Cultural Celebration One of the strong suggestions that emerged from the listening sessions preparing for the Synod and the “Be My Witness” program, is that pa-rishioners be given an opportunity to know and appreciate the history and meaning of the various cultural celebrations in our parish. This week

our Filipino brothers and sisters are celebrating the Feast of Santo Niňo. The Santo Nino is as old as the Catholic faith in the country. Made by Flemish artisans, the statue is now known as the Santo Niňo de Cebu and is enshrined in a chapel within the Santo Niňo Basilica. The statue is small but it stands regal with its left hand holding a cross-bearing globe (a symbol of Christian authority) while its other hand is in a priestly gesture. It has a red cape with intricate embroidery and on top of its head is a crown.

. Venerating the Child Jesus was widespread in Spain during Magellan’s time with European wood sculptors having the Infant Jesus as their sub-ject in the 1300s. So it is not surprising that they gave the statue of the Santo Niňo as a gift to Cebu’s Queen Juana in 1521 by Portuguese-born Ferdinand Magellan. It is central to the Filipinos especially to those from Cebu and for all of them, it is a symbol of Christianity’s arrival in 2021. Yes, this Santo Niňo (Baby Jesus) converted the Philippines to Catholicism. Last year it was their great 500 year celebration!!! The origi-nal statue brought by Magellan is still found in Cebu. Devotees can see it encased in bullet-proof glass. In our parish the novena preparing for this great celebration has been every night at 7:00 pm beginning with rosary and then the celebration of Mass. The celebration of the actual feast day will be today (Sunday) at 7:00 pm. There are many more rich details but space does not make it possible at this point. In the future more may be provided. A similar Infant Jesus statue is the Infant Jesus of Prague which originated in Czech Republic. We have an image of the Infant Jesus of Prague in our parish. As you face the main altar, the statue is to the far left on a small shelf. The third Friday of each month our Hispanic brothers and sisters celebrate the novena to the Divino Niňo. The prior week we will explain the history and meaning of this devotion. No matter if we are speaking of Santo Niňo, Infant Jesus of Prague, or Divino Niňo, the statue is the same Jesus in His infancy. It is the Son of God born of the Virgin Mary through the Holy Spirit. A different aspect of His life and message is attached to each “title”. May the Santo Niňo bless each and every person in our parish in a very special way.

FEAST OF OUR LADY OF ALTAGRACIA will be celebrated in our parish on January 22nd beginning with the rosary at 6:15pm followed by the Mass at 7:00pm. The celebrant and homilist will be Rev. Manuel De Jesus Rodriguez, the former pastor of Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Just as our Filipino brothers and sisters have several celebrations honoring Mama Mary, as they most often speak of her, our Hispanic brothers and sisters also have several cultural celebrations honoring Mary. Under this title of Our Lady of Altagracia, she is especially honored and cele-brated by our brothers and sisters of the Dominican Republic. Due to lack of space, we will give the history of the devotion in next week’s bul-letin. What follows should help us understand the meaning of the image. The image of Our Lady of Altagracia (highest grace) represents the scene of the Birth of Jesus in the Nativity Scene of Bethlehem, where the Virgin’s motherhood stands out. In the painting is the Star of Bethlehem, which has eight points which symbolizes the sky and has two rays extending towards the manger, in which God is blessing his son Jesus. Above Mary there is a radiance, which can be found in more detail in Revelation 12:1. Altagracia wears a crown on her head for being the Queen of Heaven, and a veil on her head because she us betrothed to Joseph. She is dressed in red, white and blue, the red is because she is a neat human being, the white because She is a woman conceived without original sin, and he blue cloak because “the power of the Most High will come upon you” and because she is the queen of Heaven. In front of Mary is the Child Jesus, naked, asleep on straw and well behind is Saint Joseph, dressed in a red cape and holding a candle in his left hand. The figure of Mary, in an attitude of adoration is striking, with her hands joined in the shape of an arch. On her chest there is a kind of white ray in the shape of a triangle, expression of the virgin birth of Jesus, that rises from the manger where the child sleeps almost to the shoulders of the Mother. Mary’s face is serene, her eyes lowered indicating neither seriousness nor sadness, but rather joy and peace, in an attitude of meditation. Her head is covered with a dark blue veil that reaches her shoulders and with a crown of pearls, symbol of her status as queen, for being the Moher of the King and around twelve stars which represent the Catholic Church, founded on the Twelve Apostles. Behind, a great star stands out, the same one that accompanied the Magi, to introduce them to the Sa ior. Its mantle is dotted with 16 little stars. Behind there is a column, which means that the cave or manger of the birth is a temple because God Himself, the baby Jesus, lives there. This is a great opportunity for all of our Hispanic brothers and sisters, no matter from what coun try of origin, to come, support and be a part of this celebration of our Mother Mary. Everyone is most welcomed to join this celebration.

ESQUINA DE LA EDUCACIÓN RELIGIOSA

Celebración Cultural Una de las fuertes sugerencias que surgieron de las sesiones de escucha que se prepararon para el Sínodo y el programa "Sé mi testigo", es que los feligreses tengan la oportunidad de conocer y apreciar la historia y el significado de las diversas celebraciones culturales en nuestra parro-

quia. Esta semana nuestros hermanos y hermanas filipinos están celebrando la Fiesta de Santo Niňo. El Santo Niño es tan antiguo como la fe católica en el país. Hecha por artesanos flamencos, la estatua ahora se conoce como Santo Niňo de Cebu y está consagrada en una capilla dentro de la Basílica de Santo Niňo. La estatua es pequeña pero se yergue majestuosa con su mano iz-quierda sosteniendo un globo con una cruz (un símbolo de la autoridad cristiana) mientras que su otra mano está en un gesto sacerdotal. Tiene una capa roja con intrincados bordados y encima de su cabeza hay una corona. Venerar al Niño Jesús estaba muy extendido en España durante la época de Magallanes y los escultores de madera europeos tenían al Niño Jesús como tema en el siglo XIII. Así que no es de extrañar que le dieran la estatua del Santo Niňo como regalo a la reina Juana de Cebú en 1521 por el portugués Fernando de Magallanes. Es central para los filipinos, especialmente para los de Cebú y para todos ellos, es un símbolo de la llegada del cristianismo en 2021. Sí, este Santo Niňo (Niño Jesús) convirtió Filipinas al catolicismo. El año pasado fue su gran celebración de 500 años!!! La estatua original traída por Magallanes todavía se encuentra en Cebú. Los devotos pueden verlo encerrado en un vidrio a prue-ba de balas. En nuestra parroquia la novena de preparación para esta gran celebración ha sido todas las noches a las 7:00 pm comenzando con el rosario y luego la celebración de la Misa. La celebración de la fiesta propiamente dicha será hoy (domingo) a las 7:00 pm. Hay muchos más detalles ricos pero el espacio no lo hace posible en este punto. En el futuro se pueden proporcionar más. Una estatua del Niño Jesús similar es el Niño Jesús de Praga que se originó en la República Checa. Tenemos una imagen del Niño Jesús de Praga en nuestra parroquia. Al mirar hacia el altar principal, la estatua está en el extremo izquierdo en un pequeño estante. El tercer viernes de cada mes nuestros hermanos y hermanas hispanos celebran la novena al Divino Niňo. La semana anterior explicaremos la historia y significado de esta devoción. No importa si estamos hablando de Santo Niňo, Niño Jesús de Praga, o Divino Niňo, la estatua es el mismo Jesús en su infancia. Es el Hijo de Dios nacido de la Virgen María por obra del Espíritu Santo. Un aspecto diferente de Su vida y mensaje se adjunta a cada "título". Que el Santo Niňo bendiga a todas y cada una de las personas de nuestra parroquia de una manera muy especial. LA FIESTA DE NUESTRA SEÑORA DE LA ALTAGRACIA se celebrará en nuestra parroquia el 22 de enero comenzando con el rosa-rio a las 6:15 pm seguido de la Misa a las 7:00 pm. El celebrante y homilista será el Rev. Manuel De Jesús Rodríguez, ex párroco de la Presen-tación de la Santísima Virgen María. Así como nuestros hermanos y hermanas filipinos tienen varias celebraciones en honor a Mamá María, ya que la mayoría de las veces hablan de ella, nuestros hermanos y hermanas hispanos también tienen varias celebraciones culturales en honor a María. Bajo este título de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia, ella es especialmente honrada y celebrada por nuestros hermanos y hermanas de la República Dominicana. Por falta de espacio, daremos la historia de la devoción en el boletín de la próxima semana. Lo que sigue debería ayudarnos a entender el significado de la imagen. La imagen de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia (gracia altísima) representa la escena del Nacimiento de Jesús en el Belén de Belén, donde desta-ca la maternidad de la Virgen. En el cuadro se encuentra la Estrella de Belén, la cual tiene ocho puntas que simboliza el cielo y tiene dos rayos que se extienden hacia el pesebre, en el cual Dios está bendiciendo a su hijo Jesús. Sobre María hay un resplandor, que se puede encontrar con más detalle en Apocalipsis 12:1. Altagracia lleva una corona en la cabeza por ser la Reina del Cielo, y un velo en la cabeza porque está compro-metida con José. Está vestida de rojo, blanco y azul, el rojo es porque es un ser humano pulcro, el blanco porque es una mujer concebida sin pecado original, y el manto azul porque “el poder del Altísimo vendrá sobre ti”. y porque ella es la reina del cielo. Delante de María está el Niño Jesús, desnudo, dormido sobre la paja y bien atrás está San José, vestido con una capa roja y sosteniendo una vela en su mano izquierda. Llama la atención la figura de María, en actitud de adoración, con las manos juntas en forma de arco. Sobre su pecho hay una especie de rayo blanco en forma de triángulo, expresión del nacimiento virginal de Jesús, que sube desde el pesebre donde duerme el niño casi hasta los hom-bros de la Madre. El rostro de María está sereno, la mirada baja no indica seriedad ni tristeza, sino alegría y paz, en actitud de meditación. Su cabeza está cubierta con un velo azul oscuro que le llega hasta los hombros y con una corona de perlas, símbolo de su condición de reina, por ser la Moher del Rey y alrededor de doce estrellas que representan a la Iglesia Católica, fundada sobre los Doce Apóstoles. Detrás destaca una gran estrella, la misma que acompañó a los Reyes Magos, para presentarles al Marinero. Su manto está salpicado de 16 estrellitas. Detrás hay una columna, lo que significa que la cueva o pesebre del nacimiento es un templo porque allí vive Dios mismo, el niño Jesús. Esta es una gran oportunidad para que todos nuestros hermanos y hermanas hispanos, sin importar de qué país de origen, vengan, apoyen y sean parte de esta celebración de nuestra Madre María. Todos son bienvenidos a unirse a esta celebración.

There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servers, “Do whatever he tells you.” Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings, each holding twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus told them, “Fill the jars with water.” So they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.” So they took it. And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine, without knowing where it came from although the servers who had drawn the wa-ter knew , the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an inferi-or one; but you have kept the good wine until now.” Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs at Cana in Galilee and so revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him.
