A Message from Fr. McClane

Dear Brothers and Sisters, From the Cross Jesus says to Our Blessed Mother, “Woman, behold your son” and to St. John, “Behold your mother” (see Jn 19:26-27). The Church has always interpreted this passage as Jesus giving Mary not just to St. John but also to the Church as a whole, so that she is now our mother too, Mother of the Church. We should turn to our Mother and ask for her help and prayers during this time of pandemic and unrest in our country. I think about this as the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary arrives this Saturday, a feast which is so prominent in the month of August and the summer as a whole. As Peter John Cameron once said, the Mother of God as she held Jesus in her arms after he was taken down from the Cross also cradles all “our failure, our desperation, our loneliness, our regret, our helplessness, our nothingness, our defeat”. Here at St. Paul’s we are very familiar with the story of St. Juan Diego and Our Lady of Guadalupe and celebrate their feasts in December with great joy.

In December 1531, St. Juan Diego saw Mary several times and carried out the mission and message she gave to him faithfully. On Monday, December 12, however, St. Juan Diego was afraid for the health of his uncle and took a detour from meeting Mary that

Bendiciones. Padre Miguel Valle.

On August 19, 1995, I laid prostrate on the floor in the Church in the Seminary of Valmaría, in Bogotá Colombia at the time of my ordination. Twenty-five years ago, I was ordained. My parents were there too. I am surrounded by people that have been a significant part of that journey for the past 25 years. My family and teachers - the ones who first formed me in faith and love - prepared me for the much larger family that would become mine through the Sacrament of Holy Orders. What an honor, joy, and responsibility to be called “Father” by so many people and parishioners. My heart is full of gratitude today that Jesus selected me to share his mission of building his Kingdom for these past 25 years. Many times, in my own life I felt the desire to give up everything. But today, I can reflect on many things with more patience that God chose weak, ineffective humans like me to continue his immense and beautiful mission. God definitely has walked with me. My goal is that through my ministry, God touch the heart of each of you. I pray he will give comfort you and your families in moments of pain and suffering and offer you hope when you may feel hopeless. My goal is still to make a difference in your lives. I have been given the privilege and joy to minister to the people here at St Paul Church for 8 years of my priestly ministry. Thank you for allowing me to minister to you. I pray God will continue to use me in this way. Padre Miguel Valle

day so that he could attend to him. He chose another route around the hill where she was to appear to avoid seeing her. But the Virgin intercepted him, told him that he should have prayed to her, and then said these famous words: "Am I not here, I who am your mother?" She assured him that Juan Bernardino, St. Juan Diego’s uncle, had now recovered. We can hear Mary say these words to us, as we face our crosses and as we continue to face this pandemic: “Am I not here, I who am your mother?” Sincerely in Christ, Fr. McClane

PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS

[T]he Immaculate Virgin, preserved free from all stain of original sin, when the course of her earthly life was finished, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory, and exalted by the Lord as Queen over all things [...]. The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin is a singular participation in her Son's Resurrection and an anticipation of the resurrection of other Christians:

In giving birth you kept your virginity; in your Dormition you did not leave the world, O Mother of God, but were joined to the source of Life. You conceived the living God and, by your prayers, will deliver our souls from death. CCC966 The Assumption of Mary, though a difficult mystery to try to fully understand, is an important one for us to contemplate, as we do while praying the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary. Though there are few details available to us, we know that because Mary was immaculately conceived and maintained a state of perfect grace for her entire life, she was freed from the sentence of death as we know it and was assumed - body and soul - into heaven with Christ.

On August 14, the Church celebrates St. Maximilian Kolbe and begs his intercession. As a child, Kolbe was granted a vision of Mary. Kolbe was a Polish Catholic priest and Conventual Franciscan friar. He was active in promoting the veneration of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, founding and supervising a monastery near Warsaw, operating a radio station, and running several other publications. Due to Kolbe's efforts to promote consecration and entrustment to Mary, he is known as the Apostle of Consecration to Mary. In 1941, Kolbe's monastery was shut down by the Nazi’s and he was arrested, imprisoned, and sent to Auschwitz. Continuing to act as a priest, Kolbe was subjected to violent harassment. That summer, one prisoner escaped from the camp, prompting the camp commander to pick ten men to be starved to death in an underground bunker to deter further escape attempts. When one of the selected men, cried out, "My wife! My children!", Kolbe volunteered to take his place. From his prison cell, Kolbe led the prisoners in prayer and song in the face of death. After they had been starved and deprived of water for two weeks, only Kolbe remained alive. The guards wanted the bunker emptied, so they executed Kolbe by lethal injection. He died on Aug 14. His remains were cremated on Aug 15, the feast day of the Assumption of Mary. In 1982, Pope John Paul II declared Kolbe a saint and a “martyr of charity.” Franciszek Gajowniczek, the man whose life was spared by Kolbe’s sacrifice, was present at his canonization Mass in Rome.

WORSHIP AID

Entrance Song Christ Be Beside Me

Greeting Priest: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and

the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. People: And with your spirit.

Gloria Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Liturgy of the Word

First Reading I Kings 19:9,11-13 Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord God.

At the mountain of God, Horeb, Elijah came to a cave where he took shelter. Then the LORD said to him, “Go outside and stand on the mountain before the LORD; the LORD will be passing by.” A strong and heavy wind was rending the mountains and crushing rocks before the LORD— but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake— but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was fire— but the LORD was not in the fire. After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound. When he heard this, Elijah hid his face in his cloak and went and stood at the entrance of the cave. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 85 Reader: Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your

salvation. People: Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your

salvation. Reader: I will hear what God proclaims;

the LORD — for he proclaims peace. Near indeed is his salvation to those who fear him, glory dwelling in our land.

People: Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.

Reader: Kindness and truth shall meet;

justice and peace shall kiss. Truth shall spring out of the earth, and justice shall look down from heaven.

People: Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.

Reader: The LORD himself will give his benefits; our land shall yield its increase. Justice shall walk before him, and prepare the way of his steps.

People: Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.

Second Reading Romans 9:1-5 I could wish that I were accursed for the sake of my own people.

Brothers and sisters: I speak the truth in Christ, I do not lie; my conscience joins with the Holy Spirit in bearing me witness that I have great sorrow and constant anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my own people, my kindred according to the flesh. They are Israelites; theirs the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; theirs the patriarchs, and from them, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gospel Matthew 14:22-33 Command me to come to you over the waters.

Deacon: The Lord be with you. People: And with your spirit. Deacon: A reading from the holy gospel according to ... People: Glory to you, O Lord. After he had fed the people, Jesus made the disciples get into a boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone. Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. “It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear. At once Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” Peter said to him in reply, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught Peter, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” After they got into the boat, the wind died down. Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God.” The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Profession of Faith I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord

(Continued on page 7)

Page 7

Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Universal Prayer Deacon: …, we pray to the Lord. People: Lord, hear our prayer.

Presentation Instrumental

Liturgy of the Eucharist May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church.

Priest: The Lord be with you. People: And with your Spirit. Priest: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up to the Lord. Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right and just.

Sanctus Holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Memorial Acclamations We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection until you come again.

Communion Rite Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Priest: Deliver us...our Savior, Jesus Christ. People: For the kingdom, the power and the glory are

yours now and for ever. Priest: The peace of the Lord be with you always. People: And with your spirit.

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, grant us peace.

Priest: Behold the Lamb of God...supper of the Lamb.

People: Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

An Act of Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy

Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You

sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

FAITH FORMATION

A Message from John Michael McGuire Where was God in the natural disaster, the terrible disease, or the most recent crisis? So many people struggle with this question. It becomes a great stumbling block, especially for young people as they seek out deeper faith. It might be fair to say we all struggle with this question at some point in our lives, usually during a time of a great challenge. In the first reading from the First Book of Kings, the Prophet Elijah is urged to go out on to the mountain to be in the presence of God. Elijah

didn’t find who he was looking for in the damaging winds, the destructive earthquakes, or the consuming fire. Instead, God was found in a quiet whisper, in the silent aftermath. During times of destruction or sorrow, we can often be distracted by the “noise” of what we are facing. When a tsunami or earthquake strikes, or a virus causes fear and pain, we are distracted by the voices who are speaking fear and focusing on the pain. It is hard for us to seek the quiet, where we will find the voice of God speaking to us. When people ask where God is in these disasters, they only need to take a step back and look around. He is urging the heroic actions of Good Samaritans and first responders. God prompts on the charity and care of those near and far who witness the suffering. The Lord does not desire suffering and pain for us His Creation. He loves us so deeply that he sent Jesus Christ His Son to destroy sin and death. This week, let’s pray for those who are seeking God, but struggle to find Him in the noise and suffering of the world, that they can join us in the Church, and in ministering to others like them. God Bless and have a great week.

PASTORAL HISPANA

place on the mountain and suddenly appears walking on the waves! When Peter catches sight of Him, He jumps out of the crowded boat onto the water and he takes a few tentative steps toward His Master. But all of a sudden, logic kicks in; awareness steps up, and Peter loses his confidence and begins to sink. Only when Jesus lends a hand to lift his friend up does the crisis end. (I often picture Jesus with a smile on His handsome Face, maybe even with an added chuckle, as color returns to Peter’s scared face as he stands solidly again. Of course, it is the perfect opportunity for Our Lord to remind Peter that his faith needs a little updating. Some added depth. More strengthening private prayer. Naturally, the Holy Spirit wants us to ask ourselves some probing questions as He presents this well-known gospel scene. When life puts us in some “rough water” we know who we can depend on. Such “stormy seas” will come to nearly all of us at one time or another. So, do we turn to God when it happens, or do we rely only on our instinct for self-preservation? Or the cleverly concocted myth of self-reliance that we eschews help? That Amish farmer knew better with his problem. Without belaboring the obvious, I trust that we have all learned a lot about ourselves and our dependency upon each other during these months of the pandemic, with the probability of more months to come. Hopefully, you and I as believers have

stepped up our reliance on God. We know in a brand new way that some problems are too much for our finite fiber to cope with, much less to solve. We need a helping hand. God’s is the best. Maybe you don’t have 300 friends to call on to help solve your problem. But you do have One better than those by far. He once said: “Come to Me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will refresh you.” He never reneges on a promise, and is always there to lend His most powerful Hand. After all, “problems are only opportunities with thorns on them.” ( Hugh Miller, Scottish scientist, d.1856.) God love you and give you His peace!

Tuesdays @ 7:00 pm via Zoom Join Bishop Robert Barron for a deeper look at sin and virtue. This engaging and eye-opening presentation illuminates the seven deadly sins, those great spiritual blocks that inhibit our

flourishing in relationship with God and one another. But there’s hope! The seven lively virtues offer antidotes to each sin and help set us on the right path to healing and happiness. Current schedule: Jul 28, Aug 4, Aug 11 Meeting info: 925-5934-0135 Pwd: Romans122
