June 12, 2020 My Dear People of St. Ann Parish, Fr. Greg, Seminarian Kevin and I are all well and are continuing our prayers for you each day. We ask God daily to keep all of you and those closest to you safe and healthy. Each day we pray together Morning and Evening Prayer from the Divine Office, the Holy Rosary and of course the daily offering of the Holy Mass. The big news this week is the announcement that our churches will re-open on Tuesday, June 16. The last day we had a public Mass was March 16 and the first public Mass will be exactly three months later. It has been a long and hard 3 months being away from the Sacraments, we pray that God will have seen your suffering and will reward all of you for your patience and understanding. With the return of public Masses, the livestreaming of weekday Masses will end. Sunday Mass will continue to be livestreamed for those who are unable to attend Mass in person, however watching on TV does not replace coming to Mass when it is available and there are no extenuating circumstances. With all my heart, I want to thank Kevin Dunn for his faithfulness to making the Mass available for these past three months. Every morning he was here, set up everything and then did all the necessary work behind the scenes. Kevin, we have been well served by you. May God reward you for all your efforts to bring the gift of Mass to the People of God. Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. will be our first public Mass and Saturday, June 20 at 5:00 p.m. will be our first public Sunday Mass. Below there is a list of protocols that will need to be followed when you come to Mass. I suggest you try to arrive early in order to be able to do all that is required before coming into the church. Once Mass begins, the doors will be closed, and you will need to wait for the next Mass. Please note, before coming to Mass you should take your temperature. If you have a fever or are not well, please remain home. It is strongly recommended that you will wear a mask while in the church. Please bring one with you. When you enter the church, we will always and only go in by the side aisles and out by the center aisle. Our new Health and Safety Committee will be present to assist you. I am truly looking forward to being able to celebrate Mass with you. This Sunday is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, Corpus Christi. The day we give great attention and honour to the most wonderful gift of the Holy Eucharist. Remember to leave extra time for Mass this Sunday, since we will have a procession with the Holy Eucharist at the end of Mass. This coming Friday is the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and the world day of prayer for the sanctification of the clergy. Pray that the Heart of Jesus will pour out His abundant mercy on all of us and pray that our Deacons, Priests and Bishops may truly be holy men after the heart of Jesus. This week is the week we have been waiting for and praying for the past 3 months, the opening of our churches and the public celebration of the Holy Mass. May we find joy and grace in the return to the Sacraments. Fr. Greg and I look forward to seeing all of you back in our newly renovated St. Ann Church. For those who feel unwell or not yet comfortable with being in public places, the dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass is still in effect. Praying that you and those you love will remain safe and will use this time to draw closer to Jesus who is truly present in the Holy Eucharist. Stay safe and stay healthy. St. Ann, pray for us. My Dear People of St. Ann Parish,

Fr. Greg, Seminarian Kevin and I are all well and are continuing our prayers for you each

day. We ask God daily to keep all of you and those closest to you safe and healthy. Each

day we pray together Morning and Evening Prayer from the Divine Office, the Holy Rosary

and of course the daily offering of the Holy Mass.

The big news this week is the announcement that our churches will re-open on Tuesday, June 16. The last day

we had a public Mass was March 16 and the first public Mass will be exactly three months later. It has been a

long and hard 3 months being away from the Sacraments, we pray that God will have seen your suffering and

will reward all of you for your patience and understanding.

With the return of public Masses, the livestreaming of weekday Masses will end. Sunday Mass will continue to

be livestreamed for those who are unable to attend Mass in person, however watching on TV does not replace

CORPUS CHRISTI

The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ As Catholics, we believe that the Holy Eucharist is the source and

summit of our Faith. All we do comes from and leads us back to the

Holy Eucharist. For us, the Eucharist is not a sign, symbol, or

representation of Jesus, but really and truly Jesus Himself, Body,

Blood, Soul and Divinity. At the Last Supper, Jesus took bread,

broke it, and gave it to His Disciples saying, “this is my Body.” Then taking a cup of wine, He said “this is

my Blood.” Bread and wine become Jesus’ Body and Blood for us. Giving this same power to change

bread and wine into His very Self, Jesus assured He would be present to His holy people until the end of

time. In the celebration of Holy Mass, through the ministry of the Priest, we make present the saving Death

and Resurrection of Jesus. In John’s Gospel, chapter 6, Jesus tells us, “Unless you eat my flesh and drink

my Blood, you have no life within you.” In Holy Communion we fulfill the Lord’s command to eat His

Flesh and Drink His Blood since the Communion Host contains the whole Jesus: Body, Blood, Soul, and

Divinity. I have often told our school children I only want them to remember seven words from everything

I have ever told them: “The Eucharist is Jesus, Jesus is God.” If we can remember these seven words, we

will go a long way in understanding and growing in love for the Body and Blood of Christ.

WORK IN THE CHURCH

THANKS TO YOUR GENEROSITY TO THE

ONE HEART, ONE SOUL CAMPAIGN The work in the church is coming to an end. Your amazing generosity

to the One Heart, One Soul Campaign, and the many hours of volunteer

work by our Maintenance Committee and other volunteers has made all

this work possible. Many, many thanks to all who helped with the

cleaning this past Monday and especially to the ladies who came back

Tuesday to finish cleaning the pews. I am sure we will need to do it again in a couple of weeks as the

dust in the air continues to settle. God’s providence is amazing, allowing us to finish all this work just

days before our church re-opens for the public celebration of the Sacraments. I truly hope you will

enjoy all the amazing work that has gone on over the past few months.

This Sunday is the

Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ better known by its Latin name – Corpus Christi

A procession with the Holy Eucharist and Benediction will follow the Sunday Mass.

Please be sure to leave yourself extra time for the Sunday morning Mass.

Confession Anyone? With the churches opening, we will again have regularly scheduled confessions.

Confessions will be heard on Tuesdays from 6 - 6:45 p.m. and Saturdays from 8

- 8:45 a.m. and 4 - 4:45 p.m. Since the confessional is not large enough to

maintain proper social distancing, confessions will be heard in the Lady Chapel

(crying room). Please be sure to maintain a proper distance while waiting in line. If you prefer, you are still free

to call the parish office and set up an appointment for confession. Whether coming to the regular scheduled

time or at another appointed time, it is necessary for you to wear a mask during your confession. If waiting in

line, a mask should also be worn at this time. Anonymity really is not possible at this time.

Stacking Chair Giveaway Thanks to the generosity of the Prayer Shawl Ministry and the Fourth Degree

Knights of Columbus, the parish has purchased 200 new chairs for use in the

St. Ann Hall, Lady Chapel and Choir Loft. Thank you for your kind donation to

make this possible. With the purchase of these new chairs, we have about

150 old stacking chairs to give away. If you would like some of these chairs,

please call the parish office to arrange a time to come and get them. It will

be on a first come first serve basis. Limit of 10 per family for first week.

The Parish Office is closed until at least June 30th.

Pope Francis' Prayer to Our Lady, Health of the Sick O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick. At the foot of the Cross you participated in Jesus’ pain, with steadfast faith. You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need. We are certain that you will provide, so that, as you did at Cana of Galilee, joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the Father’s will and to do what Jesus tells us: He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and bore our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen. We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test – and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and Blessed Virgin. Amen.

CHURCHES RE-OPEN ON TUESDAY

On Tuesday, June 9th, we received notice from the Bishop’s Office that all the Catholic Churches in the Diocese of Hamilton will re-open on Tuesday, June 16th. After almost exactly 3 months, we will once again be able to attend Mass, celebrate the Sacraments of Penance, Baptism, Marriage and have Funeral Masses in the church. This opening of the churches is not a return to the way it was at the beginning of March. There are a number of restrictions in place. All coming into the church will need to follow these restrictions, otherwise admittance to the church will be denied. I understand that some of these may seem difficult, but I ask for your patience and understanding. We want to be able to celebrate the Sacraments, but we also want to keep each other safe. So please, be patient, be understanding and if possible, even be Christian when coming to church. Below you will find the complete text from the Bishop. Here is a summary:

• All people should take their temperature before coming to church. If you have a fever, cough or cold, please stay home.

• All people, other than the Priests and the Lector or Cantor, while performing their ministry, are requested to wear a mask. It may be disposable or re-useable.

• Proper social distancing must be maintained. This means only 1 out of 3 pews may be used. So, your spot may not be available. Please exercise your great effort and willpower and choose a new spot.

• Unless you live in the same house, you must be 2 meters away from other parishioners.

• When you enter the church and when you leave the church, our health and safety committee will be at the doors to offer you hand sanitizer.

• Entrance to the church and exit from the church will only be allowed through the Wilson Street doors. The other doors will remain locked.

• Only 130 people will be permitted to be present for Mass. Not having a better plan, it will be on a first come basis. Once 130 have entered the church, the doors will be closed and others arriving will be invited to return for another Mass.

• There will no longer be hymn books or any pamphlets available in the church. If you don’t remember the words, you are invited to hum along.

• There will be no collection taken during the Mass nor an Offertory procession with the gifts. At the doors of the church, there will be a basket for your offering. Please place your gift in the basket either on the way in or out of the church. The bread and wine will already be on the Altar before Mass begins.

• The Sign of Peace will no longer be a shaking of hands, but rather a simple bow to your neighbour is the new way.

• For the reception of Holy Communion, you will be directed forward by our health and safety crew, please wait for their directions. When the person ahead of you is receiving Holy Communion, you will remove your mask by the ear straps, careful not to touch the moist part of your mask. Holy Communion will only be given in the hand. Once you receive Communion, step slightly to the side, put the Sacred Host in your mouth and then re-cover your mouth and nose with your mask. Then return to your seat.

• After Mass is over, the Priests will not greet you at the doors, and you are asked to not congregate inside or outside the church. As you leave, you will again be offered a squirt of hand sanitizer.

• All pews and doors will be sanitized after each Mass.

• Washrooms will only be available when absolutely necessary. Only one person at a time may be in the washroom unless you live in the same house. Only the washrooms by the parish hall will be available. The small washroom by the Wilson Street doors will no longer be accessible.

Regarding Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals: These celebrations are once again available in the church. The restrictions above will also apply to these celebrations. The main difference is these celebrations are limited to 10 people only (including the Priest). I am sorry, but no exceptions to this number

will be allowed, until the government changes the number. I thank you in advance for your cooperation and patience.

Use of the Church’s Meeting Rooms and Parish Groups: After consultation with our Parish’s Pastoral Team, we have decided that no Parish Committees or

Organizations will be permitted to resume meetings at this time. The Parish Meeting Rooms, Hall,

and Kitchen will not be available for use by Parish or outside groups until further notice.

I know this seems like a lot. Again, I ask for your patience, understanding and cooperation. By following these guidelines all together, we will ensure our churches remain open and the Sacraments remain available to us. For any who feel unwell or that coming is unsafe, the dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass continues to be in place.

LOOKING FOR A COUPLE OF ITEMS

In order to assist us with the necessary cleaning and

disinfecting that will be required, we are looking for

empty spray bottles with the spray head and empty

pump heads and their attached bottle (i.e. old pumps

and bottles for soap). If you have any of these two

types of bottles and heads laying around and are

willing to part with them, please bring them to the

church over the next few days. A container will be

set up outside the Wilson Street Doors, please place them in this container.

Many thanks for your help.

SOLEMNITY OF THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS

THE MEMORIAL OF THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY

DAY OF PRAYER FOR THE SANCTIFICATIN OF THE CLERGY

Two wonderful Feasts occur this week. On Friday, the Church celebrates the

Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and the next day, Saturday, we

celebrate the memorial of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Both of these

Feasts remind us of how much we are loved. The hearts of Jesus and Mary

pound for humanity so strongly that their bodies cannot contain those hearts.

Even though their hearts are surrounded by a crown of thorns which is

pierced with each beat, they still love us beyond measure. The Solemnity of

the Sacred Heart is also the world day of prayer for the Sanctification of the

Clergy. Pray that we may have holy Priests to guide us to the hearts of Jesus

and Mary.

B I S H O P O F H A M I L T O N

June 10, 2020 Dear Parishioners: Thank you for your patience during these difficult times, and for your support of your Pastors and Parishes. The Premier of Ontario recently announced that all churches in the Province of Ontario are permitted to open for prayer and worship, effective June 12, 2020. In order to ensure that our churches are prepared to open for personal prayer and for Mass, according to the requirements of the government and health authorities, churches in the Diocese of Hamilton, who are prepared, will be opened on June 16th for weekday Mass and for prayer, and beginning on Saturday, June 20th for the celebration of Sunday Mass. For those who are elderly or whose immune system is compromised, and those who are hesitant to return to church at this time, please know that the obligation to participate at Sunday Mass is suspended until further notice. It is important to remember that the COVID-19 Pandemic is not over, and that everyone must continue to pay attention to the measures being put in place to limit the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Therefore, please note the following requirements for entry into the church: • Entrance is not permitted to those who have an elevated temperature, or are suffering

from cough, sputum production, shortness of breath, undue fatigue, loss of appetite, muscle aching, runny nose, chills involving shakes, loss of sense or taste or smell. If you are sick, you are kindly asked to stay home.

• If you have travelled outside Canada within the past 14 days, you are not to enter the church until you have completed the period of self-isolation.

• You are strongly encouraged to wear a mask upon entering the church. • Everyone is to use the hand sanitizer provided upon entry to the church. • Maintain a two-metre (six foot) distance at all times in the church and on church

property. • Only 30% of the seating capacity is permitted by government regulations at this time.

Ushers will guide you to the available designated seats.

During the celebration of Mass, you will notice a few changes based on the recommendation of health authorities to ensure everyone’s safety as much as possible: • The entrance procession will be simplified.

• There will be no hymnals in the pews; singing will be led by an instrumentalist and

cantor only. • Only one lector will proclaim the readings before the Gospel, and the petitions. • There will be no collection and presentation of bread and wine at the usual time. You

will be invited to deposit your offering in the basket/receptacle as you leave the church. • Before Communion, following the prayer (Lord, I am not worthy…) the Priest will say

once: The Body of Christ. All will respond together: Amen. Communion will be received in silence.

• You will be directed by the ushers to come to Communion row by row, while

maintaining physical distancing. Particular directions will be given before Communion.

• Communion can be received only in the hand at this time. Carefully extend your hands,

placing one upon the other to receive the Body of Christ. Communion from the chalice is not permitted.

• Following the dismissal, you will be directed to leave the church, row by row, in order

to maintain physical distancing. No printed bulletins will be available. • You are asked to refrain from socializing with others following Mass.

If you are visiting the church for personal prayer or adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, you will be required to observe all the health directives as for Mass. At this time, the Sacrament of Reconciliation cannot be celebrated in the usual Confessional or Reconciliation Chapel. Another suitable location which provides physical distancing as well as privacy will be designated in your church. As we welcome this first stage of returning to our Parish churches and resuming our public worship, let us continue to be united in prayer for one another and especially for those who, for whatever reason, are not able to join us at the Table of God’s Word and the Table of Christ’s Body and Blood. Sincerely in Christ and Mary Immaculate,
