JAR COLLECTION FOR FAMILY FUN FAIR

We are still collecting jars for our Jam and Preserve Stall at the School Fair. There is a collection box in the office for all jars. Please make sure they are clean with labels removed. Thank you to everyone who has dropped off jars thus far.

STUDENT ABSENCE AND EARLY PICK-UP PROCEDURE

Student Absence If your child is absent from school for whatever reason, this must be communicated to the school by 10:00am that day. Please either call the school office or send through an Absentee Form via Skoolbag App. Students arriving late will need to be signed in via the Student Sign In/Out Book located in the office. Early Pick-Up If your child needs to be picked up early from school, we ask that you let their class teacher know beforehand as a courtesy. Please sign your child out via the Student Sign In/Out Book and a staff member will ring the classroom for your child to come to the office. We understand that some early pick-ups are arranged last minute and so there might not be a chance to notify the teacher in advance. In these cases, please contact the school office as soon as practicable.

SCHOOL ENHANCEMENT SESSIONS

All our families are encouraged to participate in our Enhancement Sessions as they are a terrific way to not only assist our school but also network and make connections with other families. The school enhancement fee of $200 will be discounted if two or more sessions are attended. If you intend on attending our Enhancement Sessions, you may exclude the $200 fee from your annual school fee and levy total. Naturally, if by the end of the year you have not attended the working bee session/s as intended, this will remain on your account. Some families have indicated that they are happy to attend the Enhancement Sessions without claiming the $200 discount. Please go to www.schoolinterviews.com.au and use code MA4ZT to register for a session. Upcoming School Enhancement Sessions in 2017:

Saturday 22nd July at 9:00 – 11:00am

Saturday 2nd September at 9:00 – 11:00am

Friday 27th October at 5:00 – 7:00pm

Friday 1st December at 5:00 – 7:00pm (Family Fun Fair – Sunday 3rd December) Please email Tim Wrathall at [email protected] if you have any queries.

PRINCIPAL’S NEWS Dear Parents, Caregivers, Students and Friends,

Women’s Mass and Breakfast Congratulations to the amazing team of Women who organised the Annual St Michael’s Women’s Breakfast. Thank you to the committee members, Stacey Furniss, Renee Hoy, Michelle Menelaws, Brigid Tudor, Michelle Frazer and Jane O’Callaghan, the St Michael’s Women’s Choir and to those who also helped to prepare, set up and run the breakfast, Caroline G, Sarah G, Clare H, Denise M, Helen M, Olivia M, Sonia M, Tracey O, Jo S, Tas T and Renee Y. Every year this incredible morning planned and created by the PFA and an amazing team of women is a stand out event. It is such a beautiful tribute to celebrate all of the women in our Parish and School Community. Thank you also to Wendy A for taking the photos for this special occasion (p. 11).

Sacrament of Eucharist On the Tuesday 30th May we have the first Home Prayer Service. Thank you to the Thek, O’Brien, Mardling and Hawkins families who have so kindly opened their homes to support our Eucharist preparations. Our prayers are with the students as they draw closer to receiving Jesus through the pinnacle of Sacraments, the Eucharist.

New and Sibling Enrolments for 2018 Just a reminder to any siblings who may be enrolling for Prep for 2018, enrolment forms were due last Friday 12th May. The form is still available at the office and on the school website.

New Prep Family Interviews On Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23rd May, I will have the pleasure of interviewing our 2018 prospective new families to St Michael’s. This is an exciting time meeting the children and parents and finding out what the children love about kinder and what they hope to be doing at school. The siblings of current students entering Prep in 2018 will be interviewed at a later date.

2018 Enrolments If you are contemplating or have already arranged for your child/children to leave the school at the end of 2017 (Year 6s excepted), please let me know immediately as we have Prep enrolments wishing to begin. I am currently organising places and considering staffing for 2018 and need to know our numbers. I understand it seems early but it will really assist me to make a more accurate assessment of the enrolment situation.

St Michael’s Year 5/6 Camp Next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, the Year 5/6 students and teachers will be travelling to Camp Rumbug near Foster. This is our fun Winter camp with excellent facilities, great food and wonderful activities. I look forward to visiting the camp on Thursday night. We hope and pray the students have an enjoyable time away from suburbia immersed in the lovely countryside in Gippsland.

School Enhancement Morning I extend my appreciation to the families who worked hard at the May Enhancement Session. We had a strong turn out who cleaned, helped move furniture, and gratefully assisted with setting up the Women’s Breakfast. Thank you to the PFA for providing a BBQ and refreshments. Thank you to everyone for generously giving your time.

School Vision The Staff, Gail Ryan (Parish Pastoral Leader) and I spent two very productive days working on our School Vision. Ingrid Green from CEM facilitated the rigorous process and we are now in the final stages of completing our powerful statement. Peter Baines founder of ‘Hands Across the Water’ shared his story with us as a provocation, reminding us of the power of presence, clarity of purpose, the courage to make hard decisions and to live lives of service to others. Thank you to the parents and students who also shared their vision for St Michael’s. It is an exciting time for the St Michael’s Parish School community.

Masterplan Erin (Deputy Principal), Christian (STEM Leader), Hoang (cleaning and maintenance) and I had a services handover last Wednesday 10th May. At that time many areas of the new build still had minor details to be finished. Yesterday, I had a walk through with Dao Tran from the Archdiocese and Peter Tonkin from Y2 Architects. It is amazing what can be achieved in one week. The building is looking spectacular inside and out. The architects will have their defects walk tomorrow. The landscaping works have been scheduled for the June/July holidays as that is the most productive time for the landscapers to work. I will keep you informed of our progress as at this stage I still do not have a handover date.

Family Life Tonight, Thursday 18th May, St Michael’s will be offering our sex education program to our Year 3/4 and 5/6 cohort. It is important in this digital world for us to provide a respectful and clinical view of our ever-changing bodies and emotions. I encourage you to attend with your child, however it is non-compulsory. There is information further in the newsletter.

Respectful Relationships I encourage everyone to read the article from Jo Mannix (Student Wellbeing Leader) regarding Respectful Relationships (p. 8). St Michael’s was fortunate enough to be given a $20,000 grant to lead other schools’ understanding of encouraging a culture of gender equity and dignity for all through the Victorian Curriculum. This Government initiative came out of the Royal Commission into Family Violence and the need to educate students from a young age before stereotypes are set. It is fully endorsed by Catholic Education. If reading this causes you concern, please contact me. Congratulations to Cheryl, Sam, Annabel (1/2 C) and Sebastian on the birth of Marcus. Marisa Matthys Principal [email protected]

DEPUTY’S NEWS This week is Family Week. Families are a big part of who we are, they take care of us and being cared for makes us feel safe and loved. Everyone who helps us in some way cares about us. Being cared for strengthens us and gives us an aim to help others. Caring is like an endless circle, people care for you and you care for others. We as Australians are so fortunate to be cared for by a community. Without love and care in our world we would be lost. We would not be able to live without people who care. This week at home you may like to share a prayer together as a family.

First Eucharist The online booking closes this Friday 19th May for both the Home Prayer Services and the First Eucharist Celebration Masses. Please log onto www.schoolinterviews.com.au and use the event code 5yvnx to book for the Celebration Masses and the event code d5su2 to book for the Home Prayer Service. RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS PROJECT Our School has received a grant from the State Government and has been chosen as a Lead School to implement the Respectful Relationships Project, along with 126 other schools across the State. The project will be rolled out over the next 18 months and our school will then model this process to partner schools in the local area. The Respectful Relationships Project in schools and early childhood settings is about tackling family violence through education. "By having this program in Victorian schools and kindergartens our students will learn from a very young age that the best relationships are respectful ones." (Fiona Richardson, Minister for Women and the Preventions of Family Violence) All the evidence shows that education is key to ending the cycle of family violence, which is why teaching respectful relationships at school is so important. In the family violence prevention space, the term ‘respectful relationships’ has a very specific meaning, that is, the building and promotion of gender equity in relationships, and the challenging of gender stereotypes. This definition is based on clear evidence that challenging gender stereotypes and promoting gender equality helps to address gender-based violence. It will have a side pocket and a side zip and will look similar to the skirt pictured (unfortunately we didn’t have the supplier’s photo in time for the newsletter!). CHANGES TO SCHOOL BANKING

Hello, my name is Helen McMillan and I am the School Banking Coordinator for students saving via the Catholic Development Fund (CDF) and I also deposit funds on behalf of students who hold Bendigo Bank Piggy Saver accounts. Several exciting changes are taking place for all CDF Student Savings Program account holders so please take note of the following for all current passbook holders and those interested in opening an account with CDF for their child/children:

Date Key Activity

2017 Term 1 and Term 2 Application forms for opening new accounts in CDF Student Savings Program no longer accepted.

Existing passbook holders can request to move to the new 31 Mission Saver accounts or request to close the account and withdraw funds. Please note the passbook must be submitted with the relevant form.

From 30th June CDF will cease accepting contributions for exiting passbook accounts.

End Term 4 Existing passbook holders will be transitioned to new 31 Day Mission Saver accounts.

So, what is the 31 Day Mission Saver Account? The 31 Day Mission Saver Account is an investment in the CDF which aims to reward investors who regularly deposit and save with CDF. The account is digitally delivered via CDF Online portal which is accessed via the web. The account is linked to a Parent/Guardian’s nominated External Bank Account with an ability to set up reoccurring payments. The current interest rate is 0.15% p.a. with an additional bonus 2.20% p.m. applicable for a minimum A$1 contribution and no withdrawals for the month. Please note that rates are subject to change without notice and interest accrues monthly and is paid annually on 31st March. 31 days notice is required for each withdrawal of funds from the account.

Application forms are available at the School office and completed forms and certified IDs can be returned via the office basket. School Banking Coordinator and I will submit on your behalf.
