ramos got up to nod the ball down, which bounced up and past Oier, who looked to have been put off as Karim Benzema slid in.

Ronaldo -- who scored twice against both Deportivo La Coruna and Valencia -- had the chance to

swiftly double Real’s lead when picked out by the hard-working Benzema, who had won the ball back on the left touchline.

However, the Portugal forward could only lash an angled shot high into the stands.

Casemiro saw a long-range effort float over the bar with Oier backtracking, before Kroos shot was spilled by the Levante goalkeeper, who blocked Ronaldo’s follow-up.

Levante, though, were level three minutes before half-time. Jose

Morales was played behind the high Madrid line and raced clear ahead of Ramos. Navas made a smart save, but the ball dropped out to Boateng, who promptly rolled it back into the bottom right corner for a first LaLiga goal. (PA Sport)

Shaikh Salman bin Isa bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa and Ahmed

Al Muyini both had twice the reason to celebrate on Friday at Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) in Sakhir.

They won both of their races in their championships, held as part of Round Five of National Race Day.

Shaikh Salman claimed his victories in the BIC 2,000cc Challenge, while Al Muyini rode to his double in the Bahrain Motorcycle Racing 600.

Hussain Al Aswad was also a winner, taking the chequered flag in the sole race of the Bahrain Super Sport Championship (BSSP) 125.

In the BIC 2,000cc Challenge, Shaikh Salman narrowly won race one ahead of pole-sitter Raed Himmo. Both were driving Honda Civics, but Shaikh Salman was 2.570 seconds quicker to the finish in 12 laps. He claimed the chequered flag in 15 minutes 40.519 seconds.

Mohammed Faqihi, also behind the wheel of a Civic, completed the podium placers 12.888s off the winning pace in third.

In race two, Shaikh Salman completed his double

in 15:50.212. He was 3.810s in front of Nasser Al Alawi, who finished as runner-up in his Honda S2000, while Himmo came third 11.380s back to take his second podium of the day.

In the BMR 600, Al Muyini enjoyed a virtually perfect weekend. After topping the times in practice and securing pole position in qualifying, Al Muyini stormed to first place in the 11-lap opening sprint in 13:16.036. Al Muyini was 10.910s ahead of Nasser Al Khadra and 20.817s in front of Ebrahim Shareeda.

Race two was no different up front, with Al Muyini dominating for a winning time of 13:21.447. Al Khadra was again in second this time 7.563s behind. Adel Najjar claimed third place a distant 27.376s back.

In the BSSP 125, which is a category under the Bahrain Superbike Championship, Al Aswad won 1.006s ahead of Abdul Samee while Yusuf Qaed came third 3.614s adrift.

The winners were presented their trophies in a podium ceremony attended by high-ranking officials from BIC. The sixth round of National Race Day is scheduled to take place on March 16.

Esteban Chaves ( M i t c h e l t o n - S c o t t )

confirmed his first overall victory of the season after safely finishing in the front group on the final stage of the Herald Sun Tour.

The Colombian carried a 45 second advantage over his nearest rival Ruben Guerreiro (Trek-Segafredo) heading into the stage, with Chaves’ teammates Cameron Meyer and Damien Howson sitting between them in second and third respectively.

Mitchelton-Scott worked hard on the difficult circuits of the fourth stage, controlling

the initial breakaway of 14 riders to a maximum of 90 seconds advantage.

It was back together for the final lap, with Robert Power setting a gruelling pace on the climb that prevented any attacks that could threaten Chaves’ overall advantage and put a lot of riders in trouble, significantly reducing the front group.

A group of 17 made into the final bend towards the line, with Sam Crome (Bennelong SwissWellness) taking the biggest win of his career as he sprinted ahead of Cameron Meyer.

Chaves rolled in with

Howson further down in the group, safely collecting the overall title in the 65th edition of the Australian race.

“It’s a really nice feeling to win here in the home country of the team,” Chaves said on his victory. “We are really happy with the team, we rode really well.

“We raced this year different, every climb was full gas with the breakaway really close. It was intense but the team did very well so thanks very much to all of them. It is unbelievable to have one, two, three overall. I am really happy.” (Cyclingweekly)

Liverpool, Spurs

draw in wild finish

Anfield

Harry Kane’s 100th Premier League goal rescued a

point for Tottenham in a 2-2 draw at Liverpool with an added-time penalty after the striker had missed from the spot moments earlier.

In a dramatic finish the Premier League’s top scorer took his tally to 22 with virtually the last kick of the game after the visitors’ second controversially-awarded penalty in the final 10 minutes.

After Kane’s missed effort Liverpool thought they had snatched victory when Mohamed Salah scored an individually brilliant goal - his second of the game - with the clock well past 90 minutes only for Spurs’ England international to take his second chance.

In an enthralling game substitute Victor Wanyama had sparked the turnaround with a ferocious drive seconds after coming on.

It left the race for the top four exactly where it was with third-placed Liverpool two points ahead of their rivals, in fifth.

Salah became the fastest Liverpool player to 20 Premier League goals with his third-minute opener in only his 25th appearance but Kane stays one ahead thanks to the late drama.

It owed plenty to Eric Dier’s miscontrol which diverted the ball back between his two centre-backs where Salah was waiting to pounce, charging into the area to easily beat Hugo Lloris one-on-one.

It was his 27th of the season and in doing so became the third-fastest in the club’s history to score 20 top-flight goals.

The intensity with which they harried their opponents produced other chances with James Milner seeing a shot deflected wide by Davinson Sanchez, Roberto Firmino glancing a header wide and Van Dijk nodding into the arms of

Heung-min Song’s shot blocked by Van Dijk and a low Mousa Dembele strike comfortably saved by Loris Karius.

Liverpool goalkeeper Karius had to be alert to block Son as he broke clear on the left with Dele Alli firing wide the rebound but, despite their improvement, Tottenham’s desperation began to show with Kane flagged offside a couple of times and Alli booked for diving in the penalty area in the 69th minute.
