We are visited by three mes-sengers today. The first is Isaiah, with a message of hope and joy, “a year of favor . . . a day of vin-dication.” Next comes Paul, with a message for the Thessalonians that we can take to heart as well, advising us how to live while we wait for Christ’s return. Finally we hear from Jesus’ messenger, John the Baptist, who came to testify to the Messiah. Let us heed their messages as we prepare for Christ’s coming.

Part Two: About Mychal’s Message Founded in 2002 by Shannon Hickey, Mychal’s Message is a non-profit organization created to honor the life of Father Mychal F. Judge, O.F.M. During his life, Father Mychal shared his message with the rich and the poor, the healthy and the sick, firefighters, police officers, and fri-ars, and the many men, women and children who called him ‘friend.’ His message was simple, interdenominational, and touched many lives. It is the mission of Mychal’s Message to continue sharing that message with others. It is a grace to walk in his footsteps and encounter the homeless and poor, meeting basic needs, while restoring dignity with love. Mychal’s Message began in January 2002 as 11-year-old Shannon marked the anniversary of her liver transplant. Every year she celebrated her anniversary with a party, presents and cake. That year, Shannon de-cided to mark the anniversary in a more meaningful way. In lieu of gifts, she asked for socks for the homeless. “I’ll give them away in memory of Father Mychal,” she told her family. Father Mychal, a dear family friend, was an inspiration to Shannon and on her transplant anniversary in 2002, she wanted to celebrate her life by remembering his. Word spread quickly and before long, Shannon collected 1,500 pair of socks. A printed card with Father Mychal’s prayer was attached to each pair. As those first socks were being distributed to the homeless, the family realized that the prayer was as important as the socks. The prayer became Mychal’s message. Father Mychal inspired Shannon, Shannon inspired others, and Mychal’s Message was born. To learn more about this story and impor-tant ministry, please check the website: www.mychalsmessage.org.

Part Three: The Prayer Card Story The prayer written by Father Mychal Judge enabled him to open his heart to God’s divine grace. Each day, Father Mychal asked God to guide him to the people and places that needed him most, while allowing God to speak and work through him. His prayer became a way of life.

Our parish Christmas project is unique because it allows each of us to participate in a ministry begun with a collection of socks for the home-less and needy by a young girl years ago. So, perhaps in addition to us “hanging our own stockings on the chimney with care” each of us, young and old, can offer many new stockings to the poor and needy this year so their feet may be warm and comfortable. We won’t see the expressions on their faces, or hear the shy or gentle words of gratitude, but may we know some simple gifts may make a difference in lives of strangers, God’s children whose feet could use a new pair of socks. My brother and I met the grandparents of Shannon this past year in Assisi. They live nine months in Lancaster, PA and three months in As-sisi. We met them in January three days after arriving in Assisi attending Sunday Mass at the Basilica of St. Francis and have enjoyed a wonderful friendship with them to this day. They are very committed to Mychal’s Message and why wouldn’t they be supportive? Their granddaughter be-gan this important work, of which I am grateful to support. Therefore, I bring it to your attention and invite you to participate in sending as many socks as we can from our parishes here in North Dakota. We are asking our Religious Education kids to bring socks to the parish and we are ask-ing all our parishioners to donate new socks for any age. We will be col-lecting socks through December 25th. In memory of Fr. Mychal Judge, let us remember when “He said yes” he would want us to do the same.
