Qataris ‘lapsing into silence’Muharraq rejects Al Jazeera’s blatant lies and deliberate misinformation broadcast

• Governor slams channel’s unfounded allegations and for spreading GCC discord

• Muharraq people linked to Qataris through kinship, lineage and blood relations

TDT | Manama

Muharraq Governor Sal-man bin Isa Bin Hindi Al Mannai said that

the towns and villages of Mu-harraq have denounced the bla-tant lies and deliberate misin-formation broadcast by Qatar’s Al Jazeera Channel about the Muharraq Governorate Police Directorate.

The unfounded allegations are an affront mainly to the hon-ourable people of Qatar who are linked to the people of Muhar-raq through kinship, lineage and blood relations, the governor said.

He pointed out that the Mu-harraq people have reproached the people of Qatar for lapsing into silence over the misinfor-mation, depravity and constant incitement used by the channel to spread discord among peo-ples.

“The people of Muharraq have stressed that Al Jazeera channel has, since its inception, caused divisions and rifts be-tween the people of Qatar and all the peoples of the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC). It has also targeted the bonds of love, affection, kinship and blood be-tween the people of Bahrain, es-pecially the people of Muharraq, and their brothers in Qatar,” the governor said.

“However, the people of Mu-harraq will not remain passive regarding any offense against Bahrain, or its leadership or people.”

The governor praised the role and performances of the Muharraq Police Directorate and its implementation of many successful programmes and ex-periences in the field of police work and its connection to so-cial services.

The community partnership

policy pursued by the Ministry of Interior has become a scien-tific reference and an advanced civilised approach that have at-tracted the world’s attention, he added.

The governor conveyed the resentment of all the people of Muharraq about the reticence and taciturnity of their relatives in Qatar about the misleading channel’s violations.

He pointed out that Qataris have always been welcomed in Muharraq where people expressed their appreciation and offered gracious hospitali-ty in their homes, markets and among their families.

Since the early times and un-til the present, Muharraq has welcomed the people of Qatar who opted to settle in the city that has always been open to all the people of the Arabian Gulf and has never hesitated

to share with them everything, including its pearls lying on sea beds, he said.

The governor added that the people of Muharraq have re-jected the lies of Al Jazeera and have asked the people of Qatar to snub the channel that has been targeting the deep-root-ed relations between the two brotherly peoples.

The governor said that it was his moral duty to take the state-ment of the people of Muharraq to the world in general and to the people of Qatar in particular.

In their statement, the peo-ple said that Muharraq which has been fondly called by HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa the “Mother of All Cities”, the “School of Patriotism” and the “Apple of HM the King’s Eye” will never tolerate any fabrica-tions disseminated by the mis-leading Al Jazeera channel.

The governor also expressed his pride in the thanks and ap-preciation by His Royal High-ness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, during the Cabinet session yesterday, to the people of Muharraq whose spirit of patriotism has spread to the other towns and villages of Bahrain.

The governor praised the Cabinet’s rejection of any neg-ative actions against Bahrainis and stressed that the violations are unacceptable and that the necessary measures will be taken to protect the rights of citizens.

The governor also expressed sincere thanks and appreciation to Interior Minister General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa for the ministry’s efforts and the valiance of its staff in maintaining safety and security.

House to vote on draft law that gives women two-month ‘stillbirth’ paid leaveTDT | Manama

The House of Representa-tives will vote in its session

today on a draft law granting women working in the private sector who suffer stillbirth a paid leave, equivalent to the 60-day maternity leave, in the event that the pregnancy ex-ceeds 24 weeks.

The government, however, warned that the law is not con-ducive to the integration of women in the labour market, and it also indicated that it is

inconsistent with what inter-national and Arab conventions and comparative legislation have settled on regarding childbirth permits.

On the other hand, the Bah-rain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) called for the rejection of the law, saying that it would constitute a bur-den on business owners and expose them to heavy material losses, as well as lead to the re-luctance of business owners to employ women in the private sector.

Mandatory medical exam for workers in public health

It will be implemented every two years starting in January next year

• Move is aimed at ensuring workers are free from any communicable diseases

TDT | Manama

Medical examination will be mandatory every two years for

workers in industrial and com-mercial establishments related to public health.

Health Ministry officials said the move is aimed at ensuring workers are free from any com-municable diseases. It will be implemented in early January of next year.

In particular, it will cover bar-bershops and massage parlours. Also included are those work-ing in food manufacturing and packaging, food establishments, cosmetic institutions, health clubs, resorts and hotels.

Dr Mariam Al Hajri, assistant undersecretary for public health at the Ministry, stressed the im-portance of everyone coming together to promote health and safety, and limit the spread of infectious diseases in the King-dom.

The decision is in compliance with Ministerial Resolution No. (15) regarding the organisation of periodic medical examina-tion for workers in industrial and commercial establishments related to public health, which stipulates the employer’s com-mitment to sign periodic med-ical examination for workers every two years to ensure that they are free from communica-ble diseases.

It is also in compliance with Ministerial Resolution No. (14) for the year 2020 regarding the identification of commercial and industrial establishments related to public health and the professions in which they are practised, issued by the Minis-ter of Health.

Dr Al Hajri said that accord-

ing to Decision No. (14) of 2020, the worker is granted a certifi-cate from the relevant adminis-trative authority proving that he is free of communicable diseas-es, after conducting a periodic medical examination on him and paying the prescribed fees.

It is also not permissible for the worker, according to the decision issued, to continue to work if the certificate has ex-pired, unless a new certificate is obtained.

Dr Zakaria Ahmed Al Kha-ja, executive vice president for e-transformation at the Infor-mation and eGovernment Au-thority, affirmed that the au-thority has worked to develop the electronic system that sup-

ports the efforts of the Health Ministry to preserve public health through mandatory pe-riodic examination of workers in industrial and commercial establishments related to public health, available through the national e-government portal.

It is in line with its commit-ment to strengthening cooper-ation and coordination with the Health Ministry and the compe-tent authorities.

He also explained that the authority has developed a set of electronic services related to the periodic examination of profes-sions related to public health.

The concerned electronic service has able to determine the nature of the professions to which the decision applies and to specify additional med-ical examinations, according to the nature of the profession, through the integration and linking of data with the relevant authorities.

The electronic service has also been developed and the name of the service has been modified on the National eGov-ernment Portal site, to be under the name “The Appointment of the Periodic Medical Exam-ination.”

TDT | Manama

A report by the Bahrain Center for Strategic, In-

ternational and Energy Stud-ies (Derasat) and the United Nations Development Pro-gramme (UNDP) calls upon the private sector to plan and implement effective digital transformation strategies.

The report also called for allocating resources for cy-bersecurity, comprehensive post-pandemic planning, pri-oritising climate-change risks, and green-growth strategies that counterbalance these risks.

Derasat Center and UNDP Bahrain held a meeting that discussed the Kingdom’s most prominent private sector or-ganisations as part of a wider partnership to conduct a COV-ID-19 Socio-Economic Impact

Assessment study, in early No-vember.

The report recommended enhancing business sustain-ability by balancing lowered operating costs and improved productivity, as well as adopt-ing Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) criteria for risk mitigation, in a framework that embeds these values for sustainability at the core of the organisations.

The report also called for a strategic plan to emphasise on consumption in favor of manufacturing, with a larger role assigned to small and me-dium enterprises (SMEs) in the emerging economy.

Al Baraka Banking Group (ABG), the leading global

The opening session of the fo-rum was chaired by Adnan Ahmed Yousif, President and Chief Exec-utive of Al Baraka Banking Group, and was attended by each of the executive departments of the Group and the CEO of Al Baraka Islamic Bank Bahrain, Hamad Al-Oqab, in addition to the heads of the internal Shari’a audit de-partments.

The meeting discussed a

number of issues that touch the Shari’a aspect of implement-ing financing operations, ways to ensure the highest levels of Shari’a compliance, and the role of information technol-ogy in strengthening Shari’a control.

In addition, the meeting dis-cussed the most prominent chal-lenges facing the Group’s units, and those they faced at the begin-ning of the Corona pandemic, and the extent of the Shari’a supervi-sory bodies’ response to address these Shari’a risks.

In his opening speech at the forum, Adnan Ahmed Yousif af-firmed that these meetings come within the strategic vision of Al Baraka Banking Group in pro-moting and strengthening Shari’a compliance frameworks, starting

with the formation of bodies and then establishing Shari’a control and audit bodies while main-taining the highest professional standards.

Yousif also added, “Perhaps a keen observer of the Group’s march from its establishment to the present day, will notice that, thanks to God, it has achieved many of its goals and objectives, more specifically in terms of Shari’a compliance. This is ev-idenced by the internal Shari’a audit reports that we received periodically, as they have been not only continuously reflecting steady improvement but also tan-gible progress in the work of our Shari’a system, which resulted in praise and obtaining the high-est Shari’a classification for our actions.”

Taste from food truck

DR. JEENA AND MUTHADAL

Street food is one of the unique concept that is getting popularized in many cities and countries Historically the concept of food truck had existed

for more than 100 years in many parts of the world but the more emphasize on this business could be seen in past few years. The idea to kick start this business may be due to the low capital or the dream to be self- employed. According to trillist.com (2015) 16 places are listed as the best street food cities. Comparing to restaurants, food prices are easily affordable which could be one reason to attract the customers to the truck.

The very instant of hearing about street food, tasty dishes photographs through our minds. Walking through Isa Town, Busaiteen and many small cor-nered places of Bahrain not only give us a glance of food trucks but also the owner’s creativity to publi-cize the concept of street food in this small Island. Sliced potatoes, grilled meats, Crispy chips mixed chickpeas, sweet lemon juice can be easily consumed at the parking spot or carry home. Though these foods could be on the debate list of “nutritious” the owners of each truck are cautious on the ingredients consumed by the customers. A busy customer can drive through the lighted truck and wait patiently for the minimum of 10 minutes to get the orders done. As the owner of one food truck said, “tasty food need time to be cooked with care, love and design to delight the minds”.

However, it’s a real wonder to witness, a growing number young professional graduated such as me-chanical engineering or bachelor degrees holders are glad to invest in this street business. Depending on the size, number, design of the truck each investor has self-financed from a minimum of BD 4000. Today, there are more than 200 trucks on the road in serv-ing colorful burgers and decorative fries. The mere mention of street food could rumble with thoughts of taste, quality, price, hygiene and even question the health benefits. Let’s be honest, food truck foods are really tasty.

When there was temporary stop of restaurant dine in services due to Covid 19, this has partially favored the food trucks business and the customer surviving on quick foods. In 2019, there was strict regulation implemented on the truck operations considering the occupying of the places and disposing of the materials. Each of the trucks had their own disposing baggage’s and the food was cooked in presence of the customers. In certain situation, the ladies and kids were more attracted to the colorful truck and green ambiances which nailed them to spend time through selfies , munch and chat.

As per the 2018 Indian express four mechanical engineering student came with a prototype tool to solve the problems of cultivators because the food is a basic need to survival. In 2016, Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII) sanctioned funds for post graduate students to start up food truck business It could be assumed that future sustainability is a bigger challenge around the world, especially this pandemic strike.

Experiencing tasty tea of the truck that was parked in Busaiteen was a real marvel. The owner had a welcoming approach to his circular truck with his smile and greetings. Serving an Arabic tea with co webbed Arab – English conversation has rifted the tardiness from our minds and ended the day with happiness. Tasty hot food and the friendly atmos-phere is pushing me to visit the truck again for the weekend.

Sydney told to watch its famous New Year’s Eve fireworks from homeReuters | Sydney

Sydney, one of the world’s first major cities to welcome each

New Year with a public count-down featuring a fireworks dis-play over its well-known Opera House, has banned large gather-ings that night amid an outbreak of the coronavirus.

A mid-December resurgence of COVID-19 in the city’s north-ern beach suburbs has grown to 125 cases after five new infec-tions were recorded yesterday. About a quarter of million of people there must stay in strict lockdown until Jan. 9

That has led to further restric-tions of the already toned-down plans for the New Year’s Eve. New South Wales (NSW) Pre-mier Gladys Berejiklian banned most people from coming to Sydney’s downtown that night

and limited outdoor gatherings to 50 people.

“We don’t want to create any super-spreading events on New Year’s Eve, which then ruins it for everybody across the state moving forward,” Berejiklian

said at a news conference, add-ing that watching the fireworks from home was the ‘safest’ way to do so.

“On New Year’s Eve we don’t want any crowds on the fore-shore around Sydney whatso-

ever,” she said.Only residents with permits

for hospitality venues down-town will be allowed there on New Year’s Eve. Households across Sydney are only allowed to host 10 people until further notice.

NSW Police have issued 15 notices in Sydney for break-ing public health orders since

Christmas Eve.“I would say to those people

half contemplating doing an-ything stupid in the next few days, forget it,” NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard said.

Australia’s health minister, Greg Hunt, backed the Sydney restrictions.

“What we have been doing is working,” he said.

Because of swift border clo-sures, lockdowns, widespread testing, social distancing and a high rate of public compli-ance with anti-virus measures, Australia has recorded just over 28,300 infections and 908 deaths related to the coronavirus.

Officials say this has given regulators time to evaluate vac-cines without the pressure of mounting cases of COVID-19, as has been the case in much of Europe and the United States.

EU’s marathon vaccination drive off to uneven startEU expects to complete distribution of 200 mln doses of Pfizer shot by September

• German officials dump doses that weren’t kept cold enough

• Holdup reported in Spain

Reuters | Washington

The EU campaign to vacci-nate Europeans against COVID-19 has got off to

an uneven start in what will be a marathon effort to administer shots to enough of the bloc’s 450 million people to defeat the viral pandemic.

The vaccination drive kicked off at the weekend, with health workers and residents of care homes across the bloc among the first to get the Pfizer and BioNTech shots, which must be kept at ultra-cold temperatures.

There were initial hiccups: officials in southern Germany said yesterday they would dump around 1,000 doses after find-ing they had not been properly chilled. Temperature controls also caused a delivery delay in Spain.

In Italy, meanwhile, some pol-iticians complained that Ger-many - the EU’s largest member

state and home to BioNTech - may be getting more than its fair share of shots.

The teething troubles are an early test of the EU’s decision to procure vaccines jointly, which has left the bloc lagging the United States, Britain, Israel and Switzerland in approving and administering the first vaccines.

The EU is due to receive its first 12.5 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine by New Year’s Day, with distribution of 200 million doses across its 27 mem-ber countries to be completed by next September. The vaccine course requires two doses.

Talks are under way to agree on the delivery of an optional further 100 million doses under

the contract sealed with the two companies, the EU says.

The EU has sealed agreements with other drugmakers besides Pfizer, including Moderna and AstraZeneca, for more than two billion doses in total. It wants to inoculate all adults by the end of next year.

Keeping coolAs well as being the first COV-

ID-19 vaccine to be delivered across the EU, the Pfizer shot is also particularly tricky to handle. For long-term storage it needs to be deep frozen at around minus 70 Celsius (mi-nus 94 Fahrenheit). It can be defrosted for a few days before being used, but even then must

be kept chilled. In southern Germany, offi-

cials said they would not use some shots after temperature trackers showed they may not have been kept cold enough.

“There were doubts as to whether the cold chain was maintained at all times,” said Christian Meissner, district administrator in the Bavarian town of Lichtenfels. “BioNTech said that the vaccine was prob-ably okay, but ‘probably okay’ is not enough,” he told Reuters TV.

In Spain, the delivery of a new batch from Pfizer was held up by a day to Tuesday due to an issue with temperature controls that has now been resolved, Health Minister Salvador Illa said.

Webb, a Florida resident and an active member of the U.S. military, faces three murder charges and three attempted murder charges.

Authorities declined to comment on a motive but believe the incident was a “completely random act.”

News in brief u The ten costliest weather disasters worldwide this year saw insured

damages worth $150 billion, topping the figure for 2019 and reflecting a long-term impact of global warming, according to a report. The same disasters claimed at least 3,500 lives and displaced more than 13.5 million people. Not surprisingly, the burden fell disproportionately on poor nations, according to the annual tally from global NGO Christian Aid, entitled “Count the cost of 2020: a year of climate breakdown”

u A moderate earthquake hit central Croatia near its capital of Zagreb, triggering panic and damaging some buildings in towns south of the city. There were no immediate reports of injuries. Croatia’s seismologists said the magnitude of the quake that struck around 6:30 a.m. (0530 GMT) was 5.0, with the epicenter near the towns of Petrinja and Sisak 50 kilometres (30 miles) south of the capital. Several smaller tremors were felt after the initial one.

u An earthquake of magnitude 6.8

struck off the coast of south-central Chile, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said, but Chilean officials immediately discarded the risk of a tsunami. There were no initial reports of damage immediately following the quake. The strong tremor took place at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles), EMSC said, and about 163 km (100 miles) west-northwest of Valdivia in the Pacific Ocean.

u Bangladesh started moving a second group of Rohingya refugees to a controversial flood-prone island in the Bay of Bengal despite opposition from rights activists. More than 1,600 of the Muslim minority from Myanmar were taken to Bhashan Char earlier this month, and Foreign Minister A.K. Abdul Momen said just under 1,000 were in the latest batch heading for what he called a “beautiful resort”.

India tests vaccine delivery systems ahead of emergency approvalReuters | New Delhi

Some Indian states yesterday began a trial run of COVID-19

vaccine delivery systems, with health authorities checking everything from their technolo-gy platforms to the storage infra-structure that will be required to inoculate millions.

India wants to deliver 600 million coronavirus shots in the next six to eight months starting in January, with emergency use approval for the Oxford/Astra-Zeneca vaccine expected within days.

The country’s drug regulator is also considering similar approvals for the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine

and another developed by India’s Bharat Biotech.

After property scandal, Pope tightens money controlsReuters | Vatican City

Pope Francis has issued a new decree making charity funds

more transparent and tighten-ing controls on Vatican finances after a scandal over a luxury London property deal.

The main target is the Sec-retariat of State, the most im-portant part of the Vatican administration, which must relinquish management of its

funds, investments and real estate and submit to supervi-sion by two other economic

offices.Published yesterday and

signed by the pope on Dec. 26, the decree takes effect over two months from Jan. 1.

In 2014, the Secretariat in-vested about 200 million euros ($244 million) as a partner in a deal to buy a luxury building in London. As the deal became on-erous, it paid tens of millions of fees to middlemen in attempts to change the terms.

Cardinal George Pell, the Vatican’s former treasurer, told Reuters earlier this month there had been “enormous losses”. In September, the pope fired Car-dinal Angelo Becciu, a former top Secretariat official.

An investigation into the Lon-don deal led to the suspension last year of five Vatican employ-ees, four from the Secretariat. The Vatican has also accused the middlemen of extortion.

Investigators name Nashville bomber, say he died in blastSuspect identified after forensic experts matched DNA samples recovered from the scene

• Officials said it was too early in the investigation to discuss the suspect’s motives

AFP | Nashville

The man suspected of set-ting off a bomb in Nash-ville that ripped through

the southern US city’s downtown on Christmas morning was named by authorities on Sunday as they confirmed he died in the blast.

“We’ve come to the conclusion that an individual named Antho-ny Warner is the bomber, he was present when the bomb went off, and that he perished in the bombing,” federal prosecutor Don Cochran told a press conference.

The special agent in charge of the FBI’s Memphis field office, Doug Korneski, said that there was “no indication that any other persons were involved,” although he added they were still following leads.

Authorities at the press confer-ence said that with the investiga-tion ongoing they could not give details on any motive, but said

Warner had not been on their radar prior to the blast.

Police had reportedly identi-fied Warner, 63, on Saturday as a “person of interest” in connection with the explosion, which came from a parked motorhome that blared a warning minutes before it blew up.

They had searched a house in Antioch, a neighborhood in the Nashville area, but declined to confirm at the time if they had a suspect.

Friday’s explosion in historic downtown Nashville, the Unit-ed States’ country music capital, damaged about 40 buildings and

injured at least three people, with the streets largely abandoned at the early hour.

Authorities found human tissue at the blast site, which Tennessee Bureau of Investigations chief David Roush confirmed at the press conference was a match to DNA found in a vehicle Warner had used.

Police said at the time of the blast that it was an “intentional act” but the motive remained un-clear, and FBI behavioral analysts were involved in the investigation.

Tennessee senator Marsha Blackburn on Twitter praised the law enforcement officers who

responded to and are investigat-ing the bomb, and said she had asked President Donald Trump to grant Nashville a federal disaster declaration, a technical move that triggers federal assistance in re-pairing damage and providing aid.

According to a timeline provid-ed by the authorities, police were called to the area to respond to gunfire at 5:30 am, and officers spotted the motorhome at 6:00 am.

17 fishermen feared dead after boat sinks in Arctic RussiaAFP | Moscow

Seventeen fishermen were miss-ing and feared dead yester-

day after a Russian boat capsized during a storm and sank in the freezing waters of the Barents Sea.

Officials said that two people had been rescued during a search-and-rescue operation, but that bad weather conditions had com-plicated efforts to find survivors.

The privately-owned boat, called Onega, sank near the No-vaya Zemlya archipelago in the Barents Sea, with authorities be-coming aware of the accident at 7.30 am (0430 GMT), officials said.

“As a result of the accident, 19 people ended up in the water,” said the Investigative Commit-tee, which probes serious crimes, adding two people were rescued.

A source told the Interfax news agency that there was little hope of finding survivors due to strong winds and low temperatures.

“During the sinking, tempera-tures were as low as 30 degrees

(Celsius) below zero,” the source was quoted as saying.

“It’s practically impossible to hold out even with wet suits on.”

Officials believe that ice had built up on the Russian-flagged vessel, which had been operating since 1979.

“The disaster struck during a strong storm when the crew was hauling out a net with the catch,” the source said.

South Korean officials are vowing to speed up

efforts to launch a public coronavirus vaccination programme as the country yesterday announced it had detected its first cases of the virus variant linked to the rapid rise in infections in Britain.

The new variant, thought to be more transmissible than others currently cir-culating, was found in three people who had entered South Korea from London on Dec. 22, the Korea Dis-ease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) said yester-day.

Overall the KDCA re-ported 808 new cases as of midnight Sunday, the lowest since a record 1,241 infections were logged on Friday.

an uneven start in what will be a marathon effort to administer shots to enough of the bloc’s 450 million people to defeat the viral pandemic.

Suspect charged in Illinois bowling alley shooting

AFP | Washington

Authorities have charged a 37-year-old active

military member in connec-tion with a deadly shooting at an Illinois bowling alley a day after Christmas.

Police on Sunday said a man identified as Duke Webb opened fire at Don Carter Lanes in Rockford, Illinois late on Saturday night, killing three people and injuring three more.

Webb, a Florida resident and an active member of the U.S. military, faces three murder charges and three attempted murder charges.

Authorities declined to comment on a motive but believe the incident was a “completely random act.”

A shots fired call was placed to 911 shortly before 7 p.m. local time, and of-ficers were able to appre-hend the suspect several minutes after they arrived at the location, without fir-ing their weapons.

Abdul Momen said just under 1,000 were in the latest batch heading for what he called a “beautiful resort”.

u Britain will ban “buy one get one free”

promotions for food high in fat, sugar or salt and free refills of sugary soft drinks in restaurants from April 2022, the government said, its latest step in its plan to tackle obesity and improve public health. The government says obesity is one of Britain’s biggest long-term public health problems with almost two-thirds of adults in England overweight and one in three children leaving primary school overweight or obese.

“The exercise is basical-ly a mock drill for our health-care workers on how to run the whole vaccination process and system,” Jaiprakash Shivaha-re, the commissioner for health in the western state of Gujarat, said.

S Korea to accelerate virus vaccine efforts as first UK variant detectedReuters | Seoul

Overall the KDCA re-ported 808 new cases as of midnight Sunday, the lowest since a record 1,241 infections were logged on Friday.

ego Diana Prince in a third instalment of the superhit superhero franchise, with Patty Jenkins returning to direct.

“Wonder Woman 3” will con-clude the superhero trilogy that started with the 2017 release “Wonder Woman”. Warner Bros. has fast-tracked produc-tion of a third film in the DC Comics franchise, reports varie-ty.com, adding that Jenkins will write the final part of the trilogy

Billie Lourd remembers late mom Carrie Fisher Bang Showbiz | Los Angeles

Billie Lourd is sending “love and strength” to those who

have loved a lost one as she remembered her late mother

Carrie Fisher on the fourth anniversary of her death.

The ‘American Hor-ror Story’ actress re-membered the ‘Star Wars’ legend on Sun-day (27.12.2020), four years after she tragi-cally passed away fol-lowing a heart attack.

Sharing an old pic-ture of her and her mom, she captioned the sweet photo-graph: “Sending my love and strength to everyone out there that’s missing a loved one they’ve lost.

“ E s p e c i a l l y t h o s e

of you who have lost some-one during this crazy year. You’re not alone.”

Back in 2017, Billie admitted the death of her mother and her grandmother Debbie Reynolds, who passed away just a day after Carrie tragically died, “impossible to deal with”.

S h e s a i d : “Yeah, it’s com-pletely surre-al. There’s no way to really explain it. It’s so hard to talk about. I don’t know, if I say that I’m doing good, I’m too happy.

“And if I say that I’m n o t d o i n g

good, then I’m a mess. So it’s really hard to know what to say

about it because it is just so surreal and impossible to deal with.”

A t t h e t i m e o f C a r r i e a n d D e b -bie’s passing, Billie thanked fans for their support.

She wrote: “Re-ceiving all of your prayers and kind words over the past week has given me strength during a time I thought strength could not exist.

“There are no words to express how much I will miss my Abadaba and my one and only Momby. Your love and support means the world to

me. (sic)”

Rita Ora ‘hopes and prays’ the public accepts her apologyBang Showbiz | Los Angeles

Rita Ora hopes the public accepts her apology for breaking coro-

navirus rules. The 30-year-old pop star recently

offered an apology after breaching the UK government’s coronavirus regulations, and Rita has now re-vealed she hopes to “make it up to the public” who have given her “so much support over the years”.

She told The Sun on Sunday newspaper: “My apology was so sincere, and so from my heart.

“I can only hope and pray that everyone sees that, and accepts that.”

Rita breached the government rules last month when she hosted a lavish birthday party in London.

The ‘Hot Right Now’ hitmaker - who breached the rules for a second time after returning home from a trip to Egypt - subsequently issued an apology via social media and volunteered to pay the maximum £10,000 fine for breaking the reg-ulations.

Rita wrote on Instagram: “Hello all, I attended a small gathering with some friends to celebrate my 30th birthday.

“It was a spur of the moment de-cision made with the misguided view that we were coming out of lockdown and this would be OK...

“I’m deeply sorry for breaking the rules and in turn understand that this puts people at risk. This was a serious and inexcusable error of judgement. Given the restrictions, I realise how irresponsible these actions were and I take full respon-sibility.”

Rita also acknowledged the “sac-r i f ices” people have been mak-ing during the pandemic.

She said: “I feel par-t i c u l a r l y embarrassed knowing first-h a n d h o w hard people have worked to combat this terrible illness and being fully aware of the s a c r i f i c e s people and b u s i n e s s e s have made to help keep us all safe. Even t h o u g h t h i s won’t make it right, I want to sincerely apol-ogise.”

Tom Hanks: Theatres will survive Covid-19IANS | Los Angeles

Hollywood star Tom Hanks feels the shift to streaming

world is a due change, and says that movie theatres will survive the Covid-19 pandemic.

In an interview with Collider, Hanks opened up about the impact of the pandemic on the business, and the shift of many films to re-lease on streaming services, reports variety.com.

“A sea change was due, anyway. It was coming, “Hanks said, sharing that the streaming platforms have

allowed viewers to watch movies from their homes.

“Will movie theatres still exist? Absolutely, they will. In some ways, I think the ex-hibitors -- once they’re up and open -- are going to have the free-dom of choice of what movies they’re going to play,” Hanks shared.

Hanks believes theatres will remain to be the go-to release option for big budget franchises.

He said: “Big event mo-tion pictures are going to

rule the day at the cinemas. ‘News of the World’ might be the last adult movie about peo-

ple saying interest-ing things that’s going to play on a big screen some-

where, because after this, in order to guar-a n t e e t h a t

people show up again, we’re go-ing to have the Mar-vel Universe and all sorts of franchises.”

Dwayne Johnson shares experience of playing with daughter’s Barbie IANS | Los Angeles

Hollywood star Dwayne John-son has shared how his ex-

perience has been of playing with his daughter Tia’s Barbie doll.

Dwayne shared a photo on his verified Instagram ac-count where he can be seen sitting with a Barbie doll on his hand while his younger daughter Tia is busy playing

with other toys.“Post Christmas, ‘Daddy come

play Barbie with me’ which in reality means.. Daddy holds this Barbie for a solid 45min straight while baby Tia does

whatever she wants and completely ignores Barbie the whole time. It’s 5 o’clock somewhere right? Hope your Christmas was a good one, my

friends. #DeathGripOnBarbie,” the actor wrote on Instagram.

The actor keeps his fans en-thralled by sharing moments spent with his infant daughter Tia. On Saturday the actor shared a photo which shows him sitting in front of the television with Tia. “Dwanta spends months carefully planning for Christmas and this lil’ inde-pendent boss opens just one gift and decides she’ll open the rest later, but first we’re watching LION KING... for the 987th time. Dwanta’s gotten only 4hrs sleep and it’s only 9am, but it’s 5 o’clock somewhere so... tequila for breakfast?” shared the actor.

Olympics-bound boxer Marcial’s first foray as pro a rousing successTDT | Manila

Tokyo Olympics-bound boxer Eumir Felix Marcial

has made a rousing debut in his first bout as a pro defeating American Andrew Whitfield by unanimous decision in their four-round middleweight clash recently in Los Angeles.

One of only four Filipino ath-letes so far to have booked a place in the rescheduled Olym-pics next year, the 25-year-old Marcial held his own against Whitfield on his way to a 40-36, 40-36, and 40-36 victory.

After looking tentative in the first round of his first fight in 10 months, Marcial got into the groove and plowed the 29-year-old Whitfield in the head and body for majority of the bout, convincing judges to give him a unanimous victory.

Last July, Marcial signed a promotional deal with Manny Pacquiao’s MP Promotions after giving his assurance to the As-sociation of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) that he will still pursue his Olympic campaign, no mat-ter what.

The Olympics already opened its doors to professional boxers starting in the 2016 Rio Games.

Marcial earned a spot in the Olympics by way of the Asia-Oceania qualifying tour-nament in Amman, Jordan, in March, where he won all of his four fights.

He has since been idle until

he decided to sign up with MP Promotions, which immediately gave him a chance to train with Roach starting last October.

“Turning professional is an important step in my journey

to the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo. A lot of the fighters I may face in the Olympics have already turned pro so my professional training will keep me at their level of experience when we

battle in the Olympics,” said the Zamboanga native.

“My ultimate goal has always been to make my dad’s dream a reality, a dream he has had since my first amateur fight, to win an Olympic gold medal. That is the prize I have in my eyes. I want to be the first to bring Olym-pic gold to the Philippines,” he added.

Marcial has been training with famed Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach at the latter’s Wild Card Boxing Club in Hol-lywood since October with the end view of levelling up his training for the Olympics, while also beginning his journey as a professional.

MP Promotions has made it known that it is fully supportive of Marcial’s pursuit of Olympic glory, and is making sure the fighter fulfils his obligations to flag and country.

India rip through Australian batting to eye series-levelling win

AFP | Melbourne

A depleted Indian attack ripped through Australia’s

top order to leave the world’s number one team with a slen-der two-run lead and in deep trouble yesterday after day three of the second Test.

At stumps in Melbourne, Australia were 133 for six with Cameron Green on 17 and Pat Cummins 15 in their second innings as the visitors zeroed in on levelling the series after losing the first Test by eight wickets.

India are doing so with a depleted attack after Umesh Yadav pulled up in his fourth over with a calf problem, limp-ing off the field.

It was a setback for India, who were already missing injured regulars Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma, but the remaining bowlers, led by Ravindra Jadeja (2-25) and Jasprit Bumrah (1-34), admirably picked up the slack.

India were all out for 326 in their first innings on the stroke of lunch, adding just 49 to their

overnight 277 for five in reply to Australia’s 195.

It gave them a 131-run lead, courtesy of stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane’s magnificent 112 and Jadeja’s 57. Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon took three wickets each.

Australia needed some of their big names to stand tall in the run chase. Opener Mat-thew Wade did well with a fighting 40 off 137 balls before being trapped lbw by the spin of Jadeja.

But Steve Smith, Marnus La-buschagne and Joe Burns all failed to step up.

Burns lasted just 10 balls, caught by Rishabh Pant off Yadav for four to follow his first-innings duck.

New Zealand dominate Pakistan despite Wagner injury

AFP | Mount Maunganui

Not even a broken toe could stop New Zealand’s pace

attack dominating day three of the first Test against Paki-stan, but their efforts to quick-ly wrap up the innings were slowed by Mohammad Rizwan and Faheem Ashraf’s late cen-tury stand yesterday.

As intermittent showers and an unseasonal hail storm dis-rupted proceedings at Mount Maunganui, the Black Caps’ pace foursome took five for 50 in the first two sessions before Pakistan rallied to be all out for 239 at stumps, still 192 in arrears.

Rizwan and Ashraf provid-ed a face-saving partnership for Pakistan with 107 for the seventh wicket before Rizwan

was run out for 71 by Mitch-ell Santner’s smart underarm throw from square leg.

Ashraf soldiered on to a ca-reer-best 91 before he was the last wicket to fall.

Kyle Jamieson returned the best figures for New Zealand with three for 35, while Neil Wagner ignored the pain from a broken toe to charge in for 21 overs to take two for 50.

He hobbled off at stumps describing it as one of the toughest days of his career and revealed he needed pain killers to keep going.

“After the first rain break I just went ‘dammit I can’t bear the pain’ and I got a jab and that took the pain away a little bit... but it started wearing off pretty quickly,” said Wagner, who broke a toe on his right foot when batting on day two.

Alex Wincocq joins Bahrain Raid Xtreme, replacing Dani Oliveras as co-driver to Nani RomaTDT | Manama

Bahrain Raid Xtreme (BRX) has confirmed that expe-

rienced Dakar Rally competi-tor, Alex Wincocq will replace Dani Oliveras as Nani Roma’s co-driver, for the team’s first entry into the iconic motor-sport event, which begins this week in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Wincocq joins Bahrain Raid Xtreme, as a replacement co-driver for BRX pilot Nani Roma, as a result of Oliveras recently returning a positive COVID-19 result. Although there might have been time for Dani to recover and test negative Bahrain Raid Xtreme is com-mitted to preserving the health and safety of all Dakar Rally participants, and therefore did not want to take any undue risks that could compromise this.

Wincocq is no stranger to the Dakar Rally, and brings a wealth of experience to his partner-ship with Nani Roma. In 1999 Wincocq attended his first Da-kar Rally, as a team mechanic, before going on to compete in a range of vehicles including quadbikes, pro trucks and bug-gy’s.

Commenting on the an-nouncement that he will join Nani Roma and Bahrain Raid

Xtreme, Alex Wincocq said: “It is incredibly disappointing for Dani (Oliveras) not to be able to help Bahrain Raid Xtreme in the teams first Dakar Ral-ly, but I am delighted to join Nani and grateful to the BRX team for welcoming me. I had been preparing for the Dakar for some time, but my previous plans did not play out the way I had anticipated, so to get the chance to compete with such an experienced and skilled driver as Nani, is hugely exciting.”

Bahrain Raid Xtreme pilot, Nani Roma, added: “I would just like to thank Dani for all his commitment and support in preparing for the Dakar Rally, and sorry that he will not be

able to put all the hard work into practice. I have known Alex for a long time, and he is a very experienced and talented person to have alongside me. We are ready to hit the ground running together, and the whole team is excited to have him join us, especially at such short notice.”

The Dakar Rally begins on the 3rd January, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Nani Roma will drive BRX’s bespoke Dakar Ral-ly T1 car – a four-wheel drive car, powered by a 3.5 litre tur-bo-charged petrol V6, that will take on almost 5,000 kilometres of competitive driving across the 12 stages through the King-dom of Saudi Arabia.

Federer out of Australian Open after knee surgery

AFP | Sydney

Twenty-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer

will miss the Australian Open for the first time in his career as he continues his recovery from two rounds of knee sur-gery, organisers said Monday.

The 39-year-old Swiss has been out of action since Feb-ruary but recently resumed training and was on the entry list for year’s opening Grand Slam, which will make a de-layed start on February 8.

Federer, a huge favourite with the Melbourne crowds, hasn’t missed the Australian Open since his debut in 2000, winning the trophy six times.

“In the end Roger ran out of time to get himself ready for the rigours of a Grand Slam and he’s very disappointed he won’t be coming to Melbourne in 2021,” said tournament chief Craig Tiley.

“We wish him all the best as he prepares for his come-back later in the year and look

forward to seeing him in Mel-bourne in 2022.”

Federer sat out most of the Covid-disrupted 2020 season after losing to Novak Djok-ovic in the Melbourne semis in January, his last competitive match.

He underwent keyhole sur-gery on his right knee in Feb-ruary, before needing a fol-low-up operation and calling off his season to recover.

The Swiss could only watch as Rafael Nadal matched his all-time men’s record of 20 Grand Slam singles titles with a 13th victory at the French Open.

Muharraq stay unbeaten after defeating RiffaBahrain Club take their first win of 2020/2021 season in Zain Bahrain Basketball League

• Mohammed Kuwayed buries five triples to spearhead Muharraq charge

• Bahrain Club end four-game losing streak with victory against Sitra

TDT | Manama

Muharraq maintained their un-beaten record in the 2020/2021 Zain Bahrain Basketball League

following a 95-72 win over Riffa last night at Zain Arena in Um Al Hassam.

Muharraq asserted their dominance in the first half before closing out the game strong to register their league-leading fifth triumph in as many contests.

The victors held a 19-14 lead at the end of the first quarter, which they turned to a 48-32 advantage heading into the half-time break.

Riffa then stretched the gap further in the final canto, during which they enjoyed their biggest lead of 26, as they made their way to the final buzzer.

Versatile national team forward Moham-med Kuwayed led Muharraq with 20 points while coming off the bench. He was red hot from beyond the arc, firing in five of his eight three-point attempts.

Younis Kuwayed added 13, while Bader Abdulla Malabes had 11 and Mohammed Juma’a had 10.

American professional Murphy Holloway chipped in with nine points and 11 rebounds

despite playing just half the game. For Riffa, Dexter Pittman from the US

had a game-high 31 but it was not enough to help lift his squad. Hassan Abbas added 20 as their only other player to finish in double-digit scoring.

Muharraq’s unblemished 5-0 win-loss record tops the league standings, whereas Riffa remained in the middle of the table after dropping to a 2-3 mark.

Meanwhile, Bahrain Club claimed their first win of the season after beating Sitra 97-83 in yesterday’s early game.

Bahrain Club led from the opening tip and used a strong second quarter where they outscored Sitra 22-13 to turn a slim 19-16 lead after the first period to a 41-29 advantage at the interval. They did well to maintain the gap from there.

Baqer Isa was their top scorer with 23 points, which included three three-point-ers. Bosnian-Serbian professional Dragan Tubak added 15, 22 rebounds and five as-sists while Fadhel Abbas had 13 off the bench and Ebrahim Al Basri chipped in with 12.

For Sitra, Ali Eid had 20 points while Diallo Aboubaker added 19, Isa Abdulameer 18 and Husain Safar 17.

Bahrain Club’s first victory came after starting the campaign with four straight setbacks. Sitra has an identical 1-4 win-loss record.

Kohli, Perry named cricketers of the decadeAFP | London

India captain Virat Kohli was named the ICC’s male crick-

eter of the decade yesterday as Australia all-rounder Ellyse Perry swept the top women’s awards.

Kohli and Perry were the big winners in the International Cricket Council’s Awards of the Decade, while Australian bats-man Steve Smith was crowned the best Test player.

Kohli, who was also named ODI player of the decade, lifted the 2011 World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy with India, before inspiring their first Test series victory on Aus-tralian soil two years ago.

“It’s just been an honour for me to be able to go out there and perform for my team, and it’s a great honour for me to win this award,” Kohli said in a video message.

“My only intention was to make winning contributions for the team and I just strive to do that in every game,” he added.

India’s all-formats cap-tain was the decade’s highest run-scorer with 20,396, hitting the most fifties (66) and hav-ing the highest average (56.97) of players with more than 70 innings.

He was also the only player with more than 10,000 one-day international runs, including

39 centuries and 48 fifties at an average of 61.83.

Perry was named female cricketer of the decade as well as the top ODI and T20 player as she cleaned up in the women’s awards.

Perry, who also played foot-ball for Australia at the 2011 World Cup, won four T20 world titles and the 2013 one-day World Cup, scoring 4,349 runs and taking 213 wickets in the decade.

“It has been tremendous to develop the women’s T20 game and take it forward,” Per-ry said. “Amazing to see where it’s come from when I was in-troduced to it.”
