(Please see our bulletin or website for our times of services). A common question about the numerical counting of days is, “Isn’t it four days?” It is four days if you count Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday as individual days. But the church’s counting of these “days” begins from the evening of the preceding day, following the language in Genesis, “evening came, and morning followed.” Thus, Thursday evening to Friday evening is Day 1, Friday evening to Saturday evening is Day 2, and Saturday evening to Sunday evening is Day 3. Further, the word Paschal comes from the word Pasch which means Passover. It is the Jewish remembrance and celebration of the day when God brought the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt. God plagued Egypt forcing the Egyptians to free them. The last plague was the angel of death. The Jews were instructed to slaughter a spotless lamb and mark their homes with the blood of the lamb. In turn, the angel of death “passed over” their homes. This Old Testa- ment event is the pre-figurement of the salvific work of Jesus, the Paschal Lamb of God. Finally, another unique element about the Paschal Triduum is that although three days, they form one single saving moment. One can properly understand the Last Supper event when it is seen in the lens of the Crucifixion event, and one can truly rejoice on Easter when the meaning and purpose of the death of Jesus is fully understood. Thus, our three liturgies from one single celebration. At the end of the Mass on Holy Thursday, you will notice that there is no final blessing or dismissal. It is because the liturgy does not end; it simply pauses. It is the same with the Good Friday liturgy. It is only at the end of the Easter Vigil Mass when we shall hear the formal dismissal with the double alleluia. PARISH MISSION STATEMENT

We, the people of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Faith Community, Baptized into Jesus Christ, formed by Word and Sacrament, and Empowered by the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Seek to be a visible sign of God’s love. We seek to build the Kingdom of God by: Using our unique gifts to minister to one another, Welcoming all and caring for those in need, Teaching our faith to others and Uniting in worship as a family with the Body of Christ.

Dear St. Paul Family and Friends,

Palm Sunday begins Holy Week. Jesus makes his final entrance into Jerusalem, celebrates supper with his disciples, dies on the Cross, and rises again from the dead. As we progress from today, the solemnity of the week heightens leading up to the Paschal Triduum (sometimes called Easter Triduum).

The word triduum means three days. It begins from the evening of Holy Thursday evening and culminates in the evening of Easter Sunday. The liturgical services that take place during these days are Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper, Good Friday of the Lord’s Passion and Mass of the Resurrection of the Lord.

This Old Testa-ment event is the pre-figurement of the salvific work of Jesus, the Paschal Lamb of God.

Our Conference of Bishops succinctly puts it, “Though chronologically three days, they are liturgically one day unfolding for us the unity of Christ’s Paschal Mystery.”

Have a blessed and meaningful holy week, St. Paul fam. I shall keep you all in my prayers.

The Easter Vigil The Easter Vigil is the Mass celebrating the Resurrection of the Lord. We begin outdoors with the blessing of the Easter fire and lighting of the Paschal candle representing the light of the Risen Christ. We then continue into the darkened church where the light of Christ begins to overcome the darkness and the Exultet is sung.

There are seven Old Testament Scripture readings chosen for this unique vigil, each with its own unique response. These scriptures trace salvation history prior to the Incarnation of Christ in the world. All seven Old Testament readings are to be included at the Easter Vigil (although, for serious and/or significant reasons, the readings may be reduced down to a minimum of three from the Old Testament).

Following the Old Testament readings, there is a reading (Epistle), from the New Testament, the return of the Gloria being sung at the Mass, and the proclamation of the Gospel.

After the homily, the Elect whom we have been praying for intently during the Lenten season, enter into the life of Christ and his Church through the waters of Baptism. They are then confirmed and finally join us around the table of the Lord for Eucharist.

For us, as Latin-rite (Roman) Catholics, this is the holiest day of the year and the high-point of our liturgical calendar. Please be aware that this is not celebrated like any other regular Saturday evening Mass. Due to the solemn nature of the Easter Vigil (celebrated on the night of Holy Saturday), the duration of this mass is anticipated to be 1 ½ to 2 hours in length. Please plan accordingly so that you are prepared to spend this amount of time with the faith community and those who we will become as our brothers and sisters through the waters of Baptism.

The Feast of the Divine Mercy

Our Lord asked Sister Faustina to pray and work towards establishing a Feast of the Divine Mercy on the Sunday after Easter. He told her:

“On that day, the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon souls who approach the fount

of My mercy. The soul that will go to Confession (8 days before or after) and receive Holy Communion, shall obtain

complete forgiveness of sins punishment.” (Diary 699)

It is a day that would celebrate the paschal mystery with a focus on God’s covenant of mercy. It would be a day of Atonement in the Old Testament (see Lv 16) - all our sins and the punishment due to them would be atoned for. We can already celebrate this “Mercy Sunday” by going to Confession (8 days before or after) and Communion on that day. We can honor the mercy of the Lord by our prayers and works of mercy.

T he END and THE BEGINNING —To mark the beginning of our

faith at Jesus’ glorious Resurrection! The precursor to this event is the

TRIDUUM—the three days that come at the end of Lent; the days that mark the Paschal Mystery of Redemption. DAY ONE: HOLY THURSDAY—The Last Supper held in the upper room with Jesus washing the feet of his disciples and instituting the 1st Eucharist celebration. His visit to the garden of Gethsemane and his betrayal by Judas. DAY TWO: GOOD FRIDAY—The death of Jesus on the cross and utter silence of the tomb. DAY THREE: HOLY SATURDAY—All the disciples are convinced that their hopes of a Messiah have been destroyed; they go into hiding forgetting momentarily that God has a plan for the morning!

T he readings for Palm or Passion Sunday are the most

dramatic of the whole year.

They recount the entire story of Christ’s death from Holy Thursday through Good Friday. One of the unusual aspects of this week’s Gospel reading is that it is the one time during the year when all of us take part in proclaiming the Word of God by participating in the Gospel reading.

In Christ’s Passion, there were saints and sinners, enemies and friends. And we can find ourselves in any one of these categories. This Gospel reading challenges us to consider areas of our lives in which we deny Christ. We might not see ourselves denying Jesus three times in front of a crowd as Peter did, but do we deny him in small ways through the little sins we commit each day? And while there was only one Judas who sold our Lord for thirty pieces of silver, we might find ourselves in Judas’ company when we reject Christ completely and turn our backs on him in mortal sin.

On the other hand, the Gospel reading also holds up beautiful models of love and fidelity: Mary Magdalene, John, our Blessed Mother, and the women who go to the tomb where Jesus is buried show us the most noble characteristics of a follower of Christ.

Which characters from the Passion narrative do you identify with the most?

D ISCUSSION: Please watch this week's Opening the Word

video at sptacc.formed.org

The presenter, Father John Riley, discussed how we find different roles in today’s Gospel reading of the Passion story, some good and some bad. He mentioned characters who proved to be unfaithful during Christ’s passion and others who serve as models we are called to emulate. In the video, • What characters and roles were

described as part of the Passion story?

• What additional roles did other characters play in the Passion narrative?

Father Riley noted how the Mass makes the events of Passion Week spiritually present to us. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches, the Mass is the “making present and the sacramental

offering of [Christ’s] unique sacrifice” (CCC 1362). We are called to play an active role in this memorial of the Passion. • What role(s) do you think you have

played in the past? • What character do you identify

with the most at this point in your life? Why?

P RAYER: In this study you have discussed the various

roles in the Passion narrative, and you have considered with which character you can relate the most. Now in prayer, enter into the Passion narrative in your chosen role—the character from the Passion with whom you identify the most. Reread the parts of the Passion narrative in which your character appears and imagine being that person. How do you feel playing this part? How do you react to the events taking place? What do you say as the events unfold? Now imagine that Jesus sees you. What do you think he would say to you? What would you say to him?

R ESOLUTION: Imagine that you are at the foot of the cross,

gazing up at our crucified Lord. What are one or two practical things you can do this week to keep in mind the Passion events and remain a faithful follower of our Lord in the face of your daily challenges?

FAITHFULNESS under Pressure
