2 Weekend of April 21 & 22, 2018
From the Pastor’s Desk... The Best Easter Gift . . . that I received during Easter week was not even candy. Hard to believe! As you know, I enjoy reading bulletins from other par-ishes but, during Easter week, I received two bulletins not just from other parishes but photo static copies of bulletins from another century! Saint Bernard Parish in the Mount Lebanon section of Pittsburgh is celebrat-
ing their 100th anniversary and, as part of their anni-versary celebration they have reprinted copies of old bulletins. The two that I received were from April 2, 1944 and March 17, 1946. In 1944, April 2 was Palm Sunday so the services for Holy Week were included in that bulletin. Needless to say, everything was dif-ferent nearly 75 years ago. There is a tendency on the part of some people to say, “Things were better back then”, while other people would say equally forcefully, “Things are better now.” I certainly have family and friends on both sides of that argument. The only thing that can be said for sure is that the life of the parish is very different in 2018 than it was in the 1940’s. Unless you are interested in useless bits of historical knowledge – as I so deeply am – you proba-bly don’t need to read 70 year-old bulletins, but it made me very happy and made my Easter week in a way that even a chocolate egg could not have!! How’s that for surprising?? Padre Rafael Fuentes is an old friend of Saint Charles Borromeo Parish, well, I guess I am sup-posed to say, Padre Rafael Fuentes is a longtime friend of Saint Charles Borromeo Parish, I don’t want to imply that he is old. He has visited us numerous times and has been always grateful for the support that he receives. He is asking our help for a new pro-ject. Many years ago now, Padre Rafael established a school in El Salvador. Parishioners of Saint Charles Borromeo have been very generous in providing tui-tion assistance. One of the problems that the school is now facing is that too many of the young people live too far from the school for them to travel home for lunch and they are too poor to bring a lunch with them. Their families have barely enough to provide dinner for the entire family. That is why Padre Rafael
is asking our support in helping provide lunch money. The Lunch Money Project is our attempt to help young people stay healthy while getting their education. There is a tree, right next to the entrance to the Social Hall, and on this tree there are brown lunch bags. Take one of the lunch bags and right on the bag are directions for donating to the Lunch Money Project. Once you have made your donation, either return the bag in the collection basket or drop it off at the parish office. The Lunch Money Project will run until Sunday, May 6. This is a very direct way to make a difference in the life of a young person who is working hard to improve their situation in life and help boost a country that has a history of back-breaking poverty and horrible violence. Their educations are an im-portant “step-up” and their education requires some assistance. Join in Saint Charles Borromeo Lunch Money Project and help the young people of Chalat-enango, El Salvador. Your donation will be greatly appreciated. For some of us, it has been a long, long time since we carried one of those brown lunch bags. This is a good time to get one again, right from the tree in the entrance of the church! I had the extreme pleasure this week of attending the Mass, celebrated by Bishop George Murry, SJ, honoring the young people of the Diocese of Youngs-town who were receiving the Eagle of the Cross Award, the highest award for high school students bestowed by the Diocese of Youngstown. Saint Charles Borromeo Parish had not one, not two, but three young men who were recipients this year at the ceremony. Congratulations go out to Brady Bizon, Clark Hergenrother, and Luke Hetzel who were hon-ored this past Wednesday at the Eagle of the Cross Ceremony. It is quite an honor for these three young men, for their families and for the parish, as well. It is a well-deserved honor for them and a great reflection upon the people of Saint Charles Borromeo Parish, as well. Speaking of congratulations, further congratula-tions go out to all of the second grade students of Saint Charles School and Saint Charles CCD who received First Eucharist this weekend. They all did a great job. And further congratulations to Penelope Rose Miladore, to her parents and her godparents on the occasion of her baptism here at Saint Charles Borro-meo this past weekend. Best wishes to everyone . . .

ONE EXTRA MASS A MONTH CLUB 2018 WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS
Today the Church throughout the world prays for voca-tions. Please make a special effort to ask the Lord for more vocations to the priesthood and religious life.
• Pray for the priests who have ministered to you throughout your life, both living and dead.
• Keep our parish priests in your prayers throughout the week. • Encourage your children, grandchildren, or other young peo-
ple to consider a vocation as a priest or religious brother or sister.
• Pray a rosary for more young men and women in our diocese to respond to God’s call.
God our Father, Send workers into Your great harvest so that the Gospel is preached, the poor are served with love, the suffering are comforted, and Your people are strengthened by the sacraments. Amen. The “One Extra Mass A Month Club” is a program sponsored by Youngstown Vocations Support Society. Members attend mass one extra day of the month to pray for an increase in min-isterial vocations. If you would like to join other St. Charles parishioners who are currently praying for vocations, please contact Rosey Wilson at [email protected] or 330-726-9320 with the date that you choose to pray for this intention.

Can you pull it close and feel its comfort? You can if it comes as a gift in the form of a Prayer Shawl. Prayer Shawls are simple gifts
of grace from God that are prayerfully and lovingly stitched by volunteers of St. Charles Graceful Hands and prayed over as a reminder that God’s promise is always
with us. Shawls can be useful for: those undergoing medical procedures; as a comfort after a loss or in times of stress; during bereavement; or for prayer or medita-
tion. Prayer Shawls are available to anyone free of charge. Please call the parish office to reserve one or
stop in to pick one up.

GETTING READY Next week, I will be having my knee replacement surgery; I’m a little worried as this will my first major operation since having my tonsils out in second grade, and at the same time, I’m excited that this knee will soon be operating normally soon. I thought I was prepared but, wow, was I mistaken! I did not realize how much time and effort there was in preparing for this big day. I needed appointments with all three of my doctors (to clear me for surgery) and my dentist as well (which entailed another appointment to take care of two minor problems). The house has to be ‘fall-proof’ before surgery (no loose rugs, safety bars in bathroom and shower). Have to attend a ‘mandatory’ class before the surgery and then make arrangements for post-op therapy. All this work for a one-hour operation. It seems like a lot to get ready but, it has to be done if we want everything to go safely and smoothly; can’t wait till the last minute. Now, think about a big day that is coming in all our lives, the day we receive our (hopefully) eternal reward. We may not think much about it as it something we real-ly don’t look forward to experiencing, but there is much we have to do here and now to get ready for that day. It’s not just enough to know it’s coming, it’s not just enough to say prayers and attend masses. It involves examining everything in our lives and making sure all is in order here and now instead of rushing at the last minute. We need to live everyday as if this is the day of that big move to eternity. Are you getting ready now? Clearin’ the table.
We are called to be holy by living our lives with love and by bearing witness in every-
thing we do. #GaudeteetExsultate -Pope Francis @Pontifex via Twitter

STEWARDSHIP OUR TIME, OUR TALENT, & OUR TREASURE
Stewardship Thought of the Week: “I am the good shepherd...and I lay down my life for the sheep…and they will heed my voice.” - JOHN 10:14-16
When you pray, do you only ask Jesus for the things that you want? Do you ever ask Him what He wants from you? How do you listen for His response? Usually, the answer is in “quiet whispers”, so take time every day, in silence, to actively listen for His response.

PNARDS LUNCH MONEY PROJECT The lunch money project continues this weekend and runs through May 6. If you would like to participate, please take a lunch bag from the tree near the Social Justice bulletin board. All money collected will go toward lunches for 25 students at Padre Nicolas Antonio Rodriguez Diocesan
School (PNARDS) in El Salvador, which Fr. Rafael Fuentes founded. (Fr. Rafael has visited St. Charles several times.) These students are some of the poorest in the school and live too far away to go home for lunch. For more information about the school, visit elsalvadormissions.org
THANK YOU! This bulletin is furnished to the Parish without charge. The advertisements that appear, completely defray the
costs. Please patronize these sponsors located in the back of the bulletin. Thank them for supporting our Parish. Our sponsor this week is Joseph M. Barak, Doctor of Podiatric Medicine.
