St. Teresa of Jesus (Teresa of Ávila) Feast day: October 15

Teresa of Ávila, also called Saint Teresa of Jesus, baptized as Teresa Sánchez de Cepeda y Ahumada (28 March, 1515 – 4 October, 1582), was a prominent Spanish mystic, Roman Catholic saint, Carmelite nun, an author of the Counter Reformation and theologian of contemplative life through mental prayer. She was a reformer of the Carmelite Order and is considered to be a founder of the Discalced Carmelites along

with John of the Cross.

In 1622, forty years after her death, she was canonized by Pope Gregory XV and on 27 September 1970, was named a Doctor of the Church by Pope Paul VI. Her books, which include her autobiography (The Life of Teresa of Jesus) and her seminal work El Castillo Interior (trans.: The Interior Castle) are an integral part of Spanish Renais-sance literature as well as Christian mysticism and Christian meditation practices as she entails in her other important work, Camino de Perfección (trans.: The Way of Perfection).

After her death, the cult of Saint Teresa was also known in Spain during the 1620s due to the religious claim and debate of national patronage versus Saint James Matamoros. Teresa is revered as a Doctor of prayer. The mysticism in her works exerted a forma-tive influence upon many theologians of the following centuries, such as Frances of Sales, Fenelon and Port-Royalists.

Saint Teresa, who reported visions of Jesus and Mary, was a strong believer in the power of holy water and wrote that she used it with success to repel evil and tempta-tions.

World Mission Sunday Special Collection Next Weekend, October 18-19

The following is the message from Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York: Dear Friends in the Lord:

“Today, vast numbers of people still do not know Jesus Christ.” Pope Francis begins his message for this year’s celebration of World Mission Sunday with these words. But, he quickly offers us a way to make a joy-filled, life-giving difference. The Holy Father says: “World Mission Sunday is a privileged moment when the faithful of various continents engage in prayer and concrete gestures of solidarity in support of the young Churches in mission lands.” On October 19, as our archdiocesan family celebrates this “privileged moment,” let us join with our brothers and sisters around the world who will gather at the Lord’s Table to celebrate, with great joy, our com-mon vocation as missionaries. Our “prayers” and “concrete gestures of solidarity” will help build local churches, like the church in Mongolia, the world’s youngest Catholic Church, and churches across the globe. Through the world of these churches and their witnesses to Christ, the poor receive practical help and experience God’s love, mercy, hope, and peace. Your financial assistance on World Mission Sunday, offered in the collection for the Society of the Propagation of the Faith, will support the 1,150 young mission (arch)dioceses and communities who await the “Good News” of Jesus as their saving hope. Pope Francis encourages us to take joyful part in the Church’s mission to all the nations as we live our lives grounded in live of Jesus and with concern for the needs of the most disadvantaged. May World Mission Sunday offer each one of us an opportunity to accom-plish both as we share the joy of the Gospel and help the poor with our fervent prayers and through our gen-erous hearts. Domingo Mundial de las Misiones Próximo Fin de Semana, Octubre 18-19

El siguiente es el mensaje de nuestro Cardenal Timothy Dolan, Arzobispo de Nueva York: Queridos Amigos en el Señor: Estimados amigos en el Señor: “Hoy, una gran cantidad de gente todavía no conoce a Jesucristo.” El Papa Francisco comienza sus mensaje para la celebración relativa a este año del Domingo de la Misión Mundial con estas palabras. Pero él, rápidamente, nos ofrece una manera de vivir alegres y de vida plena al dar y al hacer la diferencia. El Santo Padre dice que “El Domingo de la Misión Mundial es un momento privilegiado en que los fieles de varios continentes se comprometen en oración y en gestos concretos en solidaridad y apoyo a las Iglesias jóvenes en tierras misioneras.” Como familia arqudiocesana celebramos nuestro, “momento privilegiado” el 19 de octubre uniéndonos a nuestros hermanos y hermanas de todo el mundo alrededor de la Mesa del Señor, para celebrar con gran alegría nuestra común vocación de misioneros. Nuestras “oraciones” y nuestros “gestos concretos de solidaridad” ayudarán a construir Iglesias locales, como la Iglesia en Mongolia, Iglesia Católica más joven del mundo, e Iglesias a través del globo. A través de estas Iglesias del mundo y de sus testigos de Cristo, los pobres reciben ayuda práctica y experimentan la misericordia, la esperanza, la paz, y el amor de Dios. Fall is already here and the holidays are quickly approach-ing. Thanksgiving is November 27.

The Social Action Committee is already preparing for the holiday. The Thanksgiving menus will be put out on October 18. Distribution of holiday food will start on November 8 and continue through November 22.

OLGC SPORTS ASSOCIATION NEWS The OLGC Sports Association is hosting our 3rd annual Movie Night on Friday October 17th at 6:00 PM. Pizza and light snacks will be provided. A sports-themed film for the whole family will be shown OUTSIDE in the school park-ing lot. There will be a $10 charge per family to defray the cost of pizza and refreshments. All parish families are wel-come to join the fun! In the event of rain, we will resched-ule.

FREE LAW CLINIC Attorney, Lyda Tyburec will be offering FREE legal consultations to members of our parish who need legal advice especially in immigration and family law matters, once a month on Saturday from 10 AM‐1 PM at the parish office. For an appointment, please call
