January 16, 2022 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

In the Wedding By Dr. Scott Hahn

Think of these first weeks after Christmas as a season of "epiphanies." The Liturgy is showing us Who Jesus is and what He has revealed about our relationship with God. Last week and the week before, the imagery was royal and filial - Jesus is the newborn king of the Jews who makes us co-heirs of Israel's promise, beloved children of God. Last week in the Liturgy we went to a Bap-tism. This week we're at a wedding. We're being shown another dimension of our relationship with God. If we're sons and daughters of God, it's because we've married into the family. Have you ever wondered why the Bible begins and ends with a wedding - Adam and Eve's in the garden and the mar-riage supper of the Lamb (compare Genesis 2:23-24 and Revelation 19:9; 21:9; 22:17)?

Throughout the Bible, marriage is the symbol of the covenant relationship God desires with His chosen people. He is the Groom, humanity His beloved and sought-after bride. We see this reflected beautifully in today's First Reading. When Israel breaks the covenant she is compared to an unfaithful spouse (see Jeremiah 2:20-36; 3:1-13). But God prom-ises to take her back, to "espouse" her to Him forever in an everlasting covenant (see Hosea 2:18-22).

That's why in today's Gospel, Jesus performs His first public "sign" at a wedding feast. Jesus is the divine Bridegroom (see John 3:29), calling us to His royal wedding feast (see Matthew 22:1-14).

By His New Covenant, He will become "one flesh" with all humanity in the Church (see Ephesians 5:21-33). By our Baptism, each of us has been betrothed to Christ as a bride to a Husband (see 2 Corinthians 11:2).

The new wine that Jesus pours out at today's feast is the gift of the Holy Spirit given to His bride and body, as today's Epistle says. This is the "salvation" announced to the "families of nations" in today's Psalm. A service of the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology www.SalvationHistory.com

You can now light a candle in the church and have it stay lit for almost a week for your prayer intentions, in thanksgiving to God or in memorial of a loved one!

These special votive candles have clear covers decorated with a cross design and can be placed inside one of the glass holders provided before the statues of Christ the King, Our Lady of Fatima, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Divine Mercy, Our Lady of Victory or Saint Anne, the Mother of Mary in the Upper Church only. Once lit, the candles will stay burning for your intention for about a week.

They are available for purchase from the parish office downstairs or from Carlos, our Sacristan, if you see him in the Upper Church.

If you wish, you can also purchase the candle and light for your home. The protective glass containers are also available for purchase.

The lighting of candles for your prayer intentions is a time-honored tradition in the Catholic Church that we are happy to provide at Our Lady of Victory and St. Andrew.

January 16, 2022 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION We have the wedding at Cana at the heart of today’s lit-urgy because this story of Jesus’ first miracle of water turned into wine was originally part of the Epiphany feast. Wedding celebrations always require some savvy plan-ning, and a people who have a talent for hospitality in the mix. The mother of Jesus has been recruited to deal with some of the details of the banquet, and when a very un-derstandable crisis arises, she does what she can to rescue the party. Anyone who has ever run out of ice, dessert, or table settings knows the stress! Slowly, the memory of Jesus Christ’s blessing of this marriage feast led the Church to form a way to bless mar-riages. A thousand years ago weddings migrated from the family home to the doors of the church, where the cele-bration was held in public view. From this practice came a prayer called the “Nuptial Blessing,” one of the most solemn prayers in our tradition. It is very much like the prayers by which baptismal water and chrism are conse-crated, the ordination prayer over a priest, and the Eucha-ristic Prayers over bread and wine. Four hundred fifty years ago, weddings moved inside the church building. All of this gives married couples good reason to celebrate this day as a mini-anniversary, especially with the clink-ing of glasses filled with good wine. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Peripheral neuropathy is a resultof damage to the nerves, oftencausing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling, and the mostdebilitating symptom, balanceproblems. Every part of thebody relies on blood via bloodvessels, for oxygen and nutrients.Without it, the body begins tolose function.

When these nerves begin to “die”they cause you to have balanceproblems, pain, burning, pinsand needle sensation, and othersymptoms.
