The Asian School chairman passes awayTDT | Manama

One of Bahrain’s leading edu-cators and chairman of The

Asian School Joseph Thomas passed away early yesterday morning due to cardiac arrest.

Thomas, who hails from the south Indian state of Kerala, began his career in education in 1970 when he joined as a kin-dergarten teacher in the state of Nagaland, India.

He then worked as a head-master at a government middle school in Nagaland. Later he joined as a lecturer of English at a college in Uttar Pradesh.

In 1982 he left for Bahrain along with his ambition to start

a school of his own where his vision in the field of education could be put into practice.

When he arrived in Bahrain, he saw the potential for this dream to materialise and found-ed The Asian School on May 11, 1983 with 65 children and three teachers. It was called The Asian Kindergarten then. It was renamed The Asian School the following year.

He has been running the school since then in the capaci-ty of principal and director until July 2009, when he moved to a pure management role.

Thomas was known to all as a dynamic personality who is a born educator and teaching has

always been his calling. He has relentlessly striven

through every adverse moment of his life for the cause of edu-cation. He was the guiding force behind the institution who be-lieves in hard work, sincerity, dedication and perseverance which has stood him in good stead and helped him achieve success in his life.

Thomas is survived by his wife Elizabeth Joseph, daugh-ter Lovy Joseph and son Tim-my Joseph, son-in-law Vinod, daughter in law Sarin and grand-daughter Isabel. He was 74. Funeral services will take place in Kerala and details will be announced later.

Truce calls mount as Israeli-Palestinian conflict worsensReuters | Gaza/Jerusalem

(Continuation from Page 1)

Hamas began firing rockets eight days ago in retal-

iation for what it said were Israeli rights abuses against Palestinians in Jerusalem.

Gaza medical officials say 213 Palestinians have been killed, including 61 children and 36 women, and more than 1,400 wounded. Israeli author-ities say 12 people have been killed in Israel, including two children.

Nearly 450 buildings in the Gaza strip have been destroyed or badly damaged, including six hospitals and nine primary care health centers, the United Nations humanitarian agen-cy said. Some 47,000 of the 52,000 displaced had fled to UN schools.

Israel said more than 3,450 rockets have been launched

at it from Gaza, some falling short and others shot down by its Iron Dome air defenses. The Israeli military said it had killed at least 130 militants in the Palestinian territory.

Yesterday, the army said a soldier was slightly injured when a shell was fired after it

allowed the fuel convoy into Gaza. It says its forces have killed around 130 Hamas fight-ers and another 30 from Islam-ic Jihad.

On a visit to Iceland, US Sec-retary of State Antony Blinken said Washington had received further information requested

from Israel about its destruc-tion of a Gaza high-rise that housed the local offices of the Associated Press and Al Ja-zeera news organisations.

Blinken gave no further de-tails about the information he said came through intelligence channels about Saturday’s at-

tack. Ron Dermer, a former Is-raeli ambassador to Washing-ton and now adviser to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said Hamas intelligence had been situated in the building, whose occupants were warned by Israel in advance to evacu-ate. Hamas were engaged in activity that would have under-mined Israel’s ability to target effectively and intercept in-coming rockets, Dermer told CNN.

Calling Netanyahu on Mon-day night, US President Joe Biden said Israel had the right to defend itself against indis-criminate rocket attacks but encouraged it to make every effort to protect civilians, the White House said.

Egypt and UN mediators also stepped up diplomatic efforts, and the UN General Assembly will meet to discuss the vio-lence tomorrow.

Wife seeks action against ‘absconding’ husbandIndian woman makes an appeal to help find her better half who has apparently been missing

• Case has been filed against him at Nabih Saleh Police Station

TDT | Manama

An appeal by an Indian woman has gone out to find her husband who

has apparently been missing in Bahrain for the last couple of days.

The 34-year-old who has been working as a nurse in the king-dom for almost 10 years has been having marital problems with Manish Keshavan since their marriage took place at their na-tive in Kerala last September.

According to the wife, the cou-ple met through an Indian mat-rimonial website almost a year ago in which he had advertised himself as a divorcee.

However, the 36-year-old has been accused of hiding the fact that he had not dissolved the marriage with his first wife.

“He pocketed more than Rs20,00,000 (BD10,400) in cash and 30 sovereigns of gold (worth nearly BD5,300) from me since our marriage,” she told the News of Bahrain, requesting anonymity.

“Before our marriage he convinced me and my parents that his parents were already dead and his only living relative was a sister working in the UK with whom he was not in good terms.

“He said he had divorced his first wife eight years ago and was in bad terms with all his relatives after a failed family business. He had also claimed to be a finan-cially well off businessman with a technical diploma.

“When we asked him for the certificate of divorce from his

first wife, he said he had lost it, including several other impor-tant documents in the Kerala floods a couple of years ago.

“He spoke very convincingly and his good behaviour gave us no reason for doubt.”

However all of this later turned out to be a farce, she said.

“A couple of months before our marriage I quit from my job in Bahrain since I wanted to live with my new husband in our native.

“But after our marriage in Sep-tember, he began demanding for money from my savings which I did not deny because he was now my husband.

“He then started getting impa-tient since I was not earning now and had become a housewife.

“It was on his insistence that I returned to Bahrain in Decem-ber to find a new job.”

By the end of March, Manish too joined his wife here and it was while looking for a job that he was forced to reveal that he was not as qualified as he had claimed to be.

This raised further doubts in his wife who found, on further investigation, that Manish was still married to his first wife.

According to her, his first wife is aware of this marriage and is party to Manish’s con of marry-ing gullible women to rob them of their savings.

Last week, Manish was con-fronted about all these allega-tions by the woman and her colleagues at their Mahooz flat.

Though Manish confessed to his offenses in a video clip and a hand-written letter, he then tried to kill himself by jump-ing out of their flat on the ninth floor, she said.

He was immediately rescued due to timely intervention and the witnesses’ presence of mind.

Jubilant Bahrainis make Saudi visitors feel at homePart of huge money

laundering schemeCentral Bank of Iran, 12 other banks abroad unlawfully transferred

$1.3 billion ‘dirty money’

• Public Prosecution probe uncovers more global crimes and violations

• Concealed source and movement of funds benefitting Iranian banks

• Circumvented international sanctions and restrictions on transactions

TDT | Manama

Officials of Future Bank in Bahrain and associat-ed Iranian banks abroad

have committed more unlawful banking practices.

The violations were uncov-ered by the Public Prosecution after conducting intensive in-vestigations into allegations the rouge officials engaged in money laundering from 2008 to 2012.

Attorney General Dr Ali bin Fadhel Al Buainain said that the Central Bank of Iran issued in-structions to Future Bank on the

use of an unapproved alterna-tive transfer system to complete banking operations with the aim of concealing the source and movement of funds, benefitting Iranian banks and circumvent-ing international sanctions and restrictions on transactions im-posed against Iranian entities.

Future Bank officials, in con-junction with other Iranian bank officials and the Central Bank of Iran, carried out send-ing and transferring operations. They received more than $1.3 billion via an alternative system.

Funds were transferred and received, kept as a discount, added to the account of Irani-an banks, settled in bank ac-counts, and had their source

concealed to enable those banks to complete unlawful transfers of funds, as part of a huge money laundering scheme.

Based on the weight of phys-ical evidence, the Public Pros-ecution has referred a number of accused for prosecution, in-cluding Future Bank, Bank Melli Iran, Bank Saderat Iran and oth-er Iranian banks, in addition to the Central Bank of Iran.

Investigations continue into other similar violations carried out through Future Bank and Iranian banks, with the aim of determining further criminal conduct, its temporal and spa-tial extent, and the deviations of funds that are the subject of those crimes. It is expected

that further suspects will be identified.

The Attorney General indicat-ed that the investigations into the violations of Future Bank, established in the Kingdom of Bahrain, were carried pursu-ant to reports of the Central Bank of Bahrain and violations it monitored through its audit processes.

The review of tens of thou-sands of documents in coop-eration with the Financial In-vestigation Directorate at the Ministry of Interior, the Cen-tral Bank of Bahrain, and inde-pendent international experts, confirmed that Future Bank and its controlling sharehold-ers were involved in systematic and widespread violations of Bahrain’s banking law.

Their aim was laundering money through a bank con-trolled by the National Bank of Iran (Melli) and Bank Saderat Iran, empowering Iranian en-tities, including those involved in financing terrorism or sub-ject to international sanctions designed to prevent them from carrying out international bank-ing transactions.

Money laundering is the illegal process of concealing the origins

of money obtained illegally by passing it through a complex

sequence of banking transfers or commercial transactions. The overall scheme of this process returns the “clean” money to

the launderer in an obscure and indirect way.

The contract for Falaj 3-class Offshore Patrol Vessels was the largest ever order received by ADSB, it said in a statement.

It did not say when it would start and complete delivery of the vessels.

“This contract under-scores our mutual commit-ment to serving the UAE Navy with the right prod-ucts and advanced shipping solutions - to enable a se-cure future,” ADSB Chief Ex-ecutive David Massey said.

ADSB has bui l t Bay-nunah-class corvettes for the UAE navy, the last of which it said was delivered in 2017.

ADSB is 40% owned by state defence conglomerate EDGE and 10% owned by the Abu Dhabi government, according to its website.

Invest in health or face credit ratings ‘stick’ -WHO’s expert panelBrussels

States that invest too little in public health could

have their credit ratings cut, according to the chair of a World Health Organiza-tion panel that wants a new global body set up to spell out the risks to financial stability from healthcare failures.

The comments by Mario Monti come before a global health summit on Friday in Rome at which leaders of the Group of 20 largest economies will discuss the coronavirus emergency and how to prevent major health crises in future.

“A pandemic like this one poses huge threats not just to financial stability but to the whole economic and fi-nancial system,” Monti told Reuters.

Joe Biden to pitch his $174 bIllion electric vehicle plan in Michigan• The centerpiece of Biden’s EV plan is $100 billion in consumer rebates

• Biden will argue that the United States is falling behind China on EVs

• Biden wants $15 billion to build 500,000 EV charging stations by 2030

Reuters

President Joe Biden will make the case for his $174 billion electric vehicle

plan on Tuesday, calling for gov-ernment grants for new battery production facilities during a visit to a Ford Motor electric vehicle plant in Michigan.

He will also rule out consumer incentives for high-priced elec-tric luxury models, according to a White House fact sheet re-viewed by Reuters, as he argues for dramatic government spend-ing to prod Americans to buy electric vehicles at a preview of Ford’s new EV F-150 pickup

truck.The White House wants to

encourage new battery produc-tion facilities, which are key to ramping up US electric vehicle manufacturing.

B i d e n ’s p l a n “ p ro p o s e s cost-sharing grants to support new high capacity battery facil-ities in the United States, rec-ognising that new businesses may not be able to access tax credits but can pitch in their fair share as they scale their opera-tions,” the previously unreport-ed White House fact sheet said.

It also backs grants to fund the retooling of shuttered factories “to build advanced vehicles and parts.”

The centerpiece of Biden’s EV plan is $100 billion in consumer

rebates, according to an April US Transportation Department email to lawmakers.

The White House fact sheet says Biden’s plan provides “point-of-sale incentives that encourage EV deployment. These incentives will not go to-wards expensive luxury models and will also incentivize man-ufacturers who use good labor practices.”

The existing $7,500 EV tax credit applies to vehicles regard-less of price but phases out after a manufacturer sells 200,000 EVs. Credits for both Tesla and General Motors expired after they hit the cap.

The White House has de-clined to say how Biden wants EV tax credits restructured or if

he wants to hike credits.Biden will argue that the Unit-

ed States is falling behind China on EVs. “Despite pioneering the technology, the United States is behind in the race to manu-facture these vehicles and the batteries that go in them,” the White House says.

Biden faces resistance from many congressional Republi-cans on his EV focus.

Biden backs new tax credits for zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, which the White House notes “are major contributors to poor air quality” and the administration pegs as costing $10 billion.

Biden wants $15 billion to build 500,000 EV charging sta-tions by 2030 -- including in apartment buildings and pub-lic parking -- and $45 billion to electrify a significant num-ber of school and transit buses. He also wants to fund shifting the federal fleet to more EVs, including for the Postal Ser-vice to begin using EV delivery trucks.

Lamborghini maps a cautious course toward electrificationReuters

Supercar brand Lamborghini plans to invest $1.5 billion to

produce an entirely gas-electric hybrid lineup by 2024, but its first fully electric model will not appear until the second half of the decade, the brand’s CEO said.

Lamborghini’s plan is to shift its current models - the Hura-can and Aventador sports cars and the Urus sport utility - to hybrid, gasoline-electric pow-ertrains by the end of 2024, the brand’s chief executive, Stephan Winkelmann, told reporters in a video briefing ahead of Tues-day’s announcement.

During the second half of the decade, Lamborghini plans a new, all-electric model which will likely have seating for four, Winkelmann said. The exact de-

sign of that model has not been decided, he said, but, “in terms of the design, the sexier car is a two-door car.”

That timetable would put

Lamborghini behind Ferrari, which has promised to have a battery-electric model by 2025.

Governments around the world have begun proposing

deadlines as early as 2030 for phasing out petroleum-fueled internal combustion vehicles in order to hit climate goals.

For makers of high-perfor-mance sports cars, abandoning internal combustion is both a technical and emotional chal-lenge. The roaring sound of a 12-cylinder engine is as core to the Lamborghini brand as the edgy, aggressive styling of its cars or its rampaging bull logo.

On a technical level, lithi-um-ion batteries cannot operate for long at top speed on a track.

“We have to define what sportiness is in the new era, in the battery electric era,” Win-kelmann said. “Range is the top priority. This is still something we have to work on.”

Google ties up with 30 publishers to start news platform in IndiaReuters

Alphabet Inc’s Google yester-day launched its Showcase

news platform in India with 30 domestic news publishers, at a time when the country is try-ing to weed out misinformation surrounding a ferocious second COVID-19 wave.

Indians have become increas-ingly reliant on social media platforms like Twitter, Face-book and Instagram for infor-mation related to the crisis amid a shortage of critical medical supplies.

Google will pay the partner-

ing publishers for their online content and allow them to cu-rate it, while allowing users lim-ited access to paywalled stories. It did not reveal further finan-cial details.

“Today ’s announcement

comes at a particularly chal-lenging moment in India, with Indians seeking out authorita-tive news and information as the COVID-19 crisis deepens,” Google said in a blog.

The world’s second most pop-ulous country is going through one of the deadliest outbreaks, with the total COVID-19 caseload crossing 25 million on Tuesday.

The Indian government has also been at odds with social media platform giants. Last month, it asked Twitter to take down dozens of tweets that were critical of its handling of the virus outbreak.

Google’s service was global-ly launched late last year and has been in use in more than 12 countries, including Germany, Brazil and the United Kingdom.

Content from Indian publish-er partners in English and Hindi will begin to appear in News Showcase panels in Google News and on Discover, Google said, adding it would launch additional Indic languages this year.

Google, led by Sundar Pichai, has promised $18 million in new funding for India, including advertising support for public health campaigns.

The White House wants to encourage new battery production facilities, which are key to ramping up US electric vehicle manufacturing.

News in brief u China is resisting bilateral talks with the United States on nuclear weapons, the US disarmament ambassador told a UN conference yesterday, as Washington seeks to advance efforts to reduce nuclear arms stockpiles. “Despite the PRC’s dramatic build-up of its nuclear arsenal, unfortunately it continues to resist discussing nuclear risk reduction bilaterally with the United States,” said Robert Wood, referring to the People’s Republic of China. “To date Beijing has not been willing to engage meaningfully or establish expert discussions similar to those we have with Russia. We sincerely hope that will change,” he added.

At least 24 people were dead and almost 100 missing yesterday after a monster

cyclone slammed India. The colossal swirling system

dubbed Cyclone Tauktae is the latest in what experts say is a growing number of increasing-ly severe storms in the Arabian Sea as climate change warms its waters.

Hundreds of thousands of people were left without power after the storm hit the Gujarat coast in western India on Monday evening, leaving a trail of death and destruction.

Winds up to 130 kilometres (80 miles) per hour smashed seafront windows and knocked over pow-er lines and thousands of trees, blocking roads leading to affected areas, officials said.

“I have never experienced such intensity in my life,” a hotel owner in the town of Bhavnagar said.

“It was pitch dark as power was

cut off and winds were making a roaring sound. It was scary.”

One support vessel serving oil rigs that were walloped by eight-metre waves off Mumbai sank and 96 of the 273 people who had been on board were missing, the Indian Navy said Tuesday.

The defence ministry said 177 people were rescued, with war-ships attempting to save the rest of the crew in “extremely chal-lenging sea conditions”.

Navy helicopters managed, however, to rescue all 137 peo-ple stuck on another barge that

also slipped its anchor and ran aground. One other barge and an oil rig were also adrift.

Elsewhere, four fresh casualties were reported including a child crushed by a collapsing wall and an 80-year-old woman killed by a falling pole, Gujarat state chief minister Vijay Rupani said.

He added that over 16,500 houses were damaged, 40,000 trees were uprooted and 2,400 villages were without power.

“Since the cyclone made land-fall we have not had power or communications,” local official

Aayush Oak told AFP by phone from the coastal district of Am-reli, where 40-50 mobile phone towers were damaged.

Although the cyclone was one of the fiercest in decades, better forecasting than in previous dis-asters meant that 200,000 people in danger zones were evacuated from their homes. “Our planning over the last three days has paid off. We have managed to minimise human casualties,” said Rupani.

But challenges remain.Forecasters warned of a tidal

wave of 1-2 metres (3-6 feet) in

some areas as the cyclone bar-relled inland, weakening slightly but still bringing heavy rains and gale-force winds.

Last May, more than 110 people died after “super cyclone” Am-phan ravaged eastern India and Bangladesh in the Bay of Bengal.

The Arabian Sea previously ex-perienced fewer severe cyclones than the Bay of Bengal but rising water temperatures because of global warming was changing that, Roxy Mathew Koll from the Indian Institute of Tropical Me-teorology said.

“(The) Arabian Sea is one of the fastest-warming basins across the global oceans,” he said.

The effects were felt far and wide with authorities in Nepal -- some 2,000 kilometres (1,200 miles) from Gujarat -- advising climbers on Everest and other mountains to stay put.

But more than 200 climbers ignored the warnings and were heading up the world’s highest mountain, eyeing the summit by the end of this week, a govern-ment official at the base camp said.

Surfer dies after shark attack

AFP News

A surfer has died after being bitten by a shark at a beach

north of Sydney, Australian au-thorities said yesterday.

Paramedics were called to Tuncurry Beach, about three hours’ drive from Australia’s most populous city following reports of the attack on Tues-day morning.

“Despite the best efforts of paramedics and bystanders at the scene, the man could not be resuscitated,” New South Wales Ambulance tweeted.

The man, believed to be in his 50s, went into cardiac ar-

rest after being bitten on his thigh, a spokesman told AFP. Police said he was surfing when the attack occurred.

The New South Wales state government’s SharkSmart organisation said beaches in the area had been closed until further notice following the incident.

It was the first fatal shark attack recorded in Australian waters this year, according to the Taronga Conservation So-ciety Australia.

There were 26 maulings in 2020, eight of them fatal, data from the government agency shows.

Burned down McLaren GT up for sale for $212,000

TDT | agencies

This probably is the cheap-est McLaren GT in the

world. And you will get it for

$212,000!, says Copart, a US-based used car marketplace.

But riding it back home is out of the question. That won’t happen.

On sale is the charred re-mains of a once rear-wheel-drive supercar powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine.

The car, not sure if it worth calling, is mildly recognisable as McLaren by the wheels, the rear diffuser, and the tailpipes.

Still, if you like to own it, be ready to shell out $212,000!

That is the asking price!Again, dead cars are not un-

common on the site. However, this car is a bit more charred than all others.

Sure, this is going to be a record of some sort.

The primary damage listed on the website is ‘burn’ while the secondary damage men-tioned is ‘all over.

Since the McLaren GT most-ly is a carbon fibre car, the remains look like chunks of melted and destroyed carbon.

No details are available about how the McLaren end-ed up in such a sorry state. It could have been in a crash that led to a fire. Chances are also that some issue inside it might have sparked its charring. It is also possible that the vehicle could have been in a house fire.

However, the damage is such that the wreckage can be dis-missed as waste and thrown away.

The 2021 McLaren GT sourc-es power from a four-litre V8 engine that produced 612 hp power at 7,500 rpm and 630 Nm of torque at 5,500 – 6,500 rpm. The engine gets a sev-en-speed automatic gearbox.

Notre-Dame’s square closed over lead pollution risksAFP News

The square in front of No-tre-Dame cathedral in Paris

has been closed to the public after tests again revealed high concen-trations of toxic lead particles, the Paris police department said yesterday.

The fire that ravaged the 13th-century monument two years ago melted some 300 tonnes of lead panelling in the roof, spewing the metal across large

swathes of the city.Exposure risks prompted au-

thorities to forbid access to sev-eral areas and even some schools during extensive clean-up oper-ations, with blood tests urged for children and pregnant women.

The square was reopened a few weeks after the fire, with officials promising regular testing of the site.

“Results from the most recent tests showed lead dust concen-trations higher than the normal

levels for Paris at certain points in the square,” the police depart-ment said in a statement.

It will reopen after a new clean-ing operation and “all readings are back to sufficiently low levels”, it said.

While the spire collapsed and much of the roof was destroyed on the evening of April 15, 2019, the efforts of firefighters ensured the great medieval edifice sur-vived the blaze.

But the lead risks delayed work

on clearing debris and launch-ing the restoration effort for the gothic landmark, which Presi-dent Emmanuel Macron wants open for visitors in time for Par-is’s hosting of the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Investigators have yet to deter-mine the cause of the blaze, but they have said an accident, pos-sibly caused by a short circuit or discarded cigarette butt, remains the most likely explanation.

UK ministers considering contingency plans for local lockdownsReuters

British ministers are con-sidering contingency

plans for local lockdowns or a delay to reopening af-ter June 21 in response to concern about the spread of the coronavirus variant first detected in India, The Times newspaper reported on Monday.

Officials have drawn up plans modelled on the Tier 4 restrictions introduced last year, the paper said. People would be advised to stay at home and non-essen-tial shops and hospitality would be closed if the var-iant was not brought under control, it added.

The newspaper said busi-nesses in areas subject to the restrictions would re-ceive grants of up to 18,000 pounds ($25,440) and the scheme would be adminis-tered by local authorities, with payments adjusted according to the length of restrictions.

Grants would be made available for the worst-af-fected sectors, such as nightclubs, and for “mass events” including festivals in another scenario being considered with a delay to reopening after June 21, the report said.

Spain deploys army in Ceuta to patrol border with Morocco after thousands break in

Spain has deployed troops to Ceuta to patrol the

border with Morocco af-ter thousands of migrants swam into the northern Af-rican enclave amid height-ened diplomatic tensions, Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said yes-terday.

Footage from local Faro TV channel showed soldiers in armoured vehicles guard-ing the enclave’s beach as dozens of migrants emerged from the water while hun-dreds of potential migrants stood on the Moroccan side of the fence between the enclave and Morocco.

Soldiers started patrolling the border along with Span-ish police, Grande-Marlaska told state broadcaster TVE. As many as 6,000 Moroc-cans, including about 1,500 minors, swam into Ceuta on Monday and Tuesday, he said.

Reuters

Emma Watson slams media amid Leo Robinton engagement rumorsFox | Los Angeles

Emma Watson is caution-ing her fans to take reports

regarding her engagement to boyfriend Leo Robinton with a pinch of salt and said specula-tion that her career is stagnant is purely meant to elicit “clicks.”

“Dear Fans, Rumours about whether I’m engaged or not, or whether my career is ‘dormant or not’ are ways to create clicks each time they are revealed to be true or untrue,” the “Harry Potter” actress, 31, tweet-ed on Monday af-ter Watson and Robinton were photographed during a rare sighting in Los Ange-les over the weekend.

“ I f I h a v e news - I p ro m i s e I’ll share it

with you,” she added in a fol-low-up tweet, adding in anoth-er, “In the mean time please assume no news from me just means I’m quietly spending the pandemic the way most people are - failing to make sourdough bread (!), caring for my loved ones and doing my best not to spread a virus that is still af-

fecting so many people.”

The “Little Women” star c o n c l u d e d in a separate scribe that she is “sending so much love” to her fans and

“hoping you’re ok and happy as you can be in these strange times,” before thank-ing “everyone

working so hard to keep us safe and well. E Xx.”

Watson and her entrepreneur beau

were spotted exiting a lo-cal store in Los Angeles over the weekend in just the pair’s second public sighting since they were first romantically linked in October 2019, according to People magazine.

James Corden on voice acting: Can turn up in pyjamas and not worry about being in shapeIANS | Los Angeles

Actor James Corden lends his voice to the titular

character of the new live ac-tion-CGI animated film “Peter Rabbit 2”, and he says an ad-vantage of doing a voiceover role is one doesn’t have to wor-ry about being in shape.

“It feels very freeing and also you don’t have to wor-ry about that curry you ate at the weekend where you might have put on four pounds and it’s showing on your face, it doesn’t matter. You can turn up in your pyjamas and it’s fine,” he said, ac-cording to a report in con-tactmusic.com.

“ Yo u ’ v e g o t countless times to do it and try i t . T h e h a rd -est thing when you’re filming anything, even us doing this now, is t ime. T i m e i s t h e greatest pres-

sure. I think I’ve record-ed ‘Peter Rabbit 2’ from start to finish, the whole movie, maybe eight to 10 times and in mo-

ments of that, doing 10 reads of in-dividual lines. Then it ’s up to (director) Will (Gluck) to pick how he wants the character to s o u n d a n d

feel,” Corden added.

Ariana Grande, fiancé Dalton Gomez marriedFox | Los Angeles

Ariana Grande and her fi-ancé of some six months, Dalton Gomez, have

tied the knot, Fox News has confirmed.

The recently engaged pair is said to have exchanged their nuptials at Grande’s home in Montecito, California, over the weekend in an intimate ceremony that included fewer than 20 guests from both sides of their respective families.

The singer, 27, took to Insta-gram in December to share a se-ries of photos of them together. The series also included some snaps of her brand new engage-ment ring from the 25-year-old real estate broker.

“forever n then some,” she captioned the post at the time.

Gomez, a Los Angeles real estate agent, was first linked to the celebrity around Valentine’s Day. TMZ reported in late

March that the duo had decided to quarantine together. After that, she made things offi-cial once they started to appear on her Instagram Stories to-gether. She confirmed they were dating by way of the music video “Stuck With U,” which dropped on May 8.

“They couldn’t be happier, they’re just so excited. This is a happy time for them, both sets of parents are thrilled,” a source

told People shortly after the star announced the news.

A source previously told the outlet that the duo first be-gan dating in January, meaning the engage-ment comes just shy of their one-year anni-versary.

Grande called it quits in October 2018 four months after they became engaged. The “SNL” star has since been l inked to Kaia Gerber and Kate B e c k i n s a l e , while Grande is now happily married.

“There were a lot of factors that af fected their breakup,” a source close to

Grande told Fox News in 2018 following their split. “Their en-

tire relationship happened in-credibly fast and many peo-

ple in Ariana’s own camp were caught off guard when they learned of her engagement to Pete.”

Hodgson to step down as Palace boss at end of season

AFP | London

Roy Hodgson is to step down as Crystal Palace manager

at the end of the season, the club announced yesterday.

The 73-year-old will bring the curtain down on his four-year spell at his boyhood club against one of his former sides, Liverpool, on Sunday.

The former England manag-er’s contract was due to expire in the close season after an-other campaign in which he maintained Palace’s Premier League status.

“After more than 45 years of coaching, I have decided that the time is right for me to step away from the rigours of top-flight Premier League football,” Hodgson said in a statement.

“So our final two matches will be my last ones as manager of Crystal Palace.

“It’s been a particularly re-warding period of my football life and career to have been able to spend these last four

seasons with Palace.”Former Chelsea manager

Frank Lampard has been men-tioned in the media as a poten-tial replacement for Hodgson at Palace.

Palace fans will recall Hodg-son’s first season in charge with particular affection.

He was appointed early in the 2017-18 campaign, Palace were pointless and had failed to score during their open-ing four league games after a disastrous start to life under Frank De Boer.

Former champion Wawrinka withdraws from French Open

AFP | Paris

Former champion Stan Wawrinka has pulled out

of the French Open after fail-ing to recover sufficiently from an operation he underwent on his left foot in March, his team told Reuters yesterday.

The 36-year-old Swiss, who won the claycourt Grand Slam at Roland Garros in 2015, has not played on the Tour since his opening round loss in March.

The three-times Grand Slam champion, a former world number three, then underwent a minor procedure on his left foot and at the time said he will be out for a few weeks.

“After having a small surgery on his foot in March, as much as we had hoped he’d be ready to play in Paris, he wasn’t able to come back to full fitness in time,” a spokeswoman for Wawrinka said in an emailed statement.

The world number 24 has been sharing videos and pho-tos on social media from his base in Monaco and had been a regular at the claycourt Grand Slam - which starts in Paris on May 30 - since playing for the first time in 2005.

“Stan is now working hard with his team for the grass court season and hopes to hit the ground running in June,” the spokeswoman added.

BRAVE CF 51: The Future is Here, the epic debut of the truly global MMA pro-

motion in Belarus, added a new bout to its fight card, only two weeks prior to the event. And who, besides Muhammad Mo-kaev, would be up to such task?.

The MMA sensation, and two-time IMMAF World Champion is heading to his sixth professional fight only ten months after mak-ing the transition from the ama-teur ranks. He will take on Geor-gia’s own Ibragim Navruzov on June 4th, at the Falcon Club, in Minsk, capital of Belarus.

Holding a perfect combined record of 28-0, Mokaev has been standing out from the pack since day one. In his last pro fight, “The Punisher”, as he’s also known as, dominated the for-mer amateur world champion Abdul Hussein at BRAVE CF 49: Superfights.

Across the cage, Mokaev

will have, once again, a worthy challenger. BRAVE CF newcomer Ibragim Navruzov is one of the most sought-after Eastern Eu-ropean talents and joined the

fastest-growing organization to pursue his dream of becoming a world champion.

Holding a professional re-cord of 5 wins and a single loss,

Navruzov had previously com-peted in the Russian and Euro-pean MMA circuits and is now finally ready to go big and make his international debut.

Due to the short time availa-ble for both athletes, who com-pete in the Flyweight division (up to 57kg), the bout will be a 59kg Catchweight, in order to preserve the integrity and health of the fighters and, in addition, ensuring the quality of the show for the fans watching.

BRAVE CF 51: The Future is Here takes place on June 4th, in Minsk, Balrus. The event will be head-lined by the Light-weight bout between the former world champion Lucas “Minei-ro” Martins and the upcoming German star Marcel Grabinski.

The four-member Philippine national taekwondo team

is eager to go out on the mat and fight in an ambitious bid to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.

Kirstie Elaine Alora, Paul-ine Lopez, Arven Alcantara and Kurt Bryan Barbosa are currently in Ammam, Jordan, for the 2021 Asian Taekwondo Olympic Qualification Tour-nament set for Friday and Sat-urday.

Only the finalists — gold and silver medalists — will advance to the Tokyo Games set from July 23 to August 8.

“At this stage, all four of them are physically, emotionally and mentally ready,’’ said national coach Carlos Padilla, who was with the four throughout bub-ble training at Inspire Academy in Calamba.

He expects his players to per-form well and earn their tickets to the Olympics.

“They focused on their train-ing — three times a day, six times a week — so I am really confident they will perform their very best,” he said.

“Right now, they are just waiting for their turns to go out there on the mat and fight.”

Since it became a medal sport in 2000 in Sydney, Filipino jins were present in every edition of the Summer Games, except in London 2012.

“I can feel that all the sac-rifices that our players have made will bear fruit. They are 101 percent focused on their objective,’’ said Padilla, a three-year national mentor.

Another coach, Dindo Sim-

pao, agreed: “They are very hungry to qualify for the Olym-pics and get an Olympic medal. There were limitations due to the pandemic, but the team is blessed with a good training camp.”

Alcantara will open the coun-try’s bid on Friday in the men’s -68 kilogram, a one-day surviv-al affair where the Southeast Asian Games silver medalist needs to at least make the finals to punch a ticket to Tokyo.

The 2016 Rio De Janeiro Olympian Alora – the most ex-perienced in the team – will next see action in the women’s +73kg on Saturday as well as Lopez, the 2016 Asian champi-on in the women’s -57kg cate-gory, and Barbosa in the men’s -58kg.

The team arrived in Amman on Friday and everyone, Padilla said, has adjusted to the five-hour time zone difference.

“This is the best preparation we ever have had, everything is right on track and no dis-tractions,” said Padilla. “And the jins are staying away from media interviews to keep their concentration.”

Save for a two-week en-hanced community quarantine where face-to-face contact was barred due to rising cases of COVID-19 last month, the four jins got the type of preparation they needed.

Kouame officially granted Filipino citizenshipTDT | Manila

Finally, Ivory Coast-born giant Angelo Kouame has

been granted Filipino citizen-ship making him eligible to play for the Philippine men’s nation-al basketball team.

President Rodrigo Duterte yesterday signed his naturali-zation into law, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas an-nounced.

“I’m super hyped right now. I’m screaming everywhere around the house right now. I’m proud, just proud to be a ka-babayan,” said Kouame, clearly elated with the news.

The Ateneo Blue Eagle star will now be compelled to pro-claim an Oath of Allegiance to the Republic of the Philippines administered by the Bureau of Immigration. He will after-wards apply for a Philippine passport, which could be ob-tained in days.

In a statement, SBP presi-dent Al S. Panlilio expressed its thanks to the president and other government officials that helped make it happen.

With this major develop-ment, the 6-foot-10 center moved closer to finally suit up for Philippine team better known as Gilas Pilipinas.

Once he gets clearance from FIBA, Kouame will see action for Gilas Pilipinas in next month’s FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers in Clark and the Olympic Qual-ifying Tournament in Serbia.

Panlilio, though, is confident that everything will be done well before the Philippines hosts the third leg of the FIBA Asia Cup.

“Koaume will now undergo

the final steps required by FIBA before a naturalized player can suit up for a country and we are confident that he’ll be able to play during our hosting of the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers and the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Serbia,” the SBP said in a statement.

He added that Kouame’s presence is vital not just for the immediate future but also for their buildup for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, which the country is co-hosting.

“It’s a great day for Philippine

basketball and we’re thankful for the full support of our bas-ketball community,” Panlilio said.

“Although Kouame’s pres-ence is crucial for these two tournaments, having him as an official member of the squad in the upcoming games is an early investment as we build towards the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.”

Kouame has been training with Gilas Pilipinas, which re-entered its bubble in Calam-ba, Laguna late last month.

The addition of Kouame in the lineup for the upcoming tournaments will be a big boost to the Philippine team, which will be made up of the cadets and the Gilas draftees.

Wunderkind Kai Sotto has also reaffirmed his commit-ment to play for Gilas, which plays rival South Korea twice and Indonesia in the Clark qualifiers.

Guardiola warns Aguero over Champions League final berth

AFP | London

Manchester City manag-er Pep Guardiola has

warned Sergio Aguero there will be no room for sentiment when he picks his team for the Champions League fi-nal against Chelsea later this month.

Aguero has announced he will leave City at the end of the season after 10 successful years with the Premier League champions.

The Argentina striker is City’s all-time record goalscor-er, but he may not have a fairy-tale farewell at the end of an injury-ravaged campaign in which he has been limited to just 18 appearances.

Aguero missed yesterday’s match at Brighton with an ad-ductor problem.

He could return for one last appearance at the Etihad Stadium against Everton on Sunday.

But Guardiola refused to give

any guarantees the 32-year-old will feature in City’s first Champions League final on May 29.

“I would say I would be cold,” Guardiola said of his attitude towards selection. “I have to take a decision which is the best to win that game, so I have to be.

“If Sergio is fit he is going to help us, that is for sure, if he is going to help us score goals he is going to play, but it’s the final of the Champi-ons League. I have to take the decision that gives us the best chance of winning that game.”

Al Hala clinch second division title

Abdulfatah Basheer Othman fires in a brace to help lift newly crowned champions past Al Khaldiya 2-1 on final match day of the season

• BFA president Shaikh Ali bin Khalifa Al Khalifa attends match, presents medals and champions’ shield in awarding ceremony

• Othman scores twice in five-minute span as all three of the match’s goals were scored in the first half

TDT | Manama

Al Hala were last night crowned champions of the 2020/2021 Bah-

rain Second Division Football League.

Abdulfatah Basheer Othman netted a brace for Hala to help them claim the coveted champi-onship in a 2-1 triumph over chief title-rivals Al Khaldiya in both teams’ last match of the season.

Othman scored both his goals within a five-minute span in the first half.

Hala and Khaldiya are now promoted to the Nasser bin Hamad Bahrain Premier League for next season. They finished as the top two teams on the second

division’s final standings.Following yesterday’s contest,

the newly crowned champions were presented their respective medals and the second division shield in an awarding ceremony attended by Bahrain Football As-sociation (BFA) president Shaikh Ali bin Khalifa Al Khalifa.

Other high-ranking BFA and club officials were also on hand.

Hala captain Ebrahim Abdul-la Alobaidli accepted the shield on the team’s behalf.

All three goals came in an ac-tion-packed first 45 minutes.

Othman opened Hala’s ac-count in the 19th minute fol-lowing a clever one-two with teammate Bruno Cesar Correa. Othman received the assist in perfect position in the penalty

box as he was unmarked and sent the ball into the net.

Othman then made it 2-0 in the 24th minute. He was on the receiving end of a short pass in the area from teammate Fais-

al Ebrahim Isa, giving him an easy opportunity to slot the ball home from close range past Khaldiya’s interntional goal-keeper Ebrahim Lutfallah.

Khaldiya were able to get a goal back right before half-time through Thiago Augusto Fer-nandes, who fired in a bicycle kick in the 36th minute in a bril-liant display of skill.

After the interval, neither team could add to their goal total despite each having their chances.

The result earned Hala their 13th win in 18 matches as they complete their second divi-sion campaign with 41 points. Khaldiya just missed out on the title by three points, having suf-fered their fourth loss.

Federer gets Serena’s vote in GOAT debateAFP | London

While fans and pundits continue to debate who

should be considered the great-est men’s tennis player of all time, 23-times Grand Slam win-ner Serena Williams says Roger Federer gets her vote.

Rafa Nadal picked up a re-cord-extending 13th French Open title in October to join Federer at the top of the list of men’s Grand Slam winners with 20 titles, while world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, the youngest of the ‘Big Three’ at 33, is on 18.

The 39-year-old Federer is this week playing only his sec-ond tournament since return-ing to the Tour in March after spending more than a year on the sidelines due to two knee operations.

“I think two words sum it up: Roger Federer,” Williams, who turns 40 in September, told re-porters at the Emilia-Romagna Open in Parma on Monday.

“He’s just a synopsis of great-ness and class and amazing and really changed the game. You see players playing like him, moving like him, doing his techniques. The guy is (a) genius.”

Williams won the last of her majors at the 2017 Australian Open before becoming a moth-er and has since been chasing a

24th major title to equal Mar-garet Court’s record.

On Monday, the American won her first match since losing in the Melbourne semi-finals in February and said she was a Federer “superfan”.

“I just feel like he is really the

greatest player,” Williams said.“You can’t not like the guy,

that’s how I feel. His game is so fantastic. If I could only play like him.”

Top seeded Federer began his campaign in Geneva yesterday against Spaniard Pablo Andujar, who said he has been looking forward to a match against the Swiss for a long time.

“It was something that I wanted, to have a match against Roger, just to tell my kids and my grandkids when I get older that I played him,” Andujar told reporters.

“I think when you play Rafa, Novak and Roger ... these guys became myths, (they are) some-thing above the sport. I would say that the most important is that they grew the sport.”

Arteta sad to see Luiz go as Arsenal exit confirmed

Reuters | London

Arsenal defender David Luiz will leave the club

when his contract expires next month, manager Mikel Arteta said yesterday as he paid trib-ute to the Brazil international.

The 34-year-old centre back, who joined the club from Chelsea in 2019, signed a sea-son-long extension last year and is among the club’s highest earners.

“We had very clear talks in the last few months,” Arteta told a news conference ahead of Arsenal’s visit to Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Wednesday. “He’s given his best. I tried to help him as much as I possibly could, and the club did as well.

“After some conversations, we decided it’s the best way to do it now.”

Luiz is currently out with a hamstring injury sustained against Newcastle United ear-lier this month. He has made 73 appearances in all compe-titions for the north London club.

“I had the privilege to work with him for 18 months,” Arte-ta added. “I have really enjoyed learning from him. He’s been very helpful every time with the team, and I feel sadness as well because you get attached to the players emotionally.

“He is a player that has won everything in football and has earned every right to do so be-cause of who he is as a player and as a person.

“I just (want to) say thank you to him and wish him the best of luck in his next chapter because I am sure, knowing David, that he will have many more to come as a player.”
