Breaking Open the Word

Reflecting on next Sunday’s Gospel before you come to Mass can bringso much more meaning to your experience of liturgy. Here’s the Gospel

for next Sunday. How does this Gospel touch your life?

Scripture texts are taken from the NewAmerican Bible with Revised NewTestament and Revised Psalms ©1991,1986,1970 Confraternity of ChristianDoctrine, Washington DC and used bypermission of the copyright owner. Allrights reserved.

Gospel ReflectionQuestions

• Think of someone youknow who is truly humble.

• Think of how you canact with more humility.

• Think of who are thepeople you honor whenyou invite others to sit atyour table.

Some Questions forFamilies & Children

• Think of someone youknow who is not popular.

• Perhaps you could invitethat person to a party tohelp them feel more com-fortable with your friends.

August 28- Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary TimeLuke 14:1, 7-14On a sabbath Jesus went to dine

at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there were observing him carefully.

He told a parable to those who had been invited, noticing how they were choosing the places of honor at the table.

"When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet,do not recline at table in the place of honor.

A more distinguished guest than you may have been invited by him,and the host who invited both of you may approach you and say,'Give your place to this man,'and then you would proceed with embarrassmentto take the lowest place.

Rather, when you are invited,go and take the lowest placeso that when the host comes to you he may say,'My friend, move up to a higher position.'

Then you will enjoy the esteem of your companions at the table. For every one who exalts himself will be humbled,

but the one who humbles himself will be exalted."Then he said to the host who invited him,

"When you hold a lunch or a dinner,do not invite your friends or your brothersor your relatives or your wealthy neighbors,in case they may invite you back and you have repayment.

Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind;blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you.

For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."

Jesus shows us in today’s gospel that when we love someone, their needs become more important to us than our own. There-fore, when we love God, we should act to please God. If wepractice humility, and act in a charitable manner toward thosewho are less fortunate, we will find favor with God.

has had an incrediblelife-changing conversion in her

life. She has since desired to useher beautiful voice and

professional acting talents andbring them in the service of thegospel to tell the story of God’s

mercy and compassion. Our Sunday celebration will be

going from Happy Hour (ourItalian Feast) to Holy Hour (our

musical presentation)

Enter the Gate of Mercy!

Throughout this Extraordinary Year of Mercy, certaindoors to holy places were proclaimed by local bishops to be a “door ofmercy.” Upon entering the door, one gains a plenary indulgence (removal

of all temporal punishment associated with sins that have been forgiven),as long as one makes a confession within a week’s time, receives holycommunion and prays (Apostles’ Creed, Our Father and Hail Mary) for theintentions of the Holy Father. In our diocese, Bishop Murphy declared foursuch doors for our diocese located at the Cathedral of Saint Agnes, theSeminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington, the MontfortShrine of Our Lady of the Island in Eastport, and the Basilica of SacredHearts of Jesus and Mary in Southampton.

To the non Catholic, all of this might sound a little too easy – or evenperhaps “magical.” Say these words, do this action, and you’ve got a sureshot at heaven. To some, it might seem to be contradictory to the questionthat Jesus is asked at the beginning of today’s gospel: “Will only a fewpeople be saved?” Jesus’ answer seems to indicate that the doorway tosalvation is pretty narrow: “Strive to enter through the narrow gate, formany, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough.” Well,it doesn’t seem like you need a lot of strength to go through a mercy door, have a confession, receive the Eucharist and say a few prayers.

So what is this narrow door that Jesus speaks about in today’s gospel – andwhat might that say to us during this Extraordinary Year of Mercy? Theanswer to this question can be found in the detail that begins today’sgospel: Jesus is making his way to Jerusalem. Soon he will enter that holycity through the Eastern Gate of the city - the gate through which the Jewsbelieved the longed-for Messiah would someday enter the city. Thisparticular gate was called by the Jews “the Mercy Gate” because it leddirectly to the Temple Mount, the holiest shrine of Israel. On Palm Sunday,Jesus entered this gate – and was hailed by the crowds as Messiah. Butsoon after, he entered into a much narrower gate that led him to Calvary, torejection, crucifixion and death. Many accompanied Jesus through theEastern Gate; few accompanied him through the gate that led to his death.

So what is the point of all this? Jesus calls us to a fidelity, to walk withhim through the narrow gate. The rejected crucified Jesus is present in thepoor, the broken ones, the obnoxious people, the challenging people of ourlife. How easy it is to stand by the side of the hero – how challenging to befaithfully and consistently present to the lowly in our midst. In thisExtraordinary Year of Mercy, we are called not just to walk through a door, but to be the door of mercy to the misunderstood and forgotten, therejected and the lonely. Salvation lies in being consistently and lovinglypresent to the crucified Christ now present in the least of our brothers andsisters.

Cristo. “no sé quiénessoís.

Twenty first Sunday ordinary Time, 2016 C

FOOD PANTRY EMERGENCYDear Family of Saint Brigid,

For more than 31+ million Americans, every daybecomes a struggle to find food for their family.Millions of Americans are either “out-of-work”, receiving unemployment or in fear of losing theirjobs, their homes and their stability. There are alsomillions of Americans who are classified by governmental statistics as “America’s poor”, whocontinually find themselves left behind on whatstatisticians call “the road to prosperity”.

The statistics, cold as they are, become even morefrightening when we learn that one in five childrenlive at or below the poverty level. It is a well-known fact that children who are denied an adequate diet are at greater risk of not realizingtheir potential as God intends each child to reach.

We, at Parish Outreach, believe, there should always be enough food in our Food Pantry shelvesto serve “those who are in need”. We are gratefulto the sixty or more parishioners who continuallybring food to the weekend masses, to our “anonymous” parishioners who leave food at ourFood Pantry door, to the Knights of Columbus whobeg for us at supermarkets and to Long IslandCares and Island Harvest who supplement ourneeds with grants and donations. In light of our growing needs, St. Brigid ParishOutreach appeals to our greater “St. Brigid Family” to help us serve God’s poor--” by bringing one or two items of food” each week tohelp us provide for the needs of our Outreach fami-lies.

We are always in need of:

Peanut Butter/JellyTomato/”Spaghetti” SauceCanned VegetablesEveryone asks for corn!Canned Meats and TunaPowdered Milk (Packets)Juices (Plastic or six-packs)Beans/Rice

As always....we are so grateful to the fifty tosixty families who donate food each weekend. We share our gratitude with the St. Anthony So-ciety and the Durazzano Society who blessedtheir feast days by donating baskets of food. They are “our blessings” and we remember theirmembers in tender thought and prayer.
