April-
National Child Abuse Awareness Month
DID YOU KNOW?
VIRTUS and Background Screenings )
The VIRTUS: Protecting God’s Children for Adults program is an integral component to the prevention effort
within each parish and school. VIRTUS outlines the issues surrounding child sexual abuse and brings awareness
to the ways that sexual abuse harms victims, their families and communities.
A key element of the training is recognizing the warning signs of abuse and demonstrating the appropriate ways
to respond to suspicious behavior.
VIRTUS Training empowers each participant with the 5 steps of prevention:
▪ Knowing the warning signs of abuse ▪ Being aware of child and youth
▪ Controlling access to children through screening behavior
▪ Monitoring all programs and ministries ▪ Communicating concerns

REFLECTION
TODAY’S READINGS:
SUNDAY, April 21
Acts 10:34, 37-43
Colossians 3:1-4
John 20:1-9
REFLECTIONS
Can you imagine that moment? Can you imagine
the stomach drop with dizzying realization: "It's all
true. All of it is true! The past three years weren't a
dream that ended horribly wrong." Can you imagine
all the doubts and despair of the past days chased
away like smoke on the wind by a rolled up burial
cloth? By an empty tomb? It didn't start that way, of
course. "'They have taken the Lord from the tomb,
and we don't know where they put him.'" This frantic
news from Mary Magdalene would have been
another unexpected blow. After all that happened,
now his body has been stolen? The love and
devotion in Peter and John is apparent. They don't
wait to collect more information or stop by the tomb
when they have a chance. They run to the site.
When is the last time you ran for something? This
isn't a run for exercise, but a huffing and puffing bolt
fueled by desperation. Can you imagine that
moment? The fear pounding in their temples,
matching their accelerated heart rate. Can you
imagine the impatient affection of John, who outruns
Peter but refuses to enter the tomb alone? And
then, upon entry, "He saw and believed." This is the
drama of our great feast! The promise that seemed
lost has been found. The dead are raised. Long
before the Easter eggs and ham, we are invited to
meditate on this divine reality. We are invited to feel
the desperation and joy of that first Easter Sunday
deep in our bones. Because it is not just Mary's
story. It's not Peter and John's story. It's our story.
From the greatest defeat can come the most awe-
inspiring victory, and this is true not just for our God,
but for each one of us. He is risen indeed! Alleluia!
Called by Name: Mary. Even in the garden of the
resurrection, Jesus goes unrecognized at first. The
Gospel of John records a weeping woman,
mistaking the risen savior for a gardener. Until, that
is, she is called by name. Mary.
Robert. Catherine. Joanne. Steven. Hailey. Travis.
Jesus rises for you. He rises for me. He rises for
each and every one of us. We are called by name in
the garden of the resurrection. This Sunday and
every Sunday, Jesus comes to meet us. Imagine
sitting with him. How is he looking at you? What do
you say to him? When the resurrected Lord greets
you with a smile, how do you respond? -LPI

Easter Prayer of Thanksgiving
Good and gracious heavenly Father, we come
before you on this Easter Sunday with full
and grateful hearts for the gift of the Paschal
Mystery that you showed us in the life, death,
and resurrection of your Son, our brother by
adoption, Jesus Christ. Bless us and all those
who profess belief in your saving love. Bless
also those who have yet to profess belief in you. You are
God for all. We ask all this in Christ's name. Amen.

We all know that music doesn’t exist on
the pages of a worship aid or hymnal;
it lives somewhere in the bones of each worshiper.
The combined efforts of so many
in our ministry have brought life to our
Triduum and Easter music,
supporting our congregants to become
the one joyful voice of our faith community.
Many hours have been spent in rehearsal
and refinement of beautiful sacred masterworks
that have so greatly enhanced
the worship of all of those gathered.
Thank you!
Many thanks to the members of St. Edward Music Minist
Thank you to the Liturgical Ministers who served our parish
and guests this Easter weekend - Altar Ministers, Sacristans,
Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, Altar Servers, and Ministers
of Hospitality.
Thank you to Susan Johnson for taking care of all
the issues that arise during these services.
Thank you to Kelly Weaver for staffing our Nursery
and watching over our little ones.
Thank you to Kathleen Wood and the many
parishioners who helped with the food
preparation, serving, and clean up for the Easter
Vigil reception.
And, thank you to our Arts and Environment group
who helped decorate our worship spaces
throughout the seasons of Lent, Holy Week, and Easter.
Your dedication is commendable and we greatly appreciate each
one of you. May God bless you in your ministry to our Church and
our parishioners.

Earth Day and "Laudato Si"
Stewardship is an ethic that
embodies the responsible
planning and management of
resources. The concepts of
stewardship can be applied to
the environment and nature,
economics, health, property,
information, theology, indeed,
all aspects of life.
Responsible planning and management of resources.
That is what we are called to do with the environment.
Not only the natural environment, but also the man-made
environment in which we live.
Pope Francis has made a compelling statement on the
environment by saying that we are truly the masters of the
environment and that we are called by God to protect it,
not only for ourselves but also for those who live on the
fringes of the community, those who have no voice.
In paragraph 13 of his encyclical, "Laudato Si," the pope
says: "The urgent challenge to protect our common home
includes a concern to bring the whole human family
together to seek a sustainable and integral development,
for we know that things can change. The Creator does not
abandon us; he never forsakes his loving plan or repents
of having created us. Humanity still has the ability to work
together in building our common home. Here I want to
recognize, encourage, and thank all those striving in
countless ways to guarantee the protection of the home
which we share. Particular appreciation is owed to those
who tirelessly seek to resolve the tragic effects of
environmental degradation on the lives of the world's
poorest. Young people demand change. They wonder
how anyone can claim to be building a better future
without thinking of the environmental crisis and the
sufferings of the excluded."
So as we move toward implementing the pope's vision
of care for our common environmental heritage, let us
keep each other in prayer as we protect and steward
our mother earth.

Some listeners thought this sounded like
modern mindfulness, the stilling of thoughts to
be simply “in the moment”. There were
similarities, but he preferred to put it in the
context of Christian contemplation through the
ages: of the Desert Fathers or St. John of the
Cross, who wrote that “God’s first language is
silence.” (Fr. Thomas liked to add, to that,
“Everything else is a bad translation.”) He also
gave contemplation a modern twist, calling it
“divine psychotherapy”. In centering prayer the
mind was purified of emotional traumas
repressed, often from childhood, in the
unconscious, and the false self made true
again, open in humility (“the greatest strength
there is”) to grace and to the needs of others.
Long before Freud, a loving God had been
secretly doing this. -Fr. Thomas Keating
