Denims and Diamonds - What a night!

Where do I begin? We had a total of 120 lovelies who came for the event despite the bad weather, dressed for the occasion,

or rather dressed to kill’.

There were games, housie, dancing and dining. We had our beloved Oscar Menezes with his golden voice giving us quite a

few numbers. Mr. Victor Fernandes also sang beautifully and entertained the crowd with his showmanship.

Thank you, my Dear Elders, for coming in such large numbers and being such wonderful sports. We promise you many

more such events to come.

A big thank you and shout out goes out to Samantha Pasha and Jake Texeira who helped me organise this event.

iBROWSEReporting Pakistan in October with Meena Menon!September’s iBrowse was handled so effortlessly by academic, researcher, photographer and activist- Pankaj Sekhsaria. It was an evening which yet again was a marvelously educative experience. So glad the rain held off till the middle of the evening, but everyone was so engrossed, no one really was concerned about it, and it stopped when it was time to leave. However, some iBrowsers had to gingerly remove their shoes and socks and roll up trousers to retrieve their cars from the flooded basement. This was Pankaj Sekhsaria’s second visit to iBrowse. The fact that the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are very volatile and earthquake prone and yet our powers- that- be want to make them into another Dubai or Singapore, exposes the level of caring to understand the fragile ecology of the place by them. Roads and infrastructure work has already begun. With so called ‘progress,’ the indigenous communities who have lived there for millennia, are being disturbed by the intrusion of roads and so-called building of infrastructure.

Ofcourse encouraged by stories of canabalism which is untrue. Sadly the trees, the girth of which have not been seen since the logging of forests in huge swathes have commenced. And the loss of mangroves have eaten away at the coastline. The islands sit on the legendary Ring of Fire and Sekhsaria explained that the ecosystem boasts of the endangered Leather Back Turtles, Robber Crabs because they steal coconuts and a variety of exotic birds should be conserved for posterity. His PPT presentation about his book - Islands in Flux -- The Andaman and Nicobar Story had the hall full of students and iBrowsers in thrall for an hour, after which he had to field a number of pithy questions and comments. The book was sold @ 320 with a 20% discount given by Harper Collins. The book for discussion is ‘The Last Vicereine’ by Rhiannon Jenkins Tsang a brand new publication by Penguin. The book can be borrowed by regular readers from Prem in the library, only after the iBrowse event on the 27th October. Our next event is on the 27th of October with Meena Menon and her book “ Reporting Pakistan” published by Penguin. See you there at the Ballroom @ 6pm and listen to one of India’s most experienced political journos who was expelled from Pakistan in 2014.

Marianne Furtado de Nazareth - Sub Committee

The Morning that was: 17th September started off with heavy rain and I was beginning to wonder if there would be a crowd for the coffee morning. The ladies however braved the rains and attended the coffee morning with a difference. It was a real fun filled morning with 56 ladies in attendance. It was a fancy dress and a few ladies took real pains and decked themselves in real fancy wonders and they were given a little gift from the Club for their efforts. The games, in keeping with the theme turned

LADIES COFFEE MORNING

out to be real mind bogglers for them especially trying to recognize famous personalities in fancy dress!! A special thanks to the Club canteen for the delicious biriyani and to Santosh for all his hard work. I wish more Ladies would come to see the fun we have. The Coffee Morning that was to be held on 15th October stands cancelled. Many ladies approached me to do so since the Little Sisters of the Poor are having their Annual Fete on that day. In case there is to be a Coffee Morning on the 22nd or 29th of October, the Club will inform you and also put up a notice at the Reception. If not, we will meet in November. Sorry for the inconvenience.

LIBRARY

ikidz little readers - children’s cornerIn September we had a group of professional certified story educators interact with 30 members and their children aged 3 to 8. They had a animated session of storytelling, role playing and introduction to the fun of reading, the excitement and enthusiasm of the tiny tots had to be seen to be believed, we had limited seats on this occasion but watch out for our even larger program next time.

The ikidz little readers program has plans for book treasure hunts, board games olympics and fast reading sports, these are planned for the school holidays in the children’s corner so come to the library and watch out for the announcements.

New Books: We have again added 30 new books tothe library including a number of best sellers and children’s books. We had 70 books donated by Alton, Helan, Mary, Ganesh, and Marie. Thank you for presenting your favourite books and magazines to the library in September. After watching our recommended author for the month generate so much excitement last month and your enthusiasm to read all of his selected books, watch out for our choice for October. Pick up books by this author and you will be very satisfied.

My Music -Open Mike: Youth Members, ourfirst My Music featured Steven De Nazareth in the library and it was such a fun gig, great singing and guitar playing, with members of the audience jamming with him and clapping and singing along to a range of rock classics. It was an hour and a half program but just would not end as every one was having so much fun. In the break we saw many of the teens pick up a book and read and I am sure they will be back to cruise the book shelves again. Participate by contacting Lalit Braganza at [email protected], to be the next newly discovered talented singer, musician or stand up comedian. Our My Music program in October in the library is on the 14th at 6 pm and features a talented trio of Manisha, Ninnoy and Joshua. Come sing along and enjoy browsing through the books.

Ibrowse: September Ibrowse took us to the AndamanIslands and Dr. Pankaj Sekhsaria shared with us his book “Islands in Flux” in his slide presentation. He shared with us the unique flora and fauna distinct to the islands and his strong beliefs in the need to preserve them. The Ibrowse discussion was on the Indian servants influence on the British Queen from the book “Victoria and Abdul” by Sharabani Basu. The queens ability in her old age to learn to read and write Urdu and speak strongly against discrimination , even though it stemmed from her fondness for Abdul was discussed by all. The next book discussion is even more relevant and its “The last Vicereine” by Rhiannon Jenkins Tsang which covers Lady Mountbatten’s stint in India, the book is in the library for all the Members. Do come and enjoy the various reaction and interpretations

from our Ibrowse readers. The next Ibrowse is very current and topical and is sure to interest all our Members and is on Oct. 27th, Meena Menon’s book “Reporting Pakistan”.

We would like to inform the Members that during formation of Catholic Club, one of the objectives was its responsibility towards the underprivileged and

weaker sections of society. Hence, keeping this objective in mind, we at Catholic Club Orphans Trust(CCOT, a body under the aegis of Catholic Club) strive to bring some joy to the hundreds of children we work with. The Managing Committee has been very supportive of our programmes. We comply with all statutory requirements and we have 80G certifi cation.

One of the fund-raising activities is holding the Annual CCOT Golf Tournament and the 2016-17 Tournament was held at the Bangalore Golf Club (BGC). We are grateful and thankful to Mr. Rizwan Razzack of M/s Prestige Group for being the principal sponsor of the Tournament and we sincerely appreciate their generosity. We are also greatly thankful to the other sponsors namely Mr. Austin Roach of RBD and Charmis Hotel and M/s Epson India. Also appreciate the sincere efforts of Mr. Javed Sheriff in co-ordinating the tournament and Mr. Sunil Vasant of BGC in conducting the tournament at the Golf Course. May God Bless all our benefactors!

We start off with a Medical Camp on October 15, 2017 at the Catholic Club, followed by the Graduation ceremony of the children of Good Shepherd Girls Home, the fi rst batch to have completed a Soft Skill Training program conducted by TalentEase. This will be held from 2 to 4pm. This programme commenced last year with the assistance of TalentEase for 58 Girls, with 24 sessions during the year. Hence please do come and experience the result of this activity initiated for the fi rst time by CCOT.

All this is possible only if there is a continuous patronage from our donors. We give below the Budget for the main programmes for the year 2017-18:

Medical Camps: Rs.1.50 Lakhs (inclusive of Dentistry and Ophthalmic requirements)

Orphans Day: Rs.5 Lakhs (Christmas party for 600 children at the Club on December 3, 2017)

Soft Skill Training by TalentEase: Rs.7 Lakhs (for 600 children of all 10 institutions under CCOT)

Asha Foundation: Rs. 2 Lakhs (an educational initiative by the Most Rev. Arch Bishop of Bangalore)

(Detailed Budget will be up on our Website and App)

CCOT also extends help to the institutions for supply of equipment such as Solar Water Heaters, Tables & Benches, Water Filter and any such Equipment on need basis.

Well dear Members these all are funded by CCOT and needs Nurturing, Care and Financial assistance. It is by no means an easy task to organize funds required in conducting these programmes and without support from our Members it would be IMPOSSIBLE. We

need all the help we can so please be generous with your support. An earnest appeal for your contribution which could also be by way of CSR towards the Trust in fulfi lling the objectives of Catholic Club and needless to mention that all contribution are eligible to claim exemption under 80 G of Income Tax Act

Kindly contact any of the Club Committee members or CCOT Committee or the Club secretary.

Gilroy D Silva - Chairman.

YOUTH

O-la O-ctober! Our first very first My Music Unplugged Sessions @ the Library could not have kicked of any better as we had the electrifying Steven DeNazareth take our 35 strong member audience down the rock and roll road with hits ranging from Smoke on the water to good ole Bryan Adams. He was later joined in by some extremely talented individuals Manisha (vocals), Ben and Noah (guitar) who added their blend of gospel, pop and even some metal. The surprise addition to the evening was rounded of by Mr. Prem, our beloved staff member at the club who played his way into our hearts on the tabla, pulling off some super beats to complete a memorable evening! I would personally like to thank all our performers for being so sporting and the audience for listening keenly and supporting their every move. How often can one say the library was rocking!Having experienced this magical evening come together I would like to further encourage the Youth and Members to please come forward and showcase their talents and make use of this wonderful opportunity to perform in front of your friends and family. Our next instalment of the acoustic unplugged session goes live on October 14th

at the Library at 6 pm. Manisha and Ninnoy will take you down memory lane with some of their favourite songs and maybe we will have some of their friends join in as well (please look out for the poster) All our welcome! I would like to encourage the Youth of the Club to please avail of the wonderful sporting facilities and the revamped gym equipped with the latest state-of-the-art facilities. It is our intention to host a sports fest soon and with increased turnout at the club hopefully this event can take shape at the earliest. Watch out for music classes by TAAQademy and dance classes to keep you busy on the weekends!

The club’s ‘spooky skeletons’ will come out of the closet this year as we have the Masquerade Ball on 31st October, 8.30 pm onwards. The theme for the ball this year will see the return of one our favourite fictional households ‘The Addam’s Family’ meeting our favourite wizard of all time Harry Potter and some of his friends! So get yourselves prepped and decked for a freaky magical night as we have prizes for the best dressed characters (strictly per the theme) and also the best (Addams) family! We also have the super fun Fernandes Band adding to the drama ... Be there or be gone... muahahaha!!!

Until next time. Stay young!

On 15th September, 2017, we had a Recollection by Fr Charles Arul OFM and Fr Joy Prakash OFM on the topic ‘St. Francis and the ripples of his silent protest’. St. Francis, the man of his own time, made a silent protest in the society and in the Church by his way of life. The Medieval Church was rich, emphasised the patriarchal dimension in governance and struggled evermore for power, but St. Francis was poor, emphasised fraternal dimension and was ready to be subject to all creatures. He made a difference in his life by silently protesting for peace amidst war and misunderstanding by concretely promoting peace among the civil and ecclesial authorities and the common people; he protested for penance by working for the conversion of heretics, of sinful hearts and of the evil social system; and he protested for the poverty of our Lord Jesus and his Mother. He invites all to be part of his silent protest inspired by the Spirit of the Lord. On Friday, 13th October, 2017 at 7 pm we will be having a Recollection. Details will be announced later.A very special thanks to the Faith Department Subcommittee members Ms Lynette, Mr Dilip D’Souza, Mr. Tom Thomas for all their support and hardwork in ensuring we have programmes every month. If you would like to suggest a speaker or would like to participate in the organising of these programmes kindly contact us.
