The rather unsubtle turbocharging has been ditched, replaced by a normally aspirated engine that revs to 8,250rpm and generates a monstrous 414bhp. A re-engineered four-wheel drive system deploys that power better than ever and more is routinely directed to the rear wheels, which promises to excise the stodgy understeer from the quattro drivetrain. Lower, wider and utilising aluminium body panels to keep weight down, the RS4 could well give BMW and Mercedes something very serious to think about.

“Audi have fi nally accepted that performance car buyers want subtlety and feel as well as big horsepower fi gures”

The engine is a fascinating piece of technology. Utilising Audi’s FSI direct injection system means that the cooling effect of the injected fuel has allowed for the compression ratio to be increased. The RS4 is the fi rst Audi to feature their ‘high-speed engine principle’ which means that rather than concentrating on low-down slugging power, the engine has the sort of wail more reminiscent of a competition car in the upper reaches of the rev range. Driving an old RS4 demonstrates the difference very effectively. With this car, all of the engine’s best work was done by 5,000rpm. The new RS4 is very different, revving like a Honda engine with the throttle pedal at the extent of its travel. Unlike Honda, Audi have managed to crack the thorny issue of endowing a vocal, high revving powerplant with adequate low down torque. Fully 90 per cent of the car’s maximum 430Nm torque fi gure is available at any point between 2250 and 7600rpm.

The end result is a car that will accelerate through 60mph in 4.6 seconds and on to 125mph in just 16.6s. A gentle electronic limiter draws a close on this headlong rush at 155mph. The gearing and power

suggests that without this limiter, 180mph would be fairly easily achievable. The lack of a turbocharger means that there isn’t the same savage punch the old RS4 could generate at very low revs, but Audi insiders claim the mid-range and top-end urge of the RS4 means that on the open road and track it is quite simply in a different league. To get some idea of the thrust available, consider the fact that at 251bhp per tonne, the RS4 contrives to make BMW’s M3, with 215bhp per tone, seem rather underpowered.

A new generation of quattro permanent four-wheel drive features an asymmetric/dynamic distribution of power and torque. In layman’s terms, this means that a Torsen (torque sensing) differential can direct up to 100 per cent of the engine power and torque to one axle whenever appropriate. More fl exible than before, this aids grip, agility and speed of response. The old 50:50 ‘normal’ torque split has been revised in favour of a more exciting 40:60 arrangement between front and rear axles, resulting in a car that feels more like a rear wheel drive sports car while still offering excellent traction. DRC (Dynamic Ride Control) features a central valve connected to all four dampers to offer excellent body control during acceleration, cornering and braking.

Despite all this work under the skin, many will still be sold on the 18-inch alloy wheels, the mean stance, the spoiler kit, the fl ared arches and racy interior detailing. Many of these same customers will never have a clue what DRC is, what their torque split is, or will even know that there’s a whole world to be explored beyond 5,000rpm. Their loss. Although honourable mention should be made of the RS2, TT and the S3, the latest RS4 looks primed to be the fi rst Audi since the iconic Quattro 20v to really grab the imagination of the performance car cognoscenti.

It was Henry Kissinger who fi rst noted that power is the ultimate aphrodisiac and this mantra has been subsequently embraced by

many motoring manufacturers desperate to one-up each other in the quest for horsepower. Some have come to understand that the side effects of huge power outputs can rather ruin the overall balance of a sports car while others have only recently accepted this wisdom. With the latest RS4, Audi hope to marry power and control in one irresistible package.

That’s the theory in any case. Sceptics will point to the fact that there’s still a heavy eight-cylinder engine sitting up front that will hurt handling subtlety, that the car adds the weight of an eleven stone passenger to that of a BMW M3, and that Audi’s ace card – their DSG gearbox – isn’t beefy enough to cope with the RS4’s power output. However, before you write the £49,985 RS4 off as just another ill-conceived autobahn mauler from Ingolstadt, it’s worth considering the following.

What does the engine in your car sound like? This might seem a bit of a daft question as, by and large, engine

sounds have largely been legislated out of existence. They’re muffl ed under layers of sound insulation, reduced to a background thrum that’s subservient to the sound of the wind or the rumble of rubber on tarmac. Unless, that is, you drive a Maserati. You see, Maserati drivers have a very good appreciation of what their engine sounds like and if the driver in question is at the wheel of a Maserati GranSport coupe, they can illustrate rather graphically by planting the throttle and sharing the good news with everybody within a half mile radius. You have to applaud their generosity as well as their taste in cars.

The GranSport is the latest in Maserati’s periodic attempts to keep Ferrari honest by offering a rather more focused version of their Coupe model. True anoraks may well remember the Assetto Corsa version of the 3200GT Coupe and the GranSport follows a similar philosophy with more power, less weight and an all round sharper driving experience. The unusual sill extensions worn by the GranSport aren’t the most elegant pieces of body addenda I’ve ever seen but they help give the car a more planted, pugnacious look than the standard Coupe. A subtle boot spoiler, a jutting front bumper assembly, a mesh front grille and some very attractive trident-themed nineteen inch wheels help the GranSport justify its £7,605 premium over the Coupe but the changes don’t stop with mere styling accessories.

With 400bhp on tap, power creeps up by 10bhp. The power comes courtesy of Maserati fi nessing the inlet manifold and cylinder head union, the introduction of more aggressive cams and a reduction in exhaust gas back pressure. The ride height has been dropped by 10mm and the improved aerodynamics see lift reduced by 12 per cent. Couple this with the standard fi tment of uprated Skyhook electronic dampers and that should spell a car that handles a fair degree better than the standard Coupe.

“This is a car that can make the hairs on the nape of your neck stand on end from half a mile away”.

Some may say that this isn’t a big ask. The Coupe is a diffi cult car to pigeonhole, being a fair bit more focused than cars like the Jaguar XKR but not anything like as track oriented as cars like the Porsche 911 GT3. The Maserati GranSport fi nds itself up against track day heroes like the GT3 and on that basis it’s tough to see it matching the all-conquering Porsche in terms of outright ability. Yes, the changes wrought do shave two seconds per lap off the Coupe’s time around Maserati’s sometime test facility at Varano but with the same springs and anti-roll bars as the standard car, its body control can’t hope to match ever more hardcore rivals.

The resculpted front seats of the GranSport offer a good deal more support and elsewhere around the cabin are a number of other refi nements. Some rather unusual interior fi nishes are offered. As well as the now rather clichŽd carbon fi bre trim inserts, there’s a material enigmatically dubbed ’High-Tech’ that’s quite unlike anything I’ve ever seen in a passenger vehicle.

Performance has taken a dolly step forward with the top speed inching up to 180mph although the sprint to 60mph remains pegged at 4.8 seconds. That 4.8 seconds will live with you for some time should you ever attempt to ape a Maserati test driver. Only one transmission is available for the GranSport and it’s a sequential manual six-speed paddle-shift system. With the transmission switched to Sport mode, the Maserati can swap cogs with astonishing brutality, smashing through the gears far quicker than a human hand could guide a gearstick around a gate.

As an all round package aimed at the sporting road driver and occasional track day participant, the Maserati GranSport gels very nicely. The changes to the suspension, the bigger rubber and the aerodynamic advantages make it an car to drive quickly, the chassis engendering more confi dence to explore the limits of its capabilities. And then there’s that intoxicating engine note. There are details that niggle but when a car can make the hairs on the nape of your neck stand on end from half a mile away, those issues are soon forgotten. Maserati has once more given us an object lesson in the meaning of exotica.

It is from the Trophy that the Cup borrows many of its suspension enhancements. The ‘Cup Chassis’ on which this car rides has been specially developed for the purpose of putting a big stupid grin on the face of persons ensconced behind the wheel. Extra support has been added to stiffen things up, reducing body roll when cornering, cutting back on nose dive under braking and toning down any speedboat style pitching when you put the hammer down. The front suspension has also been tinkered with to sharpen up the turn in and counteract any understeer. The standard Renaultsport Megane is an impressively composed handler for a powerful front-wheel-drive car but the Cup makes a signifi cantly lither proposition with more urgency injected into the driving experience.

“The Megane Renaultsport Cup is a very different car to its more relaxed big brother”

The front and rear brake discs are cross-drilled for improved performance in the wet and more effi cient cooling, while the diameter of the master cylinder has been increased to 25.4mm - a move which is said to deliver increased feel with less pedal travel. Perhaps more salient are changes wrought on the electronics designed to keep the Megane Cup on the straight and narrow. The ESP system can be switched off at speeds above 35mph so drivers can get closer to the car’s limits. It’ll still cut back in to try and save the situation if it thinks you’re in danger of coming a cropper but the tolerance threshold for this intervention has been raised with the aim of making the ESP less intrusive. The brake assist system has also been ditched on the Cup, further reducing the level of electronic interference. The only standard colour offered is Capsicum Red but if you don’t fancy that, there are a number of optional metallic fi nishes available.

The Cup also benefi ts from a new power-assisted steering system with a ‘tube-in-tube’ sliding joint for enhanced steering feel and special High Frequency

Curve Assist software which affects the way the steering reacts when cornering. When you turn that wheel, you’ll also be turning the 18” 12-spoke anthracite alloy ones that come with all Cup models. These are each 1.5kg lighter than the equivalent rolling stock found on the standard Megane 225 and they’re shod with specially designed Dunlop SP Sport Maxx tyres. Removing 1.5kg from the revolving weight is broadly equivalent to 4kg of normal sprung weight, so these wheels have the effect of shaving around 16kg off the Megane’s bulk. This helps in turn to shave 0.2 seconds off the car’s sprint to 60mph, notching off the benchmark in just 6.1 seconds.

The engine is obviously a key part of this and in the Megane Renaultsport Cup’s case, we’re talking about a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit with 225bhp. The power delivery is smooth with the 300Nm maximum swell of torque hitting the road at 3,000rpm and the full power arriving at 5,500rpm. More useful in assessing the car’s overall character is the fact that well over 250Nm of torque is being produced from as low as 2,000 all the way up to 6,000rpm. This creates a high level of fl exibility and coupled with the absence of any serious turbo lag, it means that there’s power instantly available in most gears at most engine speeds. The 32mph average fuel consumption is very impressive in a vehicle with this rarefi ed level of performance.

Only offered in three-door guise, the Megane Renaultsport 225 Cup makes a far more convincing value proposition than its big brother. What’s more, the changes made have transformed its character. Whereas the standard car felt like a mature A-road destroyer but lost its composure on anything more demanding, the Cup feels like Megane 225 Version 2, a car that has evolved in response to criticisms laid at the door of the original. Before putting your name down for a Ford Focus ST or a Vauxhall Astra VXR, it’s worth taking a test drive. You might just surprise yourself.

Renault are getting pretty good at this sort of thing. The Renaultsport Clio 182 Cup has proved to be the hot hatch hit of the

past year with track day paddocks stuffed to the gunwales with the things. Therefore, it was only a matter of time before Renault reprised the trick with their Megane 225. In offering much the same recipe of less weight and equipment but with a big slash in the asking price, this Megane could well become another sales winner.

Could is the operative word. Whereas the Clio is in a league of its own when it comes to performance per pound, there are a few other cars that the Megane Cup needs to muscle aside. The trouble it faces comes in the shape of Honda’s Civic Type-R, Vauxhall’s Astra VXR and Ford’s Focus ST - three extremely talented cars that appeal to those looking for scalpel-sharp front-wheel-drive hatches with some serious power.

to be fair, represents warm hatch performance. And OK, it feels a good deal quicker than that due to its beefy mid-range torque. Even so however, some owners have looked at the 2.0-litre Jaguar, looked at the range of diesel engines offered by Audi, BMW and Mercedes and then shopped German. With a few more strings to the X-Type’s bow, a good proportion of those customers would have stayed loyal to Jaguar. Perhaps now they still might.

The 2.2-litre engine generates 154bhp, a healthy 25bhp up on the 2.0-litre diesel car and not far shy of the power generated by the 2.0-litre petrol unit. The sprint to 60mph can be notched off in just 8.5 seconds and the 2.2-litre diesel will run on to a top speed of 137mph. This puts the Jaguar smack between cars like Audi’s A4 2.0TDI and BMW’s 320d in terms of power output and torque. Fuel economy is decent, if not quite class leading, with a combined fi gure quoted at 47.1mpg if you opt for the saloon body style and 45.6mpg for the marginally weightier estate model. Prices start at £22,995 for the saloon and £24,165 for the estate and there’s a choice of Sport, SE, Sovereign and Sport Premium trim levels.

“The X-TYPE with 2.2-litre diesel engine is now a very versatile package”

Jaguar claim the torque fi gure of the 2.2-litre diesel to be one of the highest amongst any four-cylinder diesel engine and it’s hard to argue with the fi gures. In normal use, the engine will crank out 360Nm of torque, but fl oor the throttle and the car’s electronics will allow for a 400Nm ‘overboost’ facility for extra rapid overtaking. To give an idea as to how muscular the X-TYPE 2.2D is, a Porsche 911 GT3 manages 385Nm of peak torque. This Jag then, is a car that can make mincemeat of middle lane dawdlers. New drive shafts have been

designed for the 2.2-litre engine that can handle this sort of torque, a process which has also necessitated the development of sinter-forged connecting rods to help cut reciprocating weight and therefore vibration.

If Jaguar want to sell to both private and business customers, then compliance with this legislation is vitally important. Diesel-engined cars that conform to ‘Euro IV’ emissions regulations are looked upon favourably by the Treasury – and this one is no exception. A potential reduction in owners’ annual company car tax bills of up to 3% is promised.

Though the X-TYPE looks ostensibly similar to the way it was when originally launched, it has in fact changed quite a lot in recent years. For a start, Jaguar have redesigned the front end of the car. The Bolt-On Front End structure replaces the welded on steel crossbeam with a bolt-on aluminium cross member. This not only saves 3.9kg of weight but also signifi cantly reduces repair costs. Plus a number of detail changes such as repositioning the boot release button and adding clear side repeaters are evident. Higher quality materials, more Alpine speakers and a number of options for the seating are now available as well as steering wheel mounted stereo controls for SE and Sport versions. A revised steering wheel and instrument cluster are also fi tted, as well as an ice alert light and twin front cupholders.

We would have loved to see the 2.7-litre V6 diesel used by the S-TYPE under the bonnet of this baby Jaguar but it doesn’t fi t. The 2.2-litre powerplant which does is by no means unwelcome. It’s quick and smooth but struggles to excel against some tough competition. This engine probably won’t sway your decision, but if you were already looking at an X-TYPE, this is the engine of choice.

Now that the concept of a diesel-engined Jaguar is no longer greeted by raised eyebrows, the marque has launched an

engine that can really stretch the capabilities of the X-TYPE chassis. While the 2.0-litre engine is a great all-rounder, those looking for a little more pep and punch should seriously consider spending a little extra to land the 2.2-litre powerplant.

Here’s why. Buy a Jaguar and you tend to expect certain criteria whether or not you’re pouring petrol or diesel down its neck. Speed, refi nement and agility are three key reasons why people choose a Jag and although the 2.0-litre diesel scores superbly in terms of refi nement and agility, it’s not hugely quick. Yes, it’ll accelerate to 60mph in 9.5 seconds which

Two distinctly different body styles are available and Citroen have taken a leaf out of Vauxhall’s book in their product development plans. By introducing plenty of MPV-style models, Vauxhall left themselves free to design sportier and more dynamic versions of their ‘regular’ cars. Citroen have followed suit and, divested of the need to seat seven people and their 1.5-litre bottles of pop, the C4 looks extremely svelte, both in fi ve-door hatchback form and three-door Coupe format.

There’s an element of Ford Focus to the rear windowline but the C4 is more extreme still, even the hatchback boasting a coupe-like silhouette. Early shots of a C4 rally car mockup left many with moistened palms and the sporty VTS version of the Coupe will be the model for them. With big alloys and spoilers, this car should be a knockout in showrooms throughout the land. Citroen claim class-leading aerodynamics, the drag coeffi cent of just 0.28 paying dividends not only in performance and economy but also in keeping the all-important CO2 emissions in check.

This being Citroen, we can take a whole host of innovations for granted and the C4 doesn’t come up short. An involuntary lane departure warning system has been developed that aims to prevent drivers from losing concentration or dozing off at the wheel. Moving dual function Xenon headlamps offer improved lighting when cornering and provide a neat historical throwback to the DS model.

“The dashboard has overtones of a toned-down Fiat Multipla...”

No car in this class can shift serious numbers unless it scores well on the safety front and Citroen has acheived a full set of stars in the EuroNCAP safety tests. The multi-function steering wheel houses a whole host of the controls from the centre console, ensuring that the driver is in touch with the control of the vehicle at all times. Despite the multitude of functions marshalled by the tiller, there’s still room for an airbag that Citroen claims offers better protection

than any of their prior designs.

Building in features more often seen on luxury cars is an ongoing theme, the C4 featuring laminated side window glass. Not only does this aid safety in the result of an accident, it also provides enhanced protection against crime and even boosts the cabin’s acoustic qualities. Manufacturers of car stereos have long lamented the fact that with a high proportion of echoing surfaces, the car’s interior is one of the most acoustically challenging environments in which to create great sounding music reproduction. It has been found that the insulating layer of clear plastic inside a laminated windscreen produced less acoustic scatter than the harsher echoes that rebounded off a more brittle toughened screen.

The innovations don’t stop there. The C4 even features a scented air freshener built into the dashboard to prolong that fantastic new car smell. One of the nicer detail touches is a translucent instrument cluster that adjusts to ambient light levels, giving a clear readout whatever the light conditions. Many cars offer LCD screens that are virtually impossible to read in daylight and if you switch your headlamps on so that other cars can see you coming, the problem can get worse. Thankfully Citroen have spent some time and money coming up with a solution.

The trim levels are split 50/50 between comfort and sportiness. Those valuing the fi ner things in life can select from, in ascending order, LX, SX and Exclusive while sports fans will go for VT, VTR or VTS. The VTR Plus level provides something of the best of both worlds. There’s a wide range of powerplants, most of which meet Euro IV emissions standards, offering a broad range of performance – from 90 to 180bhp for the petrol engines and 92 to 138bhp for diesels. There is a degree of carry over from the existing Xsara line up but motive force was never a Xsara Achilles heel. Buyers seeking the convenience of an automatic can specify a 5-speed unit with the 1.6 or 2.0-litre petrol engines in SX or Exclusive trim.

Is all of this enough to steal meaningful sales from cars like the Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra? The pricing seems right and if Citroen’s recent track record is anything to go by, there will be all manner of tempting deals on the table. The C3 and the C2 have helped modernise Citroen’s reputation. Now the

C4 hopes to claim some signifi cant payback.

P L A S T I Q U E E X P L O S I V E

Try as I might, I can’t quite put my fi nger on the exact moment the Citroen Xsara started feeling old. I think it was some time

in early 2002, although it’s tough to tell. Since that time, Citroen’s dealers have had a tough task shifting respectable numbers, coming up with ever more ingenious ways of parting people with their cash. With the introduction of the C4, things should be much easier. This car, after all, instantly makes the Xsara appear like something you’d need to carbon date rather than drive. If looks count for anything, the C4 is a winner right out of the blocks.

I t’s been a long time coming but the wait looks to be worth it. While Volkswagen’s Golf has been ruling the roost, engineers

at Vauxhall have been putting the fi nishing touches to a car that looks set to wield a decisive horsepower advantage against Wolfsburg’s fi nest. With no less than 240bhp on tap, Vauxhall’s Astra VXR looks like the hottest hatch ticket it’s currently possible to buy.

Yes, we’ve seen V6 hatches that theoretically have more power but they’re heavier and of course much more expensive. What’s more, it’s a fair bet that none of them will be able to keep pace with the Astra VXR down a typically bumpy British country road. Think instead of the Astra VXR as a car more in the mould of a Honda Civic Type-R albeit with another 40bhp to call upon.

Performance really is searing, with 60mph being dispatched in around six seconds. Traction off the line is surprisingly good for a car with a powerful and lightweight engine driving the front wheels and only in damp conditions does the traction control system get a good workout. Once on the move, there’s less in the way of torque steer than is present in, say, a Ford Focus RS and despite the fi rm suspension and optional 19-inch alloys that most will choose, the ride is reasonably malleable. It’s certainly a good deal more compliant than a Peugeot 206 GTi 180. Comparisons such as these are necessary in order to provide a frame of reference for a car that moves the goalposts quite dramatically. This sort of power from a hatch costing £18,995 requires some mental readjustment. Even SEAT’s 225bhp Leon Cupra R was never quite this serious.

From the outside, the Astra VXR is distinguished by 18-inch alloys (19-inch optional), a body-coloured V-grille, ground- hugging side skirts, a rear spoiler and revised bumper assemblies, along with neat detail touches such as its Arden Blue front and rear brake callipers and VXR badges. Inside, there are Recaro seats, revised instruments incorporating VXR logos, a three-spoke sports steering wheel, carbon-effect inserts on the doors and facia and an

alloy gearknob, also with VXR detailing. “240bhp is serious power by hot hatch standards”

Final production tweaks to the suspension were carried out by Lotus and there’s little to criticise with the meaty steering. Nevertheless, the Astra VXR is an easy car to position accurately through a corner and honing the line with the use of the accelerator pedal is simplicity itself. Customer cars get a full Brembo brake package that should offer devastating stopping power.

It all harks back to the mighty Vauxhall Astra GTE 16v of 1989. This retailed for £14,127 and boasted 156bhp at a time when most hot hatch fans had to either satisfy themselves with 132bhp of Escort RS Turbo, 130bhp of Peugeot 309GTi or139bhp of Golf GTi 16v. In short, the Astra’s pace revolutionised the market, its light weight ensuring that it could notch 60mph in less than seven seconds, until that time the preserve of exotics like the Lancia Delta HF Integrale.

The Astra chassis is one of the best available in its class and despite featuring a supposedly inferior torsion beam rear suspension set up, the ride is supple and lateral grip is excellent. Only when cornering hard over choppier sections of tarmac does the rear suspension not feel quite as slick as the multi link layout of a Golf or a Focus, but there are benefi ts in terms of packaging. Cornering roll is minimal, which encourages you to throw the car into corners with greater gusto. You can do so later too thanks to meaty brakes which are so powerful you’ll thrill at their bite. Watch other road users apply their brakes and then sail past them, relying on the VXR’s astonishing powers of retardation.

Vauxhall’s Astra VXR has the powerplant, the looks and the capability to become a very big hit indeed and the staff at Vauxhall have convinced us that the VXR badge is something to be taken seriously. Although Ford’s Focus ST and the all-new Honda Civic Type-R will now have a clear target to aim at, something tells me that Vauxhall aren’t unduly worried.

Pablo Picasso was a man known for his originality on canvas. Perhaps then, he would have appreciated the Citroen mini-

MPV people carrier that bears his name.

Not that the concept behind this car is particularly new. The idea of a miniature people carrier has been around since Renault introduced their Scenic back in 1996, a concept since copied by a clutch of imitators. None of these, however, bettered the Renault where it really mattered: in the clever ‘lifestyle’ detailing that made the Scenic such a hit with small families.

With the Picasso, Citroen has addressed this issue head-on, refusing to be distracted by considerations like extra seats or wild and wacky styling. The result - in interior terms at least - is arguably the most original car of its kind yet produced.

You realise this as soon as you sit behind the wheel and look – into nothing. There are no dials – just a digital display to your left in the centre of the dashboard, part of which can be turned off to avoid distraction at night. You realise it on discovering that the gear lever sprouts from the dashboard, leaving the fl oor clear for you to walk through to the back seats. You realise it when you open the boot to fi nd a fold-out trolley that avoids the need to decant the weekly shop in the supermarket carpark. “The interior is one of the most original of its kind...”.

Somebody at Citroen has thought long and hard about what families really want. Research suggests that hardly any buyers in this sector have more than three children - so fi ve seats were deemed perfectly adequate. Roadburning performance was found to be equally unnecessary, so the fi ve mainstream Xsara hatchback engines 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0-litre petrol units plus a 90bhp HDI diesel) and, the latest addition, a 110bhp 1.6HDI are deemed to be quite suffi cient.

The diesels account for the majority of Picasso sales, mainly due to the fact that neither of the

thirstier petrol engines offers anything much better in terms of performance or even refi nement. Visits to the fi lling station will become so rare, that you might forget where the Picasso’s fuel fi ller cap is.

In fact, this hi-tech common rail diesel is the fi nest unit of its kind. It loses out to rivals in terms of sheer horsepower but still betters them both at the pumps and in terms of torque (pulling power from low speeds). On the road, the ride is intentionally biased towards comfort but, cornering is well controlled. Despite the lack of a rev counter, you could conceivably enjoy driving this car – not a comment applicable to many MPVs.

As you’d expect, the rear seats fold, collapse forward or can be removed completely (as long as you can fi nd somewhere to leave them). Collapse the centre seat and you create a multi-function work or play area that includes a clipboard-style paper holder.

There are rear picnic tables, under-fl oor storage compartments, a drawer under the front passenger seat, a huge glovebox and clever door pockets moulded to take cans, cups or even huge 1.5-litre bottles.

Prices of course, mimic those of obvious Scenic-class mini-MPV rivals – between £13,395 and £17,295, depending on your choice of petrol or diesel engine and LX, Desire or Exclusive trim.

In summary, the Picasso has proved a popular addition to the growing ranks of small but spacious people carriers. As long as, like most families, your tribe really don’t need seven seats (or even six), the Citroen is diffi cult to ignore, offering as it does so much in terms of original interior thought. It’s not hard to see cars like this almost completely replacing conventional family hatchbacks - which could cause an interesting dilemma across the motor industry. Perhaps the designers have been too clever for their own good.
