Dear Friends, Christ not only preached meekness; He practiced it. He began his public life professing meekness, “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land.” And he ended his public life by practicing it. Hanging upon the cross, while praying for those who put them there: “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:34) The meek man says Ven. Fulton Sheen, “is not a man who refuses to fight, nor is he a man who will never become angry. A meek man is a man who will never do one thing: he will never fight when his conceit is attacked, but only when a principle is at stake.” (Fulton Sheen, The Cross and the Beatitudes) Interestingly and perhaps more importantly, Sheen remarks that “meekness is self-possession. That is why the reward of meekness is possession. A weak person can never be meek, because he is never self-possessed.” (Fulton Sheen, Cries from The Cross) We can hear the words of our Lord in this, “no one takes my life from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.” (John 10:18) We can see this in the act of every martyr, death before sin. We are well aware of the unique and demanding nature of the Beatitudes. Make no mistake about it, the try us. And this is the point. The beatitude on meekness illustrates this clearly. Worldly logic seeks to conquer one’s adversary, overpower those who disagree with you, and hate those who refuse to go along with them and have the same hate. The Christian on the other hand seeks to conquer self, to overpower our passions, our concupiscence, our self-centeredness, and hate that which leads us to hate God and neighbor. Rather than dominating others, the message of the Gospel is to dominate oneself, to truly become “the captain of my soul.” (Cf., Invictus a poem by William Ernest Henley) What is this self-possession? It is the expression of someone who is balanced, strong, and free. That is to say, it is to do what needs to be done, moved by internal principles (not merely subjective ones, but truths internalized). The person who is free is one who does everything out of love, who does good even when no one is obliges them, or because others are watching, nor on account of commendations or rewards. Goodness and love of the other is a reward in and of itself. Self-possession is nothing other than doing all things out of love. This brings us back to the beginning and the purpose of our look at the Beatitudes. Since ours is a love that is radically supernatural and has a very concrete name, which is Jesus Christ, the most important reason for committing ourselves to the serious work of self-discipline is for us, one of a supernatural order, namely the will of God, manifested in Jesus Christ. In other words, it is God's will that each one of us conquers our personality and submits to Jesus Christ, a conquest that cannot leave anything out. No aspect of our personality... can remain inaccessible to the grace of the sacrament of holy orders, which is a grace of configuration with Jesus Christ. This time of quarantine has brought about angst and restlessness; it is not surprising. Nevertheless, proper perspective is needed, lest we succumb to angry thoughts and iniquitous blaming. We should be clear about where things are coming from and why they are coming. Fulton Sheen is helpful to this end, “Our enemy is often our Savior; our persecutor is often our redeemer; our executioners are often our allies; our crucifiers are often our benefactors — for they reveal what is selfish, base, conceited, and ignoble in us. But we must not hate them for that. To hate them for hating us is weakness.” Therefore, “be glad and rejoice for their hate. It will harm only our pride, but not our character; it will cauterize our conceit, but not blemish our soul — for the very insult of the world is the consecration of our goodness.” (Fulton Sheen, Cries from the Cross) The Christian, who is a disciple and follower of Jesus Christ, should seek to reflect in himself, as far as possible, the beautiful character that shines forth in the Incarnate Son of God. Do not be concerned, however, if it follows earthly logic or if others agree with it. Oftentimes the ways of God are above our ways, but he came to heal, restore and elevate our ways. He is inviting us to Blessedness. If you want to know the way, Jesus Christ is the Way. If you are seeking the answers, Jesus Christ is the Truth. If you want life in abundance, Jesus Christ is the life. This is indeed the Good News! Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us, Fr. Brian

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. What is a Spiritual Communion? St. Thomas Aquinas once defined Spiritual Communion as “an ardent desire to receive Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament and in lovingly embracing Him as if we had actually received Him.” You just need to approach Him with sincerity, humility and a desire to follow in His footsteps in acts of faith and charity. St. Jean-Marie Vianney, a French priest famous for converting countless souls to Christ in his parish of Ars in the 19th century, once said “when we feel the love of God growing cold, let us instantly make a Spiritual Communion. When we cannot go to the church, let us turn towards the tabernacle; no wall can shut us out from the good God.”

PARISH REGISTRATION Are You a Registered Parishioner? If you attend Mass here regularly, we encourage you to register as a parishioner of Our Lady of Peace parish. Why registering is important: 1. If we as a parish do not know who is out there, how can we serve the needs of all? This includes single people or young families who may not see the need to register. 2. Make Sacrament prep easier when the time comes. If you’re not a registered parishioner, this may greatly delay the process for Sacrament prep. 3. Letters of Recommendation There are occasions where letters of recommendations

are needed from your parish pastor (ie Catholic school enrollment, scholarships, godparent eligibility, etc.). If you’re not registered, we cannot provide this letter. Anyone, regardless of where they live is welcome to register at OLOP. Please note: there is a three (3) month waiting period from the date of registration before being considered a full-fledged registered parishioner. Any requests for pastor signatures on any forms, letters, or wedding preparation paperwork cannot not be processed within the 3 months. To register, call 408-988-4585, or email us at [email protected] for a registration form.
