Ordinary Time In the L i turg ica l Year

While the word “ordinary” in popular usage is used to describe things that are nondescript or dull, ordinary rather means customary, regular, and orderly. Ordi-nary Time may also be called Ordinal Time, which means numbered time. Ordi-nal comes from the Latin “ordinalis,” which is a word meaning “showing order, denoting an order of succession.” Hence, Ordinary Time is the standard, orderly, counted time outside of the other liturgical seasons.

What is Ordinary Time? Ordinary time is the longest liturgical season in the Catholic Church, encom-passing either thirty-three or thirty-four weeks each year. Because other liturgical seasons begin or end with movable feasts, the length of Ordinary time can vary slightly; however, thirty-three weeks is the more common length. The weeks are numbered, e.g., the first Sunday of Ordinary Time, the second Sunday of Ordi-nary Time, and so on. Ordinary time is technically one liturgical season, though it is divided into two periods. Prior to the Second Vatican Council, when the term “Ordinary Time” was formally established, the two time periods were merely referred to as “the Season after Epiphany” and “the Season after Pentecost.” The liturgical color of Ordinary Time is green; however, other appropriate colors are worn on particular feast days.

Season after Epiphany or Ordinary Time after the Baptism

The period of Ordinary Time used to be referred to as the Season after Epipha-ny. That title and the sometimes-used titles “Season after the Baptism” or “Ordinary Time after the Baptism” are still useful in identifying the time period. While the Epiphany and the Baptism are celebrated on separate days, the two descriptions (after Epiphany and after the Baptism) are not contradictory. In the modern Roman rite, Epiphany is celebrated on the first Sunday after Jan-uary 1 and the Baptism of the Lord is celebrated the following Sunday. Prior to Vatican II, Epiphany was celebrated January 6, whether a Sunday or a week-day, and the Baptism was celebrated on the Octave of the Epiphany, which would be January 13. Where the title “Season after Epiphany” was used, the phrase was inclusive of the Octave of the Epiphany - January 13 - therefore indi-cating that Ordinary time started the day after the Baptism was celebrated. This period of Ordinary Time lasts until the day before Ash Wednesday, which is Shrove Tuesday. This portion of Ordinary Time focuses on the childhood of Jesus and then on the public ministry of Christ.

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord: Next Week, our nation will commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Inde-pendence and the inauguration of a new nation, The United States of America. We are grateful to live in a country founded upon the ideals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The principles embodied in our nation’s foundational documents – the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, for example – remain as valid for our time as they were for the nation’s Founders. As citizens of this great nation, we share the responsibility of making her more and more a reflection of the ideals upon which she was founded. Our country is not, and never has been, a perfect society. Even as the first patriots were striving to establish a new political identity, American society was scarred by the evils of slavery, religious discrimination (against Catholics, mostly), and a sometimes too utilitarian view of the human person. Nevertheless, the formation of our country provided a means by which these injustices could be addressed and alleviated, although this did not always hap-pen without great struggle, as the Civil War attests. How can we contribute to the betterment of our nation? What contribution can we make? One of the Founding Fathers, John Adams – who would become the second President – once wrote, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any oth-er” (Letter to the Officers of the First Brigade of the Third Division of the Militia of Massachusetts, 1798). If we want to contribute to the good of our nation, we must strive to be saints. This doesn’t mean turning our backs upon civic involvement, not at all. It does mean striving to be leaven in the midst of the loaf, elevating the whole through the integrity of one’s life (see Matthew (13:33). Let us join together in prayer for our country, that we may realize the great prom-ise echoed in the Pledge of Allegiance: “One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” Sincerely Yours in Christ,

R.C.I.A. The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is for people who are thinking about the possibility of becoming Catho-lic. It is for people who have not been baptized, people of other faiths or people who have been baptized Catholic but did not complete the sacraments of Initiation. This is a beautiful process, with no pressure to commit to our faith community, in which interested persons slowly explore the beliefs of the Catholic Church and discern, over a period of many months, if they desire to become Catholic. If you are interested, or have a relative, friend or co-worker who has expressed this interest, please call: Nadia Jara: 281- 463-7878 ext. 337 or at [email protected]

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul thanks you for the mercy and dedication you have shown to those less fortunate. In 2016, your gifts (throughout the diocese) enabled us to provide nutritious food to over 22,000 of your neighbors, and provide $2.8 million rent and utility assistance, keeping thousands of families in their homes with the lights on and the air conditioning running! Will you prayerfully consider another generous donation to the Society’s Annual Archdiocesan-wide Black Bag Col-lection on July 8-9th? SEAS parishioners, please note that the above request for donations is a special donation made once a year to the archdiocesan district council of St. Vincent de Paul. This year, it occurs one week prior to OUR regular donations on Vincentian Sundays (3rd Sundays of the month), which are specific to helping those within our church boundaries. Thank you for all you do for our lesser brothers and sisters!

“…whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.”

Lighthouse CD of the Week How to talk about Same Sex Marriage by Trent Horn

Catholic Apologist Trent Horn considers same-sex marriage and provides an in-depth dis-cussion that addresses the mis-conceptions held by many in our society today. This examina-tion of what marriage really is, and what it is not, provides a truly gracious and persuasive response to the debate sur-rounding this important topic.

Parishioner Comments – “Trent Horn perfectly illustrates the Catholic teaching regarding marriage and how best to defend it.” “The issues he addressed were pertinent and he was very understandable.” Your generous donations to cover our cost will assure the continued availability of these wonderful resources!

permanently connected to St. Maria and to her interces-sion. On the occasion of her canonization in 1950—an event attended by her mother and also by her murderer—Pope Pius XII delivered a beautiful homily on Maria Goretti’s life and virtues, a portion of which is quoted as follows: “The life of this simple girl—I shall concern myself only with highlights—we can see as worthy of heaven. Even today people can look upon it with admiration and respect. Par-ents can learn from her story how to raise their God-given children in virtue, courage and holiness; they can learn to train them in the Catholic faith so that, when put to the test, God's grace will support them and they will come through undefeated, unscathed and untarnished. "From Maria's story carefree children and young people with their zest for life can learn not to be led astray by at-tractive pleasures which are not only ephemeral and emp-ty but also sinful. Instead they can fix their sights on achiev-ing Christian moral perfection, however difficult and haz-ardous that course may prove. With determination and God's help all of us can attain that goal by persistent effort and prayer. "Not all of us are expected to die a martyr's death, but we are all called to the pursuit of Christian virtue. This demands strength of character though it may not match that of this innocent girl. Still, a constant, persistent and relentless effort is asked of us right up to the moment of our death. This may be conceived as a slow steady martyrdom which Christ urged upon us when he said: The kingdom of heaven is set upon and laid waste by violent forces. "So let us all, with God's grace, strive to reach the goal that the example of the virgin martyr, Saint Maria Goretti, sets before us. Through her prayers to the Redeemer may all of us, each in his own way, joyfully try to follow the inspiring example of Maria Goretti who now enjoys eternal happi-ness in heaven.” Through the intercession of St. Maria Goretti, her killer, Ales-sandro Serenelli, was converted, and spent the rest of his life in prayer and penance. After he was released from prison, He asked Maria’s mother for forgiveness. Signora Goretti said to him: “God has forgiven you, my Ma-ria has forgiven you, how can I not forgive you?” From that moment on, Alessandro remained close to Maria’s mother, who for her part, treated him as a son. What an impressive example of mercy for all of us!

Thursday, July 6 is the Memorial of St. Maria Goretti, Virgin and Martyr. The Holy Mass will be celebrated according to the regular weekday schedule: 6:30 a.m. , 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Confessions will be available after the 6:30 a.m. Mass.

Who of us cannot remember the enormous outpouring of devotion on the occasion of the visit of St. Maria’s relics to our parish church? Approximately 15,000 people passed through our doors on that day, and hundreds of confes-sions were heard, from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 a.m. the follow-ing morning. It was a day of conversion and grace for many. We now have the privilege of having a first class relic of St. Maria Goretti enshrined within the new altar. From now on, every Mass and every moment of prayer in our church is

Perpetual Adoration Twentieth Anniversary

Celebration All are invited to come and give thanks to God for this great grace in our parish.

Friday, July 7

Mass at 7:00 p.m. (English)

Reception following, with a special speaker,

Mrs. Katie Pfeffer.

Katie Pfeffer resides in Houston, Texas with her husband of more than 35 years, Kirk and their five children. Katie converted to the faith in 1980 one week before her marriage. Inspired by Pope John Paul II's open-ing homily at the International Eucha-ristic Congress in Seoul Korea, Katie began making a daily holy hour pray-ing for the spread of Perpetual Adora-tion around the world. In 1996, after reading Redeemer of Man and Dominicae Cenae by Pope John Paul II, she felt called to evange-lize on the value of Perpetual Adora-tion. Since then, Katie has established Per-petual Adoration in fifty-six parishes.

The lay practice of Eucharistic adoration formally began in Avignon, France on September 11, 1226. To celebrate and give thanks for the victory over the Albi-gensians, a heretical movement, King Louis VII of France asked the Bishop of Avignon to have the Blessed Sacrament exposed in the Chapel of the Holy Cross. The throng of adorers was so great that the bishop decided to have the adoration continue day and night. During the Middle Ages, many more of the faithful began to adore the Blessed Sacrament apart from the Mass. At first, the custom was to worship the Host re-served in the tabernacle. Eventually, some came to practice the devotion with the taber-nacle doors open. Later still, solemn exposition of the host, in a monstrance, became the norm. The practice spread through Europe and cul-minated in the establishment of the Feast of Corpus Christi—Latin for “the Body of Christ”—in 1264. The feast itself, now celebrated each June, helped spread the devotion. It was not until after the Council of Trent, how-ever, that perpetual adoration began to de-velop on a worldwide scale. During the Protestant Reformation, church loot-ings were common, as were desecrations of the Blessed Sacrament. Faithful Catholics made reparation to God by keeping a loving vigil before Him, around the clock. Perpetual adoration became a symbol of constancy in a volatile age. Throughout Europe and eventually America, new religious orders arose cen-tered on uninterrupted Eucharistic adoration. In 1907, the Catholic Encyclope-dia could state that such orders were too numerous to list. In the years follow-ing the Second Vatican Council, the devotion began to wane, only to rise again in popularity with the encouragement of Pope John Paul II. At 128 years and counting, the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration have the oldest Adoration program in the United States. Perpetual adoration spread to many parishes, beginning in the 1980’s. There are more than forty parishes in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston that host perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. The practice began at Eliza-beth Seton parish twenty years ago, and has been a source of strength and comfort for many adorers ever since.

History of Perpetual Adoration

Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time: June 25, 2017 13

Continued from page 2...

Season after Pentecost or Ordinary Time after Pentecost

The second portion of Ordinary Time begins after Pentecost and is much longer than the first. This second period of Ordinary Time lasts from the day after Pente-cost through the final day before Advent. Because this portion of Ordinary Time occurs after the celebrations of Jesus’s Passion, Resurrection, and Ascension, this segment of Ordinary Time is focused on the Age of the Church. The Age of the Church is the age we live in now, the time that exists between the Age of the Apostles and the second and last coming of Christ for which we are preparing. This period of Ordinary Time is also focused on Christ’s reign as King of kings; the Feast of Christ the King caps off the season of Ordinary Time as the final Sunday before Advent begins.

Pour forth, we beseech you, O

Lord, your grace into our hearts, that we, to whom the Incarnation of Christ you Son

was made known by the mes-sage of an Angel, may,

through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, by his Pas-sion and Cross be brought to the glory of his Resurrection.

Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time: June 25, 2017 17

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church 6646 Addicks-Satsuma Road Houston, Texas 77084-1520

ST. IRENAEUS FEAST DAY: JUNE 28 St. Irenaeus (early 2nd century – died c. AD 202), was Bishop of Lugdu-num in Gaul, then a part of the Roman Empire (now Lyon, France). He was an early Church Father and apologist, and his writings were formative in the early development of Christian theology. A resident of Smyrna, he heard the preach-ing of St. Polycarp, a disciple of St. John the Evangelist. Irenaeus' best-known book, Adversus Haereses or Against Heresies (c. 180), is a detailed critique of Gnosticism, which was a serious threat to the Church. As one of the first great Christian theologians, Irenaeus emphasized the traditional elements in the Church, especially the episcopate, Scripture, and tradi-tion. Against the Gnostics, who said that they possessed a secret oral tradi-tion from Jesus himself, Irenaeus maintained that the bishops in different cities are known as far back as the Apostles and that the bishops provided the only safe guide to the interpretation of Scripture. His work is credited for laying out the "orthodoxies of the Christian church, its faith, its preaching and the books that it held as sacred authority." His writings, with those of Clement and Ignatius, are taken as among the earliest signs of the doctrine of the primacy of the Roman See. Irenaeus is the earliest witness to recognition of the canonical character of all four Gospels.
