OUR PASTOR’S DESK today is written by Father Robert Marchwiany, our new Associate Pastor. Dear Parishioners, My name is Fr. Robert Marchwiany and I am delighted that soon I will be the Associate Pastor at Our Lady of the Woods. I came originally from Poland to the United States in 1999. That was the year when I was transferring from my Polish seminary of the Archdiocese of Przemysl (SE corner of Poland) to the Archdiocese of Chicago. More particularly, in 1999 together with the other nine seminarians from Poland, we joined the “Abramowicz House” preparatory program that was supposed to prepare us back then for studies at the Mundelein Seminary and most importantly, the dream was to be ordained to become a priest of this great Archdiocese to serve God and His people! I was ordained by Cardinal George on May 24th, 2003. My first assignment was at St. Louise de Marillac in LaGrange Park, IL. My second assignment took me to the St. Albert the Great in Burbank, IL. It was an active parish and many good things were happening there during my five years of service. I then served as Associate pastor at St. Luke in River Forest. In 2012 I was named pastor of St Florian Parish in the Hegewish neighborhood of Chicago. I was there for six years until the merger of Saint Florian, Saint Columba, and Mother of God parishes as Christ our Light Parish, under the RENEW MY CHURCH efforts. This experience is perhaps one of the strongest in my priestly history so far. That was for me an extremely hard place to manage and keep. We had done all to make things better for St. Florian.

Saint Florian was one of the older parishes in the Archdiocese. St. Florian was over one hundred years with many needs when I arrived including infrastructure problems, lack of funds in the savings, minimal collections and a shrinking number of parishioners. Those were my first impressions of that place. But in time, some things got better. Lots of supporting events were implemented to help manage things financially. Church and rectory walls and roof were fixed very quickly with help of those events. Some major structural and emotional crisis was taken care of very quickly at the beginning of that assignment, but some difficult moments were part of that place from time to time. I never had a dull day in that place from the time when I went there until my last on those grounds. The School eventually was closed at the request of the school parents. It is impossible to write all about this wonderful parish church in a short message but I feet at peace when I think about that place. It has preserved the meaning that had been with it for many generations. It has a different name now, but the same Christ lives there and is available in the form of the Eucharist. St. Hugh in Lyons was my next pastorship. Only about 350 people attended Sunday Mass and this was a great challenge. We worked to improve those numbers and gradually the increases in parishioners and funds were visible to the point that we had started to hope for a stronger future. Again, the many events, creativity and our faith were helping to plan that future. Before the COVID pandemic, St. Hugh, Mater Christi and St. Mary in North Riverside were already in the Renew My Church program. The outcome of that program for St. Hugh is the new parish called St. Paul VI parish. That new parish includes St. Mary, Mater Christi operating campuses where St. Hugh ceases Mass celebrations once the new parish starts on July 1st, 2021. St. Hugh shares the pain of many churches in the Chicago Archdiocese that had been found in the same position. Perhaps with pastors of those closing or combined parishes I found myself wondering about my role during this exceedingly difficult time. I hope that I was helpful to the people of St. Hugh who are making their decision about joining a new parish. This time of mergers and COVID has felt like a long Good Friday that has taken many months. As I leave Saint Hugh’s I think that the people are ready to finally find their moment where a true spirit of the Resurrection Sunday will finally be celebrated in any of their new parish. I now look forward to the future as a priest of Our Lady of the Woods Parish. I believe that all is given to us as a gift from God. I am open to accept the gift of the future as I accepted it in the past. I have met some of you, but I am excited to finally meet all of you! A special thanks to Fr. Mike and the staff for the very warm welcome at the beginning. Yours in Christ,

Fr. Robert P. Marchwiany
